Schools, restaurants and government workers were told to cut use of plastic and foam containers and adapt cloth bags and other biodegradable materials. Deputy Mayor Apichart Virapal opened the Aug. 29 lecture for about 70 civil servants and businesspeople. He said Thailand is Southeast Asia’s largest producer of garbage at 1.76 kilograms per person, per day. The country dumps 45,000 pieces of plastic or foam per person, per year, he said. He said Pattaya needs to cut back on plastic and foam use, and said government workers need to take a lead role in the campaign. Restaurants also must stop using foam and adapt paper or

Banglamung orders safety measures for highways 36-7 interchange

Banglamung has ordered contractors widening Highway 36 in Kratinglai to put up signs, reflective tape and traffic cones to prevent cars from driving off the road.

Warapun Jaikusol Banglamung has ordered contractors widening Highway 36 in Kratinglai to put up signs, reflective tape and traffic cones to prevent cars from driving off the road. Following numerous accidents and even more

complaints, the district told the contractor to place lights and reflective warning signs along the construction zone and place orange cones at regular intervals to slow traffic. The improvements come more than a month after highway workers removed

streetlights around the work zone at the Highway 36Highway 7 interchange in Pong, which is being widened to six lanes. The highway on both sides has been dug up, but is badly marked and, at night, the meter-deep trenches can’t be seen. Cars have plunged into huge trenches in the dark. About seven kilometers of roadway are being rebuilt with work expected to continue through December.

Proposed heavy traffic fines under review Boonlua Chatree Chonburi’s Land Transport Department confirmed that heavy fines proposed under a new driving law are still under review. The Transport Ministry was forced to pull the penalties proposed under the combined Land Transport Law and Vehicle Law amid objections from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and outrage from the public. Myanmar court sentences Reuters reporters to 7 years in jail Victoria Milko & Aung Naing Soe Yangon, Myanmar (AP) A Myanmar court sentenced two Reuters journalists to seven years in prison Monday for illegal possession of official documents, a ruling met with international condemnation that will add to outrage over the military’s human rights abuses against Rohingya Muslims. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo had been reporting on the brutal crackdown on the Rohingya when they were arrested and charged with violating the colonial-era Official Secrets Act, punishable by up to 14 years in prison. They had pleaded not guilty, contending that they were framed by police. “Today is a sad day for Myanmar, Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, and the press everywhere,” Stephen J. Adler, Reuters editor-in-chief, said in a statement. He said the charges were “designed to silence their reporting and intimidate the press.” The case has drawn worldwide attention as an example of how democratic reforms in long-isolated Myanmar have stalled under the civilian government of Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, which took power in 2016. Though the military, which ruled the country for a half-century, maintains control of several key ministries, Suu Kyi’s rise to government had raised hopes for an accelerated transition to full democracy and her stance on the Rohingya crisis has disappointed many former admirers. As the verdict was announced in the hot Yangon courtroom, Kyaw Soe Oo’s wife started crying, leaning into the lap of the person next to her. Outside the court, police and journalists shouted as the two Reuters reporters were led to a truck to be taken away. “This is unfair,” Wa Lone told the crowd. “I want to say

they are obviously threatening our democracy and destroying freedom of the press in our country.” Kevin Krolicki, Reuters regional editor for Asia, said outside the court that it was “heartbreaking for friends and colleagues and family of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who in addition to the outrage many will feel, are deprived of their friends and colleagues, husband and father.” Wa Lone, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, both testified they suffered from harsh treatment during their initial interrogations after their arrests last December. Their several appeals for release on bail were rejected. Wa Lone’s wife, Pan Ei Mon, gave birth to the couple’s first child in Yangon on Aug. 10, but Wa Lone has not yet seen his daughter. The two journalists had been reporting last year on the brutal crackdown by security forces on the Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. Some 700,000 Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape the violence targeting them after attacks by Rohingya militants killed a dozen members of the security forces. Investigators working for the U.N.’s top human rights body said last week that genocide charges should be brought against senior Myanmar military officers over the crackdown.

The accusation of genocide was rejected by Myanmar’s government, but is the most serious official recommendation for prosecution so far. Also last week, Facebook banned Myanmar’s powerful military chief and 19 other individuals and organizations from its site to prevent the spread of hate and misinformation in connection with the Rohingya crisis. “Today’s verdict cannot conceal the truth of what happened in Rakhine State,” Tirana Hassan, Amnesty International’s director of crisis response, said in a statement Monday. “It’s thanks to the bravery of journalists like Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, that the military’s atrocities have been exposed. Instead of targeting these two journalists, the Myanmar authorities should have been going after those responsible for killings, rape, torture and the torching of hundreds of Rohingya villages.” The court earlier this year declined to stop the trial after an initial phase of presentation of evidence, even though a policeman called as a prosecution witness testified that his commander had ordered that documents be planted on the journalists. After his testimony, the officer was jailed for a year for violating police regulations and his family was kicked out of police housing. Other testimony by prosecution witnesses was contradictory, and the documents presented as evidence against the reporters appeared to be neither secret nor sensitive. The journalists testified they did not solicit or knowingly possess any secret documents.

Pattaya shophouses raided for sex drugs

Banglamung District Chief Naris Niramaiwong led Pattaya and Tourist police and officers from Excise Office 2 and the Banglamung District Public Health Office in the sweep of South Pattaya shops selling illegal sex contraband.

Boonlua Chatree Two people were arrested and about 100,000 baht in illegal sex drugs and toys seized during raids in Pattaya. Banglamung District Chief Naris Niramaiwong led Pattaya and Tourist police and officers from Excise Office 2 and the Banglamung District Public Health Office in the sweep of South Pattaya shophouses. Similar crackdowns were

carried out at the same time in Bangkok. Authorities said they were looking for banned aphrodisiacs like Spanish Fly and date-rape drugs such as gammahydroxybutyrate. Police did find GHB at two stores, along with illegal sex toys, untaxed smuggled cigarettes and Taser weapons. Proprietors Jirakrit Techawanitch, 47, and Suchada Sanmahachai, 49, were taken into custody. Both claimed they got the contraband from a Bangkok supplier.

Lovesick car thief thwarted by GPS Boonlua Chatree A lovesick car thief who planned to drive a stolen Nissan to see his Issan girlfriend was busted when police followed the car’s GPS tracker to Najomtien. Prawit Kitfaruwankul, 44, was captured at his house in a government public housing development in Najomtien Sub-district Aug. 29. The Nissan March was recovered along with eight car batteries. Prawit confessed he stole the car from the Wan-San automotive garage on Soi Khao Talo Aug. 28 after staking it out for weeks.

Prawit Kitfaruwankul has been arrested for grand theft auto as well as theft of eight car batteries.

He said he took the batteries to sell for cash, but took the car so he could drive to Ubon Ratchathani to see his girlfriend.

Officers showed up at his house before he could go, however, as they easily tracked the car via its GPSenabled anti-theft device.

U-Tapao airport renovation project to Terminal 21 Pattaya to open Oct. 19 be completed on schedule: PMO minister

The U-Tapao Airport renovation project will go ahead as planned.

The U-Tapao Airport renovation project will go ahead as planned and is expected to be completed on schedule to accommodate the growth of visitors to Thailand, said Prime Minister’s Office Minister Kobsak Pootrakool. He made comments on the U-Tapao renovation project in Chonburi during a seminar organized for investors and private firms on the Eastern Economic Corridor and Eastern Aviation City projects. He said the government has had a vision to turn the EEC into Thailand’s second

megalopolis and gateway to the ASEAN region, thus requiring the air transport facility to be upgraded. The government has planned to upgrade U-Tapao airport into Thailand’s third key international airport in addition to Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi airports which are already providing connectivity between this country and many world destinations. The PMO minister reassured that the renovation and expansion plan of UTapao airport will be completed on schedule, with

future plans to build an advanced aviation maintenance center. The government also intends to open training centers for aviation professionals and mechanics, while the Board of Investment of Thailand is attracting firms from around the world to open their office under the Aviation City project. U-Tapao airport is expected to see a jump in the number of passengers in the future as the airport is serving Pattaya, a world-famous beach city which attracts many visitors each year. (NNT)

Samsung’s $1,000 Note 9 is great but so is the cheaper S9 Anick Jesdanun New York (AP) - For $1,000, the premium Galaxy Note 9 is a superb phone that showcases the best Samsung has to offer. It’s also the phone most of you won’t need. That’s because you can get many of the same features in Samsung’s Galaxy S9 for a few hundred dollars less. The Note 9, available Friday, is the Android smartphone for those who want the latest and the greatest. There’s a larger battery, with a 21 percent boost over last year’s Note 8 model. The Note 9 gets 128 gigabytes of storage, double what’s in the S9 and Apple’s iPhones. And of course, a large screen.

But there’s not much “wow” beyond that. Smartphone innovation has slowed down in recent years. It’s more noticeable with Samsung because the company spreads out those innovations between two major smartphones each year. One phone inevitably plays catch up with the other every six months. So now we find that the Note 9 is getting the zippy processor and cellular speeds the S9 phones first offered earlier this year. It’s also getting the S9’s dual-aperture camera for better low-light shots as well as its gimmicky, but super-fun, ability to take video with super-slow motion. And the S9 starts at just $720 through T-Mobile, and about $800 through Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. A Plus

Scientists find perfectly preserved ancient foal in Siberia Moscow (AP) - Russian scientists have found the carcass of an ancient foal perfectly preserved in the Siberian permafrost. The fossil discovered in the region of Yakutia has its skin, hair, hooves and tail preserved. Yakutia is also famous having wooly mammoth fossils found in the permafrost. Scientists from Russia’s Northeast Federal University who presented the discovery Thursday said the foal is estimated to be 30,000 to 40,000 years old. They believe it was about two months old when it died. Semyon Grigoryev, head of the Mammoth Museum in the regional capital of Yakutsk, was surprised to see

the perfect state of the find. He noted it’s the best-preserved ancient foal found to date. The foal was discovered in

version that’s closer in size to the Note 9 costs $840 to $930. True, the Note 9 offers a little more wowness. Its camera uses artificial intelligence to optimize colors and lighting for what you’re trying to shoot, be it food, a sunset or flowers. Many low-light shots were even better than what the S9 produced, even though both share the second aperture designed to let in more light when needed. Of course, you’re likely to see this feature in the S10 in about six months. That brings us to one of the Note’s remaining distinctive features, its stylus. It’s useful

for handwriting notes and signing documents on the screen. Now, it can control digital slideshows and music playback, too. The new stylus gets Bluetooth to double as a remote control. Selfies won’t look as awkward when you don’t have to reach for the on-screen button; just press the pen to snap the shutter. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot the remote feature can do yet. It’s a promising feature - but could remain mostly a promise if app developers don’t take advantage of it. Many past Samsung features failed to gain traction

because app developers couldn’t be bothered to make the tweaks needed. For instance, Air View was supposed to offer pop-up previews just by pointing to an email and calendar entry, but it mostly worked only with Samsung’s home-grown apps. More recently, there’s Bixby, Samsung’s own digital assistant. While Samsung has worked directly with some services, including Uber and Spotify, on integrations, developers have largely prioritized Amazon’s Alexa and the Google Assistant. It comes down to a chicken-or-egg problem: People need to see compelling capabilities to use a feature; developers need to see a strong base of users to spend the time developing compelling capabilities. The stylus remains the Note’s signature feature, with or without extensive remote capabilities. No doubt the new edition will appeal to diehard Samsung fans, hardcore gamers and on-the-go executives who are on their phones constantly and need the battery and storage boost. Though the Note 9 uses the same processor as the S9, it has a new cooling system designed to let you use those faster speeds longer. But if you’re not someone who needs all that power, you ought to take a second look at the cheaper, sixmonth-old S9.

Expert: Fires will get deadlier as cities grow, planet warms

Drought reveals ancient ‘hunger stones’ in European river Decin, Czech Republic (AP) - Due to this summer’s drought in Central Europe, boulders known as “hunger stones” are reappearing in the Elbe River. The low water levels in the river that begins in the Czech Republic then crosses Germany into the North Sea has exposed stones on the river bed whose appearances in history used to warn people that hard times were coming. Over a dozen of the hunger stones, chosen to record low water levels, can now be seen in and near the northern Czech town of Decin near the German border. The oldest water mark visible dates to 1616. That stone, which is considered the oldest hydrological landmark in Central Europe, bears a chiseled inscription in German that says: “When you see me, cry.” On of the so called “hunger stones” exposed by the low level of water in the Elbe River in Decin, Czech Republic, Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018. The blaze killed 96 people and gutted hundreds of homes in a seaside area near Athens. Goldammer says that climate change, growing cities and changes in land use and commercial agriculture have created an increased the risk of deadly wildfires globally.

Biting on a bullet! Surgeons can be the ‘prima donnas’ of medicine, if you like. It is the surgeons who get the headlines in the newspapers. It is the surgeons who are the stars in movies and TV. Who can remember the irascible surgeon Sir Lancelot Spratt (Dr. In The House, 1954) or the young surgeon Dr. Kildare (1961)? Slightly more recent, the American surgeons in M*A*S*H? However, surgeons have been around for many centuries and have their own Royal College. The origins of the first Royal College of Surgeons go back to the fourteenth century with the foundation of the ‘Guild of Surgeons Within the City of London’. There was dispute between the surgeons and barber surgeons until an agreement was signed between them in 1493, giving the fellowship of surgeons the power of incorporation. In 1745 the surgeons broke away from the barbers to form the Company of Surgeons. In 1800 the Company was granted a Royal Charter to become the Royal College of Surgeons in London. A further charter in 1843 granted it the present title of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (of which I proudly say I am a member). We marvel at the surgical advances in the past century, but while I take my hat off to the surgeons, the real praise goes to the anesthetists. Without the advances in anesthetics, brawny assistants would still be holding patients down while surgeons attacked with scalpels and saws and the patient lay there biting on a bullet.

The first anesthetic agent was ether, dribbled on to a mask to knock the patient out and allow the surgeon to take his time and become meticulous in his approach. The first public demonstration of ether anesthesia took place on 16 October 1846, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The anesthetist was William Morton and the surgeon was John Warren; and the operation was the removal of a lump under the jaw of a Gilbert Abbott. While there have been enormous advances since then, I can remember being a medical student and assisting at an operation in outback Australia in 1964. The anesthetic was ether, dribbled on to the patient’s gauze mask by the matron of the public hospital, and it was a Caesarian section for twins. There was no air-conditioning and it was 43 degrees in the theatre, where the fumes were making us all woozy. Amazingly everyone survived the ordeal, mother, twin sons, the local doctor, the matron and me. Despite outback Australia, anesthesia progressed in the rest of the world. Chloroform was introduced by James Simpson, the Professor of Obstetrics in Edinburgh, in November 1847. This was a more potent agent but it had more severe side effects, including sudden death. However, it worked well and was easier to use than ether and so, despite its drawbacks, became very popular. The next major advance was the introduction of local anesthesia – cocaine – in 1877. Things definitely did go better with ‘coke’! Then came local infiltration, nerve

blocks and then spinal and epidural anesthesia, which in the 1900s allowed surgery in a relaxed abdomen, and is still used today, especially in obstetric anesthesia, where the mother can be anaesthetized without the baby being affected as well. The next important innovation was the control of the airways with the use of tubes placed into the trachea. This permitted control of breathing and techniques introduced in the 1910s were perfected in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Then came the introduction of intravenous induction agents. These were barbiturates which enabled the patient to go off to sleep quickly, smoothly and pleasantly and therefore avoided any unpleasant inhalational agents. Then in the 1940s and early 1950s, there came the introduction of muscle relaxants, firstly with curare (the South American Indian poison, but not administered by native blowpipe) and then agents less dangerous. Anesthesia is now very safe, with mortality of less than 1 in 250,000 directly related to anesthesia. Nevertheless, with today’s sophisticated monitoring systems and a greater understanding of bodily functions, the anesthetic profession will continue to strive for improvement over the next 150 years.” On behalf of all patients requiring surgery in the future I thank the anesthetists. No longer do they have to bite on this bullet!

Hopes rise again for a drug to slow Alzheimer’s disease Marilynn Marchione Chicago (AP) - Hopes are rising again for a drug to alter the course of Alzheimer’s disease after decades of failures. An experimental therapy slowed mental decline by 30 percent in patients who got the highest dose in a mid-stage study, and it removed much of the sticky plaque gumming up their brains, the drug’s makers said Wednesday. The results have been highly anticipated and have sent the stock of the two companies involved soaring in recent weeks. The drug from Eisai and Biogen did not meet its main goal in a study of 856 participants, so overall, it was considered a flop. But company officials said that 161 people who got the highest dose every two weeks for 18 months did significantly better than 245 people who were given a dummy treatment. There are lots of caveats about the work, which was led by company scientists rather than academic researchers and not reviewed by outside experts. The study also was too small to be definitive and the results need to be confirmed with more work, dementia experts said. But they welcomed

This Oct. 7, 2003 file photo shows a section of a human brain with Alzheimer’s disease on display at the Museum of Neuroanatomy at the University at Buffalo, in Buffalo, N.Y. On Wednesday, July 25, 2018, two drug makers said an experimental therapy slowed mental decline by 30 percent in patients who got the highest dose in a mid-stage study, and it removed much of the sticky plaque gumming up their brains. any glimmer of success after multiple failures. “We’re cautiously optimistic,” said Maria Carrillo, chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Association, whose international conference in Chicago featured the results. “A 30 percent slowing of decline is something I would want my family member to have,” and the drug’s ability to clear the brain plaques “looks pretty amazing,” she said.

About 50 million people worldwide have dementia, and Alzheimer’s is the most common type. There is no cure - current medicines just ease symptoms. Some previous efforts to develop a drug to slow the disease may have been tried too late, after much damage had already occurred. The new drug aimed sooner, in people with early Alzheimer’s, and the drug works at an earlier step in formation of the sticky brain plaques. Study participants were given one of five doses of BAN2401 or a dummy treatment via IV. After one year, the companies said the drug didn’t meet statistical goals. But after 18 months, they saw a benefit in the highest dose group. What makes it tricky, though, is that they used a new way

to measure mental decline, a scale that combines parts of three other widely used tests. This is the first study to use that measure, and it’s unclear how much of a difference a 30 percent slowing of decline makes whether it allows someone to continue to bathe or feed himself, for instance. “It’s intriguing, but these are designs we’re not used to seeing,” and it will require more study for doctors to feel comfortable with this as a measure of success, said one independent expert, Dr. Julie Schneider of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. On one traditional measure of thinking skills, those at the highest dose declined 47 percent less than people given a dummy treatment. Brain scans added evidence that the drug might be effective. All participants had signs of the sticky plaques that are the hallmark of Alzheimer’s at the start of the study, but 81 percent of people on the highest dose saw all signs of them disappear after 18 months, an Eisai official said. Side effects leading to discontinuation of treatment occurred in 19 percent of those on the high dose and 6 percent of the dummy treatment group. Cases of brain swelling, which have been seen in other treatments targeting the plaques in the brain, occurred in two people in the placebo group and 16 of those in the high dose group. Other dementia experts were encouraged. “That’s a very hopeful outcome. It means we may be

on the right track,” said another scientist with no role in the work, Dr. Stephen Salloway, neurology chief at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Reisa Sperling, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said it’s important to realize that this is not a cure, just possibly a slowing of decline. “We’re not suddenly returning people back to their pre-Alzheimer’s baseline,” she said. Dr. Lynn Kramer, chief medical officer of Eisai’s neurology unit, said the companies would talk with

regulators about further studies. Shares of Biogen, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Eisai, based in Tokyo, soared after July 5 when they announced that the drug had slowed the progression of early Alzheimer’s disease for certain patients. Biogen’s stock jumped 19.6 percent in one day, its biggest move in 14 years, and has continued to rise. Eisai rocketed 40 percent in two days. Biogen stock gyrated in aftermarket trading after the study results were released. After switching between gains and losses several times, it fell 6.5 percent.

Black bear wandered into hotel that inspired ‘The Shining’ Estes Park, Colo. (AP) - A black bear wandered the lobby of the Colorado hotel that inspired Stephen King to write “The Shining.” Stanley Hotel Vice President Reed Rowley tells KDVR-TV that 300 guests were sound asleep as the bruin figured out how to open the door and climbed over furniture. A front desk supervisor captured video of the romp. There was no damage, but the furniture got rearranged before the bear walked out of the lower level door. The hotel in Estes Park opened in 1909. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. King wrote “The Shining” after he and his wife stayed at The Stanley in 1974. The 1980 horror film was not shot there.

Cliff house: Unique Swiss restaurant looks for new tenants Berlin (AP) - One of Switzerland’s most picturesque restaurants will soon be looking for a new operator. The Gasthaus Aescher, built into a cliff above a valley in northeastern Switzerland, has been run by the same family since 1987. It gained recognition outside the Alpine nation when it was featured on the cover of a National Geographic book of “destinations of a lifetime” in 2016. Authorities in Appenzell Innerrhoden canton (state) said Monday that the current tenants, Nicole and Bernhard Knechtle-Fritsche, are giving up the lease at the end of the 2018 season. The restaurant opens from May until the beginning of November. (Steffen Schmidt/ Keystone via AP)

Coast Guard offering reward for info on buoy bell thieves Portland, Maine (AP) - The Coast Guard is offering a reward for information about brass gongs and bells that have been stolen from 10 buoys off of Maine’s coast. The Coast Guard says nine bells were stolen from Penobscot Bay, and one was stolen off Bailey Island in Harpswell. The bell assembly stolen from the White Bull Gong buoy off Bailey Island weighed 371 pounds. The sounding devices help boats navigate when there is poor visibility, and the Coast Guard says they are most likely being sold to nautical novelty stores or scrap yards. Coast Guard Lt. Matthew Odom previously said the thefts put lives at risk and cost taxpayers. Tampering with navigation aids is a federal crime, punishable by up to $25,000 per day.

Novelty hand grenades found in checked luggage at airport Newark, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say two suspected hand grenades found in a woman’s checked bag at Newark Liberty International Airport were actually novelty bottle openers. Transportation Security Administration officials say the realistic looking replicas were found Tuesday. The woman eventually was allowed to board her flight, but her luggage didn’t make it on the plane due to the delay at the screening area. The woman’s name and the airline she was flying were not disclosed. Officials say the bottoms of the fake hand grenades are hollowed out so they can be used as bottle openers. They note that the items come with a warning notice that tells travelers not to bring them into airports because they can look real to screeners using X-ray machines to scan luggage.

Mom who hosted elaborate $25k prom send-off accused of fraud Philadelphia (AP) - A Philadelphia woman who made headlines for an elaborate prom send-off has been charged with Social Security benefits fraud. The U.S. attorney’s office in Philadelphia announced charges of wire fraud, theft of government funds and Social Security fraud Tuesday against 44-year-old Saudia Shuler. Prosecutors say that Shuler applied for benefits, describing herself as disabled and unable to work, but continued working - including operating a restaurant - costing the government more than $36,000. Shuler threw a $25,000 Dubai-themed prom party for her son last year. This year, she threw a “Black Panther”-themed prom send-off with an actual panther for neighborhood kids. She said the party cost was in the six figures. Defense attorney Tariq el Shabazz told WPVI-TV Shuler suffered a stroke, was in rehab and couldn’t do anything for two-plus years.

Smart phones have a downside Yes, I have a smart phone. Yes, it is much smarter than me. Friends who believe in the digital revolution have given up trying to educate me. But I can dial a number and receive telephone calls. However, just as digital cameras changed the photographic world, so did smartphones 20 years later. In fact, smartphones have all but killed the low end of the compact camera market. However, the smartphone story is not all bad, but also not all good. The first upside with smartphones is you are likely to have one in your pocket at all times – unless it is too big and you keep it

in your handbag (or manbag). The availability of an instrument that can record images (I stop short of calling smartphones “cameras”) means that those ‘once in a lifetime’ shots are yours. One plus for smartphones is the ability to see your photos instantly, and then upload the image to other smartphone users, or people who can access your electronic image bank. Being able to visualize the resulting shot has been, for my money, the best feature of digital photography. Used sensibly, you can see what you have to do to get the best shot of the subject. The skill is in actually looking critically at your own shot, modifying items and shooting again. “Instantly!” “Selfies” – the less said about selfies the better, as far as I am concerned. If you want a pleasing likeness of yourself, then do it with a camera which has the ability

Dear Hillary, I love your column, but it always amazes me that so many Brits fall for the same traps. I come here with my wife every year for three months and we of course don’t spend our time in the bars as there are so many good things to see or do. How the traffic is going to handle the new 21 shopping center, complete with its own jet plane in the car park, I don’t know. Our friends back home don’t believe us. Getting back to my question, my wife suggests that there should be a warning on the airline tickets, maybe using your wise words? Albert and Maddy Dear Albert and Maddy, What a lovely couple you are, worrying about the young lads on their holidays. Do the warnings on cigarette packets really work? The same would go for warnings on airline tickets I think. There have been many books written with warnings about falling in love with a Thai lady, but like the fag packet warnings, do they actually get read? No, I think that for the young lads Pattaya is just another step towards maturity. A step they will remember all their lives. So, if they lose a little money on the way, does it really matter? You get nothing for nothing. Dear Hillary, Where do you suggest I take my Thai GF for dinner? She is an up-country girl so not used to haute cuisine, but I’d like to take her somewhere she will enjoy for her birthday, but not too expensive either. Hamish Dear Hamish, What a lovely Scottish name. And a lovely Scottish tight hand on the sporran. Or wherever you Scottish people keep your money. Hamish, my Petal, your lovely girl from Isaan

to set a focal length of at least 100 mm and produce a flattering image. I have no desire to see up your nostrils. Forget megapixels. Smartphone owners often select the camera phone with the largest number of pixels. The more the merrier. Unfortunately that is not necessarily the case. There are other factors, so do not think that you will be taking award winning photographs with your hand phone. Another good point with your smartphone pix is the easy ability to send your photos far and wide through

social media. Before, you developed your film and then showed a final print to a circle of friends, now, with the capabilities inherent in the smartphone, you can send your photos to anywhere. The bad points have to begin with the almost universal fascination of looking at the small screen while walking along, not seeing anyone in front of you, in fact not seeing anyone else at all. Another bad point comes with the photojournalism experience. You are there, you have the smartphone

and you take the shots. But should you not have been helping, instead of recording? Assisting your fellow man in a time of crisis instead of recording your fellow man’s crisis? Very common with road accidents, which we all see every day. I know, it is a moral issue more than a photographic issue, but one that should be met. Smartphones may have killed the compact camera, but also killed personal communication. Look at couples in a restaurant, flicking through their messages and not talking to each other. I particularly like the cartoon of a notice board saying “Sorry. No WiFi. Try talking to each other.” The other, where the waiter asks “Was there something wrong with your food? You didn’t take a photograph of it.” The third demerit, as far as I am concerned is an acceptance of the mediocre.

Smartphones just give you ‘record’ shots. An ability to change the depth of field has been lost. Stopping motion has been lost. In fact, any creative instinct is not transferred by smartphones. And if you really want something dreadful, try using one of those aftermarket “wide angle” lenses you stick on the smartphone! One reason for the mediocrity is no restriction. Where with film you took 36 shots on a roll, you can now take hundreds stored in the phone. This means that where once you ‘thought’ about the images you were recording, now it is click, click, click and then flick, flick, flick looking for one that might be OK. No, smartphones are here to stay, but this does not mean they are good instruments for taking photographs. Happy snaps are not examples of good photography.

is used to sitting on the floor, sharing the curries and rice, and not Canadian lobster. If she invites a couple of friends, you are looking at spending 200 baht on food, and 1,000 baht on Thai whisky. Cheap enough for you? You can always go chasing balloons for a really top night if the balloons are too exy.

An instruction manual for the after dinner entertainment might be useful as well. There’s more to it than a muffled moan during congress. PS. I think the Thai poster version would sell like hot cakes! Honorable Neil

Dear Hillary, I read that the owners of the big flashy massage parlor in Bangkok have been sent to jail for peddling prostitution. Are they kidding? If some randy old blokes want to indulge, surely it is better in an upmarket surroundings than a grubby suburban back street knocking shop? Confused

Dear Honorable Neil, A real MCP (left over from the 70’s) otherwise known as a Male Chauvinist Pig! Neil, my precious Petal, you don’t honestly think Hillary is going to support this cause, do you? I will ignore the reference to “my boss” as Hillary is a self-determining lady of uncertain years, and as such, doesn’t have a “boss”. But really, do you expect your Thai wife to spend the finale for the day planning your evening needs? Come on, Neil. However, if your wife is not giving a “small moan ... to indicate enjoyment” during the act of “congress” then perhaps it’s your technique that is lacking. Perhaps an instruction book in English, rather than your poster in Thai might be a better plan.

Dear Confused, Yes you have got yourself confused, Petal. They got put away for promoting under-age prostitution, and that was under 15 years old, not for the “shop” itself. The idea of a “happy ending” is something between the masseuse and the client and is between two consenting adults, and as far as I know does not break the law, but then I’ve never been in Victoria’s Secret Massage, so it can remain “secret”. Dear Hillary, I read with interest an article in headed “Good Old Days”. It contained an extract from a home economics textbook printed in the 60’s “The Good Wife Guide”. I was hoping that you could have the text translated into Thai and reprinting it in a future Pattaya Mail. My motives are entirely honorable. I merely intend to have the Thai transcript of the guide enlarged into poster size and hung up on my wall so that my Thai wife can read it every time she forgets the reason she was put on this planet. Thanks Hillary.

Dear Hillary, I am sure that you must make up some of the letters in your column because surely people are not that silly. What I want to know is just how do you dream up the subject matter? Do you study other agony aunt columns or what? Do you get your inspiration from real life? Tell me and I promise not to tell a single solitary soul. The Enquirer Dear Enquirer, Are you suggesting Hillary makes up this drivel? Sorry, Poppet, Hillary couldn’t possibly make up letters as silly as yours. So you think people aren’t that silly - well think again - you are one of them, my little turtle dove. Don’t take this too hard, but when you have passed puberty you must write to me again.

GIS enjoys best-ever IGCSE results Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona Garden International School (GIS) has had its best-ever set of IGCSE results. Students achieved an incredible 91 percent pass rate following the examinations in May, compared with 67 percent UK pass rate for GCSEs. In addition, 89 percent of GIS students achieved 5 or more passes (a pass is regarded as a grade A*-C). This is also far above the UK average. Also, 40 percent of GIS grades were A*/A, compared with 20 percent for the UK equivalent. Among the star students were Ash, who was awarded a total of 10 IGCSEs. Of these, 8 were A* grades and 2 were A grades. His twin sister Cheshta also did brilliantly. She achieved a total of 9 IGCSEs, including 6 A* grades, 2 A grades and 1 B grade. Another student with great results was Shann, who gained a total of 9 IGCSEs, including 5 A* grades and 4 A grades. Shann, Ash and Cheshta are now all studying for the IB Diploma at GIS. In addition, several Year 10 students took IGCSE

Oliver Franz spoke about his company which offers trained medical nursing services for those in need. The other, Shayachon (Rose) Ridhirantana spoke about how to avoid condominium problems in Thailand. Oliver introduced his new and well thought out business “Rent a Nurse”, a service he felt was very much needed in Thailand for a multitude of differing needs and levels of home medical care. It is a service designed to operate either alongside traditional hospital care, or independently. Rent a Nurse can be tailor-made to suit one’s budget, needs and wants together with the level

useful step for future care. Many people would truly welcome the option of combining the comfort of home nursing without the hassle and discomfort of a hospital visit. All Rent a Nurse documents are written in English, may be insurance approved, and much more. For information visit www.rentanurse .asia or email info@ rentanurse.asia. Thai, English, German and Swedish languages are covered at present. The main speaker followed Oliver’s presentation. Rose, a previous speaker, who is multitalented by being a facilitator between Thai and English speaking foreigners as well as an accomplished Master of Ceremonies for events and dancing tournaments who also sings popular music. Rose is also very

of medical attention required; maybe after hospitalisation through accident or illness or just a brief flu or sprained foot. All nurses are fully qualified and supervised and accountable, whilst often working as a team, a Registered Nurse (RN) may be accompanied with a Practical Nurse to take care of patients who may need moving or lifting. The service can be a one-off or long-term and also provides supervised shopping, social activities, escorted hospital visits including escorted visits for exercise/ sporting activities. It can also range from providing advice on dietary needs through to operating a mobile dialysis machine. As a further option, the rearranging of furniture around the patient’s home can be a very

well versed in the minefield of Expats dealing with the legal and financial pitfalls of condo ownership. She understands that the language and cultural difference can cause many difficulties and sometimes very expensive mistakes. To avoid problems, she presented several things “we must know,” “things we must do,” and “things we must not do.” In her opinion, the real estate laws are more lacking and of a debatable opinion rather than fact. Her top three pointers before purchasing. 1) Do your own due diligence before choosing to purchase a condo. Research not just the unit but also the surrounding area. 2) Avoid the “one stop shop” as often they may ask you to sign a “simple” contract, which may not be so simple.

Member Ren Lexander presents the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation to Rose Shayachon, while Pisit Chutiphonphongchai, Thai Barrister at Law, looks on.

Even more so than back home, in Thailand, the Golden Rule is simple, “Never” sign anything dealing with the purchase of real property without first consulting a qualified lawyer. Another big tip is to have all the Thai documents transcribed into your native language and check the details before finalising anything. 3) Check out the Condominium’s Bylaw Book and avoid parting with large deposits; 5% should be ample to secure or move forwards with a purchase. Along with these basic rules, people often get caught out and lose money, when dealing with matters privately too. Rose cited one instance where a buyer trusted a friend acting as agent, and paid a deposit, but after patiently waiting for the deal to be finalised, the buyer realised the deal was suspicious and reported it to authorities. Unlike English law where fraud has no time limit, the buyer was unfortunately unaware that the agent kept promising to return the money, but was really biding her time as she knew that there is a three month statute of limitation under criminal law for reporting it to police. That is three months from discovery. People are also often confused regarding a Juristic Person. The term “person” in legal terms can mean either a sole individual or a body of people. In the case of a Juristic Person (JP) in Thailand, it refers to the “Entity” with jurisdiction over the bylaws, maintenance and accounting for the condominium common areas. The JP hires someone to manage the property, who is referred to as the Juristic Person Manager (JPM).

She pointed out there is always a two-way agreement in place, whereby each party has rights, duties, obligations and limitations. Rose advised to always be on the correct side of your contract and seek remedy for any issues legally. She advised that you should 1) make sure you have an up to date copy of the Bylaw Book, 2) as tempting as it may be, never withhold or delay due monies as a lever to solve an issue, and 3) never fall afoul of the building rules. As a condominium owner, you have the right in law to demand relevant information from the JPM. Also, be careful what you say in public that is negative about a person or business as it could violate Thai law regarding slander, libel, and defamation whether this pertains to condos or otherwise. She noted that as deserving as you think it may be, it can be a criminal offence for which the courts can and do prosecute. Rose says she acts as a unique mediator/interpreter between client and lawyer to iron out misunderstandings or miscommunications to avoid problems and make the process of buying in Thailand a smooth trouble-free experience. She also is an authorized court interpreter. The meeting concluded with MC Richard Silverberg bringing everyone up to date on upcoming events followed by the Open Forum where members and guests can ask questions or make comments about Expat living in Thailand. Going Nuts in Brazil Lehninger (Duration: 31:02; Video: 480p)

Heitor Villa-Lobos

You may have forgotten of course, but 7th September is Brazil’s Independence Day, a national holiday commemorating independence from Portugal in 1822. When in 1500, the Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvarez Cabral became the first European to set foot in what is now Brazil, the country was inhabited by an estimated two thousand different nations and tribes, many of which were semi-nomadic. Cabral promptly claimed the area for the Portugal, which is why Brazil is the only South American country where the official language is Portuguese. Today, there are also nearly two hundred indigenous languages. Little is known about the music of Brazil before 1500 since no written records exist. We have simply no idea what it sounded like. The European settlers brought

with them European musical traditions, though you might have a hard time coming up the names of Brazilian classical composers. Little of their music is performed elsewhere. Only a handful has achieved recognition in Europe and America, most notably Carlos Gomes, Cláudio Santoro and Oscar Lorenzo Fernández. But one figure towers above them. The only Brazilian composer who has achieved world-wide fame was Heitor Villa-Lobos. He was both a conductor and an amazingly prolific composer best known for his Brazilian-sounding music, achieved by drawing heavily on Brazilian folk dances and traditions.

Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959): Choros No. 6. Orquesta Sinfonica Simón Bolívar cond. Marcelo

Stravinsky once asked, “Why is it that whenever I hear a piece of music I don’t like, it’s always by Villa-Lobos?” Despite Stravinsky’s bitchy remark, the colourful, cigarsmoking Villa-Lobos was Brazil’s most famous and respected composer. After he died in Rio de Janeiro he was given a state funeral, the final major event in Rio before the capital transferred to Brasília. He was once described as “the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music.” He was largely self-taught but composed over two thousand works. This brilliant orchestral piece is based on the Brazilian choro which means a cry or lament. It comes from a Brazilian popular music genre which originated in the late nineteenth century. Villa-Lobos wrote fourteen works named Choros all of which have different instrumentation. This work dates from 1926 and was originally scored for chamber orchestra. This powerful and compelling version for full orchestra was written in 1942 and makes much use of percussion. You might be surprised to see a soprano saxophone

among the woodwinds, a rare sight in a symphony orchestra. Villa-Lobos wrote that the work is “a kind of romance of the back-country atmosphere of North Eastern Brazil. The climate, colour, temperature, light, chirping of birds, the scent of honeyed grass between the hen-houses and all elements of nature of a hinterland served as inspiration for motives in this work.” As a bonus, the orchestra’s encore piece (at 26:20) is entitled Batuque, by Oscar Lorenzo Fernández. Much of his music too is decidedly Brazilian in character and he frequently quotes folksongs. In the early 1930s he wrote a three-act opera, entitled Malazarte which is a colourful, nationalistic work and considered the first successful Brazilian opera of its type. As composers so often do, Fernández later wrote an orchestral suite based on music in the opera. Batuque is the title of the last movement and has become especially popular. It’s easy to see why. It’s a lively, percussion-driven piece based on an AfroBrazilian folk dances with insistent and pulsating rhythms. It seems to give a foretaste of the minimalist movement which was yet to come.

Cláudio Santoro (1919-1989): Ponteio for String Orchestra. Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro cond. Claudio Cohen (Duration: 05:11; Video: 480p) Claudio Franco de Sá Santoro was one of the most energetic and multi-talented individuals of his time. He was a child prodigy violinist and later became a respected teacher, conductor and composer. He established several musical institutions in Brazil and was evidently a dynamic organizer, representing Brazil in many conferences and international organizations. He was distinguished with dozens of awards both

for his symphonic works and film soundtracks and he has been guest conductor of many top European orchestras. Ponteio was composed for string orchestra in 1954 and was first performed in that year by Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira. This delightful piece has become very popular and its haunting melody is accompanied by a rhythm that reminds the listener of strummed guitars. And by the way, did you know that Brazil nuts come from one the largest of trees in the Amazon rainforests? They can live for five hundred years or more and according to some authorities they can reach an age of a thousand years. I bet you didn’t know that. And neither did I until this morning.

‘Judas’ exposes harrowing family life of crime boss Christina Ledbetter Astrid Holleeder had a choice to make. She could continue living as a virtual slave to her brother, Willem Holleeder, or she could risk her life and help the Dutch police take him down. She chose the latter. Written from her place in hiding, “Judas” is Astrid’s story of deception, turmoil and — ultimately — courage. Willem “Wim” Holleeder is best known for his rap sheet. Involved in the 1983 kidnapping of the CEO of Heineken brewing company, he kept a tight reign over his family both from within and outside of prison. While Astrid avoided criminal life and became a lawyer, Wim forced her into the position of his confidant, legal adviser, chauffer and messenger. For decades Astrid led a precarious existence, wanting nothing to do with the threats that her brother forced her to relay, yet knowing he possessed the connections to have enemies killed over even the slightest of betrayals.

“Judas” adds history and emotion to a story previously reserved for news broadcasts and police reports. Astrid takes readers into her childhood home and paints a grisly picture of her and her siblings’ distorted upbringing. Her account then turns to her adulthood and eventually moves to her time serving as a double agent in efforts to put her brother behind bars for life. Originally written for a Dutch audience familiar with the backdrop, readers may find themselves feeling their way through the dark as many scenes unfold untethered to context. In the same vein, at times, conversations float about unanchored to setting or descriptors. With to-the-point prose and a precise focus on dialogue and timelines, “Judas” presents a matter-of-fact account of Astrid’s relationship with her brother while remaining a stark statement about how one familial tie can strangle so many lives. Denzel Washington kills in ‘The Equalizer 2’ Mark Kennedy Los Angeles (AP) - You won’t usually find Denzel Washington in a movie sequel. He just doesn’t do them. Something about not wanting to repeat himself. So there must be something special indeed for him to break his own rule for “The Equalizer 2.” Fans of the first film will instantly know why Washington is drawn to the character of Robert McCall, a quiet middle-aged retired specialops agent who fiercely believes in justice, likes to help others and dispenses the occasional lethal judgement for those deserving. “We all have to pay for our sins,” he tells a group of very bad guys in the new, highly satisfying edition, before vowing to hunt each one dead. His only regret? He can kill them only once.

“The Equalizer 2 “ reconnects many of the people behind the 2014 debut alongside the always-vital Washington — Antoine Fuqua returns to direct, as does writer Richard Wenk, and actors Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo. McCall first appeared in the mid-1980s on TV with Edward Woodward playing him as a bit of an English dandy. In the film series, Washington plays McCall as a tad obsessive-compulsive, but not consistently. He’s the kind of guy who brings his own tea bag to a restaurant in a neatly folded napkin and arranges the cutlery just so. But, when prompted, his vision suddenly becomes hyper-clear and he meticulously pre-plans every step in taking down a room of thugs, often without a gun. He’s like Monk crossed with Sherlock Holmes. In the first film, a hooker with a heart of gold pulls McCall out of retirement when she is badly beaten by her pimp. By the end,

Danny Boyle departs James Bond over ‘creative differences’ New York (AP) — The next James Bond movie has lost its director. Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, along with star Daniel Craig, announced last week that Danny Boyle has exited the project over “creative differences.” Boyle, the director of “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Trainspotting,” earlier this year confirmed that he would direct the 25th 007 film. Boyle and his regular collaborator John Hodge were working on the script. Production on the film, often referred to as “Bond 25,” was to begin in December. The movie is to be Craig’s fifth outing as James Bond, though endless speculation on his successor has been

ongoing. Most recently, Idris Elba alluded to rumors of his casting by tweeting “Elba. Idris Elba.” The 25th Bond film is scheduled for U.S. release on Nov. 8 next year.

McCall has blown up most of Boston’s waterfront, exposed a nest of corrupt local cops and systematically executed every member of a Russian gang, even going to Moscow to finish the job. The second film takes place sometime later, with McCall now a Lyft driver, selectively helping people he encounters. He’s kind to old people (a Holocaust survivor, for extra depth) and little kids, who adore him. He mentors a troubled teen (Ashton Sanders), hoping to steer him away from drug dealing and toward art school. Few people could pull off this cheesy sainthood like Washington, oozing

charisma and self-assured masculinity. When a group of smarmy, cocky Wall Street types abuse an intern during a cokefueled party, Washington drives her to the hospital and then returns to wreak vengeance, slicing one dude with his own luxury credit card and then taunting his bleeding victims with “I expect a five-star rating.” It takes him a scant 29 seconds to destroy the room full of rich snobs; he times it, naturally. The film somewhat confusingly toggles through various initial threads before landing on the main one — someone crucial to McCall’s

murky past is murdered in Brussels and that reveals a barrel of bad government apples. The film thus strays far from its roots as a vehicle for McCall to be the avenging angel for a needy stranger. But we get to see McCall solve the crime from his Boston apartment by putting himself in the crime scene like an episode of “Crossing Jordan” and then avenge the death. Oh, there’s also a hurricane crashing up the East coast, timed for the climax, a little over the top if we’re being honest. Fuqua is a lyrical director who directed Washington to an Oscar in “Training Day.” He’s not afraid to spend time in the still darkness with McCall and likes to focus on small moody elements, like rain hitting the gutters. But he can also deliver red meat: A sequence in which McCall fights off a passenger in the back seat of his car is a minimasterpiece of taut, sinewy direction. Wenk also has written some juicy dialogue for Washington, including a monologue about individual responsibility he delivers to the young artist in a project stairwell that the actor bites

into with obvious relish. (It’s only somewhat marred by the cliche of him putting a gun muzzle to his own temple and goading the younger man to pull the trigger. “Five pounds of pressure is all it takes!” he says.) “The Equalizer” is a guilty pleasure for anyone who enjoys that old-school, bluecollar American chivalric hero with a dark past. The one who was in “The Quiet Man” and behind the mask in Batman. He’s the kind of guy who cauterizes his own wounds, never permits collateral damage when he’s on a killing spree, wears a knit polo to a showdown with four heavily armed tactical fighters, and reads great books of literature to honor his beloved dead wife. He’s cool, with moral clarity and he’s three moves ahead of everyone. No wonder he’s such a welcome sight in 2018 America and no wonder Washington wanted another go-around. “The Equalizer 2,” a Columbia Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “brutal violence throughout, language and some drug content.” Running time: 120 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Peter Jackson’s WWI film to premiere at London Film Festival London (AP) — “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson’s new film — a documentary that transforms grainy footage from World War I into color — has a title and a world premiere date at the London Film Festival in October. The festival said that “They Shall Not Grow Old” will be screened in London and at cinemas across Britain on Oct. 16, less than a month before the centenary of the war’s end. The Academy Award-winning director restored film from the Imperial War Museum using cutting-edge digital technology and hand coloring, pairing it with

archive audio recollections from veterans of the conflict. Jackson said he wanted “to reach through the fog of time and pull these men into the modern world, so they can regain their humanity once more.” The film is part of the U.K. government-backed 14-18 Now project, which has presented works by more than 200 artists over four years to remember a conflict in which 20 million people died. “Slumdog Millionaire” director Danny Boyle — who helmed the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony — will create a mass-participation work to be performed on the anniversary of the Nov. 11, 1918, armistice that

“Widows,” and closes Oct. 21 with John S. Baird’s Laurel and Hardy biopic “Stan And Ollie.”

Kindred Spirit: ‘Phoenix Rising’

mott@pattayamail.com Kindred Spirit have been going in one form or another for more than ten years, so they are not exactly an overnight sensation, but they have paid their collective dues and now seem to be on the verge of breaking into the ‘big time’. They made various appearances at large festivals all over Europe in 2017 and this latest album, “Phoenix Rising”, their sixth, is a culmination of hard work and a burning desire to make an impact. The band are led by the incredibly talented Elaine Samuels who has a hand in writing all the songs as well as singing lead vocals and driving the band along on acoustic guitar. Her voice soars above the instruments in the band, sometimes with joy and at others with a haunting quiver. Now that the line-up of the band has become more

solidified, the individual members can all show their musical armory. The violin parts on “Phoenix Rising” were recorded by Gavin Jones, but since then his place has been taken by the latest member of the band, Martin Ash, whose fiddle playing either leads itself to the rhythm of the song or roars away, soloing to the very devil himself.

Catherine Dimmock’s talent on flute and saxophone is not to be underestimated and acts as a perfect foil to the violin, leading to many exciting and well constructed battles between them. Dimmock’s backing vocals also give the sound an extra dimension and when she is not available, Emily Nash seamlessly steps into the musical space. The driving rhythm section combines the bustling bass guitar runs of Mike Hislop

Kindred Spirit.

and the drumming of legendary skins man Les Binks (ex-Judas Priest). Now this is a line-up to be reckoned with and surely there will be no stopping this band. The music on the album, although each track follows a similar vein, is eclectic enough to give plenty of variety. From the poppy styling of “Life is a Circus” to the renaissance feeling of

final track on the album, “The Phoenix”, where the violin flies off in all directions at once, the harmonies are quite beautiful. There is a wonderful cover of America’s “Horse with No Name” plus a downright hard rocker with “Feed The Fire” while the reelin’ and a rockin’ get given full reign in the aptly titled “Drunken Landlady”.

The album is excellently produced by Jez Larder and the songs are played with a driving force that is required to bring the band success, with the musical expertise shining through on all the instruments. Of course there are comparisons to other bands, most notably to these ears to Curved Air and Jethro Tull, but that does not mean

that Kindred Spirit do not have their own unique sound, as indeed they do. I am sure that with their upwards journey to fame and fortune set as it is, 2018 will be the big breakthrough year these talented musicians. Mott the Dog rating: 5 Stars. More than 50 years into career, Rod Stewart not slowing down purposely went out to attract the opposite sex. I mean, it just comes with the music, you know, the music is very sensuous and vibrant. So, if I do something suggestive onstage it’s merely by accident. AP: The industry has changed. Is it no longer sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll? Stewart: Obviously, I’m not, you know, sweet 16 anymore, and there are things I have to preserve, namely my voice. I really have to look after that.

John Carucci New York (AP) — More than fifty years into his career, Rod Stewart shows no sign of slowing down. When he’s not on tour, he’s busy at home chasing his two young sons, Aiden and Alastair, around the yard. And on Sept. 28, he will release his 30th studio album, “Blood Red Roses.” While known for writing sultry songs — from “Tonight’s the Night (Gonna Be Alright)” to “You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)” — Stewart’s also not afraid to tackle social issues. In 1976, he broke new ground with “The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II),” about his friend who was killed because of his sexual identity. Stewart dismisses the idea of being courageous writing the first mainstream pop song to deal with gay bashing. “It was a true story and it’s much easier to write about the truth,” Stewart said about the iconic song. The 73-year old crooner gets serious again with his new album’s first single, “Didn’t I,” which deals with teenage substance abuse from the parent’s perspective. In an interview with The Associated Press, the Grammywinning singer discussed his longevity in the music business, what he thinks of the #MeToo movement and

maintaining his signature hairstyle. AP: That hair is just amazing. How do you keep it up? Stewart: It’s pretty good, isn’t it? I don’t know. I think I’ve just been lucky, you know, with the hair. It gets a lot of manipulation, you know, because I always have to keep it (up). When I’m doing a show, I have to go and dry it. ...I cut it every two weeks. No, but other than that I just think I’m lucky. AP: You move pretty well onstage for a guy in his seventies...

Stewart: Soccer has always been a passion of mine. You know, I played it, read about it, watched it all my life, and I still play a little bit. And I do work out a lot, I must admit. And that keeps me fit for onstage. How long can I go on? That’s the million-dollar question. You know, I enjoy it. I get excited about it, and as long as that exists, I think I can carry on for another three weeks (laughs). AP: You’ve always been a fan of the ladies, do you consider yourself a sex symbol? Stewart: Sex symbol? Now I hate that word. ..I never

So, as I said, I was never really a druggy-type person because I played football and I was always getting up in the morning playing football and so that side hasn’t changed a great deal for me. AP: But things are changing, especially with the #MeToo movement. Stewart: Well that’s true. There were a lot of women throwing themselves at us in the ’70s and ’80s, and they were good old times, really great times. But, you know, the #MeToo

movement is long overdue. But I must admit I’ve never had trouble, you know, entertaining women. I’ve always enjoyed the chase, actually. I’d never thrown myself on any woman. You know, I enjoyed romance and then the chase. AP: Do you ever look back and go, “Wow, what a career?” Stewart: Every day. Every day. I never take it for granted. I really don’t. You know, it’s just the best job in the world. I know that’s an old cliche, but it really is.

Ted Anthony “Hope I die before I get old,” the Who sang at Woodstock as the 1960s hurtled to their end. Indeed, the decade and its echoes made premature legends of so many - Kennedy to King, Hendrix to Joplin to Morrison. They became emblems of an era, and the packaging of their virtues and vices has never really stopped.

by the decade that reshaped so much of American life but propelled into the 1970s and all the way to 2018, carrying some of the fundamental storylines of the 1960s as they progressed forward. Think of the most dominant, most kinetic narratives of the 60s, the fiery combustion engines that drove the decade: From race, gender and music (Franklin) to war and politics (McCain), they are contained in the two figures to whom we bid farewell this past week.

At a juncture like this, faced with this pair of memorials of a man and woman so very different and yet so uniquely representative of the American experience, what better time to stop and think about such figures, about what they meant and mean? Sure, we’re doing that. But are we doing it effectively?

In the past few days, the American packaging machine has pulled these two lives into slick renditions of who they actually were. Video montages, photo slide shows, memories and even the pleasingly compact monikers we throw around - the “Queen of Soul” and the “Maverick” are sweet and nostalgic, yes.

But then there were those who didn’t die, who did get old and emerged from that crucible and carried themselves through the arc of a life unabbreviated. They moved across decades and changes and navigated a culture that their younger selves would not have recognized. That’s the crossroads where both Aretha Franklin and John McCain stood - shaped

They exit the stage together in an American moment not unlike the period when each emerged. Fifty years after the cataclysmic year of 1968, today we are in a similar period of upheaval and polarization - a time when American society’s foundational pillars are being questioned and people of all political persuasions are deeply angry and uncertain about the nation’s path.

But they tend to reduce whole lifetimes to their clichéd sharpest edges: the most popular hit songs, the most pointed quotes, the most outsized moments. The United States is often accused of being an ahistorical nation, and these fragmentary, Twitter-feed-like glimpses of entire lives make that assertion easier to prove. Sort of like we’ve come to view the 1960s themselves through the prism of reductive, Halloween-party buzzwords like “flower children,” ‘’sit-in” and “Summer of Love.” “If there were ever a moment for us to talk and sit down and reflect about who we are, where we came from and where we’re going, this weekend should give us that moment,” says Ron Pitcock, assistant dean of the John V. Roach Honors College at Texas Christian University, who teaches about American cultural memory. “We need to not compartmentalize these two people into these convenient narratives,” he says. “We have two giants who waded through these muddy waters for us. If we settle for just making them an icon or giving them celebrity, then we’ve completely failed in this moment of reflection.”

The places where those muddy waters flowed were sometimes even muddier. Since the 1960s, the country has only gotten more complicated and, many believe, even more fraught. Trust in government sits near historic lows after beginning to plummet around the time that Franklin’s voice started becoming a household sound and McCain was enduring his years in North Vietnamese custody. Music, delivered on vinyl discs for Franklin’s first recordings, is

now more typically served up in bits and bytes. And the stories of race and gender in America remain raw, ragged and aggressively unresolved. What’s illuminating about McCain and Franklin, in the context of the formative eras and experiences that produced them, is this: Each navigated historical currents - rode them, you might even argue - and each figured out how to remain relevant and impactful on their communities. Lives of high drama, yes, but staying power, too. “Years matter. The people from the ’60s who end up shaping America were often the ones that lasted. Ted

Kennedy shaped America much more than John F. Kennedy,” says John Baick, a historian at Western New England University. “So many figures from the ’60s are caricatures of themselves,” he says. “Aretha Franklin and John McCain didn’t talk about the good old days. They wanted to bring the past into the present. They were living reminders.” The very youngest Baby Boomers are in their mid-50s now - despite the exhortation to never trust anyone over 30 - and more than half of today’s Americans have no

living memory of the 1960s. When personal experience ebbs, myth fills in the mortar between the bricks. But those who were shaped by the decade continue to influence it, both alive and dead. Sales of Franklin’s music on the day after her death increased by more than 1,500 percent, Billboard Magazine reported. “Music changes, and I’m gonna change right along with it,” Franklin once said or, at least, is widely quoted as saying. The 1960s were a time of great and lurching change. Those who made it

through often had to change again and again - continuously, even. She did. He did. That might be the ultimate echo of that long-ago decade that Aretha Franklin and John McCain leave us with this week. Looking past all else, the main story of the 1960s was change - causing it, managing it, figuring out how to live with it. We’re still not anywhere near where we need to be with that, as American politics today so clearly demonstrate. In that respect, the lives of these two - and similar figures who survive them - hold clues still to be uncovered. (AP Essay)

Pattaya Ganesh festival begins Sept. 7

At a recent event, worshippers prepare to immerse Ganesh images made of Plaster of Paris into the sea, symbolizing a ritual send-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees.

Keng Na Songkhla Hindu and Buddhists again are celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in Pattaya with an eight-day festival that kicks off today, Sept. 7, and will culminate in the immersion of idols representing the “God of Success” in the sea to fete the son of supreme deity Shiva. Chaiwat Dechnatee, president of the Pattaya Ganesh Lovers Club, announced details of the annual festival Aug. 31. The celebration begins at Central Festival Marina Sept. 7 with the finale set for September 13 Bali Hai Pier. Members of the club will take the Ganesh statue from Central Festival Marina to around the city in the morning on September

7. Throughout the week, people can come in the evening to pay respect with pure milk, coconut water, or water to shower the statue at the Central Festival Marina. The main event takes place on September 13, the birthday of Ganesh. Worshipers will take the statue to the sea at Bali Hai pier in a ceremony lasting from 18.59 to 21.00. The festival is Thailand’s largest of its kind. Past activities include fireworks, liturgy prayer ceremony, Ganesha head-covering ceremony, fire worship and exhibition of more than 2,000 Ganesha figurines. The centerpiece of the event, however, is the ritual immersion of Ganesha images made of Plaster of Paris into the sea, symbolizing a

ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees. The event is typically well attended, as Ganesh is among the most-transcendent of Hindu gods, worshipped throughout western and southeast Asia. In India, he is revered not only as a remover of obstacles, but a “god for everyman” and the “lord of beginnings.” In Thailand, Buddhists recognize him as the “god of success,” appearing in Mahayana Buddhism texts in the form of the Buddhist god Vinayaka as well as a Hindu demon form with the same name. For more information contact the club on 083-0934703 or 0813579879.

Bangkok Hospital Pattaya gave raincoats to officers at Banglamung Police Station for the rainy season. Business development director Jutaporn Huyakorn presented the 10,000 coats worth 3,000 baht to Pol. Lt. Col. Thanasit Kanlum Aug. 29. The jackets, funded in part by the Thai Health Insurance Office, are intended for use by traffic police, who have to be out in awful weather to direct traffic at busy intersections, near schools and in rain-flooded areas.

Pattaya cleans up after garbage tide Warapun Jaikusol Sanitation workers were deployed to clean up after a tide of garbage washed up on Pattaya Beach. Stormy seas dumped snack bags, rope, and plastic and foam containers across the sand near the Dusit curve Sept. 1. Beach vendors notified city hall, who dispatched clean-up crews.

Pattaya tells Lan Po vendors to drop foam boxes Pattaya City Hall is taking its “no plastic, no foam” campaign on the road. Two days after meeting with civil servants and public school officials, telling them to drop foam food containers and adopt bags and boxes made of biodegradable materials, Environment Department staffers visited the Lan Po Market to deliver the same message to vendors there. The workers also organized a park and market cleanup and vendors to do a better job of keeping their area cleaner. (PPRD)

Makeshift dumpsite cleared again

Workers used heavy machinery and hand tools to remove furniture, construction scraps and garbage illegally dumped on the side of the road.

Warapun Jaikusol A makeshift dump that appeared along Thepprasit Soi 7 has been cleaned up by city hall. Sanitation chief Sanya Tubtimsri led a work crew to

the wooded area along the Jomtien Beach street Aug. 31. Ten workers used heavy machinery and hand tools to remove furniture, construction scraps and garbage illegally dumped there. While they were in the

neighborhood, the workers also trimmed branches and cleared brush to discourage dumpers. It’s not the first time the area has become a trash dump. Work crews did the same job earlier this year.

Bedevilment of Brexit Editor; Can you imagine Thailand deciding to leave ASEAN? The insane decision for Britain to leave the EU was an incomparably worse one and I appeal to all British expats living in this country to sign the petition for a second referendum. The reasons for this are that the first referendum restricted the choice between Leave or Remain and those who voted to leave were given no choice of what sort of divorce they wanted. Write to the Editor:

Many of them did not realise the negative, devastating effects their votes would have. The enormous devaluation of the pound is just one of numerous very serious consequences. A few of the other reasons include the lie that there would be more money for the NHS whereas it is in fact already causing havoc to the service. Many elderly voters who were predominantly pro Brexit have since departed and the 16 and 17 yrs age groups had no vote although they will be the

most affected by the outcome. We know that the 18-21 age group was overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the UK so there is no reason to believe that their younger peers would be any different. Many expats were disenfranchised but at least there is now a chance to sign this petition. If any British citizen wishes to sign the petition it can be found on ‘People’s Vote Campaign’. Cassa finally gets chance to celebrate PSC Golf from The Growling Swan Monday, August 27 Mt Shadow Stableford Nineteen golfers departed the Growling Swan a little earlier than the 8.30 departure time that was scheduled, and

surprisingly all golfers were saddled up and ready to go! Firstly, let me remind all players that once your name goes down on the start sheet, that remains the order of play! If one of your group pulls out or fails to turn up,

please don’t ask me to place your threesome in front of all other players! In saying that, the “Captain of the day” or the groups involved have the discretion to make changes as he sees fit, once at the course.

Sandy and Poopay stand tall on medal podium PSC Golf from the Billabong Golf Bar Wednesday, August 29th Green Valley - Haven Monthly Medal As usual, the Haven Monthly Medal is well supported and today was no exception. 44 golfers turned up to support this event which has been sponsored by Brian Chapman, for many years now, and runs Haven Consultants (Financial Advisors) in Nernplabwan. It is said that a medal round is a true measure of one’s ability and one bad hole can determine whether you stand on the podium or not. It does not help when one person, who will remain nameless, had a 10 on the first hole and used a hand wedge to extricate himself from a bunker. In the ladies, Miss Poopay, always competitive in a medal, had 8 pars and one birdie to lead the way with a net 71. Miss Eng would have challenged Miss Poopay but for 4 double bogies on the back nine just edging out Miss Sasicha on the same score relegating her to third place. In the men’s Micky Beresford, who shook off the cobwebs from a hard grind of 4 weeks offshore, to improve on his first nine holes of 47 by 7 shots which included 4 pars and 1 birdie for a net 74 and 4th place. Pete Thomas occupied 3rd place with a net 73 with four pars and 1 birdie on the way back to the clubhouse but 4 shots behind 2nd placed Brian Wilkinson who had a double bogey seven and an eight for a respectable net 69. Sandy Chap, who is becoming a regular visitor to the podium recently, despite 2 sevens in his round took the plaudits with a net 68. The twos today went to Lloyd Shuttleworth, Miss Nu, Miss Eng and Miss Prae.

Monday, August 27 Phoenix CC, Stableford Just a small field today at Phoenix playing our favourite two nines: the Lake and Ocean loops. The course has had some rain in recent days but is in great condition and a pleasure to play. It was a good day for golf with high clouds and perfect temperature. The greens were not as swift as usual but still ok to putt on. The scoring was in general very good with the little French General taking 3rd spot with a fine 33 points, coming in in second place was Sandy Chapo playing to his handicap scoring 36 points, and taking the top spot was the Lovely Sasicha for the second time in a row with 41 points. There were two 2s coming from Sasicha and Bill Marsden.

Brian Chapman (back) poses with the women winners on the day, Eng, Poopay, and Sasicha.

Friday, August 31 Phoenix CC, Monthly Scramble The monthly scramble at Phoenix was a great day as usual with 11 teams participating. After an early start with an orderly fashion, teams played the Mountain and Ocean loops, which were in great condition with greens that were fast and true. At the bar after it was the usual comments about how many birdies were left out there but it certainly was a grand day out. It was good to see some new faces on the podium, well not new but not seen for some time. The Billabong A team came 3rd with 57 net. The team from the Courtyard Geoff Couch made up of Helmut Hebstriet, Jeff North and Chris Brendle, came 2nd with a score of 56.3 only being beaten by one tenth of a shot by the team from the player’s lounge, Micky Beresford, Eddie Beilby, Barry Tregurther and Gareth Gill with a score of 56.2. It was good to see some of the faces that have been playing this event at the Billabong from the start coming to the podium. The Courtyard lad’s used to have the trophy stuck to them but haven’t been at the top for a while. Great to see you back fellas.

(L to R) Alan Sanders, Stu Casa Rifkin, Lorraine Percy, Rudy Regenass, Keith Buchanan and Steve Younger.

The weather was overcast for most of the day which made for pleasant playing conditions and despite overnight rain, carts were allowed on the fairways. The white tees were selected and lift clean and place on the fairways was implemented for the day. Once again, it was the tricky greens at Mt Shadow that played a major part in restricting high scoring in today’s round. Two points separated six players and the count back was needed to determine second, third and fourth podiums. Missing out were Lorraine Percy and the Colonel (Alan Sanders) both on 35 points. Ruuuuudy Regenass took out 4th spot, Keith Kissy Buchanan 3rd, runner up was Steve slugger Younger all with 36 points, whilst Stu Cassa Rifkin to the sound of many boos, took out first place with 37 points, compliments of his 19 handicap! (Soon to be amended)

Thursday, August 30 Pleasant Valley G.C. - Stroke “It was the Inspector that took The Mug – Patrick Poussier.” Must be something about Mug Day. With a 10am tee time, all golfers arrived and were waiting to leave well in advance of our departure time. Two buses and a couple of cars were to make the journey. Twenty four starters ensured that we were to play 2 flights. Numbers are creeping up which is good for us “Outlets”. Pleasant Valley was today’s destination and with B650 G/F vouchers it made this the ideal venture for today’s golf! The course was in great nick, and one would think that the scores reflected this. Weather played on the golfers’ side of things with the first half of the day’s play enjoying the comfort of a cool breeze rarely seen or felt on any course these days. After some discussions the marshal sent us from the tenth and we took the course on from the white tees. We played two flights (as numbers were there for us) A Flight was 0 to 21 and B Flight was 22 plus. First time for a while A was getting thru with such a high handicap.

Of course all novelties were in play! A Flight saw Buffalo Bill Stienmann and Alex “Field of Dreams” (one of my all time fav movies) go to the count back with Buffalo taking the day’s honors with a better back nine. Coming in third and filling the podium was Denis Steele; you can’t keep him far from the money! B Flight saw today’s “Take it Easy” Mug winner emerge. Patrick Poussier busted thru the pack with a very good net 68 for the round. But, not to be outdone was his playing partner Gordon Clegg who was only one shot from the pace. Those couple days of rest from golf definitely helped you mate! Filling our third spot on the podium was the ever reliable Wan Makmul. Be careful Dick, she is close to getting that name right! All in all it was a good day of golf carried out at a good course in good conditions. Results for Pleasant Valley A Flight 0 to 21 1st Bill Stienmann 12) 69 net. 2nd Alex Field 18) 69 net. 3rd Denis Steele 15) 70 net. B Flight 22 plus 1st Patrick Poussier 30) 68 net. 2nd Gordon Clegg 25) 69 net. 3rd Wan Makmul 24) 73 net. Near the pins: 5th Steve Younger, 8th Martin Todd, 13th Brad Todd, and 17th Chris Stewart. Long first putt: 9th Chris Stewart and 18th Allan Nolan. It was great to see so many of The Novelties went straight into D-For! Back at the Swan we welcomed back “Buffalo” Bill Stienmann and the lovely Yarnni having her first hit with us! We then said goodbye to Keith Buchanan, John Coetzee & Ronald J Gillett esq. Safe travel boys hope to see you soon! Alex set resident charity hound D-For from his chain and gratefully received donations from the players and punters, they are all thanked for their continued contributions. D-For is renowned for his charity collection, and continues to do a great job!

Arataki earns first Green Jacket Pattaya Links Golf Society Wed, August 29 Bangpakong, Stableford The Pattaya Links Golf Society visited Bangpakong Riverside on Wednesday, 29th August with twenty golfers champing at the bit at the opportunity to play the sumptuous course on the banks of the Bangpakong River on the outskirts of Bangkok. As always, the course was in splendid condition with well grassed fairways, well-tended bunkers and very consistent greens. A restriction on the use of carts invoked the preferred lies local competition rule on the fairways but, in reality, it was hardly used. Such was the quality.

In the single flight Barry Oats, playing from the senior tees, managed 35 points for fourth place, narrowly losing on countback to third placed golfer Maurice Roberts, also with 35 points. Second place was taken by Wayne Peppernell with a fine 37 points. That’s where the Aussie involvement ended as England’s Dave Arataki took control with an excellent 39 points, including a brace of very adjacent near-pins, on the fourth and sixteenth holes. It has often been noticed that winning the “wig” has a positive effect on a golfer’s performance and an unassuming Dave made the point again today after

securing his first green jacket with a very competent round of golf. Other near pins went to Michael Wright (7) and Phil Davies (13).

Bob St Aubin shoots game of his life IPGC Golf from The Tara Court McArdle (16) kept up his good form since returning from Ireland & had 34 pts for a clear 2nd place. Much to their surprise the minor placings were 3rd Kevyn Wright (11) 31 pts & Russell Gilroy (16) 30 pts. Jerry added to his winning by having the only 2 today.

Sunday, August 26 Green Valley Stableford We had what was probably our best golf ever here in Green Valley today. We also had our largest group in a while as some of our friends are already starting to come back. We were lucky with the weather today as our last group had just finished and got into the clubhouse when the skies opened and as our best scores came from that group it would have been a shame if they had been washed out. Actually for our winner it wouldn’t have mattered as he had already enough points accumulated after sixteen holes to have won the competition anyway! This was Bob St Aubin who had the game of his life and he scored a massive forty five points which was I think our best score ever and he came out the winner by a clear six points. Well done Bob, now you will get your wish and get your handicap well reduced which I know will make you happy. Stuart Brown had thirty nine points, a score which would normally win here but today it was only good enough for a distant second in the A Flight. Jerry Sweetnam also played very well to score thirty eight points and he came third but as he had the only two of the day he walked away with the most money. Michael Hughes also had thirty eight but lost out of the money on the countback. The scoring wasn’t quite as good in the B Flight but it was still ok and here Bernie Stafford was the winner with

We had two players with thirty three and here Joe McArdle won the countback to come third and Russell Gilroy lost it and didn’t make the prizes today. Tuesday, August 28 Eastern Star Stableford 11 players took the test that is Eastern Star, The weather was overcast & a bit of a breeze made for good playing conditions. The course is in good shape at the moment. Once again the course kept most players scratching their heads on how to put a decent score on the cards. Jerry Sweetnam (10) is playing very good golf at the moment and easily took 1st place with a fine 37 pts. Joe

Back in Burapha today where we again played the unusual combination of the A and C nines. We had a very high standard of golf today with even some scoring thirty eight points but not getting in the prizes. Bernie Stafford had been burning it up on the front nine with twenty three points but he let it slip a bit on the back with only fifteen which meant that he lost out on the countback and he got no money today. We had two more players with thirty eight, Pete Seil had twenty on the front and eighteen on the back but as he had only thirteen on the last six holes, he only got the fourth place but at least he had the consolation of having a two. Donal McGuigan’s fourteen points on the last six meant that he won the countback to take the third place. We then had two players with thirty nine points and here Serge Stratten lost the countback to earn second place. Lyle Blaw won it and came out the winner. 1st Lyle Blaw 12, 39 pts. 2nd Serge Stratten 20, 39 pts. 3rd Donal McGuigan 18, 38 pts. 4th Pete Seil 7, 38 pts. 2’s Pete Seil and Ted Morris, one each.

The consolation awards went to Ian Wilson (best front nine, 18 points) and Chris Barker’s best back nine of 18 points also. Ralph McConnell, smiles all round, had the honour of the “wig” after a best forgotten round and Paul Chesney, green jacket winner only three weeks ago, celebrated his final nine holes this trip with the “silly hat” award. Skill is not the only highlight of a golf day at the Links, fun predominates as well! Winner Dave Arataki (29) 39 pts

The Pattaya Links Golf Society road show ended the week at Emerald in clear and breezy conditions. The course was well prepared but the rains had made the rough very challenging and an impediment to good scoring. Eighteen golfers started on time on an almost empty course. Ban Chang, has it lost its historic attraction? Golf is another matter, however, and the scores reflected the conditions with fourth place going to American golfer Ed Karvois, the field’s low marker, playing off 8 who returned a score of 34 points. One point ahead with 35 was John Harrison, losing second place to Swiss golfer Marco Beer on countback.

The winner with a level par round was Kevin LaBar on 36 points. Near pins went to Dave Arataki (5), Mike Tottenham (7), Masa Sugaya (13) and Ed Karvois (15) The best nines glory went to Wayne Peppernell (front,) and Michael Wright (back). Other consolation awards went to Masayuki Okada, with the honour of the “wig” for his second consecutive appearance, and Chris Barker’s shabby back nine guaranteed him the “silly hat” award for the poorest nine hole score. Winner Kevin LaBar (13) 36 pts 2nd Place Marco Beer (17) 35 pts c/back 3rd Place John Harrison (14) 35 pts 4th Place Ed Karvois (8) 34 pts Best Front Nine (non winners) Wayne Peppernell 18 pts Best Back Nine (non winners) Michael Wright 20 pts All the golfers enjoyed the day and looked forward to a few days rest before tackling Laem Chabang again the next time out after the weekend.

Harry Vincenzi aces Plutaluang #3 The Jomtien Golf Society in the twos. He was a happy chappy and no twos today in either division so a single rollover in each division to Pattavia on Monday.

Monday, August 27 Plutaluang - Stableford The Jomtien Golf Society played the North and West nines today with the cut in the two divisions at 11-19 and 20+. There were some tough pin placings out there and with some very slick greens; this was could be why there was only one score over 30 points. Harry Vincenzi won Division 1 with 37, with Nik Evans in second place on 30 and Paul Young third with 29. Curtis Hessler with 30 points won Division 2 and Bill Kana beat Ray Kingwell 18/14 on a back nine countback after they both came in with 29 points. Nearest the pins: Div 1. Marc Brunner (2) and Nik Evans (2). Div 2. Bill Kana, John Seton and Harry Vincenzi. There were 10 rollovers in Division 1 and two in Division 2. On the west par three 3rd Harry Vincenzi hit a six iron off the tee from 151 yards with a slight right to left curve, onto the green and a 10ft roll which dropped into the hole, his first hole in one. Congratulations Harry.

nines at Khao Kheow, but with only one division out. Neil Gamble’s 35 points was the best of the day, Willy Van Heetvelde came in second beating Paul Butler on a 17/ 16 countback after they both score 34. In fourth place was Alan Bissell with 30 points beating Frank Grainger on a 14/12 back nine countback. Nobody landed their tee shot on the A3 green in either division, but on B8 Neil Gamble and Willy Van Heetvelde did for nearest the pins in both divisions. After Harry’s hole in one on Monday there were no rollovers left in either division

The clubhouse is still under renovation, refurbishment for the men’s locker rooms was supposed to be completed for today but the answer now is next month, which is tomorrow. Who knows, this is Thailand. Two divisions out with a cut of 7-18 and 19+ and as always in the frame Paul Butler won Division 1 with 36 points. Colin Aspinall came in second two points behind Paul, and a warm welcome return to Per Forsberg who finished third with 31 points. Tony Thorne won Division 2 with 33 points. David Phillips came second on 31 and John Doyle was third, beating John Seton on a countback of 13/11 after they both came in with 29 points. There were some very slick greens out there, not what we were used to. Near Pins: Div 1. Paul Butler (2) and Gareth Piccininn (2). Div 2. Douglas Clark, John Seton and David Phillips. There were no twos in either division, so four rollovers in Division 1 and two in Division 2 next Friday.

Parish and Van Dyk vie for the Royal Crown PSC Golf from Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, August 28 Royal Lakeside – St As seems to be a regular occurrence of late, a week after playing at Bangpakong Riverside we are headed back to the area for a day out at Royal Lakeside. No matter, all good as these two courses are consistently in fantastic condition and a joy to play. So with one of the regular organizers traveling and the other in the sick bed, it was up to our faithful stand-in Brian to handle the group this day. After several rounds at these two Bangpakong River area courses, where the scoring is always on the high side, we had decided to give the “Blue” tees a shot at both and see how the Tropical Golfers faired at the longer distances. Last week at BRCC they did well with a couple beating their handicap and several closely following. Just how would they fair this week at a course they demolished in Medal play last month with all podium finishers scoring between

net 64 and net 68! On the card the “Blues” here are 400 yards longer than the “Whites”, so off we went to test our golfing skills and course management. As usual the course was presented in excellent condition; good grass under the ball in the fairways, maintained bunkers, and greens running true at a reasonable speed. It was decided to play ‘Lift, Clean, & Place” due to a bit of light rain as play started and better to be safe than sorry this time of the year. However, the shower quickly dissipated and, under intermittent clouds along with a slight breeze, the weather was perfect. The pace of play was a bit on the slow side as a 6 – Ball had teed off before our groups; however, since most of our group were walking, what ended up being a 5 hours round was not all that bad. After all we did have to walk further back to the Blues just to get each hole started. On top of that it seemed the grounds crew had placed

place behind the winner on the day, Brian Parish (13). Have to say the course was the winner this day off the Blues; however, congratulations to all for standing up to the challenges the longer course at Royal Lakeside had to offer. We shall return.

Friday, August 31 Crystal Bay B/C – Medal Monthly Medal Mug sponsor Bill Jones & Bailey congratulate Frank Xin.

the Blue markers about as far back as they could on this day! Several holes that on the card should have been 15 – 20 yards longer were definitely 30 – 40 yards longer, so a long course longer, but with all playing off their calculated Course Handicap, would the group or the course win the day. Round over, showered, cards collected, and back to Pattaya to the friendly confines of “The BJ Holiday Lodge” for a bite and a sip and the presentation.

Count-backs were the order for the day for all the podium steps: finishing with 30 points, John Davis (12) edged out Walter Baechli for 5th place followed by Mashi Kaneta (16) over John Pierrel (13) for 3rd and 4th, both on 31 points. For the top spot the count-back on 34 points had to go to “hole-by-hole” from the 18th down to the 15th to determine the winner. Getting edged out by the slimmest of margins was Andre Van Dyk (17) for 2nd

Always one of the highlights for the Tropical Golfers, the Monthly Medal Mug is up for grabs. It’s easy to grab because it’s a nice mug with a big handle, but hard to win. This Friday fifteen golfers decided to give it a try... some for their first trophy, others hoping for bookends or a full collection. Forgiving Crystal Bay was on the agenda, giving everyone a good shot. Assigned the B + C nines (will A ever re-open?), we were able to tee off a bit early in breezy conditions. The course was in overall good condition given the price. A bit weedy in places, but playable.

One thing that confused many golfers was the quite slick and sloped B-side greens, and just as we were getting used to it, the C-side did an about-face and went to quite slow. Well, proper golfers don’t complain but just accept what the course hands you and tend to business. Stableford scores usually tend to be a bit high at CB, but today the stroke competition tempered things, as it usually does. Results: The only one to break handicap, and winning his first Monthly Mug, Frank Xin (h/c 26) took proud honors with his net 68. Beverages do taste better when sipped (or gulped) from The Mug, right Frank? Next, Takeshi Hakozaki (12) used his home course knowledge to win a multicountback at net 73 over John Davis (10) and Paul Sharples (15). John Pierrel (11) was next in line with net 75, and Brian Parish (11) was surprised to get the final mention with a good enough net 78. Cheers!

Toshi rings the bell Traveller’s Rest Golf Group Monday, August 27 Emerald, Stableford We started the week off at Emerald, which is one of the TRGG’s favourite courses. Joining us today after an extended absence was a very popular Mr Toshi Aoki. Toshi only managed to score 33 points but beat both 2nd and 3rd place opponents by virtue of count backs. His popularity reached new heights when one of the girls persuaded him to ring the bell. Toshi has a very

limited knowledge of the English language and thought it was a “Victory Celebration” until he was surrounded by a dozen very appreciative young ladies and everyone in the bar toasting his health! Tuesday’s venue was Green Valley and out of the three courses at the Barcelona complex, it’s in the best condition by far. Taking full advantage of the course conditions was Paul Sharples who set up his win with a solid nineteen points on the front nine and kept it going on the back to finish with a respectable 37 points. Paul has been knocking on the door of a win since September 2017 and finally broke through for the first time in almost a year to claim the number one spot. Friday at Burapha and it was time to draw the curtains on the Toshi and Paul show. Doing it in style and posting the best score of the week was the handsome, debonair, and extremely charming Mr Colin Smith who for the benefit of any ladies reading this report, is also single. Colin’s 41 points rocketed him to out and out favourite to win the Hua Hin King of the Mountain tour and the 2018 Player of the Year award. What a catch girls! Division 1 1st Colin Smith (13) 41 points 2nd Greg Bates (15) 40 points 3rd Richard Keenan (19) 37 points Saturday and for the third time this week we were once again negotiating the 331, this time we turned off early to take the leisurely drive through the pineapple plantations to arrive at Pattavia. It was Mitch Ikeda who posted the best score of the day, negotiating the lightening quick greens with consummate ease to finish with a score of 38 points and claim his third win in two weeks.

Wednesday, August 29 Greenwood, TRGGFerdinand Cup Wednesday we headed up the 331 to Greenwood which played host to our monthly TRGG-Ferdinand Cup competition. This competition is a stroke event with the monthly winners receiving double prize money, plus they qualify to compete in the final playoffs at the end of the year for a 15,000 baht first prize.

Toshi Aoki.

Today’s newest qualifier was our very own “Ring the Bell” Mr Toshi Aoki who scored an amazing net 68 points and went on to record his second first place finish in just three days. Toshi sat as far away as possible from the bell and no amount of seductive coercion by the girls could convince him to go anywhere near it! Thursday, August 30 Pattana, Stableford On Thursday we travelled

back up the 331; however, this time we were headed for Pattana. Paul Sharples who having broken his drought on Tuesday and was full of confidence, literally took the course apart. With his new handicap of 14 he shot twenty points on each nine and finished the day with an unassailable 40 points. Being a “Lefty” he was quick to point out that the reason most golfers struggle with their game is that they are holding the club the wrong way? A total of over sixty golfers took part in the game at Laem Chabang in a round that was painfully slow taking over five hours to complete. The course was as you would expect from this prestigious venue, difficult for most, made more so by a stiff breeze even though temperatures remained high. Sadly the Bunker Boys didn’t acquit themselves too well with our top scorer Paul Lanzetta shooting thirtythree points to stay outside the winning group. The only

Some very fine food in the form of a free buffet was available at Colin’s Bar prior to the presentation of prizes. In Plutaluang the top score was a bit better with Tony Robbins taking the chocolates on thirty-five points. DeChambeau makes it 2 straight wins in FedEx Cup playoffs Doug Ferguson Norton, Mass. (AP) Bryson DeChambeau plays golf differently from everyone else and is getting the results everyone wants. It doesn’t take a scientist to figure that out. For the second straight week in the richest part of the PGA Tour season, DeChambeau took down one of the strongest fields of the year by playing his best golf on the weekend to win the Dell Technologies Championship, becoming only the second player to capture the opening two playoff events in the FedEx Cup. He closed with a 4-under 67 on Monday, making three straight birdies to close out the front nine and keeping his distance the rest of the way for a two-shot victory over Justin Rose on the TPC Boston. “I wouldn’t have written it any better, to be honest with you,” DeChambeau said. “I’ve been playing some great golf this whole year. And I knew it was a matter of time before something cool showed up.” Vijay Singh won the opening two FedEx Cup events in 2008, when the points system was different and points were not reset before

the final playoff event. That allowed Singh to effectively wrap up the $10 million prize early. DeChambeau, with his third victory this year, was assured of being the No. 1 seed when he gets to the Tour Championship, no matter

From page 36 Raikkonen pitted from the lead at the end of lap 20 and came out fourth, behind Hamilton, his Mercedes teammate Bottas and Verstappen. Hamilton waited until the end of lap 28 to come in for fresh tires, handing the lead to Bottas who was ahead of a charging Raikkonen. Hamilton emerged third and with his teammate holding

up Raikkonen, the British driver was able to close the gap. When Bottas eventually pitted at the end of lap 36, the fight was on, with Raikkonen holding a one-second advantage over Hamilton. A few laps later Hamilton struck, coming around the outside of Raikkonen on turn one at the end of the straight to overtake the Finn and never looked back. Behind them there was a

scrap for third place culminating at the first chicane when Verstappen appeared to move into Bottas, forcing the Finnish driver onto an escape road. Verstappen was furious when he was told he had been given a five-second penalty for his role in the incident on team radio, swearing and adding: “They’re doing a great job of killing racing, honestly.”

to fill out the team, and no one has been close to DeChambeau over the last two weeks. The 24-year-old Californian is known as the “Mad Scientist” for his approach to the game, from his singlelength clubs (34 inches, roughly the length of a 7iron), to his work on biomechanics to the calculations that go into every shot. Nine calculations, to be exact. DeChambeau doesn’t want to give away all his secrets, but they range from yardage and wind to air pressure and adrenaline. “He’s facing the biggest and best fields,” Rose said. “There’s a lot of conjecture about how he goes about it. But when he delivers as he is now, it just proves it.” How much better can he get? “You can always get better,” DeChambeau said. “How much? I would say it

depends on what I can do in the restrictions of my biomechanics. So it’s all about error tolerances and being ... less sensitive to error. So that when you do feel like you mess up, it’s not going to be that big of a mess-up. I hope that makes sense. “But I can say there is another level.” DeChambeau, who started the year at No. 99 in the world, moved to No. 7, one spot past Rory McIlroy. He finished at 16-under 268 and made $1,620,000 for the second straight week. Starting the final round one shot behind Abraham Ancer, and among 10 players within four shots of the lead, DeChambeau had a two-putt birdie from 50 feet on No. 7, took the lead with a 12-foot birdie putt on the 220-yard eighth hole, and then hit his approach to 6 feet to a back

right pin at No. 9 for his third straight birdie. Cameron Smith of Australia tried to make a run at him with a pair of late birdies, but DeChambeau answered with a birdie on No. 15 to keep his lead at two shots. Needing an eagle to catch him on the par-5 18th, Smith came up short and into the hazard and made bogey. Rose birdied three of his last four holes for a 68 and wound up alone in second. Ancer couldn’t keep pace, dropping three shots in the tough four-hole stretch early on the back nine. The 27year-old Mexican hit into hazard on the 18th and finished with a bogey for a 73. The small consolation for Ancer was moving from No. 92 to No. 56, which at least made him among the top 70 who advance to the BMW Championship at Aronimink.

Marina Alex rallies to win Cambia Portland Classic Portland, Ore. (AP) - Marina Alex rallied to win the Cambia Portland Classic for her first LPGA Tour title, closing with a 7-under 65 on Sunday for a four-stroke victory over Georgia Hall. Alex birdied the final five holes in a front-nine 30 to take the lead and added birdies on the par-5 12th and par4 15th at tree-lined Columbia Edgewater. The 28-year-old former Vanderbilt star made her only bogey of the day on the par-4 18th, leaving her at 19-under 269. “My goal was 8 under to give myself a chance, but I even thought maybe that wouldn’t have been good enough,” Alex said. “It was just an incredible day. I’m proud.” She didn’t look at a leaderboard until the final hole. “I was trying purposefully not to look at the leaderboard because I think sometimes it just gets me a little stressed out,” Alex said. “I get anxious, and then I think, ‘Oh, I have a lead, I need to protect it.’ “I kind of just pretended all day that I was behind and that I needed to play catchup. I think it really helped me just play my best. I didn’t know I had a four-shot lead until basically the third shot - no, after the third shot - into the green here on 18.” The New Jersey player gave caddie Travis Wilson his second straight victory in the event. Wilson is teaming with Alex with regular boss Stacy Lewis preparing for the birth of her first child. “He’s such a wonderful guy,” Alex said. “He has such a calm demeanor about him, and it definitely helped

me relax. We had so much fun the past three weeks.” Wilson spent three weeks with Alex. “I’m so happy for her,” Wilson said. “She’s a great girl. She works hard. She’s been close a number of times, and to be the guy that gets her through to get that first win, I’m going to remember that forever.” Alex matched the course record with a 62 on Thursday, then shot 71-71 to begin the final round six strokes behind Women’s British Open champion Hall. “It was tough to back up the first round with some good rounds,” Alex said. Hall had a 75. The 22-yearold Englishwoman played the front nine in 2 over, with bogeys on the par-4 first and par-5 seventh. “The pin positions were really, really tough,” Hall said. “The front nine was unbelievable. I couldn’t even get to hardly any of

them. I was just trying to like stay patient and do what I could to kind of stay in it. I mean, she shot, what, 7 under? That’s incredible. ... My hats off to her.” Japan’s Ayako Uehara was third at 13 under after a 69. Australia’s Minjee Lee, two strokes behind playing partner Hall entering round, had a 77 to finish fourth at 11 under. “It was very bad,” Lee said. “I didn’t really have my ‘A’ game on.” Lexi Thompson shot 70 to tie for ninth at 7 under in her third event following a threeweek break for emotional and mental fatigue. Brooke Henderson had a 75 to tie for 21st at 4 under. The Canadian star, the 2015 and 2016 winner at Columbia Edgewater, won the CP Women’s Open last week on home soil in Saskatchewan, then opened with a 64 on Thursday, before slipping back with rounds of 71 and 74.

Anyone who has ever visited Thailand will be aware of the obsession Thai’s have with football. While the national team may never make it to the finals of the Asian Games or the World Cup competition, the enthusiasm the locals have for the game is incredible. The Father Ray Children’s

Home recently welcomed two Global Coaches from the English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur, known the world over as Spurs. The two coaches, Ashton Blackwood and Shaun Harris, are based in Asia and train youth teams in Hong Kong. Together with sponsors AIA Insurance Co., they spent an afternoon offering tips, training and playing with the children.

This was their first time to Pattaya, and although it was pouring with rain when they arrived, the downpour was never going to stop play. The two coaches are used to seeing talented players, and they seemed to be very impressed with several local players, including Neymar, Ronaldo and Messi! Shaun with ‘Neymar’.

One was the Indonesian martial

Raptor goes to Europe

From the sublime to the Gor blime! If you are old enough to sing “Splish, Splash, I was taking a bath …” you are old enough to remember it was sung by pop singer Bobby Darin. Born in the Bronx 1936 – he survived several bouts of rheumatic fever leaving him with a damaged heart. Later found out his “mother” was actually his grand-mother and his sister was really his true mother. Darin was a fairly lost soul, who married Sandra Dee in 1960 and divorced her in 1967 saying he “didn’t want to be married anymore.” (There’s commitment for you.) He had heart valve surgery in 1971 and died 1973 following open heart surgery. Married Andrea Joy Yeager for 5 months June-Oct that year. Darin met a clothing designer Andrew Di Dia in 1957. The clothing designer penned a car he called the Di Dia 150, and Darin staked a claim to the car if he ever made it big on the music circuit. For seven years, from 1953 to 1960 the Di Dia 150 was hand-built by four workers, at a cost of $93,647.29 but was sold to Darin in 1961 at a cost of over $150,000 (1.5 million today). At the time the car was listed as most expensive ‘custom-made’ car in the world by the Guinness Book of Records. Built in Detroit, Michigan, clothing designer Andrew ‘Andy’ Di Dia designed this “unrestrained and unconventional” automobile. Its metallic red paint was made with 30 coats of ground diamonds for sparkle. Only one example was ever built. It has a front engine, rear-wheel drive, the body and chassis is hand-formed from 064 aluminum

with a 125-inch wheelbase alloy tube frame. It has a glass cockpit in back, a squared steering wheel and thermostatically controlled air conditioning system. The design included the first backseat-mounted radio speakers and hidden windshield wipers that started automatically when it rained. Each of the four bucket seats have their own thermostatically controlled air conditioning. (Remember this was 1960.) Darin drove his wife, Sandra Dee, in the car to the 34th Academy Awards in 1961. The car had two fans and a switch that you had to turn on for cooling. Bobby didn’t realize, so it overheated. All the magazines said the car caught fire but it didn’t. Di Dia toured the car around the country, when Darin wasn’t using it for public appearances. After publicity and film use, Darin donated his “Dream Car” to the St Louis Museum of Transportation in 1970 where it remains.

How is the BMW iSeries looking? Better accept the fact that one day you will be in an electric car. Forget about hybrids, the extra engine won’t be needed, that engine is there to make the owner relax and forget about “range anxiety”. Most electric only power vehicles have ranges around 160 kays already, and how many current drivers travel more than 160 kays between power points? The mycarcheck.com in the UK has looked at the i3 experience and reported “The BMW i3 launched in 2013, making it one of the world’s first mass-produced pure electric vehicles. energy from renewable sources. It’s not all about the green credentials though. There’s also the luxury and lure of the premium German brand, and great driving dynamics, helped by near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution. “Expect to achieve between 120-160 kilos from a full charge, depending

which drive mode you select. If you suffer from range anxiety, and your budget will stretch, models with a range extender engine can go for around 300 km. As with any used purchase, but perhaps even more so in the fledgling used EV market, do your own history check to find out exactly what you’re getting into.” The i8 in Thailand is available as a new car but you are looking at nudging 13 million baht for the pleasure of going 100 percent electric.

Ford of Europe has confirmed it will next year launch the Australian-developed but built in Thailand Ranger Raptor, a “bad-ass” performance pick-up using the same 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel engine sold Down Under. Previously only sold in Asia-Pacific markets, such as Australia and Thailand, the opening up of Ranger Raptor sales in Europe inches the model closer towards its rumored availability in North America, where it is expected to instead use an EcoBoost petrol engine, possibly the 2.7-liter V6. The Ranger Raptor’s twinturbocharged EcoBlue unit has been the subject of much debate since the model was shown, with Ford Asia Pacific last month forced to defend its suitability as a performance vehicle. Specifically, it produces 157 kW of power at 3750 rpm and 500 Nm of torque from 1750 to

Ranger Raptor.

2000 rpm, while drive is sent part-time to all four wheels via a dual-range transfer case and a 10-speed torque-convertor automatic transmission with magnesium paddle shifters. (Another fine example of PR Speak. Who cares what the paddle shifters are made from.) This gives the Raptor performance figures of zero to 100 kays in 10.5 seconds, with the 2404 kg Raptor a top speed of 170 km/h. While the Asia Pacific-market Ranger Raptor is built in Thailand, the European-market version will be produced in South Africa, where it will also be sold. The regular Ranger has been Europe’s best-selling pick-up since 2015.

According to Ford Performance director of Europe Leo Roeks, the Ranger Raptor will offer a new level of off-road performance for European buyers when it enters showrooms in 2019. “Forget everything you think you know about pickups,” he said, “Our new Ranger Raptor is a different breed – a thoroughbred desert racer and extreme lifestyle off-roader that can toil with the best of them in the harshest of working conditions. “The new Ranger Raptor delivers all the tools a thrillseeker could ask for. Like a motocross bike, snowmobile and an ATV in one – it’s the ultimate adventure pick-up.” As previously reported, Ford Australia currently holds about 1000 Ranger Raptor pre-orders, which it hopes to deliver by Christmas. The model officially launches in Australia in October.

What did we learn from Monza? Well, we learned that once again Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) has not learned the lessons regarding the first lap – you never win the race on the first lap, you only lose the race on the first lap, which he did. Very successfully. Vettel will lose the world championship and hand the title to Hamilton (Mercedes) if he doesn’t learn the lessons soon enough. We also learned that Herr Vettel is becoming a moaning Vettel, ready to blame everyone else, while Kimi Raikkonen just carries on to the best of his undoubted ability and does not get into the blame game. Kimi even apologized to the Tifosi for not winning. From the Ice Man that is true humility. The same could not be said for one of the others on the podium. The wonder cloggie (Verstappen) once more showed his immaturity after being given a five second time penalty for giving Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) a helping hand into the shrubbery, resulting in a string of expletives. He followed that with the following radio messages. “Team radio to Max: You are racing Vettel and not Bottas.” Max: “I know that, but I don’t care.” So much for the “team spirit.” He is very talented, and (hopefully) will mature one day. More and more, Grands Prix are won or lost in the stewards room. Take for example, the disqualification of Romain

Grosjean at Monza. The official take of all this began with a protest by Renault about Grosjean’s car. “The stewards of the meeting have requested, that the technical delegate inspects the floor of car number 08, driver Romain Grosjean, for compliance with Article 3.7.1 d) of the 2018 Formula One Technical Regulations in relation to clarification given in TD/033-18 published on 25 July 2018.” The crime? Not having a 50 mm radius on the corners of the leading edge of the floor. Shame on Renault and shame on the stewards for accepting the protest. Another ridiculous bunch of rules refer to the use of engines. Use more than three and you are relegated to the rear of the grid. In the halcyon days of Jim Clark the mechanics were cannibalizing cars and engines just to make the grid. It didn’t spoil the races and didn’t need Article 3.7.1 d) of the 2018 Formula One Technical Regulations. Unfortunately, Liberty Media does not understand F1 well enough and is too weak to scrap all the aero and the DRS while they are at it. Magnussen (Haas) was still whinging after the race, claiming that Alonso was “disrespectful” to him. The other user of the “disrespectful” button is Hamilton. Magnussen, Hamilton, Vettel.

What a bunch of sissies we have as drivers these days. So to the racing and Vettel’s first lap spin. Attacked by Hamilton, Kimi showed his mettle and fought for first on the road. Close but fair. Vettel, Hulkenberg (Renault) and Ricciardo ploughed through the field from the back, with some exciting moves; however, it was the edge of the seat suspense of would Kimi managed to hold on. He tried, but the tyres let him down. The next GP is at Singapore September 16 in the middle of a cast of singing budgies with a race meeting thrown in as well. Andrea’s dream comes true Have you heard of the Italian banker who came to Thailand and opened a restaurant? If you haven’t, you can find one at the Cotto restaurant at Nong Prue. Andrea Salvini was a banker for 24 years, but learned the restaurant trade working as a restaurant manager after banking hours. His dream was to be a restaurateur so he resigned and came to Thailand and opened Cotto three years ago. Andrea has a big smile on his face.

Today’s special.

Once you have mastered the Pornprapamit cross roads intersection with Chaiyapornwitee, which has offset arms, proceed for about 50 meters and Cotto is on the 90 degree bend to the left. Just before the bend is an opening into the Cotto parking area. Careful with the narrow entrance. Cotto is a small “family” style restaurant with pizzas and pastas as the most popular dishes, but the menu has much more than the two Italian staples. Appetizers are B. 140-200, next up are the 17 types of pizza (B. 280-300), followed by pastas (B. 220260) and then a list of sandwiches all at B. 180, including one called the Undertaker! Andrea has a sense of humor as well as a big smile. Mains include lamb (B. 340), tenderloin beef (B. 380) and tenderloin pork. Andrea also has rotating specials on the blackboard outside. Beers are B. 60-70, with a Beer Lao B. 80. We were offered a wine, for which Andrea was very apologetic as

back, which incorporates a pasta cooker and the pizza oven, gas rings, deep freeze and refrigerator. Plus Andrea, his girlfriend and an assistant and a very bubbly pizzaioli (the employee who cooks pizzas). Andrea, who has

generous, and having seen the size of the pastas we shared it, as well as the pizza. I have to admit I don’t order Margherita very often as the offering tends to be lacking in taste, but since I was going to share with one of the Junior Tasters I acceded to the choice. Wow! This was a Margherita with plenty of taste and very enjoyable. The size was also very large. Do try and you’ll see what I mean. Meanwhile our photographer, who ordered the Carbonara, came to a halt three quarters of the way through. “I’m full – or rather Im Lao. Fortunately the pizza taster assisted and there were only empty plates returned to the kitchen.

The happiest pizzaioli in town.

I drank Andrea’s offered red wine, and despite it being Chilean and not Italian, was a simple vin de table but quaffable and enjoyable. Dining at Cotto was like a family dinner at home. No airs and graces but warmth and humor and Andrea and his staff making sure we enjoyed ourselves. Go once (to find the way) and you will

Gaeng Gari Gai – Yellow Curry Chicken Yellow curry chicken is a Thai favorite with chicken and potatoes in a creamy ‘soup’ and eaten with Thai jasmine rice. The spices used in Thai yellow curry paste are cumin, coriander seed, garlic, salt, lemongrass, red chili peppers or cayenne pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cumin, turmeric, mace and cardamom. However, take my tip and buy the commercial yellow curry paste instead! This recipe is one of the simplest for this dish.

Ingredients Chicken breast sliced White onion quartered Potato (peeled and quartered) Coconut cream Coconut milk Yellow curry paste Cooking oil

Serves 4 600 gm 2 2 medium 4 cups 3 cups 3 tbsps 2 tbspns

Cooking method Heat oil in a pot over medium to low heat. Add the curry paste and sauté in the oil until fragrant. Add coconut cream and continue to simmer for about 4-5 minutes or until you can see the yellow oily part starting to separate. Add coconut milk and coconut cream and chicken and continue simmering for about 15 minutes. Add potato and continue cooking chicken and potato for another 15 minutes, then add onion until all is cooked through. Serve with Jasmine rice.

Stephen Wade Jakarta, Indonesia (AP) Indonesia billed itself the “Energy of Asia” during the Asian Games, which closed Sunday in a ceremony emphasizing the country’s diversity and the ties linking the 11,000 athletes who competed for 45 nations.

The opening ceremony two weeks ago was highly choreographed, but the athletes starred in most of the closing pomp as they sang and danced on the infield at the Bung Karno stadium during a persistent shower, the first rain in Jakarta for a month. Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad alSabah of Kuwait, the head

of the Olympic Council of Asia, got rousing applause when he told the packed stadium: “Thank you Jakarta, thank you Palembang. You did it.” Indonesia, with 260 million people and the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, agreed four years ago to hold the Asian Games after Vietnam backed out for financial reasons. two host cities, Jakarta and Palembang. The next Asia Games are in Hangzhou, China, in 2022, and in 2026 in Nagoya, Japan. Chinese billionaire Jack Ma stepped out on the stage near the end, waving and smiling and plugging his home city. “I’m Jack Ma,” the chairman of the Alibaba Group said. “It’s a beautiful city. So please come to Hangzhou.”

China, Japan and South Korea topped the medal table - as usual - and host Indonesia had its best Asian Games finishing fourth. A combined Koreas team stole some of the show, winning four medals over two weeks. Three were in dragon boat racing, and one of those was gold. Acombined Koreas women’s ice hockey team also competed

in the Winter Olympics six months ago in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but did not win a medal. The other games showstopper was Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee, who won six gold medals and eight overall. She’ll be among the most watched and promoted athletes as Japan prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Continued on page 29

Local windsurfer Sirporn Kaewduang-ngam earned a bronze medal at the recently concluded Asian Games in Hong Kong. Sirporn, who dominated last year’s Southeast Asian

Games, finished third in the RS:X race Aug. 31, behind sailors from China and Hong Kong. She was welcomed back to Pattaya by her proud family and friends.

Monza, Italy (AP) - Lewis Hamilton denied Ferrari a dream home win at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday as he overtook Kimi Raikkonen eight laps from the end to claim a fifth victory in seven years at Monza. The Mercedes driver beat Raikkonen, who had started in pole, to tie Michael Schumacher’s record of five Italian GP victories and extend his championship lead to 30 points over Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who had a nightmare start. Valtteri Bottas was third in his Mercedes, ahead of Vettel and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who received a five-second penalty. Hamilton had started third, behind Raikkonen and Vettel after the Ferraris started on the front row, booking the top two places at Monza for the first time since 2000. The championship leader put Vettel under pressure immediately but Vettel pulled clear and was alongside Raikkonen into the first corner.

Hamilton had another go on the outside heading into the second chicane, inching ahead of Vettel when they made contact causing Vettel to spin and lose part of his front wing. The safety car was deployed and Vettel went into the pits for a new front wing, coming out 18th.

Both drivers complained on team radio but an investigation decided that no further action was necessary. Moments after the safety car came in on lap four, Hamilton swiftly overtook Raikkonen on the straight but gave the lead back almost immediately at the second chicane. Meanwhile, Vettel was

powering through the field and had made it back into the top 10 by lap 15 and was up to fifth nine laps later. But the German’s hopes of getting onto the podium were diminished when he was forced to make another pit stop and came out 10th. Continued on page 28
