6 Waterkolours:

The Essence of Our Creative Soul

Waterkolours Fine Art Gallery, located in Memphis, Tennessee, was founded by Danny and Alison Jenkins. As a self-proclaimed art enthusiast, (Danny) Jenkins has been providing the opportunity for others to experience the soul of art for over 30 years. Jenkins developed a keen understanding of an individual’s desire to see reflections of one’s history and self in art. That grassroots insight spurred him toward developing a close relationship with Black artist, as many were often not included in collections, galleries and museums. This void further prompted Jenkins to commit himself to becoming a scholar of Black art and its artist. Through his collaborative efforts, he forged relationships with individuals and institutions that helped to ensure this body of art would be lifted and continuously shared. As a profound monument to his commitment to the arts, Jenkins sought to create a gallery that would responsibly share collections for educational view and personal acquisition. Through such an approach, Waterkolours is now recognized as one of the most prestigious art galleries in the South.

PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE

GUEST EDITOR’S MESSAGE

Black Galleries are the Beating Heart of our Communities.

Lighting the Way!

No matter if they’re in a converted home, a storefront, a strip mall, downtown, across the tracks, in a specially built ‘cathedral to art’, or virtual, Black galleries provide us spaces to purchase art certainly, but also places to gather, learn and experience Black history in real time. Pigment International® engaged with the IG campaign about Black owned galleries during Art Miami in December. As it spread from page to page we knew that this info needed to be concretized, because it was about more than a post, it was about community. Pigment International PATRICIA ANDREWS-KEENAN is about highlighting the Black art ecosystem so we also thought about ancillary groups, organizations, festivals, and services that make the ecosystem work, leading us to the Black Gallery Guide +. In this full service resource we’ve also captured HBCU art programs, Black run national and international art fairs, and service providers from framers to transport services.

Welcome to the Black Gallery Guide + first edition. I had little idea when my dear friend, Pat Keenan invited me to be a part of the Pigment International crew, as guest editor for the Black Gallery Guide + what an inspiring ride I was in for. While working on the guide, it became obvious that the Black art ecosystem is strong and vibrant y’all.

MICHAEL WOODS

Just like postman Victor Green’s The Negro Motorist Green Book safely lit the way for African Americans traveling south during the decades of Jim Crow laws and segregation, the Black Gallery Guide + collects and shares an unbelievable multi-generational network of Black artists, gallerists, art collectors, curators, festivals, and ancillary resources across the globe. From Waterkolours Fine Art Gallery in Memphis TN to 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech Morocco, this is how we light the way!

Certainly, this info will have an on-line home, but as is our style we want to also have an annual print piece with the same style as our award winning Pigment International Magazine. We encourage you to send updates and additions. Know that this is a work in progress (WIP) and only as good as the info you provide. Thanks to our editors Michael Woods and Nalani McClendon for taking this on. Enjoy this inaugural issue and get copies by visiting our Shopify store, ‘weloveart2022’, or share your info for inclusion in the digital version. Also, follow our Black Gallery Guide page on IG and our website blackgalleryguide.com coming soon.

But here’s the rub and we all know it, up until now there hasn’t been a clear way to connect all this beautiful “Art Blackness” together, to call on, to learn from, to connect with, to share, to build partnerships, and support each other.

It has been my honor to be a part of this discovery. Join us! NALANI MCCLENDON

Pigment’s multimedia platform is about elevating Black art through storytelling and Black gallerists have stories to tell. Like that of Danny Jenkins, owner of Waterkolours Fine Art in Memphis, who believes that Black art marks our place and time in history, and we couldn’t agree more.

THE INSTITUTE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC AND ARTS (IPAMA) is the educational and cultural initiative envisioned by Bishop Sedgwick Daniels. This initiative is designed to preserve the rich tradition of African American contributions in the performing and visual arts. Its goal is to integrate the arts into academic achievement and performance utilizing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. IPAMA promotes awareness of the Black artistic journey through its collection of archival exhibits and historical media that depict the AfricanAmerican artistic sojourn. 6

Through generous donations and purchases, IPAMA actively collects archival materials, books, photographs, clothing/ textiles, audio visual materials, fine art, and historic objects. IPAMA’s overall collection includes institutional history, educational objects and materials that are used in IPAMA programming. Initially opened at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Frank Lloyd Wright property, IPAMA has expanded to a second location which houses displays and artifacts, many of which are one-of-a-kind. IPAMA’s signature artwork was created by award-winning sculptor Aaron Paskins, whose work

was exhibited at the 2021 Spectrum Miami. It is a salute to the power of perseverance of the African American tradition. IPAMA’s collection also includes many works by artists and musicians with connections to Milwaukee including Charly Palmer and David Anderson. Additionally, the Mother Kathryn Daniels Conference Center has provided community empowerment and family reunification initiatives since its inception in 2004. The center offers wraparound services encompassing educational, financial, societal, and ecumenical programs that enhance the quality of life for thousands of Wisconsin residents Sculpture by Aaron Paskins

THE GRIOTS’ GALLERY – A NEW KIND OF GRIOT The Griots’ Gallery and Academy founded by Dr. Michael Butler is located in the Little Haiti section of Miami. The Gallery has a core collection of more than 700 works of art by more than 200 artists. It showcases the breadth and depth of Black Diaspora artistic production across media, styles, geographic distribution and eras.

Art of Black Miami is a marketing platform and destination driver organized by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau that showcases the diversity of the visual arts locally, nationally and internationally, celebrating the Black diaspora. This initiative highlights the artistic landscape found in heritage neighborhoods and communities year-round throughout Greater Miami & Miami Beach. The Griots’ collection allows us to recontextualize the past in ways that assist us in moving forward. It offers its community ways of seeing and experiencing art that more closely resonates with their lived experiences, rather than the view of art promulgated by the commonly expressed Western canon. The Gallery and Academy provides a differing curatorial perspective from

the mainstream arts community, recapturing the humanity of those who are often discarded, forgotten and marginalized. The Griots’ addresses the specific deficits related to the underrepresentation of Black Diaspora artists and heralds their accomplishments that heretofore have gone unnoticed and unacknowledged. It serves as an agent of change and development for the community, offering an intimate setting where residents can feel welcome, comfortable, and engaged with art. The Griots’ provides opportunities for experimentation, reimagining identities, and activating liberation. The Griots’ mission is to review history, placing those of African descent within that history, while envisioning a future of infinite possibilities. 11 11

For Waterkolours Gallery More than Selling Art, it’s about Preserving Culture. “I believe in what we’re doing,’ says Danny Jenkins, owner of Memphis’ Waterkolours Fine Art Gallery. Jenkins sees his role as being much more than an art dealer, rather, he says, he is in the business of presenting images that reflect our capacity for greatness. Civilizations are charted through their art and culture, messages the gallerist says he absorbed upon his conversion to Islam. “Hundreds of years from now, it will be our art and artifacts that tell our story, marking this time and place in our history.” Jenkins began that journey more than 25 years ago selling art prints in hair salons in the city. The owners would alert him when their well-heeled clients had appointments, and he would show up with the prints he purchased. From there he learned framing, and later rented a room in one of the salons to serve as his gallery, while still continuing to make the rounds. Eventually he rented space for his first gallery. Waterkolours is a family affair that includes Jenkin’s wife, Allison, three daughters, and his brother, Tony “Catfish” Jenkins, who he says was beside him from the beginning. Jenkins roster of artists are a who’s who including Woodrow Nash, Charly Palmer, Selma Glass, Rosa Gallardo, William Tolliver, Terry & Jerry Lynn aka Twins, Leroy Campbell, Heather Moss, and Phyllis Stephens. He offers that he has so much respect for the artists he represents and is humbled that they entrust their work to him. He muses, “What if we could apply those same feelings of trust and connectedness within our community?” Waterkolours has built what could only be called a ‘cathedral’ of Black art, in keeping with the gallerist’s vision of Black history and culture. Despite not being able to secure a bank loan, he purchased the 5K square foot space in August 2021, and completed the renovation in December of that year to include state-of-the-art tech. The gallery and event space opens to the public this spring, and for now hosts client viewings and private events. “I am placing a marker that will allow these Black artists to be celebrated 100 years from now,” he concludes.

HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES DIGITAL ART PROJECT (H-DAP) American art history has historically omitted and marginalized the contributions of African American art. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) were some of the first institutions to serve as repositories for African American Art, and they were also the first patrons of African American artists. Artwork by African American artists reflect a long history of African American art woven into the larger context of American art history. HBCU museums, galleries and archives have been, and continue to be stewards of these exceptional works of art.

To correct these American art history omissions, H-DAP will provide nationwide access to a digital repository of select works from HBCU art collections, thus providing education and cultural awareness about African American art. As a result, partially developed and marginalized American art history will be made whole. All 107 HBCU art collections are included in this initiative. Below is a list of HBCUs currently engaged in H-DAP.

SEPTEMBER GRAY FINE ART GALLERY (SGAG) is the nation’s premier gallery specializing in contemporary works by established, mid-career and emerging African American and African diasporic artists. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, SGAG presents historically and culturally significant works as a means for championing the preservation of the African diasporic cultural legacy and narrative. In addition, SGAG offers a comprehensive range of complementary fine art, curatorial and consulting services to private and corporate clients and is conversant in the discreet assessment, acquisition and placement of fine art within its exclusive network of collectors.

MAHOGANY GALLERY OCCUPIES A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE RACINE COMMUNITY. Mahogany Gallery is a premier art gallery and creative space dedicated to educating, exhibiting and exploring the works by artists of color. The gallery was founded in 2019 by Scott Terry, an artist and educator who saw a need for a space where Black artists could showcase their work. Located in Racine, Wisconsin, Mahogany features a rotating exhibit of works by local, national, and international artists. The gallery also hosts a variety of events, including art workshops, lectures, and performances. The space was the site of a Black gallery in the ’80s that Terry frequented. He believes it was destined to host artists again, 30 years later. One of the goals of Mahogany Gallery is to provide a space for Black artists to connect with the community. The gallery also offers a variety of educational programs, including art workshops for 18 18

children and adults. In addition to its regular exhibits, Mahogany Gallery hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. In 2023, the gallery hosted its 2nd annual Black Art & Culture Expo, affectionately referred to as Expo2, a collaborative and inclusive community celebration of Black creatives in the arts, locally, nationally and historically. Expo2 is a twomonth long series of events that encompasses activities held at UW-Parkside, Mahogany Black Arts & Cultural Center, and other venues throughout Racine and Milwaukee. Mahogany Gallery is a great place to learn about Black art and culture. The gallery offers a variety of educational programs and events, and its exhibits are always changing. Whether you’re an artist, art lover, or just someone who wants to learn more about Black culture, Mahogany Gallery is a valuable resource for the Racine community. 19
