About the Peruvian Horse THE PERUVIAN HORSE Webster’s dictionary defines “luxury” as “the use and enjoyment of the best, most precious things that offer the most physical comfort and satisfaction.” Luxury may be the single best word in the English language to describe the Peruvian Horse. There is something for everyone in this elegant animal: smooth riding comfort, high energy, strength, stamina, intelligence, a tractable disposition, animated, flashy presence and 100% natural action which sets the Peruvian apart from others.

A BREED APART The Peruvian Horse transmits its unique smooth gait to its purebred foals. No artificial devices or special training aids are necessary to enable the horse to perform its specialty – a natural four-beat footfall of medium speed that provides a ride of incomparable smoothness and harmony of movement along with the utmost ground covering ability within one sequence of footfalls. This signature gait is called “paso llano,” and it is 100% unique to the Peruvian Horse.

FLAIR AND ELEGANCE In addition to an easy gait, the Peruvian Horse has a brilliant front action movement typified by the upward lifting of the front legs combined with “termino”, an outward movement of the front legs similar to the loose rolling of a swimmer’s arms doing the crawl. Lift and termino are 100% natural, fluid, effortless and well integrated within the gait sequence. Of all of the traits that distinguish the Peruvian Horse, his tremendous “brio” is perhaps the most prized by both expert and novice horse people alike. Brio is an inherent quality of a noble and willing spirit that enables this tractable horse to perform with an exuberance that can only be described as thrilling. Brio gives the Peruvian Horse its willingness and ability to perform tirelessly for many hours in the service of his rider.

A VERSATILE HORSE The Peruvian Horse is the world’s greatest riding horse. Smooth to ride, beautiful to behold and incredible brio – all traits that enable it to serve its rider in style. The Peruvian is more than a show horse. He was bred and raised to work hard and provide smooth reliable transportation. Peruvian Horses excel in many aspects of pleasure riding: trail, CTR, team penning, sidesaddle, drill teams, musical exercise, showing.

CONFORMATION AND APPEARANCE Physically, the Peruvian Horse is a horse of medium size and with refinement. Ideal height is between 14 and 15 hands tall, with good balance and almost even ratios of girth, leg and back. He may be any color. The coat and skin are refined and the mane is long and abundant with fine, lustrous hair. Bone is refined but dense; in all aspects overall refinement, grace and elegance is desired. Stallions exhibit the powerful arched neck and crest of their Iberian ancestors. Peruvian Horse breeders pay scrupulous attention to genetics, with the three primary qualities being gait, soundness and disposition.

TACK OF THE PERUVIAN HORSE The traditional tack of the Peruvian Horse has remained true to his heritage, but they may be ridden in any type of tack that fits properly. The headgear, saddle, stirrups and “guarniciones” (tailgear) used today in shows are the traditional equipment imported from Peru where it has evolved over hundreds of years. Although

many people choose to show their horses in traditional tack, any style may be used. And of course, on

the trail anything goes!

About the Judges: Bill Clattenburg - Performance division

Bill Clattenburg is a NAPHA carded judge and a retired Civil Engineer. He owns and operates Clattenburg Peruvian Ranch located in Montpelier, Louisiana.

Bill has been breeding, training, and showing Peruvian Horses since 1995. He previously had a herd of more than 40 Peruvian horses but currently has a herd of about 25 horses. His Peruvian horses have been awarded National Championships, as well as, many regional Champion of Champions titles.

Renzo Crolle Claux - Breeding Division

Renzo is a business manager, graduated from the Universidad del Pacifico in Lima, Peru. He has business dedicated to metal fabrication and producing balanced feed for animals..

Renzo has been a carded judge for the ANCPCPP since September 2008, and has judged over 100 shows around the world. He has judged in all areas of Peru, as well as regional and national shows in many countries including Argentina, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua y USA. He judged the Peru national show 5 times during 2011 -2016, and is currently the president of the judges committee of the ANCPCPP.

About the Cover Horse

In Memoriam

Barbara Goetz Windom 1934 - 2017 Barbara grew up loving and riding horses. It was in her blood. Her grandfather, MGM founder and studio head Louis “E.B.” Mayer, and parents William and Edith Goetz owned champion thoroughbreds such as Kelso and Preakness winner Royal Orbit.

She was age one the first time she ever sat in a saddle. She never really got out of it.

Her family hoped horses would distract her from her Hollywood upbringing. She took jumping lessons alongside Elizabeth Taylor as the actress prepped for her role in National Velvet. Throughout her youth Barbara rode jumpers and competed as far away as Madison Square Garden in New York. When she eloped at 19, her parents sold all her horses.

With her first husband Tod Clare, Barbara worked and raised daughters Maggie and Debora. During her second brief marriage to the late actor William Windom (daughter, Rachel), she began to build her 30-year career as an interior designer. Barbara also launched a successful catering business that specialized in high-end paté and flourless chocolate cakes she and her partner Diane Worthington made in bulk from her kitchen, all while working full time as one of the most successful and well-respected interior designers in Los Angeles.

Once her children were grown, Barbara and partner Victor di Suvero left California for New Mexico in 1989. It was near Santa Fe where Barbara rode her first Peruvian horse. The day she met artist Linda Strong, the pair left a pool party to go ride. After a lengthy trail ride, Barbara bought her first Peruvian. She claimed she only wanted one. She was soon up to four, which required her to move. She found her dream property along the banks of the Rio Grande on what was part of the historic Santa Fe Trail. That’s where she built La Estancia Alegre and began a breeding program with Master Chalán Roberto Quijandría that would eventually produce more than 150 horses. Many of them have been some of the most successful show horses in the United States: *LEA Conquistador+, *LEA Poema++ (more about Poema on page 24), LEA Poesia+, LEA Victoria+ and LEA El Poeta+ (see page 25).

Barbara still rode regularly up until the time she passed. At the age of 82 she’d lead friends on full-day trail rides on her champion show horses through New Mexico’s rugged mountains. Just days before a sudden illness claimed her, she was riding around the ranch and preparing for that week’s show. She died on May 27 in Duncan, Oklahoma, while attending the Sooner State and Camino Real/Lone Star double show. Her horses won champion of champions in Breeding and Performance. Several are competing at this year’s U.S. National Show — please stop by the La Estancia Alegre aisle to see them and share your memories of Barbara. We deeply appreciate the support of Barbara’s extended family in the Peruvian community who’ve shared their condolences and offered wonderful homes for Barbara’s beloved horses.

In Memoriam

*LEA Poema++ 1996 - 2017 *LEA Poema++ (JM Prodigio x HNS Laura I) is one of the most successful Peruvian show horses to ever glide through an arena. If you scroll down her record in the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation, you’ll see she was many times laureada in Breeding and Performance divisions at regional and national shows.

She was one of the first horses bred by Barbara Windom, owner of La Estancia Alegre and amateur rider who was determined to produce sane, strong, sound horses. She was Barbara’s favorite horse of all time, one who’d nicker every time she saw her owner headed her way with a halter.

She’d run like hell from anyone else.

After her show career, Poema produced LEA Poesía+.

This Domecq daughter’s show record is almost as impressive as her mother’s. Like Poema, Poesía won in Gait, Performance, and Breeding. (Poesía is the mother of LEA Victoria+, another winner across all three divisions.)

Poema also produced Medallón de Bronce winner LEA El Poeta+, currently one of the top performance horses in the U.S. who also wins in Gait and Breeding.

Shortly before Barbara’s unexpected death May 27, 2017, she was still riding the 21-year-old mare. But just after Barbara passed, Poema took a dramatic downturn.

She became lethargic and lost interest in food. She died peacefully on July 3, 2017, and the La Estancia Alegre family mourned her passing as they continue to grieve for her owner.
