BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

The Okeechobee County Economic Development Corporation (OCEDC) and the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee (COC) are proud to combine their objectives into a groundbreaking initiative, the Business Retention and Expansion Program (BREP).

The BREP is designed to support the growth and sustainability of businesses in our rural community. The BREP is aimed at fostering a thriving business environment and ensuring the long-term prosperity of our community.

Key benefits of the Business Retention and Expansion Program include:

1. Customized Support: BREP will offer personalized assistance to local target industry businesses, addressing their specific needs and challenges. Through one-on-one consultations, businesses will receive tailored guidance on various aspects such as marketing, financing, workforce development, expansion and operational efficiency.

2. Access to Resources: The program will provide businesses with access to a comprehensive network of experts, industry connection roundtables and educational workshops, empowering them to enhance their competitiveness and sustainability.

3. Economic Stability: By proactively engaging with local businesses and addressing their concerns, BREP aims to create a more stable and resilient economic landscape. Retaining established businesses and supporting their expansion endeavors will contribute to job retention, stimulate local spending, and attract further investment into our community. BREP emphasizes the importance of fostering a business-friendly environment and ensuring the long-term prosperity of the community.

The Business Retention and Expansion Program represents a significant milestone in the collective efforts to support our local economy. By providing targeted support and resources to local businesses, Alex Tijerina, Director of Existing Industry for the OCEDC, and the COC team seek to retain and expand existing enterprises, thus driving economic growth and creating new opportunities for residents.

For more information on the BREP program, local target industries and contact information, please visit www.ocedcorp.com for the Okeechobee County Economic Development Corporation or www.okeechobeebusiness.com for the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County.

THE DYNAMIC FOUR

Okeechobee County Economic Development Corporation

The Okeechobee County Economic Development Corporation (OCEDC) was formed in 2018 by a group of business leaders who saw the need to create an organization which supports the retention and expansion of existing businesses and to attract new industry to the county. It is a public-private partnership with the city, county and private companies which have invested their time, money and talent to help ensure that Okeechobee County prospers through expansion of job opportunities.

The core mission of the OCEDC is to facilitate the connection between the public and private sectors to create an environment which encourages economic development and expansion of existing businesses and economic diversification by recruiting new businesses to Okeechobee County. Accomplishment of these two goals will provide an increase in job opportunities for citizens of Okeechobee County and ensure a more secure future for Okeechobee County.

Okeechobee Main Street

The Okeechobee Main Street program is designed to

improve all aspects of the Okeechobee downtown district, producing both tangible and intangible benefits. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation, and making downtown a vibrant destination to visit are critical to Okeechobee’s future.

Building on downtown’s inherent assets—rich architecture, personal service and traditional values, and most of all, a sense of place—Okeechobee Main Street, Inc. is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit member-based organization with roots dating back to 1980 when the National Trust for Historic Preservation formed the Main Street program. The organization just celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The Okeechobee Main Street approach rekindles entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern. Because it is a locally driven program, all initiatives stem from local issues and concerns. The Okeechobee Main Street program’s success is based on a comprehensive strategy of work, tailored to local needs in four distinctive areas, often referred to as the Four Point Approach.

Okeechobee Main Street has been the driving force behind the Arts & Culture programs in Okeechobee for 20 years. In 2018, OKMS became a Local Arts Agency for Okeechobee County. The Arts & Culture Alliance mis-

sion is to connect people to the arts and to each other, working to facilitate and nurture the creation, development, promotion and education of arts and culture in Okeechobee County.

An award-winning organization, Okeechobee Main Street’s vision is to help create a successful downtown and enrich our community through celebrating the arts, supporting local businesses, embracing our heritage, preserving our natural environment and promoting quality events which make Okeechobee an inviting hometown destination.

Okeechobee County Tourist Development Council

Okeechobee County’s Tourist Development Council (TDC) was established with the adoption of County Ordinance 62-128 in 1992. This tax allows the Tourist Development Council to find unique and creative ways to promote our community, inspiring visitors to come and explore. The Tourist Development Council promotes Okeechobee County as a desirable tourist destination, marketing campaigns and local events that enhance Okeechobee’s economy while preserving natural resources and the quality of life. This mission speaks to its

conscientious preservation of Old Florida’s natural beauty and “down-home” hospitality.

The TDC is a department within Okeechobee County supported by a group of individuals that volunteer their time to participate as a nine-member Advisory Board to ensure fiscal responsibility of the Tourist Development Tax. It responds to tourism-related issues or opportunities and develops marketing campaigns and plans as well as hosts community events that have strong economic impacts to Okeechobee. The TDC is the visitor’s resource for Okeechobee.

Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County

The Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County, Inc., stands as a beacon of collaboration and progress, embodying the spirit of a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) voluntary organization. Comprising dedicated business professionals, the Chamber is driven by a singular purpose—the promotion of civic and economic advancement within the community. At its core, the Chamber acts as a dynamic spokesperson, translating collaborative ideas into impactful actions. The focus is on connecting businesses with the community, fostering an environment where success and

prosperity flourish. A key player in the community’s growth, the Chamber is dedicated to fortifying businesses and cultivating a robust economic climate. The Chamber’s commitment extends beyond traditional roles, offering an array of classes, business networking programs, and personalized marketing spaces on its website. The educational spectrum spans diverse topics, ranging from marketing strategies to accounting principles, catering to the multifaceted needs of its members.

However, the Chamber’s purpose transcends information dissemination; it is a driving force behind holistic business community growth. The Leadership Okeechobee Program exemplifies this commitment, consisting of nine monthly, daylong sessions designed to expose participants to critical local issues, major industries, and per-

sonal skill assessments. Through initiatives like this, the Chamber actively contributes to cultivating strong business leaders and diversifying the local business landscape. The Chamber is not merely an informational hub; it is a catalyst for change. Its passionate collaboration with business owners contributes to creating a diverse and robust business community. With strength drawn from the diversity and number of its members, representing businesses of all sizes and professions, the Chamber influences investments and collectively achieves what no single business could accomplish alone. In essence, the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County, Inc., is more than an organization; it is a dynamic force shaping the economic destiny of the community, fostering growth, and empowering businesses to thrive in tandem with community prosperity.

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

& LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The Board of County Commissioners is the governing body of Okeechobee County, as established by the Florida Constitution, and serves as the legislative branch of county government. Okeechobee County operates under the administrative form of government. The five commissioners must reside in the districts they represent; however, they are chosen by a countywide vote. The five-member Board is chosen in two cycles, staggered by two years, with District 1, District 3, and District 5 being elected in presidential election years; and District 2 and District 4 are elected in the intervening years.

At the beginning of each new fiscal year, the Board conducts an annual organizational meeting held at a regular BOCC Meeting in November of each year, to elect a chairman and vice chairman to serve a one-year term. The authorities and responsibilities of the Board of County Commissioners include:

n Adopting ordinances and resolutions to establish public policy;

n Levying authorized taxes and fees;

n Adopting a budget each fiscal year;

n Appointing a chair and vice chair at the annual organizational meeting in November;

n Providing county services and infrastructure, including determining the amount and sources of funding for each;

n Appointing and supervising the county administrator and county attorney;

n Approving expenditures of county funds;

n Entering into contracts and agreements;

n Appointing individuals to serve on various boards and commissions established by state law, or by the Board of County Commissioners.

The new Seminole Brighton Bay Hotel & Casino Casino officially opened its doors at noon on Thursday, February 6, following a grand opening celebration for invited guests at 10 a.m.

The renowned rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd performed on Thursday, February 6 at 8 p.m.

cious bone-in ribeye. Exceptional steaks are grilled to perfection on a wood fire grill. Workforce Expands to More than 500 Team Members

The resort’s name, Seminole Brighton Bay Hotel & Casino, salutes popular sportfishing sites of nearby Lake Okeechobee, where Fisheating Bay is a little more than three miles from the new hotel and casino. Fisheating Bay and Fisheating Creek get their name from the Seminole name recorded on a military map of 1839, Thlothlopopka-Hatchee, translated as “the river where fish are eaten.”

EDUCATION IN OKEECHOBEE

Managing five elementary schools, two middle schools, one freshman campus and one regular high school, the Okeechobee County School District serves the majority of Okeechobee’s school-aged population. With an enrollment of more than 6,000 students, the district has experienced slow, steady growth throughout the modern era. The student-to-teacher ratio is 18:1, lower than the state average.

All district schools are housed in modern facilities or in completely renovated historic buildings. The district office is in the first brick school building (1916), and the Okeechobee Freshman Campus is housed in the original brick high school (1925). The district is currently in the construction phase of renovating the high school. For information on the district and enrollment requirements, call 863-4625000 or visit okeeschools.org.

Okeechobee County also offers four religiously affiliated private schools,

should parents and students seek a faithbased learning curriculum. One such institution, Okeechobee Christian Academy (OCA), has a 13:1 student-toteacher ratio. “Academies prepare students for academic success while emphasizing character, leadership and values,” said Melissa King, principal of OCA.

“We are a close-knit, family-like environment where students are nurtured in their faith, character and academic growth. OCA unashamedly teaches a biblical worldview in all subjects, integrating Christian principles into both academics and daily life. Also, we are the only fully accredited K5-12th-grade school in Okeechobee County.”

Graduates of OCA have gone on to achieve success locally and elsewhere, earning positions within the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Department, the state government of Virginia, and the halls of OCA itself.

Learners may also pursue a robust college education right here in

Okeechobee. The city is home to the Dixon Hendry Campus of Indian River State College (IRSC), a five-campus linchpin of education in Florida’s Treasure Coast. IRSC is a 2024 Florida Collegiate Purple Star Campus, recognized for its commitment to supporting military families, and it has been ranked one of the most affordable colleges in the U.S.

“Pursuing a degree at the Dixon Hendry Campus offers several distinct advantages that can enhance students’ academic and personal experiences,” said Campus Director Maria Johnson. “Smaller campuses typically have a lower student-to-faculty ratio, which allows for more personalized attention. Professors are more accessible for oneon-one meetings, office hours and discussions, which can enhance your learning experience. A smaller campus also fosters a strong sense of community. With fewer students, you will have more opportunities to connect with peers and build meaningful relationships. Additionally, at the Dixon Hendry Campus, we offer a more personal touch with our student services, such as counseling, career advising and academic support. With fewer students to manage, the staff is dedicated to meeting individual needs.”

Primarily focusing on Associate of Arts (AA) degrees while also supporting students in programs like the Associate of Science (AS), bachelor’s degrees and career training courses, IRSC’s Dixon Hendry Campus ensures its graduates are well prepared to enter the workforce. The college’s Career and Transfer Services department supports students and alumni in developing, evaluating and executing their career plans.

“Whether you’re seeking an ideal internship, preparing to land your dream job or exploring various career paths, Career and Transfer Services is the place to begin,” Johnson said. “The Career Services Center is dedicated to assisting with all aspects of career readiness. Available services include career assessments, career advising, resume writing, mock interviews, internships, job shadowing, career fairs, transfer services, coadvising with partner universities, graduate school events and job search strategies. These services are accessible online, in person or by phone.”

The Dixon Hendry Campus is at 2229 N.W. Ninth Ave., Okeechobee. For information on enrollment and more, call 863-824-6000 or visit irsc.edu.

HEALTH CARE

Thanks to Okeechobee’s wide array of doctor’s offices, specialty clinics, urgentcare centers and a distinguished hospital, the county’s medical professionals provide first-rate health care and general wellness to the community and its visitors. From pediatrics to end-of-life care, and from life-saving surgeries to dentistry to dermatology to cosmetics, our valued health care partners service a broad spectrum of patient needs.

At the center of Okeechobee County’s health care infrastructure is HCA Florida Raulerson Hospital, a linchpin in Southeast Florida that celebrated 45 years in 2024. Founded by HCA Healthcare in 1979, and named after one of the county’s pioneer families, Raulerson Hospital treats more than 30,000 ER patients annually in its 24-hour emergency room, including children. As a valued member of the HCA Florida Healthcare family, Raulerson is part of a 14-hospital network that employs 18,000 in East Florida.

Raulerson Hospital has access to cutting-edge technology and many resources through its affiliation with HCA Healthcare. Raulerson Hospital is a 100-bed, acute care facility, accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the Agency for Health Care Administration as a Primary Stroke Center.

In 2024, Raulerson Hospital earned the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for the seventh year in a row. It has earned accreditations for computed tomography (CT), mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine and ultrasound from the American College of Radiology. It also is a Five-Star Recipient for Diabetic Emergencies, Gallbladder Removal Surgery and Hip Fracture Treatment from Healthgrades. Patients at Raulerson Hospital enjoy a friendly atmosphere from a team of professionals who care like family.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE AN ANGLER’S PARADISE

Spanning 730 square miles, Lake Okeechobee is Florida’s largest lake and the secondlargest body of freshwater in the contiguous United States. Derived from the Seminole Indian words “Oki” (water) and “Chubi” (big), the lake has served as the namesake for the city of Okeechobee since its inception. As a multiple-use resource, it’s both a recreation magnet for locals and visitors, an indispensable asset for commercial and sport fisheries, and a reservoir for potable and irrigation water for much of South Florida. The lake, which is contained by the Herbert Hoover Dike, also provides flood control.

Commonly known as “Big O,” Lake Okeechobee is a sight to behold in any weather. Thanks to its balmy location, the Florida landmark stays holiday-ready all year round and is growing in popularity among savvy vacationers looking for an eclectic experience. There is something for everyone, on and off the lake.

For anglers, it is a world-class destination for fishing, earning the title of the Bass Fishing Capital of the World. Largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill and all kinds of native and exotic panfish swim in its waters, as well as the crappie species known as the speckled perch, a favorite catch that lends its name to an annual festival in Okeechobee each March. Whether it’s fishing off a pier or a boat in the Big O itself, or chartering an airboat to a more distant, otherwise inaccessible fishing spot, its stream beds, waterways and grassy coves providing unlimited choice for fishermen.

The lake is also beloved for its wildlife viewing. Wading and non-wading birds, including purple gallinules, sandhill cranes and crested caracaras—perhaps even the highly endangered Florida grasshopper sparrow—also take refuge in the enormous lake, alongside gators and manatees, while hogs and deer can be spotted around its perimeter.

Visitors who enjoy outdoor living also appreciate Lake Okeechobee and its surrounding areas. While the City of Okeechobee is just up the road, the region is full of secluded, nature-hugging campgrounds, RV parks and breathtaking hiking trails. These include the Chandler Slough trail, the Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) and the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, which encircles Big O for 110 miles. Hunting and sport shooting remain popular pastimes with regulars enjoying the unique sites on offer here.

REEL TIME

Looking for the best time to fish Lake O? Here’s what to anticipate depending on the season.

January through March is a popular time for tourists to visit Okeechobee. The mild winters of South Florida have most species thriving. Both bass and crappie are caught in the pre-spawn, spawn, and post-spawn stages this time of the year. Some of the best times to fish are three to four days before full moons and a few days before and after the new moon. Sudden spikes and/or dips in the temperature can temporarily cause fishing to slow down. If the water’s temperature cools too quickly, the fish may not feed as aggressively. This behavior usually only lasts a day or so. Try to fish just before a cold front and into the first day of the colder weather. Remember, water’s temperature cools slower than the atmosphere’s, so the first day of the cold front can still produce some good fishing.

Largemouth bass spawn this time of year, which means the bigger fish move into areas of shallow water. The fishing is on fire during these months, because the bass must feed before and after they spawn. The larger bass tend to spawn in areas out of the wind. The region between Kings Bar & Buckhead is called “The Pass.” This location is known to have spawning bass year after year. Other areas include the middle of Little Grassy, Kings Bar, and Tin House Cove.

Crappie fishing, a tourist and local favorite, is also extremely popular this time of year. The fun thing about crappie fishing is that it can be enjoyed day or night. For daytime fishing, crap-

pie can be caught inside the Kissimmee Grass using live minnows or jigs. Some good daytime crappie fishing holes are Little Grassy, Kings Bar, and Buckhead through Indian Prairie. Evening and nighttime crappie fishing is commonly done using a live minnow with a bobber, fishing 4 to 8 feet down; or without a bobber. Fishing in the dark can be particularly exciting in areas such as Government Cut, the Indian Prairie Canal or the mouth of the Kissimmee River.

There is a common misconception about bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee in the hotter months. Visitors and those unfamiliar with the fishery often ask if bass are catchable in the months of May-September. The answer is, yes, of course! The reason some question the summer bass harvest is largely due to Florida’s extreme summer temperatures. The solution is simple. Fish early. Beat the heat-fables by fishing the lake early in the morning, during the shad spawn. The early morning bite is often just as action-packed as it is in the winter months. Navigate between 2nd and 3rd Point and along Kings Bar. Once the sun breaks the horizon, it may be time to change your strategy. Try flipping reed clumps; this is where you can find the “scale tippers.” Areas that are productive in the warm afternoons are Little Grassy, the Henry Creek Lock and 3rd Point.

A summertime family-favorite is bluegill and shell cracker fishing. Why? Because it is fun for everyone. Novice anglers, veteran anglers and children alike have a blast catching panfish.

Bluegill and shell crackers tend to spawn in the summer months. While spawning, they can be caught off their beds, and often are visible from the boat. Some easy scouting for large beds can produce enough fish for a day’s limit. Depending on the moon, they can also be caught in the river, the rim canal and in the Harney Pond Canal. The most popular bait to use for catching bluegill and shell crackers are red worms and crickets. Some anglers even enjoy using a beetle spin tied onto an ultra-light rod.

Lake Okeechobee offers visitors a great deal of fun and recreation. Whether you are just passing through or staying a while, Lake Okeechobee is a must-see! If you don’t have access to a boat, there are several local fishing guides and tour guides available for hire. Local bait and tackle shops, such as Fast Break Bait & Tackle, are great places to seek tips and advice for fishing Lake Okeechobee. Every season brings new friends, new weather and new kinds of fishing.

Make Lake Okeechobee a destination in your travel plans, and take part in one of Okeechobee’s most treasured pastimes: fishing.

NATURE & THE OUTDOORS

For enthusiasts of the great outdoors, the ideal climate, stunning views and wide-open spaces of Okeechobee County are second to none. The county attracts tourists from around the world and locals from around the corner who enjoy its abundant recreational opportunities, from hiking and biking to hunting and sport shooting.

Okeechobee is literally a star-studded place. Because it is so far removed from urban and suburban light pollution, the county’s famed Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in 2016 became Florida’s first Dark Sky Park, as recognized by the International Dark Sky Association. The 54,000-acre state park is one of stargazers’ favorite spots in the Southeast, because it offers clear visibility of stars, planets and other celestial bodies in incomprehensible numbers and unforgettable brilliance—from the Milky Way to Jupiter and Saturn. You may be able to witness the International Space Station making its orbit around Earth, while rocket launches from the space centers on the East Coast are also viewable.

While the park closes 15 minutes after sunset, Florida State Parks annual passholders may gain after-hours access, and interested parties may also reserve an astronomy pad site from ReserveAmerica.com for night viewing. Kissimmee Prairie State Park is located at 33104 N.W. 192nd Ave., Okeechobee.

Okeechobee has always been an engaging destination for nature lovers. With its abundance of towering oak trees and cabbage hammocks, and, of course, Lake Okeechobee, the county is a convenient home for a myriad of species. Florida gators find refuge in Lake O and can often be spotted peeking from the water and sunning themselves on embankments. In fact, according to one census reported by NBC News, the lake boasts the largest concentration of alligators in the U.S., with two airboats counting 754 alligators in just three hours!

Okeechobee also includes four spots on the South Florida Birding Trail, so sightseeing with binoculars is a plus. Whether wading in the county’s many waters or keeping watch in its tall trees, the wide variety of avian life includes the statuesque great blue heron and caracara, regal eagles, the night crown heron and the elegant snowy egret. Flocks of pelicans may be spotted converging on Lake Okeechobee. The best spot for birding, according to Paul Gray, science coordinator for Audubon Florida’s Everglades Restoration Program, is the Clif Betts Recreation Area at Lock 7, where spectators can observe sunset flights of birds heading to roost on Eagle Bay Island.

Other great official birding spots include Okee-Tantie Recreation Area and the Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area. With its lush diversity of habitats, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, Florida’s largest state park, welcomes more than 150 avian species.

NATURE & THE OUTDOORS

One great way to maximize wildlife viewing is to ride an airboat with one of Okeechobee’s talented and knowledgeable captains. This popular option for locals and ecotourists provides a chance to see alligators and birds up close, the pleasant breezes whipping your hair.

Runners and bicyclists eager to get “L.O.S.T.” on the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail can start at entry points at the aforementioned Clif Betts Jr. Lakeside Recreation Area or Nubbins Slough, while Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area offers its own three-mile hiking, biking and running trail.

Okeechobee is also an official Gateway Community for the Florida Trail, a congressionally designated National Scenic Trail that spans all the way from Southern Florida through the

Panhandle. Lake Okeechobee is central to the southern portion of the Florida Trail, whose diverse habitats include sawgrass prairies, hardwood hammocks and dwarf cypress swamps, while allowing for the exploration of the historic cattle country of Okeechobee and its surrounding counties.

Locals and visitors alike enjoy hiking and cycling through the Trail, tackling a part, or even the entire, 1,500mile route. As a Gateway Community, Okeechobee provides accommodations, restaurants, grocers and supplies for participating hikers. It is just one of 16 such communities conveniently

located along this impressive route.

From archery to golf, tennis to volleyball, swimming to baseball, Okeechobee’s parks and businesses can satisfy any sportsman’s yin.

TARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

he cows have come home to Flagler Park! In 2022, Cattleman’s Square, a massive project initiated by Okeechobee Main Street, opened to the public. This immersive, 10-piece sculpture project transports visitors to a classic cattle ranch, with informational kiosks exploring each individual work. The sculptures are the work of renowned artist J. Michael Wilson, known nationwide for his realistic, accurately scaled bronzes.

The project is designed to capture the movement of the herding experience, and visitors are encouraged to walk among the metal beasts and their riders, taking pictures with them and enjoying this tribute to Okeechobee’s rich and ongoing history in agribusiness. Strategically placed lighting fixtures allow for nighttime viewing as well.

“My hope for this project and Okeechobee is to leave a lasting reminder of the importance provided by local cattle owners and breeders from the last 500 years—a rare breed of community, integrity and pride,” Wilson said. “As the world is rapidly changing, it’s important to know our roots. I believe it’s important to have a hands-on approach to fine art with access available to all.” Join the “cattle drive” by visiting Flagler Park.

The project joins other prominent public artworks in Okeechobee. Thanks to the city’s Mural Program, Okeechobee’s culture and history are on vibrant display in wall-sized paintings coloring the downtown landscape with images of cattle drives, life on the ranch, the Native American population, and the county’s first telephone company and hardware store, among others. The eight-part Butterfly Sculpture Project, taking wing in Flagler Park, showcases the work of local artists and students all displaying the individual style on a common medium: large metal butterfly. These make for popular and colorful photo ops.

The visual arts can also be enjoyed indoors at the Arts & Culture Alliance Art Gallery. Okeechobee’s first-ever arts center, the gallery houses more than 100 works of art in a variety of mediums, alongside art classes and a gift shop, with both local and national artists represented.

Okeechobee is also a haven for live performances. For more than 40 years, Okeechobee Community Theatre has been bringing quality plays and musicals to a diverse audience from its home base in the historic Okeechobee Auditorium, 610 S.W. Second Ave. Additionally, the Yee-haw Music Festival celebrates the best in country and bluegrass music for three days each January.

For first-rate entertainment year-round in Okeechobee, the new, 38,000-square-foot Seminole Brighton Bay Hotel & Casino includes space for 640 slot machines and 18 tables for blackjack, craps, roulette and other house-banked card games. Included is a smoke-free gaming space with 104 slot machines and a high-limit gaming area with 42 slot machines and four table games. The complex also features an indoor event space with 400 seats for banquet events or bingo games, or 900 seats set up as a performance hall, as well as a 10-lane bowling alley (Brighton Bay Bowling) of 7,044 square feet, a first for any Seminole Casino.

ABOUT OUR CHAMBER

Unveiling the Business Development Board of Okeechobee County: More Than Just a Chamber

Behind the scenes of Okeechobee County’s thriving business community lies the powerhouse known officially as the Business Development Board, affectionately known as the Chamber. This not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization is a voluntary force driven by a singular purpose—to unite business professionals and spearhead civic and economic progress in the community.

At the heart of its mission is translating collaborative thinking into action, connecting businesses and the community for mutual success and prosperity. Serving as a spokesperson for its members, the Chamber plays a pivotal role in fostering a robust economic climate, making businesses stronger and the community more vibrant.

Education is a cornerstone of the Chamber’s strategy, offering programs and seminars covering a spectrum of topics, from social media and Google My Business to QuickBooks training and Small Business Administration (SBA) insights. The goal is to empower businesses with the knowledge to market, sell, and engage effectively.

Networking is equally vital, and the Chamber provides ample opportunities through events like the Rise-Up Breakfast, Business After Hours, Quarterly Business Exchange Luncheons, and Speed Networking events. These gatherings not only facilitate professional connections but also contribute to building a tightknit Okeechobee community where local businesses can thrive.

In addition to educational and networking initiatives, the Chamber offers services such as Grand Opening and Milestone anniversary event planning for its members, further solidifying its role as a supporter of local businesses.

The Chamber’s mission, “Connecting business and community for economic success and prosperity,” comes to life through initiatives like the Shop Small campaign, a local rendition of Small Business Saturday in partnership with American Express. This annual event underscores the importance of supporting local businesses.

Another standout community offering is the Leadership Okeechobee Program, a nine-month leadership development course tailored to Okeechobee. Participants delve into the inner workings of key industries, engage in mock scenarios, execute community projects, and operate as a nonprofit organization, fostering leadership skills and community engagement.

Strength lies in numbers and diversity for the Chamber. With representation from large and small businesses across various professions, the Chamber’s influence grows, enhancing its ability to champion the needs of the local business community. The members aren’t just participants; they are the Chamber, collectively accomplishing what no single business could achieve alone. The Business Development Board of Okeechobee County is more than a Chamber—it’s a driving force behind community growth and economic prosperity.
