38 years Marking

on Hilton Head Store Owner Andrea Bragg Andrea@ForsytheJewelers.biz

Celebrating 38 years in 2019, Forsythe Jewelers continues to bring the world’s best designer jewelry and gifts to Hilton Head. Carrying the most popular designer brands, this family-owned business provides an unhurried, small-town shopping experience to every customer who enters the store. Over the past three decades, the store has established itself as an island landmark and its name is synonymous with shopping on Hilton Head. In fact, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce recently named Forsythe as its “Small Business of the Year.” Storeowner Andrea Bragg keeps Forsythe on-trend by traveling the world to meet personally with designers and see firsthand where and how the items she chooses for the showcases are made. As a member of The American Gem Society, Forsythe takes pride in being part of a small percentage of jewelry stores in the world dedicated to high standards of professional ethics and education. For many locals, Forsythe is their “neighborhood” jewelry store where they are warmly greeted by name. For first-time visitors, the shop is the perfect backdrop for choosing a gift to remember their Hilton Head vacation. For returning visitors, shopping at Forsythe is as much a part of their vacation as an evening bike ride or walk on the beach…it’s an event they’ve been anticipating since their last trip to the island. Forsythe allows customers to slow down and shop at a pace that only a vacation can provide…no rushing or compromising; they’re now on “island” time.

Sparkling!

We Want to Keep You

Cleaning your jewelry is important...but the process can seem daunting. Fear not! We turned to the jewelry cleaning experts at The Kingswood Company to simply tell us “what not to do.”

Where Old Wives Went Wrong If you tend to use your mother’s or grandmother’s tricks of the cleaning trade, we have a few warnings regarding “old wives’ tales.” What tricks should you watch out for? Toothbrush and Toothpaste | They are great for your pearly whites, but not your pearls or really any other type of jewelry. The abrasives in toothpaste can scratch the surface of metals and softer gemstones, while a toothbrush’s long handle allows you to place too much pressure on the piece you are cleaning. Ammonia and Mr. Clean | Ammonia, denatured alcohol, acetone and other harsh cleaning agents can dull or pit the surface of softer gemstones. While ammonia or a cleaning agent like Mr. Clean can be effective in small concentrations, it is difficult to determine the correct ratio, which makes them a risky choice. Bleach | Bleach is not safe for cleaning jewelry. It can cause gold and other metal alloys to break down, irreparably damaging the piece. In fact, that is why it’s not a good idea to wear your jewelry while swimming or in a hot tub, because of the chlorine used to keep them clean.

Boiling Water | While steam is an excellent way to clean jewelry (most jewelers use a steamer), placing your jewelry in a pot of boiling water is not a good idea. Your piece will come into contact with a hot metal surface, which can weaken or misshape the metal. Lemon Juice | Lemon juice is too acidic and abrasive to safely clean jewelry, especially softer stones and silver. Vinegar | The old wives are big fans of vinegar, and it is a great cleaning agent for many things, just not jewelry. Like lemon juice, it is too acidic, which is damaging to softer stones and to metal. Baking Soda | Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is too alkaline and can damage your jewelry. Just as acidic substances can be damaging, so can those that are alkaline. We Want to Keep you Sparkling! If you’re still unsure please bring your jewelry to Forsythe Jewelers (whether you bought it from us or not) and we’ll give it a complimentary “spa treatment” and prong check - no need to make an appointment! 5

What Relaxed Luxury Means to Forsythe Jewelers By Mary Hall First Featured in Hilton Head Monthly November 2018 For over 38 years, Forsythe Jewelers has been refining the term “relaxed luxury.” It’s a phrase that doesn’t seem, at first, to make a lot of sense — but those who have experienced the world-class designer jewelry and service offered at Forsythe know that the term perfectly describes the store’s core. “Relaxed luxury at Forsythe means offering jewelry made of the highest quality and best craftsmanship, coupled with unmatched customer service in an environment void of pressure,” said Forsythe owner Andrea Bragg. “We’re relaxed, we’re on an island, yet our selection of jewelry and our level of customer service rivals any big-city, extravagant shop.” The natural colors and light throughout the store, located in The Shops at Sea Pines Center, are in keeping with the Hilton Head Island environment and create a warm, gracious atmosphere that works its charm on all. Far from being intimidating or “scary,” Forsythe welcomes shoppers to take their time and try on jewelry while talking with the knowledgeable staff. 6

“Our store is not a museum; we’ve removed the stigma,” Bragg said. “We want people to feel welcome to look and try on. One thing we enjoy doing is styling our clients. We love to help people pick out something that will enhance their lifestyle, whether it’s to play bridge or golf, have dinner at Truffles or go to the theater. We listen to what our clients need and serve them to our best ability.” Listening to customers is key and helps Forsythe’s staff to pick the perfect pieces for their clients. The team stays up-to-date on new styles and materials, and they’re always happy to place special orders for clients. New products come in every week and are displayed in cases that showcase the craftsmanship and design. And Bragg goes to top jewelry shows every year, meeting with designers to stay abreast of current trends. The shop carries styles from some of the top designers in the world: Roberto Coin, David Yurman, John Hardy, Marco Bicego, Lagos, Gabriel & Co. and Gurhan, for example; all pieces that are perfect for both an island lifestyle and a big-city adventure. Many visitors return again and again over the years. For example, Bragg points to one family with three generations of happy Forsythe clients. The family comes into the shop every year to purchase jewelry, ending each visit by taking a photo of the granddaughters in the store. The photos create visual mementos of the family’s growth through the years. “We are truly blessed,” Bragg said. After Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Forsythe sent an email to clients as an update on conditions on Hilton Head and how the store had fared. She said she received a great response from clients all over the country who were thinking about their neighborhood jeweler during the crisis. “Being warm and welcoming is who we are; it represents our business philosophy,” Bragg said. “We offer a no-pressure, fun environment where our customers can be on ‘island time.’ We even have people who ride up to our store on their bikes and come in to have a look. We enjoy being part of this community and developing relationships with people. We take great pride in seeing people wear our jewelry. Our clients are our Forsythe family.” 7

Fashion is changeable. It is whimsical. Style is not. Style is part of us, of our life, in every moment and every expression. —Roberto Coin

TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP Roberto Coin was born in the city of Vicenza. Like a woman’s beauty magnified by jewels, this magical place is also called the City of Gold, a source of infinite design inspirations and ancestral know-how. Taste and experimentation turn each creation into an unedited example of style and innovation that soon catches the attention of the jewelry world, placing the brand among the most renowned Italian jewelers and at the top of international studies on creativity and quality. Each piece, by Roberto Coin, is the result of a thorough process, a journey among different cultures and multi-ethnic influences, through the world of nature, between echoes of the past and future projections. The capability to transfer the most varied experiences, dreams and perspectives into the jewels, characterizes the brand’s collections with an unmistakable mark of identity and uniqueness.

THE RUBY Roberto Coin signs each one of his pieces with a small ruby casted inside the jewel, in direct contact with the skin of who wears it. This magical signature, surrounded by an antique halo of legend, represents the message of good wishes that Roberto Coin dedicates to his passionate clientele. The world of fashion recognizes Roberto Coin as the author of many of the most interesting trends in the jewelry world over the last decades. His tireless instinct to always bring something inedited to life pushes him to create over 600 new models a year, which satisfy the needs of the most diverse international markets. Many creations are chosen each year by fashion celebrities and movie stars to accompany them on the most popular and prestigious red carpets. 8

How to Stack Rings

More is more when it comes to stacking rings! Today’s designs lend themselves to easily combining different ring styles from different designers. In fact, some rings are made with multiple bands already “stacked” together to create an “insta-stack!” How easy is that?

Here are a few of our favorite tips to get you started in stacking…

Build a stack around your favorite ring Sometimes it’s nice to choose an “anchor” ring that you can build a stack around. This is an easy way to give new life to an engagement ring. Just add one or two bands on each side of the stone and watch your traditional design transform into a trendsetting statement.

16

Different Styles, Metals, Widths…You Choose! Stacking different textures and designs is an easy way to create a unique and creative look on your hand. The more interesting the band design, the better! Alternating from a smoothed edge to a jagged edge or a thick width to a slim width.

How many is too many? The sky, or your finger length as it may be, is the limit! Obviously you’ll be able to stack more rings that have thinner bands, rather than those with thicker bands; however, as long as you’re comfortable, the quantity is up to you! Remember, if you’re confident with your choices the jewelry will shine even brighter!

It was more than 20 years ago that Gurhan first experienced the beauty of 24K gold. Captivated by its depth, warmth and sensuality, the designer was inspired to build an entire brand around this precious metal. With his usual passion and determination Gurhan studied the techniques of ancient goldsmiths and then refined them into designs for today’s woman. In fact, Gurhan is widely recognized for pioneering the revival of 24K gold and reintroducing it into the modern fine jewelry market. Over the years the brand expanded and also offers collections in sterling silver, all with the signature hand-hammered finish that is instantly recognizable. Devoted to his design, Gurhan continues to oversee the company’s factory workshop in Istanbul where each artisan is chosen and individually trained by Gurhan himself. With this passion and dedication, Gurhan often refers to his jewelry as “heartmade”. In fact, Gurhan can often be found at his workbench, envisioning his next new collection or putting the finishing touches on a One-of-a-Kind design. It is this intimate connection with his craft and unwavering commitment to quality that has made GURHAN an internationally recognized brand. GURHAN is a favorite among celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Sandra Bullock and has received numerous awards and accolades … he was even commissioned to create an entire collection for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The company is currently headquartered in New York City where Gurhan oversees operations along with his wife Fiona Tilley who is President and CEO.

Retailer Roundtable at the MacKenzie-Childs Farm

In November 2018, Forsythe Jewelers’ owner, Andrea Bragg, was one of only a handful of retail partners invited to the MacKenzie-Childs farm and headquarters located in Aurora, New York for a “Retailer Roundtable”. Andrea spent two snowy days with fellow small business owners to share and learn about the role MacKenzie-Childs plays in their stores. “I was so inspired by the people I met,” explained Andrea. “It was a roundtable discussion at its truest…we shared ideas, helped each other and ultimately got reenergized about the future of this very special brand!” Andrea also spent time touring the working farm and production studio with Rebecca Proctor, Creative Director, who, along with her team, is responsible for coming up new designs each and every season. Rebecca even shared her inspirations for new collections, where she sources certain materials from, and how her ideas are developed from start to finish. Although it was a magical trip to Upstate New York, Andrea admitted that she was happy to return to her island home.

The Forsythe Jewelers and MacKenzie-Childs Partnership Forsythe Jewelers has carried the MacKenzie-Childs brand for over 30 years and is one of only a select number of retailers to hold that distinction. Owner Andrea Bragg continually fills the store with the newest pieces for our loyal MacKenzie-Childs collectors to enjoy as well as for the visitors who may be experiencing the brand for the first time. 33
