A STAR IS BORN Fresh, crisp, and beachy are the signature features of interior designer Kelly Konoske’s projects. Konoske, above left, is the 2019 Detroit Home Design Awards Rising Star!

W H E N K E L LY K O N O S K E W A S A young girl, she’d sit at her family’s kitchen table with her dad, builder Rob Mossburg, and sketch houses. “I grew up around building and design,” says our Brian Killian Rising Star and president of Cottage Company Interiors. Cottage Company Interiors is a design firm and a sister business of The Cottage Company, which offers construction and remodeling services. Both of her parents, Rob and Vee, work at the Harbor Springs-based firms (as do her grandfather, aunt, and husband), but in the past year, Konoske took over the reins of the interior design component from her moth-

er, who now occasionally does design work for spec homes.Her new title is a position Konoske has been working toward since joining the firm six years ago, when she left behind a job in marketing in Los Angeles to return to Michigan. The challenge was convincing her husband, a native Californian, to do the same. Konoske, who was born in California, grew up in Kansas, and spent summers in northern Michigan, says that as a designer she gets to exercise both sides of her brain (she has a business degree from Pepperdine University and a master’s of business from Chapman University). She’s also taken courses from a UCLA extension program toward a master’s

degree in interior design/architecture. “Nature’s beauty is found everywhere I look,” says Konoske, who weaves those observations into her designs. The result is beautiful spaces that call to mind a Michigan beach on a pretty summer’s day. Fresh, light, textured, and comfortable are the hallmarks of this upand-comer, who’s also green-certified. This summer, Konoske will reveal a private label furniture line called Cottage By Kelly. Her furnishings will, naturally, evoke a coastal feel; lakes, bluffs, dunes, and beaches inspire this new casual-but-elegant line, all within the cottage aesthetic. “It’s comfort with high design,” she says.

IN PURSUIT OF PEACE …AND FISH Standing in water just above her knees, the angler flicks back her fly rod and swiftly releases forward with an expertly timed snap landing the fly and line onto the Jordan River’s slightly rippled surface. Twilight is beginning to gather. The river is alive with all kinds of bugs and bursts from below. The hungry trout are biting. And the serenity that accompanies this scene is a kind of balm that soothes even the most turbulent of times for fishing enthusiasts: it’s what everyone is seeking to soak in. That and a tug on the line. Long before the novels ‘A River Runs Through It’, ‘Jaws’ and ‘Big Two-Hearted’ (it’s not just a great beer), fishing or angling – whether at sea in a big charter boat, from a canoe on a lake or standing in a river wearing waders – has long held an apothecary-like appeal for the common man. Grandparents gently instruct small children to hook stale bread onto safety pins secured to a stick by string for spring fever distraction after ponds thaw. As kids grow, flashlights and fat night crawlers emerge on dark nights for some afterhours creek dipping. Later as equipment and access to licenses become a necessity, adults buy back time and memories

through a sport that brings in over $5 billion (yes, that’s billion with a big B) and supports over 70,000 jobs annually in Michigan. It’s a gigantic net of an industry that goes way beyond charter boats, bait shops, fancy equipment and tech tools to find where the big boys are hiding. Cities that host sports angling tournaments tend to rely on the bump in sales during certain aquatic seasons that feature fish related activities prominently throughout the year. However, the cities that lure outdoor enthusiasts are not alone. Michigan’s outstanding natural resources also figure prominently as an economic strategy in the attracting of top talent for Michigan based employers. A 2017 Michigan Department of Natural Resources survey on outdoor recreation revealed that residents of the state of Michigan spent a combined 2.6 billion days per year playing outdoors. The activities vary, but the most popular tend to have a water element to them: fishing and boating. And fishing is split into two categories: fishing and ice fishing. According to the State of Michigan’s 2017 Governor’s Commission study on the role of water, the Commission, “recommended support of and access

Additionally, Michigan fishing activities garnered over $11.2 million in federal funding for fish and aquatic habitat conservation from the 1.2 million licensed participants – rounding out the top five in the country. The Michigan DNR released the totals from its recent fall fish-stocking effort: nine different species totaling 834,175 fish that weighed nearly 11.5 tons; the fish were stocked at 76 locations throughout the entire state. THE BIG BAIT DEBATE Fish are fickle. The state has approximately 146 fish species that range from minnows to sturgeon, so lures and techniques are virtually infinite. That said, there are certain baits which have been found to be best by experienced local anglers for catching game fish in Michigan waters. Typically effective live baits include streamers, mayfly nymphs, eggs sacs/roe and your standard small minnows. But what’s in a worm, you might ask, that makes it so very alluring to fish? Interestingly, it’s not even their regular diet, since worms live in soil and fish in water. Fish love movement and, anecdotally, most fisherman will tell you you’ll catch a lot more fish with a live worm than a dead one. So this seems reasonable enough. And, who knows, perhaps the fish even like the scent. So, what’s up with Walt’s? Walt’s Crawlers was founded in 1983 by Walter Swiderski and is arguably one of the most popular bait sellers regionally, selling millions of

worms and a variety of non-worm bait primarily to convenience stores. Canadian night crawlers, Belgian worms, leaches, wax worms, red worms, green crawlers and spawn are its bread and butter, so to speak, for fish. Located in Otsego County, about 8-1/2 miles north of Gaylord (Vanderbilt), Walt sold over $500,000 in night crawler worms to bait shops in five states to over 500 customers, according to his obituary from Petoskeynews.com. Swiderski sold his business in 1997 to Rick and Becky Cope, but the company still bears Walt’s name. He passed away on April 7, 2009. Beyond the bulging, squiggly worms, there are more finessed techniques that big fish really wish they could feast on, such as lures with names like Daredevil spoons, Stickbaits and Red eyed spoons. Think: Shiny, snap and snag! There’s also the dizzying classes of tied flies: different color flies require trial and error testing, yet the ones that readily get gobbled are the Howie Green Crinkle and the Pickles Sunshine. Flies that are green and glowing tend to be really prodigious. Take a class from a fly tying master and you’ll soon be hooked, too.

Q: How did the initial concept of acquiring fine packaged goods, wines/spirits come about and why did the first owners (your family) think it would be a good selling point ‘Up North’?

Present Day, 2019

A: Dad saw an opportunity in the 50s. He saw many fine

stores here in Petoskey. Stores that could only survive if customers of refined taste were there to support them. He figured if they have refined taste for clothing etc., they surely would appreciate fine foods. Dad would bring in 200 pound wheels of Swiss cheese from Otto Roth out of NYC. He was the first to import Toblerone (chocolate) from Switzerland. Importers from all over would travel to northern Michigan and stay with my parents at their home. Fine foods came in from all over the world. People loved it. The seasonal residents loved getting away from the busy world they were from, but they didn’t want to give up the cuisine they were used to. Adding the wine was a no brainer. With the help of Joe Ganci and General Wine out of Detroit, the wine program was born.

Q: How did the additional businesses (Chandler’s,

Pierson’s, Mitchell Street Pub) come into the mix and what ultimately prompted your family to extend the Symons brand to the ‘sit down’ restaurant concept?

A: It was an accident, sort of. In the 80s, Mom, against Dad’s

better judgement, expanded the concept and introduced freshly baked breads, croissants and cookies. Soon after she added the deli sandwich program. It was a hit and a huge catalyst of things to come. After school I came home to work for the Company. Shortly thereafter I received my first paycheck. Let’s just say it wasn’t what I had hoped for. I immediately headed for my parents office and alerted them I couldn’t possibly live off of this level of income. Without hesitation they looked at me and proclaimed “If you want to make more money, go out and make more money for the Company.” Whoa - real life motivation. So we expanded the General Store into what is now the wine cellar with a goal of simply opening bottles of wine for shoppers that were interested in wine hoping they would buy more wine if they could taste it. But to get the license we needed food service and 50 seats! And so Chandler’s was born. Named after my dad by the way.....not me. When we first opened we would jump up and down with excitement if we did 20 covers on a Saturday night in the summer. Now we do double that for happy hour in April. With the help of Chef Tommy Kaszubowski and all the incredible staff we have and have had over the years and all of the support of our guests, Chandler’s has become what it is today. Never in a million years would I have guessed it. I certainly can’t take credit for thinking it up.

: Do you, yourself, have a background in the Food & Beverage industry beyond your family history?

A

: As I child, my parents were always hosting dinner parties and cocktail parties. And if they were attending as a guest they were dragging me along - back in the 70s it seemed more appropriate than it does today. flying in something. Lobster from Maine. Halibut from Alaska. And let’s not forget dad’s freezer. He would always bring back something from his numerous hunting or fishing trips. Bear, Elk, Dahl Sheep, Caribou, Ducks, Geese, Venison, Moose. Philosophy in our house was if you shoot it, you eat it. It’s not always easy to make some of this stuff taste good but thank God for Mom. She is an amazing cook and could take all this stuff and make it taste delicious. Additionally as a young man I was intimidated by all the ingredients stocked in the General Store. What did I know about Shad Roe or Vichyssoise? What the heck did you do with Helix Escargot or Saffron? What even is Marzipan! After graduating from Michigan State with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management, I had the opportunity to attend the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena, California. Working next to the Executive Chef of the Ritz Carleton in San Diego or the Private Chef for the then owner of the Seattle Seahawks can really boost a young man’s confidence.

: What are your personal favorite items that only Symons stocks?

A

: The wine. Duh. But besides that I love the Ham & Cheese Croissants. I love the amazing selection of cheese we offer and all the accoutrements that go with cheese. Olive oil, balsamic vinegars, amazing pasta and sauces. It’s all so yummy!

: Any anecdotal personal memories or celebrity stories you’d like to share?

A: Everyone is a celebrity. I’ve been sworn to secrecy. Q

: What’s your favorite place (other than your own establishments) to dine in the world?

A

: I love Balthazar in NYC, Hub 51 in Chicago, Boulevard in San Francisco, Parc in Detroit, Gott’s Roadside in St Helena, CA and of course, Mom’s house. Just to name a few.
