Sample text: --- Chronic Kidney Disease Nurses must recognize and care for patients suffering from various kidney diseases, such as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or Acute Renal Failure. Kidneys play an integral part in filtering blood, eliminating wastes from our bodies and stimulating red blood cell production they also regulate blood pressure, ensure healthy bones are present and manage chemicals necessary for bodily functioning and balance electrolyte levels within our systems. CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) is a progressive disorder in which kidney function gradually diminishes over time. The symptoms and complications vary depending on its cause elevated serum creatinine, anemia and hyperphosphatemia are among its effects, while its progression can be

measured using the renal function test known as GFR (glomerular filtration rate). Kidney damage is typically linked to poor diet and lifestyle choices, high blood pressure, or other diseases that impact kidneys however, genetics 139

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY FOR NURSES SIMPLIFIED as well as certain conditions like diabetes can increase one’s risk for kidney disease. Additionally, certain medications can adversely impact kidney health. For instance, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs), like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen (Aleve), have been known to harm kidneys. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to heavy metals such as lead, gasoline or solvents can damage them over time and also lead to health risks in kidneys. Damaged kidneys start working harder in an effort to compensate for their reduced function, leading them to release an enzyme known as renin that stimulates the body into raising blood pressure in an attempt to increase blood flow to their organsonly this does not work and may even decrease it further! Overtaxing one’s kidneys can eventually lead to permanent damage and lead to chronic renal failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which affects nearly every system in the body and increases risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, anemia, hyperkalemia, uric acidosis and pericarditis. At present, there are ways to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). These include maintaining a healthy weight and managing any conditions that contribute to kidney disease such as diabetes not smoking engaging in regular physical activity to lower blood pressure and adhering to a well-balanced diet limited in salt, sugar, protein and fat in order to lower risk. Education on chronic kidney disease is vital, because once you understand its risks you can take steps to combat them. Receiving annual screenings is another effective strategy in protecting your kidney health and should be discussed with your physician if any medications such as acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen naproxen celecoxib (Celebrex) could potentially harm you over time especially if other chronic conditions exist such as high blood pressure or heart disease are also present. --- Multiple Sclerosis MS is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks part of the central nervous system (CNS). The immune system attacks myelin sheath - which surrounds and protects nerve fibers - targeting it for erosion or damage that disrupts signal transmission from brain to other parts of body. Although not fully understood, it’s believed that both genetic and environmental factors play a part in its attack against myelin sheaths. MS typically appears between 20-40 years of age however, it can occur at any age. Women are two to three times more likely than men to develop MS. People with a family history are at increased risk. Certain infections such as measles, canine distemper and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) which causes infectious mononucleosis are also believed to contribute. Symptoms depend on which part of the CNS has been compromised and on how severe damage has been done to its myelin sheath, but may include

fatigue, difficulty walking, spasticity and impaired speech. Some individuals also experience cognitive issues such as memory loss and difficulty thinking clearly while others suffer vision problems such as blurred or double vision additional issues include blurred or double vision of either eye bladder and bowel issues may arise including urinary tract infections, constipation or diarrhea. Fatigue is one of the hallmark symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis and may be worsened by heat, humidity and medication side effects. Medication such as amantadine (Symmetrel), pemoline (Cylert) and modafinil (Provigil) may help treat it while diet changes and physical activity can also help decrease fatigue levels. MS is currently unknown, though many believe it to be an autoimmune condition. Autoimmunity occurs when the immune system attacks its own tissues during an attack of MS, myelin sheath cells known as oligodendrocytes degrade and form scar tissue that irritates nearby nerves, leading to symptoms associated with MS. Relapsing-remitting MS is the most prevalent form, where attacks of symptoms are followed by periods when symptoms don’t appear or lessen significantly. Other types of MS include progressive-disease MS and secondary relapsing-remitting MS, with similar symptoms to MS but being considered different diseases altogether other autoimmune diseases like Lupus and thyroid diseases may produce similar symptoms but do not qualify as MS itself. Scientists hope to uncover what triggers it so it can be prevented and treated more efficiently in future. --Lymphangitis Lymphangitis is an infection and inflammation of lymph vessels caused by primary infections. If left untreated, bacteria could spread into other parts of the body via the bloodstream, potentially leading to severe and even lifethreatening consequences like sepsis. The lymphatic system is a network of tubes, glands, cells and ducts located throughout the body that is one component of its immune system. It helps identify and fight infections by transporting lymph fluid to lymph nodes for processing then they filter it using white blood cells that defend against infections. When the lymphatic system becomes infected, it develops an inflamed appearance which is easily noticeable to the human eye. Tender red streaks may extend from the area of infection towards nearby lymph nodes fever, chills, and general feeling of illness may result. Lymphangitis bacteria may even enter your bloodstream causing sepsis to set in. Lymphangitis can be caused by infection with bacteria, viruses and fungi. Bacterial infections are the most prevalent cause, usually entering lymphatic channels through wounds or breaks in the skin and becoming established there. Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep) and Staphylococcus bacteria are often responsible Sporothrix schenckii and insect bites can also lead to this condition. In some instances, lymphangitis may not be diagnosed thus treatment often entails treating its source infection.

Antibiotics and other measures may help manage lymphangitis infections it is critical that those experiencing symptoms seek medical advice as soon as they

notice them to ensure that the 247 PATHOPHYSIOLOGY FOR NURSES

SIMPLIFIED infection doesn’t spread from their lymphatic system into the bloodstream and cause serious health complications. Anyone observing red streaks extending from an open wound or an abscess should seekmedical assistance immediately, as this constitutes a medical emergency and they should be admitted into hospital within 24 hours. The doctor will perform a physical exam to check for swollen lymph nodes or red streaks around the site of injury. Culture will also be taken in order to identify the bacteria causing lymphangitis, and antibiotics will be prescribed accordingly. If left untreated promptly, lymphangitis could spread throughout your lymphatic system within days and lead to serious complications, including sepsis. When caught early enough and treated promptly with antibiotics, outlook is generally good and symptoms usually resolve within several days of taking them. uEnd sample text./u ---- Ever felt the pure joy of understanding something complex?
