Sonthaya Kunplome mayor of Pattaya City

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha on Tuesday used his powers under section 44 to appoint Sonthaya Kunplome mayor of Pattaya City.

The PM stated it is important things need to be done correctly for Pattaya City to continue its smooth administration while the laws of the regional election are being drafted.

He also stated a solid administration in Pattaya will be needed to facilitate business in the Eastern Economic Corridor, and to boost domestic and foreign investment, basic infrastructure, and to upgrade cities in the area to international levels.

Four deputy mayors will be selected at a later date.

Roads looked more like estuaries throughout the city, leaving cars and motorbikes stranded and creating large tailbacks.

Areas inundated included Sukhumvit Road, especially in South Pattaya, Third Road, Soi Khao Noi, the Mab Pradoo Community, Railway Road near Soi Khao Talo/Sukhumvit, North, Central, and South Roads, Beach Road, which was flooded from North to South leaving only one usable traffic lane, and much of Nongprue Municipality.

Rescue officials were kept busy helping flood victims, while city officials sent crews out to pump water to try and make roads passable again.

The original schedule called for the entire beach to be rebuilt by Nov. 19, but that clearly won’t happen at the pace contractors are moving.

Prachin Buri cop, Naklua gangster charged in Pattaya restaurant shootout Teerarak Suthathiwong A Prachin Buri police officer is facing attempted murder charges after shooting a Naklua gangster in a Pattaya restaurant.

Pol. Lance Cpl. Naretruk Kurwara, from the Wangkondang Police Station, surrendered himself and the gun used after the Sept. 17 shootout at the All New Mouthburi restaurant on Third Road.

He claimed the shooting was justified and in self-defense, as he was returning fire at Somchai “Chai Wat Pho” Chua, who had just shot Pattaya Pol. Sgt. Maj. Pawaret Bangong in the arm.

Pawaret was in stable condition with a broken arm following the shooting.

Somchai, however, was shot several times and remained in serious condition. Police have charged him with attempted murder and carrying an illegal weapon in public.

Shooting broke out after Somchai and an unidentified woman got into a heated argument in the restaurant.

Pawaret tried to break it up when Somchai pulled a gun.

Pattaya police chief Pol. Col. Apichai Kroppech said the charges against Naretruk

are still being investigated and it was indeed possible he discharged the gun in self-defense. However, the weapon was not his. It belonged to Pawaret. The Prachin Buri officer grabbed it after the Pattaya officer went down.

Patcharapol Panrak Police are searching for seven men masquerading as fake narcotics officers who kidnapped and robbed two women in Sriracha.

Saranya Srichamnan, 23, filed a police complaint Sept. 22 saying she and a friend were headed to meet a third friend named Tan at a nightclub in Bo Win Sept. 15 when they were stopped by the fake cops, who claimed Tan had been named in arrest warrant for using drugs.

Saranya she believed them as, in fact, she had done drugs with Tan a week earlier.

The gang loaded up their motorbike on a pickup truck and pushed the two women into a black sedan, then took them to a “safe house” on Sukhumvit Soi 79.

There Saranya’s friend was coerced into transferring 35,000 baht to a woman named Narinthorn Tasuwan and give up a gold ring.

Officers seized 91 methamphetamine tablets and 105 grams of crystal meth.

Manop previously served 11 years in prison for drug dealing and Chaipat also has drug arrests, officials said.

Pattaya-area police arrested 20 Chinese nationals accused of running online gambling sites and boiler rooms to bilk mainland residents.

Chonburi, Pattaya, Nongprue, Tourist and Transnational Crime Coordination Center police announced the arrests Sept. 19 following raids on four Pattaya and Jomtien Beach addresses.

Six Chinese were captured at a rented house on Soi Khao Talo where they operated online sports-betting

and casino websites. Officers seized computers, mobile phones and 36 ATM cards.

The suspects were charged with various immigration offenses, online theft and working without a permit.

Police said the operation, allegedly run by Liew Chang, had daily turnover of 2.3 million baht with Liew paid more than 1.3 million baht a month.

Officers then raided Viewpoint Village in South Pattaya, Lumpini Condo and Jomtien Seaview on Jomtien Beach Road where 14 Chinese nationals were apprehended,

along with 15 notebook computers.

They allegedly partook in a boiler room enticing Chinese back home to invest in dodgy gold and petroleum stocks as well as foreign currency. In typical fashion, the initial small investments paid off handsomely and the call-center operators went back for more. The stocks then tanked and the operation closed down, cheating the investors out of all their cash.

Police said they are working with the Chinese embassy to help identify the victims.

Teen boys charged with attempted rape of 4-year-old Teerarak Suthathiwong Three teenage boys have been arrested for teaming up for an attempted rape of a 4year-old in a Pattaya-area school restroom.

A 16-year-old boy identified only as New was charged with trying to penetrate the kindergarten girl at the unnamed Banglamung District school Sept. 17. Two other boys, ages 14 and 18, were charged with facilitating the attack.

Former Social Development and Human Security Minister Paveena Hongsakula – who now heads the Paveena Foundation for Children and Women – was called into the case at

Laem Chabang Hospital, where the girl was examined.

She called the assault on a 4-year-old by older students on school grounds unacceptable and said both the school and the Education Ministry needs to improve security, separate boys and girls toilets, install security cameras and hire a restroom minder to protect students.

The assault on the girl was noticed by her teacher when, during nap time, she noticed blood on the tyke’s underwear. In questioning by her

mother and teachers, the girl said she was going to the restroom behind the classrooms when she was confronted by the three boys.

She said she was “stabbed” by one – confusing the pain of attempted intercourse with a knife – and screamed in pain. They then let her go. A check at the hospital confirmed the assault.

He was arrested a month later when he appeared the Jomtien immigration office.

His gang of 25 reportedly burglarized wealthy houses and apartments, coming away with 100 million yen in goods. Ten other gang members already have been apprehended. Goto was prepared for extradition.

Deputy District Chief Chatchai Sriphoon said Sept.

21 that a meeting will be scheduled to address complaints by bars and clubs that collection agents – both real and fake – continue to pester them over paying just to play music in their businesses. Many times, bar owners complain, they’re being forced to pay multiple

times for the same license.

Meanwhile, music companies claim they’re losing out on revenue legally guaranteed them and have threatened to sue entertainment venues.

Banjong Banthoonprayuk, a former Pattaya city councilman and now president of Pattaya Music Association, said copyright holders want to find an amicable resolution, as some bars had been paying fake agents for as many as 10 years.

Chai Mongkol, manager of Kaffa Music Co., who collects fees on behalf of MPC Co., said his employees help entertainment establishments fairly apprise copyright values

and compromises with business owners to reach a fair payment.

He said MPC has sued businesses, through its legal arm Taka Co., but Kaffa wasn’t a party to any lawsuits.

Deputy District Chief Prapan Prathumcumpu said even hotels and restaurants need to know about music copyrights and pay to play songs.

Representatives from copyright collection companies and Ministry of Commerce will be invited to explain relevant laws. So many businesses are involved that the Eastern National Indoor Sports Stadium may be needed to host the meeting.

Jomtien Beach Upgrades – Done Wrong Editor; Are there government inspectors for the paving stone projects being performed at Jomtien Beach?

The projects fail to meet common construction requirements.

1. The sand they are using by the Jomtien Condotel & Village is Builder’s Sand, not the proper Sharp Sand.

I examined it with a magnifying glass. The problem is that the Builder’s Sand particles are too small and wash away. Builder’s Sand is not sifted to the correct particle size.

2. Given how fast other paving areas are falling apart, I’m sure they are using Beach Sand instead of the proper Sharp Sand. I haven’t checked those with a magnifying glass yet. The problem is that Beach Sand particles are round and easily wash away. Sharp Sand particles are jagged crushed rock and stay in place.

3. There is no cement in the sand mix beneath the pavers. The mix should be 6 parts sand to 1 part cement and barely moist. The problem is that any foot traffic or vehicle traffic will cause the

stones to shift later.

4. They are not using any spacers between the stones, whether temporary on top or permanent below.

10 mm spacers are the standard. The problem is that the sand will not distribute between the stones properly and will fail to absorb mechanical stress.

I can send you photos of the previous paving stone projects falling apart and the current paving stone project being performed incorrectly.

Massive boom hopes to corral Pacific Ocean’s plastic trash Olga R. Rodriguez San Francisco (AP) Engineers set to sea last Saturday to deploy a trash collection device to corral plastic litter floating between California and Hawaii in an attempt to clean up the world’s largest garbage patch in the heart of the Pacific Ocean.

The 2,000-foot (600-meter) long floating boom was being towed from San Francisco to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - an island of trash twice the size of Texas.

The system was created by The Ocean Cleanup, an organization founded by Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old innovator from the Netherlands who first became passionate about cleaning the oceans when he went scuba diving at age 16 in the Mediterranean Sea and saw more plastic bags than fish.

“The plastic is really persistent and it doesn’t go away by itself and the time to act is now,” Slat said, adding that researchers with his organization found plastic

going back to the 1960s and 1970s bobbing in the patch.

The buoyant, U-shaped barrier made of plastic and with a tapered 10-foot (3meter) deep screen, is intended to act like a coastline, trapping some of the 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic that scientists estimate are swirling in that gyre but allowing marine life to safely swim beneath it.

Fitted with solar power lights, cameras, sensors and satellite antennas, the cleanup system will communicate its position at all times, allowing a support vessel to fish out the collected plastic every few months and transport it to dry land where it will be recycled, said Slat.

Shipping containers filled with the fishing nets, plastic bottles, laundry baskets and other plastic refuse scooped up by the system being deployed Saturday are expected to be back on land within a year, he said.

Slat said he and his team will pay close attention to whether the system works efficiently and withstands

harsh ocean conditions, including huge waves. He said he’s most looking forward to a ship loaded with plastic coming back to port.

“We still have to prove the technology... which will then allow us to scale up a fleet of systems,” he said.

The Ocean Cleanup, which has raised $35 million in donations to fund the project, including from Salesforce. com chief executive Marc Benioff and PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel, will deploy 60 free-floating barriers in the Pacific Ocean by 2020.

“One of our goals is to remove 50 percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years,” Slat said.

The free-floating barriers are made to withstand harsh weather conditions and constant wear and tear. They will stay in the water for two decades and in that time collect 90 percent of the trash in the patch, he added.

that goal because even if plastic trash can be taken out of the ocean, a lot more is pouring in each year.

“We at the Ocean Conservancy are highly skeptical but we hope it works,” he said. “The ocean needs all the help it can get.”

Leonard said 9 million tons (8 million metric tons) of plastic waste enter the ocean annually and that a solution must include a multi-pronged approach, including stopping plastic from reaching the ocean and more education so people reduce consumption

of single use plastic containers and bottles.

“If you don’t stop plastics from flowing into the ocean, it will be a Sisyphean task,” Leonard said, citing the Greek myth of a task never completed. He added that on September 15 about 1 million volunteers around the world will collect trash from beaches and waterways as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s annual International Coastal Cleanup. Volunteers last year collected about 10,000 tons of plastics worldwide over two hours, he said.

Leonard also raised concerns that marine and wildlife could be entangled by the net that will hang below the surface. He said he hopes Slat’s group is transparent with its data and shares information with the public about what happens with the first deployment.

“He has set a very large and lofty goal and we certainly hope it works but we really are not going to know until it is deployed,” Leonard said.

“We have to wait and see.”

The system will act as a “big boat that stands still in the water” and will have a screen and not a net so that there is nothing for marine life to get entangled with. As an extra precautionary measure, a boat carrying experienced marine biologists will be deployed to make sure the device is not harming wildlife, Slat said.

“I’m the first to acknowledge this has never done before and that it is important to collect plastic on land and close the taps on plastic entering into the ocean, but I also think humanity can do more than one thing at a time to tackle this problem,” Slat said.

Apple, Firefox tools aim to thwart Facebook, Google tracking Anick Jesdanun New York (AP) - Facebook and other companies routinely track your online surfing habits to better target ads at you. Two web browsers now want to help you fight back in what’s becoming an escalating privacy arms race.

New protections in Apple’s Safari and Mozilla’s Firefox browsers aim to prevent companies from turning “cookie” data files used to store sign-in details and preferences into broader trackers that take note of what you read, watch and research on other sites.

Lance Cottrell, creator of the privacy service Anonymizer, said Apple’s effort was particularly significant, as it takes aim at a technique developed by tracking companies to override users’ attempts to delete their cookies.

Safari makes these protections automatic in updates coming Tuesday to iPhones and iPads and a week later to Mac computers. Firefox has similar protections on Apple mobile devices and is rolling out them out to personal computers in the coming months.

To get the protections, you’ll have to break your habit of using Google’s Chrome browser, which by some estimates has more than half of the worldwide browser usage. Safari and Firefox have less than 20 percent combined.

Even then, Safari and Firefox can’t entirely stop tracking. For starters, they won’t block tracking when you’re using Facebook or Google itself. Nor can they help much when you use phone or tablet apps, unless the app happens to embed Safari, as Twitter’s iPhone app does.

But Will Strafach, a mobile security expert who is designing data security tools for phones, said imperfect protection is better than no protection. He notes that burglars can still break down a door, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bother locking it.

Cookies and other trackers can be used by companies

to keep track of who you are as you move from website to website. The companies can build a digital profile as you, say, read about Democratic or Republican viewpoints, buy a particular brand of pet food or indulge in the entire season of “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.”

News, video and other third-party sites use Google and Facebook cookies to customize ads to your hobbies and interests, rather than hawking products you might never buy. That’s why you might see an ad for shoes soon after searching for them elsewhere.

Apple says its tests show that some popular websites are embedded with more

than 70 such trackers. Many of these are from Facebook and Google, which are expected to command a combined 57 percent of the $107 billion U.S. digital advertising market this year, according to the research group eMarketer.

Though general awareness of data collection has grown in the wake of Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal, how trackers work behind the scenes remains a mystery to many people.

Ghostery and other products have long offered tracking protection. The browsers are now trying to incorporate that directly so you don’t have to go looking for browser add-ons.

Safari will try to automatically distinguish cookies that are useful from ones that are there just to track you. Apple notes that cookies can appear in unexpected places, such as sites that embed “like” and “share” buttons. Now, those cookies will be blocked until you click on one of those buttons, in which case you’ll be prompted for permission to allow the tracking. If you don’t, your “like” won’t register.

Safari is also attacking a technique developed to circumvent cookie deletions.

Through “fingerprinting,” a company can identify you through your computer’s characteristics, such as browser type and fonts installed. Your new cookie can then be tied to your old profile. Safari will now limit the technical details it sends.

Firefox has an anti-tracking feature that also tries to distinguish tracking cookies from useful ones. It’s on by default only on Apple’s mobile devices. Mozilla is testing a broader rollout for personal computers, though its plans for Android are not yet known. For now, you need to turn it on or use a private-browsing mode, which gets more aggressive at killing cookies, including useful ones.

For PCs, Firefox also has an optional add-on, called Facebook Container, to segregate your Facebook activity from everything else.

Think of it as a wall that

prevents Facebook from accessing its data cookie as you surf elsewhere. A version is available for other trackers, too, but requires configuration on your part.

None of the Firefox tools, though, address fingerprinting.

Unsurprisingly, advertisers aren’t happy.

In a statement, Interactive Advertising Bureau executive Dennis Buchheim said that even as browsers makers feel pressured to deliver privacy-centric features, they should consider the importance of advertising in enabling free services.

The new Safari and Firefox tools don’t block ads. But without cookies, websites might get paid a lot less for them, said Jed Williams, chief innovation officer at the Local Media Association, an industry group for news publishers.

Apple and Mozilla are able to push the boundaries on privacy because neither depends on advertising.

Google makes most of its money from selling ads.

Facebook and Google declined comment on the Safari and Firefox tools. But Google said its Chrome browser offers tools to control and delete cookies and set preferences for certain websites. Google says users can also decline personalization and get generic ads instead, though tracking continues in the background while using the company’s services.

Thrush - an evil little bird!

Hands up all women who have had at least one episode of “Thrush” in their lifetime. Half of you have just raised your hands. Does this mean I am psychic? The next David Copperfield? No. Thrush, or vaginal Candidiasis as we should correctly call it, is the most common gynecological disorder in the world, with more than 50 percent of women being affected.

So just why do 50 percent of women get this problem? The accusatory finger has been pointed at glucose metabolism, antibiotic use (or abuse), diet, nylon knickers, sexual activity, menstrual cycles, hygiene, chocolate cake and bicycles.

While it would appear that the causes are about as many as the theories, we should look at the basics first. What is the organism? Answer: It is just one of the “Yeast” organisms, of which there are a few, but the culprit is one called Candida albicans. Pathology slips that say “Candida species were observed” could be identifying Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis or Saccharomyces cerevisiae, all of whom do not cause symptoms or require treatment, despite their grandiose names. (I wonder who gives these

things such names, and what they called their children?

The mind boggles!)

Medical science has managed to show that women who are diabetic or who are immunocompromised are prone to this infection, but amazingly, the vast majority of sufferers are in other ways perfectly normal. However, with a little bit of investigation it appears that all these women have high estrogen levels in the vagina.

If you are doubtful of this, read on - newborn children get a rush of estrogens from their mother at birth, and until those estrogen levels fall after a few weeks, vaginal Candidiasis can occur. Young pre-pubertal girls have low estrogen levels and do not get Candidiasis; however, after puberty, when the levels rise, it does become a problem. During pregnancy is when a woman experiences her highest estrogen levels, and a common complication of pregnancy - Candidiasis. During breast feeding, estrogen levels are low, and, you guessed it - no Candidiasis.

Women who have passed the menopause, when estrogen production falls, do not get Candidiasis, but when

put on Hormone Replacement Therapy (usually referred to as HRT) will get it if the estrogen in the HRT is too strong. Believe now?

So what to do about this troublesome condition? Well there are various agents, called “azoles” which do curtail its spread and chase it away, the simplest being vaginal tablets inserted one daily for around a week. There are shorter courses available, but it has been my experience that recurrences are more frequent with the shorter treatment cycles.

For the recurrent cases of Candidiasis, and for some women this can be a real problem, then oral “azoles” taken for up to six months, in conjunction with local treatment, may be necessary. However, these agents when used for a continuous period of time can have a few side effects, and Liver Function Tests should be done. And don’t forget, if you are on HRT and are getting Thrush, then see your doctor, you may need HRT with a lower estrogen dose.

It is difficult being a woman, but men get their own “male” problems too. Be thankful you haven’t got a prostate.

Mind-altering breast milk? New pot study poses that question Lindsey Tanner Chicago (AP) Marijuana’s main mind-altering ingredient was detected in nursing mothers’ breast milk in a small study that comes amid evidence that more U.S. women are using pot during pregnancy and afterward.

Experts say the ingredient, THC, has chemical properties that could allow it to disrupt brain development and potentially cause harm, although solid evidence of that is lacking.

The new study involved 50 nursing mothers who were using pot and provided breast milk samples to researchers at the University of California, San Diego.

Lab testing found small amounts of THC, the psychoactive chemical that causes marijuana’s “high,” in 34 of 54 samples up to six days after they were provided. Another form of THC and cannabidiol, a pot chemical touted by some as

a health aid, were detected in five samples.

The study authors said “it is reasonable to speculate” that exposing infants to THC or cannabidiol “could influence normal brain development,” depending on dose and timing.

The results echo findings in case reports from years ago, when pot was less potent than what’s available today, said study co-author Christina Chambers, a pediatrics professor. It’s not known if the amounts detected pose any risk, but she said her research team is studying children whose moms’ were involved to try to answer that question.

Two small studies from the 1980s had conflicting results on whether pot use affects breastfed infants. One found no evidence of growth delays; the other found slight developmental delays in breastfed infants, but their mothers h a d u s e d p o t during pregnancy too.

Most pediatricians encourage breastfeeding and its health benefits for infants, but “they’re stuck with a dilemma” with infants whose mothers use pot, Chambers said.

A new American Academy of Pediatrics report recommending against pot use while pregnant or nursing acknowledges that challenge.

“We still support women breastfeeding even if using marijuana but would encourage them to cut down and quit,” said Dr. Seth Ammerman, a report co-author and Stanford University pediatrics professor.

“In counseling patients about this, it’s important to be nonjudgmental but to educate patients about the potential risks and benefits,” Ammerman said, to ensure “a healthy outcome for themselves and their baby.”

The study and report were published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

The American College of

Obstetricians and Gynecologists has similar advice.

The academy report says its advice is based on theoretical risks to developing brains, but it acknowledges conflicting evidence and a dearth of research. Some studies have linked pot use during pregnancy with lower birth weights or preterm birth, along with developmental delays and learning difficulties in older children. But additional factors including women’s use of other drugs during pregnancy complicated the results, the report says.

Marijuana is legal for recreational use in nine states and Washington, D.C., and for medical use in 31 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

As more states legalize marijuana, its use is increasing along with the “false impression” that it is safe, the academy’s report says. Ammerman said caution makes sense, given the uncertainties.

UN cancer agency: 18 million new cancer cases this year Jamey Keaten Geneva (AP) - The World Health Organization’s cancer research arm estimated in a report released this month that there will be about 18 million new cases of cancer globally this year and more than 9 million deaths.

The numbers published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer were slightly higher than those in the last world-wide update in 2012, when officials expected 14 million new cancer cases and 8 million deaths. Experts said the increase could be partly attributed to population growth and aging, but that individuals could do more to reduce their chance of getting sick.

“A lot of those (cancer cases) could be prevented, with key prevention efforts focusing on some of the main risk factors which we have heard about: tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity and improper diet,” said Dr. Etienne Krug, director of WHO’s department of non-communicable diseases.

Krug said it was also critical that countries ensure access to fast diagnosis and treatment, noting: “For those who have cancer, cancer should not be a death sentence anymore.”

The research agency’s report said nearly 44 million people in the world are alive five years after being diagnosed with cancer. Based on

data from 185 countries, the report estimated that one in five men and one in six women will develop cancer during their lifetimes.

The UN researchers said lung cancer kills the most people, followed by breast cancer in women and colorectal cancer.

Since lung cancer often develops over decades, any decrease in the disease’s frequency from declining smoking rates likely won’t be seen for years.

The cancer research agency said more than half of all cancer deaths will occur in Asia, home to 60 percent of the world’s population. Europe accounts for about 23 percent of cancer cases while the Americas accounts for

21 percent. Africa has approximately 7 percent of the world’s cancer cases, but the continent’s death rate tends to be higher, mainly because cancers aren’t caught early or aren’t easily treatable given the limited health resources there.

In developed countries, prevention efforts are helping drive down the rates of various cancers, including those of the lung and cervix, while developing countries are increasingly affected by cancers typically linked to social and economic development, like colon cancer.

Dr. Freddie Bray, head of cancer surveillance at IARC, predicted there would be 29 million cases of cancer by 2040 and 16 million deaths.

According to U.S. government data, about 1 in 20 women report using marijuana during pregnancy. Estimates for use among breastfeeding mothers vary, but a study in Colorado, where recreational marijuana is legal, put the number at almost 20 percent among women in a government supplemental food program.

The report, study and a journal editorial all said more research is needed.

Last year, a federal advisory panel said lack of scientific information about marijuana poses a public health risk.

Research has been hampered by federal government restrictions based on its view that marijuana is an illegal drug.

That has contributed to a stigma and shaded doctors’ views, said Keira Sumimoto, an Irvine, California, mother who used marijuana briefly

for medical reasons while pregnant and breastfeeding.

She said smoking a joint daily helped her gain weight when she was sick before learning she was pregnant, and eased childbirth-related pain, but that she quit because of backlash from marijuana opponents.

She said her daughter, now 8 months old, is healthy and advanced for her age.

Sumimoto runs @cannabisandmotherhood, an Instagram account that she says aims to present truthful information about marijuana so women can make their own choices.

She said she agrees with advice to be cautious, but that the academy’s stance is “is just a little too much.”

“The fear is taking over and the need and want to understand this plant is being ignored by the stigma,” Sumimoto said.

Authorities pull globe, not honey pot, from bear cub’s head Balsam Lake, Wis. (AP) - A bear cub in Wisconsin had a Winnie the Pooh moment, but it wasn’t a honey pot that got stuck on its head. It was a hard plastic globe. Authorities rescued the cub Sunday after a passer-by spotted it near Balsam Lake with the mother bear nearby. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office used a squad car to keep the mother away while authorities and two bear hunters worked on the globe as the cub was contained in a net. Sheriff’s Sgt. Brent Waak (wahk) says the thick globe resisted pliers, tin snips and pruning shears. It finally slipped off after bolt cutters were used. The sheriff’s office posted a photo of the rescue on its Facebook page.

Waak says it’s unknown where the cub got the apparently ornamental globe.

Missouri town gets new newspaper, The Uranus Examiner Uranus, Mo. (AP) - Cue the giggling: A small Missouri town has a new newspaper called The Uranus Examiner.

KYTV reports that the newspaper’s launch was announced Wednesday, just days after GateHouse Media said it was shuttering Pulaski County’s local paper, the Daily Guide.

The new publication’s editor, Natalie Sanders, led the Daily Guide before leaving in June to start what she calls a “fun” paper that will include local news and promote the tourist town of Uranus, which is pronounced the way any self-respecting class clown would say it. Uranus sits along historic Route 66 and is known for quirky attractions, including a fudge shop and the world’s largest belt buckle. Luge Hardman, the mayor of nearby Waynesville, where the Daily Guide was based, says she thinks the “innuendo” surrounding the new publication’s name will bring “public ridicule.”

Kentucky town mourns its first female mayor, Lucy Lou, a dog Rabbit Hash, Ky. (AP) - The town of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, is known for a string of highly esteemed mayors, one of whom died this week. She was 12, and a dog. The Enquirer reports Rabbit Hash’s first female mayor, Lucy Lou, died Sept. 10. The colorful political figure was a fixture in the media, with appearances on everything from Japanese television to “CBS Sunday Morning.” The collie was elected as the Ohio River town’s third canine mayor. She also served as spokesdog for a woman’s crisis center. She served from 2008 to 2016, when she voluntarily stepped down to raise funds to rebuild the historic general store ravaged by fire.

Man who walked near boiling-hot Old Faithful geyser ticketed Cheyenne, Wyo. (AP) - Yellowstone National Park officials have ticketed a man caught on video wandering close to Old Faithful geyser, where he risked burns from the boiling-hot water that erupts every hour or so. The man’s actions between eruptions startled a crowd of a couple hundred people at the park’s most famous attraction. At one point, he lay on the ground near the gurgling hole. “A bunch of the crowd thought he was going to jump. We didn’t know what was going to happen,” said Ashley Lemanski of Harbor Beach, Michigan, who shot the video Friday. The man appeared to urinate on the geyser while a park ranger repeatedly yelled at him to get to safety. Rangers caught up with him after he eventually walked back onto nearby boardwalks, Lemanski said. Rangers cited him with walking off the boardwalks in a thermal area, Yellowstone spokesman Neal Herbert said Monday. Herbert didn’t have the man’s identity. Just like Yellowstone’s wildlife and majestic scenery, tourists behaving badly have become a target for cameras. A man captured on video harassing a bison in Yellowstone in August was sentenced to over four months in jail for the incident and other drunken behavior in nearby Grand Teton National Park. If the man at Old Faithful relieved himself on the feature, he wasn’t the first. Two seasonal park workers were fired after being caught on a webcam urinating on the geyser in 2009.

Bracketing for beginners I have previously mentioned “bracketing”. Read any good photographic book and you will also read the word “bracketing”. Bracketing has saved my professional standing on more than one occasion.

First off, let’s define bracketing. This is taking the same subject three times with three different settings. Basically, more light than you imagine is needed, the correct amount of light, and finally, less light than you imagine.

With modern cameras being so good, almost intuitive if you read the publicity blurb (hint: don’t read the blurb, but do read the manual), then

why should bracketing still be necessary?

Now I do not really care how you gage the “correct” setting, whether you get it from the camera’s built-in light meter, or from a hand held light meter, or even if you used the photojournalist’s creed of f 8 and be there, the important factor is just that you do have a ‘starting point’ to work from.

I am also aware that most cameras these days do have a good metering system, taking readings from various points in the viewfinder and working out a good average, but you must remember that all the camera can do, is give you a ‘good average’. This does not mean that it is the ‘best’ exposure.

There is much in the literature too about how good digital cameras are in problematical light situations.

Surely the digital range is enough to get you out of

I think you should not travel by bus ever again, or you may find yourself crammed into the smelly toilet by a lady with an arm fetish. Likewise, get off the bar stool and go to another den of iniquity where you might not get asked to pay someone else’s bar bill, but with your gorilla arms and aquiline nosey Parker, it is going to be a tough time ahead. Is it correct that you called your daughter Ophelia?

Dear Hillary, How many of the people who write to you are genuine?

Many of them are amusing, but rather unbelievable. Just how dumb can these people be expecting that a bar girl is going to repay any money “loaned” from the unsuspecting bar fly. For one they haven’t got any money to repay the loan and even when they do get some money it is spent on a party for the other ladies in the bar. The other amazing thing is the tourist who sends money back to a bar girl whom he had as a companion for two weeks, so he sends several thousand baht each month, so she doesn’t need to work in the bar any more until next Xmas when the sucker comes over to the arms of his girlfriend who has been patiently waiting just for him (and a couple of blokes from Germany and one from Sweden). Simple answer is, No. If you are looking for a really good final image, you have to give the camera as close as you can to the ideal exposure for that picture. There are limits in how far you can go away from the ideal.

What I am preaching here is that you should always try for excellence in your photographs. Do not think that if there is not enough light, then you can fix it all with Photoshop or other fancy computer technology. You

can’t. It will end up as a trade-off between detail, brightness and contrast.

And nothing beats correct exposure in the first place.

So we return to bracketing, one of the oldest methods of getting a properly exposed photograph, and still significant in the digital age.

As stated above, you have to have a starting point, and what you have to do is to decide just what is the main element in the photograph you wish to take. Is it the person, or is it the

Even walk up close so that the main element fills the viewing screen and get your initial light meter reading exposure values. This is the starting point, so set your camera to the values indicated. Such and such f stop at so and so shutter speed. If you have metered correctly, then you will get

an image that is close to perfect. But only “close”. To get that perfect exposure, now you bracket.

The easy way is to take two more shots, one set at half a stop “under” exposed and the other at half a stop “over” exposed. Now you can do this easiest by changing the f stop (aperture) by half a stop, as most lenses have the half stop increments, while the camera has full stops with the shutter speeds.

The three shots shown here were bracketed with the half an f stop increments, as it is always very difficult to estimate bright exposures. As you can see, the one in the first is probably best, though the brightest one is also acceptable.

The dark one is throw away value only!

Next time you are trying something just a little tricky – remember to bracket the exposure!

Dear Chris, I agree with much of your sentiments, but remember that the young bloods have monthly wages coming in, while the 60+ group are trying to exist on a monthly pension, which does not go far these days. I think that calling them “sad old duffers” ignores the fact that the girls can brighten up the elderly punters lives. Most of them do know their time is limited, so they are enjoying what they’ve got left.

Dear Hillary, There are so many things for a tourist to do in Pattaya, why does any older chap just frequent the bars (of which I am told there are several thousand). Or don’t they have any sense of adventure? I’m not suggesting elephant rides but there are many places to go and explore, even the beaches south of Pattaya and islands off the coast. A BBQ on the beach is fun, and sure take a poppet with you, but just remember that she is for today. There will be another just like her tomorrow. The tourists just need to be reminded, like the warning on cigarette packets.

To celebrate Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG, there was a quiz for students and sales of chocolate bars - some of which had special golden tickets hidden inside. There was a character quiz for Primary students where they had to find clues hidden around school, and in the library GIS Principal Mrs Hawtree led a storytelling session.

Passive Income, so easy everyone should have some Passive Income… so easy everyone should have some! Or so says this Sunday’s speaker Rob Wiser. Rob spoke on the topic of: “How to Turn Your Knowledge and Life Experience into a Digital Product That Earns You Passive Profits While You Sleep.”

Rob began by giving an information-packed presentation about how anyone can begin to generate passive income on the internet with their own simple digital product. (No computer skills are necessary, nor do you need to be a writer!)

Rob Wiser answers a question from his PCEC audience as the screen displays his website address for those that may be interested in more information or wish to contact him.

This means identifying one of your interests, skills or passions and using it to create a digital product which helps people to get better at something they want to learn about, or how to solve a problem. Then, you sell this digital product online as a “course” or a “program” which customers can view immediately on their smartphones or computers.

Rob is an expert on this topic and has been creating and marketing highly successful digital products for over 10 years. He explained

it this way: “People of all ages and from all backgrounds are earning millions of dollars by selling digital products on an endless array of topics.”

Rob is a native of New York City and a graduate of New York University, where he studied film. In his 20s, he worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter and sold a number of scripts. He also had success as a journalist, writing for numerous national magazines, and as an author, publishing two books through the biggest book publishers in the United States.

However, it was when Rob discovered the power of Internet Marketing that he realized his true calling. He realized that he could create short e-books on various topics, package them as “digital products,” and offer them for sale online.

Now, rather than being paid miniscule royalties by book publishers or film producers, he was publishing directly to the internet for a global audience and keeping all of the money from his sales.

A class apart A well-known documentary film made in 1968 shows Leopold Stokowski rehearsing his orchestra and exhorting the players to “follow the conductor”, curiously referring to himself in the third person and speaking in his peculiar style of English.

Today an orchestra looks incomplete without someone standing at the front taking charge, but it wasn’t until the middle of the nineteenth century that the conductor emerged as a central figure in musical performance.

Mendelssohn was one of the first composers who conducted and later, both Berlioz and Wagner achieved fame as conductors. So did Mahler, who for a few years conducted the Vienna Philharmonic.

It takes an exceptional musician to become a decent conductor. A thorough knowledge of musical theory and history is essential as well as an understanding of harmony. Life is too short to learn every instrument in the orchestra but the conductor must have a working knowledge of each. Conductors need exceptional aural skills with a spot-on sense of intonation, rhythm and phrasing.

It takes confidence to direct a group of sixty feisty musicians. Charisma too, along with an outgoing and assertive personality. It might sound obvious, but the conductor must passionately want to conduct and enjoy the atmosphere of rehearsal and the thrill of performance.

The musical score is often regarded as almost a sacred document. As Stokowski once remarked, it’s only “black marks on white paper” but it contains the blueprint of what the composer wanted. For a conductor, a good musical memory is useful but some conductors memorize the entire score.

Bruno Walter expected conductors to know the score by heart. By the end of his career, Toscanini had evidently memorized 200 symphonies and 100 operas.

Hans von Bülow is credited with the much-quoted advice, “You must have the score in your head, not your head in the score”.

The most visible aspect of conductors is the way they use gesture. Some conductors thrash around like windmills yet others seem to barely move. Sir Adrian Boult was one of the latter.

of the music. The conductor must have a sensitive understanding of human relationships. There’s a delicate balance between controlling the orchestra and letting the musicians have artistic “space”. As Karl Böhm once said “There must always be this compromise, this balance between letting oneself go completely and maintaining control.”

So what then is the difference between a merely decent conductor and a great one? You may have your own ideas, but I think a great conductor brings something to the music which is beyond the listeners’ expectations or imagination. Great conductors are often visionaries: their depth of knowledge and understanding enables them to bring new insights into the music or create a heightened musical experience. A great conductor also seems to inspire the musicians to reach peak performance.

A few days ago I was listening to Mahler’s Third Symphony conducted by Claudio Abbado who more than anyone was a weaver of musical magic. In the last movement for example, Abbado’s musical sensitivity and profound understanding of Mahler’s timeless soundworld touches the heart with almost painful poignancy.

His performances of Mahler and Bruckner have been described as “explorations of spirituality…journeys of the soul and affirmations of humanity.

In 2010, BBC Music Magazine asked a hundred leading conductors (including Sir Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel and Mariss Jansons) to name the conductors they admired above all others. Note the careful wording. The Top Five turned out to be (1) Carlos Kleiber; (2) Leonard Bernstein; (3) Claudio Abbado; (4) Herbert von Karajan and (5) Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Four years later the BBC invited a thousand members of the British public to vote for “their favourite conductor”. On this occasion, the Top Five were (1) Sir Simon Rattle; (2) Herbert von Karajan; (3) Leonard Bernstein; (4) Sir

Recently, purely for the sake of amusement I asked a couple of dozen friends who they considered the greatest ever orchestral conductors.

The friends, who are mostly British and mostly over fifty included professional musicians, a couple of record producers, several music teachers and other knowledgeable individuals. Their Top Five were (1) Sir Colin Davis; (2) Arturo Toscanini; (3) Leonard Bernstein; (4) Otto Klemperer and (5) Herbert von Karajan. Among the runnersup in this less-than-scientific straw poll were Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Rafael Kubelík, Bernard Haitink, Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez.

Interestingly, Karajan and Bernstein appear in all three polls but even so, there seem to be some surprising omissions. Anyway, I shall leave you to draw your own conclusions, if indeed; any useful conclusions can be drawn.

However if you really want to see something of the chemistry between a “great” conductor and an orchestra, do find time to enjoy these three excellent documentaries.

Erich Kleiber. While his father was aware of his son’s musical talents, he initially dissuaded Carlos from pursuing a musical career.

“What a pity the boy is musically talented” Erich wrote to a friend. Abbado described Carlos Kleiber as “the most important conductor of the 20th century” despite the fact that Kleiber gave less than a hundred concerts in his entire lifetime.

This is a splendid documentary about the man and his music and draws heavily on footage from 1970 in which Kleiber rehearses Germany’s SüdfunkSinfonieorchester. It’s an affectionate portrait, featuring interviews with Plácido Domingo, Brigitte Fassbaender and many others.

had resigned a few months earlier after a long reign of 35 years. He’d brought the orchestra world-wide fame though at a cost, for his authoritarian, dictatorial approach was seen as increasingly old-fashioned and out of touch with democratic principles.

This is a delightful documentary and at times it’s very moving. It includes many snippets in which members of the orchestra discuss their new conductor. At the end of the film there’s a brief excerpt from the Finale of Brahms 1st Symphony and it’s as thrilling as you’re ever likely to hear.

A tiny number of conductors have so much talent that they can pretty well shortcut the years of traditional training. At the age of nineteen, Simon Rattle was made assistant conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He was twentyfive when he was hired by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. At the time it was a second-tier orchestra but during his tenure, Rattle made it world-class.

He became Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in 2002 but some years ago, decided that he would not review his contract with the orchestra after 2018. He gave his final concert with them only a few months ago on 20th June, 2018. This documentary gives a fascinating glimpse into the work of a top conductor.

Lindsey Bahr Los Angeles (AP) - Danish director Michael Noer’s “Papillon “ remake, adapted from both Henri Charriere’s autobiography and the 1973 Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman film, is a sumptuous-looking but slow-moving prison drama that at times will have you dreaming about an escape of your own.

Charlie Hunnam stars as Papillon, nicknamed for the butterfly tattoo on his chest.

He’s an expert safecracker in Paris who is framed for murder in 1931 by his underworld boss and sent off to a prison camp in French Guiana where he makes an alliance with a

fellow inmate while plotting his exit. The inmate, Louis Dega (Rami Malek), is a wealthy artist and forger who has a roll of cash hidden in a delicate place and who is too small and weak to keep it safe on his own. So “Papi” becomes his protector, with the understanding that Dega will underwrite his escape.

And goodness does Dega need protection. Malek plays him as an elitist intellectual who is convinced that he’ll be out in no time. His arrogance and inability to do anything but throw money at a situation make him an easy target. During one of his first nights in the horrifyingly crowded ship transporting them to the camp, a prisoner cuts open the stomach of the man sleeping next to him, hoping to find hidden cash.

any time (even naked in a shower) comes in handy for Dega, certainly. At almost every turn, this strategic codependence seems to actually make more problems for Papi, but he’s a man of his word and over the years develops a soft spot for Dega, who gets slightly less annoying.

It’s an incredible true story

filmed with breathtaking grace

by German cinematographer Hagen Bogdanski (“The Lives of Others”) that while violent and punishing mercifully spares the audience some of the gruesomeness, like when Dega has a bout of diarrhea and loses the money. (There is quite enough blood and gore otherwise.)

Born Karenjit Kaur Vohra to a Sikh Punjabi family, Leone, 37, made a name for herself in the porn industry before breaking into Bollywood in 2012, starring in the sequel to the hit movie “Jism,” Hindi for “body.”

A string of movies, a documentary and a Netflix biopic have garnered her huge audiences — even as critics have panned her acting abilities.

For years, Leone has been India’s most Googled entertainer. With the statue, Leone joins the pantheon of Indian celebrities — including Bollywood stars Madhubala and Katrina Kaif, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — immortalized in wax.

Leone’s rise in India has not been without controversy.

In 2011, Anurag Thakur, head of the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, now India’s ruling party, and

a member of India’s Parliament, sought to censure a TV channel that ran a realityTV show featuring Leone.

Thakur argued that an adultentertainment star’s appearance on the show would have a “negative impact on the mindset of children.”

In 2015, India’s Community Party leader Atul Kumar Anjan decried a condom ad featuring Leone as “disgusting and dirty,” and said it promoted sex and could lead to

a rise in rape cases in India.

An antagonistic interview with Bhupendra Chaubey of CNN News18 inspired a firestorm in the Indian press and on social media.

In the interview, Chaubey asked whether Leone regretted working in the porn industry, and whether she was aware that Indian housewives worried she would steal their husbands.

Chaubey said some found Leone “completely antithetical to what we perceive as the ideal of an Indian woman.”

While some viewers lambasted Chaubey for sexism, Indian author and marketing maven Suhel Seth tweeted that it was “a mirror unto us!

How many people before this interview were willing to be by her side?”

“I don’t see myself the way other people see me,” Leone said in a news conference Tuesday, adding that the statue stood for “women speaking up and women doing what they’re passionate about.”

Hunnam gives a fine performance as the unbreakable Papi, an interesting companion character to Hunnam’s Percy Fawcett from “The Lost City of Z.” But unlike the other film, the script for “Papillon” has chosen to make much of his journey, which includes long stretches in silent solitary confinement, an internal one. The story plays up the cartoonish brutality of the guards and administrators who speak only in cliches and are manically focused on breaking the prisoners, but gives us little insight into what is driving Papi to hold on to sanity and hope.

That’s not to say that the film is without some thrilling action (and a mime hallucination). But when the punishment for attempting to escape is two years in solitary confinement, and then five years on the next attempt, you can understand how these escape attempts are few and far between. For as much time as we spend with

Papillon in total isolation in silence, you come out of each stint in solitary no wiser about his motivations. The most we get to know about him as a character comes in the first few minutes, when he’s drunkenly stumbling through Paris, open champagne bottle and dancer girlfriend (Eve Hewson) in hand, rejecting her plea to leave city life and move to the country and plotting out how he’s going to be wealthy in six months.

Of course Papi’s path was ultimately quite different than what he planned, and if his story is at all intriguing to you, you might be better off sticking with the original.

“Papillon,” a Bleecker Street release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “violence including bloody images, language, nudity, and some sexual material.” Running time: 133 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

George Clooney tops Forbes’ highest-paid actors list

Los Angeles (AP) — George Clooney can raise a glass, even if he’s not starring in any hit movies.

The 57-year-old tops the 2018 Forbes’ list of highestpaid actors with $239 million in pretax earnings. Forbes credits up to $1 billion that a British conglomerate said it would pay for Casamigos Tequila, which Clooney cofounded in 2013 with two entrepreneurs. The actor’s wealth also includes additional earnings from endorsements and older movies.

The rankings include onscreen and outside earnings.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson ranked second with $124 million pretax.

Forbes says a huge social media following helped Johnson nearly double his 2017 earnings because he’s able to negotiate an extra seven figures over his standard contract for promotion.

Robert Downey Jr. was third with $81 million, followed by Chris Hemsworth with $64.5 million and Jackie Chan’s $45.5 million.

Jonathan Kelly: ‘Twice Around The Houses’

mott@pattayamail.com Irish singer-songwriter Jonathan Kelly’s second album “Twice around the Houses” was released on the RCA label in 1972 and was given masses of quality marketing, while Kelly played prestige gigs at all the top venues. He was a regular at major festivals (playing with just a miked up acoustic and was always easy to whip on and off between longer ensembles). Kelly always went down a storm wherever he played but somehow it just didn’t happen for him.

This album under review starts off with the sublime “Madeleine”, a mid-tempo song about un-requited love.

The feeling expressed by Kelly’s voice leaves you in no doubt that this is a song of personal experience and would have made

Jonathan Kelly.

an excellent single, but, alas, time has moved on.

Next out of the traps is “Sligo Fair”, a lovely song about life in the British countryside.

(Life is not always greener on the other side). Following this is “We’re All Right Till Then”, one of the most poignant protest songs this dog has ever heard. To lighten the load we then have the glorious “Ballad Of Cursed Anna”, always a concert favorite with audiences, telling the story of the folly of youth. It’s a tragi-comedy of a song that always plucks a heartstring but still leaves a smile on the lips.

Every track on the album is well constructed and the variety is quite remarkable.

From acoustic sad ballads like “I Used To Know You” to the fun filled rock ‘n’ roll of “The Train Song”, which contains my favorite lyrics: “The backdoor daughter to a friend of my aunt, Came to see me with a present of a geranium plant, I wish she’d have told me not to teach it to talk Cause today it asked me if I would take it for a walk”.

I mean, c’mon, when was the last time you heard a song with a geranium in it?

Just one listen to this album will blow away all your blues. At any rate it is doubly worth picking up as it has been re-mastered and rereleased on B.G.O. records as a two for one set with Kelly’s second album “Wait till they change the Backdrop”.

Like any good story there is a certain sadness to this musician’s career, but also in a way a happy ending too.

The sadness is that at some point Kelly became disillusioned with the whole business, so he cut and ran. He had to do it for himself. How long can you live with high praise from the media, but a stark lack of sales?

Kelly never had a “Year Of The Cat” a “Streets Of London” or even a “Baker Street” to lift him - like his contemporaries - on to a higher more commercial plane of international stardom. It’s great being an underground cult hero, but you still have to eat.

So Kelly packed his family up, retired from the music industry and moved to Wales.

But now through the courtesy of B.G.O. we can listen to his wonderful work. Do yourself a favour, next time you want to spruce up your music collection, get this album, you won’t regret it.

Your joy begins as soon as the disc starts spinning.

I wish Jonathan Kelly and his family all the joy in their life in Wales and thanks for the memories.

Lost Jagger-Simon duet found after more than 45 years

Chris Lehourites London (AP) — A lost Mick Jagger duet with Carly Simon has been found more than 45 years after it was first recorded.

The song, apparently never heard in public, appears to have been recorded in 1972 and was found recently on a tape owned by Rolling Stones collector Matt Lee. Believed to be named “Fragile,” at least according to Rolling Stones fan websites, the song is a slow love ballad that has Jagger and Simon seemingly sitting together at a piano and singing.

Simon spoke about the lost duet in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine about two years ago, saying the tape of the recording had been lost for decades.

“We had this little back and forth at the piano for about an hour,” Simon says in the Rolling Stone interview, published Nov. 29, 2016, according to the magazine’s website.

She also sang a line of the song from memory, “Funny, funny, funny, funny, funny, How love can make you cry.”

That matches with Lee’s recording, except Jagger and Simon appear to sing “change” instead of “cry.”

Jagger does most of the singing, with Simon adding some harmonies.

When the song ends, a female voice believed to be Simon’s gasps: “Good song.”

Simon and Jagger worked together in 1972 when the Rolling Stones frontman supposedly sang backup vocals on Simon’s hit “You’re So Vain.” For many years, it was thought that Jagger was the subject of that song, but Simon has denied that.

Lee, an entrepreneur from London, declined to say where the tape of the song came from. But he said that he sent a digital copy of the

song to Rolling Stone magazine because they promised to give it to Simon.

“I’m not doing it for the money,” Lee said. “I’m a collector. My motive for sending it to Rolling Stone was to pass it to Carly.”

Representatives from the Rolling Stones did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While the song will be new to most listeners, it is not completely unknown to hardcore Stones fans. But it’s not exactly easy to find, either.

A snippet of the song, with its passage of Jagger repeatedly singing, “It’s funny, funny, funny,” is briefly heard in a scene in the publicly unreleased documentary about the 1972 Rolling Stones tour of America. The name of the film is obscene in itself, stemming from the obscene name of an obscene song the band recorded a few years earlier to fulfill a recording contract they didn’t want to actually fulfill.

In cleaner terms, and as a hint to the name of the tour movie, that song is often referred to as “Schoolboy Blues.”

The new finding comes two years after another previously unheard Rolling Stones song was uncovered. That song, “No One

Loves You More Than Me,” is believed to have been recorded in 1964 and was found in 2016. The tape of that song was reportedly sold at auction.

The Rolling Stones, who

wrapped up a tour of Britain and Europe in July, have said they are working on a new studio album. A short video clip of Jagger playing a guitar was posted on his Instagram account last month.

Mystery around disappearance of Chinese star Fan Bingbing Christopher Bodeen Beijing (AP) - X-Men star Fan Bingbing’s Beijing management office is dark and abandoned. Her birthday passed almost unremarked in China’s hyper-adrenalized social media environment.

For one of China’s best known stars and a rising Hollywood actress, Fan’s vanishing is stunning, coming amid vague allegations of tax fraud and possibly other infractions that could have put her at odds with Chinese authorities.

Fan has starred in dozens of movies and TV series in China and is best known internationally for her role as Blink in 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” a cameo in the Chinese version of “Iron Man 3,” and star turns on the red carpet at Cannes as recently as May. She was booked to star with Penelope Cruz in the Hollywood film “355” and has a role in the upcoming Bruce Willis-Adrien Brody feature “Air Strike.”

Yet for nearly three months, Fan hasn’t been seen or heard from in public in any verifiable way.

One of China’s wealthiest entertainers, Fan pulled down tens of millions of dollars for her roles, along with handsome sums in appearance fees and product endorsements. Some of those contracts may have landed her in hot water with the authorities.

Fan’s name has been mentioned in reports about a reportedly common entertainment industry practice - an actor having a public contract stating an official salary and a private contract detailing the true, much higher payday. A talk show host, Cui Yongyuan had said in May that Fan had such an arrangement - which allegedly helps facilitate tax evasion and revealed details that

sparked a public outcry.

Cui later apologized.

At Fan’s management office in Beijing’s Dongcheng district, doors are locked, the lights are out and a calendar hanging alongside posters advertising Fan’s film appearances is still turned to July. A worker at an office across the hall said she couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen anyone enter the company premises.

from the past when her birthday celebrations were lavish, well-attended affairs, marked last year by a public marriage proposal from boyfriend Li Chen.

An automatic birthday greeting on her once-active account on Weibo, China’s main microblogging service, was apparently deleted by persons unknown.

Shi Shusi, a columnist and commentator on Chinese popular culture, suggests Fan’s high profile was her undoing, having made her a target for officials wishing to set an example for wouldbe tax cheats amid China’s slowing economy.

“Such a famous actress and no one knows her whereabouts. And no authorities have made any clarifications.

This is the real suspense,” Shi said.

Fan’s disappearance even brought a message of concern from Hu Xijin, editor of the Global Times tabloid known for its hard-line proCommunist Party nationalist opinions.

“A timely clarification and public notification of Fan Bingbing’s status would also be beneficial to setting the record straight internationally,” Hu wrote on his Weibo account on Sept. 15.

Back in June, Fan’s production company denied Fan had ever a signed a “yinyang” contract, so named because

of its dual natures. Fan, her production company and her agent could not be reached for more recent comment.

Police rarely acknowledge such investigations are taking place until a conclusion has been reached.

Her disappearance had come as Chinese authorities seek to rein in high salaries for actors that can eat up much of the cost of a production. In June, regulators capped star pay at 40 percent of a TV show’s entire production budget and 70 percent of the total paid to all the actors in a film.

Chinese celebrities incur a “huge political risk,” he said.

Known as a classical Chinese beauty with almond eyes and porcelain skin, Fan, 36, usually maintains a prominent presence on Weibo, where she has more than 62 million followers. Her account has been largely dormant for weeks, however, with a July 26 “like” about a posting on her charitable foundation being the last activity prior to the deletion of her birthday notice.

Photos on social media also appear to show her visiting a pediatric cardiac ward at a Shanghai hospital for a charity event on July 1.

The strongest clue to Fan’s status may have been a Sept.

6 notice posted on the website of the Securities Daily, a newspaper published by the official Economic Daily. It stated that the local tax bureau had sent a notice to Fan’s studio that she had been “placed under control” - a legal term for being held under investigation. The article was later deleted from the website.

Fan’s disappearance has already taken a toll on her lucrative sideline as brand ambassador, throwing those companies’ plans into disarray. Australian vitamin brand Swisse issued a statement

Though China has become the world’s second-largest film market, authorities keep tight control on local productions, exercising final say over choice of cast, director and script. If Fan had stepped on official toes, it would be a simple task to retaliate by destroying her career, with Chinese authorities wielding broad powers to detain, interrogate and accuse citizens out of the public eye.

Other celebrities have run afoul of authorities over drug use, excessive pay or tax issues, said Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group based in Shanghai.

“Then the government really cracks down hard and pretty much destroys their careers for several years if not forever,” Rein said. Companies that bet big on a-list

saying it was suspending use of her image and “continuing to monitor the situation and hope that it is resolved in the near future.”

British diamond giant De Beers, who signed with Fang just last year, appears to have already moved on: Another actress, Gao Yuanyuan, represented the company at a store opening last month in the ancient capital of Xi’an. Other firms she endorsed, from dutyfree chain King Power to Louis Vuitton and Montblanc are also taking action.”

“There’s a lot more risk for celebrities in China than in the United States, because the government takes much more of a moral crackdown,” said China Market Research’s Rein.

“So there’s a greater risk for celebrities to get in trouble with the law and never be able to get a chance at redemption.”

Smith turns up the heat PSC Golf Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, Sept. 17, Bangpakong – Stableford 1st Paul Smith (4) 42pts 2nd Chris Barker (13) 40pts 3rd Colin Service (17) 38pts 4th Budsarawan Phinpam (18) 38pts 5th Steve Truelove (7) 37pts On Monday, the society travelled to Bangpakong Riverside to play a stableford competition in perfect weather.

There was no sign of the recent rain and the day was spent under scattered light clouds with the ever present cooling breeze on the banks of the Bangpakong River.

The course was in good condition but recent soakings had put a restriction on golf carts as fairways were a little soft, so the preferred lies rule was invoked on the fairways. Greens were fine except for the fourth and fifth which were very soft, indeed the fifth was sanded in an effort to dry it out. Otherwise - perfect.

With 22 golfers only one flight contested the day and the expected good scores were achieved. In fifth place was Steve Truelove with 37

points, then a countback separating the fourth and third places as lady golfer Budsarawan Phinpam with 38 points lost out to Colin Service by virtue of his better back nine.

An excellent round of forty points gave Chris Barker second place only as Paul Smith was on fire. Recording 21 points on both nines he easily took the day with some powerful golf which gave him a best gross of 70. Wow! This really was impressive on a course where “run” was limited over the 6683 yards from the white tees.

The best front nine consolation went to Sam Scarfo (20 points) with Wayne Peppernell taking the best back nine with 19 points.

Near pins were won by Maurice Roberts (4), Paul Smith (7), Jim Norkett (13) and Chris Barker (16)

Friday, Sept. 21, Greenwood Stableford

Burapha on Wednesday to play a stableford competition on the C and D nines. The course was in reasonably good condition - fairways were soft and the rough, which is a problem on the best of days, has now thickened with the recent wet weather. Throw into the mix the usual hazards and long par fours and there is a golf course waiting to be challenged.

A field of twenty played in one flight. With one exception scores were moderate with Pete Seil making fourth place with 35 points, shunted

out of third by Maurice Roberts’ better back nine.

In second was Dave Arataki making a welcome return after a few weeks absence and his 38 points again indicated how his game is improving since his move to Pattaya about a year ago.

The winner was Tommy Marshall who called all the shots this day with an excellent 41 points (gross 73) to win handsomely. All on his birthday too!

Near pins went to Petur Petursen (C5), Barry Oats (C8), Darren Beavers (D2) and Paul Smith (D8).

Following the rain the evening before the course was soft and spongy in places, especially just short of the greens, which were surprisingly hard, especially on the A nine. Lift and place was invoked as a result.

A field of twenty-six golfers made it to the tee and all got away in good time. The lack of any breeze and run made the course play long and the extreme heat on a very still day caught many golfers out and their rounds wilted early.

As usual at Greenwood the low markers tend have their day with the long par threes and some of the longer par fours. Today was no exception. The two flights were cut at fifteen.

In the second flight Garry Hookey managed third place with 32 points, ahead of second placed Derek Phillips with 34 points and Wayne Peppernell took the win with 35 points.

The top flight saw Wednesday’s winner Tommy Marshall make it a double with another fine round of 38 points. A plethora of golfers on 37 points suffered count back to decide the minor placings and it resulted in Kevin Rogers taking second and Pete Seil making third.

Consolation prizes went to Chris Barker for his front nine of 19 points and Maurice Roberts for his back nine of 16.

Near pins went to the long hitters, as expected, leaving Tommy Marshall (A2), Paul Smith (A6), Pete Seil (C3) and Takeshi Hakozaki (C6) all with the “wherewithall” for a celebratory beer.

Although as usual we gave the group in front of us a head start of over thirty minutes, we caught up with them on the ninth where they were playing as a five-ball. I think the Marshall spoke to them and then they split up to two and three-balls and after that they went round very quickly so we all got finished in a sub three and a half hour round.

Again no rain today and the course was in very good condition except for a few of the greens, especially the tenth which has a few very bad spots on it and needs attention. Donal McGuigan

won the medal last week and he was the winner again today, this time with a very good thirty eight points. We then had three players a full five points behind Donal and on the count back Russell Gilroy came second, Craig Hitchens was third and Joe McArdle got the fourth and last place.

We had no ‘2’s today so a good carryover to next week.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, Treasure Hill Stableford It had been a few months since we last played at Treasure Hill and most were looking forward to try and tame what is a very hard but fair course. The car park was nearly empty on arrival and we were able to get away about 1/2 hour early. With no one in sight it was a fast 3.30 hour round.

I t was a very hot and humid day and a bit uncomfortable for playing. The heat obviously didn’t affect Russell Gilroy as he came out a clear winner with thirty seven points, a score which would have been better if he hadn’t picked up what was a tap in putt for a point on a par-five when he mistakenly thought he was playing a par four.

Our next best scores were thirty three points and here Lyle Blaw, who was playing his last game for this trip, came second on the count back and also to make sure he went home with even more money he also had the only ‘2’ of the day. Pete Seil lost the count back to come third.

With several of the regulars off to Hua Hin and a few others out of country, it was a small but eager group meeting at BJ Holiday Lodge for our monthly visit to Greenwood. It is an easy drive now and arriving under cloudy but dry skies all were anxious to test the challenges of the “A” & “C” nines once again.

Word is that the “B” nine will reopen in November.

With the reduced number of players, all within a few strokes on Handicap Index it was decided to just play off HI this day instead of CH as the group usually does.

So off C-1 we went playing “Ball in Hand” as even with carts allowed on the fair-

Two buses and a couple of cars ferried today’s golfers to this lovely course. The trip itself was uneventful other than dodging the craters on the road leading from the highway to the course proper.

Plenty of overnight rain left punters worried that carts would not be allowed on the course but despite a heavy ground, they were. Thus playing conditions were in our favor!

We played from the white tees and this made for a longer second shot as there was very little run to be obtained.

Dave Neal and his pretty partner Yarnni returned from a trip to Vietnam and were a bit tired from there excursion. This didn’t seem to faze Dave who was that relaxed that he played the best golf

forecast it was lift, clean and place through the green, as seems to be the norm of late.

The course was in great condition, excellent grass under the ball in the fairways and greens running at a reasonable pace and true. With the course not crowded our groups played at a pace that suited them and, round over, all enjoyed the complimentary drink in the restaurant overlooking the course while the scorecards were sorted.

With the small numbers it was direct to the presentation at the course this day.

The tour was organised by Mashi Kaneta and Tom Harrington and our thanks go to both for doing such a sterling job.

The first venue was Majestic Creek, a fine course but probably the lesser of the courses we played. From the outset, it was decided not to use pick, clean, and place and with hindsight, it was probably not the right decision as often the ball plugged and had mud on it. This did not affect the scores which on the whole were very good.

Geoff Parker was first out of the blocks with a stylish thirty-nine points Second went to Jimmy Carr on thirty-seven and Geoff Cox took third with thirty-six. The near pin went to Geoff Cox whilst the longest putt went to Alan Sullivan. Not to be left out Tropical took the best front and back nines going to Tom Herrington and John Pierrel respectively.

Thursday, Sept. 20, Burapha - Stableford You start to crow about the numbers that you are getting then out of the blue this happens. We were heading to, what I believe, the best course that we play but only with a handful of golfers. Maybe the punters are telling us something, this being a course that we can only play 3 months of the year as the price for the

other 9 months is outrageously expensive.

As per usual the course was in great nick, we have grown accustomed to this it is one of the premier courses in the region! We could only play the one flight but we did include all the novelties. We attacked the course from the white tees and played 9’s C & D in that order!

Rudy Regenass (H/cap 15) held sway on the day and won with 37 points. Near pin prizes went to Denis Steele (2) and Dave Neal while the long putt award was bagged

As has now seemingly become the routine at Pattana, and for the second time this week on top of that, the top step of the podium was claimed by Don Carmody (c/ h 28) with 36 points. Coming here once a month, this is Don’s third win in a row at this long and challenging course! Will have to see if he can continue his streak as the venue is already on the schedule for next month.

Joining Don on the podium were Bob Britton (13), 35 points and Graham Buckingham (23), 33 points.

For the second day in a row, Tom Herrington had the best front nine, with Geoff Parker taking the back nine.

Thursday, Sept. 20, Springfield A & C – Stableford 1st Alan Sullivan 33pts 2nd John Pierrel 31pts 3rd Tom Herrington 30pts Our third round was played at the Springfield course on the A & C nines. The course was in excellent condition with no need for pick, clean and place today. Despite that scores were lower today than the previous two days. We got rained on for the first time

Alan Sullivan took first place with a low score of thirty-three points, John Pierrel was second with thirty-one and Tom Herrington brought up the rear with thirty points. Alan Sullivan took the nearest to the pin and Jimmy Carr with the broomstick took the longest putt. Frank Xin had the best front nine and the ever consistent Geoff Parker the back nine.

Friday, Sept. 21, Black Mountain – Stableford 1st Geoff Parker 40pts 2nd Geoff Cox 38pts 3rd John Pierrel 36pts As with all well-organised events the best was saved till last, in this case Black Mountain. Many claim this is the best course in Thailand, a claim with which it is hard to argue. The course was in pristine condition, so well manicured and presented there was nothing out of place. Due to extremely heavy overnight rain, it was decided to use pick, clean and place for todays round.

The quality of the course was reflected in the scores with Geoff Parker, who had a very good week, taking first place with forty points. Geoff Cox also played excellent golf to take second place with John Pierrel in third. Michael Brett got nearest the pin and John Pierrel the longest putt.

A number of prizes were donated so there was an extra prize for the top three pairs. Not surprisingly Geoff Parker and Frank Xin took first place, Geoff Cox and Michae Brett second and Mashi and Tom Herrington third.

Not a great week for Les Hall who suffered from a back ailment which no doubt played a big part in him winning the lowest Stableford total for the week

Undaunted by the difficulties of the Pattana layout, Julian successfully negotiated the

course and scored an impressive 37 points to take the day’s honours.

Steve Douglas Vilamoura, Portugal (AP) - After 46 years, the European Tour finally has its first round of 59.

English golfer Oliver Fisher was sprayed with champagne beside the 18th green after two-putting for par from 40 feet to complete a 12-under round containing an eagle and 10 birdies on a par71 course at the Portugal Masters last week.

It was the first sub-60 round on the European Tour.

There have officially been 10 on the U.S. PGA Tour, with one of them a 58 by Jim Furyk in 2016 at the Travelers Championship.

“I obviously knew I was in with a shout of shooting a low one when I made a good start,” said Fisher, who reached the turn in 28 after five birdies and an eagle at the par-5 fifth hole at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura.

Wednesday we made the trip to Greenwood, where for the third week running we were the only society on the course and as a consequence we were treated to millionaire’s golf. It’s clear that some courses are suffering with numbers but for the condition and value for money that Greenwood offers I’m amazed that more societies choose not to include it in their schedule.

With John Goudge having set the precedent yesterday, it was another Wanneroo boy Klaus Fast, who stepped up to the plate and shot a one over of the stick to post 38 points and claim the day’s top prize.

Thursday, Sept. 20, Phoenix Gold – Stableford 1st Julian Thomas (20) 41pts 2nd John Brewer (16) 38pts 3rd Garry Barker (3) 38pts Phoenix course was playing host to the TRGG members on Thursday. Julian Thomas, who since the commencement of the Hua Hin tour had been playing second fiddle to the “Big Guns” such as Colin Smith, John Goudge and Klaus Fast, finally decided enough was enough and came out with all guns a blazing to shoot the best score of the week with a magnificent 41 points. The honours board eagerly awaits the day where Julian’s name will take pride of place.

Shigeki Toyoshima has been honing his skills since joining the TRGG in 2009. If there was an award for the most improved and consistent golfer then it would have Toyo’s name all over it.

Saturday, Sept. 22, Parichat – Stableford 1st Tauchi Hiraoki (13) 40pts 2nd John Brewer (15) 36pts 3rd Klaus Fast (3) 34pts We finished this week’s rounds of golf at Parichat, it’s not everybody’s favourite course but it’s one that requires a lot of course management to have any chance of posting a decent score.

Hiraoki Tauchi certainly did that today with sixteen points on the front nine and an incredible twenty four points on the back nine he blitzed the rest of the field with 40 points and his first TRGG win.

Just off the fairways the semi-rough was very difficult to get out of and the greens were still in good condition but a lot slower than normal here.

Thirty points was the best score of the day with Vern Raaschau, playing off 13, winning division 1 on that total. Three 29’s came in for second place and with a 14/ 14/13 back nine countback Ian Speirs beat Nik Evans on a 11/10 back six countback while Paul Young lost out.

John Carlin with 29 points won division 2 with Willy Van Heetvelde in second place on 26 and wait for it, a meager 20 points came in third with Frank Grainger beating Paul Butler on a 13/7 countback.

Near pins went to (Div 1) Nik Evans (2), Soren Nielsen and Vern Raaschau, and (Div 2) Peter Davies and Paul Young.

With three rollovers in division 1, Nik Evans birdied the second to record the only ‘2’ of the day.

Wednesday, Sept. 19, Plutaluang Stableford Only one division out today with Paul Young coming in with 35 points to take the win. John Carlin placed second on 33, Bob Poole was third with 32 and with a 10/7 countback on the back six holes, Colin Aspinall beat Frank Grainger for fourth after they both came in with 30 points.

Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Bob Poole (2), and

(Div 2) Colin Aspinall, Peter Davies and Frank Grainger (2).

There were a few comments after the round comparing the greens here to Bangpra on Monday. Six weeks ago the greens here were very slow and at Bangpra very slick but totally reversed this week.

Friday, Sept. 21, Eastern Star Stableford Intermittent rain on the way to the course today but no problem at the course and we

teed off with two divisions out and the equal cut set at 9-16.6 and 16.9+.

An even par 36 points was the best score of the day, with Steve Harris winning division 2 on that score. John Carling was second one point behind and Paul Butler took third with 33.

Very low scores in division 1 with the Durham boy John Hughes taking podium position with 28 points while Pete Sumner lost out to Vern Raaschau for the silver spot on a 15/10 back nine countback after they both came in with 27 points.

After coming third in division 1 Pete Sumner got nearest the pin on the 3rd, 13th and 17th with John Hughes on the 6th and in division 2 Paul Butler, Glyn Evans and Steve Harris took the honours.

Almost two months now with no ‘2’s in division 1 but Steve Harris birdied the 17th in division 2.

It wasn’t that wet but they have had a good deal of rain in recent afternoons which made for soft fairways and muddy balls. The day was glorious for golf although a bit hot but everyone managed to get around.

Monday, Sept. 17, Phoenix Golf Stableford With just three groups playing today we were away a little earlier than usual for a leisurely 4-hour round of golf on arguable one of the most picturesque courses in this area. We played Mountain and Ocean loops and they are in spectacular condition at the moment, with greens that will hold and were great to putt on.

Joshua stops Povetkin in 7th round, keeps heavyweight titles Steve Douglas London (AP) — With blood streaming out of his busted nose, Anthony Joshua was in deep trouble once more in front of 80,000 stunned spectators at Wembley Stadium.

Alexander Povetkin, a 39year-old Russian with supposedly his best days behind him, was dominating heavyweight boxing’s new superstar with his powerful inside work and punching power.

Like 17 months ago when he was knocked down by Wladimir Klitschko in the same venue, Joshua was looking vulnerable. And just like that career-defining night, he came through.

Joshua slowly picked off a tiring Povetkin and delivered a brutal finish in the seventh round to retain his WBA, IBF, and WBO belt last Saturday.

“A few years ago,” Joshua said, “maybe I wouldn’t have won that fight.”

The end was emphatic, and trademark Joshua. A left hook left Povetkin open and Joshua followed through with a straight right that sent the challenger to the canvas.

Povetkin had his head through the ropes at one point but he managed to get to his feet, only for Joshua to pile in with a flurry of punches that caused the referee to step in and stop the fight with 1:01 left in the round.

Marquez wins Aragon MotoGP as Lorenzo crashes out on 1st lap Alcaniz, Spain (AP) — Marc Marquez won the Aragon Grand Prix to extend his overall lead of the MotoGP championship to 72 points last Sunday, after pole-sitter Jorge Lorenzo crashed on the opening lap.

Lorenzo flew off his Ducati on the race’s first turn and was stretchered off the track and taken to the MotorLand Circuit’s medical center, where medical staff determined he had a dislocated toe on his right foot.

Lorenzo lashed out at Marquez, who he will join at Honda next season, after the race.

“Marc’s move meant that I couldn’t take the curve and I had to go off the driving line and I lost control,” Lorenzo said. “I just hope that he comes to say sorry and ask how I am, and above all, that he won’t do it again.”

Marquez, who started from third on the grid, traded the lead with Andrea Dovizioso until finally taking charge for good on Lap 21.

Marquez finished ahead of Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone to claim the race for a third consecutive year.

It was Marquez’s first win in five races.

“I had been taking risks in races but it wasn’t enough to win,” Marquez said. “This time I

Using his long reach and fighting on the back foot, Joshua came back into the fight and Povetkin was looking for the big punch for the knockout.

Povetkin sustained a bad cut over his left eye in round four and was noticeably slowing up by the end of round five. He had no answer to Joshua’s barrage of punches in the seventh that set up the crowd-pleasing finish.

Tiger Woods wins Tour Championship for 80th PGA Tour title Doug Ferguson Atlanta (AP) — Tiger Woods, in his Sunday red shirt, both arms raised in victory on the 18th green.

For so many years, the scene was familiar.

This time, it was surreal.

“I can’t believe I pulled this off,” Woods said last Sunday during the trophy presentation at the Tour Championship, where he gave thousands of delirious fans at East Lake, and millions more around the world, what they wanted to see, and what they thought they might never see again.

And at that moment, Woods was overcome with emotion and paused.

After two back surgeries six weeks apart, he couldn’t lie down, sit or walk without pain. Golf was the least of his concerns, so much that he once said anything else he achieved would be “gravy.”

One year ago, while recovering from a fourth back surgery, he still had no idea if he could come back to the highest level of golf.

“Just to be able to compete and play again this year, that’s a hell of a comeback,” he said.

Woods delivered the perfect ending to his amazing return from back surgeries with a performance out of the past. He left the competition feeling hopeless as he built a five-shot lead early and then hung on for a 1-over 71 and a two-shot victory over Billy Horschel.

The sky’s the limit?

Russian GP this weekend After the boring race in Singapore, around the houses, now we come to Sochi in Russia, for yet another round the house style of event.

The 5.848 kilometer circuit is the fourth-longest circuit on the Formula One calendar, behind Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan and Silverstone in the UK. The circuit is built around the Sochi Olympic Park, the coastal cluster of Olympic venues built for the 2014 Winter Olympics that have hosted competitions in ice hockey, speed skating, curling, figure skating, short track etc., and Fisht Olympic Stadium where Opening and Closing ceremonies were held. The surface was not laid until after the Closing Ceremony of the Olympics.

With Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) stretching his lead over Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) in the World Drivers Championship, it will need something close to a miracle for Vettel to haul the 40 point advantage back, but

it has happened before, but it is doubtful looking at the way the Ferrari driver is buckling under the strain.

There are six Grands Prix to go, including Russia. That is a possible 150 points.

The circuit, designed by German architect Hermann Tilke, has the start grid on the northern edge of the Olympic Park next to the railway station, heading southwest towards the Black Sea coast. Then it runs along the outer edge of the central Sochi Medals

New Japanese BMW – or was that a German Toyota The new Toyota Supra is one of the products of a 2012 deal between Toyota and BMW to develop a pair of sports car twins. By using the same basic set of parts, this joint effort would give BMW a replacement for its Z4, out of production since 2016 and provide a coupe to refresh the Supra name. Both will be made in a factory in Graz, Austria.

Toyota’s Masayuki Kai, Supra assistant chief engineer said. “Without BMW we could not revive the Supra, and this also applies vice-versa for BMW.” The new Toyota Supra is mechanically identical to the BMW Z4. “BMW’s straight six engine … very, very nice engine,” Kai adds.

Supra production doesn’t begin until the first quarter of next year and it is scheduled to go on sale in the second half of 2019.

The car will be the first road car to wear GR (for Gazoo Racing) branding. This Toyota sub-brand is tasked with coordinating all kinds of racing, where the Gazoo Racing name is already well known, plus creating road cars like the new Supra. The objective is to make GR to Toyota what AMG is to Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Toyota has not revealed any official performance figures for its new Supra, but

expect 220 kW and 450 Nm and return zero to 100 km/h in well under five seconds.

Toyota’s engineers claim the Supra’s body structure is as stiff as the carbon fiber Lexus LF-A and that its center of gravity is lower than the current GT86 sports car, and that its front:rear weight distribution is a BMW-like 50:50.

The Supra interior features a lot of BMW parts.

Some will find the idea of a Toyota-BMW collaboration hard to swallow. Diehard Supra enthusiasts may sneer at the new model and delight in calling attention to visible signs of its mixed heritage.

But although the new Supra is no purebred, driving pleasure is what it delivers.

And that’s what really makes or breaks a sports coupe, no matter what badge it wears.

The new Supra is a twoseater, breaking from tradition. Every one of the four previous generations, from 1978 to 2002, featured a 2+2

passenger arrangement. There are two reasons for the change.

First, Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada wanted a compact footprint for excellent agility, so the distance between the car’s front and rear axles is shorter than all the old models. Second, Toyota already makes a sporty 2+2 coupe, the GT86 (which is cloned with the Subaru GRZ).

This type of cooperation seems to be the way of the automotive world – Mazda and Fiat with the MX-5, Toyota and BMW’s Supra and Toyota and Subaru with the GT 86. I can’t say I like it.

Tokyo (AP) - Electric drones booked through smartphones pick people up from office rooftops, shortening travel time by hours, reducing the need for parking and clearing smog from the air.

This vision of the future is driving the Japanese government’s “flying car” project. Major carrier All Nippon Airways, electronics company NEC Corp. and more than a dozen other companies and academic experts hope to have a road map for the plan ready by the year’s end.

“This is such a totally new sector Japan has a good chance for not falling behind,” said Fumiaki Ebihara, the government official in charge of the project.

For now, nobody believes people are going to be zipping around in flying cars any time soon. Many hurdles remain, such as battery life, the need for regulations and of course safety concerns. But dozens such projects are popping up around the world.

A flying car is defined as aircraft that’s electric, or hybrid electric, with driverless capabilities, that can land and takeoff vertically, according to Ebihara.

They are often called EVtol, which stands for “electric vertical takeoff and landing” aircraft. All the flying car concepts, which are like drones big enough to hold humans, promise to be better than helicopters, which are expensive to maintain, noisy to fly and require trained pilots, Ebihara and other proponents say.

Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. said they had nothing to say about flying cars, but Toyota Motor Corp. recently invested USD 500 million in working with Uber on self-driving technology for the ride-hailing service. Toyota group companies have also invested 42.5 million yen ($375,000) in a Japanese startup, Cartivator, that is working on a flying car.

The hope is to fly up and light the torch at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but it’s unclear it will meet that goal:

at a demonstration last year the device crashed after it rose to slightly higher than eye level. A video of a more recent demonstration suggests it’s now flying more stably, though it’s being tested indoors, unmanned and chained so it won’t fly away.

Though the Japanese government has resisted Uber’s efforts to offer ride-hailing services in Japan, limiting it to partnerships with taxi companies, it has eagerly embraced the U.S. company’s work on EVtol machines.

Uber says it is considering Tokyo as its first launch city for affordable flights via its UberAir service. It says Los Angeles and Dallas, Texas, and locations in Australia, Brazil, France and India are other possible locations for its services.

Unlike regular airplanes, with their aerodynamic design and two wings, Uber’s “Elevate” structures look like small jets with several propellers on top. The company says it plans flight demonstrations as soon as 2020 and a commercial service by 2023.

Unmanned drones are legal in Japan, the U.S. and other countries, but there are restrictions on where they can be flown and requirements for getting approval in advance. In Japan, drone flyers can be licensed if they take classes. There is no requirement like drivers licenses for cars.

Concepts for flying cars vary greatly. Some resemble vehicles with several propellers on top while others look

more like a boat with a seat over the propellers.

Ebihara, the flying-car chief at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, says Japan is on board for “Blade Runner” style travel — despite its plentiful, efficient and well developed public transportation.

Japan’s auto and electronics industries have the technology and ability to produce super-light materials that could give the nation an edge in the flying car business, he said. Such vehicles could be tested first in uncongested, remote areas or between islands, where public transport is less accessible and safety issues would be less of a problem.

Just as the automobile vanquished horse-drawn carriages, moving short-distance transport into the air could in theory bring a sea change in how people live, Ebihara said, pointing to the sky outside the ministry building to stress how empty it was compared to the streets below.

Atsushi Taguchi, a “drone grapher,” as specialists in drone video are called, expects test flights can be carried out even if flying cars won’t become a reality for years since the basic technology for stable flying already exists with recent advances in sensors, robotics and digital cameras.

“I think one of the biggest hurdles is safety,” said Taguchi. “And anything that flies will by definition crash.”

(And don’t forget the basic truth in Pattaya: If it flies, floats or fornicates, rent it!)

Stuvik secures double points finishes in Shanghai

The fifth round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the Shanghai International Circuit last weekend, an arena which also hosts the F1 Grand Prix.

Pattaya based driver Sandy Stuvik took pole position in the damp conditions last year, so the Thai driver was excited to see what he could do at the beautiful Chinese circuit.

Teammate Shae Davies took to the circuit for Qualifying 1, where he secured 11th position but his lap time was deleted due to track limit infringements. This demoted the Aussie-Thai duo to 22nd on the grid for Race 1.

After a stellar start to Race 1, Davies fought hard and brought the #911 Porsche GT3 R up to 9th position. At that point the Thai driver took over and after a consistent stint Stuvik brought the car to the finish in 9th position.

Stuvik went out for Qualifying 2 and managed to secure 14th position in the competitive field. A setup change during the qualifying session was made to boost the Thai driver’s performance, but no gain was found.

Thailand’s Kiradech aims for strong debut season on PGA Tour Kiradech Aphibarnrat is looking forward to a memorable debut season as a PGA Tour member after making history by becoming the first Thai golfer to earn playing rights on the world’s leading professional golf circuit.

The 29-year-old earned his PGA Tour card for the 20182019 new season through the non-member category, thanks to a pair of top-five finishes at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship and WGCDell Technologies Match Play in addition to noteworthy performances including a T13 at the Memorial Tournament, T30 at The Players Championship and 15th at the U.S Open.

Kiradech entered the 201718 PGA Tour season ranked 147th in the Official World Golf Ranking and is presently No. 38.

The popular Thai officially received his 2018-19 PGATour card from Todd Rhinehart, Vice President and Executive Director, PGATour in Bangkok last week. Rhinehart also announced that Kiradech will receive a sponsor’s exemption to compete in the CIMB Classic, which is the second tournament of the new 2018-19 PGA Tour Season, at TPC Kuala Lumpur from October 11 to 14.

A Spicy Scramble Scrambled eggs are very usual breakfast items, but the standard recipe can dish up a fairly bland start to the morning. This recipe will, however, certainly ‘spice up’ the simple egg dish. If too spicy then just use one red chili. If the family does not like chili, then substitute red capsicum (bell pepper).

Cooking Method In a small bowl, beat the eggs with milk and salt and pepper.

In a non-stick frying pan over medium heat, warm just enough olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Add the onion, chilies and garlic. Stirring occasionally, cook until onions are transparent.

Give the egg mixture a couple more stirs. Add eggs to frying pan over the other ingredients. When eggs begin to set, start stirring every few seconds to scramble the eggs. Cook until eggs are completely set. Do not overcook or the eggs will become ‘rubbery’.

Serve warm on a warm plate.
