Channer’s Men’s Clothiers launched in the fall of 1997 and moved to its present free-standing location at the corner of Wonderland and Commissioners in June 1999. In the fall of 2002, Channer’s expanded and opened a womenswear section, doubling in size, and was renamed Channer’s Men’s Ladies Apparel.

Since then, Channer’s has been adding new clothing lines and introducing creative designers from around the world. Recently, the men’s and women’s departments have added premier denim, bringing the latest in top-quality fashion-forward prominent brands. At Channer’s, we have also grown our men’s and women’s shoe departments with exclusive brands found only at our store.

A truly Italian renaissance Pal Zileri’s new direction pairs attitude with aptitude

Pal Zileri, which operates out of the town of Quinto Vicentino, in the heart of Italy’s Veneto region, is eyeing the millennial market.

Rebirth, momentum, avant-garde. These are words Italian menswear company Pal Zileri uses to describe the spirit of its new approach to the modern marketplace.

The label’s renaissance – a relaunch across international markets – came about, following the appointment of a new CEO, Paolo Roviera, last year, and is embodied in its fall/winter 2016 collection, Avant Craft.

According to Roviera, who once worked as an intern for the company, the future of modern menswear is to take a very simple approach to design, all the while innovating to conquer new market share.

“You have to try and think like a consumer to create the right product in terms of value and price,” he told Forbes in an interview earlier this year.

“People will never again go to the excess that we saw last century,” when it comes to spending on suits, the CEO noted.

The No. 1 priority for the new team is to present a product that keeps the heritage of the label alive while incorporating a contemporary look.

“People want functionality – they travel a lot and live a busy life,” said Roviera. “They want to feel pampered but want a garment they feel at ease with, something they can wash and that’s easy to take care of.”

That’s the idea behind Avant Craft, a collection that fuses classic Italian luxury with modern minimalism. Firmly aimed at the millennial menswear market, the ad campaign features British actor Morgan Watkins, who appeared in the spy hit Kingsman: The Secret Service.

The label also has a new website and has relocated its Milan headquarters to a historically industrial area of the city.

“We are changing the product, so we need a different box. This is an interesting area in Milan – there is a lot of pride,” Roviera said.

“Milan is the capital fashion city in the world, so what better way to present rebirth?” •

When tradition meets fashion Gran Sasso has been weaving its way to success since the 1950s

Gran Sasso’s knitwear is lighter than in the past, but just as warm.

Whoever thinks knitwear isn’t sexy clearly hasn’t been up close and personal with Gran Sasso’s range of plush apparel.

Adhering to the motto “Quality is always fashionable” since the 1950s, this Italian familyrun company fuses manual, traditional techniques with innovative clothing production methods – all made exclusively in the old country. The label is the creation of Di Stefano brothers Nello, Eraldo, Alceo and Francesco, who took the brand’s name from the mountain range Gran Sasso, towering over the valley in central Italy where they lived.

Today, the next generation of the Di Stefano family carries on the designs of their forbears, albeit on a much larger scale. The firm operates a 36,000-square-metre plant with 400 employees and a knitting operation that continues the brand’s commitment to quality. According to Gran Sasso, which prides itself on using only the highest grades of wool and cashmere and finishes each garment with intricate detail, the first step to quality is exemplary raw materials.

To that end, it not only uses the finest quality natural yarns and fabrics available, but has its own dyehouse in Milan and uses cotton looms, which produces the fine, delicate weave found in so many of its products.

For fall/winter 2015, the aim is to remain classic, but with a fashionable twist that suits modern life. For example, take the classic down jacket, designed to be even lighter and warmer, and the jersey jackets, double-breasted and padded, with weaves or with a fleece effect that offers comfort and creates a fashionable silhouette. And as always, Gran Sasso’s trademark sweaters come in eye-popping colours, such as maroon, azure dust, mauve and celadon green. •

Tread lightly Weighing in at 290 grams, ZeroGrand is Cole Haan’s lightest shoe ever

When iconic American footwear firm Cole Haan introduced the LunarGrand range in 2012, a dress shoe with a sneaker-inspired sole, it proved that reinvention was possible in a market that’s seen it all.

But the brand didn’t stop there, and two years later, in July 2014, launched its latest creation, ZeroGrand.

A striking brogue, it is Cole Hann’s lightest and most flexible shoe, weighing just 290 grams.

Steve Beccia, senior director of product development, describes the formula for creating a new shoe as 50 per cent function and 50 per cent aesthetic – “an elegant collision of tradition and modernity.”

Beccia says Cole Haan, founded in Chicago in 1928 and solely focused on functional men’s footwear, is a brand for people who work for what they believe in.

“If you look at history of the brogue, it’s functional,” he explains. “Irish potato farmers would punch holes in their shoes, so when they were in bogs, water would drain out [and] the shoes would dry out and could be worn the next day.

“So this function is part of our heritage, our DNA…. We are always aiming to merge fashion and technology and ZeroGrand is a great statement of that.”

At the heart of ZeroGrand is Grand.OS, a thoroughly modern internal operating system that makes improvements in mass and motion, reducing weight and providing responsive underfoot cushioning. Flexibility is a priority with engineered insoles, outsoles, liners and uppers that move with the feet.

According to Cole Haan, the designers achieved the light weight by eliminating unneeded layers, welts and glues from the shoe, and replacing heavy steel shanks, which have traditionally been used for support, with advanced materials that provide equal stability.

Female customers immediately took note and demanded ZeroGrand for themselves. Cole Haan listened, and the shoe was redesigned for women. •

Weekend warriors Luxury outdoor-apparel company Canada Goose is marching to a fresh new look

The name Canada Goose has become as ubiquitous to the Canadian identity as our bone-chilling winters. Walk any street in any snowy month and you’ll likely encounter en masse the company’s signature red, blue or white parkas with fur-trimmed hoodies.

The coats are toasty-warm, so much so that the brand itself touts them to be the “warmest on the planet.” A lofty claim perhaps, but it’s hard to argue when context is provided. Enter…Hutterite down.

Considered the most premium Canadian down available, it is the DNA of the jacket because it retains more warm air than competitors (and knock-offs), which, in turn, equals more insulation. The coyote-fur hoods – an iconic symbol of the company’s style – never freeze or hold water, helping to create a protective windbreak.

Scientists in the Antarctic are devoted to the brand, having worn its Expedition Parkas for the past 30 years, and so do many other extremeweather enthusiasts.

Champion Iditarod sled-dog racer Lance Mackey trekked 1,200 kilometers across the Alaskan wilderness as the brand’s ambassador, as did mountaineer Laurie Skreslet, the first-ever Canadian to summit Mt. Everest in his custom Summit Pink parka.

The “Goose People” have spoken and, simply put, the brand has earned its right to brag.

Practicality aside, Canada Goose is also reaching out to consumers who may prefer exploring their urban neighbourhoods.

The company has designed product lines that marry functionality with an urban-chic aesthetic.

Eschewing familiar, traditional materials, its fall/ winter 2015 collection of new parkas is decidedly more fashion-forward.

It introduces quilted lightweight down with the debut of its exterior-quilted design line, which still features the proprietary “super-lightweight” nylon fabric.

The Macmillan Parka for men is fur-free and features a high collar and adjustable hood, while the Carson Parka is a longer style deemed perfect “for urban exploration or commuting to work.”

For women, the Chelsea Parka is a slightly shorter style offered in an earthy Bordeaux colour, and the Heatherton Parka is hoodless, which is well suited for that girl-about-town look.

Also new is the Canada Goose camo – available in Classic, Whiteout and Whiteout Lite, inspired by the snow leopard and marking the brand’s first foray into print for its adult collections.

In 2013 the company sold a majority stake to U.S. private equity giant Bain Capital in a move that will allow it to push into new territory and on the backs of many more consumers.

The brand is mum on the markets it plans to move to next, but really, once you’ve been to Antarctica, what could possibly stand in your way? •

Green is the new black The Eileen Fisher brand strives for sustainability

Since 2013’s deadly factory collapse in Bangladesh – the worst disaster in the garment industry – the idea of sustainable fashion has never been so pertinent.

But while many labels talk a good eco-fashion strategy, few employ one as vigorously as U.S. women’s clothing brand Eileen Fisher.

Fisher, who started her clothing firm in a Tribeca loft in New York City 30 years ago, says simply, there are no excuses.

The company, through its Vision 2020 campaign, pledges that by 2020, all of its products will be environmentally sustainable.

What exactly does that mean?

Just some of the changes afoot are that the brand will strive to use organic cotton and linen, advocate for fair labour practices and demand nontoxic dyes across the industry.

Fisher told the L.A. Times recently: “I remember in 1997 there was a lot of news around sweatshops and we thought, ‘Oh, my God, we have never really seriously considered the working conditions of the people in those factories.’ I was interested in how other companies were going to respond. I think we all learned from each other about what was going

on and customers were asking, ‘Why don’t you know this?’ ” Fisher believes that as consumers become more aware, the demand for companies to change will come from them.

“We want to get the word out to consumers to demand the creation of different kinds of clothing, following the thread to where the clothes come from and how they’re actually made,” she said.

Eileen Fisher already has an admirable track record. For more than 10 years, it has trained workers in China to voice their rights. Since 2005, it has invested in an alternative supply chain in Peru that pays fair trade wages, and in India, it has launched a six-year investment program designed to empower weavers in rural communities.

In 2009, Fisher started the “Green Eileen” initiative, a recycling program for second-hand Eileen Fisher clothing. To date, customers have sent back more than 300,000 garments to the company headquarters in New York.

It’s what Fisher calls business as a movement.

“That’s my real passion,” she says on her website, “and Green Eileen is one of the things I’m most proud of.” •

Vince keeps it classic and contemporary for fall

Contemporary womenswear label Vince knows about dressing effortlessly without sacrificing style. Launched in 2002, the U.S. cool-girl brand has risen to meteoric heights, thanks to its clever positioning in the market as a luxury-comfort clothing line that promises high quality and construction without a hefty price tag.

Based in New York and Los Angeles and cited as “affordable accessibility,” Vince offers a design aesthetic that aims to embody a certain downtown modern look, using luxe linens, cashmere and leathers as the foundation for wear-everywhere sweaters, tailored trousers and classic T-shirts.

In theory, it may all seem too basic, but once it’s put into practice, you realize it’s anything but.

Just look at the off-duty stylings of supes Kate Moss and Dree Hemingway. Both models have been snapped in the label’s sumptuous knits while appearing, not surprisingly, cool, effortless and unaffected. This is the stuff their “It Girl” status is made of.

For fall 2015, designers are venturing outside of America’s walls and into more international waters.

Using Stockholm’s crisp winter gardens and Paris’s cobblestone streets as inspiration, Vince seeks to stay true to its heritage of classic separates and clean lines while adding fresh new hues (think cerise, emerald and teal) and distinctive details that imbue a sense of bohemian.

Strong outwear options abound, ranging from the minimalist belted car coat in a dusty charcoal to the label’s oversized drape-front coats in the most delicate powder blue, as well as pungent orchid shades.

Nubby mélange knits, signature slouchy sweaters and fitted leather pencil skirts round out the collection, but perhaps most notable is one of their larger design departures – a jumpsuit and vest with an artisanal feel by way of handcrafted knits and patchwork fur.

Beyond womenswear, Vince debuted a 13-piece handbag collection this spring, offering a mix of croc clutches, cross-body bags and chic leather totes.

The colour palette of nude, black, off-white and sky blue stays loyal to the label’s ready-to-wear, while the addition of features like convertible straps, the fold-over pochette (envelope) and notched-V detailing is where the brand’s creativity lies.

Totes, handbags and purses in signature colours of black and off-white have been added to the Vince line.

Chief creative officer Karin Gregersen says the handbag line embodies Vince’s modern aesthetic with an ever-devout emphasis on quality.

“We are so proud to introduce this debut handbag collection,” she says. “We focused on impeccable construction with fine Italian leather, exclusive hardware and understated branding, and it truly leverages our brand DNA, providing timelessly chic handbags that are the perfect match to our ready-to-wear and footwear collections.” •

‘First impressions are really important in providing patients with confidence.’

The best way to deliver a difficult message, says Dr. Akira Sugimoto, is to show respect. For a surgical oncologist – a field that often lets the scalpel do all the talking – respect boils down to face time. In his practice at the London Health Sciences Centre, where he specializes in the treatment of ovarian cancer, there is no shortage of difficult conversations.

“There is spiritual distress for doctors,” he says, “seeing so much distress in our patients.”

Dr. Sugimoto has now focused his own research on the quantifiable effects of spending more time, and higher-quality time, with his patients and their families throughout their treatment journey.

To underscore that need for respect, he also believes that being professionally dressed affects how his words are received.

“First impressions are really important in providing patients with confidence,” he says of his career-long commitment to always being dressed smartly. He is known for his perennial bowtie, a warm gesture of wit and liveliness in an antiseptic environment. “Something I am very conscious of is image. If you are getting onto a plane and the pilot is standing there, wearing a baseball cap, you are going to worry. If you are in a car accident and the ambulance attendant shows up in a tank top, you are going to worry.”

Dr. Sugimoto recently celebrated his 50th birthday but gives the impression of being younger. But it is a far cry, he says, from when he first arrived at London Health Sciences Centre 18 years ago, looking green and ill suited for a position of such gravitas. >>

“When I started here, I was in my early 30s,” he says. “I looked young, and I felt that with the seriousness of the diseases I was treating and the desperation of the patients, they should feel that they can trust their physician.” So, he turned up the polish factor – a sartorial habit he has kept up to this day.

Another message that’s important to him is being part of the community. Dr. Sugimoto, who was born in North Bay, completed his medical degree at the University of Western Ontario.

After specialty training in Toronto, where he met his wife – Dr. Joanne Kirby, an obstetrician and gynecologist – the couple chose to set up shop back in the London area. They are raising their four children, aged 10 to 16, in the community they both serve. The most recent family addition is their Labradoodle puppy, Millie.

Their home is filled with the sounds of a busy family, and the upbeat tempo of Dr. Sugimoto on the piano playing throwbacks from Journey or a kid-pleasing rendition of Katy Perry’s “Firework,” demonstrating that despite the heavy workload he remains light (and young) of heart.

Dr. Sugimoto’s focus is on how doctors can improve the lives of cancer patients and survivors through better communication.

Dr. Kirby, who is an ob/gyn at the Victoria Campus of London Health Sciences Centre as well as an associate professor at University of Western Ontario, loves London: “I don’t think [the kids] would have had all the opportunities if we lived in a bigger, busier city. Getting the children from point A to B when we are both in the operating room or on call can be challenging,” she says, adding they rely on good friends and family.

She is proud of the work she does. “I feel very privileged to have the job that I do.” She’s also very proud of her husband’s work, including his involvement with the Transitional Ovarian Cancer Research Group. “It is wonderful to have [the group] here. Their research offers hope, and this is always important.”

The research group is a multidisciplinary team – comprised of four gynecological oncologists, two PhD researchers in ovarian cancer, a dietitian, a social worker, a pharmacist and a nurse case manager – that provides a comprehensive model for patients and their families.

The team is involved in vital research on several fronts, while Dr. Sugimoto’s focus is on how doctors can improve the lives of cancer patients and survivors through better communication.

“What people want is a chance,” says Dr. Sugimoto. “They want unconditional hope. But it isn’t always about quantity of life; it is also about quality of life. I have logged 100 hours in consultations this year, and my hypothesis is that truth is distressing and requires compassion and tenderness.”

The doctor is active in community awareness efforts and participates in the annual Channer’s gala runway show, speaking on behalf of the beneficiary program, the Translational Ovarian Cancer Research Group. “Peter and Trudy Channer have been generous with our program,” he says, noting the cause is close to their hearts, as Peter has lost a sister and a niece to the disease. Fundraising for cancer causes almost always centres on the quest for a cure.

But Dr. Sugimoto also reports that his research will show that patients’ lives can be improved – and health-care spending reduced – by retraining doctors to focus on fully informing and supporting their patients, especially those with ovarian cancer, a stealth disease where earlystage detection remains a challenge.

‘Truth is distressing and requires compassion and tenderness.’

“If we spend more time with the patients, they live better,” he says. “Sometimes surgical interventions are done out of panic, to feel like we are doing everything we can. We need to take the time to treat everyone like an individual.”

In this grassroots approach to improving patient care, Dr. Sugimoto works closely with the program’s social worker. “I call this ‘low-tech medicine.’ When everyone else is focused on molecules, there is excessive suffering because everyone is focusing on what they hope will pull them out of [the situation], instead of being given the tools to deal with the choices they have right now.”

The program’s community focus is bolstered by the excellent success rate of its “debulking” surgeries. Dr. Sugimoto explains that in ovarian cancer, which has few symptoms in the critical early stages, the tumours form on the surface of the ovary. They can then grow within the peritoneal cavity.

Thus, surgery is less about removing one mass (the traditional view of oncological intervention), but, rather, more about reducing the overall “bulk” of the clumps and lumps of cancer cells in the area and on the surface of adjacent organs.

In the London program, the debulking rate is 90 per cent versus an average of 30 per cent in other programs.

And the more of the tumour that is removed, the logic follows that there should be a better and more positive outcome.

“You don’t need to be in the ‘right’ downtown hospital to get the best care,” says Dr. Sugimoto.

Intimate care offers something intangible but invaluable, he adds. “You need to be a part of a caring community where patients and family can feel empowered and enabled by knowledge.” • fall/winter 2015 31

Musical tastes Two brothers go from tuning instruments to fine-tuning recipes at The Early Bird and Rock au Taco

Justin Wolfe spent his youth touring the world with a heavy metal band and picking up restaurant work on the side. His food passion grew as he worked his way up the food chain from dishwasher to line cook. Circa 2009, he asked his older brother, Gregg, who had been booking bands and managing the Bovine Sex Club on Queen Street West in Toronto, to help him run a bourbon bar back home in London, where the brothers grew up.

That initiative turned into The Early Bird, a haute diner where Justin is chef. “We make 96 per cent of our ingredients in-house,” he says.

“That means bacon that starts out as a pork belly and goes through a 10-day, labour-intensive curing process to become the bacon on your plate. And we go through a lot of it!”

Poutine here is a particular masterpiece (with local curds, available with duck gravy or mushroom sauce). So too is the pulled-pork sandwich, the turducken club (a duck stuffed inside a turkey!), house-cured smoked meat, burgers, perogies, massive salads (all the portions of everything are massive) and, of course, eggs.

A SIDE OF BEATS When a pair of musicians opens a restaurant, the play list is sure to be finetuned. “During the day, you may hear ’60s soul and blues, Motown, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye,” says Justin Wolfe, chef and business partner (with brother Gregg) in the melded diner/taquería concept. “During the evenings, we can get a little louder and play more modern rock/punk/classic/ Southern – Charles Bradley, CCR, Huey Lewis to Gaslight Anthem, Dave Hause, Hot Water Music to Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains. And in the kitchen, we mostly listen to heavy metal like Lamb of God, At The Gates or Carcass.”

Here’s a sampling from their playlist.

The space itself is fun, not least because of the vintage rock posters collected on the brothers’ road tours — “everything from Billy Talent to Slayer,” says Justin.

And because of the addition of Rock au Taco, a take-away or grab-and-sit taco bar, with cerveza and killer margaritas, awaits.

“There is one room, with different areas,” says Justin. “But you can order tacos in the main dining room.”

There are (sometimes long, be warned) lineups to get in most nights, and in summer the fun spills out onto the front sidewalk, where an additional 24 spots bring total seating capacity to about 80.

Justin has continued his work-and-learn autodidact approach to his transition from music to stovetop. He made pals at a concert in Chicago last year with Food Network’s MasterChef Graham Elliot at his two-Michelin-starred eponymous restaurant in that city. That contact flourished into a five-month stint working in Elliot’s kitchen to broaden Justin’s range.

He also travelled with Chef Michael Smith back to Fortune Bridge, the PEI town Smith made famous, to help with the annual steak-and-lobster dinner that he presents as a thank-you to the town.

“I’m now on the road cooking almost as much as I was when I was in a band,” Justin says.

But the simple ingredients – music, tequila, eggs and tacos – at this unique spot have made it a place that is well worth the sidewalk time to be a part of the fun. •

‘We were doing farm-to-table, but nobody called it that yet.’

An innovative chef revamps a 125-year-old dairy building into a hip local restaurant with a European flair

By Leanne Delap In 2007, Chef Paul Harding was picking up some renovation work on an old dairy in London, near his rural hometown of Granton. The George Brown-educated chef had put in his time cooking at Toronto fine-dining training grounds such as Auberge du Pommier and a few hot spots on College Street. The reno gig was a way station: He was heading, as many young Canadian chefs do, off to Australia for further seasoning.

But in the end, he found everything he was looking for was right under his nose: The 1890s building that once housed the oldest dairy in southwestern Ontario inspired Harding to hang up his own shingle here instead.

He rolled up his sleeves and turned the project into an immediate hit with The Only On King (also known as TOOK for short), snagging the No. 6 spot in enRoute magazine’s coveted Top 10 restaurants across the country right out of the gate in 2008.

“We were doing farm-to-table, but nobody called it that yet,” says Harding of his French- and Italian-influenced menu. As consumer appreciation about where food comes from grew, he strengthened his relationships with local vegetable farmers, livestock producers and cheesemakers.

“We buy directly, and cut out the middleman.

Our customers support these producers at local markets as well.”

The menu changes daily and Harding has kept the place small, so he can focus on each diner’s experience. There are three people working in the kitchen and four on the floor each night (except for Sundays and Mondays, when the restaurant is closed), so there is an intimate family feel, enhanced by the simple décor, which makes the most of the space’s historic raw bones.

On your plate, for starters look for house-made charcuterie, gnocchi with pulled duck breast and the creamiest, freshest ricotta imaginable. Mains include a beef shank burger or AAA Ontario tenderloin with garlic scapes, mash and a rich burst of blue cheese. Local pickerel comes with steamed leeks and a soft-boiled egg with citrus wasabi. And a bone-in Ontario pork chop shines with bright pea risotto. Don’t forget a side order of fingerling potatoes roasted in duck fat. •

Stress management Canadians find the Turks and Caicos Islands a comfortable fit

Each winter, the conversation about Turks and Caicos becoming Canada’s 11th province heats up. Alas, our politicians won’t commit, but this British Crown colony comprising 40 islands and cays remains a very appealing holiday destination because it makes Canucks feel at home. Scotiabank, Royal Bank of Canada and CIBC branches dot the streets of Providenciales, the largest island in this archipelago with a population of 30,000. There are no traffic lights, parking meters or indoor shopping malls here, but there are two hospitals accredited by InterHealth Canada.

Two lucky guys, who were once connected to Greenhills Country Club in London, Ont., felt so comfortable on Turks and Caicos that they put down roots there. Dave Douglas, originally from Sarnia, was head pro at Greenhills in the early ’90s. During that time, he wintered in Turks and Caicos and eventually took over, in 1996, the position of director of golf at Provo Golf Club in Providenciales. Sean Wilson, who was raised in London, met Douglas while working in the back shop at Greenhills.

The two kept in touch over the years, and Wilson, who joined the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) in 1999, went to Provo Golf Club as associate pro seven years ago. A lush green course, Provo Golf Club features 11 lakes and a four-star rating from Golf Digest.

“The weather is amazing year-round, the water is an incredible blue, and I really like the casual atmosphere,” says Douglas.

Wilson, who goes back to London every year to see family, agrees. “I always get lots of requests from people who want to visit during the winter,” he says, grinning.

There’s plenty to do in Turks and Caicos for non-golfers, too. Kiteboarding is the newest sport to hit the islands’ turquoise waves. “It takes students two or three days of lessons to become proficient and safe enough to practise on their own,” notes Carolyn Hui, a physician in Edmonton who spends half the year running Turks and Caicos Kiteboarding school with her partner, Wayne Lynagh. Kiteboarders have long

staked out Long Bay Beach on Provindenciales for its almost-endless shallow water and sandy bottom. That stretch of beach is also home to a new luxury resort, The Shore Club (opening next year), developed by expat Maritimer Stan Hartling, who is behind two other high-end properties – The Regent Palms and The Sands at Grace Bay. Not into kiteboarding? Hartling advises visitors to rent a boat and explore. “The uniqueness of having Providenciales with all the amenities right next to a string of very private islands makes for a unforgettable day,” he says. “After nearly 20 years, I still don’t take the beauty of the waters here for granted.”

Beat the

Some age markers bestow gravitas, but too many can tip the balance from distinguished to fogeydom

Maturity may bring wisdom, but it also delivers a calling card or two: a.k.a. forehead furrows and grey hair. Fortunately, remaining youthful doesn’t always require a cosmetic surgeon or Botox. Below are some grooming strategies for maintaining looks without sacrificing dignity.

Skin saver A 2013 Australian study published in the prestigious academic journal Annals of Internal Medicine found that sunscreen significantly slows down skin aging. The key is daily use of a highSPF broad-spectrum (blocking both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen and reapplying every two hours.

According to a survey from the leading U.S. public health institute, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men fail in this regard.

“Less than 15 per cent of men use sunscreen as recommended,” says Toronto dermatologist Dr. Paul Cohen, citing the report.

He suggests making sunscreen a part of grooming.

“Use it as an after-shave: shave your face and cover it with sunscreen,” says Dr. Cohen. “You’re getting sun damage all year, and UVA can be pervasive, not the kind of UV that burns, but the one that ages and can cause skin cancer.”

Grey delay Dyed hair on men conjures unfortunate images: 73-year-old Paul McCartney’s dark blanket or Charlie Sheen’s black ’do paired with his pallor.

But remaining vibrant-looking while grey isn’t easy.

Fortunately, there’s middle ground. Colour camouflage is a salon service – pioneered by Redken for Men Color Camo – blending away 60 to 70 per cent of grey in 30 minutes of salon time.

“Camouflage rinses out after four to six weeks,” says Caleb O’Donovan, head of education at Toronto’s Mankind Grooming Studio for Men, “so it doesn’t leave any colour band, any tell-tale you’ve coloured.”

At-home colour kits are cheaper – Mankind charges $25 for camouflaging – but can be tricky to apply and look unnatural. “With a lot of guys, there’s a stigma around dyeing their hair or beards,” says O’Donovan. “So if you left the office on Friday with a head of grey hair and you come in with black or brown hair on Monday, you might catch a bit of stick over it.”

Brighten up “Long in the tooth” refers to getting older, but it’s often the darkness of teeth that betrays age. Dr. Bruno Paliani, a cosmetic dentist in London, Ont., advises that teeth yellow with aging by absorbing organic compounds in staining foods and drinks.

“When people whiten, they see themselves look younger because that’s what their teeth looked like when they were younger,” says Dr. Paliani.

In-office professional treatments usually involve applying a barrier around gums and then a high concentration of bleaching solution to teeth, activated with a blue light. Dr. Paliani’s offering, Rapid Teeth Whitening, is available in 15-minute to one-hour sessions that may need to be repeated.

Typically more affordable is dentist-supervised take-home whitening, in which custom-made trays and teeth-whitening solution are used for two to eight weeks.

To avoid irritation, he recommends heating up the beard, shaving with the grain and avoiding an extra-close shave.

A league of their own Specialty beers are outpacing the usual suspects, as consumers expand their horizons and develop a more adventurous palate

By David Israelson Remember when a beer was just a beer?

Well, file that stubby in your memory bank and welcome to the world of craft beer. Now, you don’t just drink craft beer, you experience it through a tasting at a nice pub or at a microbrewery. And few places are better for sampling different craft beers than the area stretching from Waterloo and Wellington down to London and into southwestern Ontario.

Beer tasting is a full sensory experience. You don’t pound back the beer; you savour it, absorbing its aroma and applying adjectives like “nutty” or “smoky,” and enjoying its notes, which can be flowery or spicy or, really, just about anything.

It’s easy to visit southwestern Ontario’s craft microbreweries and sample these artisanal brews at a number of specialty brewpubs. Start with the market in St. Jacobs. Already well known for its fabulous farm-fresh food, it’s now also the location of Block Three Brewing Company, started by four buddies who founded their own beer-tasting club when they were university students. >> 42 FALL/WINTER 2015

“We’re a brewer and three accountants,” says Graham Spence, one of the co-owners (and one of the three accountants). He and brewer Bryan Maher and fellow number crunchers Philip Hipkiss and Derek Lebert opened Block Three in 2013.

“We wanted to try something new that had flavour and didn’t taste like everything else,” Spence says. “When we finished school and moved back to Waterloo, there weren’t too many craft brewers. So we got together and went for it.”

Block Three’s signature King Street Saison is a light, crisp Belgian ale, produced from a yeast that delivers notes of cloves and citrus.

The Waterloo area, home to Oktoberfest, has long been hospitable for craft brewing. At one time, the region had nearly 300 independent breweries.

Through the 20th century, they were gradually supplanted by large mechanized brewers, but by the 1980s a micro-renaissance began. Then in 1984, craft brewing was revitalized with the opening of Brick Brewing Company, which now has facilities in both Kitchener and Waterloo.

Microbrewed beers have long crossed the threshold of mainstream acceptability. In southwestern Ontario, there are more than a hundred different beers to sample.

“There are craft brewers in at least 50 communities in the province. [Craft brewing is] growing so fast that we can’t keep up,” says John Hay, president of the Toronto-based trade association Ontario Craft Brewers. “Our objective is to have a craft brewer in every town and city in Ontario.”

They’re getting there. Down in St. Thomas, Paul Corriveau, vice-president of sales and marketing for Railway City Brewing Company, sounds off a long list of upscale pubs and restaurants in the London area that serve the eight-year-old brewery’s signature ales. Railway City brews a copper and amber beer called Iron Spike Blonde and an ale called Dead Elephant, named after the famous circus performer Jumbo, who was killed by a train in St. Thomas in 1885.

It’s easy to organize your own beer-tasting tour of the Waterloo and London areas, notes Hay, and you can now sample hundreds of different beers.

“There are beers for nearly all tastes and palates,” he says. “That’s what happens when you have such a variety.” •

The latest luxury SUVs to hit the road pack power and street cred

Utility. It is, both literally and figuratively, central to the SUV. Yet it’s a concept that seems more applicable to a pocketknife than a vehicle, evoking practicality and purposefulness. But while each of these five vehicles meets the technical definition of an SUV, all offer so much more than simple utility. Think of them, then, as sport utopia vehicles.

Land Rover Discovery Sport SE Powered by a 2.0L turbocharged engine that puts out 240 HP and a top speed of 200 km/h, the newest addition to Land Rover’s Discovery lineup is capable of delivering you to the movies – or the mountains – in both style and comfort.

For on-road driving, the Sport SE’s Adaptive Dynamics system fine-tunes the suspension settings for each wheel to best suit the driving conditions. For off-road driving, the Terrain Response system offers settings for grass, gravel and snow, mud and ruts and sand.

The Sport SE is also designed for comfort and safety, with standard features that include a heated windshield with heated washer jets, rain-sensing windshield wipers, 14-way adjustable driver and passenger front seats and a heated leather steering wheel. It’s the very definition of a hot car.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

Mercedes-Benz Canada describes the GLA as a cross between a stylish coupe and a compact SUV, noting that its dual-hood “power domes,” signature front headlamps and twin-louvre grill are intended to project an aura of “self-assured athleticism.” It’s sort of like the high-school quarterback minus the annoying cockiness.

The GLA comes in two versions: the basic 250, offering 208 HP and 258 pound-feet of torque, and the exponentially more powerful 45 AMG, featuring the most powerful seriesproduction four-cylinder engine in the world.

The 45 AMG’s 2.0L turbocharged engine offers 355 HP and takes you from 0 to 100 km/h in a spritely 4.8 seconds.

Both GLA models feature variable allwheel drive, but you’ll pay approximately $13,000 more for the 45 AMG’s additional horsepower.

The interior of the GLA offers the comfort and high-grade finishes that are de rigueur for a German automaker. Features include a three-spoke steering wheel with 12 function keys and a 7-inch touchscreen display that allows drivers to use installed MercedesBenz apps while moving and, when they’re stationary, to browse the Internet.

It would be shocking if a Google search for “awesome sport luxury crossovers” doesn’t turn up this beauty.

If you’ve ever wanted a vehicle that combines a racetrack-worthy driving experience with the ability to transport a group of kids to soccer practice – Note: this should probably not occur simultaneously – the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is for you.

Porsche’s top-of-the-line SUV features a 4.8L, twin-turbo V8 that produces a socks-removing 570 HP, capable of launching the Cayenne from 0-100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 284 km/h.

This legendary Porsche performance is complemented by premium style and comfort.

The Cayenne Turbo S’s interior features a raceinspired look that includes two-tone leather in black and cream, aluminum trim and a selection of fine woods for that perfect finishing touch.

Both the Sportdesign and 350 F Sport are powered by a 3.5L V6 that produces 270 HP, while the 450h Sportdesign uses a hybrid drive system that generates 295 HP while providing gas mileage – 8L per 100 kilometres in the city/8.5L on the highway – worthy of a compact car.

From the London Knights to the Vancouver Canucks, Bo Horvat talks about what a difference a year makes

When you think of Vancouver Canucks centre Bo Horvat, it’s hard to forget him as the two-time OHL champion with the London Knights who broke out with an impressive 23 points in 21 playoff games in 2013. Some may link him to Devils goaltender Corey Schneider. Shortly before Horvat was drafted, the Canucks shocked the hockey world by dealing Schneider for the Devils’ ninth selection, which ended up being Horvat.

When you weren’t on the ice with the Knights, what did you like to do in and around London?

I think for me it was just hanging out with guys on the team. We’d either go to other billet houses or we’d go to the movies. Just that kind of stuff. Just enjoying your time with your teammates. In junior, it was all team-oriented. We were all around the same age, so to hang out with them was awesome.

Did you ever think about what you might do if hockey didn’t work out for you?

Honestly, no. Ever since Day 1, I wanted to be in the NHL. I wanted to be a professional hockey player. I took it one step at a time. I wanted to make the OHL and I did that. My dream to play in the NHL came true when I got to do it this year. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

What about some of the local establishments?

I turned 19 just last year, so I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to go to those types of places, but when I have, it would be either The Ceeps, Barney’s, Jack’s or places like that.

What was going through your mind when you were waiting to get drafted and a big trade changed your fate?

You really don’t know what to expect. When the Canucks made that move, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. For Vancouver to trade up and pick me, that high was pretty special.

How young were you when you started playing hockey?

I started skating when I was 18 months old. I started playing competitively when I was four. All the way, my dad got me into it. He played junior, so he’s a big influence in my life.

What do you do when you aren’t playing hockey?

Golf. I’ve been trying to get onto the course as often as I can. It’s a bit of a stereotype – I still suck, but I’m getting better at it every day. •
