A Word from the Directors
Welcome to the very first musical from Pascack Theatre, with the students of Pascack Valley and Pascack Hills working together on stage and behind the scenes. As we prepare to bring our operations to the newly-renovated Pascack Hills auditorium for the 2025-26 school year, and renovations at Pascack Valley get underway, we celebrate the blending of two theatre programs into one unified company. As we hoped it would, this merger has expanded its participants’ opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and storytelling.
Theatre is, at its heart, a collective effort, and this show is a testament to the dedication of both schools’ students, staff, and community. We could not be more grateful to every family member, teacher, custodian, school administrator, business owner, and friend who has supported our efforts. From the cast and pit band auditions to the final curtain call, the students and professional staff have poured passion, persistence, and plenty of laughter into every step of the process. We are so proud of what this company has built and can’t wait to see it continue to thrive.
How fitting that our first musical is one from which we can derive so much inspiration. Of course, we love showing up to work each day on a fun, high-energy show with a terrific score and a fast-paced, well-structured book. The stage adaptation brilliantly transforms the spirit of the beloved film into something even more dynamic, using music and movement to amplify Elle’s evolution from underestimated sorority girl to unstoppable force. However, Elle Woods’ story also has much to offer us as we reflect on the journey of Pascack Theatre so far. When we meet Elle, she thinks she knows what her future looks like. When suddenly she must find a new path forward, her broken heart heals on a journey of self-discovery that brings her new places with new friends and new challenges. By staying true to what matters most to her and embracing her unique strengths, Elle realizes that the possibilities for what’s coming next are beyond anything she’d dreamed of before.
Life doesn’t always unfold the way we expect. Hearts get broken and dreams have to change. But not everyone or everything is what it appears to be at first glance, and hard work, determination, and a little help from your friends goes a long way toward building a future you can be proud of. Whether you’re here for the humor, the heart, or simply to enjoy a fantastic night of theatre, we hope this production leaves you feeling inspired to take on whatever challenges come your way with confidence, kindness, and a little bit of Elle Woods’ signature flair.

The Directors
Merielle Lupfer (Director/ CHAMP Crew Supervisor) is a 2001 alumna of PVHS who holds a degree in Educational Theatre from New York University. She spends the school day teaching fifth-grade Language Arts at George G. White Middle School in Hillsdale. Returning to helm the high school theatre program that was her initial training ground in performance and design, and doing it alongside her husband/favorite collaborator, has been a dream come true for the past 18 years. Though she sometimes jokes that her work is mostly “doing skits with kids,” Merielle believes strongly in the importance of the arts in students’ lives and is grateful for the privilege of creating art with young people for a living. Among the parts she’s enjoyed playing on stage are Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Amy in Company, but Merielle’s favorite role is Mama to her twin daughters. Now ten years old and in fifth grade, they love reading, making music, being with family, and working on Pascack Theatre shows as official members of the CHAMP crew.

Tom Lupfer (Director/ Producer) directed the Pascack Valley HS Theatre program from 20072024, and is thrilled to take on the challenge of a combined Pascack Theatre program! In June 2024, he was named northjersey.com’s Amazing Teacher of the Month, sponsored by northjersey.com and njschooljobs.com. This award honors New Jersey teachers nominated by their students. He loves collaborating with his wife Merielle, with whom he shared the 2022 MSU Foxy Award for Best Direction of a Musical. It brings Tom great joy that his ten-year-old twin daughters love going to rehearsal almost as much as he does. MA: Educational Theatre, NYU; Educational Leadership, Montclair State. BA: Theatre, Susquehanna University

The Creatives
Heather Hach (Book) is a screenwriter (Freaky Friday and What to Expect When You’re Expecting) and Tony-nominated and Olivier-winning Broadway librettist (Legally Blonde the Musical). A graduate of the University of Colorado School of Journalism, Hach went on to become a magazine editor, an improv comedy troupe member and, even weirder yet, a judge on MTV’s “The Search for the Next Elle Woods”. She was a mediocre P.A. on TV’s “Caroline in the City” and a truly terrible writer’s assistant on “Dilbert.” Thankfully, in 1999, she won the Walt Disney Screenwriting Fellowship and has been writing ever since. She also wrote the YA novel Freaky Monday with Mary Rodgers. The Trouble with Drowning is her adult novel debut. Hach lives in Manhattan Beach with her husband, two kids, a charming golden doodle and a weird pug.
Laurence O’Keefe (Music and Lyrics) won the Ed Kleban, ASCAP Richard Rodgers New Horizons and Jonathan Larson Awards for his music and lyrics. Off-Broadway credits: Bat Boy: The Musical (Lucille Lortel, Richard Rodgers, Outer Critics Circle Awards), music for Sarah, Plain and Tall, Heathers the Musical and The Mice.
Nell Benjamin (Music and Lyrics) adapted The Pirates of Penzance for Goodspeed Opera House, wrote Cam Jansen with Laurence O’Keefe, wrote Mean Girls with Jeff Richmond and Tina Fey, and is a member of ASCAP and the Dramatists Guide of America.

Bravo, Laila!

From center stage to the sound booth, you've given your all to every production over the past four years, and we couldn't be prouder. Whether you were lighting up the stage in 9 to 5, Pride and Prejudice, Mama Mia!, Cinderella, and now Legally Blonde, or working your magic behind the scenes for She Kills Monsters and When This Is Over, you've embraced every role with passion, dedication, and heart.
In your seventh and final show at PVRSHD, you shine once again as the Judge and a cherished member of the ensemble. It's been such a joy to watch your journey in the theatre, and we can't wait to see how you bring that same creativity and spirit to everything you do next.
We can't wait to see what amazing things you do next—but for now, you better bend and snap your way into one unforgettable performance!
With Love, Mom, Dad, Brian, Grandma, Grandpa, Kody, and Marty
