BLURRING BOUNDARIES
CONTEXTUALISING INTERIOR SPACE MAKING
The studio Project explores the interface between interior architecture and its ‘context’ in design. The program brief given was to redesign a tea bunglow at samabeong tea estate in kalimpong district, north bengal. The project aims on blurring boundaries between interior and exterior spaces such that the context is felt in the interior spaces also. Given site condition has breathtaking landscapes of tea gardens and pine forest. Which opened the opportunity to take the built form in the forest and open up the form to let the context inside the space. The choice of materials made is minimal in its raw form.
Open tunnel driving to silence and its volume makes me feel grounded. The verticality in bamboo allows the natural light to pass through it which seems linear lines to me, the thin and fragile grass lets me see the wind flowing through it. The tea gardens covers the land and gets merged with the ground. The Silence felt at day had clouds touching my face and cool breeze flowing through the space. Clouds covered many of the trees and soon the whole space was inside it. Whereas Silence felt at night has stillness in cold and lights in the town almost feels like stars tucked on the mountain hill. The starry sky can be felt with silhouettes of pines in the foreground.
The first impression of the site context was the changing topography from dense pine forest leading to mountains covered in tea plantation through a narrow tunnel of bamboo and fine grass.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The Phenomena of Crown shyness in trees which lets the light penetrate through is taken as an inspirtation from the site context..
and
Formation of green spaces on the basis of concept derivation. Central axis lobby connects the courtyards. Functional spaces are formed around the courtyards and lobby.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Initial expression of concept to incorporate vegetation of the context in the built form. A central axis is extablished from the pine forest towards the edge of the site. Functional spaces are placed around this axis and small pockets of green space are created between each space.
The Concept sketch is imagined to be a villa amidst nature where the built form the background
nature is the foreground.

SANGAM
REVIVE & REUSE: HOSPITALITY SPACES
Sangam is imagined to be a hospitality project functioning as an event hotel. The site is an old colonial building located in the dense urban landscape of ahmedabad. Considering the old structure, all the event spaces are designed independent of the old building. A new extension is added in the front part of the old building complementing elements like arches and the roof. The old and the new has a connecting bridge on the first and the second floors. The Interior spaces are created vibrant with more use of shiny elements like brass and copper. The marble flooring makes the space look more spacious and lit. Whereas the dark colors in the furniture makes a balance and neutralize the spaces. Here one can experience glam and bright spaces as well as relaxing and soothing spaces.

RUA BALACAO, a journey to sunset TRAVELLER’S HOME
• Recognition
Rua Balacao which suggest street with balconies is imagined to be a Traveller’s village. Where individuals or group who are seeking a work from home scenario during staycation are welcomed. Extracting the attributes of balcony in Goa, the active visual connection to the street is emphasised in the project. Utilising the level difference of site and the sun movement a meandering street is the stitched with various pauses in between. The intention is to culminate this journey to an open space marking the point of viewing the dramatic sunset. Having studied the balconies of goa as a spatial element, It was the core design tool to develop concept. The design is inspired by the spatial roles of a balcony such as connection with the street.
The direction of natural resources such as sun and wind were the driving factors for the angles used in the design. Those angles later developed into indoor street. The house slowly unravels its corners and inward looking balconies play the role of connectivity between interior spaces. The street then ends upto a gather space while fully unraveling the wide view of horizon.
A warm moonlit night in may is time for the troubadours to serande the pretty senhorinhas in their balconies. They wend through the silent streets in harmonious groups, with a vast and varied ear splitting repertoire, followed by a couple of melodious konkani mandos to calm the irate parents and finally the sentimental portugese fados dedicated to the querida in the balcony.
