Prem’s funeral His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, together with Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati attended a merit-making ceremony on Monday, June 3, for the funeral of Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda.

After arriving at Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram temple in Dusit district, Bangkok, His Majesty the King laid a royal wreath and a wreath bestowed by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother. Her Majesty the Queen also placed a wreath to pay homage to the late Statesman. His Majesty the King then lit candles and incense sticks, and 10 Buddhist monks recited prayers.

After the praying session, His Majesty the King performed robe-offering and libation ceremonies and the Buddhist monks recited prayers of blessing. The curtain goes up June 14-15 on the Pattaya Music Festival.

Music will flow from stages in North Pattaya Beach near Soi 4, Central Pattaya Beach at the Beach Road and Central Road intersection, and

3 men sentenced to death for killing British man and wife Phrae (AP) — Three men in northern Thailand were found guilty last week of murdering a British expat and his Thai wife and sentenced to death.

The bodies of retired petroleum engineer Alan Hogg, 64, and his wife Nhot Suddaen, 61, were found buried on their property in Phrae province last September.

The Phrae Provincial Court found Nhot’s older brother, Warut Rattanasajjakit, guilty of masterminding the couple’s murders and hiring two other men to help him carry out the attack. All three were found guilty of premeditated murder, concealing bodies, illegal possession of weapons without licenses and bringing those weapons into the city without licenses.

order to take control of Hogg’s assets and sell some of them.

According to the court’s ruling, Warut initially asked his neighbor, Suma Utpamoon, to assist him in the murders but Suma refused after learning that Warut sought to kill his own sister. However, Suma was still paid by Warut for

recommending the two men to do the job and was charged by the court with assisting premeditated murder.

Suma received a 25-year prison sentence, which was halved from a 50-year penalty because he cooperated with the investigation.

The court found that the two hired men shot Hogg

with a shotgun, while Warut bludgeoned his sister to death using a car wrench. It said the killers then used a backhoe to dig a hole outside the couple’s home to bury their bodies.

The bodies were discovered once the couple were reported missing and a police investigation began.

The court called the murders “an act that extremely damages the country’s reputation as unable to ensure the safety of lives and assets.” It said the three were considered “extremely dangerous to society.”

Pawina Chuayen, a lawyer for the family of the victims, said their foreign relatives were satisfied with the court’s ruling but were also deeply affected by the events and not ready to speak about the case.

The ministry hosts its Social Expo yearly to exchange and

showcase academic works to mitigate economic inequality and improve the quality of life for the disadvantaged.

This year’s expo has a focus on corporate responsibility

and projects companies can undertake to achieve the ministry’s goals.

Thailand not on US watch list on currency manipulation Bank of Thailand (BOT) Governor Wirathai Santipraphop said the United States Treasury has recently published a watch list of nine trading partner countries suspected of currency manipulation and Thailand is not one of them.

Wirathai said the government and the BOT have not intervened in the baht currency for a trade advantage with the United States in any way, however, it is necessary to maintain the exchange rate and closely follow up on the

issue as the United States has adjusted the rules in considering the listing of countries.

Nations on the list are accused of distorting currencies in many criteria as competition in the world trade arena has become more intense.

Nowhere to sit Dear Editor, I have no complaints about the standard of work on the new pavement on Jomtien Beach Road, but I am complaining about there being nowhere to sit

down and admire the sea view. There used to be marble benches but they’ve been removed and not replaced with anything.

Having nowhere to sit and take a breather will deter a

lot of older visitors like myself. Perhaps Pattaya City Hall could offer an explanation for this important oversight.

Now however, thick white lines have been put on the railway road at all the junctions. This to western people means STOP and give way. However as there are no signs to enforce this,

the traffic on the railway road persists in just blindly racing through the junctions, creating a very dangerous situation. This is a serious accident just waiting to happen. Clarification is needed please.

Government gives thumbs-up Gen. Surayud, PM Prayut to Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ attend funeral ceremony

Bangkok (AP) — The late British writer and social critic George Orwell appears to be back in the good graces of Thailand’s rulers after a spell in the doghouse five years ago.

Deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak, summing up prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha’s political thoughts as the country prepares to install a new elected government, said his boss recommended reading the Thai edition of “Animal Farm,” ‘’which is a book that leaves important lessons on how to live life.”

Prayuth’s plug for “Animal Farm” reflected a more positive view of Orwell’s work than the military had right after seizing power in the May 2014 coup. Fire strikes Bangkok’s popular Chatuchak weekend market Customs implements technology Bangkok (AP) — Thai authorities on Monday were investigating an after-hours fire that roared through Bangkok’s Chatuchak weekend market, destroying scores of small shops crammed inside one of Asia’s most popular bazaars.

The Thai capital’s fire emergency service said the blaze started after 9 p.m. Sunday and affected more than 100 stalls spread across about 1,000 square meters (10,764 square feet). No injuries were reported.

The sprawling and densely packed Chatuchak market sells a wide variety of goods in its thousands of stalls, from clothing and handicrafts to paintings and live animals. It is popular with locals and tourists alike.

“The fire was just too big.

People were evacuating their shops,” said eyewitness Younes Parvin, a university student who shot cellphone video of the blaze from about 20 meters away. “It was quite terrifying.”

Parvin said it took firefighters 10 minutes to arrive, and that eventually dozens of emergency vehicles were on the scene.

Most shops had closed by the time the fire started and vendors were heading home, he added.

“If it was daytime ... it would have been a lot worse,” he said.

The packed market, which is covered in most parts, is crisscrossed by narrow and often crowded passageways that can be dizzyingly disorienting for first-time visitors.

Aswin Kwanmuang, Bangkok’s governor, said some 110 vendors were affected by the blaze and vowed to provide compensation to those affected. He speculated that an electrical short circuit could be to blame given that the electrical system in the market is about three decades old. Rebuilding of the affected portion of the market was expected to take two months.

Video posted by social media users showed intense flames raging from the singlestory market as onlookers watched nearby.

Customs Department Director General Krisada Chinavicharana revealed this week that his department has collected 354.124 billion baht in revenue from 1st October 2018 to 21st May 2019, an amount 6.1 percent higher than over the same period the previous year.

The total is comprised of 60 billion baht tax collected by the department itself or 18 percent of total revenue, and some 280 billion baht collected by other agencies.

The department was able to collect more tax on the sale of sedan cars and vans, as well as on agricultural produce. The department however collected less tax than anticipated on guns, automobile chassis, and soybean products.

Customs Department’s Principal Advisor on Customs Control Development, Chaiyut Kumkun said the department is working in compliance with the World Customs Organization’s guidelines and has implemented an advance customs clearance system for imported items to help shorten the procedure. It is developing a system to facilitate international e-commerce businesses by providing access to the e-payment system for tax payments, and developing the value added tax (VAT) refund system for exporters, which would imitate the blockchain system to allow companies to receive their refunds sooner.

Amazon’s Bezos says he’ll send a spaceship to the moon Seth Borenstein Washington (AP) — Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos says he’s going to send a spaceship to the moon, joining a resurgence of lunar interest half a century after people first set foot there.

Bezos said his space company Blue Origin will land a robotic ship the size of a small house, capable of carrying four rovers and using a newly designed rocket engine and souped-up rockets. It would be followed by a version that could bring people to the moon along the same timeframe as NASA’s proposed 2024 return.

Bezos, who was dwarfed by his mock-up of the Blue Moon vehicle at his May 9 presentation, said, “This is an incredible vehicle and it’s going to the moon.”

He added: “It’s time to go back to the moon. This time to stay.”

The announcement for the usually secretive space company came with all the glitz of an Apple product launch in a darkened convention ballroom bedazzled with shimmering stars on its walls.

Astronauts and other space luminaries sat in the audience under blue-tinted lighting before Bezos unveiled the boxy ship with four long and spindly landing legs.

Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, walked off the stage without providing details, including launch dates, customers and the plan for humans on his rockets. He spent more time talking about his dream of future generations living on orbiting space station colonies than on concrete details about Blue Origin missions.

Blue Origin officials gave conflicting answers to questions about when the company would land on the moon with and without people. Blue Origin Vice President Clay Mowry said 2024 was not a concrete goal for a mission with people and said it was more up to NASA as a potential customer.

Walker, a private space consultant who is working with Blue Origin, said it plans for a 2023 launch without people.

Blue Origin in 2017 revealed plans to send an unmanned, reusable rocket, capable of carrying 10,000 pounds (4,500 kilograms) of payload, to the moon. The company had a successful launch earlier this month, reusing one of its New Shepard rockets, which barely goes to the edge of space, for a fifth time.

The new moon race has a lower profile than the one in the 1960s. It involves private companies, new countries and a NASA return mission to place astronauts back on the lunar surface by 2024.

While a $30 million prize for private companies to send

robotic probes to the moon went unclaimed last year, one of the competitors, from an Israeli private nonprofit, crashed last month as it tried to land.

China has landed a rover on the moon’s far side.

SpaceX last year announced plans to send a Japanese businessman around the moon in 2023. And the Israeli nonprofit said it will give it a second shot.

The first successful moon landing was by the Soviet Union in 1966 with Luna 9, followed by the U.S. four months later. NASA put the first — and only — people on the moon in the Apollo program, starting with Apollo 11 in July 1969.

“The next leap in space will be fueled by commercial companies like Blue Origin and commercial innovation,” said former Obama White House space adviser Phil Larson, now an assistant dean of engineering at the University of Colorado.

Space companies have in the past made big announcements with goals that never came true.

Former NASA deputy administrator Dava Newman, an MIT professor working as a customer of Blue Origin, said this time it’s different. The new engine is the reason, she said, “It’s for real.”

SpaceX launches 60 little satellites, with many more to come Marcia Dunn Cape Canaveral, Fla. (AP) — SpaceX has launched 60 little satellites, the first of thousands that founder Elon Musk plans to put in orbit for global internet coverage.

The recycled Falcon rocket blasted off late Thursday night, May 23. The firststage booster landed on an ocean platform following liftoff, as the tightly packed cluster of satellites continued upward.

Musk said all 60 flat-panel satellites were deployed and online a few hundred miles above Earth. Each weighs 500 pounds and has a single solar panel and a kryptonpowered thruster for raising and maintaining altitude.

The satellites have the capability of automatically dodging sizable pieces of space junk.

The orbiting constellation — named Starlink — will grow in the next few years, Musk said.

Twelve launches of 60 satellites each will provide reliable and affordable internet coverage throughout the U.S., he said. Twenty-four launches will serve most of the populated world and 30 launches the entire world. That will be 1,800 satellites in total, with more planned after that.

Musk told reporters last week there’s “a fundamental goodness” to giving people in all corners of the globe choices in broadband internet service. He’s especially interested in reaching areas without coverage or where it is expensive or unreliable.

Other companies have similar plans, including Project Kuiper from Jeff Bezos’ Amazon and OneWeb. According to Musk, California-based SpaceX can use Starlink revenue to develop more advanced rockets and spacecraft to achieve his ultimate goal of establishing a city on Mars.

Musk, who also runs the electric carmaker Tesla and other ventures, said Starlink is one of the hardest engineering projects he’s encountered.

The satellites include a lot of new technology, and he warned last week that some of them might not work.

The Starlink satellites are designed to re-enter the atmosphere after four or five years in orbit, burning up harmlessly over the Pacific. Musk stressed there will be no safety issues on the ground from falling chunks of debris.

The launch was delayed twice last week, first by high wind and then for software updates. It was the third flight for this booster.

NASA: Budget boost ‘good start’ to put astronauts on moon Marcia Dunn Cape Canaveral, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s chief said that the Trump administration’s proposed $1.6 billion budget boost is a “good start” for getting astronauts back on

the moon within five years.

Administrator Jim Bridenstine addressed employees a day after the White House introduced the budget amendment.

During an hourlong town hall from NASA headquarters in Washington, Bridenstine

said $1.6 billion is enough for 2020. But more money will be needed in the years ahead to land “the next man and the first woman” at the south pole of the moon by 2024.

NASA is once again turning to Greek mythology for the name of the project. It’s being called Artemis, after the twin sister of Apollo. Apollo was the name of NASA’s moonshot program that, 50 years ago this summer, achieved the first manned lunar landing.

NASA landed 12 men on the moon over six Apollo missions. For the next goaround, the space agency wants its moonwalkers to reflect today’s more diverse astronaut corps, thus the name of Apollo’s sister.

Artemis was goddess of the hunt as well as the moon.

“I have a daughter, she’s 11 years old, and I want her to see herself in the same position that our current, very diverse astronaut corps currently sees itself, having the opportunity to go to the moon,” Bridenstine said. “In the 1960s, young ladies didn’t have the opportunity to see themselves in that role. Today, they do.”

extra money, if approved by Congress, will come from outside NASA, rather than being taken from the International Space Station or other departments within the space agency.

The administration seeks to use money from Pell Grants for college education, for NASA’s new spending.

Bridenstine said he’s already

heard criticism of how the new spending will be “dead on arrival” in Congress because neither NASA nor the administration worked in advance with Congress on it.

As a former congressman from Oklahoma, he said he knows how the process works and assured the space agency’s 17,000 employees that would not be the case.

“This is a good out-of-thegate first start, a very honest proposal from the administration that keeps us all together, moving forward,” he said.

He also plugged NASA’s ongoing Space Launch System mega-rocket and Orion spacecraft, both under development, and a proposed outpost in the vicinity of the moon, called Gateway.

A few hours later, Bridenstine found himself before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, talking up the Artemis moon plan. The space agency envisions that the effort will involve private industry as well as other countries. Just last week, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos introduced a mock-up of his own planned lunar lander for his Blue Origin space company.

In March, Vice President Mike Pence urged NASA to accelerate its moon-landing program, moving it up from 2028 to 2024.

NASA has flip-flopped between the moon and Mars, a victim of changing presidential administrations. More recently, President Barack Obama targeted Mars as astronauts’ next big destination, while President Donald Trump has favored the moon.

EBM and you?

The practice of Medicine is a fascinating story over thousands of years. “Healers” have been part of most societies, and in ancient China, for example, you paid the doctor to remain well, not for treatment of your ailment.

Now there’s an incentive bonus for you!

Then there are different kinds of “medicine” given such names as “conventional”, “alternative” and “complementary”.

These different ways at looking at the same subject (making you well) can be quite confusing, and for me much hangs on the term EBM, which stands for Evidence Based Medicine.

Mind you, it has also always been the case where people like to throw stones at conventional clinical medicine.

Claims of over-servicing, over-prescribing and downright fraudulent practices are thrown about, citing someone whose uncle/friend/mother (delete that which is inappropriate) suffered at the hands of “bad” doctors who misdiagnosed the illness and the patient died.

Now, there are certainly some “bad” doctors out there, just as there are “bad” lawyers, “bad” Real Estate agents, “bad” mechanics and just about any profession you would like to think of. But they’re not all “bad”.

And me? I am a conventionally trained British/Australian style medical practitioner who has spent a lifetime practicing EBM. Practices that have been proven to work.

Call it “good” medicine, if you like.

I am also proud of my final exams taken in the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in London. I have the honor to have my name listed in the ‘great book’ with luminaries such as Hunter, Jenner and Lister. I am also indebted to my tutors during the 12 months of ‘pre-registration’, where you apply your knowledge under the supervision of accredited specialists. An arduous road, but one that is a safeguard for you, the general public.

The ‘powers that be’ are also ensuring that we keep up to date with a process called Continuous Medical Education (CME). That medical education continues through to today, with CME lectures being attended by my hospital’s doctors, and myself. Fortunately for me, the slides are in English.

Those ‘powers that be’ also try to ensure that we prescribe drugs that are efficacious, that have been tested, and the evidence points to this. It is not anecdotal evidence, but true scientific evidence shown by research in many countries, with hundreds of thousands of patients. It is following that type of evidence that I can recommend with all good faith that 100 mg of aspirin a day is “good” medicine. I also know that if you are prescribed a ‘statin’ drug it will lower your cholesterol levels. They have been tested.

I am also the first to admit that we have sometimes managed to get it wrong. The Thalidomide story still has living examples of this. However, the medical world-wide network is cohesive enough to ensure that this drug was withdrawn.

It is the checks and balances system that has kept conventional medicine afloat.

I am often asked my opinion on “alternative” medicine, and I try to avoid direct confrontation over this. If devotees have found that they can diagnose tumors by looking at patient’s auras through their third eye in the middle of their foreheads, then I am genuinely pleased, in fact delighted, provided that they have subjected the method to scientific scrutiny.

If various groups can actually cure cancer, epilepsy, halitosis or lock-jaw by inserting dandelions into a fundamental orifice, then again I am delighted. This is a medical break-through, but as such, must be subjected to medical scrutiny. If the method stands true scientific examination (not to be confused with anecdotal ‘evidence’) then it will be adopted by everyone, complete with thanks to those clever people who picked the dandelions in the first place. Ignore the claims that “Big Pharma” is suppressing cancer treatments. If someone has the answer, they will be multi-millionaires overnight.

As far as the majority of ‘folk’ remedies is concerned, I work on the principle that if you ‘think’ it is doing you good, then it probably is. But don’t ask me to endorse something that has not been scientifically tested.

When the ‘alternative’ group spends more time proving their methods, instead of complaining about non-acceptance, EBM practitioners will give them more credence.

‘Zombie cells’ buildup in your body may play role in aging Malcolm Ritter New York (AP) — Call them zombie cells — they refuse to die.

As they build up in your body, studies suggest, they promote aging and the conditions that come with it like osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers are studying drugs that can kill zombie cells and possibly treat the problems they bring.

Basically the goal is to fight aging itself, which hopefully will in turn delay the appearance of age-related disease and disabilities as a group, says geriatrics specialist Dr. James Kirkland of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. That’s in contrast to playing a “whack-a-mole game” of treating one disease only to see another spring up, he said.

The research has been done chiefly in mice. Earlier this year, the first test in people was published and provided some tantalizing results.

Zombie cells are actually called senescent cells. They start out normal but then encounter a stress, like damage to their DNA or viral infection. At that point, a cell can choose to die or become

a zombie, basically entering a state of suspended animation.

The problem is that zombie cells release chemicals that can harm nearby normal cells.

That’s where the trouble starts.

What kind of trouble? In mouse studies, drugs that eliminate zombie cells — socalled senolytics — have been shown to improve an impressive list of conditions, such as cataracts, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, enlargement of the heart, kidney problems, clogged arteries and age-related loss of muscle.

Mouse studies have also shown a more direct tie between zombie cells and aging. When drugs targeting those cells were given to

aged mice, the animals showed better walking speed, grip strength and endurance on a treadmill. Even when the treatment was applied to very old mice, the equivalent of people ages 75 to 90, it extended lifespan by an average of 36 percent.

Researchers have also shown that transplanting zombie cells into young mice basically made them act older: their maximum walking speed slowed down, and their muscle strength and endurance decreased.

Tests showed the implanted cells converted other cells to zombie status.

Kirkland and colleagues this year published the first study of a zombie-cell treatment in people. It involved

14 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a generally fatal disease that scars the lining of the lungs. Risk rises with age, and the lungs of patients show evidence of zombie cells.

In the preliminary experiment, after three weeks of treatment, patients improved on some measures of physical fitness, like walking speed. Other measures did not show improvement.

Overall, the results are encouraging and “it really raises enthusiasm to proceed with the more rigorous studies,” said Dr. Gregory Cosgrove, chief medical officer of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, who played no role in the study.

The field of zombie cells is still young. But Kirkland estimates at least a dozen companies have formed or have launched efforts to pursue treatments. He holds shares in one.

Apart from age-related diseases, anti-zombie drugs might be useful for treating premature aging among cancer survivors that brings on the early appearance of some diseases, said Laura Niedernhofer of the University of Minnesota.

They will be granted a certificate after the training and will then be able to prescribe medical marijuana to patients.

In the future, the plan is to provide online training for medical personnel.

Somsak disclosed that the extracts from marijuana have medical benefits if used in appropriate proportions but he said medical research has found that the extracts can only be used to treat four diseases effectively, these being cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis with muscle contractions and neuropathic pain that fails to respond to

any other method of treatment. However, marijuana extracts can lead to adverse effects so they must be used under a doctor’s directions.

been approved for other uses or are even sold as supplements. But Niedernhofer and Kirkland stress that people should not try them on their own, nor should doctors prescribe them, for the uses now under study because more research has to be done first.

Niedernhofer said the best drugs may be yet to come.

The goal is not to prevent stressed cells from turning into zombies, she said, because they may become cancerous instead. The aim is to trigger death of cells that have already transformed, or to limit the harm they do.

And what about giving them to healthy people who want to ward off aging?

That’s possible but a long way off, after studies have established that the drugs

are safe enough, she said.

“We may not get there,” Kirkland said.

In any case, experts are impressed by the research so far.

“I think this is very exciting,” said Dr. George Kuchel of the University of Connecticut Center on Aging in Farmington. The results from animal studies are “very spectacular. It’s very compelling data.”

Nir Barzilai, a researcher of aging at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, said he believes targeting zombie cells will play a role in the overall effort to delay, stop and maybe reverse aging.

So much research suggests they promote aging that “we know that it should be true,” he said.

Total charge 400 baht for a local brand. “What the heck is going on?” he yelled. “The motor bike taxi man expected a rather large tip,” replied the grim-looking security doorman.

Elite Visa A reader asks why anyone would pay a one-off 500,000 baht for a five year visa. Lots better-off foreigners, especially from China and Southeast Asia buy them. You avoid having to keep cash in the bank, are exempt from the frequent changes in visa regulations, can forget about medical insurance (for five years anyway) and can enjoy all the perks listed on the website.

For most nationalities, the answer is two entries per calendar year by a land border. No specific rule about entry through the airport, but the immigration officer can query whether you are trying to live in Thailand long-term without a proper visa. But each local authority has its own specifications to go yellow, some a lot more detailed than others. You’ve guessed it - the list given out at Pattaya city hall is not the shortest.

Do you want to upsize this?

Size matters! Never mind what you previously read about this in women’s magazines – but size does matter - in photography. Even more than the upsize does at the take-away.

Photography is all about producing an image, and has been for the past 150 years plus. However, after getting a handle on the technology, photographers began to see that the image was the most important item, not how you got it.

After the world’s snap shooters took all these facts on board, the composition of the imagery was next to be considered, and the famous name photographers of the last century were the ones who understood composition. But not only composition, but also ‘size’.

Horizontal format.

Go to an art gallery and look at the size of the paintings. Large and larger, all to give the painting more impact. But I suppose, you would be flat out getting the Battle of Waterloo into a 10x8 inch canvas.

However, you don’t need an art gallery to exhibit your photography. One wall in your lounge room will be more than enough, and here’s how you do it.

Long story short, I ended up having a few drinks with a young lady and invited her to stay the night with me, but as we came up from the disco we were set upon by the night staff who demanded I pay 1,000 baht for her to stay with me and also she had to leave her ID card with them. I have always believed that when you order a double-bed room, the second person was covered in the price. Is this not the current way in Thailand? I also believe it is not a good idea to leave your personal details with anyone, such as the Thai ID card, such as was demanded of my girlfriend. Is this normal, or was I just being ripped off? I did pay and she did leave her ID. James Dear James, You were being charged a “joiner” fee, which is pretty standard in most up-market hotels. When you take someone in for the night, more hotel facilities are used (towels, soaps, etc.), so I suppose they can justify the fee. I have no idea whether that is the standard fee, but in general, the more expensive the room, the higher the fee. As far as the ID card is concerned, my Petal, be thankful that the hotel does this. What would you have done if your disco companion which you say was your “girlfriend”, whom you had known for a whole two hours, decamped in the middle of the night with all your valuables. And all you know is that her name was Lek. At least with the ID recorded the police do have a chance of finding your Lek from the 10,000 other Leks in Bangkok.

Tourist number projection remains at 40 million

The CEBF is still positive the total number of visitors to Thailand this year will reach 40 million.

The University of the Thai Chambers of Commerce’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting (CEBF) is still positive the total number of visitors to Thailand this year will reach 40 million. The optimism stems from campaigns promoting tourism in local cities and the extension of a visa on arrival fee waiver.

Thanawat Polvichai, Director of the CEBF, said he has encouraged the government to implement more tourism

Suite dreams

Yesterday afternoon, as a reward for mopping the kitchen floor, I listened with one of the dogs to a CD recorded by the incomparable and famously eccentric Canadian pianist Glenn Gould.

He was playing Bach’s refreshingly joyous English Suite No 2 recorded in the 1970s. The music sounded as sparkling as ever and the dog thought so too.

It occurred to me that the suite must be one of the oldest musical forms. It can be created by merely stringing

a few separate pieces together. Centuries ago, someone may have decided to play a few pieces as a group, thus making a more substantial musical offering. We know that during the 15th century, dances were often paired together to create contrasting longer pieces.

In the 17th century, composers often wrote a group of three or four pieces for keyboard or lute, intended to be played one after another.

They were usually based on the popular European court

dances of the time, such as the allemande, the courante, the sarabande and the gigue.

There was no limit to the number of movements in a suite. In France, some lute and keyboard suites were published that contained as many as seventeen or eighteen separate pieces but by the end of the Baroque four of five movements had become pretty much the standard.

In these instrumental suites, the court dances were transformed into elegant and sophisticated compositions, far removed in style and spirit from the superficial gaiety of the ballroom. The dances of the suite were nearly always in the same key, which added a sense of unity and they were intended purely for listening rather than for dancing. During the Baroque, the suite was one of the most important musical forms and its greatest exponent was undoubtedly Johann Sebastian Bach. His six suites for unaccompanied cello are still essential study for aspiring cellists and his English and French suites for keyboard remain part of the standard repertoire.

Strangely enough, we don’t know for certain why they are called “English”. On the surface they sound similar in style to the French Suites, written some years later. A copy of the first suite made

by Bach’s youngest son Johann Christian Bach, bears the curious hand-written annotation “fait pour les Anglais”. The 19th century musicologist Johann Forkel suggested that the suites might have been composed for an English aristocrat but no evidence has yet emerged to substantiate the claim. Bach himself never referred to “English” suites so it remains something of a mystery. Nevertheless, the works demonstrate Bach’s remarkable skills at melodywriting and counterpoint the lost art of skillfully combining different complex melodies.

In typical fashion, Suite No 2 begins with a prelude, a rippling movement full of brilliant writing. It’s followed by six dances: a measured and lyrical allemande, a sparkling courante, a dreamy sarabande, two sprightly bourrées one of which contains a ceremonial Handellike passage which you might recognise.

The suite concludes with a lively and virtuosic gigue which had its origins in the British jig.

By the middle of the 18th century, dance suites had faded out of favour and in any case, some of the dances must have seemed distinctly old-fashioned.

The dance suite as a musical form didn’t emerge again until the late 19th century.

Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra cond. Paavo Järvi (Duration: 18:52; Video: 720p HD) Grieg composed his Norwegian Dances around 1880-81. They were originally written for piano duet to satisfy the current

demand for music to be played at home. This is charming, delightful and light-hearted music and the artistic opposite of the sublime Bach suite. Grieg used melodies from a published collection of genuine Norwegian folk music and being a reluctant orchestrator, hoped that the French composer Eduard Lalo would offer to do the arrangements for him.

As things turned out, the task fell to the Czech-born violinist, conductor and prolific composer Hans Sitt who orchestrated the music in 1888 thus bringing it into the concert hall and to the attention of the general public.

Hans Sitt did a superb job in converting Grieg’s piano duets into an orchestral suite, creating brilliant scores with inspired, colourful orchestration. Even if you’ve not come across this work before, the insouciant melody of the second movement might seem strangely familiar. This entertaining work is superbly directed by the distinguished Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi. At times, he bears an unsettling resemblance to Vladimir Putin.

Danger, beauty, suspense in ‘The River’s’ wilderness Julia Rubin Peter Heller’s novel “The River”, about two Dartmouth College students on a canoe trip gone badly awry, is partly an ode to the Northern wilderness, partly a survival howto, and mostly a thriller — suspenseful and gut-wrenching.

Best friends Wynn and Jack take a late-summer trip to Canada, paddling down a river that winds through lakes and over rapids on its way to Hudson Bay. Like the river, Heller’s plot often takes its time, digressing to describe how the boys fillet a fish or make camp, or what the Northern Lights look like. But don’t get lulled: There’s action around the bend.

The two friends, both country boys, are experts in the woods and on the water, where they are self-proclaimed “minimalists” — no phones, no frills. They also share “a literary way of looking at the world,” and frequently see it through the lenses of Edgar Allan Poe, Virgil, James Dickey and more.

Their leisurely trip turns into a harrowing dash toward safety when both nature and other people turn violent.

Nature dishes up a massive forest fire that bears down on them. The boys smell and hear the blaze long before they

see it — the fleeing animals, the drifting smoke, the popping and hissing of trees.

Meanwhile, human mysteries lurk: Wynn and Jack hear a man and woman arguing on the bank as their canoe glides by in the fog; when they return to warn the couple about the fire, they find nobody there. Later, a man turns up at their camp downriver, alone. Where is the woman?

Heller, author of previous novels including “The Dog Stars” and “Celine,” dives deep into the details of wilderness camping — so deep that sometimes you just want to jump ahead and find out what happens. Likewise with his acute and poetic observations of nature. But he is setting the scene and establishing two likable and memorable characters in Wynn and Jack. Each brings a different perspective to the violence and tragedy they encounter.

River travel has often been a metaphor for writers. At one point early on, as the boys approach some rapids, Heller writes that “every river story they had ever read was just beneath the surface of their imaginations and must have fired them with extra energy and braced them, too, because at least half of those stories did not have happy endings.” (AP)

Tangerine Dream: ‘Phaedra’ mott@pattayamail.com German band Tangerine Dream were formed in 1967

by Edgar Froese, and little did the world know at the time what a musical pioneer this man would become.

Electronica, New Age and many other names have been given to Tangerine Dream’s music as it is very hard to pigeon-hole and give it a label.

The band have released over one hundred official studio and live albums, over sixty movie soundtracks (including

for such smash hit movies as “Firestarter” and “Risky Business”), plus background music to many TV series and video games. Edgar Froese as a solo artist has released over twenty five albums on his own.

The amazing thing is the band had an extremely heavy touring schedule as well. If you add on officially approved bootleg albums from the Tangerine Tree series (of which at present there are over eighty-five) and a collaboration with Brian May of Queen, you are looking at over two hundred album releases - quite a collection for somebody to have!

Although Edgar Froese was the only continuous

member of the band until his sudden and tragic death in 2015, the classic line up of Tangerine Dream has always been Froese, Christopher Franke and Peter Baumann, who all performed together in the mid 1970’s.

in 1974. The album reached number fifteen in the British charts where it stayed for fifteen weeks, with sales going into six figures. It was quite incredible for that era to have such a hit album with no radio play to back it up (sales were by word of mouth only).

While the sales were miraculous in the United Kingdom, in the band’s homeland of Germany they barely reached six thousand.

The music took it’s listener into uncharted territory and the opening song was based on the improvisation that Branson had heard before.

who’d rather just destroy them all.

As far as the newcomers go, Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) also works for Monarch and has developed a machine called the Orca, which simulates the sounds of the various titans.

She believes this can be used to help manage them.

Emma lives with her 14year-old daughter, Madison (“Stranger Things’” Millie Bobby Brown in her first major film role), who is precociously enchanted by her mother’s work and admires the primordial creatures.

Madison’s father Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler, whose intensity is at level 10 for most of the movie) is not really in the picture, having left after the San Francisco incident, but is drawn back in when Emma and Madison (and the Orca) are kidnapped by some militant eco-terrorists led by Jonah Alan (Charles Dance).

The title track took up the whole of the first side in the days of vinyl and opening side two was “Mysterious Semblance At The Strand of Nightmares”, very much a ballad compared to what had gone before it on side one (albeit a very eerie ballad).

Following next was “Movements of a Visionary” which starts off with bursts of colored noise and sparkling showers of VCS3 sounds, soon joined by synthesized pulses that build throughout the music until finally letting go at the end. The finale comes in the shape of “Sequence ‘c’”, a solo synthesizer piece.

Over forty years later this music is still quiet mysterious but mightily compelling.

Even after Edgar Froese’s death, Tangerine Dream still carry on producing albums and playing live concerts as a successor had already been chosen in the form of Thorsten Quaeschning. Edgar Froese’s musical legacy may well last many lifetimes, so might his band.

Buying shirts or blouses, skirts and shorts, socks, underwear, shoes and a sports kit, any parent will agree can become quite expensive. The money they receive back, that small percentage of all the twenty baht, covers the cost of the uniforms, meaning the parents are not struggling to find money they don’t really have.

Bosch Thailand donates tools to Hand to Hand Foundation Bosch Thailand generously donated approximately $10,000 worth of tools to the Hand to Hand Foundation to assist them with their job training programs.

At the end of last year 150 wooden pallets were donated to the charity and after pulling them apart they began build simple stools.

As interest grew and skilled people came to teach, the foundation now has a small furniture making workshop.

All of the craftsmen and women are from local slums

and have little or no source of income. The income from the furniture they make and sell goes directly to the makers to help feed and educate their families.

The tools from Bosch have made it possible to make more intricate and professional pieces.

Bakery utensils such as a blender, mixer and grinder were also donated to help support the cooking program that is under the direction of Ma Mon, enabling ladies to earn an income and become financially stable.

As interest grew and skilled people came to teach, the foundation now has a small furniture making workshop.

Documentary test screened for the PCEC Member Ren Lexander, PhD, presented a documentary video about Pattaya’s Hand to Hand Foundation at the Sunday, May 26, meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC). The documentary, Slumdog Saints: The women who joined hands, is about the founding and journey of the Hand to Hand Foundation which was started to help kids and families in the slums.

There are expats who have lived in Pattaya for many years who don’t even realize that there are shanty slums within minutes of where they live. “What slums? There aren’t any slums in Pattaya.” (Conversation recently heard at a party.) Well, yes there are.

The documentary covered the founding of the Foundation and highlighted how it began in 2009 when three women joined hands: Margie Grainger who was then a teacher at an international school and two truly remarkable Thai ladies, Pai and Mon. There were parts with each of them describing how each became involved.

Their first project was starting a preschool for kids from the slums. As Margie Grainger says: “We opened up a preschool for the slum kids on the first day with 17 children.

No tables. No chairs. No books. Two single women

who never finished school.

Some recycled paper and recycled crayons. That’s what we had. And we started. And we just kept on going.

“And when we opened this preschool it was just incredible. People would laugh and say, ‘You’re crazy. Who do you think you are? You’re not the savior of the world. Margie, you need to calm down and realize you can’t do this. You don’t have sponsors. You don’t have resources. You don’t have teachers’.” And all of that was true.”

Nine years later, this can’tbe-done preschool has blossomed into a Foundation with its own premises and powerful ongoing programs.

The central heartbeat of Hand to Hand is to keep families together and enable loving but dirt-poor parents to keep the children they love and not have to give them up into orphanages. To do this, Hand to Hand: Gives weekly food parcels to families in the slums; Collects unwanted clothes and other goods and redistributes them to the poor, needy and desperate; Runs a preschool for slum kids; Hands out scholarships so that kids from the slums can go to school – all the way up to graduating from university; and Stitches together families out of surviving functional members of families.

After test screening his documentary, Slumdog Saints, Dr. Ren Lexander invited Margie Grainger to join him on stage to answer the many questions or remark on the comments from the PCEC audience.

There was a very moving story about Apple, a toddler taken from her dysfunctional parents and brought to Hand to Hand by the Thai police who had rescued her.

Hand to Hand took her in and started to heal the damage.

grandparents and found that they were homeless, living under a tree and didn’t even know they had a grandchild. So, Hand to Hand rented an inexpensive room for the grandparents and gave them a chance to build a relationship with their grandchild. They now live together as a family. Hand to Hand also gives Apple a scholarship so she can continue to go to school.

Also moving was the story of how Hand to Hand started to take in deaf children from the slums and teach them – and all the kids in the preschool – Thai sign language.

Dr. Lexander revealed that, in the course of making the documentary, he became “mates” (as they say in his native Australia) with the deaf girl, Pan. Within 60 seconds of meeting her, even though she couldn’t talk or hear, he realized she was bright. Her teachers confirmed that she was really

bright and also really good hearted. Pan now performs dance routines with other children – even though she cannot hear the music. Dr. Lexander shared a dream that he has formed - a dream that perhaps Pan could be

given a Cochlear ear implant and hear – and that perhaps someone who had the money to pay for it would one day see the documentary and say: “I want to help and be part of this dream… and I would like this sensitive, intelligent girl to hear.”

The documentary is slated

by Dr. Lexander to be the pilot for a documentary series called “Slumdog Saints”. It will be about leaders fighting for the tired, poor and huddled masses.

Observing the audience during the screening, it was obvious that many were emotionally affected; some were apparently choking back the tears while a few were failing to choke them back.

Around the world with ‘Bew’ Richard Talbot Almost a year has passed since Chonburi resident Kanyalak “Bew” Preedasuttijit stepped onto the 18th green at her home course at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club to claim a 1-shot victory in the 2018 European Thailand Ladies Championship.

As well as this victory giving her entries into both the 2018 Women’s British Open and the 2018 Evian Championship, it also gave her the opportunity to claim a twoyear membership of the Ladies European Tour. This tour is not the most popular destination for the majority of Thai players, who often choose to either chase their LPGA dreams in America or stay closer to home by playing in Japan and China.

Bew decided that playing on the European tour would be of greater benefit to her

game and the last 11 months has seen her crisscrossing the globe to compete in many far flung destinations: England, Scotland, France, Spain, India, Australia, Jordan, Dubai and Morocco have all been visited as Bew has established herself on the European Tour.

Her choice to pursue this career path was a brave decision as she is the only Thai national who plays regularly on this highly competitive circuit and the year has seen her playing out of her comfort zone. Yet she has successfully embraced not only the golf but the whole experience of travelling around the world.

plus sampling the delights of the Emirates shopping mall in Dubai. She has also experienced playing in many “first time” events organized by the LET, which she would not have done on any other tour.

In Dubai she played in the first ever professional floodlit tournament in which she finished in 13th place. This was only one week after playing in Morocco where the ladies shared the same course as the men from the PGA European Tour. In Jordan she competed in the first ever tournament that saw men competing against the ladies and was the 8th highest finishing lady.

The LET has been ideal for Bew and the tour has embraced her into its ranks.

This tour has organized events that in time every other tour will follow, yet as well as being innovative the

people in charge have displayed a personal touch that has made every player feel welcome, regardless of their country of origin.

On June 20 the LET arrives at the Phoenix Gold and Country Club for the 2019 European Thailand Open.

Kanyalak will be competing as will many other local Thai players, with the field including the 2017 winner Atthaya Thitikul.

It is quite fitting that the 2019 Phoenix Gold tournament is the last event before places for the Women’s British Open are confirmed.

Only the top 25 ranked players are sure of an entry and Bew’s 2019 record of only missing one cut means that with a good result on her home course an entry could be secured. Regardless of the outcome, this is one golf year that the 21 year old local girl will never forget.

South Korea’s Jeongeun Lee6 is No. 1 at US Women’s Open Pete Iacobelli Charleston, S.C. (AP) - Six is certainly a magic number for U.S. Women’s Open champion Jeongeun Lee6.

The 23-year-old South Korean won her first major title last Sunday, the first $1 million women’s winner’s check ever handed out by the USGA and her first victory as an LPGA Tour rookie. And she did by shooting 1-under 70 at Country Club of Charleston to finish at, naturally, 6-under 278.

“This is kind of really interesting how I finished 6 under at an LPGA tournament,” Lee6 said through an interpreter. “So, this is really lucky number to me.”

Lee6 has the number in her name because she was the sixth player with the name on the Korean LPGA. She has embraced the number, answering to it and writing a large “6'’ on her balls. Her South Korean fan club is called “Lucky 6.” Jeongeun Lee5 tied for 34th at 4-over, 10 shots behind Lee6.

Lee6 opened a three-shot lead with three holes to play before facing some nerves with bogeys on the 16th and

18th holes to tighten things up. But when third-round co-leader Celine Boutier’s blast from a greenside bunker on the 72nd hole rolled off the green, Lee6 had the biggest win of her life.

“I didn’t even expect to win the tournament this fast,” Lee6 said. “I think this is very lucky that I won this major championship tournament.”

Lee6, playing two groups ahead of Boutier, was practicing putts when the Frenchwoman could not make the sand shot. Lee6 bent down in joy when her victory was secure, countrywoman and 2011 U.S. Women’s Open winner So Yeon Ryu coming over to embrace the new champion.

“I felt pretty nervous starting on the holes 16, 17, and 18 after opening the large lead,” Lee6 said. “But I tried the best that I can.”

The victory came a few days after Tiger Woods’ former swing coach, Hank Haney, made disparaging remarks about women’s golf by predicting a “Korean” would win and “I’d go with Lee.” Haney was suspended for his comments on his PGA Tour SiriusXM radio show when asked who’d win. “I’d

Friday, May 31, Eastern Star Stableford Despite a lot of rain in the area, at arrival here the caddies

said there had been none on the course for some time so no ‘pick clean and place’ required today. The greens here are still improving each week and there were some tough pin placements.

The equal cut was set at 816and 17+ in the two divisions and 36 points was the best score of the day, coming from Tony Thorne to win division 2. Paul Butler beat his arch rival Frank Kelly 19/18 on countback for second place after they both came in with 32 points and Ron Lavett finished fourth, beating Mike Tutton on a 12/10 back-six countback after they both posted 30 points each.

The mad dentist Les Smith topped division 1 with 34 points, Steve Godfrey was second on 31 and Pete Sumner beat Paul Young on a 18/16 back-nine countback for third after two 30 pointers were returned.

Near pins went to (Div 1) Roger Awad, John Hughes and Les Smith, and (Div 2) Paul Butler, Bruce Gardner (2) and Tony Thorne.

It had been a while but a welcome return to form saw Kevin O’Sullivan (15) as a clear runaway winner today, with having 42 points. Second place went to Pete Seil (5) on 37 points and in third was Kevyn Wright (10) with 36. Fourth spot was decided on a countback on 35 points that went to the last 3 holes; Stuart Brown (7) took the money, leaving Paul Butler out of the places.

Tuesday, May 28, Laem Chabang Stableford We made what was a rare visit here to Leam Chabang today and found the course to be in what was probably the best condition we have ever seen it, and that is saying

something about this beautiful course. Although it is a bit more expensive here than most other courses the general consensus was that it is well worth the bit extra as it is such a magnificent golfing venue.

Today we played the B and C nines and Gerry Hannan (13), who was also celebrating his birthday, marked the day in style as he had what was one of our best scores in a very long time and he was a clear winner with an excellent forty-three points.

Also posting another excellent score but only good enough for second today was Jerry Sweetnam (9) with forty points. Shaun Merriman (11) came third with a more modest thirty five and we had no 2’s today.

It was a tight leaderboard today with 3 players all on 36 points. The countback went to the last 6 holes and here Glenn Armitstead (16) took the honours over Daryl Burket (13) and Jerry Sweetnam (9). Gerry Hannan (13) completed the podium on fourth with 35 points.

Tuesday, May 28, Crystal Bay Stableford On Tuesday we went with 3 groups to Crystal Bay where the B & C combination was played. The course was in reasonable condition but there were many bare places on the sides of the fairways. There is also still a big difference in the speed of the greens between the B and C courses. We had overcast weather so it was not too warm.

The course was not easy, with no roll after rain the night before, but this was no problem for Dave Smith who played a very consistent round with good drives and putts. He won the day with 40 stableford points ahead of Neil Harvey in second on

37 and Willem Lasonder third with 36.

The near pins went to Jonathan Pratt and Neil Harvey.

Thursday, May 30, Greenwood Stableford Greenwood was our venue on Thursday and the B & C course was the chosen challenge. The course was in perfect condition but there had been heavy rain the night before and this continued during our round also with a huge shower midway through.

Stan Rees was the most consistent under these circumstances and won with 38 points while Neil Harvey was again second with 35.

Greg and Kran get the medals PSC Golf from the Billabong Bar Monday, May 27, Phoenix Gold Stableford Phoenix today, playing the Mountain and Ocean loops in perfect conditions for golf.

The course was in spectacular condition with both greens and fairways receptive to any good shot or putt you made. We only had a small field but the scoring was still reasonable although not over the top, with only on golfer playing better than handicap.

There was a countback between Glenn Smith and Thiery Petrement for third place, with Thiery taking the bronze spot on the podium.

Second place went to Bill Marsden with 34 points and Lloyd Shuttleworth shot 77 gross off his 5 handicap for 38 points and top spot.

There were no 2s recorded.

As a foot note the Billabong will now be playing at two venues each Wednesday

Wednesday, May 29, Green Valley Monthly Medal The trip along the 36 to Green Valley was a nightmare today for there were 2 obstructive accidents and the normal 30 minute journey

took close to 1 hour so everyone was late on the tee.

So perhaps that was a contributory factor for the scores to be, by and large, average. We were pleased to see Brian Chapman, CEO of Haven Consultants, the longtime sponsor of the Billabong monthly medal which we played today.

Only three golfers did better than par and Miss Kran

(H/cap 22) was one of them with a net 69 despite an eight on the first hole and a seven to follow, but she recovered well on the way home to win the medal. The consistent Miss Noodle (13) cannot be ignored when she plays and today was no exception for she occupied 2nd place with a net 70. Miss Thip (18) came 3rd with a net 73 despite an eight on the par 14th. Miss

Porn (22) was level par for the first six holes but an 11 on the 7 th hole put a dent in her aspirations to end with a net 73, losing on a countback.

Selwyn Wegner (15) was surprised to finish 4th in the men’s flight with a net 74, just 1 behind Thiery Temine (23) who was having a bad time on the return trip, dropping 15 shots to lose a countback to Keith Allen (12) who had five consecutive 4s from the 14th hole.

For the second month in a row, Greg Ritchie (30) came out on top with a net 69 despite recording 3 sevens on his card.

Three 2s were recorded today, by Noodle, Sasicha and two from Les Smith.

Friday, May 31, Phoenix Gold Scramble On a day with dark clouds overhead we went to Phoenix for our monthly

scramble. The day started out great but then down came the rain for about 30 minutes. After it stopped out came the sun to make it kind of hot for a while. The course was in great condition, but the management are letting the rough grow and getting it ready for the ladies Thailand Open coming up later this month.

Coming in 3rd today with a score of 60.9 was the team of Bill Marsden, Miss May. Tim Lovell and Bob StAubin while 2nd place went to the Billabong A team of Sasicha, Nok, Todd and Sandy with a score of 60, having 16 birdie putts but only converting 5 was the telling story there.

Coming out on top today was the quartet of Gary Ritchie, Peter Bass, Arch Armstrong and Paul Hack with a score of 59.7.

Next month’s scramble will be held at Parachat Gold Club next door to the Pattaya Country Club.

This course was in its usual pristine condition so not much to add to previous descriptions.

At this time, if you are looking for great scores it is a case of “leave it to Beaver(s)” as he posted another big score of 42 points, his second Green Jacket in three days. The second and third placings in “B” flight went to a countback with two players on 39 points. It was Bernie Stafford, in a rare appearance at Links, who got there ahead of Tip Briney (the perennial wearer of the “wig” and “silly hat”).

“A” flight saw Peter Park still in good form but being

pushed this time by just returned Michael Wright. Both had 39 points with Peter just holding top spot, and of course, best gross of 73.

Tom Herrington runs hot and cold, but after a couple of weeks playing a lot of golf put it together for a good 36 points for third.

Near pins went to Livio Marrone (A2), Bryan Dore (A7), Tom Herrington (C5) and Kevin Rogers (C8) while the best nines by non-winners came from Stan Stewart (front, 21pts) and Maurice Roberts (back, 17pts).

Wednesday, May 29, Royal Lakeside – Stableford 1st Tip Briney (28) 43pts 2nd Peter Park (4) 39pts 3rd Jon Batty (7) 37pts 4th Michael Wright (7) 37pts 5th Bryan Dore (5) 37pts It was Royal Lakeside’s turn to host the society on Wednesday and the course was well presented but fairways were soft and a little fluffy as a result of the ubiquitous “Bangkok” daily rains but the lightly sanded greens were quicker than most in the region currently.

preferred lies for the day and it soon became apparent that scores would be good.

Indeed, a full field average of 34 points spoke volumes about the quality of the field and the golf course.

All the sub-par scorers were rewarded at the presentation, with fifth place going to Bryan Dore, losing on countback, with 37 points. Ahead of him was Michael Wright and in third place was Jon Batty, both with 37 points also. Second place went to Peter Park with another fine round of 39 points giving him the best gross score of the day, 74.

The flight winner was American regular Tip Briney who produced some consummate

golf for his best score ever with the group, 43 points. His club control belied his high handicap and his putting was spot on from the start, never suffering three putts on a hole.

Technicals in the form of “near pins” went to Maurice Roberts (3), John Doyle (6), Petur Petursson (12) and Phil Davies (15).

The best front-nine award went to Mark Sharp with 20 points whilst the back-nine winner was Iain Jones with 19 points.

With the East and South tracks here, we are not so sure. They seem to have been let go for a while. The notice indicated that green speed was 6.5.

This seemed a bit optimistic as putts were stopping short and, with grass growing nd

over the lip, appeared to have not changed positions for some days.

With a below standard golf course we had plenty of below standard scores today.

However, there is always one, or in this case, two, who defy the odds.

Colm O’Donovan got the Green Jacket with a solid, evenly-paced score of 40 points (20 pts on each nine is very good going). A long way off in second place in “A” flight was John Doyle, with 34 points, not bad with a 9-handicap, and third place was controversial but was awarded to Michael Wright on 33 points.

Tip Briney had already had a great week and today another 39 point rounded it off with a win in “B” flight, seven points clear of Torben Lindgaard in second, with Donal McGuigan again on the podium taking third spot with 29 points on countback.

Near pins went to Colin Service (E2), Phil Davies (E5), Darren Beavers (S13) and Michael Wright (S16) and the consolation ‘best nines’ were posted by Peter Park (front, 17pts) and Barry Oats (back 15pts).

Brett the man for May PSC Golf from the Bunker Boys

Monday, May 27, Laem Chabang A & C – Stableford 1st Michael Brett (16) 42pts 2nd Tony Plummer (18) 33pts 3rd Jimmy Carr (16) 31pts Monday saw another low season visit to the beautiful Laem Chabang course, which as always was in pristine condition. It didn’t matter whether on the fairway or the first cut of rough, one always had a good lie. The temperature was mild as the sky was overcast but there was no threat of rain.

Golf is a game that can mess with your head, in which case it becomes very difficult to play. Such was the case for today’s winner who had to take a two-week break from the game just to clear his head. Michael Brett cleaned up by winning all three sixes, the only near pin of the round and first place with forty-two points. This score could have been even better were it not for an accidental strike of the ball during a practice swing, which resulted in a double-bogey.

down requiring us to take shelter. As a consequence, despite the empty course the round took much longer to complete than we had hoped for and we also had need to seek relief from casual water on more than one occasion.

Coming off a series of very low scores by his standards, Les Cobban came back to his very best form today and took first place with an excellent round of thirty-nine off a seven handicap. He also monopolised the near pins taking three of them.

One of his near pins resulted in a three-putt from about ten feet, so he could have done even better.

On the other side of the spectrum following the heroics of Monday, Michael Brett had a big drop in form for no particular reason with only fifteen on the front nine but recovered somewhat on the back with nineteen for a thirty-four total to take second place. He also managed to get the remaining near pin.

Third place went to Jimmy Carr with thirty-one.

Any ball off the fairway sat down deep in the rough and was virtually impossible to play, just hack it out and take your medicine. A few of the greens are in need of some remedial work also.

We had a bunch of new faces for today’s round with a group of Melbournians making their presence felt.

Roger Miles took first place on thirty-four points and Graeme Mullins third on thirty-two. Holding up local honor was Michael Brett in between them in second place on thirty-three. Near pins went to Les Cobban, Roger Miles, Robby Watts, and Geoff Cox.

Liverpool beat Tottenham to win 6th European Cup Madrid (AP) — No tears of pain this time, just redemption for Mohamed Salah.

Only 108 seconds were needed to banish the Champions League final heartbreak of a year ago.

Once Salah dispatched his early penalty against Tottenham, Liverpool were on the path to a sixth European title with a 20 victory last Saturday, June 1.

And a year after defeat in the final to Real Madrid, Juergen Klopp has his first title after four years as Liverpool manager.

A shoulder injury forced Salah out of the Kiev showpiece last year.

This time it was Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko’s arm that gifted Liverpool the early penalty opening — blocking Sadio Mane’s shot after 21 seconds — and Salah converted from the spot after a video review check.

“I have sacrificed a lot for my career,” Salah said. “To come

from a village, to go to Cairo, and to be an Egyptian at this level is unbelievable for me.”

On a hot and humid night in Madrid, Tottenham came to life only in the final 20 minutes of their first European Cup final.

Thai racing driver Sandy Stuvik is currently lying 3rd in the Thailand Super Series standings and looking to step up a few positions at the next event at the Chang International Circuit on the 7-9 of June.

Stuvik will be partnering Estonian driver Martin Rump in the #2 B-Quik Racing Audi R8 GT3 Ultra. Rump has a lightning record of success in the Blancpain GT World Challenge in the past few years, all while driving an Audi. The Thai and Estonian duo should be ones to watch at this upcoming event at the beautiful Buriram circuit.

Stuvik will have a special event at the Buriram main grandstands on Saturday and Sunday where fans can win prizes, have a chat and take pictures with the Thai driver.

“I’m tremendously looking forward to being back in the awesome car prepared by team B-Quik Racing, and I can’t wait to see how we are around the Buriram circuit. Our Audi is very well balanced, so I think the Buriram circuit will fit in well with our R8 GT3 Ultra. I’m also excited to be joined with Martin Rump, he has a very impressive track record, so I’m sure that we will be fighting for the wins in the races,” said Stuvik.

Crusaders stunned in Super Rugby, Hurricanes close gap Durban, South Africa (AP) — The Crusaders lost for just the second time this season in Super Rugby when they let a 20-0 lead slip to be stunned by the Chiefs 40-27 last Saturday.

The Crusaders had their 20point advantage after just 20 minutes of the 10-try New Zealand derby but fell apart after that to give the Hurricanes a chance — although slim — of overtaking them at the top of the overall standings in the final two rounds of the regular season.

The Christchurch-based Crusaders’ shock defeat and the Wellington-based Hurricanes’ 30-17 win over the Sharks in a bad-tempered game cut the gap at the top of the New Zealand conference to nine points. The Hurricanes will win the conference and top the overall standings if they take maximum points

from their last two league games and the Crusaders lose their remaining game with no bonus point.

That’s critical as the standings leader will be at home in the playoffs and will host the final if they keep winning.

The Crusaders may be unlikely to lose two in a row but Saturday’s result revealed more late-season chinks in the defending champions’ armor. After being dominant for most of 2019, the Crusaders have two draws and a loss in their last five games.

The Crusaders made a quick start against the Chiefs in Suva, Fiji, scoring tries through Scott Barrett, Mitchell Drummond, and Fiji-born Sevu Reece.

Andy Murray to begin comeback from surgery at Queen’s Club London (AP) — Three-time major champion Andy Murray is planning to return from hip surgery by competing in doubles at the Queen’s Club tournament this month.

Petrucci beats Marquez for emotional 1st MotoGP victory Scarperia, Italy (AP) — Danilo Petrucci of Italy held off Marc Marquez to gain an emotional first ever MotoGP victory last Sunday in the Italian Grand Prix.

Titleholder Marquez briefly took the lead on the last lap but Petrucci managed to edge out the five-time champion by 0.043 seconds, much to the home fans’ delight.

The 28-year-old Petrucci could clearly be seen crying after he crossed the line at the Mugello circuit for his first win on his 125th start in the premier class.

Petrucci’s Ducati teammate Andrea Dovizioso was third, 0.338 off the pace.

Marquez, who had won three of the previous four races on his Honda, extended

lead to 27-19 at the start of the second half. But the Chiefs hit back again with a try to live-wire scrumhalf Brad Weber.

The Chiefs finally hit the front in the 66th when winger Shaun Stevenson broke the line and went under the crossbar. Jack Debreczeni’s conversion gave the Chiefs their first lead at 33-27.

Replacement Tumua Manu pounced on a short 22 restart in the 78th for the try which sealed the win and denied

Canadian GP this weekend

Another movie not to miss We’ve had the movie ‘Rush’ about Niki Lauda versus James Hunt in their epic quest for the F1 championship. Now sit back and watch the epic quest for triumph at Le Mans between Ford and Ferrari in 1966.

The result is “Ford v Ferrari,” a film that comes out later this year focusing not only on the American manufacturers’ unlikely upset of the Italian juggernaut but on those who made it happen.

Christian Bale portrays Ken Miles, an engineer and driver, and Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby, one of the most famous American car builders in history. Together, they took the financial backing of Ford and created the GT40, a car that not only conquered Le Mans but swept the 1966 podium.

“Racing is not just about oil and gasoline. It’s about blood and sweat as well as the people inside those cars as well, and that’s what makes it so thrilling,” Bale said.

“Ken Miles was a purist,” Bale said. “He’s someone that would try to win every single battle but often lose the war, and he’d shoot himself in the foot again and again and again. And it wasn’t until Shelby came along and gave him an opportunity that he finally made it on the world stage.”

While Miles was the British-born driver with the sardonic sense of humor, Shelby was essentially his foil: a down-to-earth Texan who

had a successful driving career of his own before reaching iconic status as the creator of the Shelby Cobra, a series of Ford muscle cars and, yes, the GT40.

His relationship with Miles serves as the centerpiece of Ford’s dogged pursuit of Ferrari.

“He was a really, kind of a bigger-than-life guy,” said Damon, “but I didn’t know this story about their friendship, and that’s why I wanted to do the movie. It’s such a great underdog story.”

The story, the subject of a 2016 documentary entitled “The 24 Hour War,” began in the early 1960s, when Enzo Ferrari expressed interest in selling his company. Henry Ford II spent considerable resources doing background work on a potential deal, only for Ferrari to suddenly shut down negotiations.

That chapped Ford, who

ordered his racing division to build a car to beat Ferrari, the Italian sports car company that had come to dominate endurance racing.

But despite pumping untold sums of money into its program, Ford kept running into problems with its project. So it ultimately turned it over to Shelby, who in turn sought out Miles, and together they not only got the program on track but also got it to victory lane in their first try at Le Mans.

“There’s that relationship, right? And the friction in that relationship. They’re opposites in so many ways,” Damon said. “But they have the qualities the other needs.

Carroll was great about politics and diplomacy. He could sell you anything. He understood that was a big part of putting a winning team on the grid, was the politics of it. Whereas Miles was horrible at that stuff.”

Walt Disney Studios is due to release it Nov. 15 under the 20th Century Fox banner.

In the 1960’s the rivalry between French and English speaking Canada meant that the country’s Grand Prix alternated between Mosport Park one year and MontTremblant the next. By 1970, however, Mont-Tremblant was deemed too dangerous and the race was moved full time to Mosport Park.

In 1977 the French Canadians, motivated by the incredible success of Gilles Villeneuve, decided to take the Ile Notre-Dame and connected all the island’s roads and made a circuit. The island had been the home of the 1967 World Fair (Expo’67) and was full of futuristic looking buildings.

The first F1 race was held there in October 1978. Gilles Villeneuve, in his first season with Ferrari, was yet to win an F1 race, but at his home Grand Prix he took a memorable debut victory. Following his death in 1982, the track was renamed in his honor.

With the time differential, the Canadian GP telecast will be seen at 1 a.m. Thai time.

The winners at this Canadian F1 track include Michael Schumacher who holds the record of having won seven times in Canada. It is also the scene of Jean Alesi’s single Grand Prix victory in 1995, driving the number 27 Ferrari, the same car number which was carried by Gilles Villeneuve.

The final corner of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve became well known for crashes involving former World Champions. In 1999, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve all crashed into the same wall which had the slogan Bienvenue au Québec (Welcome to Quebec) on it.

The wall became ironically known as the “Wall of Champions”. The wall also was involved in a crash with Ricardo Zonta, who was, at the time, the reigning FIA GT sports car champion. In recent years, then GP2 Champion Nico Rosberg, CART Champion Juan Pablo Montoya and Jenson Button have all fallen victim to the wall. In 2011 Friday practice the wall claimed the reigning F1 Champion Sebastian Vettel.

Before the wall was named it also claimed 1992 World Sportscar Champion and longtime F1 driver Derek Warwick who spectacularly crashed his Arrows-Megatron during qualifying for the 1988 Canadian Grand Prix.

Fiat Chrysler wants to form global giant with Renault Paris (AP) — Fiat Chrysler proposed on Monday to merge with France’s Renault to create the world’s thirdbiggest automaker and combine their investments in the race to make new electric and autonomous vehicles.

The merged company would reshape the global industry: it would make some 8.7 million vehicles a year, leapfrogging General Motors and trailing only Volkswagen and Toyota.

Shares of both companies jumped over 10 percent on the news of the offer, which would see each side’s shareholders split ownership in the new manufacturer.

Renault welcomed the idea.

The company’s board met Monday at its headquarters outside Paris to discuss the proposal and said afterward that Renault will study it “with interest.” In a statement, Renault said such a fusion could “improve Renault’s industrial footprint and be a generator of additional value for the Alliance” with Japan’s Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Fiat Chrysler’s offer comes at a key moment for Renault.

Now, questions are growing over the Renault-NissanMitsubishi alliance, which is the biggest maker of passenger cars in the world. While Fiat Chrysler says the merger with Renault would accommodate the alliance and lead to savings for them, it is unclear how the Japanese companies might react in the longer term to being tied to a much larger partner.

A deal would save 5 billion euros ($5.6 billion) for the merged companies each year by sharing research, purchasing costs and other activities, Fiat Chrysler said in a statement. It said the deal would involve no plant closures, but didn’t address potential job cuts.

The companies are largely complementary: Fiat Chrysler is stronger in the U.S. and SUV markets, while Renault is stronger in Europe and on electric vehicle developments. Together, they would be worth almost $40 billion euros.

Analysts at financial firm Jefferies said it was “hard to disagree with the logic” of the deal as there is a strong fit in the markets each company covers and the brands they offer.

“The elephant in the room is who will run the entity,” analysts Philippe Houchois and Himanshu Agarwal wrote in a note to investors.

Mergers of equals can be difficult to manage over questions of who gets the top leadership positions and which brands are promoted and invested in most. A tieup between Daimler and Chrysler in the 1990s was billed as a merger of equals, but it collapsed nine years later amid cultural differences and recriminations.

Investors were nevertheless enthusiastic, pushing shares in Fiat Chrysler up 11 percent and Renault 14 percent in European trading.

The French government, which owns 15 percent of Renault, said it is “favorable” to the idea of a merger with Fiat Chrysler but wants to study its conditions more carefully, especially in terms of “Renault’s industrial development” and employees’ working conditions, government spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye said.

Such a merger would show “our capacity to respond to European and French sovereignty challenges in a globalized context,” she said.

“We need giants to be built in Europe.”

Collaboration between automakers has taken on greater importance in recent years as they seek to build their technological capabilities in pursuit of electrical vehicles, net connectivity and artificial intelligence for vehicles. Automakers are also under pressure from regulators, particularly in Europe and China, to come up with electric vehicles so they can meet tougher climate change regulations and after scandals over the amount of pollutants engines truly emit.

There was still two courses to go and the next was a slow cooked marinated rump of lamb on a light wasabi mash with herb reduction and roasted roots. The wine to go with this was the Y Series Cabernet Sauvignon 3017, very pleasant but the Shiraz Viognier was still the top wine.

The final course was a Jansz Premium Cuvee Brut, Pipers River, NV, lots of bubbles did make this an amusing wine and a great finish for the evening with the Royal Cliff ’s own chocolate pralines.

Giuseppina’s Pumpkin Soup Pumpkins are plentiful. European Executive Chef Santo Zoppis I met some years ago and who used to come down to Pattaya at the weekends, assured me that this really is one of those secret recipe’s handed down through the generations, given to Santo by his mother, Giuseppina.

Santo puts aside 10 minutes for preparation and 25 minutes for cooking, so it is a quick and easy soup. Santo (or his mother) may kill me for this, but although the recipe calls for fresh Thyme, dried Thyme could be used if the fresh product is unavailable.

Ingredients Cleaned pumpkin Milk Onion Butter Rice Fresh thyme Salt and pepper to taste

Serves 6 500 gm 1.2 liters 80 gm 30 gm 50 gm 1 pinch

Cooking Method Peel the pumpkin, remove the seeds and cut into small pieces and peel the onion and cut into slices.

Heat the butter in a soup pot, add the onion and pumpkin, and cook over a low heat for 3 minutes. Add the milk, rice and fresh thyme; simmer gently until the pumpkin is cooked (about 20 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.

Now place the entire mixture into a blender and blend until smooth. Reheat the soup and serve immediately.

Ruiz stuns Joshua for heavyweight title at MSG Dan Gelston New York (AP) — Andy Ruiz Jr. had six weeks to prepare for the fight of his life.

He’ll have a lifetime to celebrate one of boxing’s biggest heavyweight stunners.

A massive underdog just like Buster Douglas, Ruiz knocked down British champion Anthony Joshua four times, and the final two in the

seventh round proved the decisive blows.

Ruiz, the first heavyweight of Mexican descent to win a heavyweight title, capped one of boxing’s epic upsets to win Joshua’s shares of the heavyweight championship last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

Ruiz etched his name in heavyweight lore by TKO at 1:27 in the seventh round to become the surprise champ in a bout that had shades of Douglas’ upset over Mike Tyson for the heavyweight title in 1990. Ruiz barely was on anyone’s heavyweight radar when he was summoned as a replacement to fight the undefeated Joshua in front of a packed Garden.

Considered a joke by fans, all Ruiz did was dominate the British champion and used a TKO to turn his life and the heavyweight division upside down. Ruiz racked up 32 wins without beating many boxers of note and walked into the ring with a waistline that will need a supersized championship belt.

Ruiz, a flabby fighter out of Southern California, came up short in his only other shot at a world title, having lost on points to then-WBO champion Joseph Parker in December 2016.

Ruiz even warned Joshua before the fight: “Don’t underestimate this little fat boy.”

The 270-pound heavyset heavyweight knocked down Joshua twice in the third round and did it two more times in the seventh before referee Mike Griffin ended the fight. Joshua was woozy and seemed to stumble toward the wrong corner after the final blow.

Jarrell Miller’s failed drug tests sent the challenger to the sideline and paved the way for Ruiz’s unexpected title shot.

Ruiz (33-1, 21 KO’s) seized the opportunity and made boxing history to win the WBA/IBF/ WBO/IBO championships.

He raised his arms in celebration and jumped around the ring as his corner quickly mobbed him and a wild celebration kicked off.

“I’ve got that Mexican blood in me,” he said. “Talking about the Mexican style? I just proved it.”

The true shock might have been that the Garden was packed on a Saturday night for a fight few expected to be competitive. Yes, Ruiz is up

there with Douglas and Hasim Rahman for who-can-believeit wins, but casual sports fans don’t even know the names of most boxing champions — consider, instead of pay-perview parties, this card was streamed by DAZN. When ring announcer Michael Buffer announced the name of the judges “should this fight go the distance,” fans laughed at the ridiculous possibility as Ruiz was an ultimate underdog.

Joshua (22-1, 22 KO’s) and Ruiz were both knocked down in an electrifying third round that had the sellout crowd of 20,201 howling with each heavy hit. Joshua knocked down Ruiz early in the round and the promise

of an early finish seemed on the horizon.

Ruiz, his trunks a bit too low for his portly frame, came right back and used an overhand right that rocked the champ and sent him to the canvas.

Joshua recovered only to get pummeled in the corner. Ruiz knocked him down again in the final ticks of the round as fans in a disbelieving Garden crowd screamed “Oh my God!” Again, Joshua beat the count but the bell saved the Brit from a going a second longer in his weakened state.

Had it not been a championship fight, perhaps Griffin would have stopped the bout.

Alas, for Joshua, it went on.
