Lakehouse Cottage Addition

PROJECT: Cottage Addition

ROLE: Architectural Designer (Individual)

An existing cottage nestled against a hillside overlooking a lake in Oconomowoc needed an addition. The task was to create an addition to the family’s cottage which has been passed down from generation to generation. The addition consisted of a entry vestibule and three season room. Using the footprint of the cottage’s screened porch because of shoreline set back restrictions the goal was to create a space to be enjoyed throughout the year.

Construction Drawings

Details reveal the unique structure that this existing cottage has grown from. The primary structure is a WWII quonset hut that is now reclaimed as a cottage. From its initial construction the family slowly expanded the cottage to their needs. For the three season room it was important to make the ceiling match the existing barrel vault of the adjacent room.

A local restaurant desired to expand their space to an underused garage and driveway located on the property. The task was to convert the existing garage to be a flexible bar area and accommodate washrooms for the new bar and patio.

Residential Housing Renovation

An assisted living residential building built in the 2000s began to require improvements. The task required updating existing construction drawings and creating renovation plans. Along with the drawings the building needed elevators to be added for better flow through the building that were not present in the original plan.

The overall floor plan shows placement of elevators as well as each unit type. Every window needed to be updated so on the elevation details were necessary to reveal how the existing structure would meet with the new window type.

Catalano Square is an urban park in downtown Milwaukee’s famous Third Ward District. In collaboration with the city, Herbert Dreiseitl, a highly accomplished landscape architect and urban planner has designed a water feature to revamp the rather neglected site. The task was to provide site analysis as well as 3D scan a 1:1 study model of Herbert’s fountain in Überlingen, Germany.

3D Scanning

As a team of three the challenge was to document the 1:1 study model before Herbert needed to disassemble it because of lease. Using a drone we 3D scanned the whole model within two days and produced a digital replica of Herbert’s work. This allowed for the study model to become the source for dimensions needed for cutting stone.
