ONCE YOU DECIDE TO TAKE UP AN EXCURSION ON THE 40-MILE INLAND WATERWAY (THAT’S 80 FOR A FULL ROUND TRIP), YOU’RE IN FOR THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME. THIS IS NO AVERAGE ‘THREE HOUR TOUR.’ IN FACT, IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO MAKE THE ENTIRE JOURNEY IN A DAY. MOST CHOOSE MINI-TRIPS SO THEY DON’T FEEL RUSHED TO COMPLETE THE EXPERIENCE ALL AT ONCE. AND IT’S SO WORTH THE ANTICIPATION FOR THE NEXT ONE. Its origins are rooted in the original Native American portage, planting and trading heritage dating back close to 3,000 years. Some 50 Native American encampments could be found in the area at any time during this period. To avoid the fierce waters around the Tip of the Mitt, Native Americans traveling from the south (Odawa, Chippewa, Ojibway, among others) chose a route that would allow for safe passage far away from the unpredictable weather and dangerous

shoreline north on Lake Michigan or back south from Lake Huron to reach the fertile planting grounds near Mackinaw City while taking advantage of abundant fresh water fishing and trapping waters inland. The optimal point of portage was the furthest spot northeast on Little Traverse Bay nearest to Round Lake. A short overland route took their canoes to a launch point on Crooked Lake and from then on it was best to set traps, fish and continue north onto Burt Lake via

Yacht Club Crooked River, then Mullet Lake via Indian River, and ultimately coming out onto Lake Huron from the Cheboygan River near the secluded Duncan Bay to camp and trade. The last leg of their journey continued onto the Straits of Mackinaw to meet up with other Native Americans and traders to exchange their bounty and plant. Then return to harvest. And repeat. For centuries. The route continued to be a resourceful access for other industrious inhabitants who settled along its gentle shores in the 18th and 19th centuries. First came the European traders who exchanged goods with the native dwellers. Then the American lumber barons who utilized it for fallen timber conveyance and milling, and eventually mail transport via boat. One of the longest running paper mills in Michigan still operates in KIDDLEAVY.COM
Cheboygan, the privately owned Great Lakes Tissue Company (formerly a P&G plant). Fisherman still enjoy pulling Walleye and Pike out of these waters warmed by the spillway. But soon, the tranquil waters of the Inland Waterway were abandoned for the growing railroads (and eventually roadways), leaving the fresh waters for hunting, sport fishing and charter boat cruises. With the advent of summertime tourists arriving from downstate and further south, coupled with the ever expanding cottage communities, the past time of riverboat launch tours became extraordinarily popular. Today, the Inland Water Route Historical Society (IWRHS) and Museum, located in Alanson, has commissioned the Great Lakes Boat Building School (GLBBS) in Cedarville to build a 30-foot fiberglass replica of a Truscott 30 fantail launch. The 12 passenger, two crew vessel will conduct historical, ecological, and paid general tours of the Inland Waterway route’s three connecting rivers, Pickerel Lake, Crooked Lake, Burt Lake and Mullet Lake. The IWRHS will also offer special historical and ecological tours for regional K-12 schools. In addition, the boat also offers a unique learning opportunity for boat school students as it is a United States Coast Guard Inspected Vessel which requires construction oversight by the Coast Guard and follows a very detailed set of standards and laws associated with commercial vessels. The original boat was first built in St. Joseph, Michigan in the early 1900s. During 2017-18, boat school second-year students will learn mechanical and electrical systems as well as finishing techniques. They will then design and install the entire electrical system, fire suppression, exhaust, fuel and mechanical systems including engine, shaft and steering systems. The delivery of the boat is expected in 2018. The most exciting way to enjoy the Inland Waterway’s treasures, however, is to navigate the route yourself. If you’re captaining your own boat, be aware that boats up to 65 feet long are welcome on the waterway, and the route is dredged to 5 feet deep and 30 feet wide, with minimum bridge clearance at 16.7 feet. There are also two locks to pass through: one 15-foot on the Cheboygan River (fee
required), and one 2-foot on the Crooked River in Alanson (free). Even if you don’t own your own watercraft, pontoons, fishing boats, ski boats, kayaks and canoes are available along the way to rent at various marinas, including Indian River Marina (231)-238-9373; The Landings on Indian River (231)-238- 9955; or Alanson’s Ryde Marine (231)-347-8273. After experiencing the twisty turns, locks and marsh flows, throw in an anchor at one of the many sand bars or swimming areas on one of the lakes to swim, sunbathe, snap a few photos and just simply ‘be on the water; Take a bite/ sip/shop break in one (or three!) of the charming towns located along the way (Conway, Oden, Alanson, Indian River, Topinabee, Cheboygan). Don’t miss the chance to see the ‘swinging bridge’ in Alanson. Close by, the lesser of the two locks on Crooked River also provides one with a bird’s eye view of conservation efforts in the form of a working dam and fish weir. The Crooked River Lock was opened in 1968 and serves to control the water levels in our local watershed and the river below the locks. Even though the weather and occasional technological mishaps continue to challenge this Army Corp of Engineers lock, dam and weir, the structure has served the community in a steadfast manner for 50 years. In 1969 the lock opened and in the first season 9,151 vessels passed through the waterway exchange. For those desiring to enjoy a longer break by disembarking onto land, check out some of the north’s best nature viewing sites, such as the Oden State Fish Hatchery, Burt Lake State Park, Maple Bay State Forest or Aloha State Park. You won’t be disappointed by the amazing biodiversity in the area, glimpsing an occasional beaver dam, a multitude of fish and a vast array of migrating and native birds.
At every turn, vantage point or deep dive, you’ll be making one of ‘Up North’s most treasured and memorable experiential journeys, which today, thanks to conservation efforts and historic preservation, have left us with what is considered the best example of Michigan’s longest continuous inland waterway.

The new buzzword in the foodie set is “farm to table.” Suddenly, it’s fashionable to demand that your food is locally sourced. But you know that, fashionable or not, locally sourced food is incredibly important in Northern Michigan. People here have embraced this movement in many small ways for decades. The farm to table movement is anything but a food fad. Unlike fads, which swiftly disappear after their moment in the sun, the farm to table movement is a lifestyle choice that is here to stay. The benefits of eating locally grown food are numerous. Of course, there is an obvious benefit to consumers: fresh, delicious food, picked at its peak of ripeness and in your hands in hours. Because local foods have to travel so little, they can be harvested when fully ripe, instead of being picked before ripeness or worse, engineered to withstand shipping. But the benefits extend beyond the taste of your dinner. WHY LOCAL? Many small, local farms are organic farms, meaning they use no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. They use no hormones, antibiotics, or GMOs. What organic farms do instead, include a variety of strategies to combat pests and improve the soil. Farmers intentionally rotate crops to help ward off diseases. They test their soil and add nutrients, in the form of compost or rock powders, for example, as needed. Additionally, they plant ground cover in the winter. This prevents erosion and thereby nutrient loss, and it creates the perfect habitat for microbes that are beneficial to plants. The end result of these practices is healthier food, with more nutrients and fewer chemicals for consumers, and a thriving environment. Organic farming promotes ecological balance between nature and farming. It contributes to greater biodiversity and healthy soil. Local and organic farms are able to preserve heirloom fruits and vegetables that are in danger of being lost forever. These heirloom varieties cannot maintain their quality in shipping, so most corporate farms will not grow them. Buying from local farms also can help the economy. More money stays in the community, and local jobs are created. Partnerships are often created among
farmers, restaurants, bakeries, and shops. Local farms are getting a boost from the Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities. Its mission is to “protect the environment, strengthen the economy, and build community.” One of Groundwork’s programs, “Taste the Local Difference,” aims to help farmers, restaurants, specialty food producers, and more with their marketing in order to increase the amount of food sold in Michigan that comes from Michigan farms and food businesses. One restaurant involved in Taste the Local Difference is Julienne Tomatoes. Located in downtown Petoskey, Julienne Tomatoes serves breakfast and lunch, featuring food grown at Royal Farms in Ellsworth and Coveyou Scenic Farms in Petoskey. The Groundworks Center is a host site for FoodCorps, a grantee of AmeriCorps. FoodCorps’ mission is to “instill a schoolwide culture of health.” One program they have created in area schools encourages students to try new fruits, vegetables, and legumes grown in Michigan. After tasting, students vote on if they “loved it,” “liked it,” or “tried it.” Students learn about the fruit or vegetable of the month and receive a brochure with information about the food and the recipe used to prepare

Even the government is realizing the importance of getting locally grown food into our daily lives. The 10 Cents a Meal for School Kids and Farms program was piloted in 2016-2017. Participating school districts receive up to ten cents per meal in matching funds to buy and serve Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and legumes. The program was initially so well received that the legislature increased funding for it for the 2017-2018 school year. FARMS AS DESTINATIONS The farm to table movement in Northern Michigan reaches beyond

The protected water for which Harbor Springs is named is the deepest and one of the best sailing experiences in all the Great Lakes, with its niche carved out of the northern rim of Little Traverse Bay. Once sailors venture out into open water, however, conditions can vary dramatically from glass flat to six-foot rollers, which is ideally suited for the sailors, since wind and waves are what they desire. The Little Traverse Bay region is well known for its prevailing thermal winds, where land heats up under the sun with the water temperature remaining cool. This meteorological condition is augmented by the topography of the surrounding bluffs and hilly areas encompassing the bay and the coastal region out on Lake Michigan nearby, providing a constant breeze that builds from morning into the afternoon hours. “Ugotta Regatta is the height of the social calendar on Little Traverse Bay,” insisted Robert Rogier of Walstrom Marine and who also grew up within Bay View Association. “Sailors (and visitors) are hard pressed to find a more picturesque racing destination than Little Traverse Bay.” The LTYC, founded in 1895, plays host to the competitive racing event, but the true heart of the weekend’s festivities can be found in the local residents embrace of the annual traditions that surround the sailing spectacular. The regatta officially begins with One Design racing on Friday, however the unofficial celebration kicks off at the crack of dawn Friday morning with the formation of a lengthy line of devoted T-shirt collectors outside Irish Boat Shop. For as long as most folks can remember (going back decades) true regatta followers have eagerly anticipated the revealing of the Irish Boat Shop Ugotta Regatta limited edition T-shirt. “We have so much fun coming up with a new t-shirt design every year – it’s what saves our sanity in late winter when it seems like summer will never come,” noted Susan (Irish) Stewart, of Irish Boat Shop. “Regatta is a homecoming. Boats we race against in the Mackinac races, sailors who grew up here and moved away, they are all in town for Regatta. It’s like having the entire family home for a holiday – we’re full and busy, and we love it!” The event really does have a familial feel to it, especially for the Irish Boat Shop
clan. Dave Irish, patriarch of the family and host of what was formerly infamously called “The Friends of Dave Party” on Friday night at the family business, credits LTYC Past Commodore Fred Ford for coming up with the moniker ‘Ugotta Regatta.’ “He was the one who got things started, a real sparkplug,” Irish said. Sailing truly is in the Irish family blood. “When my family moved up here from Mt. Clemens in October of 1943, we didn’t come by car or train. We sailed up and lived on our boat in the harbor until it got too cold. We finally moved onto land in late November.” Irish knows a thing or two about competitive racing, too, with extensive win lists and sailing accomplishments, including serving as president of the United States Sailing Association and vice president of World Sailing (the globe’s governing body of the sport). The weekend progresses with the Little Traverse Sailors Race Program hosting pancake breakfasts both Saturday and Sunday mornings, that are open to the public, at the Yacht Club. Part of the fun is watching Junior Racers flip not-ready-for-primetime pancakes over their shoulders to land on the roof of the sail shed behind them. The LTYC also hosts parties at the Club during the weekend for Regatta participants. With 88 sailboats (22 foot and above) slated to participate in the 2018 Regatta, the event brings hundreds of crew members and their families to the Petoskey-Harbor Springs region. “This regatta brings together not only terrific sailors, but also truly professional race officials, and an army of volunteers,” commented Stewart, “And our Irish Boat Shop crew works hard that weekend, hosting the party on Friday night, and launching, docking, and fixing boats all weekend long. Our docks empty out because everyone is out either racing or watching. That’s what boats are for.” Race enthusiasts can either head out onto the water in their own or rented nautical craft (dozens of non-racing sailboats, power boats, jet skis, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards can be seen on the water that weekend) or watch from shore. There are several great vantage points to observe from around the bay. In Harbor Springs, Zoll Street Beach and the Harbor Springs bluff are superb for

up-close observation of boats departing and returning to the marina. In Petoskey, head to Petoskey State Park, Petoskey’s Sunset Park or the famous Petoskey Marina Breakwall where the blooming of spinnaker sails, especially during the ‘Tour of the Bay’ races, are great vantage points for viewing the spectacle.
