Cars jammed Sukhumvit Road and the three major arteries into the city over the July 2730 weekend, which included Asalaha Bucha Day, Khao Phansa and HM the King’s birthday. Congestion was heavy, but cars did move, albeit slowly. Pattaya spokesman Pinit Maneerat said city hall dispatched officers to check boats and ensure safety at Bali Hai Pier and at major intersections to keep traffic moving and motorists following safety laws. Police checkpoints looked for drivers not using helmets or seatbelts and ensuring drivers on long trips home were not drowsy. beautiful. She said the disruption from the rehabilitation has been minimal. Another chair and umbrella renter, Somruay Pakdeewong, was working on Pattaya Beach back when it was truly beautiful and undamaged by erosion and tourism. But since the 1980s, when he first began work, the beach has eroded to as little as three meters wide. He’s happy to see the government work to restore the landmark and feels the restored beach will mean more business for him.

Chonburi named 1 of 6 sports provinces

Marine Dept. enforces boat safety over holiday

Speedboat operator Thongchai Siritham said about 30 single- and doubleengine boats were deployed for the July 27-30 holiday thanks to the influx of tourists looking to go to Koh Larn.

Contestants line up for last year’s bikini beach run. This and other events has earned Chonburi the designation as one of the country’s six sports provinces.

Jetsada Homklin The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has designated Chonburi as one of the country’s six sports provinces. A panel formed in April as part of National Sports Development Plan for

2017-2021 tapped six locales to build the country’s sports industry and tourism. The other provinces are Buri Ram, Krabi, Si Saket, Suphan Buri and Udon Thani. Pattaya’s large indoor stadium, football arena, golf courses, beaches and many

bicycle routes has powered Chonburi’s efforts to become a center for sporting events. Competitive events held in the province include motorcycle racing, basketball, petanque, sepak takraw, football, swimming, aerobics and yoga.

Pattaya cabbies want 100 baht fare for under 2k

Local taxi cooperatives have officially asked the military to dramatically raise fares in exchange for their cooperation in using meters.

Jetsada Homklin Pattaya taxi drivers have officially asked the military to dramatically raise fares in exchange for their cooperation in using meters. The Pattaya and Bothong taxi cooperatives and Pattaya Beach Taxi announced July 25 they would propose that base fares for metered cabs be raised from the current 30 baht to 100 baht for trips of two kilometers or less. Even more drastically, the taxi union wants to charge 20 baht per kilometer for the third kilometer onward. That would be an increase of 500 percent from the current six

baht per kilometer for kilometers 3-10, and 10 baht for each kilometer afterward. The proposal comes in response to the army’s renewed threat to crackdown on drivers not using meters. But cabbies brazenly have told army officials they won’t use meters because the fares are too low. Drivers must compete with 10-baht songthaews and, because of the small size of Pattaya, most trips are under two kilometers. So cabbies try to negotiate fares, quoting rates of 300 baht from Central Festival Pattaya Beach to the Pattaya Bus Station when the legal fare is 60 baht.

Cabbies were told to report to an August 1 meeting where the law would be laid down, and drivers given a chance to suggest a compromise. The taxi unions say that if the military gives them what they want, drivers will use meters. Fares, however, are difficult and complicated to raise, requiring public notice and signoff by the Transport Ministry and even the Prime Minister’s Office. Repeated attempts by Bangkok cabbies to raise the base fare from the current 35 baht have all failed, with the Prime Minister’s Office saying higher rates would place an undue burden on the public.

Speedboat operators said the Marine Department strictly enforced safety standards over the holiday weekend to prevent another disaster like the one that killed 47 people in Phuket last month. Speedboat operator Thongchai Siritham said about 30 single- and double-engine boats were deployed for the July 27-30 holiday thanks to the influx of tourists looking to go to Koh Larn. He said Marine Department inspectors checked all boats, ensuring they were not overloaded and all passengers were wearing life jackets.

Single-engine speedboats can carry a maximum 12 people and double-engine craft up to 25. Operators were threatened with hefty fines for

non-compliance. Thongchai said all boats must have life-saving equipment and first aid kids, and the drivers must have proper licenses.

Jetsada Homklin Dozens of teenagers were forced to publicly beg forgiveness from their parents while their parents were scolded after the youths were caught using drugs at an after-hours pub. Banglamung District officials led the raid on the JT Pub & Karaoke on Soi Khopai around 3:30 a.m. July 23. More than 150 customers were inside, with 70 of them found to be underage. Seven of those were younger than age 16. Of the underage teens, 30

tested positive for drugs – 15 for ketamine, seven for crystal methamphetamine and eight for marijuana. Another five adults also failed urine tests. Club manager Praewprao McCulloch was arrested and charged with violating opening hours, selling alcohol after hours, allowing underage people to enter, selling alcohol to underage customers, and allowing drugs to be used. The teens and their parents, however, were ordered to appear later the same day

at the Banglamung District office where military officers and district chief read both the riot act – the kids for using drugs and staying out until the wee hours, and the parents for doing such a poor job of parenting. After they apologized for humiliating their parents and besmirching the image of Pattaya, the teens were packed off to a drug-rehabilitation camp and parents given a warning to better supervise their offspring. The pub, meanwhile, faces a five-year closure.

Chanita Chantee, owner of the Gift for Phone shop in Nongprue Moo 11 village, shared video of the July 22 theft of a display model smartphone from her business. Afterward, when Thongyu was distracted, the woman pocketed a pricey new phone on display and fled the shop.

To repair reputation, Twitter, Facebook incur investor wrath Barbara Ortutay New York (AP) - Two of the biggest social media platforms lost nearly one-fifth of their market value after reporting disappointing user growth. Twitter’s stock plunged Friday after it reported a decline in its monthly users and warned that the number could fall further in the coming months. The 20.5 percent plunge came one day after Facebook lost 19 percent of its value in a single day. Twitter says it’s putting the long-term stability of its platform above user growth. That leaves investors seemingly unable to value what the biggest companies in the sector, which rely on their potential user reach, are worth. On Wednesday, Facebook warned that its revenue growth will slow down significantly for at least the remainder of the year and that expenses will continue to skyrocket. The next day, the company saw its biggest one-day drop Facebook history. Facebook continues to grapple with big existential questions, ranging from its users’ privacy to tech addiction to how it deals with fake news and misinformation, hate speech and extremism on its service. Both the slower growth forecast and heavier spending reflect problems

(AP Photo/Richard Drew, File) largely of Facebook’s own making. Twitter had 335 million monthly users in the quarter, below the 339 million Wall Street was expecting, and down slightly from 336 million in the first quarter. That overshadowed strong monthly user growth of 3 percent compared with the previous year. The company said its monthly user number could continue to fall in the “mid-single-digit millions” in the third quarter. While Friday was Twitter’s second-worst loss since it went public in November 2013, the stock has still doubled in value over the last 12 months. Long criticized for allowing bad behavior to run rampant on its platform, Twitter has begun to crack down, banning accounts that violate its terms and making others less visible.

Twitter is now attempting to rein in the worst offenders after years as one of the Wild West corners of the internet. At the same time, it must convince people it’s the goto platform in social media, even though it is dwarfed right now by Facebook. Facebook has more than 2.23 billion users while its apps WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger each have over 1 billion. Twitter on Friday reiterated its efforts to “to invest in improving the health of the public conversation” on its platform, making the “long-term health” of its service a priority over short-term metrics such as user numbers. As part of these efforts, Twitter said that as of May, its systems identified and challenged more than 9 million accounts per week that

IEAT prepares to handle flooding at industrial estates The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) has drafted plans in case flooding affects any of 55 industrial estates across the country, and ordered particular wariness at three estates, where earthen dykes and water gates are to be reinforced. Interim Governor of the IEAT Attaphol Jirawatjanya

explained that in response to the Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute predictions of a larger than normal volume of rain this year, all 55 industrial estates in its care have been told to closely monitor the situation and prepare response plans for natural disasters. The three estates being given special attention are all

in Ayutthaya province. They are Bang Pa In Estate, Baan Wa Estate and Saharatana Nakhon Estate and are all in low lying areas that are susceptible to flooding. The IEAT has ordered the three inspect their dykes, which range in height from 5.4 to 7.5 meters. They are also to plot water management plans to deal with flooding. (NNT)

are potentially spam or automated, up from 6.4 million in December 2017. The company has previously disclosed these numbers. A Washington Post report put the total number of suspended accounts in May and June at 70 million. The Associated Press also found that Twitter suspended 56 million such accounts in the last quarter of 2017. While Twitter maintains that most of these accounts were dormant and thus not counted in the monthly user figure, the company also warned that its cleanup efforts could affect its counted user base without giving specific numbers. “We want people to feel safe freely expressing themselves and have launched new tools to address problem behaviors that distort and distract from the public conversation,” CEO Jack Dorsey said in a prepared statement. Twitter ’s market value dropped by more than $6 billion Friday, to around $26 billion. Investors still value Facebook at $503 billion. Facebook lost $119 billion in value on Thursday. Twitter’s second-quarter net income hit $100.1 million, after a loss last year during the same period. It’s the company’s third profit in a row, the third it has ever posted.

Per-share, the San Francisco company’s net income was 13 cents, or 17 cents adjusted, in line with expectations, according to a poll by

Zacks Investment Research. Revenue of $710.5 million, up 24 percent and edging out expectations of $696 million.

White balance and black cats

Read an interesting article on ‘white balance’, making out that this was something new and magical experienced only with digital photography. Let me assure you, it isn’t new, it isn’t magical and it isn’t the sole situation vis-à-vis film and digital photography. Have you ever tried to photograph a polar bear? Or a black cat? Or even a white car, or a plain black one? If you use an automatic camera set on A (for “amnesia”) then the chances are very high that you ended up with a grey polar bear and a grey cat. Very highly likely. The reason for this is the magic photographic number known as 18 percent grey! All photographers should become acquainted with the color known as 18 percent

grey. Why? Because after you understand 18 percent grey, you have complete control over blacks and whites in your photographs – and by that, I mean in color photography, not just the B&W kind. The really dedicated photo buffs will recognize 18 percent grey as being the cornerstone of the “Zone System” and Ansel Adams superb prints are trotted out with sage mutterings that if you understood the zone system, then your photos would look like his too. This is, of course, BS. Ansel Adams spent hours painstakingly printing his B&W work, specifically burning in some areas, holding back others and if you think he didn’t then think again. However, here is the “short course” on the Zone System. What you have to remember is just the simple fact that the meter in your camera knows intimately what is 18 percent grey, and is programmed to produce as much 18 percent grey as possible. In other words, point the camera at your subject and the meter

Dear Hillary, I notice that most of the letters you get are from farang males who are complaining about what has happened to them in the bar scene. Surely they must see that there is a big difference between that side of Pattaya and the other side? If they were only to look past the end of their noses they would appreciate that there are some truly wonderful girls out there. I have been married to my Thai wife for four years now and there has never been a “bad moment” in all that time. She is beautiful, intelligent (a qualified accountant) and caring. I do not have to change the locks on my doors or worry that my suits will be cut up. She does not need ropes of gold to hold her in the marriage, or motorcycles, or houses. We have a partnership and mutual trust. Why don’t some of these men look for the “good” girls? Amazed Dear Amazed, There may be lots of reasons. One may be that the supply of “wonderful girls” is much less than the demand, so the single males gravitate to the good-time girls, of which there is a more than adequate supply. Look after your wonderful wife and buy her plenty of chocolates (you can send the champagne to me, Hillary, c/o Pattaya Mail) and continue to build on your mutual trust. Bar scene farangs generally are not looking past the end of their noses - it is some other part of the anatomy. By the way, which other side of Pattaya are you referring to? Surely not the Dark Side, I hope. Dear Hillary, I read with astonishment the letter written to your Dear Hillary column by my friend, Tully. Although truly a very dear friend, Tully hasn’t a clue. It is not my purple bank

will work out a combination of shutter speed and aperture to give an exposure to get the whole shot as close to 18 percent grey as possible. This is irrespective of whatever name the camera manufacturer gives to the metering system. Now this works for the majority of shots – 18 percent grey is close enough, and the Photoshop can adjust the rest from there – but it is always a compromise. You do not even realize what a compromise it really is until you take a photograph of that aforementioned white

car or a black cat, and see that it has been printed grey. This is one reason why I keep on saying that if you run the camera in the fully A for automatic mode, you will only get A for “average” pictures. What you have to do to get whites or blacks is to run the camera in the metered manual mode instead. Remember that when you are photographing the white car the exposure indicated by the camera is the one that will make the white car 18 percent grey. To get the car back to white it will need more light on the film.

notes that the girls seek me out for, it’s a particular body part of mine. Known as the “best” in Pattaya it has become a legend in certain circles and although I can’t use it very often it has made me very popular in town. “Jerry” Dear “Jerry”, You and Tully sound quite a pair. Jealousy, intrigue, purple persuader finances, bar girls and unusable popular body parts. All the ingredients for another Stephen Leather exciting yarn. I shall let him know about you both. You can expect a telephone call. However, while waiting for the call, it would be interesting for you both to reverse your roles. Let Tully flash the purples, while you see whether the popularity of the best part continues. Do let Hillary know. It’s not often you can become part of a sociological experiment! Dear Hillary, My name is Oghale Lawrence, a member of the Presidential Task Force on Oil Spillage Clean-up. Early last year there was a major oil spillage in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The contract was handled by a foreign firm but we decided to overinvoice the contract sum. Now the contract has been completed and the original contractor has since been paid, but the contract balance of US$38 million has been left in a suspense account with the Central Bank of Nigeria. The problem is as government officials, we are not supposed to own fat bank accounts, talk less of having foreign ones. We are soliciting your assistance as a foreign partner who can assist us and receive this amount into your account.

Here’s what you do. Imagine your camera tells you that the exposure should be f16 @ 1/60th of a second. You need more light to fall on the emulsion, so make your exposure f 11 @ 1/60th and another at f8 @ 1/60th. That gives you both one and two full stops of light more. One of those two will give you a white car, irrespective of such fancy terms as automated multi-phasic

metering, center weighted metering or whatever. Now when photographing a black object, the camera meter will indicate a shutter speed and an aperture to give you another 18 percent grey object. There is too much light this time. What you have to do is cut down on the amount of light getting into the camera. Again imagine that the indicated exposure is f8 @ 1/60th. You want to darken things, so take two shots with one at f11 @ 1/60th and another at f16 @ 1/60th. Again this is one and two stops decrease in light levels. One of these will give you a black cat! Put the camera in metered manual mode and then if you are photographing something white, give it one and two stops more light than indicated. Conversely, if photographing something black, set the camera for one and two stops less light than indicated.

We are ready to share this money with you. For providing the account where we shall remit this money, you will be entitled to 25 percent of the entire funds, 70 percent will be for me and my partners, while 5 percent has been set aside to cover any expenses that may be incurred by both parties during this transaction, both local and international. Please I enjoin you to handle this transaction with utmost degree of maturity and confidentiality because I am still in active government service with the “Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation”. Oghale Lawrence Dear Oggie, Sending uninvited “invitations” such as this to a newspaper is a sure-fire way to keep things confidential. However, Hillary is well aware of your particular scam, which has been doing the rounds for about 15 years. It works because people get blinded by the thought of 25 percent of 38 million USD (before you rush to the electronic calculator, it is 9.5 million), and it sounds as if you don’t have to pay out anything. You do, and Oggie and his mates would tantalize you with messages that there is only one more step, but they have to pay somebody off, so just send another X dollars for stamp duty, transfer, etc., and the money will be released. They, of course, cannot touch the 38 million because it is frozen until it is sent to your account, so are unable to pay the stamp duty themselves. Pattaya, if you haven’t seen one of these scam letters there it is. Put it in the circular file immediately. Oh yes, Oggie, oil spillage is a great place for you, you slippery character.

More(ton) on BSE My recent column on breast cancer and Breast Self Examination (BSE) produced a response from Dr Michael Moreton, the former International Medical Coordinator at the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Bangkok. I have taken the liberty (with his permission) to reprint his letter. “I was a specialist in Women’s Heath care for many years and the techniques used to screen for Breast Cancer are of special interest to me. I would like to make a couple of additional comments to add to Dr Iain’s words. “I agree wholeheartedly that Breast Self Examination (BSE) is a useful method of monitoring the breasts. Every woman’s breasts are different in texture and the patient becomes an expert in her own breasts and can recognize changes that a doctor might miss. I suggest to patients that a good time is in the shower or while waiting for the water temperature to stabilize before getting into the shower. “It is important to know the correct technique. You should press the breast tissue between the chest wall and the flat pads of your fingers, do not use the tips of the fingers. When you have your next physical exam ask your doctor to demonstrate how to do this. Every doctor has had the experience of a woman coming to see them and telling them that they have a breast lump and it is only with the woman’s instructions that the doctor can feel the

lump. It’s a good technique; we both recommend that you do this self-examination regularly. “The debate about Mammography swings one way and another. The modern machines are now using a digital technique. This has several advantages. With the older machines there was a worry that repeated mammograms might even cause cancer due to radiation. There is no chance of that now. With the computer we can also zoom in to worrying areas and get more information. Digital also has the advantage that the pictures can be sent electronically for a second opinion or put on a disk so that you can keep the pictures and show a doctor in another country if that is your wish. “Ultrasound, can also be useful in certain situations. In order to perform mammography the breast has to be compressed between two plates and X-rayed, in women with small breasts this can be difficult and U/S may be a better method for these women. Similarly women with breast implants may be additionally assessed with this method. If I am particularly interested in one area of the breast I will ask the technician to look carefully at the area. The U/S can be angled in from different directions and this can be useful in examining a worrisome area of the breast. Most modern U/S machines also have a Doppler ability and they

can identify areas of the breast with a particularly rich blood supply, which can be a sign of trouble. “Another technique that has been discussed for several years and that you may read about is Thermography. In this method the patient is placed in a cool room and photographs are taken with a temperature sensitive camera. Hot spots on the breast can be identified. The problem is that not all hot spots are caused by cancers; I am not too enthusiastic about this method. “The most exciting thing on the horizon is the use of genetic studies in assessing the chances of cancer in any one patient. We know that there are two genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 which can be inherited and will increase the chances of cancer developing. When this blood test is perfected any woman will be able to have a blood test to see if she has a high risk or a low risk of getting breast cancer. Then different screening programs can be arranged. “A few dietary steps can be taken which may help to reduce the chances of cancer. A diet full of fat is thought to be dangerous; one more reason to avoid them. One positive step that mothers should take is to breast feed their babies as it is found that this activity is protective.” (Thank you Dr. Moreton for reinforcing the message on BSE. From here, it is up to you, ladies!)

AP-NORC Poll: If DNA shows health risks, most want to know Who gets tested?

Lauran Neergaard & Emily Swanson Washington (AP) - Would you want to know if you harbor a gene linked to Alzheimer’s or another incurable disease? A new poll finds most Americans would. Some 17 percent of Americans already have undergone at least one kind of DNA test, and 52 percent of the remainder say they’d like to, according to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released Thursday. Curiosity about ancestry is the main reason. But large segments of the public also want to know if they’re at risk for various medical conditions - even if they can’t do anything about it. In fact, 60 percent of people say they’d want to know if they carried a gene associated with a disease that’s currently incurable, the APNORC poll found. The question is how they’d handle that information. For most diseases, whether you get sick depends on a mix of genetics, lifestyle and other factors. “It’s really important for people to understand that it is a risk, not a destiny,” said Erica Ramos, president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors.

Lots of tests to choose from Genealogy buffs can get clues about ancestry. DNA testing can help diagnose symptoms, predict risk of later health problems, or tell if prospective parents might pass on diseases such as cystic fibrosis. Doctors can tell if certain medicines are

Those living in households making $100,000 a year or more are most likely to have had a gene test. Direct-toconsumer tests are paid for out-of-pocket, but insurance may cover DNA tests deemed medically necessary.

Trusting the results

Graphic shows results of AP-NORC Center poll on attitudes toward genetic testing. more or less likely to work based on genetics, what’s called precision medicine. Some gene tests require just a credit card and mailing in a saliva sample, while others need a doctor’s order - and there are important differences.

What people want to know Younger adults especially want to know what health conditions might lie ahead. Among those under 30, more

than two-thirds are interested in genetic testing and of those, 65 percent say one reason is to learn if they might pass a disease to their children. If they’re at risk for an incurable disease, 78 percent of the younger crowd would want to know. And if they got that bad news, 8 in 10 people of all ages would tell siblings and children, family members who might harbor the same gene.

Most people think genetic testing is at least somewhat reliable, but less than half call it very or extremely reliable, the poll found. DNA testing isn’t foolproof, said Ramos, the genetic counselor. There can be false alarms, the reason medical labs and the most popular direct-to-consumer companies must meet strict testing rules. But there are loopholes: Say after ancestry testing, you download the “raw” genetic data generated to analyze your heritage and send the file to a second company to interpret whatever health information is inside. Those companies may not be certified for medical diagnosis - meaning it’s important for a doctor to verify any scary result. The flip side: False reassurance. Direct-to-consumer tests for breast cancer risk, for example, only look for a few mutations. If cancer runs in the family, you may need a doctor-ordered test that examines a variety of genes and mutations, Ramos said. A genetic counselor can help explain the different tests and what results mean.

Privacy is complicated, too Half of Americans are very or extremely concerned about companies sharing their genetic data without their knowledge, and roughly a

third have the same concerns about medical researchers and doctors, the poll found. Remember how investigators used a free genealogy website to track down a suspected California serial killer? Half of people think genetic data should be used to help solve crimes only with the consent of the person tested, a third think it’s OK without that consent - and 13 percent don’t think law enforcement should use it at all. Crime aside, federal law offers some privacy protections for DNA testing in medical settings - but check

privacy policies on direct-toconsumer websites. The AP-NORC poll of 1,109 adults was conducted June 13-18 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probabilitybased AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points. Respondents were first selected randomly using address-based sampling methods, and later interviewed online or by phone. Online: AP-NORC Center: http://www.apnorc.org/

Woman temporarily becomes millionaire after account mix-up Boston (AP) - For a few minutes, a Boston woman says she was a millionaire. Ellen Fleming says she received a voicemail from a TD Ameritrade financial consultant Wednesday afternoon that a deposit had been made into her account. The 26-year-old opened the company’s app on her cellphone and was surprised to find $1.1 million instead of the $50 that she had left a few months ago. Fleming tells The Boston Globe that she immediately thought about quitting her job and paying her student loans. Instead, she called the consultant back and informed them of the mix-up. Fleming says the money was meant for a woman with the same name who lives in Florida. She jokes that in her obituary she would like to be referred to as a “one-time millionaire.”

Firefighters rescue raccoon that got head stuck in mayo jar Ithaca, N.Y. (AP) - Firefighters in upstate New York helped out a presumably hungry raccoon that got its head stuck inside a mayonnaise jar. The Ithaca Fire Department says the raccoon was spotted in a tree during its recent predicament. The Ithaca Journal reports both city firefighters and a state Department of Environmental Conservation officer got the animal down. They placed the raccoon into a large plastic tub and freed its head. Once the DEC officer determined the raccoon was not injured, it was let go. The critter was last seen running toward a nearby creek.

Trapped tourists call wrong Lisbon police for help Lisbon, Maine (AP) - Two tourists who became trapped in an elevator accidently called the wrong Lisbon police department for help. Dispatcher Cathy Roy told WCSHTV Tuesday she was working at the Lisbon Police Department in Maine a few weeks ago when she received a call from the trapped tourists. The only problem was they were in Lisbon, Portugal. Roy says the two women had pressed the elevators’ emergency button for help. No one answered, so the women searched online for “Lisbon Police” and called the first number listed. Roy says she stayed on the phone with the women and found the right Lisbon police department to call. Despite the language barrier, Roy says she was able to direct emergency crews to the women and help them escape.

Police post mugshot of lost dog, bail paid in cookies Cape May, N.J. (AP) - A dog is home after police in a New Jersey shore town posted its mugshot on social media. Cape May Patrolman Michael LeSage found Bean the pug in a yard on Sunday. He tells The Star-Ledger of Newark he tried to get the dog to hop into his police car, but her legs were too short so he had to lift her. Police posted a photo of Bean on Facebook with the caption: “This is what happens when you run away from home.” It took a few hours before Bean’s owners tracked her down. Hadley Hubbard of Baltimore, Maryland, thanked police and posted that Bean was sound asleep after an exciting run. LeSage posted that Bean paid her bail in cookies.

Berlin (AP) - Swiss police say an Austrian family allegedly hijacked a taxi, crashed into a parked boat, drove through a hedge and then plunged off a 4-foot-high ledge before trying to escaping on foot. St. Gallen police said the incident happened early Sunday in the northeastern Swiss town of Rorschach. Police said the suspects - a married couple and their 10-year-old daughter - are accused of attacking the taxi’s 60-year-old driver before stealing his car and driving erratically to a nearby town. Their alleged taxi ride ended when the family crashed down the side of a driveway. Police say officers detained them as they fled. Police said the 38-year-old father “was not in a fit state to drive” and had no license. The girl and the taxi driver were injured and required medical treatment.

World gazes at total lunar eclipse, longest of this century

The moon turns red during a total lunar eclipse, as seen from Dresden, Germany, Friday, July 27, 2018. (Sebastian Kahnert/dpa via AP) Johannesburg (AP) - Curiosity and awe greeted a complete lunar eclipse on July 27, the longest one of this century and visible in much of the world. The so-called “blood moon,” when it turns a deep red, was visible at different times in Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe and South America when the sun, Earth and moon lined up perfectly, casting Earth’s shadow on the moon. The total eclipse lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes, with the entire event lasting closer to four hours. Rio de Janeiro’s spectators cheered when the blood moon emerged from the fog. Hundreds of people watched at a fort overlooking the iconic Copacabana beach and Sugarloaf Mountain. The local planetarium set up telescopes for astrology fans. “These telescopes are fantastic. It’s one thing to see pictures of the planets in a book and another to see it in real life,” said Ana Selma Ferreira, a 46-year old lawyer who brought her children to the spectacle. Across Africa people turned to the sky, watching the reddish shadow slide up the moon’s surface. In Somalia,

some hurried to mosques for special prayers. In South Sudan, some dared to take photos in a war-torn country where using a camera in public is discouraged. In Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, people at an open-air restaurant

admired a rare clear view during the rainy season, comparing a live NASA webcast to what they saw above. Then clouds rolled in. “Dem yelebesech chereka,” some murmured - Amharic for “blood moon.” “The reason that the moon turns red is because atmospheric scattering causes red light to pass through the atmosphere and the composition of the atmosphere can change if volcanic eruptions or forest fires occur,” said Tom Kerss, an astronomer with the Royal Observatory Greenwich. “And the density of dust increasing in the atmosphere can cause the moon to appear a particularly deep red, and indeed it has the same effect on our sunsets and sunrises.” In a special treat, Mars is also at its closest approach to Earth this week since 2003, making it appear bigger and brighter. Excited skywatchers on social media shared photos of the bright planet just to the right of the moon. North America missed out on Friday’s lunar eclipse but can look forward to the next one on Jan. 21, 2019, according to NASA.

Facebook suspends Boston analytics firm over data usage New York (AP) - Facebook said last week that it has suspended Boston-based analytics firm Crimson Hexagon while it investigates how it collects and shares Facebook and Instagram’s user data. Facebook has been facing increased scrutiny over how third-party firms use its data since news broke in March that data firm Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed user data. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Facebook had suspended Crimson Hexagon. The newspaper says among the firm’s clients is a Russian nonprofit with ties to the Kremlin. “We don’t allow developers to build surveillance tools using information from Facebook or Instagram,” said Ime Archibong, Facebook’s vice president of product partnerships. “We take these

(AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File) allegations seriously, and we have suspended these apps while we investigate.” Facebook said Friday that Crimson Hexagon is cooperating and that so far its investigation hasn’t found evidence that the firm obtained Facebook or Instagram information inappropriately.

Crimson Hexagon says on its website it has access to over one trillion consumer conversations from social media, forums, blogs and reviews. In a blog posting, Crimson Hexagon Chief Technology Officer Chris Bingham said the company “abides

completely” by the rules social media sites including Twitter and Facebook put in place to limit the ways thirdparty companies can use their data. He said the firm only collects publicly available social media data. He contrasted that with Cambridge Analytica’s use of private user data. Users of Crimson Hexagon’s platform, which include government customers, analyze the data to understand largescale consumer trends and preferences, Bingham wrote. “Government entities that leverage the Crimson Hexagon platform do so for the same reasons as many of our other non-government customers: a broad-based and aggregate understanding of the public’s perception, preferences and sentiment about matters of concern to them,” he wrote.

UK space officials seek nifty name for Mars rover London (AP) - The U.K. Space Agency is looking for a catchy name for the ExoMars Rover being developed for use in a mission set for 2020. The agency launched a competition last week to find the best name for the rover, a key U.K. contribution to the European Space Agency’s Mars voyage. The winner won’t get a trip to Mars - that would take far too long.

However, the winner will win the chance to take three guests on a tour of the Airbus facility in Stevenage, around 30 miles north of London, where the rover is being built. The rover is a six-wheeled robot that will search for evidence of past or even present life. The contest is open to residents of countries belonging to the European Space Agency.

Russian space agency confirms security agency search Moscow (AP) - Russia’s space agency is confirming that federal security agents have searched two of its daughter operations, following a report that their workers were suspected of treason for cooperating with the West. The respected business newspaper Kommersant reported that a criminal case for treason had been filed in connection with the alleged passing on of information about Russia’s hypersonic rocket development.

The searches were confirmed by space agency spokesman Vladimir Ustimenko to state television, but he said further information would have to come from the Federal Security Service. Kommersant, citing unnamed sources, said the searches involved hypersonic rockets. President Vladimir Putin in March announced Russia had developed an array of new weapons, including a nuclear missile that could fly at Mach 10 and evade enemy defenses.

More accessibility urged for Pattaya hotels, tourist attractions Jetsada Homklin Tourist attractions and hotels were urged to make their facilities more accessible to the disabled as a way to turn Pattaya into a good example of what is possible in the attempt to create “tourism for all”. About 250 hoteliers and tourism industry executives attended the July 19 seminar organized by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration at the Redemptorist School for Persons with Disabilities. The workshop focused on both accessible public transport and tourist attractions. Chumkhet Sawaengcharoen, head of Thammasat University’s Environmental Design for All Center, said Pattaya can become a model for accessibility. Pattaya should focus on lowering its carbon footprint by building more publictransport that is usable by all, he said.

Accidents in water parks can also happen from the negligence and lack of caution by visitors, especially when young children do not receive full attention from parents. The CPB’s campaign to ensure park safety is aimed to boost the confidence of visitors to theme parks in Hua Hin, which is an important resort town in Prachuap Khiri Khan. Visitors are encouraged to abide by safety instructions given by ride operators, while persons with concerns regarding the condition and safety of rides can inform the CPB by calling its 1166 hotline. All at Sea

Composer and teacher, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Now then, here’s a question for you. What do the following names have in common? They are Pinta, Niña and Santa María. I admit that it’s not a very difficult question, but it’s the

end of the week and I don’t want to tax your intellect too much. No doubt you’ll recall that they are the names of the three ships that left the mainland of Spain on 3rd August 1492 under the overall

command of the Genoese navigator and explorer, Christopher Columbus. Like many others, he believed that it would be possible to reach the lucrative markets of eastern Asia by heading west, as an alternative to the increasingly dangerous overland route. The three little ships were at sea for over two months before land was sighted. As we all now know, it wasn’t the land that Columbus hoped to find, but instead a small island in the present-day Bahamas. The sea has always fascinated poets, writers and artists. John Masefield’s sea poems immediately spring to mind as do the superb visionary seascapes of the brilliant but slightly dotty J. M. Turner, who was nonetheless artistically years ahead of his time. The French impressionists also found that the sea was a rich source of inspiration, especially Claude Monet, best known for his many marine paintings. Then there’s the Russian Ivan Aivazovsky, one of the great masters of marine art whose luminous canvases really seem to catch the sea in all its moods. Unlike poets and painters, few composers seem to have found inspiration from the sea, despite the fact that it covers most of the world’s surface. Mendelssohn wrote a concert overture called Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and Delius wrote a lovely orchestral piece called Sea Drift. Britten and Elgar used sea themes; Vaughan Williams wrote a Sea Symphony and the lesser-known Granville Bantock composed a Hebridean Symphony. But these are works inspired by the sea rather than ships. Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman is the name of a ghostly

ship and the British film music composer Ron Goodwin wrote a suite for band called The Tall Ships. Otherwise, music inspired by ships is about as rare as music inspired by railway trains.

Nikolai RimskyKorsakov (1844 – 1908): The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship. Yale Symphony Orchestra, cond. Toshiyuki Shimada (Duration: 10:12; Video: 1080p HD) This must be the most wellknown piece inspired by a ship, albeit a fictional one. The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship is the first movement of Scheherazade, a symphonic suite composed by RimskyKorsakov in the summer of 1887. It’s based on pictures from One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales compiled during the so-called Islamic Golden Age. Scheherazade has become the composer’s most popular work, characterized by memorable tunes and dazzling orchestration. It’s one of several of his works based on oriental themes and reflects the then current fad in Imperial Russia for all things Oriental. The work is cast in four movements and if you have YouTube configured

appropriately, it should play the remaining movements in succession. Incidentally, RimskyKorsakov had an enormous influence on Russian music. During his thirty-five years at Saint Petersburg Conservatoire he taught over 250 students including such famous names as Glazunov, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Respighi. He was a brilliant orchestrator and his book Principles of Orchestration is still in print and essential reading for all serious students of arranging and composition.

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937): Une barque sur l’océan. Gürzenich-Orchester Köln cond. FrançoisXavier Roth (Duration: 07.24; Video: 720p HD) During the 1920s and 1930s Ravel was considered France’s leading composer. Strangely enough he wrote no symphonies but a great deal of music for the piano, some of which is exceptionally difficult to play. He made many orchestral transcriptions of

his piano compositions and this is one of them. Une Barque sur l’océan is the third movement of the technically-challenging five-movement Miroirs, a suite for solo piano that he completed in 1905. The title of course means “a boat on the ocean” and it’s typical Ravel, with sweeping musical gestures and rich colourful harmonies. Like his older contemporary Claude Debussy, Ravel was greatly attracted to the sea and in the music has captured the sense of the movement of sea breeze and the rolling ocean waves. As a bonus, you also get a superb performance of one of the finest French works inspired by the sea, Debussy’s three-movement suite entitled Le Mer. It’s played immediately after the Ravel almost without a break. This is an interesting approach which seems to work as a performance strategy, for a burst of wild applause between these two serene movements would hardly be less appropriate.

Professor’s life is changed in ‘A Noise Downstairs’ Jeff Ayers Paul Davis is driving home when he sees his mentor and colleague Kenneth Hoffman driving erratically. He follows and soon learns that Hoffman has two dead bodies in his trunk. When Davis confronts him, Hoffman whacks him in the head with a shovel. The police show up just in time to stop another murder. Over eight months later, Davis still has issues with his memories and suffers from PTSD. Hoffman receives a prison sentence and shows no signs of remorse. How well do you truly know someone? Davis’ wife is forgiving but starts to show concern that he’s not healing as well as hoped. She finds an old typewriter and decides to buy it to help cheer up her husband. He has always wanted one and instantly takes to using it regularly to write his diary and help him come to terms with what happened.

The madness starts subtly at first when he begins to hear the typewriter being used in the middle of the night. He asks his wife, but she doesn’t hear it. There’s no sign of anyone breaking into the house. Is his imagination working overtime? Or has his mind snapped? Elements that are in play are somewhat visible to savvy thriller readers, and the novel echoes a classic movie from the 1960s. Proving that author Linwood Barclay is a master of manipulation, he pulls a genuinely unexpected twist that throws everything revealed up to that point entirely out the window. This thriller then kicks into high gear as it becomes a race for answers and justice. The author has cast this novel with a group of realistic characters that add to the festivities showcasing a grand design. Predictable becomes unpredictable in this compelling book that echoes the best of Harlan Coben. (AP)

FRIDAY AUGUST 3, 2018 15

Tom Cruise thwarts the apocalypse on a broken ankle Jocelyn Noveck Los Angeles (AP) - And so, fellow moviegoers: Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what Tom Cruise can — and will — do for you. The answer is anything. The man will do anything to entertain you. At age 56, when the rest of us are making chiropractor appointments and upping our corrective lenses, Cruise will jump out of a plane for you, into a lightning storm. He’ll learn to fly a helicopter for you, all for one nausea-inducing helicopter piloting stunt — yep, he’s piloting AND acting — that sends him into a death spiral in “Mission: Impossible - Fallout.” One day, if this continues, it will surely seem silly. One day, people will chuckle sympathetically at the exploits of this well-meaning but wrinkled movie star, perhaps in his 80s then, putting his life in danger to please his fans. Now, though, is not that day. With his partner, returning director-writer Christopher McQuarrie,

Cruise delivers all the above in the ridiculously entertaining “Fallout,” his sixth outing as Ethan Hunt. As for the plot, well, you may chuckle in confusion. It gets unnecessarily complicated. For most movies, this would be a much bigger problem. But because “Fallout” moves so quickly from one crazy stunt to another, it doesn’t matter. You’ll think, “Hmm, what?” But then, “Whoa! Is Tom about to jump off that building?” We begin, as always, with a new mission — this time, it arrives in a hollowed-out copy of Homer’s “Odyssey,” perhaps a reference to Hunt’s own journey. We’ll try to boil it down: The evildoers are the Apostles, terrorists who aim to nuke the world’s top religious sites — the Vatican, Jerusalem and Mecca — and bring on an apocalypse. They’re in league with Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), the criminal mastermind from the last film, who stayed alive and now wants revenge against Hunt, not to mention the global destruction thing. Hunt must get his hands on three missing plutonium

This image shows (from left) Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames in a scene from “Mission: Impossible - Fallout.” (David James/ Paramount Pictures and Skydance via AP) cores. He actually manages this, for a second — but has to give them up to save a cherished team member. Thus is launched an overarching dilemma of this installment: Should Hunt save one life that is dear to him over millions of others? We don’t get much time to ponder. Hunt has to start from scratch. His IMF team includes, as always, loyal Luther (Ving Rhames), and tech whiz Benji (the wonderful Simon

Pegg), who provides needed levity. It’s safe to say that never before has Benji’s life hung so precariously in the balance. IMF secretary Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) is back, clashing with Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett), certainly the most stylish person ever to head the CIA, onscreen or off. Sloane forcibly injects her own agent, the very handsome but shady Walker (Henry Cavill), into Hunt’s

operation, causing all sorts of complications. Crucially, we also have former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson, who made such an impression in the last film). She’s back, but working for whom, exactly? Regardless, it’s fun to watch her take down a succession of brutish men. A welcome newcomer is Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”) as the mysterious White Widow. Of course, it’s the stunts that really matter. And the scenery. Paris has always been beautiful, but there’s a certain frisson you get when arriving with Cruise by way of a plummet from a plane onto the roof of the Grand Palais. And that motorcycle chase around the Arc de Triomphe? Let’s just say that getting through that traffic circle alive on a real-life day is a Mission: Impossible. Then we’re off to London, where Cruise shattered his ankle bone filming a rooftop chase. At a recent screening, McQuarrie explained that most of what we see the

actor doing here, including that sprint, was done after the injury. Feel free to consider that as you watch. The most dramatic stunts were filmed in New Zealand, standing in for Kashmir. Many people go bungeejumping there; probably relatively few do it from a moving helicopter. We also see Cruise piloting another helicopter into a seemingly irreversible plunge. A climactic physical fight was shot in Norway, on a cliff that drops into a fjord. And Cruise’s 25,000-foot jump from a plane was filmed in Abu Dhabi. Much ink has been spent analyzing this enduring phenomenon called Tom Cruise, and what motivates him, onscreen and off. “I just want to entertain people,” he said recently. That’s one mission he can still nail. “Mission: Impossible Fallout,” a Paramount Pictures release, is unrated by the Motion Picture Association of America. Running time: 147 minutes. Three stars out of four.

“We said that’s not our story of Vietnam,” Moses recalled. “And we made a deal over a beer that we were going to have a movie called ‘Good Morning, Vietnam.’” It wasn’t easy. Hollywood producers were incensed at the idea of a comedy about Vietnam, said Moses, who co-produced the film. “I said ‘It’s not a comedy

Actor Robin Williams is shown in a scene from the 1987 movie, “Good Morning, Vietnam.” Mary Muse, the wife of his stepson Michael Muse, said Cronauer died July 18 from an age-related illness. He had lived in Troutville, Virginia, and died at a local nursing home, she said. During his service as a U.S. Air Force sergeant in Vietnam in 1965 and 1966, Cronauer opened his Armed Forces Radio show with the phrase, “Goooooood morning, Vietnam!” Williams made the refrain famous in the 1987 film, loosely based on Cronauer’s time in Saigon. The film was a departure from other Vietnam war movies that

American youths, however, were “not into drab, sterile announcements” with middleof-the-road music, Cronauer said, and the battle over the airwaves was joined. In the film, Williams quickly drops Perry Como and Lawrence Welk from his 6 a.m. playlist in favor of the Dave Clark Five. Cronauer said he loved the movie but much of it was Hollywood make-believe. Yes, I was in a restaurant shortly before the Viet Cong hit it. And yes, I did start each program by yelling,

‘Good Morning, Vietnam!’” The rest is what he delicately called “good script crafting.” Cronauer was from Pittsburgh, the son of a steelworker and a schoolteacher. After the military, he worked in radio, television and advertising. In 1979, Cronauer saw the film “Apocalypse Now” with his friend Ben Moses, who also served in Vietnam and worked at the Saigon radio station.

Williams’ performance was nominated for an Oscar. Moses said the film was a pivotal moment in changing the way Americans thought about the Vietnamese and the war.

Scorpions: ‘Animal Magnetism’ mott@pattayamail.com The Scorpions were created in 1965 by Rudolph Schenker and have always been at the forefront of German rock music. Klaus Meine has been the lead singer on every Scorpions album and has one of the most distinctive voices in the game, handling the ballads equally well as the all-out rockers. At first, Rudolph’s brother Michael (Schenker) was the lead guitarist and focal point of the band, but his shining light got noticed by those British ruffians UFO and they soon stole him away. Next on lead six string was Uli Jon Roth, but then he got recalled to the planet of his origin, so since 1978 Matthias Jabs has made the position his own. The classic era of Scorpions is thought to be from 19781992, with the line-up com-

pleted by Francis Bucholz and Herman Rareball. They were known primarily as a hard/heavy rock band, but their well crafted ballads also garnered them favorable recognition. “Animal Magnetism” was the Scorpions seventh album and the first to feature Matthias Jabs as sole lead guitarist. The album comes from the beginning of that classic period and shows off a band ready to take on the world. The songwriting is pretty evenly shared out between the group, showing that they were all heading in the same direction. But that doesn’t mean the songs all sound the same, far from it. The album opens up as it means to go on with a livewire rocker in the shape of “Make It Real”, with forceful lyrics, screaming guitars and a thunderous rhythm section. The big ballad and centerpiece of the album, “Lady Starlight”, is an emotional lament and to this date (2018) is the only Scorpions song to be recorded with strings

Klaus Miene of The Scorpions. and orchestral winds. Klaus Meine’s vocals are obviously heartfelt and probably came from experience. Rudolph Schenker holds the musical reins on this one whilst Matthias Jabs puts in a sensational solo to bring the song to its close. “The Zoo” is an early classic from the Scorpions that has probably been played at

every one of their concerts since this album was released. It is a storming rocker that is guaranteed to get the crowds going in live surroundings. The sight of Rudolph Schenker windmilling his arm around while rushing to the front of the stage is one of the most symbolic sites of rock music. The closing title track meanwhile is clearly influ-

enced by Led Zeppelin, but then everybody has their influences so why not take from the best? The Scorpions are still going strong today and Mickey Dee (ex-Motorhead) has found a nice little job on the drum stool, driving on the band from the back. All the while, rumors of the Scorpions being ready to call it a

day continue to be rife every year. They have now released eighteen studio albums and countless live albums plus compilations and DVD’s. They have played over 5,000 concerts in over 80 different countries. Who knows what is next for them. With over 100 million sales behind them they already have a fantastic legacy. Titanic director Cameron backs bid for 5,500 items from ship Gregory Katz London (AP) — Filmmaker James Cameron and Titanic discoverer Robert Ballard are backing a bid by a group of British museums to acquire a collection of 5,500 artifacts from the sunken vessel. The campaign announced last week aims to raise $20 million (15 million pounds) to buy the items from a private American company that salvaged them from the wreck. The bid was announced July 24 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the location where the ship was designed, built and launched. Ballard, who discovered the wreck in 1985, said the campaign is the “only viable option to retain the integrity” of the artifacts. He said the collection “deserved to be returned home to where its journey began.” The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. More than 1,500 passengers and crew died.

Live Your Highest Truth The Pattaya City Expats Club provided a morning based on the theme ‘Words and music’ at their Sunday, July 22 meeting, with not so much a speaker as an allaround entertainer and spiritualist to liven up the venue. Maya McClean graced the meeting with a very special morning of entertainment and enlightenment through her message to “live your highest truth;” the theme for her life coaching. Maya, whose youthful looks truly belie her age, is one of two musically talented twin sisters (“The Twinz” Maya & Nandy”) born in Sydney, Australia, but growing up in Darwin. She also spent several years in the USA. Maya is very proud of her Aussie roots and is a confident

Maya has a catalogue of music to evoke many emotions depicting the journey through her packed and interesting life so far. Maya started the morning off with a composition entitled “Flow”, a song written about living a life of being and feeling connected with the universe. Maya intermingled between music, personal thoughts, ideas and inspirations whilst creating a one on one connection with the audience; an amazing ambience of cozy intimacy including the opportunity for a holding hands joint singalong to finish. During her presentation, she treated everyone to her original songs “Love Yourself”, “Into the Sun”, “Flow” and “Beautiful”. Maya explained how in her younger years she tried the traditional route in life of achieving material possessions and the security of a job, but deep down she just felt trapped by it all and her only escape was to disappear into

nature and create music alone on the beach. With her burning desire to just follow her “American Dream” she turned her back on this lifestyle and ventured into the unknown instead. She expressed how one of her life’s ambitions was to be able to dance with no less than Michael Jackson... whilst that may have been every girl’s dream, the difference is that Maya actively pursued hers...although this dance was sadly not to transpire. Maya’s belief and passion in that journey brought her into contact with “Prince” (‘The

Being an Aussie, Maya joked that she went from being a convict slave and illegitimate child to being a true Princess by working with Prince. After her venture as a backup singer and dancer, Maya and her twin sister released their debut album “Target Practice” with their band Heroine December. With encouraging feedback from fans and industry critics alike, Maya stepped into the world of music video and film production in a big way, landing Executive Producer credits for Prince’s music video “Breakfast Can Wait.” With that success and confidence, it positioned her even more to write, direct and produce other short films and documentaries including “The Lamp,” “iPhoto”, “Hair” and “Blind”; each winning various film festival awards. Another strong passion for Maya is that of being a spiritual lady with both feet on the ground who is a Life coach. A solo artist, Maya uses her angelic voice and transformative lyrics to spread the love with a healing message. Offering workshops called, “Live Your Highest Truth” (LYHT), where she guides others in living a spiritually aligned life;

and private LYHT alignment sessions, concentrating on natural healing massage both aimed at strengthening one’s core balance. She looks to help people from all walks of life work through self-limiting thought patterns which can hold them back whilst creating inspirational connections with their true inner self. Together with concentrating on what is life’s positive possibilities, she can bring someone to allow their spiritual feelings to be a guiding influence, as well as learning to think, feel and to live more in the “now”. Maya offers coaching on an individual basis and is also planning a presentation here in Pattaya. To find out more, email her at Mayamcclean@gmail.com. The Pattaya Sports Club held their Summer Party on July 4, which coincided with American Independence Day, so naturally the theme chosen for the festivities would be a “Cowboy Night”. The summer roundup saw cowboys and cowgirls of all ages “head ‘em up and move ‘em out” to the grand ballroom at the Holiday Inn. President Peter Malhotra welcomed the guests and outlined a brief history of the PSC, stressing the support the club has received from many individuals and groups over the years. “Pattaya Sports Club has changed a lot over the years, but still remains true to what we set out to do. As a founding member of the club, I am delighted with what has been achieved over the years.

The dedication and commitment of the committee means that thousands of people’s lives have been changed for the better. All of this comes from the members, without them there would be nothing. Pattaya-area Buddhists spent two days making merit, giving alms, studying Dharma and doing good deeds on the most solemn holiday weekend of the year. July 27 and July 28 marked not only Asalaha Bucha Day and Khao Phansa, the start of Buddhist Lent, but the 66th birthday of HM the King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Temples buzzed while Walking Street went silent on normally packed Friday and Saturday nights, as alcohol was outlawed for both days. From early morning, believers dressed in white made merit by going to temples for special ceremonies, offering dried food and rice to monks and novices, listening to Dharma sermons and doing good deeds. The commemorations began early, with Banglamung District Chief Naris Niramaiwong and Nongprue Mayor Anak Pattanangam kicking off four separate Lent candle parades July 26. Civil servants, students and members of the Nongprue Women’s Development and Rumdul clubs took part, ending with religious ceremonies at Sutthawat Temple. The assembly donated candles that subsequently were given to Sutthawat, Khao Saothong, Nongprue, Kho Photong, Samakeepracharam and Boonsamphan temples. The Diana Group also donated large candles to temples in the Pattaya area and donated 1,184 kilograms of rice to the Ban Khru Ja Foundation to make merit. Managing Director Sopin Thappajug and friends donated candles to Nongprue, Suttawas and Khao Photong temples. The group also hosted a meal and donated goods to Director Palisorn Noja for the less-fortunate children at the foundation’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Abuse Center. In Chonburi, Gov. Pakarathorn Thienchai kicked off the 62nd-annual procession from the provincial hall in cooperation with the Yuvaput-Chonburi Association under the Patronage of the Supreme Patriarch. Fourteen government agencies, schools and private organizations took part

in the parade with seven groups awarded prizes. Prapatsornwittaya took first place and 6,000 baht while Chonrachamrung won 4,000 baht for second place. In addition, the governor handed out 150 scholarships and 400 large candles to temples in all 11 districts. In Sattahip, Government workers, sailors, community leaders and students took turns creating decorative Lent candles. The parade, participated in by 20 organizations, moved from Sattahip Temple to Sattahip Market, complete with tom-tom drums and dancers. Lertpanya School won the top prize in the candle festival contest, taking 10,000 baht. Asalaha Bucha falls on the 15th night of the full moon during the eighth month of the Buddhist lunar calendar, this year on July 27. Three important events occurred on the day in history: the first sermon given by the Buddha, called the “Dharmachakapavattama Sutta” concerning the “Four Noble Truths” presented to the Buddha’s first five disciples; the birth of Buddhism; and the Sangha, or the ordination of the first Buddhist monk. At Chaimongkol Temple, Abbot and Chonburi Ecclesiastical Vice Gov. Panyarattanaphon presided over the ceremony with lay leader Surat Mekavarakul. Believers brought food and deserts, rainments, large candles, light bulbs and other alms. Moreover, they listened to Dharma lectures by Jongsak Jaruwanno, deputy abbot, regarding the history of Buddhist Lent and the tradition of giving rain cloths to monks. Rain cloths are used by monks when showering and are one of the three garments of a Buddhist monk. In the evening, temples arranged candlelight “wien tien” around sermon halls, large Buddha images or temple grounds. The double holiday continued Saturday with Khao Phansa, marking the formal start of the traditional rainy season where monks are

Cannon fires a broadside Traveller’s Rest Golf Group Monday, July 23, Silky Oak Stableford Division 1 1st Bob Newman (11) 42pts 2nd John Walker (05) 40pts 3rd Shane Te-Lee (14) 40pts Division 2 1st Gerard Dogge (20) 40pts 2nd Arnold Jones (16) 39pts 3rd Eddie Townsend (19) 38pts “Keep your head over the ball, swing easy and let the club do the work.” This is advice we have all heard before! But what they fail to tell you is that to achieve this, one has to indulge in an all night bender, master the “crab walk” and struggle to string two words together. Today’s winner, Bob Newman, could barely stand up on the first tee after arriving from an “all-nighter” but he proceeded to shoot the lights out, scoring two under par of the stick and turning with

26 points. Alcohol and sleep deprivation got the better of him on the back nine as he managed only sixteen points but he had already done enough to take the win. In division two Gerard Dogge finally finished in first place with a commendable 40 points. Gerard has been struggling all season to put two nines together, turning in cards with scores of 21 & 9, 20 & 10, 19 & 8 etc but today he stayed focused for the entire round a was a deserved winner.

Tuesday, July 24, Green Valley – Stableford 1 Bob Cannon (21) 44pts 2nd Colin Smith (13) 38pts 3rd Daryll Ottaway (8) 37pts After a “slightly” intoxicated Bob Newman cleaned up the field on Monday, it was a different Bob today as st

Banner around the course from start to finish. His gross 87 (net 66) “Trumped” the rest of the field and left them wandering around the prairies amongst the bison.

Thursday, July 26, Pattana – Stableford

Bob Cannon.

John Walker.

Bob Cannon fired a few shots over the yard arm and nonchalantly blasted 44 points before the weary Green Valley surrendered to the might of the “Old Sea Dog”. Today’s Bob was not suffering from a hangover but complained of chronic pain and couldn’t even bend down to put his ball on the tee or retrieve it from the hole!

Wednesday, July 25, The Emerald – Medal 1st Bart Bingham (21) net 66 2nd Bill Reid (11) net 71 3rd Per Svenson (19) net 72 Today was our monthly TRGG-Ferdinand stroke round and once again the venue was Emerald. 1st Colin Smith (12) 36pts 2nd Masua Okado (21) 36pts 3rd Bart Bingham (20) 34pts Thursday saw a welcome return to Pattana and the layout and condition of the course was impeccable, not to mention the extravagance of the changing rooms and the quality of the food in the restaurant. The cool, calm and collected Colin Smith finished with a strong back-nine and by virtue of a count-back kept out Masua Okada and took the line honours with 36 points.

Friday, July 27, Burapha - Stableford 1st John Walker (5) 41pts

2nd Rod Ewan (15) 41pts 3rd Tony Cliff (10) 39pts Two gentlemen from Wanneroo in Western Australia battled it out for first and second place today at Burapha. Johnny Walker, (yes it’s his real name) and Rod Ewan both finished with 41 points but there could only be one winner and after the usual count-back procedures it was Johnny who walked off the victor.

Saturday, July 28, Treasure Hill – Stableford We finished the week at Treasure Hills where Johnny Walker continued his good form and finished his trip with another respectable score of 37 points. It’s always a pleasure to watch good golfers; they never appear to force the ball but just swing through the ball with confidence and let the club do the work.

Tuesday, July 24, Bangpakong Riverside – Stableford

Golfers and caddies prepare before the start of the VFW’s 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Emerald Golf Club, Saturday, July 21. On Saturday, July 21 the American Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 12146 Ban Chang - Utapao held its 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Emerald Golf Club in Ban Chang, Rayong. 36 teams competed in the Texas scramble event with a shotgun start under mostly sunny skies to help raise funds to support the VFW Post’s local veteran and community service outreach programs in and around the Ban Chang, Sattahip and Utapao areas.

There was plenty of good golf, fun, food and refreshments all offered by generous sponsors. Immediately following the scramble a buffet and awards ceremony was held at Finnegan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant on Phayun Road in Ban Chang. The winning team was The Cricket Club (Dave Stockman, Richard Holt, Simon Philbrook & Peter Park) with a fine score of net 53. Taking second spot was the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital team of Dr.

Kampanart Tangamatakul, Dr. Santa Methasin, Dr Suradel Lokduenxai & Dr. Prida Phutthasirayakorm with a net 54 and in third place came the The Snobs (Bo b Poole, Keith Wooley, Martin Grimoldy & Rod Howett) on net 55, besting The Bar B (Shawn McKeirnan, Ali Kirkwood, Bee & Dee) on a 26/28 backnine count-back. The VFW Golf Committee thanks all of their sponsors and the playing golfers for supporting this year’s event.

Fourteen of our regulars headed out to once again test their golfing skills against this fine venue. The check-in was quick and smooth and the first group was well down the first fairway before our booked starting time. With carts not allowed on fairways (maybe that’s why the grass is so good here), it was “ball in hand” for the round and other than it being fairly breezy and a very brief sprinkle of rain, the weather cooperated fully. There are several changes being implemented at Bangpakong with the removal/addition of trees and added bunkering and waste areas, plus changes to some of the internal OB’s. The caddies seem knowledgeable with regard to the changes so heeding their advice and keeping the ball in the fairways will avoid any new problem areas. With the top two on 39 points, John Pierrel (C/H 13) edged out Graham Buckingham (25) for the top step. They were followed by

John Pierrel (left) with Graham Buckingham. another pair turning in 38 points, with Don Carmody (28) continuing his recent form getting the nod over Daryl Evans (24). For the rest of the field only the consolation “Best 9’s” scores were available for recognition. These went to John Davis with 19 points on the front 9 and Dick Warberg with 20 points on the inward half.

Thursday, July 26, Crystal Bay – Stableford It had been quite some time since we ventured out to Crystal Bay, a favorite

course of many of our regulars, and playing C & B nines on this day we found the fairways dry and firm, and with the wind behind some big drives possible. The top step of the podium clearly belonged to Daryl Evans (C/H 24) who turned in an excellent score of 39 points. With the next two on 36 points, Alan Sullivan (14) edged out John Davis (12) for 2nd place, followed by 4th place Brian Parish (12) and 5th, Andre Van Dyk (17), both with 35 points. The Best 9’s for non-winners went to Don Carmody and Mick Coghlan.

Eng & Jeff take the medals PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar Monday, July 23, Royal Lakeside Stableford We hadn’t played this course in the last 6 years and it has changed somewhat in that time and all for the better, the course is in fantastic condition with greens that just roll and roll. With 4 groups playing we were away early as there was nobody else on the course at that time. There was a lovely breeze blowing that kept the heat at bay and made for some tricky shots; any bad shot was punished quite severely from time to time as there is water on most holes. The prizes went down to 3rd spot which was won by Jeff North on a count-back over Mike Stennett, both on 35 points. George Way was relegated to 2nd place, also on a count-back as John Cogan took the top spot on 37 points. There was only one ‘2’ today, coming from Bill Marsden.

Wednesday, July 25, Green Valley Monthly Medal The Haven Consultants Monthly Medal is always well supported but, unfortunately, our long time sponsor was unable to attend today. The preparations for the Singha Championship, to be played at Green Valley, are well underway and the course was looking good apart from the inconsistent bunkers, with some compacted and others with softer sand. The scores today were off the charts. Miss Sa had a very good round and came 3rd with a net 69, Miss Pin played really well for 17 holes only to take a 7 on the 18th for a net 65, losing on a

Second place was taken by the Courtyard Calvaliers of Jeff North, Geoff Couch, Chris Brendle and Graham Beaumont with a net score of 58.8, falling just short of the top spot which was taken by the team of Paul Hack, Arch Armstrong, Gary Ritchie and Bill Collis with a net score of 57.8.

Two triple bogies for Mike Stennett on the outward nine did his chances of winning no good at all but he stepped up a gear on the back nine for a net 70 and 4th place. Capt. Bob was having an excellent round until his putter decided to go on

strike and he three-putted the last three holes for a net 69, level with Auke Engelkes for 2nd place but Auke played par golf on the last 8 holes for an inward score of 37. Jeff North also came good on the way home to drop only 1 shot on the last 9 holes for a net 68. Only one 2 today and that went to Fergus Brennan.

Monday, July 23, The Emerald Stableford Not everyone’s preference here lately with the fairways in poor condition and the greens very slow but we managed to scrape by with two divisions today. Frank Grainger recorded the best score of the day, winning division 2 with 33 points while John Seton was second on 32 and Ray Kingwell third with 31. Steve Godfrey’s 32 won division 1 ahead of Ray Daws in second place two points back and Dave Horne beat Nick Evans on an 18/12 backnine countback for third after they both came in with 29 points each. Near pins went to (Div 1) Nik Evans and Dave Horne, and (Div 2) Frank Grainger and John Seton (2).

A mixed bag of scores at PAGS monthly Wednesday, July 25 started off a little overcast, with a light breeze blowing to keep the humidity down for the PAGS monthly golf tournament at Bangpra. The weather remained steady throughout the day, while the course was overall only in fair condition, certainly not in the condition of years past. The field of 91 which included only 2 ladies, continued to play at a steady pace, with rounds mostly in the 4 hour 30 minute range. As with most months, there is generally a standout performer or two on the day. This month it was hard to split Low Gross & A flight winner Gerd Riedler (10) with his 41 points and a Long Drive on #9, from 2nd place getter in A Flight, Garry Bright (12) with his 41 points, to go with an approach on 15 and

of the allotted tee time by as much as 30 minutes. We played the East and South loops which were in great condition, with greens that were just the right pace. The scoring was quite good with the worst round coming from the Kiwi connection but being their first time in this event not really a problem.

his own Long Drive on #18. Gerd just edged Garry on a countback 23/22 after Garry took an 8 for 0 on the 18th, so Gerd deserved the golfer of the day honour. Craig Duncan (13) picked up the 3rd spot in the A Flight with a steady 36 points, edging out the unlucky Rabbitohs supporter Manny Defteros on a countback.

Michael Cooney (20) got the top spot in B flight (14– 20) with another good score on the day of 39 points, while Craig Banks (14) got 2nd also with 39 points. Craig Muldoon (20) with his back 9 of 19 relegated Mikael Andersson to the also-rans after both signed for 36 points. C flight (21+) obviously struggled with the playing

conditions of the day. Tim Knight (29) led the way with a comparatively meagre total of 34 points to go with his NTP on #17. The minor placings were a hard fought affair with 3 players needing countbacks to separate them. Carl Thompson (30) and Todd Fox (35) ended up with the prizes while Sugar Ray Handford was the unlucky golfer. Supranna Dokkhaoram (30) was the successful ladies winner with a solid 37 points to go with her long putt on #3. There were several multiple technical prize winners who deserve special mention, some featuring in flight results, some not. At the top of the list were Lek Wilson, Steve Truelove and Paul Smith who all got at least 2 technicals.

(From left) Frank Grainger with Steve Harris and Mike Alleyne. taking the win in division 1 ahead of Willy van Heetvelde in second place on 34 and Bob Poole third with 33. Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Mick Alleyne and Bob Poole (2), and (Div 2) Steve Harris (2) and Lars Strom.

Friday, July 27, Eastern Star Stableford A public holiday today and it was a bit of a slow round. Paul Bray, still in form, scored 16 points on the

front nine and 23 on the back to win division 1 with 39 points overall. Frank Kelly was second on 35 points, Steve Godfrey came third with 33 and in fourth place was Paul Butler with 32. Two 34’s were fighting for first place in division 2 and with a 17/14 count-back Tony Thorne beat Glyn Evans. Peter Henshaw was third on 32 and in fourth place was John Seton with 27 points. Near pins went to Colin Aspinall and Peter Henshaw on the 13th and Paul Bray and Khalifa Nasser on the 17th. No ‘2’s once again either division so rollovers here next Friday.

Tuesday, July 24, Greenwood – Stableford

Thursday, July 2, The Emerald Stableford

On Tuesday we went the long way to Greenwood and arrived to find a beautiful wellmaintained course. That’s the reward for the long drive. We had very nice weather - it was dry and a bit cloudy with a nice cool breeze. Stephen Ford again showed his good form and won with 39 points ahead of Willem Lasonder in second place with 34. The near pins went to Dave Smith and Willem Lasonder.

The Emerald was our venue for Thursday and the course was in good condition. It was an exciting finish between Paul Davies and Willem Lasonder but Paul kept his nerves under control better and won with 37 points, beating Willem on count-back. Third was birthday boy Dave Smith who, after a very good front nine, fell away on the back-nine to finish with 36 points. The near pin awards were claimed by Stephen Ford, Daniel Oshiro and Willem Lasonder.

Monday saw the society continue its low season golf odyssey at Laem Chabang and again found the course (B & C nines) in superb condition. The forty-plus field teed off in twelve groups in hot and sultry conditions and good scores were at a premium for the three flights, cut at twelve and nineteen and a mere few managed to do better than net par on the day. In the third flight, fourth place went to Paul Garvie with 27 points, one behind Len Jones’ 28 points. Runner up was Masaaki Sugaya with 32 points and the winner was his fellow countryman Masayuki Okada with 37 points. In the second flight fourth place went to John Carling with 33 points, losing third to Kazunoyi Okamoto on countback. Second place went to Maurice Roberts with 35 points, twenty of which were recorded on the extremely tough C nine. The flight winner was Wayne Peppernell with an excellent 37 points. In the top flight John Pierrel found himself in fourth place with 35 points, a couple behind Kevin McEntee and Pete Seil, with the latter taking second on countback. The best score of the day was reserved for Paul Smith whose gross 72 would have ranked in the top twenty a day earlier in the final round of the Singha Thai tournament on the same course. Near pins went to Kevin Rogers (B5), Paul Smith (B8),

Steve Baker (2nd left) with Graeme Dunn (left), Colm O’Donovan (far right) and Phil Davies. Mick Alleyne (C5) and Pete Seil (C8) whilst the consolation brace went to Michael Olah for his best front nine of 21 points and Matt Cronin’s 17 points on the back nine.

Wednesday, July 25, Royal Lakeside Stableford 1st Steve Baker (19) 41pts 2nd Petr Petursson (6) 40pts 3 rd Maurice Roberts (14) 38pts 4th Alan Walker (28) 37pts Twenty-two golfers made the trip to Royal Lakeside and eighteen of them played in the comp. Steve Baker and Petr Petursson finished the day in first and second places, both with great scores of 41 and 40 points respectively. In third place was Maurice Roberts with 38 points, while the “Rev”, Alan Walker, defied age to score 37 points for fourth spot.

The near pins were won by Steve Baker (3), Colm O’Donovan (6), Phil Davies (12), and Maurice Roberts (15) Consolations nines went to Stuart Brown (front, 25pts) and Ray Byron (back, 19pts).

Friday, July.27, Pattavia - Stableford A Flight 1st Pete Seil (6) 41pts 2nd Stuart Thompson (16) 38pts 3rd Masao Ishikanwa (16) 38pts 4 th Maurice Roberts (14) 37pts B Flight 1st Greg Proctor (22) 40pts

2nd Colm O’Donovan (19) 38pts 3rd Alan Walker (28) 31pts 4th Mike Tottenham(21) 30pts Pattavia Century played host to our twenty seven avid golfers today and this course turned it on and the greens were just right - not too fast and not too slow. Two thirds of the field scored 30 points or better, for a field average of 32 points and that average was helped by a magnificent 41 points from Pete Seil off his handicap of #6 (gross73). Stuart Thompson’s nice steady round of 38 points saw him take second spot on a count-back from Masao Ishikawa, while Maurice Roberts had a credible 35 points to round out “A” flight. Greg Proctor carded a big 40 points to relegate Colm O’Donovan to second place in “B” flight. Then there was a big gap to third placed Alan Walker with 31 points and Mike Tottenham in fourth with 30. Four near pins went to Pete Seil (4), Simon Niven (7 and 17), and Bob Stokes (13). Consolations best nine prizes went to Phil Davies (front, 19pts) and Wayne Peppernell (back, 19pts).

Dillon & McNamara shine on Irish tour The Tara Court Golf Society Twenty-two Tara golfers took part in what has now become our annual two-day outing at Castlecomer and Mount Wolsley golf courses in Ireland on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 & 22, joining a group of our Irish friends, all of whom go to Thailand on a regular basis and play golf with us. This year we were absolutely blessed with the weather which was a lot more like Thailand than Ireland and everyone was complaining about the heat. Both courses are beautiful and although most of the group seemed to think that Castlecomer is the most difficult, for the second year the scores were actually better than at Mount Wolsley. Anthony Dillon was playing his home course in Castlecomer on Saturday and he certainly put his local knowledge to good use as he scored an excellent forty points to come out a very clear winner. member, Michael Healy, came second with thirtyseven points while Michael Byrne played to his handicap and took third with thirty-six. John Connolly came fourth with thirty-five points and Ted Murphy was fourth on thirty-three. In the ladies section Evelyn McNamara was the winner with thirty-two points and Theresa Connolly came second just one point off the pace. On Sunday at Mount Wolsley, Anthony Dillon

came in the winner once more with an excellent thirtyseven points. We then had two players with thirty-six and here Brian Lougheed won the count-back to come second and Sean McNamara had to settle for third. Declan Kelly got the fourth place with thirty-five points and Sean Hallahan was fifth with thirty-two. In the ladies section Evelyn McNamara was again the winner with thirty-three points and Mare McGuigan came

second with twenty-five. In the overall two-day comp Anthony Dillon was a very clear winner with a total of seventy seven stableford points. Sean McNamara came second with sixty eight and we then had three players on sixty-five with Brian Lougheed taking third, John Connolly fourth and Michael Byrne fifth. Evelyn McNamara was the overall winner in the ladies comp with sixty-five and Theresa Connolly came second with fifty-five. A special word of thanks goes to Michael Healy who organised everything; the golf, the accommodation and the beautiful meals in both clubhouses both before and after the golf. We had one very special member playing with us on this tour. Frank McGowan had a very serious operation earlier this year and everyone was delighted to see him looking so well and being able to join us again for the golf.

Jimenez wins Senior British Open by 1 shot St. Andrews, Scotland (AP) — Miguel Angel Jimenez became the first Spaniard to win the Senior British Open last Sunday, edging defending champion Bernhard Langer by one shot. Jimenez dropped only one stroke en route to a final round 3-under 69 and ended on 12-under 276 at the historic Old Course.

Jimenez was following in famous footsteps as the second Spaniard to win at St. Andrews after Seve Ballesteros won the British Open in 1984. “This is the place where everyone wants to win and the place where Seve won his second British Open,” Jimenez said. “It has always been my ambition to win here. It feels like I am part of history.”

The 54-year-old Jimenez played the sort of round every professional golfer dreams of on the final day at St. Andrews, and often in unpleasant — occasionally vicious — weather conditions. Langer shot a 68 to come second. Jimenez won the Regions Tradition in May, holding off a hard-charging Steve

Jutanugarn wins Ladies Scottish Open for 10th LPGA title Gullane, Scotland (AP) — Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn hit six birdies in a final round 5-under 66 to win the Ladies Scottish Open by one shot last Sunday. The 22-year-old Jutanugarn held off the challenge of Australian Minjee Lee at Gullane to claim her 10th LPGA title and third this year. Jutanugarn finished on 13under 271 and is projected to move top of the world rankings, ahead of South Koreans Inbee Park and Sung Hyun Park. She last held the No. 1 spot for two weeks in June 2017— the first Thai golfer to top the rankings. “It means a lot to me, it’s like my dream come true,” the Bangkok-born Jutanugarn told lpga.com. “I told my caddie this week, ‘I want to win on a links course one time in my life,’ and I did it so (I feel) pretty good.” Runner-up Lee remained in close pursuit of Jutanugarn throughout Sunday but was unable to make up a oneshot overnight deficit. Lee produced a bogey-free 66 but couldn’t do enough after her third-round 71. Jutanugarn has also won the Kingsmill Championship and U.S. Women’s Open this year. South Koreans Jin Young

Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn holds the trophy after winning the Ladies Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club, Gullane, Scotland, Sunday July 29. (Jane Barlow/PA via AP) Ko (67) and Haeji Kang (69) finished tied for third on 8 under, while their compatriot Amy Yang dropped to joint fifth. Yang, who shared the overnight lead with Jutanugarn, carded a 1-over 72 to finish tied for fifth with Spaniard Carlota Ciganda. Beating Jutanugarn was always going to be a tough challenge. She has now won her last nine tournaments when heading into the final round with at least a share of the lead. American golfer Tiffany Joh (70), who shot a 9-under 62 on Thursday and a 9-over

80 on Saturday, tied for eighth with compatriot Jacqui Concolino and South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace.

Stricker for his first senior major title. On Sunday, in the immediate aftermath of his second major title of the year, the selfstyled “most interesting man in golf” played down his celebrations but the prolonged raising of his arms was evidence enough of his delight. “I didn’t play too good over the last few holes,” said Jimenez. “I didn’t hit many solid shots. And I missed short putts on both the 14th and 15th. At that stage I was feeling the stress. My heart was really pumping very fast.” In search of a fourth victory in this event, Langer had

cause to regret a couple of lapses, most notably the threeputts he needed to complete the par-4 13th hole. It was his only bogey of the day, but it was enough to give Jimenez a three-shot edge that proved just too much to overcome. “Miguel played an awesome four days of golf, and he’s a very well-deserved winner,” said Langer, who closed with a 4-under 68. “I was pretty happy overall. It wasn’t easy in some of the conditions that we had.” There was ultimate disappointment for Tom Watson. Playing what could be his final competitive round at St.

Andrews, the 68-year old American — five times a British Open champion and three-times a winner of this event — had a closing 77 that left him in a lowly tie for 21st place at 1 under. Watson was still afforded a rousing send-off. “As ever, the fans were really very good to me,” Watson said. “I gave it right back to them. I appreciate what they do for me. This is a unique setting in golf, probably the most unique. You come into the town on the last hole and finish amongst all the buildings with the people hanging over the rail up there. There’s no other place like it.”

Watts scoops the treasure PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys to aim, whilst elevated greens make distance judgment particularly tough. Playing his last game before returning to Oz, Chris Dela-Mare took first place with a modest thirty-two points whilst Tony Robbins and Michael Brett took second and third respectively on count-back. Near pins went to Robbie Watts, Rab McDonald, Chris Dela-Mare, and Michael Brett.

Monday, July 23, Treasure Hill – Stableford 1st Robbie Watts 36pts 2nd Geoff Cox (19) 34pts 3rd Michael Brett (15) 30pts Throughout the ages, the game of golf has thrown up many mysteries and curiosities and today we had another to add to the list. In an age with so much focus on speed of play and talk of shot clocks and penalties for slow play, it is hard to understand how four players in carts could fall more than one hour behind the group ahead of them. Even more surprising when asked about it they didn’t think they played slowly. Luckily they were our last group otherwise some terse words may have been exchanged. As always, Treasure Hill served up a stern test of golf for the fourteen Bunker Boys who attended and it’s fair to say that most didn’t step up to meet the challenge, with scores disappointingly low. No one could blame the course which was in its usual good condition. More than most, this is a course that requires you to play always with the next shot in mind, being in the wrong place on the fairway usually means you are punished with no clear look at the green for your next. Robbie Watts mastered the conditions best taking first place with thirtysix points, a good score on this course. Second went to Geoff Cox on thirtythree whilst in third was Michael Brett on count-back from a couple of others. Near pins were taken by Les Hall, Robbie Watts, and Michael Brett.

On the drive into the clubhouse, we passed the Valley Course which looked in beautiful condition and must surely be on our list in the future. 1st Jimmy Carr (16) 36pts 2nd Geoff Cox (19) 35pts 3rd Raleigh Gosney (19) 34pts Today’s round was played at the Mountain Shadow course where a good field of thirteen took part. Play commenced on time and continued without delay to completion within three and a half hours for all but our last group. It’s becoming a regular thing to find our last group for some unknown reason losing several holes on the rest of the field. Another recent phenomenon continued again this week with two instances of balls disappearing on the fairway, something strange is going on. A sparkling back nine of twenty-two points saw Jimmy Carr take first place today with thirty-six points. Second, went to Geoff Cox one stroke adrift whilst the recently returned Raleigh Gosney brought up the rear with thirtyfour. Not on did Raleigh get in the winner’s circle on his first outing he also managed two near pins whilst Neil Carter took the other two.

Undeterred by skeptical fans, Thomas takes Tour title Andrew Dampf and Ciaran Fahey Paris (AP) — The spits and the jeers. The eggs thrown at team cars. The attempts to unbalance riders while riding up the most grueling climbs. Geraint Thomas never flinched at whatever fans — or his rivals — threw at him or Team Sky. The Welsh rider was the steadiest rider from the start, the strongest in the Alps and the Pyrenees. Last Sunday he concluded his transformation from a support rider into a champion of cycling’s biggest race by claiming his first Tour de France title. “With the boys, that’s the main thing for the whole three weeks, we stuck together through some tough times, stayed strong,” Thomas said. “Everything just clicked this race.” Thomas successfully defended his lead of 1 minute, 51 seconds over secondplaced Tom Dumoulin in the mostly ceremonial final stage. Four-time champion Chris Froome, Thomas’s teammate, finished third, 2:24 behind. Froome rode next to Thomas as they crossed the line and applauded. Thomas was a support rider during Froome’s four victories but he emerged as Sky’s strongest rider in this race when Froome crashed early on and couldn’t keep up in the mountains. Sky — and consequently Thomas — became a target for many fans due to an asthma drug case involving Froome, stemming from last

year’s Spanish Vuelta. Even though Froome was cleared of doping days before the start of the Tour, that didn’t stop some fans from abusing the British team’s riders throughout the three-week race. “When there is negativity like that, it brings us as a team closer together,” Froome said. “It feels like it’s us against the rest of the world. ... You can choose to let it get to you or you can choose to let it motivate you, and we let it motivate us.” Thomas stormed into the lead by winning back-toback mountain stages in the Alps, including the iconic climb up Alpe d’Huez, then defended his advantage in the Pyrenees. During the podium ceremony, Thomas draped the flag of Wales over his shoulders, then ended his victory speech with a mic drop. “All I can say is that I do it the right way,” Thomas said when asked about concerns of alleged doping within Sky. “We train super hard and there’s nothing I can say that will prove it. I’ve just got to keep doing what I’m doing. It will stand the test of time.” An all-around rider who began his career on the track, the 32-year-old Thomas helped Britain to gold medals in team pursuit at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics before turning his full attention to road racing. “I have my own goals and I kept doing what I’m doing and kept focused on that. ... Obviously it’s not nice to hear (the jeers) but I do what I do and focus on myself,” Thomas said. “It’s easy to get wrapped up in it or get

victory for many years,” Kristoff said. “I’ve been close many times before but never managed to beat the faster guys like (Mark) Cavendish,

(Andre) Greipel, or (Marcel) Kittel, but today they’re not here, they’re out after the mountains, and today I was the fastest, so I’m super happy.” The mostly flat 116-kilometer leg began in Houilles just outside Paris and concluded with nine laps up and down the Champs-Elysees. Many spectators along the Champs-Elysees held their arms high to record the riders on their smart phones as they went past on the cobblestones, and there were more cheers when 11 jets flew overhead leaving trails in the blue, white and red colors of the French flag. Glenn Roberts, from Newtown in mid-Wales, was in attendance with his wife and children. The family timed their summer vacation to coincide with the Tour’s finish. “Thomas was in the yellow when we left Wales but we didn’t know if he was going to keep it. We thought Froome was going to win it, if I’m being honest,” Roberts said. “It’s the best thing a Welshman has ever done in sport.”

Mikey Garcia trounces Robert Easter, nabs IBF 135-pound belt Los Angeles (AP) — Mikey Garcia added the IBF lightweight belt to his WBC title last Saturday, dominating the previously unbeaten Robert Easter for a clear unanimous decision victory. Garcia (39-0) knocked down Easter in the third round and controlled long stretches of the bout at Staples Center in Los Angeles. He unified the two 135-pound titles with flair in his first fight in his native California in seven years. The judges all favored Garcia, scoring it 116-111, 117-110 and 118-109. The 30-year-old Garcia has been a world champion in four weight classes, and his combination of precision and power was too much for Easter (21-1). Garcia knocked down Easter with a nasty left hook in the third round and nearly finished the bout moments later. Garcia couldn’t get his first knockout since January 2017, but still delivered another outstanding performance. His victory in a unification bout put him in a rare collection of talents to accomplish the feat, including Roberto Duran, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker and Oscar De La Hoya. The bout was also the first time two previously unbeaten boxers had fought in a lightweight unification bout. “It’s a great accomplishment being here in LA,” Garcia said. “I was in control most of the fight, and I did what I had to do. I knew he was a tough opponent.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles new CEO Electric technology hits the Eastern Seaboard Numerous applications have been received by the Board of Investment (BoI) all related to the future of electric cars. If you thought that e-power was a long way away, think again. Applications to the government body total 30 bn. Of that figure, 11 bn is from Nissan and 6 bn from Honda. The spectrum covers BEV’s, HEV’s (Nissan, Honda and Toyota), PHEV’s (Mercedes and BMW), batteries (Nissan). By 2020 you will be seeing a lot more EV’s on our roads, and our exports will be subsequently higher as the market expands world wide.

Charging station. And here’s a hot tip: invent stand-alone recharging stations. I have no idea what

technology would be involved – that’s why I said “invent”.

What did we learn from the Hungarian GP? Well we learned that the Mercedes Number 2 driver (make no mistake about that, he is the Number 2) can be a Bott-Ass under pressure. Extreme pressure, but more than you and I would like to be harassed by. Back to the front, and there were two races. One had Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) out front, on his own and nobody near him. The other race was between everybody else. In fact, Vettel in the Ferrari did come second, but 17 seconds behind Hamilton. The Hungarian GP was notable in the fact that it rained during Qualifying and it ended up as a lottery as to where you went out for the important position setting lap. Hamilton did scrape in, in front of Bottas and the two Ferraris of Vettel and Raikkonen. Come race day and it was imperative that at least one of the Ferraris get in front of Hamilton at the start, but neither did. In fact the two Mercedes kept station with Hamilton running away and Bottas riding shotgun to block Vettel and Raikkonen. Back in the pack there was plenty of close racing, or running in single file to be truthful.

However, “running” was not what Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was doing, with his hand grenade Renault engine giving up after five laps. The team manager Christian Horner expressed his displeasure at yet another engine to go pop! They can do no worse with the Honda engines next year. The other Red Bull saw Daniel Ricciardo grab it by the horns and drag it up from 13th to 4th, surviving a first lap thump and then a torpedo by Bottas on the second last lap, for which Bottas received a 10 second penalty. As the Hungaroring is narrow, with many corners, it is very difficult for the drivers to pass each other, so this results in high speed processions, which it was for most of the runners. Even if nominally faster, the straights are not long enough for a driver to pass the car in front. If new owners Liberty Media wants action on the tracks, perhaps it is time to axe the Hungaroring. And while they are at it, Monaco should go too, or make it a no-points GP. There is now an F1 Holiday with the next GP being at Spa in Belgium on August 26.

Autotrivia Quiz Last week I asked, which current F1 manufacturer used balsa wood in the hull? It was McLaren who used a sandwich of aluminium alloy and end grain balsa in their M2B of 1966. So to this week. Why did James Watt have a team of horses and what was the significance to the motor industry? For a free beer at the next car Club meeting (August 13) at Jamesons Irish Pub, be

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV appointed a new CEO after the health of long-time leader Sergio Marchionne unexpectedly deteriorated after surgery, finishing with his death last weekend. Although it has not been spelled out, I think he must have had a massive stroke. The newly appointed CEO is Mike Manley, formerly head of the Jeep and Ram brands, and who took over as CEO of the ItalianAmerican company effective immediately. “Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV communicates with profound sorrow that during the course of this week unexpected complications arose while Mr. Marchionne was recovering from surgery and that these have worsened significantly in recent hours,” the automaker said in a statement. “As a consequence, Mr. Marchionne will be unable to return to work.” FCA Chairman John Elkann said in a statement he is “profoundly saddened to learn of Sergio’s state of health. It is a situation that was unthinkable until a few hours ago, and one that leaves us all with a real sense of injustice.” “The iconic reign of Sergio Marchionne is over at FCA,” said Rebecca Lindland, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book. “Mike Manley is a very worthy replacement, with his global expertise and experience running Jeep, especially the highly successful launch of the Jeep Wrangler this year. While running FCA is a wider, broader job than running Jeep and Ram, Manley has been a loyal and worthy lieutenant to Marchionne for years.” “Mike Manley is a logical, solid choice to replace Marchionne in light of the success of Jeep and FCA’s future being dependent on the success of Jeep and other global brands,” said Michelle Krebs, analyst with Kelley Blue Book. Marchionne’s health condition sped up the timeline for a succession decision. He had already announced he was planning to leave by early next year.

Sergio Marchionne. Marchionne, known for his rumpled sweaters and nonstop work habits, is one of the longest-serving CEOs in the auto industry. He was appointed in 2004 as the fifth Fiat chief in a two-year period. He managed to return the carmaker to profit in 2005 by cutting costs, laying off workers and then looking for a partner. The company had lost more than 6 billion euros ($7.04 billion) in 2003. With the acquisition of Chrysler in 2014, completing a five-year process, he gave Fiat the global scale needed to survive. Still, as the world’s seventh-largest automaker, the company may lack the size it needs to compete in an industry being reinvented by the emergence of autonomous driving and electrification. “The bulk of this business is producing earnings which are almost genetically predetermined,” Marchionne had said, “because of decisions that have been made in the past and which are now being executed in a market where that call has been made. The reality is 80 percent of the earnings of this house in 2022 are only going to come from the four brands that we heard about today.” Those plans include efforts to leverage the highly profitable Jeep and Ram brands in the U.S. and abroad with higher-margin products that fill holes in their respective portfolios.

Porsche stuffs more neddies in Panamera, Cayman and 911 VIN numbers are a way of identifying a model and much more than just a way to track a vehicle. Look upon VIN as a ‘secret’ code. The news comes from VIN data submitted by Porsche to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US. The three new models are expected within the next year, and are the Panamera GTS, 718 Cayman T and the 911 Speedster. The first of the upcoming new model Porsches is the Panamera GTS, available in both lift-back and ‘Sport Turismo’ wagon body styles. US vehicle information number data confirms that the model exists, suggesting it will retain a development of the 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 used by the Panamera 4S, which has 324 kW of power and 550 Nm of torque. However, the GTS will get a performance increase to around 340 kW and 570 Nm. The next Porsche detailed by the US VIN information is a 718 Cayman T set to sit

Redemptorist College filled with sporting achievers

The Opening Ceremony.

Derek Franklin Father Michael presents the runners-up with their trophy.

Female 400m race.

The annual two day sporting competition recently took place at the Pattaya Redemptorist Technological College for People with Disabilities, with more than one hundred and fifty students taking part. As in previous years the students were divided into four coloured teams, and points were competed for in a variety of sports: athletics, field (shot, javelin and discus), swimming, boccia, wheelchair fencing, petanque, wheelchair basketball and two types of volleyball, standing and sitting. The team sport heats and finals had taken place over several weeks so the two day competitions were taken up with mostly the athletics, swimming and field events. As there are many categories of disability, so there are many races for each competition. In the 100m race for men there is the race for wheelchair users with upper body strength and one for those with a weak upper body. There is a 100m running race for amputees, lower and upper limbs, upper body weakness and for those

Throwing for points. with cerebral palsy. And after the 100m race there is also the 200m, 400m, 800m and the 1500m races with all the various categories. It’s been said many times that taking part in a sport is not all about winning, but for the athlete who trains and works hard every day then crossing the finish line first and winning points for your team is the one and only goal. But there are some athletes who, due to the severity of their disability, may have no chance of ever winning a race; but they take part because even coming last in a race earns your team at least one point.

Swimmer, basketball player, wheelchair racer; top athlete of the two day event. The eventual winners were the Green Team, and if you were in Pattaya and listening quietly at 4 p.m. on the afternoon of the 26th of July, you may just have heard them cheering and screaming in delight; they were so loud and excited. Over the years the school has produced many athletes

who have gone on to represent the school and province at national level. A few have gone on to participate in the S.E. Asia Games, Asian Games and the Paralympics, and bring back to Pattaya their medals and their influence. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org

VOL. XXVI No. 31

La Bocca A genuine Italian restaurant & Pizzeria There are ‘ethnic’ restaurants catering for just about every world cuisine in Pattaya, but most lose their nationality after a couple of years. One which has not, is La Bocca, an authentic Italian restaurant run by Stefano, a restaurateur who catches his own fish, so you know the fish are fresh. Of course, sometimes there’s no fish, so ask. The ambience at La Bocca is completely Italian. All it needs is the Trevi Fountain (built in 1629) and an Italian tenor and you have the entire Italian package. In a back corner of the restaurant nestles the woodfired pizza oven, complete with its dedicated pizzaiolo (the man who makes pizzas). With a range of 12 pizzas and a steady flow of pizza enthusiasts he works hard. La Bocca (the mouth) also has a mezzanine floor for

when the High Season returns. Along one wall is the wine cellar, and surprise surprise, the wines are Italian, or at least 99 percent of them. Stefano does allow some Australian wines to be used as ‘house wines’. We chose the archetypal Italian wine – a Chianti, which after 10 minutes breathing time was a very pleasant

drop. If you are looking for the house wine, it is B. 125 glass, 330 half liter, 630 one liter. Cheap guzzling. As well as the air-con restaurant indoors, there is a small al fresco area outside for the dedicated fumatori di sigarette. So how do you find La Bocca? Turn right at the Vatican and follow the signs?

“Small pasta ‘ears’ with a homemade sausage and smoked sauce, Scarmoza cheese, enclosed in pizza crust “Pastura”, pasta baked with Italian sausage and cheese sauce face with pizza dough.” Having cut your teeth on that one, try “Gran grigliata mista (min 2 persone) controfiletto, carra di maiale, salsicce e pollo.”

The lovely waitress Kanista.

A four cheese pizza with extra salami.

The hard working pizzaiolo.

A dessert to die for.

The shorter way is to come down Thappraya Road, through the traffic lights at the Thepprasit T junction and down to the bottom and La Bocca is on your left. A very well known marker there is known as Hanuman (the magic monkey), but this is actually incorrect. The statue is of Machanu (the son of a mermaid princess) recognizable by the fish tail. The menu is in Italian, English and Russian. Try with the Italian description first. A fine example is “Orecchiette al sugo di salsiccia e scamorza affumicata servito in crosta di pan pizza.” In English,

Or in English, “Grand mixed grill (2 persons) ribeye, pork ribs, sausages and chicken large set of grilled specialties. Suffice to say the majority items on the menu are truly Italian. However there are other Euro items as well as a couple of pages of Thai favorites. There are also dedicated vegetarian dishes as well. The menu is large, and you are guaranteed to find something to your liking. There is also a large menu blackboard. Some of the items include cordon blue ham, cheese and truffle cream at B. 450 and pasta saffron shrimp

and zucchini B. 410. The majority of dishes are around B. 400. We began with a large plate of Parma ham and buffalo mozzarella, which was almost a meal in itself, then moved to a pizza with extra salami, and it was, and it was excellent as well. The pizza is made as you watch and was one of the best around town. Junior taster number 1 then went for the pasta, a very full plate, while taster number 2 gave up at that point, just too full, but not so full that a dessert was out of the question.

There is no doubt in our minds that La Bocca is presenting genuine Italian fare in a genuine Italian restaurant. If there is fish on the evening of your visit, it is fresh out of Stefano’s boat. We loved the Italian experience. Highly recommended. Do go. (Stefano should have three Mini’s parked outside, red, white and blue, from the great movie, the Italian Job.) La Bocca, 315/172 Thappraya Road, Jomtien Beach, Pattaya 20150, telephone 038 303 530, street-side parking, open 12 noon until 11.30 p.m.

Thousands join walk-run Harding makes it two for two event to honor HM the King with Royal Cup triumph

Chonburi Governor Pakarathorn Thienchai pays respects to an image of HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun prior to the start of the walk-run.

Walkers and runners turned out in droves last weekend to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun. A special walk-run event was held in Chonburi city starting from outside the Governor’s House and featured a 10-km mini-marathon and a 3-km fun run. Runners were separated into various age and gender related brackets and the top three in each group were awarded prizes to go along with commemorative medals. Chonburi Governor Pakarathorn Thienchai was on hand at 4am Sunday morning to set the runners on their way, one day after His Majesty the King officially celebrated his 66 th birthday. It is estimated that up to 10,000 citizens took part in the event to celebrate the occasion and pay respects to the Thai monarch.

Justin Harding of South Africa cruised to a six-shot victory at the Royal Cup in Pattaya last Sunday to become the first player since 2011 to win back-to-back titles on the Asian Tour. The in-form Harding fired a three-under-par 67 in the final round of the US$500,000 Asian Tour event at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club. With a winning total of 14-under-par 266, Harding became the first player to win twice in his first two starts in Asia. The 32-year-old, who won the BANK BRI Indonesia Open three weeks ago, took home the winner’s purse of US$90,000 while earning his fourth title in a span of two months. Defending champion Shiv Kapur of India battled to a 71 to share second place with Australia’s Jake McLeod (67), Kurt Kitayama (67) of the United States and Chapchai Nirat, who finished as the highest ranked local player following a final round 68. “It’s been a good little run, I can’t really put into words right now,” said Harding

South Africa’s Justin Harding poses with the Royal Cup trophy at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya, Sunday, July 29. after collecting the Royal Cup trophy. “Two weeks ago it was a surprise, but obviously I’ve been playing nicely and just tried to get three good rounds starting the week and put myself in position and then get the job done. I’m enjoying this run right now. The courses out here in Asia allow me to play strategically and I’m

benefitting so I don’t find that I am trying too hard and just letting it come to me.” The Royal Cup is held in honour of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, who celebrated his 66th birthday on Saturday, July 28. (Report & photo courtesy Asian Tour)

Budapest, Hungary (AP) — Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position last Sunday to extend his championship lead over Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton was untroubled as he secured a second straight win, fifth of the season and 67th overall. But Mercedes missed out on a 1-2 as Valtteri Bottas was overtaken by Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen with five laps to go. Bottas and Vettel touched during the overtaking move, with some debris flying off the Mercedes. “I got a hit from behind. I wasn’t sure what was going on,” Vettel said. “Lucky that the car wasn’t broken and we could carry on.” In a dramatic finish, Bottas lost control of his car as he bumped Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull off the track as he was about to be overtaken. Bottas was told on team radio to give the position back to Ricciardo, who finished a commendable fourth after starting 12th. Bottas risked further penalty after being summoned to speak to stewards over the incident. Ricciardo’s teammate, Max Verstappen, launched a se-

British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes AMG GP steers his car during the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix at the Hungaroring circuit, in Mogyorod, northeast of Budapest, Hungary, Sunday, July 29. (Zsolt Czegledi/MTI via AP) ries of expletives after engine failure curtailed his race after eight laps. It is the fourth time Verstappen has failed to finish this season. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner blamed the Renault engine as being substandard. Red Bull is splitting with Renault and working with Honda next season. Hamilton now leads Vettel by 24 points after 12 of 21 races. They will continue their battle for a fifth F1 title when the championship resumes at the Belgian GP on Aug. 26. Vettel and Raikkonen drove well considering both endured a botched pit stop because of a slow tire change.

Ferrari team strategy meant Raikkonen pitted twice for new tires and — on a scorching hot day — Ferrari bafflingly forgot to properly attach his drinks supply. Hamilton secured pole with a brilliant last lap in the rain on Saturday, while Vettel started a modest fourth behind Raikkonen and Bottas. The long straight up to Turn 1 was Ferrari’s best and — ultimately — only chance of overtaking Hamilton. But he comfortably held position while Vettel jumped ahead of Raikkonen and almost caught Bottas. Note: For more on the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, turn to Automania on page 31.
