This home was built for Mr. and Mrs. Zheng, a farming couple living in the Chinese countryside. Mr. Zheng is disabled from the waist down and is mobile by the help of his wheelchair, the homes simple design took into account his limited mobility. The flat concrete roof and staircase were built for future expansion to additional floors for other members of the Zheng family.

The project was a part of the Habitat for Humanity organization,as part of the global village outreach program. Working in a team of 21, my team and I organized systems to build each element of the house.

Alley parti utilizes four thick walls that run across the site from entry to the rear yard view outlook. The walls direct attention to the view overlooking the city of Los Angeles and also create three clear alleys into which the homes program is divided.

While the rear remains open taking advantage of the view, the front of the home is separated from the street by privacy walls running perpendicular to the primary stone walls. The walls receive a textured treatment, celebrating their contraditiction to the alley walls.

Right The primary and perpendicular wall types for Alley Parti created clear boundaries from which to distribute the program for the home.

Expounding on classical precedent with respect for classical proportion and the french beaux-arts I was given the task of developing the exterior elevations through research and study.

The floorplan was developed with a clear understanding of how the homes massing would appear. Consideration was paid to the overall proportion of the massing of the house as well as the symmetry inherent in beaux-arts buildings.

The concept sketch was an initial pass at understanding the level of ornament the building would have and where the detail would be placed on the facade. The client was interested in more ornate and detailed french buildings. Our detail and ornament is inspired by precedent buildings found through research. All elements were developed into a new composition of a beaux-arts inspired residence.

Positioned as a sheltered extension of the surrounding walkways at a bustling urban crossroads, Off - Kilter leverages heavy foot traffic to encourage interaction with the neighborhood. At times the glazed ends open, further erasing the line between inside and out. The passageway, curiously bent, provides two clear zones for curation. the interior wall

panels operate to provide added flexibility to the artist or market, transforming Off Kilter into a new form of urban bazaar.

Peeling plates looks to blend the properties of program and circulation. After studying formal qualities of peeling and ramping planar surfaces these qualities were used to explore a mission of accessibility for a public building.

Continuous walking surface by way of ramps as well as incorporating the el stop help to eliminate barriers and bring in maximum public foot traffic to enjoy a more open and accessibly type of library.

A series of partner studies on pivoting were produced utilizing four stage types: [Proscenium, Traverse, Thrust and In-the-Round]. Cannibalizing these primitive studies we designed an irregular grid as a basis for developing the stage space. The pipe field was designed to create pathways for actors. Each pipe is cut in 2 or 3 segments which then bends to the movements of the actors. Action _ Reaction becomes an interactive setting for Ionesco’s story.

Wrong Identity explores the effects of altering right to wrong concerning our built environment. Beginning with studies applied to various forms through five obstructions: surface, proportion, scale, context and privacy. Using the Chicago theater as a right, study how altering right to wrong affects architectural identity at three scales: city, building and interior.

The Chicago theater experiences it’s wrong identity in the the juxtaposition of similar and familiar signage from other cities. Signifying place, signs contribute to creating an identity. The signage taken is reappropriated for the city of Chicago.

When the wrong is applied at each scale a new effect on the surrounding environment is revealed.
