Hutchinson, has made a compassionate plea for “a total transformation of the sector in order to confront the systemic challenges that confront it.” During his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament on Tuesday July 9, Hutchinson said Jamaican agriculture needs a “renaissance,” a renewal to address the systemic challenges that confront farmers. “We are in the process of addressing and redressing those challenges,” he said. “The continuous cry from the farmers for a market to be provided for most of their crops has been getting louder; they have been suffering at the hands of the praedial thieves.” Covering a wide range of issues affecting agriculture, Hutchinson said the costs of inputs, especially seeds, are exorbitant. The large amount of produce that is left to rot in the field is sometimes more than what they are able to sell due often to a lack of market and financing for the young entrepreneur is absent. “We are importing produce like carrot, Irish potato, red peas, gungo, onion and cantaloupe, all of which can be grown right here in Jamaica, so that we can be self-sufficient,” he explained. Hutchinson reiterated his call for the removal of GCT on imported seeds and refrigerated trucks. he Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial and Food Show is scheduled for August 4-6, 2019 at the Denbigh Showgrounds, May Pen Clarendon. Prime Minister Andrew Holness will host the president of Kenya, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta on the August 6, while Agriculture Minister Audley Shaw will address the Show on August 5. The Denbigh Show has enjoyed success as the Caribbean's premier agricultural event and epitomizes wholesome family entertainment and attracts over 80,000 patrons to the event annually. The Show is the oldest, largest and most dynamic Agricultural Show in the English speaking Caribbean and one of Jamaica's most iconic event that was held for the first time in 1952 and since then as reminded us each year of what we have achieved in agriculture and its related sectors.
