STUDENT ATHLETE EXPERIENCE

LU Women’s Basketball

CHAMPS/Life Skills Program The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was developed by the NCAA to prepare studentathletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field Based on the premise that student-athletes, by virtue of their involvement in athletics, have a difficult time accessing campus-wide student activities, programming and experiences, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to provide student-athletes with education and experiences to assist them in bridging the gap from college life to professional life and to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The program was designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs, focusing on the person as a whole — academically, athletically and emotionally — and on the changing needs and skills of that person in the years during and after college. The program stresses five points of learning. The five areas of commitment viewed as critical to personal growth include: academic excellence, athletics excellence, personal development, service and career development. For instance, the academic commitment focuses on study skills, goal-setting, time management, while personal development may include fiscal responsibility, stress management and sports nutrition.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

The Lamar Student Athlete Advisory Committee offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives. The SAAC is dedicated to promoting a positive student-athlete image within the athletic programs and creating the executive leaders of tomorrow.

Some of the activities that are scheduled annually for the student-athletes include a welcome for all freshmen and transfers to kickoff the new year. The athletics department staff and other university staff attend and interact with the new student-athletes and welcome them to Lamar University.

The mission of the NCAA and Lamar University's SAAC is to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image

Guest speakers will be brought in throughout the year to help the student-athletes cope with the rigors of balancing college life with academics and athletics.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE LU Women’s Basketball

Lamar Athletics Mission Statement Lamar University is committed to an intercollegiate athletic program that embodies academic, athletic and financial integrity. This constancy must be manifest primarily in an athletic program which is always in concert with the overall mission of the University and complements the values and goals of higher education. As a part of the total educational process at Lamar, the intercollegiate athletic program should bring pride, admiration and loyalty to the University. In this context, the Lamar University intercollegiate athletic program will benefit the student body, alumni, faculty, staff and local community through the development of esprit de corps. The soundness of the athletic program must also be evident in a commitment to enhance the educational growth and development of student-athletes and to abide by the letter and spirit of the rules and regulations set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and The Southland Conference.

Robin Harmony Head Coach 3rd Season

2015-16 Information Guide

18

#PeckEm

LU Women’s Basketball Robin Harmony enters her third season as women’s basketball coach at Lamar after being named to the position on April 30, 2013. Harmony has enjoyed plenty of success in her first two seasons at Lamar, winning a Southland Conference regular-season championship and competing in the WNIT in her first campaign and following that with a second-place conference finish this past season. Harmony coached a pair of All-Southland Conference players in each of her first season, as guard Gia Ayers was named to the first team and forward Dominique Edwards was a second-team selection in 2013-14, while JaMeisha Edwards was a first-team choice and Dominique Edwards was a third-team choice. Harmony’s success prompted Lamar Director of Athletics Jason Henderson to sign her to a contract extension this spring, ensuring that Harmony would stay at Lamar through the 2017-18 season. Harmony came to Lamar from St. Thomas University, where she spent six seasons as the school’s first-ever women’s basketball coach, posting an impressive 13148 record. Harmony, a two-time Sun Conference Coach of the Year, led the Bobcats to three appearances in the NAIA National Championships. The Bobcats never had a losing season under Harmony, and went 27-4 with a perfect 14-0 Sun Conference record in her last season before losing in the first round of the NAIA National Championships. A defensive-minded coach, Harmony’s philosophy paid office at St. Thomas as the Bobcats twice ranked second in the nation in scoring defense and twice were in the top five for steals per game, 3-point field-goal percentage defense and turnover margin. Prior to her time as head coach at St. Thomas, Harmony spent 18 seasons on the coaching staff of her alma mater, the University of Miami, the last 12 seasons as associate head coach. Harmony acted as interim coach for two games in her final season with the Hurricanes, posting victories in both contests. During her time at Miami, Harmony helped the Hurricanes win three Big East regular-season championships, two Big East Conference Tournament Championships, reaching the postseason seven times and advance to the Sweet 16 on one occasion. Harmony, who was assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator for one season at Fairleigh Dickinson, was a standout player for the University of 2015-16 Information Guide

Miami. The first women’s basketball player inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame, Harmony totaled 1,308 points, 750 rebounds, 445 assists and 314 steals in a school-record 125 games. Harmony still holds the school record for assists in a game with 14 in a contest against Florida International University on Dec. 4, 1982. She is 10th in career points and fifth in career rebounds at Miami. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in education and recreation form Miami, Harmony played one season of professional basketball in England, helping her club, the Avon Cosmetics, win a league championship while earning Most Valuable Player Honors. Harmony, who earned a master’s degree in sports administration from St. Thomas, is a graduate of Hershey (Pa.) High School, where she was a three-year starter.
