Presentación / Introduction

Esta historia comenzó en el aire, durante uno de los tantos vuelos que se hicieron desde Santiago hasta Concepción para apoyar la reconstrucción de la ciudad más damnificada por el terremoto y posterior tsunami del 27 de febrero de 2010. En el trayecto, arriba de una avioneta, alguien hizo el ejercicio de mirar hacia abajo y se encontró con un pueblo lo suficientemente lejos de todo para merecer al menos un poco de atención. Ese pueblo se llama Vichuquén –‘lugar aislado’, en mapudungun–, y en el siguiente viaje dejó de ser un caserío perdido en el camino para convertirse en objeto y referente de la reconstrucción patrimonial.

Fue entonces cuando la Corporación Patrimonio Cultural de Chile, con el apoyo de Barrick, el Ministerio de Vivienda, el Serviu, el Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales y la Municipalidad de Vichuquén, asumió el desafío de recuperar más de una veintena de viviendas patrimoniales ubicadas en su casco histórico, declarado Zona Típica en 1990, devolviéndoles a sus habitantes el hogar y la tranquilidad arrebatados por la catástrofe.

Uniendo y potenciando de forma inédita la voluntad pública y privada, sumando el aporte estatal al de la empresa privada, con la gestión de una institución cultural especializada, este proyecto, liderado por profesionales de alto nivel, logró rescatar y poner de relieve un valioso patrimonio arquitectónico, dando trabajo y, al mismo tiempo, fortaleciendo el sentido de identidad y pertenencia en esta localidad, al revelar a sus habitantes el valor de sus casas y de su pueblo.

Respetar los materiales originales, la estructura y el diseño de estas edificaciones coloniales de adobe, que alineadas en fachadas continuas definen el rostro entrañable de los pueblos chilenos de la zona centro-sur, así como trabajar en conjunto con la comunidad, que conformó la mano de obra, han sido factores claves en el desarrollo de este proyecto. Ello ha permitido garantizar no sólo la sobrevivencia del patrimonio tangible, sino también, y lo que es fundamental, la transmisión y proyección del patrimonio inmaterial que lo sustenta, cual es la tradición constructiva de nuestra arquitectura en barro.

Con esta doble aspiración, los participantes en la restauración se involucraron más allá de los límites del proyecto, en la reparación de otros edificios, como las escuelas y el internado de Vichuquén, mientras que especialistas peruanos ofrecieron a los maestros locales capacitación en la construcción en adobe sismorresistente, capaz de sortear los embates de un movimiento telúrico.

Es así como, mediante un trabajo colectivo minucioso y comprometido, recuperando cada teja, cada colihue y trozo de madera, estas antiguas casas renacieron de las ruinas, otorgando un renovado semblante a este pueblo fundado en 1585 a orillas del lago del mismo nombre, donde trescientos años antes habían llegado los españoles, encontrando asentamientos tanto mapuches como incas.

La reconstrucción de Vichuquén es para nosotros la metáfora de otra reconstrucción: aquella del sentido de unidad de todos los actores sociales del país en torno al cariño por nuestro patrimonio, condición ineludible para su protección y trascendencia.

En este libro hemos tratado de transmitir, de la manera más fiel posible, a través de entrevistas, textos y fotos, el trabajo mancomunado de todas las instituciones involucradas, y sobre todo de ese gran equipo humano, durante más de tres años, entendiendo que reconstruir un pueblo no sólo es levantar sus casas, sino también tradiciones familiares y vidas en el interior de ellas.

CORPORACIÓN PATRIMONIO CULTURAL DE CHILE

This story began in the air, during one of the many flights made between Santiago and Concepción to support the reconstruction of the city that was damaged the most by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami of 27 February 2010. During one of these journeys, aboard a small plane, someone carried out the exercise of looking down, and saw a village far enough away from everything to merit at least a bit of attention. That village was Vichuquén, “isolated place” in the Mapudungun language, though by the following trip it was no longer a little hamlet lost on a faraway road. Quite the opposite, in fact, for it would soon become the object of and reference point for patrimonial reconstruction.

This was when the Chilean Cultural Heritage Corporation, with the support of Barrick, the Ministry of Housing, the Urbanization and Housing Service, the Council of National Landmarks and the Municipality of Vichuquén took on the challenge of recovering over twenty patrimonial buildings located in the village’s historic quarter, which had been declared an official Historic District in 1990. This was how the residents of Vichuquén got their homes and their peace of mind back after the earthquake had robbed them of both.

An unprecedented initiative that sparked and united public and private goodwill efforts, with both state support and private funding as well as the management expertise of a specialized cultural institution, this project was led by professionals of the highest caliber who helped rescue and draw attention to a truly singular architectural heritage. This project gave jobs to people but it also reinforced the feeling of identity and belonging in the village by showing its residents the true value of the houses and the hamlet they call home.

A number of factors were key to the successful evolution of this project. One was the respect for the structure, design and original materials of these colonial adobe constructions which, lined up in continuous façades, define the enchanting landscape of the villages of central-southern Chile. Another factor was the project’s focus on collaboration with the local community, the residents of which comprised the work force that got the job done. This permitted the survival of Vichuquén’s tangible patrimony as well as the transmission and projection of the intangible patrimony upon which the physical structures rest—in other words, the local tradition of construction in clay, which is every bit as important as the buildings themselves.

Inspired by this dual aspiration, those who participated in this restoration gave of themselves far beyond the official demands of the project, repairing other buildings such as Vichuquén’s schools and student residence, while specialists from Perú offered training to local construction professionals in earthquake-resistant adobe construction processes that would allow them to build structures capable of withstanding an assault of seismic activity.

Through a committed, meticulous collective effort, reclaiming each tile, each Colihue tree, and each plank of wood, these houses were reborn out of the ruins, and in the process brought a new face to the village founded in 1585 at the edge of the lake of the same name, where three hundred years earlier the Spanish had arrived to discover settlements of Mapuche and Incan dwellers.

For us, the reconstruction of Vichuquén is a metaphor for another reconstruction: that of the sense of unity shared by all the social actors in the country who were moved to action by their genuine affection and love for the heritage of this country. Without these sentiments and this unity, such conservation and transcendence would have been impossible.

In this book we have done our best to express, as faithfully as we could, through interviews, narratives and photographs, the joint work of all the institutions involved in the reconstruction project, and most especially we wish to fully acknowledge the great human team that worked together for over three years, bound by the knowledge that rebuilding a village is about rebuilding houses but, just as importantly, rebuilding the family traditions and lives that exist and thrive inside that village.

La mística del adobe The adobe mystique

Cuando uno llega a Vichuquén, se encuentra con un pueblo que tiene una encomiable voluntad de seguir existiendo, a pesar de todas las dificultades que le ha puesto el destino. El lugar está habitado desde hace centurias, incluso desde antes de que a comienzos del siglo XV los incas se adentraran hasta la zona central de Chile en busca de oro y materias primas para satisfacer las necesidades imperiales. Vichuquén, cuyo nombre podría derivarse del mapudungun (‘lugar aislado’) o del quechua (‘ascender tortuoso’), ya es parte del paisaje entre los cerros y la costa de la Región del Maule. Esos mismos cerros que lo protegen y también lo ocultan del paso del tiempo y sus caprichos.

Los incas establecieron ahí un asentamiento mitimae, con pobladores traídos de distintos rincones del imperio que se sumaron a grupos indígenas dispersos en el valle surcado por los esteros Cardilla y Uraco, que al unirse conforman el estero Vichuquén.

La aldea como tal surgió durante el periodo de la Colonia como un pueblo de traza libre. Su expansión empezó de manera espontánea alrededor de un camino de uso prehispánico, el denominado Collasuyo, que después se convertiría en la calle Comercio y que vivió su época de mayor esplendor entre 1865 y 1928, a raíz de su designación como cabecera de departamento en la provincia de Curicó. En ese momento crucial, Vichuquén alcanzó a tener sueños de grandeza, en esos años caracterizados por una floreciente vida social y, precisamente, la edificación de las casas que marcarían la fisonomía urbana que permanece y le da su aspecto único en la actualidad: construcciones que se integran de forma armónica, respetuosa y equilibrada con la topografía del lugar y sus fuertes desniveles, con corredores que favorecen el diálogo entre el espacio público y la vida privada. Desde el punto de vista urbano, resultó decisivo el trabajo del arquitecto Ricardo Brown, quien en 1870 ordenó el caserío en torno a la avenida principal, estableció la plaza y trazó la manzana para romper con la linealidad del pueblo, sobre todo a partir de las construcciones de fachada continua de la calle que hoy lleva el nombre de Arturo Prat.

To arrive at the village of Vichuquén is to enter a village with an admirable will to survive, despite the many obstacles fate has laid in its path. Vichuquén has been inhabited for centuries, even before the early fifteenth century, when the Incas penetrated Chile’s central region in the quest for gold and raw materials that might satisfy imperial needs. Vichuquén, whose name might be derived from the Mapudungun term meaning ‘isolated place’ or the Quechua ‘torturous ascent’, has long since been a part of the landscape between the coastline and the hills of Chile’s Maule region—hills that have both protected the town and hidden it from the passage of time and its vagaries.

The Incas established a mitimae settlement here, with settlers brought in from various corners of the empire who joined the groups of indigenous people scattered across the valley cleaved by the Cardilla and Uraco estuaries that come together to form the Vichuquén estuary.

The village as such came into its own during the Colonial period, with an open-grid layout. Its expansion began spontaneously around a pre-Hispanic road called Collasuyo that would later become Comercio Street, a thoroughfare that had its golden age between 1865 and 1928, thanks to its designation as a district capital of Curicó province. At that critical juncture, Vichuquén acquired a taste for certain dreams of grandeur; in those years the village was known for its sparkling social life and the construction of houses that would ultimately characterize the urban physiognomy that lends Vichuquén the distinctive appearance it retains to this day. Together, these constructions comprise a harmonious complex that respects and assimilates the local topography with its steep slopes, through corridors that invite dialogue between public space and private life. From an urban point of view, the work of architect Ricardo Brown was most decisive: in 1870 Brown organized the hamlet along the main avenue; established the town square; and laid out the city block to break through the linearity of the village, most particularly with the continuous-façade constructions on the street that now bears the name of Arturo Prat.

Las expectativas vichuqueninas llegaron a su punto más alto durante la visita del presidente José Manuel Balmaceda en el otoño de 1888. Según el periódico local El Buen Consejo, el viaje se realizó en coche desde Curicó, con una parada en Licantén, y el mandatario fue recibido por una doble fila de lanceros dispuestos para su custodia. Según testimonios de la tradición oral, se cree que Balmaceda se hospedó en la casa del vecino José Arangua (hoy propiedad del arquitecto Claudio Ferrari) y que por la noche se hizo un baile en su honor con la élite de la zona. Fue, sin duda, un día maravilloso: el presidente quería construir un puerto militar en la rada de Llico, canalizar desde ahí el acceso al lago y construir una línea férrea que uniera la franja costera con el valle de Curicó. De manera casi inevitable, Vichuquén iba a convertirse en un punto de importancia estratégica. Eso, al menos, pensaban sus habitantes. Balmaceda, sin embargo, murió en 1891 y nadie volvió a hablar de sus planes portuarios para Llico.

Al desistir el gobierno central de este proyecto, también se tomó nota de las dificultades de conectividad y comunicación que afectaban a Vichuquén.

La actividad económica empezó a decaer lentamente hasta que se tomó la decisión de trasladar el centro administrativo de la provincia. El 12 de junio de 1930, dos años después del decreto que le arrebató su condición de cabecera, el invierno también intentó llevarse el antiguo señorío del pueblo: la inundación de los esteros circundantes arruinó casi todas las construcciones de la parte baja. Sólo resistieron las casas de adobe que se habían levantado en la pequeña loma de la calle Comercio y aquellas que se instalaron en la falda del cerro más cercano, en lo que hoy son las calles Arturo Prat y Balmaceda. Son las viviendas patrimoniales que con orgullo se enfrentaron al tiempo y a las sucesivas inclemencias de la naturaleza, como los terremotos de 1939 y 1985, y que en 1990 consiguieron que Vichuquén fuera declarado Zona Típica durante el gobierno del presidente Patricio Aylwin, debido a que “el pueblo ha mantenido en alto grado sus características originales, lo que le permite presentar un conjunto unitario en su aspecto”, sumado “al interés arquitectónico de un gran número de viviendas y a la originalidad de su organización urbana”.

Hasta el verano de 2010, Vichuquén era el resultado de la obstinación del adobe y de la lucha de unos pocos por salvaguardar la historia que aún pueden contar sus viejos corredores en la avenida principal.

El terremoto del 27 de febrero de 2010, sin embargo, dejó todo ese relato al borde del colapso definitivo.

La cercanía y la violencia del movimiento telúrico sacudieron al pueblo desde sus cimientos: una prueba demasiado fuerte para las centenarias casas de una localidad que a duras penas lograba defenderse del olvido. Muchos pensaron en los primeros días que lo mejor sería cerrar los ojos, echar todo abajo y comenzar de nuevo.

The hopes and aspirations of Vichuquén’s residents reached their apogee with the visit of thenpresident José Manuel Balmaceda in the fall of 1888.

According to El Buen Consejo, the local newspaper, the head of state made the trip by coach from Curicó with a stop in Licantén, and was received by a double line of lancers whose job was to guard the president during his stay. Based on oral testimonies, it is believed that Balmaceda stayed at local resident José Arangua’s home (now owned by architect Claudio Ferrari), and that in the evening a dance was held in his honor with all the local elite in attendance. It was, without a doubt, a marvelous day: the president wanted to build a military port in the harbor at Llico, in order to gain access to the lake from the coast, and build a railway line that might unite the seashore with the Curicó valley. Almost inevitably, Vichuquén would become an important strategic point. That, at least, was what its residents believed.

Unfortunately Balmaceda died in 1891, and his plans for building a port at Llico died with him.

The central government, upon abandoning this project, suddenly became aware of Vichuquén’s communication and transportation problems. Economic activity slowly began to decline until, finally, the decision was made to move the province’s administrative center elsewhere. On 12 June 1930, two years after the government issued the decree that stripped Vichuquén of its status as district capital, winter arrived and took with it much of the village’s long-held dignity when floods from the surrounding estuaries decimated almost all the constructions in the low part of town. The only houses that survived the calamity were those adobe structures that had been built on the small hillock that rose up on Comercio Street and those ensconced in the foothills of the nearest mountain, where today Arturo Prat and Balmaceda Streets stand. It was these proud patrimonial dwellings that best withstood the passage of time and ravages of nature such as the 1939 and 1985 earthquakes, and this was what led the government, during the presidency of Patricio Aylwin in 1990, to declare Vichuquén historic district, citing the fact that “the town has, to a great degree, maintained its original characteristics, allowing it to present a unified appearance” as well as “the architectural interest of a great number of its dwellings and the originality of its urban layout.”

Until the summer of 2010, Vichuquén was the result of the obstinacy of adobe and the struggle of a small group of people who were determined to preserve the history that may still be discerned in the old corridors on the main avenue. The earthquake of 27 February 2010, however, left that history on the precipice of final, irrevocable extinction. The proximity and power of the earthquake’s tremors shook the town to its very core; it was a test that was far too demanding for the centuries’ old houses of a locality that, even before the catastrophe, had scarcely been able to keep

Como arquitecta de la Corporación Patrimonio Cultural de Chile, me tocó constatar en terreno el severo daño sufrido por las viviendas patrimoniales de Vichuquén, de las cuales el cincuenta por ciento fueron construidas en tierra cruda. Había riesgo de derrumbe, muros agrietados y desaplomados, techumbres en el suelo. El terremoto dejó en evidencia el comportamiento deficiente del adobe, agudizado por la pérdida de una cultura de mantención. Era un escenario de posguerra.

Algunas viviendas incluso alcanzaron a ser marcadas para una eventual demolición. Afortunadamente, la autoridad local y los damnificados comprendieron casi de inmediato la necesidad de establecer un tratamiento especial a las casas del denominado casco antiguo. Un grupo de vecinos, de hecho, se organizó bajo el lema “Salvemos Vichuquén”.

Después del terremoto también había que defender al pueblo del miedo y de las preocupaciones típicas de un largo proceso de reconstrucción nacional.

Además del valioso deseo vichuquenino, surgió una iniciativa pública y privada que contó con la participación del Ministerio de Vivienda y Urbanismo, la Municipalidad de Vichuquén, el Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales, la compañía minera Barrick y la Corporación Patrimonio Cultural de Chile. Esta última entidad se encargó de coordinar y administrar el proyecto de reparación y reconstrucción de veinticuatro viviendas patrimoniales. Ello permitió obtener recursos para proteger en primer lugar lo que el sismo no pudo derribar y para recuperar luego la arquitectura de Vichuquén de la manera en que más pudiera parecerse a su edificación original, rescatando el valor histórico del pueblo e instalando asimismo una forma de vida rural campesina con características de autogestión capaz de proyectarse de manera sustentable.

No era fácil, por supuesto, enfrentar una reconstrucción que pudiera preservar la identidad en un contexto de ausencia de norma oficial del adobe como material estructural. En esa instancia crucial, mientras se gestionaban las modificaciones legales que hicieran posible la aplicación de un subsidio patrimonial, la contribución de Barrick fue significativa y favoreció la puesta en marcha de las tareas más urgentes de la reconstrucción.

De este modo, el pueblo de Vichuquén se transformó en un ejemplo de recuperación que le permitirá a Chile estar mejor preparado para resolver los problemas de la reconstrucción de casas patrimoniales ante la emergencia de una catástrofe natural.

Sin embargo, eso no fue lo único que se logró en este caso, porque lo material también puede ser visto como una manifestación de las convicciones más profundas, y la comunidad participó activamente en varios talleres de capacitación para el mejoramiento de la construcción con adobe, basados en el conoci-

from slipping into oblivion. In the days immediately following the earthquake, many people wondered if the best thing to do was just close their eyes, demolish everything and start from zero.

As an architect at the Chilean Cultural Heritage Corporation, I saw firsthand the severe damage sustained by Vichuquén’s patrimonial homes, of which fifty percent were built directly upon the raw earth.

With buildings that seemed on the verge of collapse; walls that had cracked and shifted; and roofs that had crashed to the ground, the earthquake revealed how very poorly the adobe had held up, and this deficiency was only made more acute by the loss of any kind of culture of maintaining these old and delicate structures. The town resembled a war zone.

Some homes were, in fact, tagged for demolition.

Fortunately, however, the local authorities and the people most directly affected immediately understood the urgent need to establish a special procedure for handling the houses in the old quarter, and a group of local residents gathered together under the aegis of the slogan “Save Vichuquén.” They also saw the importance of keeping the village residents from falling prey to the fear and the worries that inevitably emerge in a long process of nationwide reconstruction.

The tremendous push from the people of Vichuquén was matched by a public/private initiative that included the participation of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the Municipality of Vichuquén, the Council on National Landmarks, the Barrick mining company and the Chilean Cultural Heritage Corporation. It was this last entity that took charge of coordinating and administering the project of repairing and rebuilding twenty-four patrimonial homes. As a result resources were secured for protecting, first and foremost, the structures that had survived the earthquake, and recovering the architecture of Vichuquén in such a way that was sensitive to and reflective of the original structures, upholding the historical value of the village while at the same time proposing a new kind of rural life with a focus on self-sufficiency that might be sustainable over time.

It was far from simple, of course, to undertake a reconstruction capable of preserving the identity of the village in a context in which there was no legal norm establishing adobe as a sanctioned material for construction. At this very crucial instance, while the team worked on making the legal modifications that the village would need in order to apply for a patrimonial subsidy, Barrick made a most significant contribution that helped jump-start of the most urgent tasks of reconstruction.

In this sense, Vichuquén emerged as a paradigm of disaster recovery that hopefully will give Chile a view on how to be better prepared to solve matters of reconstruction of heritage sites in the event of a natural disaster. This, however, was not the only vic-

miento local y la incorporación de nuevas técnicas.

En ese sentido, cabe destacar el aporte de Barrick en la visita de expertos peruanos pertenecientes a Sencico (Servicio Nacional de Capacitación para la Industria de la Construcción), que tiene su sede central en Lima y ha desarrollado nuevos métodos para la edificación de casas antisísmicas en adobe. Como consecuencia de lo anterior, también surgió en Vichuquén una mística del adobe que logró recuperar la confianza de sus habitantes y la antigua dignidad de sus casas, sentimientos que al sumarse tienen que ver con la autoestima de un pueblo.

Este trabajo no es más que la primera parte de la recuperación patrimonial del pueblo. Ahora el desafío es que la comunidad se apropie de él, lo use y se inserte en el día a día para transformarlo en un patrimonio vivo. Este libro es el resultado de aquellos esfuerzos por darle un nuevo porvenir al orgulloso pasado de Vichuquén.

To this end, we must draw special attention to the collaboration of Barrick for organizing the visit of experts from Peru’s National Construction Industry Training Service (Sencico), which is based in Lima and has developed new methods for building earthquake-resistant constructions with adobe. As a result, a mystique around the adobe material began to take hold in Vichuquén, which helped local residents recover their faith as well as their sense of dignity with regard to their homes, and all these sentiments, when added up, are things that do a great deal to raise the self-esteem of a town.

This work, it should be mentioned, is only the first part of the patrimonial reconstruction of the village.

Now the challenge is for the local community to take the project on as its own, to use it and incorporate it on a daily basis, and transform it into a living heritage.

This book is the result of all the efforts aimed at giving Vichuquén and its very glorious past a new future to build and look forward to.

En su casa de la calle Arturo Prat, a las tres y media de la madrugada, el pequeño Gabriel intentaba quedarse dormido. El hijo menor de Eliana Santelices tenía ocho años, y cerca de la medianoche, cuando se levantó para ir al baño, creyó ver a su abuelo del mismo nombre, fallecido un par de años atrás. Según cuentan en la familia, antes de eso sólo se le había aparecido una vez y no había sido, precisamente, portador de buenas noticias, así es que esa noche se fueron a la cama inquietos.

A una cuadra y media, en la calle Comercio, Filomena Correa, por el contrario, dormía tranquilamente a esa misma hora, hasta que un ruido la despertó –quizás un golpe en la puerta de su dormitorio, supuso– y no pudo hacer otra cosa que pensar en un hombre llamado Avelino al que habían sepultado unos días antes.

Filomena, de sesenta y cinco años, se levantó sin cuestionar demasiado el origen de sus preocupaciones.

Vichuquén por las noches no es muy diferente de otros pueblos del sur de Chile, donde las sombras se hacen un lugar entre las creencias, y lo que estaba por venir siempre tendrá más de una explicación posible entre todos aquellos que fueron afectados.

El terremoto del 27 de febrero de 2010 derribó por igual casas y certezas.

It was three-thirty in the morning and little eight year-old Gabriel was trying to fall asleep. In his house on Arturo Prat Street, the youngest son of Eliana Santelices had gotten up to go to the bathroom around midnight, and was certain he’d seen his grandfather Gabriel, who had died a couple of years earlier. As the family story goes, grandfather Gabriel had only “appeared” once before, and it hadn’t been a very good omen. And so that night, everyone went to bed with an uneasy feeling.

A block and a half away at that very same moment, Filomena Correa, in contrast, was sleeping placidly until a noise awakened her—perhaps a knock on the door to her bedroom, she wondered—and she couldn’t help but think of a man named Avelino, whom they had laid to rest a few days earlier. Filomena, sixty-five years old at the time, got up without giving too much thought to the origin of her preoccupations.

Vichuquén at night is not very different from any other village in southern Chile, where shadows have a way of finding their place among people’s beliefs.

What was about to happen will always have more than one possible explanation among those who were affected. The earthquake that struck on 27 February 2010 destroyed both homes and widely held beliefs.

Eliana Santelices, la madre de Gabriel, durante esos tres minutos y medio alcanzó a sentir, con horror, que la vida puede ser como un suspiro. “El niño”, recuerda, “entró al baño y vio a su abuelo. Quedó muy impresionado porque la vez anterior que esto ocurrió mi mamá se empezó a sentir mal al tiro. Clara Olivia Santelices se llama mi mamá. Y ella se enfermó, estuvo muy grave, casi se nos murió, y hubo que llevarla a Santiago.

Esa noche del terremoto nos fuimos a dormir tarde porque estábamos haciendo trama para una vecina que nos la había encargado. La trama es un tipo de lana, pero más rústica. Nosotras trabajamos la lana.

Después nos acostamos todos intranquilos. Gabriel, mi mamá y yo. Dormimos los tres en la misma pieza y cuando empezó el remezón mi mamá me dijo: ‘Eliana, tu papá’. Fue lo primero que pensamos, que mi papá andaba dando vueltas por la casa y que algo malo iba a pasar. Como sea, me levanté muy rápido, saqué a Gabriel de la cama y me lo llevé al patio. Cuando qui-

During those three-and-a-half minutes, Eliana Santelices, Gabriel’s mother, learned what it felt like to realize, in horror, that life can be as fleeting as a breath. “My son went into the bathroom and saw his grandfather,” she recalls. “He was stunned because the last time this happened my mother began to feel ill instantly. Clara Olivia Santelices, that’s my mother’s name. She got sick, so sick she almost died, and we had to bring her to Santiago. The night of the earthquake we went to sleep late because we were working a trama for a neighbor who had ordered it from us. The trama is a kind of wool, but more natural. We work the wool. Afterward, we all felt anxious as we went to bed, Gabriela, my mother and I. The three of us were sleeping in the same room, and when the tremors started my mother said to me, ‘Eliana, your father.’ It was the first thing that occurred to all of us, that my father was wandering around the house and that something bad was going to happen. I don’t know how but I got up as fast as I could, pulled Gabriel out of

I somehow managed to get her out, and I could hear Gabriel out on the patio saying that there was a monster under the earth.”

Un crujido inesperado en medio de la noche los sacó del sueño profundo, diez minutos antes del terremoto. Ella creyó que Avelino Jofré había vuelto para despedirse: “Lo mataron con una botella en Lipimávida. Tenía cincuenta años. Mi esposo dijo que para qué me iba a levantar, pero lo hice y abrí la puerta que da hacia el patio porque tenía candado. Se me ocurrió que si Avelino quería irse, tenía que abrirle la puerta. Me di una vuelta por fuera y vi que había un círculo alrededor de la luna. ‘Aguacero o temblor’, le dije a José cuando me metí de nuevo en la cama. Creo que en el refrán esa señal significa algo distinto, pero en ese momento se me ocurrió eso y los refranes dan para todo. A los cinco minutos empezó el terremoto. Fue terrible. Salí corriendo hacia el patio sin pensar en nada. Como el terreno está en desnivel, las piedras me seguían. Me puse al final del sitio y me arrodillé frente a la noria. La pared de nuestro dormitorio se abrió por la mitad, se caían las tejas por todos lados.

José se reunió conmigo unos segundos después. Se oían gritos por todos lados, la gente lloraba. Las campanas de la iglesia empezaron a sonar desordenadamente. Al poco rato nos fuimos precisamente a la iglesia. La Virgen del Carmen estaba en el suelo con su niñito. Luego aparecieron los primeros autos que venían de la costa por miedo al maremoto”.

Vichuquén, its homes and its inhabitants were shaken by fear, but Filomena Correa and her husband, José Jara, had a bit of good luck. An unexpected creaking noise in the middle of the night coaxed them out of a deep sleep ten minutes before the earthquake. Filomena believed that Avelino Jofré had come back to say goodbye: “They killed him with a bottle in Lipimávida.

He was fifty years old. My husband said, ‘why are you going to get up?’ but I did anyway and unlocked the door that opens onto the patio, because it was padlocked. It occurred to me that if Avelino wanted to leave I would have to open the door for him. I went outside and walked around for a few moments, and I noticed that there was a circle around the moon. ‘Thunderstorm or tremors,’ I said to José as I climbed back into bed. I think that the intention or warning of that saying is actually different, but that was what came into my head just then, and those kinds of sayings serve for lots of situations. Five minutes later the earthquake began. It was terrible. I ran out to the patio without thinking. Since our land is on a slope, the stones followed me down. I went out to the edge of the property and I knelt down in front of the water wheel. The wall enclosing our bedroom split open down the middle, and roof tiles were flying everywhere.

José was at my side a few seconds later. You could hear screams coming from everywhere, people crying. The church bells began to ring out randomly. A few minutes later we went out, precisely, to the church. Our Lady of Carmel was on the ground with her little boy. Then the first cars began to arrive from the coast, with people terrified of a tsunami.”

Matías, el menor de los cuatro hijos de Luis Díaz, apenas se enteró de lo que estaba pasando. Tenía nueve años y no despertó hasta que su padre lo levantó de un tirón en medio del terremoto: “El chico estaba en el altillo. Supongo que muy cansado de tanto jugar el día anterior, porque siguió durmiendo como si nada pasara. Cuando fui a buscarlo se cayó un pedazo de muralla. Yo a duras penas podía mantenerme en pie, y en ese momento, como no lo veía por ningún lado, pensé lo peor. Se lo entregué a Dios. Si no salía era porque algo le había pasado. Son cosas que a uno se le cruzan por la cabeza en un segundo. Cuando lo vi en su cama dormido no supe si enojarme o alegrarme, pero estaba bien y eso me tranquilizó un poco. ‘Matías’, le grité.

Matías, the youngest of Luis Díaz’s four children, barely realized what was happening. The nine-yearold boy didn’t wake up until his father roused him with a yank in the middle of the earthquake. “The boy was in the attic,” recalls Luis. “I guess he had worn himself out playing the day before, because he just lay there sleeping as if nothing at all was amiss. When I went to get him a piece of the wall went crashing to the floor. I could barely keep my balance, and since I couldn’t see anything, in any direction, I assumed the worst. I gave him up to God. If he didn’t come out it was because something had happened to him. Those are just the kinds of things that go through your mind at a moment like that. When I saw him sleeping in his bed I didn’t

We were all so afraid, you never know what can happen in a situation like that, and I also thought about my house, about what was to come. Would we ever sleep another night under that same roof again? At the time there was no way we could have known the answer, the house just kept moving and I told myself that this was it, this was the end of everything.”

El sismo de 8,8 grados en la escala de Richter, con epicentro en el océano Pacífico a diecisiete kilómetros de Cobquecura, golpeó con toda su fuerza a las regiones del Maule y del Bío-Bío. Empezó a las 3.34 de la mañana y duró tres minutos con veinticinco segundos. Luego hubo confusión y creció el temor.

Dieciocho minutos después, a las 3.52, la primera gran réplica de 6,2 grados tuvo su epicentro en Vichuquén. Nuncio Herrera y su mujer, Hilda, también sufrieron en ese momento el peso de la incertidumbre. “La tierra no paraba de moverse. Estábamos todos muy asustados. Salimos a la calle porque ahí era donde nos sentíamos más seguros. No queríamos entrar a las casas por miedo a los derrumbes. A las pocas horas algunos se instalaron afuera con carpas.

Estuvieron varios días así. Esas horas posteriores al terremoto las recordamos como las más difíciles de nuestras vidas”, dice el dueño del restaurante Donde Don Nuncio, que ofrece comida casera en la esquinas de las calles Comercio y 21 de Mayo.

The earthquake measured 8.8 degrees on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, seventeen kilometers from Cobquecura. It struck Chile’s Maule and Bío-Bío regions with all its might, starting at 3.34 in the morning and lasting three minutes and twenty-five seconds. Confusion immediately reigned and fear soon set in. Eighteen minutes later, at 3.52, the first major aftershock hit, measuring 6.2 degrees and with an epicenter in Vichuquén. Nuncio Herrera and his wife Hilda also suffered the weight of the unknown at that moment. “The earth wouldn’t stop moving. We were all very frightened. We went out onto the street because we knew we were safer outside.

We didn’t want to go inside our own houses because we feared the roofs would cave in. After a few hours, some people set up tents outside, and lived like that for several days. Those few hours after the earthquake were the most difficult hours of our lives,” recalls the owner of the restaurant Donde Don Nuncio, which offers home cooking on the corner of Comercio and 21 de Mayo streets.

De pronto, antes de que despuntara el día, pasó un bombero advirtiendo que venía el maremoto. O creen que fue un bombero: alguien dijo que lo era y todos lo creyeron. Según él, había que resguardarse en los cerros.

El pueblo está a más de veinte kilómetros de la costa, detrás de los cerros a los que justamente corrieron algunos vecinos. Eliana Santelices, su hijo y su madre se subieron al primer vehículo que pasó y se fueron con lo puesto a la subida de las Siete Vueltas, en el camino que une a Vichuquén con Licantén. “No sabíamos nada.

Decían que las olas eran de treinta metros y que iban a arrasar con todo. El susto nos hizo dar por ciertos todos los rumores. Fue un alivio cuando amaneció, pero ahí empezó la otra parte. Fuimos a mirar lo que quedó de nuestras casas. Yo al ver la mía entré en pánico y pedí que me la demolieran al tiro”, dice Eliana.

Las viviendas resultaron con daños severos en sus muros estructurales y la tabiquería. Los techos quedaron imposibles. Como Eliana, muchos dieron por hecho que no volverían a vivir dentro de esas antiguas casas de adobe.

Suddenly, before daybreak, a fireman passed through town warning everyone that a tsunami was imminent.

Or at least they think it was a fireman: someone said it was, and everyone believed him. According to the fireman, everyone needed to seek shelter in the hills. The village of Vichuquén is over twenty kilometers from the coast, behind the hills where many residents ran for cover. Eliana Santelices, her son and her mother got into the first car they were able to flag down and went with the clothes on their back to the Siete Vueltas hill, on the road that connects Vichuquén and Licantén.

“We didn’t know anything. They were telling us that the waves were thirty meters high and would take everything with them. The terror we felt was so great that we just assumed every rumor we heard was true. It was a relief when dawn finally broke, but that was when the next phase began. We had to go see what remained of our houses. When I saw mine I panicked, and asked them to demolish it on the spot,” Eliana recalls.

The houses all had severe structural damage to the walls, and the roofing was unsalvageable. Like Eliana, many local residents assumed that they would never again be able to live inside their old adobe houses.

En la casa de Filomena Correa las puertas interiores siempre están abiertas. Desde su cama, situada justo frente a la entrada del dormitorio, ella puede ver las demás habitaciones de la vivienda: el living, el comedor y, al fondo, la pieza de visitas. Son cuatro ambientes simétricos que dan forma a una casa típica de Vichuquén, con su construcción rectangular de fachada continua y corredor exterior e interior.

Filomena vive sola con José Jara, su marido, pero no se intimida por la magnitud de los espacios. Nació en 1944 y desde niña se acostumbró a vivir así en compañía de su abuela Lucila.

El apellido Correa figura entre los más antiguos de la comunidad vichuquenina. La historia ubica a un tal Cayetano Correa (1673-1740) que se estableció en la zona en los primeros años del siglo XVIII y fue dueño de las estancias cercanas de Llico, El Médano y La Montaña, entre otras posesiones que se irían repartiendo entre las sucesivas generaciones. Javier Elisandro Correa Correa, hijo de Elisandro Correa y Lucila Correa, fue uno de los últimos que dispusieron de tierras en Vichuquén. Filomena Correa es su hija, y en el living tiene un mueble con más de veinte fotografías en blanco y negro. Las más antiguas ya bordean los cien años. “Mi papá era dueño de todo el sector de Santa Rosa –una península que se adentra en el lago– y cuando lo vendió todos le dijeron que lo había regalado, que con el tiempo esos terrenos serían mucho más caros. Él dijo que no le importaba porque quería morirse tranquilo sabiendo que de esa manera la gente de Vichuquén tendría trabajo, que habría un progreso muy grande y que el lago sería otra cosa. A los pocos años empezó a llegar gente buscando sitios y eso al final se llenó”, cuenta Filomena.

In Filomena Correa’s house the interior doors are always open. From her bed, which faces the entrance to her bedroom, she can see all the other rooms of the house: the living room, the dining room, and, in the background, the guest bedroom. These four symmetrical rooms make up the typical Vichuquén-style house, with its rectangular shape, continuous façade, and interior and exterior corridors. Filomena lives alone with her husband José Jara, but she doesn’t feel overwhelmed by the expanse of the large spaces she lives in. She was born in 1944, and ever since she was a little girl living with her grandmother Lucila, this is how she’s lived.

The last name Correa is one of the most traditional to be found in the Vichuquén community. According to the history books, Cayetano Correa (1673-1740) arrived in the area in the early eighteenth century and was the owner of farm land near Llico, El Médano and La Montaña, which, among other possessions, would be divided up by successive generations. Javier Elisandro Correa Correa, son of Elisandro Correa and Lucila Correa, was one of the last of his descendants to have land in Vichuquén. Filomena Correa is his daughter and in her living room there is a piece of furniture with more than twenty black-and-white photographs on it, the oldest of which are nearly a hundred years old. “My father owned the entire district of Santa Rosa—a peninsula that extends into the lake—and when he sold it everyone said that he’d given it away, that with time the land would be worth a lot more. He said he didn’t care because he wanted to die peacefully knowing that in this way the people of Vichuquén would have work, progress would come to the region, and the lake would become something quite different. Within a few years people started coming around looking to buy up plots of land, and now this area is full of people,” explains Filomena.

Filomena Correa tenía once hermanos y al momento de repartirse la herencia de su padre eligió la casa de la calle Comercio, frente a la iglesia, porque fue el lugar donde la crió su abuela: “La verdad es que ninguno de mis hermanos la quería. Llegamos a instalarnos con mi esposo en julio de 1998. Nuestros hijos ya estaban grandes, así que nos vinimos solos.

Yo tenía veintidós años cuando me fui a Santiago para trabajar en en el laboratorio Ballerina. Conocí a José, nos casamos y tuvimos dos hijos. Cuando volví, más de treinta años después, la casa estaba muy dañada, casi en el suelo, estaba muy malo el techo, casi todo desarmado. Se llovía entera. Incluso me dijeron que no me viniera porque se iba a caer, pero a mí me gustaba, yo quería volver a vivir aquí, y la fuimos arreglando de a poco. En el laboratorio nos dieron una plata y la ocupamos toda en ir mejorando nuestra casa. Tiramos barro por aquí y por allá, rellenamos el patio, hice el jardín. Costó harto, pero sacamos todo adelante”.

Cuando le tocó enfrentar el terremoto de 2010, sin embargo, la vivienda ya arrastraba un importante deterioro producto del anterior sismo que afectó a la zona central en 1985, con graves daños por humedad debido a que pasó mucho tiempo con el techo en mal estado después del remezón. El desastre del 27 de febrero agregó grietas en muros estructurales, caída múltiple de revestimientos y tejas, descuadre de los tijerales y vaciado parcial de tabiques. La casa resistió el embate de la naturaleza, pero la gran cantidad de escombros resultantes le dio un aspecto desolador. Las tejas de la cubierta exterior cayeron sobre un jardín de camelias que Filomena había cultivado durante más de una década, desde que un amigo de la Quinta Normal se las regaló cuando hizo el retorno definitivo de Santiago a Vichuquén. Las flores quedaron sepultadas.

Filomena had eleven siblings, and when it came to dividing up her father’s inheritance, she chose the house on Comercio Street in front of the church, because it was the house in which she’d grown up with her grandmother: “The truth is that none of my brothers or sisters wanted the house. In July 1988, I moved in with my husband. Our children were already grown up so just the two of us came. I was twenty-two when I’d gone to Santiago to work in the Ballerina laboratory. I met José, we got married and had two children.

When I came back, more than thirty years later, the house was in a terrible state, it had practically fallen to pieces; the roof was a disaster, almost falling apart.

The rain would come pouring in. People told me not to bother coming back because the house was going to cave in, but I liked it, I wanted to come back and live here, and slowly we restored it. At the laboratory we received some money and we used it to make improvements on the house. We put earth here and there, we filled in the patio, I built the garden. It took a lot of hard work but we managed it.”

When the 2010 earthquake struck, however, the house had already been weakened by significant damage from the 1985 earthquake that had savaged Chile’s central region, and suffered from severe humidity problems because the previous catastrophe had left the roof in very poor condition. The disaster of 27 February added cracks to the structural walls, brought down plaster cladding and roof tiles, knocked the roof beams out of alignment and partially brought down the partition walls. The house survived the brutal shocks brought on by nature, but the huge piles of rubble gave it a sad and desolate air. The tiles from the outside porch fell onto the camellia garden that Filomena had been cultivating for more than a decade after a friend from Quinta Normal had given her the flowers as a present when she made her definitive move from Santiago to Vichuquén.

Nueve meses completos encerrada en su casa pasó Filomena después del terremoto. Le dio depresión y no quería salir porque sentía demasiada pena. “No iba a dejar mi casa sola. Pensaba que yo tenía que estar ahí acompañándola. Soy menuda, pero llegué a pesar cuarenta kilos. Apenas comía”, dice. A causa de su estado de salud, la propiedad fue la primera que entró a la etapa de las obras en la reconstrucción patrimonial de Vichuquén, y tres años después del movimiento telúrico se encontraba en perfectas condiciones para ser habitada. Los dueños de casa reinstalaron los muebles que habían ido arrumbando en la pieza de alojados y, sobre todo, empezaron a recuperar espacio para sus recuerdos. La colección de zapatos de bautizo, por ejemplo: nueve pares de calzado infantil con que fueron bendecidos los miembros de su familia, entre los cuales figuran los de la abuela Lucila, los de la propia Filomena y también los de Javiera, su nieta menor, de dos años.

Las camelias reaparecieron tímidamente frente a la fachada, que pasó del carmesí al beige arcilloso de la tierra local. Un cambio superficial que sólo insinúa la gran transformación que la casa sufrió desde la puerta de entrada hacia dentro, con sus maderas nuevas y los tonos pastel que destacan la luminosidad de cada ambiente y que hacen que lo antiguo se vea como recién edificado. La actividad de la vivienda se vuelca naturalmente hacia el corredor interior, de unos veinticinco metros de largo y ocho pilares que permiten magníficas vistas al estero de Vichuquén, a los cerros que separan al pueblo del lago y, por supuesto, a la puesta de sol.

Ahí es donde Filomena y José establecen sus dominios junto al brasero siempre encendido, una tetera tiznada y el mate siempre listo para las visitas, preparado con las yerbas que ella tiene en el patio. Entre flores, plantas medicinales y árboles frutales hay más de cien especies vegetales. “Tengo borraja, toronjil, menta, matico, romero, hortensias, cardenales, camelias, duraznos, limones, de lo que se le ocurra.

Ahora estoy pensando en poner una chacra al final del terreno para sacar tomates, cebollas y verduras.

Estas plantas le dan vida a nuestra casa cuando no vienen los nietos de vacaciones. A ellos les encanta porque es una casa de campo como las de antes, una casa de adobe, bien parada, con una historia importante que contar. Y a mí me gusta que venga gente. El mate los está esperando”, advierte Filomena Correa.

For nine months following the earthquake Filomena did not leave her house. She was deeply depressed and simply didn’t want to go outside because she was just too sad. “I wasn’t going to leave my house alone. I felt I had to be there to care for it. I’m rather small to begin with, but during that time I went down to forty kilograms. I hardly ate,” she says. Because of her health the property was the first on which work was begun in the Vichuquén patrimonial reconstruction project and now, three years after the quake shook the earth beneath her feet, the house is in perfect order and can be lived in again. The owners were finally able to bring out all their furniture, having kept it in storage in the guestroom, and more importantly, they began to reclaim spaces for their memories. The collection of baptism shoes, for example: nine pairs of children’s shoes, one for each member of the family at their baptism, including Filomena’s grandmother Lucila, Filomena’s own shoes and those of Javiera, her youngest granddaughter of two years.

The camellias timidly reappeared by the front wall, which itself was changed from crimson to the clay-colored beige of the local earth. It’s a superficial change that only hints at the structural changes the house underwent from the front door inwards, with its new wooden beams and pastel tones that bring out the luminosity of every room and make an old building seem newly constructed. Daily life in the house naturally gravitates towards the interior corridor, some twenty-five meters long, and eight pillars that allow a magnificent view toward the Vichuquén estuary, toward the hills that separate the village from the lake, and of course, toward the setting sun.

This is where Filomena and José take up residence, next to the brazier that is always burning, the blackened tea pot and the pot of mate with herbs from the garden, always ready to receive visitors. Of the flowers, the medicinal plants and the fruit trees here, there are more than one hundred species of plants. “I have borage, lemon balm, mint, matico, rosemary, hydrangeas, lobelias, camellias, peaches, lemons... everything you can think of. Now I want to plant a vegetable patch at the end of the garden with tomatoes, onions and other vegetables.

These plants give life to the house when our grandchildren aren’t here on holiday. They love it here because it’s like a proper traditional country house, large, made of adobe, and with an important story behind it. I love it when people come to visit. And I always have mate ready and waiting for them,” says Filomena Correa.

En un levantamiento realizado en 1982 por Mauricio Urzúa y Mauro Manetti para la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Chile, la casa de la rampa, situada en la acera oriente de la calle Comercio, es considerada como parte del conjunto de casas “más destacado y característico” de Vichuquén junto a otras viviendas con las que desarrolla el concepto de fachada continua. El nombre por el cual la casa es conocida se debe a su comunicación directa entre el patio y la calle, que se establece a través de una rampa muy inclinada que une ambos extremos con un desnivel de tres metros desde el exterior al interior.

Georgina Cepeda, la actual dueña, llegó a vivir en ella en 1968 con los seis hijos que tenía entonces con Gustavo Díaz, su esposo ya fallecido. Pocos meses después nació Bárbara, la última integrante de la familia. El alumbramiento, como el de muchos en aquella época, se produjo en una de las habitaciones de la casa, especialmente preparada para la ocasión.

Georgina, ya con más de ochenta años, recuerda la importancia crucial de ese momento en que se convirtió, precisamente, en dueña de casa. Antes vivía de allegada donde su suegra. Más que sentirse incómoda, pensaba que merecía un lugar donde pudiera tomar decisiones y educar a sus hijos sin tener que mirarle la cara a nadie: “Gustavo quería que nos quedáramos con su mamá hasta que ella se muriera. De hecho, compró esta casa y la remodeló para arrendarla. No estaba en muy buenas condiciones cuando se la vendieron, estaba muy sucia, tenía desperdicios por todas partes, pero la arregló y la dejó muy bonita.

Cuando supe que mi marido la tenía lista para arrendarla, un día en que él se fue a ver un circo que llegó a Vichuquén, yo agarré todas mis cosas y me las traje en una carretilla. A la noche llegó Gustavo, sorprendido, y le dije que yo nunca más iba a vivir en una casa como dos pies en un zapato. Tuvo que aceptarlo”.

In a 1982 survey by Mauricio Urzúa and Mauro Manetti commissioned by the School of Architecture at the Universidad de Chile, the ramp house on the east side of Comercio Street is considered to be part of an ensemble of the ‘most distinguished and characteristic’ houses in Vichuquén, along with other dwellings that adhere to the concept of the continuous façade.

The house owes its name to its direct link between patio and street: a very steep ramp that joins the interior and the exterior, separated in height by three meters.

It was 1968 when Georgina Cepeda, the current owner, moved in with the six children she had with Gustavo Díaz, her late husband. A few months after Georgina moved in, Bárbara, the last child to join the family, was born. As was common practice at the time, the birth took place inside the house, in a room that had been prepared especially for the occasion. Georgina, who is now over eighty years old, remembers the importance of the moment in which she became the owner of the house. Previously she had been living with her mother-in-law, and more than feeling uncomfortable there, she felt she needed to live somewhere where she could make decisions and educate her children without having to give explanations to anyone: “Gustavo wanted us to live with his mother until she died. He bought the house, actually, to renovate it and rent it out. It was in terrible condition when he bought it; it was dirty and there was rubbish everywhere, but he fixed it up and made it really lovely. When I found out that the house was finished and ready to rent, one day when Gustavo had gone to see a circus that had come to Vichuquén, I grabbed all my things and took them to the house in a cart. That night Gustavo arrived, surprised, and I told him that I’d never again live in a house feeling like two feet squashed into one shoe. He’d had no choice but to accept it.”

Ella misma recibía a los interesados que por las tardes incluso hacían fila para poder hablar, sobre todo la gente del lago. En el verano, durante la década de los ochenta, trabajaba todo el día como telefonista. Por las noches, junto a un brasero, sacaba las cuentas y hacía los números que utilizaría al día siguiente para atender a los clientes.

Cincuenta números para la mañana y cincuenta para la tarde. Ahí, en una pieza que habilitó para los llamados, se enteró de casi todos los secretos del pueblo.

De los encuentros amorosos furtivos, las necesidades domésticas y los sueños de los más jóvenes. Sólo una vez cometió una infidencia, según ella, cuando confundió a una esposa con una amante, “pero la cosa, por suerte, no pasó a mayores”. Pese a que el aparato fue retirado con la llegada del nuevo siglo, los vecinos de Vichuquén todavía hablan del número 384 de la calle Comercio como la casa del teléfono público.

The first public telephone in Vichuquén was located in Georgina Cepeda’s home. She would personally receive the many people who would come in the afternoon and often get in line to use the telephone, mostly people from the lake. During the 1980s, she’d work all day as a telephone operator in the summer. At night, sitting next to a heater, she’d do the accounts and prepare the numbers that she’d use the next day for her customers: fifty in the morning and fifty in the afternoon. In a room she’d set up for people to make their phone calls, she got to know all the secrets of her clientele, from clandestine love affairs and domestic issues to the innermost hopes and dreams of the young people who passed through her doors. She says that only on one occasion did she let some information slip, when she confused the name of someone’s wife with that of his lover, but “thank goodness, nothing much came of it,” she says. Although the telephone was retired at the turn of the new century, the residents of Vichuquén still talk about 384 Comercio Street as the house of the public telephone.

Lo más difícil del terremoto para Georgina Cepeda fue salir de su casa. El ruido atronador de las tejas cayendo frente a la puerta de entrada la paralizó durante un par de segundos, pero alcanzó a refugiarse en el corredor. Desde ahí, bajo la luz de la luna, vio cómo se resquebrajaba aquel lugar donde ella solía mandar. Por fuera no se veían grandes daños, pero la fachada posterior, que ya debía enfrentar el deterioro previo de las maderas, estaba al borde del colapso. También quedaron prácticamente en el suelo los volúmenes de adobe en la parte trasera, que servían como bodega, y no hubo más remedio que proceder a su demolición. La vista era desoladora: largas grietas en diagonal recorrían los muros estructurales, y hacia el interior la vivienda terminaba tristemente en una construcción de madera que había perdido toda su forma. Georgina Cepeda vivió más de tres años en una mediagua de tres por cuatro metros, hasta que a fines de 2013 volvió a instalarse en sus dominios. Estaba como nueva, mejor que antes.

For Georgina the toughest thing about the earthquake was getting out of the house. The thundering noise of the roof tiles falling in front of the entrance door paralyzed her for a few seconds, but she managed to find shelter in the corridor. From there, by moonlight, she watched on as the part of the house she used to work in crumbled to the ground. From the outside there didn’t seem to be much damage, but the back wall, where the wood had already begun to deteriorate, was about to collapse. The adobe sections at the back, which were used as storage rooms, had all but fallen to the ground, and had to be demolished. It was a dismal sight: huge diagonal cracks ran across the structural walls, and on the inside the building ended, sadly, in a wooden construction that had completely lost its shape. For more than three years, Georgina Cepeda lived in a temporary pre-fabricated home that measured three meters by four meters, until finally she was able to move back into her house in late 2013. When she arrived it was as good as new—perhaps even better.

“Quiero aprovechar mis últimos años en este espacio que tanto me costó tener”, dice Georgina Cepeda.

“I want to make the most of the years that I have left in this house that I had to fight to save,” says Georgina Cepeda.

Desde el corredor interior –que también funciona como un balcón, producto del desnivel del terreno que hacia el fondo transforma la primera planta en un segundo piso– se puede ver la antigua cancha de fútbol a la que los niños de la casa salían directamente por el patio. Al fondo están los cerros de Vichuquén, de donde vino la madera utilizada para reconstruir toda la fachada posterior, que se alargó para reubicar el baño de la vivienda, ahora más amplio y con las comodidades necesarias. Hay una escalera nueva, de caída menos vertical, porque fue adaptada a los años de su moradora. Por ahí ella también baja ahora a tomar el aire de la tarde y a cuidar lo que queda de sus árboles: un durazno, un manzano, un peral y el viejo parrón.

Georgina Cepeda dispone de una casa grande para ella sola y le gusta la idea: “Mi casa está abierta para que todos mis hijos vengan en sus vacaciones con sus familias. Si alguien necesita, no tengo problema, pero ellos saben que a mí me gusta mandar. Quiero aprovechar mis últimos años en este espacio que tanto me costó tener. A lo mejor podría dedicarme a cuidar a una persona mayor que lo necesite, para ocuparme en algo”.

Para Georgina, la casa de la rampa sigue siendo la misma que conoció de niña, cuando Blanca Castro y sus hermanas, todas solteronas, se sentaban en una banca bajo la sombra del largo corredor a esperar que pasara un abogado de apellido Brisquett para conversar con él. La fachada ha ido cambiando de colores: ahora luce un tono arcilloso conseguido con la misma tierra de Vichuquén. Georgina está llena de historias sobre los corredores de la calle Comercio, donde siempre quiso vivir.

From the interior corridor—that also functions as a balcony because the uneven plot of land turns the ground floor into a second floor—one can see the old football pitch that the children of the house could access straight from the patio. In the background are the hills of Vichuquén, the source of the wood that was used to the rebuild the back wall, which was extended to include the house’s one bathroom, which is now larger and has all the necessary modern conveniences.

There is a new stairway, less steep than before, that has been adapted to the advanced age of the house’s owner. Nowadays she takes the stairs to enjoy the fresh evening air and to look after what is left of her trees: a peach tree, an apple tree, a pear tree and an old trailing vine.

Georgina Cepeda now has a very large house all to herself, and she likes the idea: “My house is open so that all my children can come during the holidays with their families. If someone needs to come there’s no problem, but they know that I like to be in charge in my own house. I want to make the most of the years that I have left in this house that I had to fight to save.

Maybe I could look after an elderly person in need, just to have something to do.”

For Georgina, the ramp house is still the same house she knew as a girl, when Blanca Castro and her sisters, spinters all, would sit on the bench in the shade of the long corridor, waiting for a lawyer by the name of Brisquett to pass by so they might have a chat. The façade has changed colors: now it’s clay-colored, the same color as the earth around Vichuquén. Georgina is full of stories from Comercio Street, where she’s always wanted to live.

Luis Díaz Oyarzún, nacido en 1899, le compró la casa a comienzos de los años treinta a la familia Iragüen Toledo, de Llico. En ese tiempo de esplendor vichuquenino la vivienda funcionaba como residencial.

Los afuerinos llegaban en busca de alojamiento y los vecinos por un plato de comida. A la hora del almuerzo siempre aparecían el juez de turno, los abogados, los funcionarios públicos y mucha gente de todos los rincones de la provincia que necesitaba hacer sus trámites en el pueblo.

Luis Díaz Calquín, hijo del anterior, recuerda con cierta nostalgia aquella época en que la casa era “el auténtico corazón de Vichuquén, donde se juntaba la crème de la crème”. Él y sus padres se levantaban con las gallinas, como se dice en el campo chileno, y el movimiento no paraba durante todo el día para atender a los visitantes: “Mi papá y mi mamá, que se llamaba Florinda Calquín, se dedicaban a trabajar la casa. Más que un hotel, esto era una residencial, pero desde siempre fue conocida como el hotel de Vichuquén. Aquí estaba la única amasandería y mi papá también era el único peluquero del pueblo. Mi mamá preparaba la comida y atendía a la gente más encopetada. La parte más bonita que yo recuerdo es el comedor principal con todas esas personas importantes, todos muy bien vestidos, impecables, conversando de sus cosas y de los acontecimientos locales. Las noticias pasaban primero por este lugar”.

Luis Díaz Oyarzún, born in 1899, bought the house in the early 1930s from the Iragüen Toledo family, of Llico. In those years, during Vichuquén’s golden age, the house functioned as rooming house, receiving out-oftowners in search of somewhere to spend the night and neighbors who dropped in for a plate of food. In the dining room at lunch hour one would almost invariably find the judge on duty, lawyers, government workers, and people from all over the province who needed to take care of some business in town.

Luis Díaz Calquín, son of the above mentioned Luis, recalls with nostalgia the days when the house was “the heart and soul of Vichuquén, the place where the crème de la crème gathered.” He and his parents would rise in the morning with the hens, as they say in the Chilean countryside, and wouldn’t stop until day’s end, catering to the needs of their visitors. “My father and mother, Florinda Calquín, were totally focused on and dedicated to that house,” recalls Luis. “More than a hotel, it was a kind of residence, though it has always been known as the Vichuquén hotel. The one bakery in town was here, and my father was also the only haircutter in town. My mother prepared the food and took care of the most distinguished of our guests. The most beautiful memory I have is of the main dining room with all those important people, everyone so well dressed, looking absolutely perfect, chatting about themselves and the goings-on in town. Everything that happened in town, all the latest news always came through here first.”

Ubicada en la acera norte de la calle Balmaceda, a los pies del cerro La Virgen, la casa de huéspedes tenía una situación preponderante sobre el resto del pueblo: estaba en una pequeña loma, unos pocos metros más arriba de la calle Comercio, lo que hacía más vistoso el movimiento hacia y desde el interior del inmueble. Por el zaguán, elemento característico de la arquitectura colonial, pasaban día a día los productos que hacían funcionar el negocio. “Había mucha vida, esto siempre se estaba moviendo. Mi padre además tenía hortalizas en el patio y con eso se preparaban las comidas. Teníamos cebollas, tomates, distintos tipos de verduras, y todas las cosas, la harina para hacer el pan, las papas, la carne, se guardaban en las bodegas”, dice Luis hijo, cuyo padre falleció en 1985.

El trajín de la casa empezó a decaer a principios de los ochenta, y con la muerte de Florinda Calquín, en 1987, también se inició una larga disputa legal que terminó, casi diez años después, con la partición de la propiedad entre dos herederos. Una parte le correspondió a su hijo Luis y la otra a Juan Abarca, nieto de su marido por su primer matrimonio.

Located on the northern side of Balmaceda Street, at the foot of the La Virgen hill, the rooming house was perched prominently over the rest of the town. It was situated on a small hill just a few meters above Comercio Street, which made the movements to and from the interior of the building that much more interesting. The entryway, a typical element in colonial Spanish architecture, was the point of entry for all the various goods that arrived, and allowed the hotel operation to run smoothly. “There was so much life here, things were always in motion here. My father also had a garden where he grew vegetables that he used to prepare the food served here. We had onions, tomatoes, all different types of vegetables, and we kept everything—from flour for making bread to potatoes and meat—in the pantries,” recalls the younger Luis, whose father died in 1985. The constant activity in the house began to taper off in the early 1980s, and the death of Florinda Calquín in 1987 signaled the start of a long legal dispute that ended some ten years later when the property was divided between two heirs. One part was awarded to Florinda’s son Luis, and the other part went to Juan Abarca, her husband’s grandson from his first marriage.

Tras el terremoto del 27 de febrero, Juan Abarca durmió siete días en un Toyota Tercel de color verde que le prestó su amigo Carlos Reyes. Luego se cambió a una carpa y, finalmente, a una mediagua. Durante el sismo creyó que la casa iba a derrumbarse encima de su humanidad. Se puso junto a la puerta que da al patio y vio cómo caían las tejas del corredor interior, hasta que ya no pudo ver nada más por la tierra que se levantó de inmediato. “Fue tremendo”, advierte.

Muros con grietas enormes, tabiques desviados y desplazamientos de techumbres daban cuenta de un daño severo. Cuando por fin pudo volver a instalarse en su casa, que a mediados de 2013 fue unas de las primeras entregadas por el proyecto de reconstrucción patrimonial de Vichuquén, sintió “una cosa parecida a la felicidad”.

La casa es su infancia, para él sinónimo de tiempos mejores. “Yo nací en Chillán, pero al poco tiempo me trajeron donde mis abuelos. Prácticamente no viví con mis padres. Éramos nueve hermanos y yo fui el único que se vino para acá con mi abuelo Luis.

Soy hijo de la hija que él tuvo con mi abuela, que se llamaba Elvira Faúndez y falleció cuando yo todavía era chico. Me tocó una etapa muy bonita y trabajé en el hotel apenas tuve edad suficiente para ayudar, más o menos desde los siete años. Primero hice los mandados, como a los diez años me pusieron a hacer pan, y a los trece empecé a cortar el pelo y a atender en el restaurante. Tuve la suerte de criarme viendo y escuchando a todos los empleados públicos del pueblo, al jefe de correos, los carabineros, los profesores. Aquí llegaban todos”, dice Juan Abarca, quien más tarde se estableció con su propia peluquería cuando partió por unos años a Quillota. En Vichuquén, pese a que ha ejercido distintos oficios, también se dedica a cortar el cabello y, aunque no le llegan más de tres o cuatro clientes al mes, mantiene dentro de su hogar un espacio para tales efectos. Cobra mil quinientos pesos por el corte para varones. Como vive solo y es dueño de la parte más grande del antiguo hotel, al momento de la reconstrucción pidió que una de las habitaciones tuviera entrada independiente y quedara separada del resto de la vivienda. Su idea era que la casa volviera a brindar algún tipo de arriendo o alojamiento.

Following the earthquake that struck Chile on 27 February 2010, Juan Abarca slept for seven nights straight in the green Toyota Tercel that his friend Carlos Reyes had lent him. From there he moved on to a tent and, finally, a temporary pre-fabricated house.

During the earthquake, he thought that the house would collapse on top of him. He stood in the frame of the door that opened onto the courtyard and watched as the roof tiles from the interior corridors fell to the ground, until he could no longer make anything out because of the dust and earth that immediately billowed up, filling the air. “It was tremendous,” he remembers.

Structural walls with massive cracks and displaced walls and roofs attested to the severity of the damage.

In mid 2013, when he was finally able to return to his house—one of the first houses delivered by the Vichuquén patrimonial reconstruction project—he says he felt “something close to happiness.”

The house is his childhood, which for him is synonymous with better times. “I was born in Chillán, but very soon afterward I was brought to live with my grandparents. I barely ever lived with my parents. I had eight brothers and sisters, but I was the only one who came to live here with my grandfather Luis. I am the son of the daughter he had with my grandmother, Elvira Fáundez, who died when I was very small. So there was this very lovely period in my life when I worked in the hotel before I was really old enough to be helping out. I was around seven years old at the time.

My first job was running errands, and then when I was about ten they had me making bread, and by thirteen I had started to cut people’s hair and wait tables in the restaurant. I was very lucky because I grew up watching and listening to all the government employees in town—the head of the post office, the policemen, the teachers. Everyone came through here,” says Juan Abarca, who would later on set up his own hair salon when he struck out on his own in Quillota for a few years. In Vichuquén, he has worked at various different kinds of jobs, and also cuts people’s hair. Though he receives no more than three or four clients a month, he maintains a space inside his home for this purpose, charging fifteen hundred pesos for a men’s haircut.

And since he lives alone and is the owner of the largest part of the old hotel, during the reconstruction process he requested an independent entrance to one room, so as to keep it somewhat separate from the rest of the house. It was his idea for the house to once again offer some kind of lodging or rental to visitors.

Luis Díaz Calquín, artesano en madera, nació dentro de la antigua casa, en una de las piezas que ahora forman parte de la propiedad vecina. A los treinta años se fue a Rancagua, se casó, tuvo hijos y decidió volver a Vichuquén para darle vida a lo que quedaba del lugar en que vino al mundo. La catástrofe de 2010 le ayudó a convencerse de que quería recuperar los espacios tal como él los recordaba. De hecho, se había preocupado de mantener la construcción en buenas condiciones y ésta quedó con daños menores a causa del sismo, en comparación con otras viviendas del sector. Eso permitió reservar algunos recursos para detalles y terminaciones, en cuya restauración el dueño participó activamente: “De la casa me gusta la estructura misma, el modelo de tipo colonial que tiene. Yo, desde que me instalé tras la muerte de mis padres, traté de conservarla lo más fiel posible a su estética original. Por lo mismo, no he querido meterle cemento ni ninguna cosa que sea ajena a su estilo.

Mantuve los cielos altos y las maderas a la vista, y le pedí al maestro que me puliera los dinteles. Me preocupé especialmente de dejar los palos a la vista en el comedor donde trabajaba mi madre, para que la casa se luciera como se lucía en su mejor época”.

Las maderas tienen un brillo distinto en el hogar de Luis Díaz. El roble de los antiguos pilares comparte su majestad con vigas y tablas nuevas en vanos de puertas y ventanas. Inicialmente se pensó que las casas debían ser pintadas con los mismos colores que tenían antes del terremoto, pero el conjunto formado por la ex residencial sirvió para experimentar con la tonalidad terrosa de la arcilla vichuquenina en muros y fachadas, lo que resalta aun más el orgulloso desplante del adobe.

Luis Díaz Calquín, a wood carver, was born in the old house, in one of the rooms that now belong to the neighboring property. At age thirty, he moved to Rancagua, got married, had children and then decided to return to Vichuquén to breathe life back into what remained of the place where he came into the world.

The 2010 catastrophe helped convince him that it was time to come back and reclaim the spaces as he remembered them. Over the years, he had taken care to maintain the dwelling in good condition and when the earthquake struck, the structure only suffered incidental damages, which was not the case in other houses in the area. This allowed him to put a certain amount of money into details and finishes, and he participated actively in this process of renovation. “I really like the structure of the house, and its very colonial model. I moved back here after my parents died, and ever since then in the renovation process, I have done my best to be faithful to the original aesthetic, which means that I never dreamed of using cement, or anything that didn’t work with the style of the house.

I kept the ceilings high and the beams exposed, and I asked the carpenter to polish the lintels. I was especially careful to leave the beams exposed in the dining room where my mother worked, so that the house would look just as it did in its best years.”

The woods shine a bit differently in Luis Díaz’s home. The oaks of the old pillars share their aura with new beams and planks in the doors and windows. Initially the plan was to paint the houses just as they had been before the earthquake, but the complex formed by the former rooming house allowed a bit of experimentation with the earthy tonalities of the Vichuquén clay in façades and walls, bringing out the proud insolence of the adobe even more.

Situada en la esquina de las calles Comercio y Arturo Prat, frente a la plaza del pueblo, la Casa Martínez fue el almacén más grande de Vichuquén durante cuatro décadas. Ahí, en sus enormes estanterías, se podía encontrar de todo, desde un refrigerador hasta comida envasada. A veces, especialmente los fines de semana o en la época de verano, también llegaban visitantes del lago para hacer sus compras y usar el teléfono público en la casa de la vecina Georgina Cepeda. Entonces se formaba una larga fila de autos estacionados en la calle principal de Vichuquén.

“Era un almacén antiguo, en un espacio grande, y las paredes las teníamos empapeladas con unos afiches muy bonitos. Era bien surtido. Aquí usted podía comprar una cocina, una bicicleta, un tocadiscos y distintos tipos de abarrotes. Mucha gente que venía de afuera se extrañaba porque teníamos productos que incluso era difícil conseguirlos en Santiago. Mi papá era conocido como Don Manolo”, dice Manuel Martínez Cuadra, el cuarto de los cinco hijos de Manuel Martínez Fernández y Fresia Cuadra.

Martínez Fernández era un ciudadano español nacido en Soto de los Infantes, un caserío asturiano de cien habitantes ubicado cincuenta kilómetros al oeste de Oviedo. Después de hacer su servicio en la marina, viajó a Chile para visitar a unos tíos que tenían propiedades en Santiago y Curicó. En esta última ciudad conoció a Fresia, quien sería su mujer, una joven profesora normalista que en su primer trabajo fue asignada a la escuela de Vichuquén, donde ambos se quedaron a vivir para siempre. “Mi viejo falleció de cáncer a los huesos en el año 2000 y está enterrado en el cementerio del pueblo”, cuenta Manuel hijo. Y añade: “Mis padres siempre estuvieron contentos en este lugar, nunca pensaron en irse. De hecho, poco antes de morirse mi papá habló con mi mamá para que me dijera, por ser el mayor de los hijos hombres, que esta casa nunca se podría vender y que quedara para los nietos, para sus vacaciones. Mi mamá me hizo jurar que yo haría valer el pedido de mi papá”.

Situated on the corner of Comercio and Arturo Prat streets, facing the old village square, the Martínez House was, for four decades, the Vichuquén general store. Anything and everything could be found on its vast shelves, from a refrigerator to canned food. Sometimes, especially on weekends or during the summer, visitors from the lake would come to do their shopping or use the public telephone at the nearby house of Georgina Cepeda. At those times, long lines of parked cars were a common sight on Vichuquén’s main street.

“It was an old grocery shop, a huge space, and we papered the walls over with pretty posters. There was everything. Here you could buy a kitchen stove, a bicycle, a record player and a huge assortment of groceries. Many people who came from further away would be surprised because we had products that were often hard to find in Santiago. My father was known as Don Manolo,” says Manuel Martínez Cuadra, the fourth of the five children of Manuel Martínez Fernández and Fresia Cuadra.

Martínez Fernández was a Spaniard born in Soto de los Infantes, an Asturian village with a hundred inhabitants, located fifty kilometers to the west of Oviedo. After serving in the navy he came to Chile to visit an aunt who had property in Santiago and Curicó.

In Curicó he met Fresia, who would later become his wife. She was a young teacher whose first job assignment was at the school in Vichuquén, where they both then settled to live for the rest of their days. “My father died from bone cancer in 2000 and he’s buried in the village cemetery,” explains their son Manuel. He adds: “My parents were always happy here, they never even considered leaving. In fact, a short time before he died my father told my mother to tell me, since I was the oldest son, that this house should never be sold, that it should stay in the family to be used by the grandchildren as a holiday home. My mother made me swear that I’d obey my father’s wishes.”

Fresia Cuadra, la dueña de casa, tenía ochenta y dos años para el día del terremoto y vivía sola con uno de sus nietos. Esa noche se quedó viendo por televisión el Festival de Viña del Mar hasta que, entre la medianoche y las tres de la madrugada, en un momento que no supo determinar, la venció el sueño. El ruido de la casa que empezaba a romperse la despertó. Escapó como pudo junto a su nieto, mientras los muros crujían y las tejas, a la salida, se venían abajo. Al amanecer, aún entre el miedo y las réplicas, llegó su hijo Manuel, y entonces comenzaron a percatarse de los daños. Lo primero que se les ocurrió fue que la vivienda, adquirida más de cincuenta años antes a la familia Correa, no resistiría mucho tiempo en pie. O no, al menos, como ellos siempre la conocieron.

La casa quedó visiblemente dañada, sobre todo en la emblemática esquina frente a la plaza, que resultó con riesgo de colapso inminente por una grave desviación de su posición vertical y profundas fracturas en los muros. El resto del inmueble también presentaba un importante desgaste propio del desuso y el paso del tiempo. Había daños por humedad, hongos en las paredes y maderas deterioradas. La señora Fresia tuvo que dejar su casa. Se instaló primero en una mediagua y luego se fue a vivir por un tiempo a Curicó.

Fresia Cuadra, the owner of the house, was eighty-two years old the day the earthquake struck, and was living alone with one of her grandchildren. That night she had been watching the Viña del Mar music festival on television until, sometime between midnight and three in the morning, she was overcome by sleep. The noise of the house starting to break apart was what woke her up. She and her grandson escaped as the walls groaned and the roof tiles came crashing down to the ground. At daybreak, amid the fear and the aftershocks, her son Manuel arrived, and they began to take stock of the damage done. The first they saw was that the building, bought more than fifty years earlier from the Correa family, would not stand for much longer. Or at least not how they’d all known it.

The house was visibly damaged, especially in the characteristic corner that faced the square, which meant that it was in danger of imminent collapse because of serious damage to its vertical structure and deep cracks in its walls. The rest of the building also showed significant damage owing to neglect and the passage of time. Moisture had seeped into the structure, and there was fungus on the walls and deteriorated wood everywhere. Fresia had no choice but to leave her house. After moving into a temporary prefabricated house, she went to live in Curicó for a while.

El cruce de Comercio y Arturo Prat es un lugar de encuentro para los habitantes del lugar y punto de referencia obligado para el turista. Ahí, al lado, está la plaza con su glorieta típica, sus añosas palmeras, sus puestos de artesanía, y, al frente, el espacio donde se ubicará el nuevo edificio consistorial. Because of its central importance in the urban landscape of Vichuquén, the Manuel Martínez general store was chosen to be rebuilt by the patrimonial reconstruction project. The intersection of Comercio and Arturo Prat is a meeting place for the local inhabitants, and a reference point for visiting tourists. To one side is the village square with its characteristic gazebo, its aged palm trees, its craft stores, and, in front, the space where the new town hall will be located.

Soon after the earthquake, in more or less the same place on Prat Street where the Coca-Cola ad with the name Martínez House once hung, one could now see a sign placed by local residents declaring their commitment to the past, the present and the future of Vichuquén. “The earthquake didn’t crush me. Don’t you do it,” warned the sign. The corner, still fragile, was only just barely standing thanks to a large four-meter long wooden reinforcement beam underpinning it.

Tras ser impermeabilizadas las techumbres y las zonas más expuestas a la humedad del invierno, se realizó un desarme parcial de toda la esquina más complicada para proceder a su reparación. Los muros y tabiques con mayor desviación fueron estabilizados y reforzados con mallas electrosoldadas para mejorar la resistencia de los materiales ante futuros movimientos telúricos. La familia Martínez Cuadra también participó en la fase final de las reparaciones, especialmente en la reposición de tejas recicladas y en la terminación de cielos y pavimentos.

Once the roof and the areas most exposed to the cold and humidity had been waterproofed, the most precarious corner of the building was partially dismantled in order to start the repair job. The structural and partition walls that had shifted the most were stabilized and reinforced with steel webbing in order to improve the resistance of the material to future seismic shocks. The Martínez Cuadra family took part in the final phase of the reparations, especially in the job of replacing the roof tiles with recycled ones and finishing the ceilings and floors.

La casa es grande, una de las más grandes de Vichuquén, con más de quinientos metros cuadrados de superficie edificada. Aunque tenía la plaza al frente, Manuel Martínez prefería jugar en el patio: “Tengo bonitos recuerdos de esta casa. Era una vida muy tranquila que daban ganas de vivirla. Estos espacios enormes nos permitían tener nuestro propio rincón a cada uno. Una sola habitación de éstas puede ser como una casa en Santiago. Por las tardes, después del colegio, nos íbamos con mi hermano y nuestros amigos de infancia a jugar al patio. Jugábamos con camioncitos de madera que hacíamos nosotros mismos. Les hacíamos las ruedas y los resortes con unos zunchos que venían en los cajones de madera que traía mi papá para el negocio. También nos gustaba mucho jugar al trompo, y hasta hacíamos nuestras propias casitas de adobe con cajas de fósforos, casas pequeñas que, pensábamos, no se iban a derrumbar nunca”.

The house is large, one of the largest in Vichuquén, with more than five hundred square meters of built space. Although it had the square in front, Manuel Martínez always preferred playing in the courtyard: “I have lovely memories of that house. It was a very quiet life that made you want to live in the house. Those enormous open spaces meant that each of us had our own corner. Just one of the rooms is the size of some houses in Santiago. In the afternoons, after school, my brother and I and our friends would play on the patio.

We’d play with wooden toy trucks that we’d made ourselves. We made the wheels and the springs from metal bands that we found on the wooden boxes that my father would have for the shop. We also loved playing with our spinning tops, and we’d make our own little adobe houses with match boxes—little houses that we thought would never fall to the ground.”

Fresia Cuadra se jubiló después de treinta y cinco años de servicio en el colegio de Vichuquén y dice que ya no podría vivir en una vivienda de menor tamaño porque se siente ahogada. Su casa ya está como nueva. Por fuera, el blanco de la fachada reluce como en los mejores tiempos de la Casa Martínez, cuando ella iba a Curicó a comprar helados para sus cinco hijos y desde la ventana veían pasar a los vecinos frente a la plaza.

Fresia Cuadra retired after thirty-five years of service at the Vichuquén public school, and says that she could never live in a smaller house because she’d feel suffocated. Her house is now as good as new. On the outside the white wall shines like in the good old days of the Martínez House, when she used to go to Curicó to buy ice cream for her five children, and from the window of the house she could watch the neighbors walk through the square across the way.

El doctor Demus, un alemán que trabajaba en la posta de Vichuquén, llegó en los primeros meses de 1954 a la casa de Judith Navarro en la calle Comercio, en la esquina que da a la plaza. Ella estaba por dar a luz a Gema, la única mujer entre sus cuatro hijos. “El médico trajo como ayudante a Soledad Galaz, que lo asistió en varios partos hasta que aprendió todo el proceso. Con el tiempo la señora Soledad se convirtió en la partera oficial del pueblo. Así nací yo, en esta casa. En esos años todos nacían de ese modo.

Mucho después las mujeres empezaron a ir al hospital”, relata hoy la profesora Gema Venegas, heredera junto a sus hermanos de una propiedad cuya época de máximo esplendor se remonta a los años en que Vichuquén era cabecera de departamento, a fines del siglo XIX. En el otoño de 1888, la familia Olea recibió ahí al presidente José Manuel Balmaceda. Se cuenta que el mandatario se alojaba en otra vivienda –la que actualmente pertenece al arquitecto Claudio Ferrari y que en su momento llegó a ser conocida como Casa Balmaceda–, pero entre sus múltiples actividades sociales en Vichuquén aceptó una invitación a comer de Manuel José Olea. Gema Venegas repite historias que se han transmitido de boca en boca desde sus antepasados: “Esa comida fue todo un acontecimiento para la aristocracia local. La mesa fue servida por las señoritas de la alta sociedad y se supone que estuvieron los vecinos más importantes. A mi mamá, cuando aún era una niña, le contó todo esto la antigua ama de llaves de los Olea. Eloísa se llamaba y fue la última sobreviviente de esos años. Yo alcancé a conocer la mesa en que comió Balmaceda. Ya estaba vieja y un poco apolillada”.

It was early 1954 when Dr. Demus, a native of Germany who worked at the Vichuquén public hospital, arrived at the home of Judith Navarro on Comercio Street, at the corner that meets the village square. Judith was on the verge of giving birth to Gema, the only daughter of her four children. “The doctor brought Soledad Galaz as his assistant; she had assisted him in a number of births until she finally learned the process. As time went by Soledad became the village’s official midwife.

And that’s how I was born, right in this house. In those years everyone was born that way. It wasn’t until much later that women began going to the hospital,” explains Gema Venegas, a schoolteacher who inherited, along with her brothers, a property that enjoyed a golden age in the years when Vichuquén was the district capital in the late nineteenth century.

In autumn of 1988 the Olea family welcomed thenpresident José Manuel Balmaceda into their home. It is said that the head of state spent the night at another home (which at present belongs to the architect Claudio Ferrari and, in its day, came to be known as Casa Balmaceda), but one of his many social events in Vichuquén included an invitation to dine at the home of Manuel José Olea. Gema Venegas tells the stories, which have been passed down by word of mouth from her ancestors: “That dinner was quite a milestone for the local aristocracy. The table was set and served by the young ladies of Vichuquén’s high society, and one can only assume that the most important local residents were present. When she was just a little girl my mother heard the entire story from the Olea family’s old housekeeper, Eloísa, who was the last remaining survivor of those days. I myself actually saw the table that Balmaceda dined on. It was old and a little pock-marked.”

Judith Navarro no recibió el apellido Olea por cosas que con el tiempo se callan o se olvidan, pero al menos heredó la casa donde construiría su propia historia junto a su marido, Luis Venegas. Él, veinte años mayor que ella, nació en 1904, y con su trabajo logró devolverle al inmueble su importancia en el trazado de la calle principal. Se casaron a fines de la década de los cuarenta. “Mi papá empezó a trabajar como asistente de un abogado, luego fue secretario municipal y finalmente se instaló como oficial del Registro Civil. Tenía su oficina en la misma casa, en la pieza que da a la esquina”, dice Gema, que vivió una infancia marcada por los trámites y los trajines en los corredores de la calle Comercio, los juegos en la plaza y una relación muy cercana con su padre. Era su regalona.

Sergio, Pelayo y Patricio, los tres hijos hombres de Luis y Judith, solían jugar a la pelota o con unas bochas de madera que quedaron en la casa desde los tiempos antiguos. Después, cuando crecieron, se iban a los bancos de la plaza a cantar y a tocar guitarra para enamorar a las vecinas adolescentes. Gema jugaba sola al luche en el corredor, salía a dar vueltas por el pueblo en bicicleta y por las noches se acurrucaba junto a su padre para escuchar el programa que Julio Martínez tenía entonces en la radio Agricultura. La frase con que el famoso periodista abría sus transmisiones la recuerda de memoria: “Amables oyentes, tengan ustedes muy buenas noches”.

El dueño de casa también tenía una vitrola en la que escuchaba marchas militares y una colección de discos que encendió el gusto por la música en sus hijos. A veces, en las fiestas, interpretaba con Gema algunas baladas del cantante argentino Leonardo Favio. Él tocaba el acordeón o la mandolina mientras ella cantaba y hacía sonar la guitarra. Luis Venegas murió en 1986 y lo velaron en su casa.

Judith Navarro was not given the last name Olea for the kind of reasons that are either hushed or forgotten over time. She did, at least, inherit the house where she would build her own family history with her husband, Luis Venegas. Born in 1904, almost twenty years earlier than Judith, Luis succeeded in restoring the building to its former prominence on the grid of the village’s main street. The couple was married in the late 1940s.

“My father started out as a lawyer’s assistant, went on to become municipal secretary and some time later became the Civil Registry officer. He had his office in the house, in the room facing the corner,” recalls Gema, whose childhood was shaped by the paperwork and errands being taken care of in the corridors of Comercio Street; games in the town square; and her very close relationship with her father. She was his favorite child.

Sergio, Pelayo and Patricio, Luis and Judith’s three sons, often played ball or fooled around with some wooden bocce balls that had been lying around the house since before anyone could remember. As they got older they began to hang around the benches in the town square, singing and playing guitar to woo the local teenage girls. Gema, for her part, would play hopscotch by herself in the corridor and ride around town on her bike, and at night she would cuddle up next to her father to listen to Julio Martínez’s show on Radio Agricultura. She can still remember what Martínez always said as he began his broadcast: “Dear listeners, I do hope you are having a lovely night.”

The owner of the house also had a phonograph that he used for listening to military marches and a record collection that inspired a taste for music in his children. Sometimes, at parties, he and Gema would sing ballads by the Argentine singer Leonardo Favio, and he would play accordion or mandolin while she would sing and strum a few notes on the guitar. Luis Venegas died in 1986, and the wake was held in the house.

Gema Venegas estudió en Curicó y obtuvo su título de profesora en Santiago. Su casa, como para tantos otros en el pueblo, se había transformado en un espacio nostálgico en el que los ecos del pasado se confundían con la transitoriedad de las vacaciones. En 2010, para el terremoto, ella estaba de paso en Talca y alcanzó a imaginar que su madre y su hermano Patricio, los últimos sobrevivientes del clan en Vichuquén, iban a desaparecer junto con la casa edificada hace ciento cincuenta años. Patricio pensó lo mismo: “Yo estaba durmiendo. La pared se rompió por la mitad y el ruido era aterrador. No sé cómo salimos vivos con mi mamá porque todo se caía a nuestro paso. Nos pusimos afuera en el corredor y estábamos preparados para lo peor”.

Judith Navarro, con ochenta y cinco años, se afirmó en uno de los pilares, cerca de la esquina, y a un metro suyo cayó una lluvia de tejas. La impresión la hizo ponerse de rodillas. Su hogar arrastraba un daño importante anterior al sismo, producto de la humedad y el poco uso de varias habitaciones, pero estructuralmente resistió sin mayores problemas. La reparación posterior se abocó fundamentalmente a la tabiquería, la techumbre y las terminaciones. Judith, sin embargo, falleció por causas naturales durante el proceso y no pudo reinstalarse en su casa de toda la vida, tras vivir unos meses como allegada donde uno de sus hijos.

Gema Venegas studied in Curicó and received her teaching degree in Santiago. Her house, like so many others in the village, had become a nostalgic space where echoes from the past mingled with the transient nature of vacations. In 2010, when the earthquake hit, she was passing through Talca and envisioned her mother and her brother Patricio, the last survivors of the clan still living in Vichuquén, disappearing along with the house that had been built one hundred and fifty years earlier. The same thought went through Patricio’s head at that moment. “I was sleeping,” he recalled. “The wall split in two and the sound was terrifying. I don’t know how my mother and I made it out alive because everything was falling down around our ears. We went outside to the corridor and prepared ourselves for the worst.”

Judith Navarro, eighty-five years old by this time, clung to one of the pillars close to the corner and watched as a shower of roof tiles came pouring down not one meter from where she was standing. After witnessing this, she fell to her knees. In truth, before the earthquake her home had already fallen into a bit of disrepair; many of the rooms had gone unused for some time, and humidity had seeped into them. Structurally speaking, however, it resisted the tremors relatively well. The reconstruction efforts concentrated primarily on the walls, the roof and the finishes. Judith, sadly, died of natural causes as the reconstruction was underway, and was never able to resume living in the home she’d lived in all her life. She hung on for a few months as a guest in the home of one of her sons.

Como consecuencia de ello, Gema Venegas decidió tomar el lugar de su madre y cumplir así su antiguo sueño de volver a Vichuquén después de jubilarse: “Esta casa tiene muchos significados para mí. Aquí nací y aquí velamos a mi papá. Yo ayudé a vestirlo, pero después me quebré y me hice a un lado cuando lo pusieron dentro del cajón. Yo también fui la ayudante de mi viejo en el Registro Civil; le ordenaba los papeles y estaba siempre atenta a sus trámites. Luego, cuando tuve edad suficiente, lo empecé a reemplazar en las vacaciones. Incluso casé a ocho parejas en esta casa. Me gustaba mucho estar con él y sentarme a su lado cuando él se instalaba en el corredor a leer las informaciones del Diario Oficial. Ahí veíamos pasar la gente hacia la iglesia y a las hermanas Castro, que probablemente fueron las últimas representantes de la aristocracia en Vichuquén junto a Zaida Rojas, a quien vi morir cuando se volcó y se quemó en su auto mientras bajaba por el camino de las Siete Vueltas.

Yo andaba ese día en bicicleta con las hermanas Martínez y vi las llamas arriba, en el cerro. La señorita Zaida tocaba el piano y era parte de ese mundo que con el tiempo se perdió. Poco antes, para mi primera comunión, me había regalado un niñito Jesús. Su auto era un Ford y acá lo conocían como El Pidén. Se estrelló en una curva y ella quedó atrapada entre los fierros. Nunca más pude ponerme el vestido con el que andaba ese día. Vichuquén es todo eso para mí”.

In light of this, Gema Venegas decided to take her mother’s place and fulfill her old dream of returning to Vichuquén upon retirement. “This house is meaningful to me in so many ways,” she says. “I was born here; this is where we held the wake when my father died. I helped dress him, but then I broke down and had to step aside when they put him in the coffin. I also helped my father out at the Civil Registry; I would organize his papers and was always ready to assist him with his paperwork. Then, when I was old enough, I began to fill in for him when he went on vacation.

I actually married eight couples in this very house.

I loved being with him, sitting next to him when he would settle down in the corridor to read the information published in Diario Oficial. Sitting there we would watch as people passed by going to church, or we’d see the Castro sisters who were probably the last remaining members of the Vichuquén aristocracy along with Zaida Rojas, whom I saw die when the car she was in flipped over and burned as she was driving downhill on the Siete Vueltas road. I had been out on my bike that day with the Martínez sisters and I saw the flames up in the hills. Miss Zaida played the piano; she was part of a world that disappeared as the years went by. Shortly before that, for my first communion, she had given me a baby Jesus as a gift. She drove a Ford, here it was known as El Pidén. She crashed rounding a curve and ended up trapped in the destroyed frame of the car. After that I could never bear to wear the dress I wore that day. Vichuquén is all that for me.”

Las viviendas en la Zona Típica de Vichuquén tienen más de un siglo de existencia y todas, de un modo u otro, se han visto enfrentadas al tiempo y sus caprichos, pero la casa que pertenece a la familia Apablaza resume casi a la perfección las vicisitudes históricas que hicieron caer al pueblo en una especie de letargo crepuscular en las últimas décadas: llevaba muchos años sumida en el abandono cuando le cayó encima el terremoto de 2010. El resultado de ese duro proceso de deterioro se tradujo, pocos días después del movimiento sísmico, en una dolorosa decisión administrativa: la casa fue marcada con un símbolo que decretaba la necesidad de una urgente demolición.

El daño previo, por la falta de uso y mantención, minó de manera considerable sus posibilidades de mantenerse en pie cuando le tocó enfrentar la catástrofe.

En la mejor época del inmueble, sus moradores podían pasar directamente desde el corredor exterior a la plaza, en la esquina de Comercio y Arturo Prat, como si aquellos jardines, con su glorieta y la histórica palmera en el centro de todo, fueran un segundo patio de la propiedad. Los niños iban de un lado a otro sin preocuparse de los límites, y los adultos dejaban las puertas abiertas para disfrutar el aire fresco de las mañanas, saludar el paso de los vecinos y esperar tranquilamente que llegara el silencio de la noche. Pero en los últimos cincuenta años la casa siempre estuvo más cerca del olvido y la penumbra, por razones que en realidad están relacionadas con la historia reciente de Vichuquén.

The homes in the historic district of Vichuquén are over a century old and all of them, in one way or another, have found themselves challenged by time and its whims, but the house that belongs to the Apablaza family is an almost perfect embodiment of the difficult historical circumstances that plunged the town into a kind of latter-day stagnation over the past few decades. The Apablaza home had been abandoned for several years when the earthquake of 2010 struck. And so a few days after the earthquake hit, the end result of that terrible process of deterioration led to a painful administrative decision: the house was labeled with a symbol that announced to one and all the urgent need for demolition. Because of the already existing damage, which was caused by a lack of use and general neglect, it would be exceedingly difficult for the house to remain standing when the catastrophe hit.

In the building’s brighter days, its residents could move directly from the exterior corridor to the village square at the corner of Comercio and Arturo Prat streets; it was as if those gardens, with the gazebo and the ancient palm tree in the center of it all, were the second patio of that great old house. The children would move from one space to the other unconcerned about where boundaries began and ended, and the adults would leave their doors open to enjoy the fresh morning air, greet the neighbors passing by, and idly await the stillness of the night. But in the past fifty years, the house had inched ever closer to obscurity and abandonment, for reasons that are in fact far more related to the recent history of Vichuquén.

Tengo entendido que él levantó la casa y le hizo muchos arreglos porque afirmaba que debía verse bonita, ya que ocupa un lugar de privilegio y muy vistoso dentro del pueblo. Antiguamente era mucho más grande. De hecho, llegaba hasta la otra cuadra por el fondo, hasta la calle Manuel Rodríguez. Había unas bodegas que el tiempo se encargó de botar mucho antes del terremoto, seguramente porque no estaban bien hechas o porque nadie se preocupó mucho de repararlas cuando se podía”.

Adrián Apablaza, one of her seven children, fondly remembers the different periods they lived in that house: “This property belonged to a gentleman named Juan Aguilera and his wife, Lucinda Bravo; together they raised my mother from when she was very small.

From what I understand, he built the house and made a number of renovations because he always said that the house had to look pretty since it occupied such a prominent location and was such a visible property in the village. The house used to be much larger—in fact, the land out back extended as far as the next block, Manuel Rodríguez Street. There were a few warehouses there that had fallen into disrepair over time, long before the earthquake, surely because they hadn’t been very well built or because nobody bothered to fix them up when they could have.”

Agrega Adrián: “Yo nací en 1949 y en esos días ya había comenzado a decaer la actividad en el pueblo.

Vivimos aquí hasta que yo tenía unos once años. Esa primera parte de mi infancia, por supuesto, fue muy linda. Teníamos los dos corredores para jugar, el de adentro y el de afuera, salíamos a la plaza cuando queríamos y nuestros padres nos dejaban sin preocuparse de nada. La vida, sin embargo, se hizo más complicada para la familia porque en Vichuquén no había mucho trabajo y éramos nueve en total, así que nos fuimos al campo. Allá podíamos tener lo que en el pueblo se hacía muy difícil de conseguir. Mucho después volvimos, cuando mis papás eran mayores. En ese lapso la casa estuvo sola como veinte años. Yo estaba grande y me vine también para acompañar a mis viejos. Los dos fallecieron aquí. Primero mi mamá y luego mi papá, como veinte años después de ella”.

Adrián adds, “I was born in 1949 and in those days the activity in the town had already begun to slow down.

We lived here until I was about eleven years old. That first part of my childhood, of course, was so lovely. We had the two corridors for us to play, and our parents let us be, they didn’t worry about us. But life got more complicated for the family because there wasn’t much work in Vichuquén and there were nine of us all together, so we moved out to the countryside, where we could have things that, in town, were difficult to come by. Much later on we came back, when my parents were older. During the time we were gone, the house went unoccupied for some twenty years. When I grew up I came back, in part to be near my parents. They both died here. First my mother and then my father, around twenty years after her.”

La muerte de Emilio Apablaza, el patriarca de la familia, sentenció la etapa previa al terremoto. La vivienda quedó deshabitada y empezó una larga disputa por la sucesión, caracterizada fundamentalmente por diferencias de opinión entre los herederos y porque ninguno tenía intenciones claras de instalarse a vivir en ella.

“Cuesta demasiado ponerse de acuerdo entre tantas personas en estos casos”, dice Adrián Apablaza. “Son problemas de familia habituales cuando hay que repartir los bienes de los padres. Dos hermanos incluso fallecieron y hubo que incluir a los sobrinos en toda la parte legal. Al final como que llegamos a la decisión de venderla antes de que se cayera. Fueron como quince años más los que en total la casa estuvo sola. Yo me fui al campo otra vez, como a tres kilómetros de Vichuquén, en el camino a Hualañé, donde me dedico a hacer leña y carbón. Tengo unas hornillas para hacer el carbón con aromo y madera de monte. Me desentendí un poco de esta casa y a esa altura sólo se ocupaba una pieza para vender artesanías en el verano, cuando la gente que venía de vacaciones al lago se daba una vuelta por el pueblo, pero nada más. Mi papá le cambió el techo y la dejó como nueva, pero de a poco se fue destruyendo todo.

La humedad del invierno hizo mucho daño y el terremoto de 2010 encontró la casa muy mal parada. Casi se vino abajo y no había manera de salvarla”.

The death of Emilio Apablaza, the family patriarch, put an end to the period before the earthquake. There was no longer anyone living in the house, and the matter of what was to become of the estate initiated a long dispute, marked by differences in opinion among the heirs, none of whom actually intended to live in the house.

“It is unbelievably hard for so many people to reach an agreement in these kinds of cases,” says Adrián Apablaza. “These kinds of problems are very typical when a family has to divide the parents’ possessions.

Two brothers died while all this was happening, so we had to include some nephews in the legal proceedings.

Finally we more or less reached an agreement to sell it before it fell to pieces. And so the house went unoccupied for almost fifteen more years. I went back to the countryside again, to a place some three kilometers from Vichuquén, on the road to Hualañé; there I make firewood and charcoal. I have some ovens for making charcoal with acacia wood and native woods from the mountains. I kind of avoided getting involved with the house and by that point only one room in the entire place was being used—to sell arts and crafts things in the summer, when the people vacationing at the lake would come by for a walk around town, but that was it. My father replaced the roof and left it like new, but little by little things began to come apart. The humidity in the winter did a lot of damage and the 2010 earthquake hit the house in very bad shape—it almost collapsed, it was practically beyond help.”

El mensaje lo escribieron los mismos vecinos en la fachada, justo en la esquina. Lo pintaron con letras grandes en rojo, negro y azul, para que todos aquellos que transitaran por ahí, especialmente autoridades y turistas, tomaran conciencia de lo que estaba en juego. “Soy Vichuquén, sálvame”, decía la casa, sacando una voz propia desde sus resquebrajados cimientos.

De este modo se instaló en la comunidad vichuquenina una épica de la recuperación patrimonial que luego sería reforzada por el apoyo del gobierno central y el aporte de la empresa privada.

En este caso, la reconstrucción era prácticamente una utopía. La esquina se abrió para dejar a la vista las entrañas de la vivienda y el muro que da a la calle Arturo Prat quedó con peligro de derrumbe inminente. El resto de las paredes resultó con profundas grietas que descuadraron toda la tabiquería interior.

La estructura del techo se hundió y producto de la caída también se perdió gran parte de las tejas. Todos los diagnósticos posteriores al terremoto indicaban el mismo camino: demoler. Pero, después de pensarlo muchas veces, se resolvió darle una nueva oportunidad al inmueble. Lo primero que se hizo, anticipándose incluso a cualquier determinación, fue la reparación de la cubierta para impedir que el techo siguiera lloviéndose en los duros inviernos que estaban por venir. En esas condiciones hasta un par de gotas de agua podía echar abajo la esperanza.

Después se enfrentó el gran desafío de juntar los muros y la solución fue empujarlos con una retroexcavadora para lograr que volvieran a su posición original y finalmente amarrarlos con mallas de metal.

A partir de ese momento todo se hizo más fácil y la casa empezó a recuperar su antiguo orgullo. A fines de 2013 estaba como nueva, quedando solamente algunas terminaciones en cielos y pavimentos a cargo de los propietarios. Ahora son ellos los que deben hacerse responsables del futuro y tienen claro que sería un crimen dejarla nuevamente entregada a su suerte.

“Una casa no puede sobrevivir si alguien no vive dentro de ella”, sostiene Adrián Apablaza.

It was the neighbors themselves who wrote the message on the outside of the house, right on the corner.

They painted the message in big red, black and blue lettering, so that everyone passing by, including tourists and authorities, would understand exactly what was at stake. “I am Vichuquén, save me,” the house called out, finding a voice of its own from its weakened foundations. As the result of this action, the Vichuquén community began to undertake a titanic project of patrimonial recovery that would later be aided by the central government and private enterprise.

In this case, reconstruction was practically a fantasy. The corner had been cracked open, exposing the bowels of the house, and the wall facing Arturo Prat Street was in danger of imminent collapse. The remaining walls had deep fissures that destabilized all the interior structural supports in the house. The roof structure caved in and because of this a large number of tiles were lost. All the subsequent diagnoses following the earthquake suggested the same path: demolition. Yet, after a great deal of consideration, a group decision was made to give the house a second chance.

The first thing, before making any further decisions, was to repair the roof to keep the rain from seeping into the ceilings in the difficult winters that were sure to come. Given the conditions, even a few drops of water could sabotage the entire edifice and everyone’s hopes along with it.

The next great challenge was that of joining the walls, for which the solution was to push them, with a backhoe, into their original position and, finally, tie them together with metal mesh. From that moment on everything became easier and the house began to recover its old glory. By the time 2013 came to a close the place was like new, save some finishing touches on the ceilings and floors, which the owners would have to take care of. Now they are the ones who will have to take responsibility for the future, and they are fully aware that it would be a crime to leave the house to its fate. In the words of Adrián Apablaza, “a house cannot survive if it doesn’t have people living inside it.”

La edificación original, emplazada en la calle Arturo Prat, consideraba como una sola casa las tres propiedades que actualmente pertenecen a María Valenzuela, Romolo Trebbi y la familia Santelices, ya que por herencias o ventas los derechos se fueron repartiendo. Con más de sesenta metros de fachada continua y un largo corredor interior de similar dimensión, competía en tamaño y donaire con las viviendas de la calle Comercio. Ello representa la idea de que Vichuquén alcanzó a insinuar cierta expansión urbana durante su periodo de mayor esplendor, a fines del siglo XIX. Las grandes casas de antaño no sólo surgieron a uno y otro lado de la vía principal, sino que también se construyeron algunas en las arterias transversales que se encaminan hacia la parte alta del pueblo.

The three properties on Arturo Prat Street that presently belong to María Valenzuela, Romolo Trebbi and the Santelices family were once a single, unified house, before inheritance and sales subdivided them.

With a continuous façade extending out over seventy meters, and an interior wall of equal length, the building could certainly compete in both dimensions and graceful presence with any of the homes on Comercio Street. It is a structure that exemplifies the notion that Vichuquén came to suggest a certain kind of urban expansion during its days of greatest splendor in the late nineteenth century. The great homes of yesteryear were erected not only alongside one another on the village’s main street, but on the side roads that make their way toward the high end of the village.

María Valenzuela nació en 1938 y cuenta una historia de esfuerzo muy parecida a la de su madre. “Ernestina Fernández se llamaba mi mamá”, relata, “y yo tenía doce años cuando murió mi papá. Manuel Valenzuela era su nombre y dejó siete hijos. Yo además era la mayor, así que es cosa de imaginar lo difícil que fue para ella, viuda y con siete niños pequeños, sobrevivir a todo eso. Poco después nos instalamos en esta casa y fue una época de mucho sacrificio. Con el tiempo mis hermanos hicieron sus vidas, nos fuimos desparramando como se dice, y yo fui la única que se quedó aquí porque mi mamá me pidió que no la dejara sola. Me casé en Vichuquén, tuve seis hijos y mi marido también falleció. La historia se repitió.

Mi mamá había muerto un poco antes y tuve que salir adelante con su ejemplo. Fueron años difíciles, aunque mis hijos igual pudieron terminar sus estudios.

Trabajé con sueldos mínimos y apenas había para comer, pero después empecé a hacer artesanías con greda y cerámica y a hilar la lana. Fueron ingresos extras que me ayudaron bastante. También crié a una nieta que me entregaron cuando era muy pequeña.

Hace un año ella recibió el título de profesora y para mí es un gran orgullo. Ahora me viene a ver todos los fines de semana. Vivo sola y estoy tranquila porque hice lo que tenía que hacer: ayudé a mi mamá con mis hermanos y luego tuve que seguir el mismo camino que ella. Todo eso ocurrió en esta casa que hoy es mi casa. Para mí es la historia de una vida. Con el terremoto pensé que la iba a perder, pero estoy feliz y muy agradecida de que me la hayan arreglado. Está muy linda”.

María Valenzuela was born in 1938 and her life is a story of perseverance quite similar to that of her mother.

“My mother’s name was Ernestina Fernández,” she says, “and I was twelve years old when my father died.

Manuel Valenzuela was his name, and he had seven children in all. I was the oldest, so you can imagine how difficult it was for my mother, a widow with seven small children, to survive all that. Not long after he died we moved into this house and what followed was a time of great sacrifices for us. As the years went by, my brothers and sisters found their way in life, we ended up scattered here and there, as they say. I was the only one who stayed here, because my mother asked me not to leave her alone. I got married in Vichuquén, had six children and then my husband died, too. History repeated itself. My mother had died shortly before he did, and I had to move forward following the example she had set for me. We went through some very hard times, but all my children were able to finish school.

I worked for minimum wages and barely had enough food on the table but after a time I began doing work in earthenware, ceramics and wool, earning a bit of extra income that really helped me out. I also raised a granddaughter who was placed in my care when she was very small. Just last year she received her teaching degree, which makes me so proud. She comes to see me every weekend. I live alone, but I’m fine because I did what I had to do: I helped my mother with my brothers and sisters, and then I had to follow the same path that she went down. All these things happened here, in this house, which is my house today. For me, it’s the story of an entire life. When the earthquake struck I thought I would lose it, but I am happy and very grateful that they rebuilt it for me. It looks beautiful now.”

A los ocho años, en 1971, Eliana Santelices empezó a dormir todas las noches en el mismo lugar que hasta entonces había sido su sala de clases. La propiedad era de su abuelo, quien la cedió por un tiempo para que funcionara ahí la Escuela Básica de Vichuquén.

Eliana cuenta que cuando el municipio construyó un nuevo colegio le devolvieron la vivienda a la familia y para ella quedó la habitación en que aprendió a leer y escribir: “Me acuerdo muy bien de esos años. Éramos siete hermanos, los cinco mayores estudiaron aquí. Había cuatro salas para los distintos cursos y daban la comida en el corredor. En esa época vivíamos en la parte baja del pueblo y nos cambiamos para acá cuando se recuperó la casa”.

Eliana se casó y se fue se vivir a Punta Arenas, pero luego se separó y regresó para cuidar a sus padres porque sintió que estaban muy solos. Se quedó para siempre en Vichuquén: “Mi papá se llamaba Gabriel, igual que mi hijo menor, y estuvo unos ocho años enfermo antes de morir. Con mi mamá ahora nos ganamos trabajando la lana y yo además me instalé con un minimarket en el que aprovechamos de vender los chalecos, mantas y otras cosas que teje ella. El nombre del negocio es Donde Gabriel y antes lo teníamos en un pasillo. Era un poco incómodo, pero después del terremoto la gente que reconstruyó también nos ayudó a utilizar de mejor forma los espacios. El almacén fue ubicado en mi antiguo dormitorio. Es curioso que hoy me esté ganando la vida en la misma habitación en que fui al colegio unos años y que después fue mi pieza durante tanto tiempo. Hay muchos sueños ahí”.

Starting in 1971, when she was eight years old, Eliana Santelices would go to bed every night in the place that had previously been her classroom. The property had belonged to her grandfather, who gave it up for a time so that it might serve as the Vichuquén primary school. As Eliana tells it, when the municipality finally built a new school, the property was returned to her family, and the bedroom she was given was the very same room where she had learned to read and write: “I remember those years so vividly. We were seven brothers and sisters, and the five oldest went to school here. There were four rooms for the different classes and we ate our meals in the corridor. In those days we lived in the lower part of town, but we moved here when we got the house back.”

Eliana got married and went to live in Punta Arenas, but when she separated from her husband, she came back to take care of her parents, because she felt that they were very alone. And she stayed on in Vichuquén: “My father’s name was Gabriel, just like my youngest son, and was sick for almost eight years before he died. My mother and I now make a living by working with wool, and I also put up a convenience store that we use to sell the sweaters, shawls and other things that she knits. The market is called Donde Gabriel. Before, we had it in a little hallway, which was a little uncomfortable, but after the earthquake the people who helped us to rebuild also helped us take better advantage of our spaces. The convenience store was relocated to where my old bedroom was. It’s funny, now I’m making my livelihood in the same room where I went to school for so many years, and then was my room for so long. There are a lot of dreams there.”

El orden de ubicación en la gran casa de la calle Arturo Prat está repartido de la siguiente forma: hacia el oriente está la propiedad a nombre de Clara Santelices, en el medio la de María Valenzuela, y hacia el poniente, colindante con la antigua Casa Martínez, la del italiano Romolo Trebbi. Las dos primeras resultaron con daños mayores a causa del terremoto de 2010, con tabiques y muros interiores totalmente colapsados. La tercera, en cambio, sólo se vio afectada en sus terminaciones, principalmente de estucos y techumbre. Trebbi, sin embargo, advierte que afortunadamente se encontraban en su casa de Santiago con su mujer cuando se produjo el sismo: “Una enorme viga de madera cayó del techo sobre mi cama”.

The properties in the big house on Arturo Prat Street are distributed in the following manner: the home owned by Clara Santelices is on the eastern side; María Valenzuela’s property is in the middle, and the property on the western edge, next to the old Martínez House, belongs to Romolo Trebbi, who is from Italy.

The 2010 earthquake did more damage to the first two properties, whose interior and structural walls collapsed entirely. Trebbi, however, recalls how very lucky he was that he and his wife were in Santiago when the earthquake hit: “A massive wood beam fell from the ceiling directly onto my bed.”

Romolo Trebbi del Trevigiano nació en 1928 en la región del Véneto, en el norte de Italia. Sus padres querían que se dedicara a la agronomía, pero él prefirió estudiar historia de la arquitectura y con el título de esa especialidad bajo el brazo llegó a Chile en 1954, donde se convertiría en un destacado académico de la Universidad Católica en Santiago. En 1986 se compró una propiedad en Vichuquén para tratar, junto a un grupo de amigos, de rescatar a las casas patrimoniales de su mayor enemigo: el abandono. “Todo empezó cuando vinimos a ver la casa que mi colega Claudio Ferrari, decano de la Facultad de Arquitectura, adquirió en la calle Comercio. Ahí nos dimos cuenta de que estas residencias necesitan que sus dueños estén permanentemente preocupados de mantenerlas vivas. Es la única manera de salvarlas: que alguien viva dentro de ellas. Sólo así es posible recuperarlas.

También instamos a que se vinieran el historiador Raúl Buono-Core y la escritora inglesa Georgina Gubbins. La idea era que, si nosotros nos dedicábamos a mejorar nuestras casas, los demás propietarios del pueblo harían lo mismo con las suyas. De ese modo se le empezó a dar un nuevo aliento a Vichuquén. Las fachadas tomaron color y se reconoció la importancia que tenía la construcción en adobe”, dice Trebbi, quien por su parte aprovechó de agregar algunos detalles que le recordaban su tierra natal, sin que eso afectara el valor histórico de la vivienda.

El terremoto, según Romolo, se constituyó impensadamente en una gran oportunidad para que Vichuquén comenzara a recuperar algunos de sus bríos de antaño: “Hay muchas casas que están quedando como nuevas. Imagino que así eran en sus mejores días. Yo, por ejemplo, calculo que la mía debe haber sido construida alrededor de 1850. Incluso tengo un muro en el patio que estoy tratando de conservar y que claramente es de antes. Parece ser parte de una edificación previa que tal vez se derrumbó o se demolió. El pueblo está recobrando su vieja mística con la reconstrucción patrimonial que aquí se ha hecho.

Vichuquén ha vuelto a la vida”.

Romolo Trebbi del Trevigiano was born in 1928 in the Veneto region in northern Italy. His parents wanted him to study and pursue a career in agronomy, but he preferred to study the history of architecture, and with a degree in his chosen field under his belt, he came in 1954 to Chile, where he became a distinguished professor at the Universidad Católica in Santiago. In 1986 he bought a property in Vichuquén along with a group of friends, in an effort to rescue the village’s historic homes from their greatest enemy: neglect. “It all began when we came to see the house that my colleague, Claudio Ferrari, the dean of the Architecture School, bought on Comercio Street. With him, we realized that these homes need owners who are constantly concerned with their upkeep. It’s the only way to reclaim and restore them. We also urged the historian Raúl Buono-Core and the English writer Georgina Gubbins to come here. The idea was, if we took the time and energy to improve our own houses, other homeowners in the village would do the same with their properties. And so by doing this, some fresh air came to Vichuquén. The façades of the houses started looking nicer and people began to recognize the importance of the adobe constructions,” said Trebbi, who added a few details to his house that reminded him of his home country, though he did so without jeopardizing the dwelling’s historical value.

According to Romolo, the earthquake turned out to be, quite unexpectedly, a huge opportunity for Vichuquén to rediscover some of its old spirit. “There are lots of houses that are starting to look like new again, as I imagine they must have been in their better days. I believe that my house, for example, was probably built around 1850. I even have a wall in the courtyard that I’m trying to preserve, that clearly dates back. It seems to be part of a previous construction that possibly collapsed or was demolished. The town is recapturing an old mystique with the patrimonial reconstruction that’s taken place here. Vichuquén has come back to life.”

Durante el siglo XX, debido a causas telúricas, económicas, políticas y sociales, se iría perfilando un periodo de decadencia para Vichuquén, aquel “caserío muy irregular” descrito por el capitán de corbeta Francisco Vidal Gormás en septiembre de 1872: “Sus casas apiñadas y en desorden apenas diseñan una calle de triste aspecto, no obstante de verse en ella bastante comercio”.

Se trata del mismo pueblo que de la mano de José Manuel Balmaceda alcanzó a tener sueños de grandeza que, sin embargo, se esfumaron con la derrota del presidente en la guerra civil de 1891.

Mucho después, en 1980, un grupo de profesionales motivados por la conservación de un rostro tradicional del pueblo comprarían algunas casas para revalorizar su aspecto patrimonial. Comenzó así una acción de recuperación acentuada por publicaciones, memorias de título y estudios interdisciplinarios que tuvo su cima en la petición, por parte de los arquitectos Edwin Binda, Claudio Ferrari y quien esto firma, para que el casco histórico de Vichuquén fuera declarado Zona Típica, lo que fue concedido en 1990.

Ese proceso, como sabemos, fue interrumpido bruscamente por el sismo del 27 de febrero de 2010. Gracias a un esfuerzo conjunto de recursos públicos y privados, la mayor parte de las viviendas dañadas fue restaurada al punto de recuperar los modelos tradicionales con un nuevo rostro. Tal vez el sismo sirvió para darle un nuevo impulso a un pueblo que lo necesitaba.

During the twentieth century a number of factors—earthly, economic, political, and social—contributed to a period of decline for Vichuquén, that “very irregular hamlet” described by the corvette captain Francisco Vidal Gormás in September 1872. “The crowded, jumbled houses only barely comprise what is a sad-looking street, though quite a bit of commercial activity is evident.” This is the same village that, with José Manuel Balmaceda’s helping hand, began to entertain dreams of grandeur that were nonetheless dashed when the president was defeated during the civil war of 1891.

Much later, in 1980, a group of professionals motivated by the prospect of preserving the more traditional qualities of the village, bought houses here to raise the value of their patrimonial nature. And so began a conservation movement, documented in publications, thesis projects, and interdisciplinary research that reached their apogee when architects Edwin Binda, Claudio Ferrari, and I petitioned for Vichuquén to be declared a historic district, a status it was granted in 1990.

This process, as we all know, was interrupted violently by the earthquake of 27 February 2010. Thanks to a joint effort financed by private and public funds, the majority of the damaged houses were rebuilt in such a way that restored the traditional models and at the same time gave them a new face. Perhaps the earthquake served to give a boost to a village that, for some time, had needed it.
