Welcome to your Pasadena POPS at the magnificent Los Angeles County Arboretum!
Welcome to the Pasadena POPS Rusnak Summer Concert Series! I am thrilled to share with you an incredible season of music that Michael Feinstein has planned for us all. From jazz legends and iconic composers to Grammy and Tony-winning performers, this is a rare chance to experience orchestral music performed at a breathtaking outdoor venue with your friends and family. Bringing people together to appreciate the good things in life is what summer is all about.
Michael has curated a season to delight your senses with the music of the Great American Songbook, a wide-ranging collection that defines the soundtrack of our lives and stands the test of time. You will of course hear treasured favorites from Duke Ellington, Sinatra and Tony Bennett, but what makes this experience unique is Michael’s gift of taking you on an insider’s journey through the stories that made the music, shared as though we are all gathered around his living room piano.
This summer you’ll also enjoy a tribute to ABBA that will have you dancing in the aisles, and crowd-favorite Michael Cavanaugh returns with the music of Paul Simon, James Taylor and Neil Diamond for a night of sing-along hits.
As my first POPS season as CEO, the joy our music brings to audiences of all ages makes me excited for the future of symphony orchestras. We welcome our guests attending this concert through our Student Access Program, which annually provides more than 3,000 young people and their families the opportunity to attend a Pasadena Symphony and POPS concert at no cost. Our commitment to arts education and the community runs deep, with our Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestras having grown by an astounding 50% over the past two years, serving close to 800 young musicians in the San Gabriel Valley. And we just launched our first-ever Summer Camp in June!
Thank you for supporting this organization and for making the Pasadena POPS part of your summer. I look forward to getting to know more of you throughout the season, but in the meantime, indulge in a culinary treat, have another sip of wine, bask in the beautiful surroundings, and most of all — have fun!
Andrew Brown CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER PASADENA SYMPHONY AND POPS
BEHIND THE MUSICAL CURTAIN an interview with MICHAEL FEINSTEIN
You open the season with the legacy of music that came out of the Harlem Renaissance on the occasion of Duke Ellington’s 125th birthday. Can you talk about how the orchestra will pay tribute to Ellington’s legacy?
The Harlem Renaissance is a very rich part of American cultural history that is incredibly musically significant.
Duke Ellington, who was originally from Washington, D.C., started his career in Harlem with a band called the Harlem Footwarmers and slowly evolved into the lifeblood of American music. His iconic Cotton Club Orchestra played at the Cotton Club for a number of years, while he was at the same time writing iconic songs like “It Don’t Mean a Thing, If It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “I Got It Bad and It Ain’t Good,” “Sophisticated Lady,” and the list goes on. He also expanded to write symphonic compositions, and experimented with every musical form you can imagine, elevating each of those art forms, and bringing us all with him.
So it is no small feat to pay tribute to Duke Ellington because he encompasses so many different aspects of the American musical experience, but we’re excited to do it. In the bones of the orchestra is a wonderful big band, so we’ll be featuring the Big
Band sound that Ellington pioneered, as well as some of his more lush compositions. The string section will also be featured and will accompany Catherine Russell and Byron Stripling’s performances. One of the fun things about working with an orchestra as versatile as the Pasadena POPS is that we have the opportunity to play many different musical styles - the Big Band sound, the symphonic sound, the sound of strings, and the sound of a smaller combo, all encompassed in a world-class symphony.
What do you think it is about Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra’s music that makes it so enduring?
When I think of the great male singers of the 20th and 21st centuries, inevitably the first names that come to mind are Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. They were very good friends. They were both Italian-Americans and had extraordinary voices that had the ability to make us feel
MICHAEL FEINSTEIN, dubbed “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook” for preserving, presenting and interpreting that seminal body of work, leads the Pasadena POPS as Principal Pops Conductor. He is also founder of The Great American Songbook Foundation and serves on the Library of Congress’ National Recording Preservation Board, an organization dedicated to ensuring the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America’s sound recording heritage.
“One of the fun things about working with an orchestra as versatile as the Pasadena POPS is that we have the opportunity to play many different musical styles — the Big Band sound, the symphonic sound, the sound of strings, and the sound of a smaller combo, all encompassed in a world-class symphony.”
every word and syllable they sang very deeply. They addressed social issues through the music and lyrics they gave us, and they were also wildly entertaining. They could both take songs written in the 20s, 30s and 40s, and reinvent them with a swing sound.
Sinatra in particular revitalized and reinvented the way American popular standards were sung when he started collaborating with Nelson Riddle in the early 1950s. Tony Bennett was really, in his own words, a jazz singer first who became a very successful pop singer. To sing Tony Bennett songs authentically, one has to have a certain sense of the jazz idiom, and yet his focus was always on the lyrics and telling a story. Both of these men were great storytellers and great entertainers, and I’m looking forward to exploring their legacy with you.
Can you tell us some stories about times spent with Tony Bennett?
I’d met Tony here in California, but when I first started spending time in New York, he took me out on the town, which was quite a heady experience. He took me to different clubs to hear different singers and pianists, and it was so fun to watch him listen to these artists and to experience the joy of him sharing them with me.
I was very touched by that, and the next day he sent a package to my hotel of throat lozenges that one could only buy in the United Kingdom. He swore by those lozenges and made a special point of sending them to me. I have never forgotten that expressions of kindness, especially when I was just an up-and-comer who was trying to find my way. The kindness of Tony is something that I think comes through in his music, and I will always remember his friendship and his desire to help a young, sort of struggling singer.
And Sinatra…
When people think about Frank Sinatra, in addition to his incredible musicianship and great voice, they might think about his volatility. He was known for being a very passionate guy, and that passion comes through in his music. With me, he was always very kind and accepting, I think because I spoke his musical language. I wasn’t interested in the tabloid aspects of his life. I just wanted to know about what made him who he is and we talked about things that were music-centric.
He told me about his early days going to nightclubs and hearing singers like Billie Holiday and Mabel Mercer, who had a great effect on his ability to interpret. Mabel Mercer, who did not have a particularly good voice, was one of the singers who helped him learn how to interpret a lyric. She would go from table to table and literally sit down at each table and sing directly to the patrons. I’ve never heard of any performer doing that. Sinatra was very impressed by the intimacy she created and he incorporated this into his performance style by always focusing the way he sang so you would feel like he was singing directly to you. That’s something that he taught me that I hope that I can carry forward.
What parts of the California musical landscape will you explore for California Dreamin’?
Like the state itself, the California musical landscape is big. In the Pop scene, we have the Beach Boys and the Mamas and the Papas. We have the Cool Jazz sound
epitomized by Chet Baker, who not only was an incredibly distinctive trumpeter, but also sang popular standards in a very gentle and cool way. Cool Jazz is indicative of the West Coast in that it is deceptively laid back but very complex in the way it is layered.
We will pay homage to the film music born in California, epitomized in the latter years by John Williams, but also music by Elmer Bernstein, Alex North, and people like Max Steiner and Eric Korngold, who came from Vienna, but adopted a Hollywood sound that is distinctively Californian. The Latino sound of such giants as Lalo Guerrero are also an important part of our heritage. The landscape includes a lot of music that seems disparate, but all share the bond of being born in California.
How do you see Broadway and film music genres feeding into each other?
One of the fun things about the program we’ll close the season with, Oscar Meets Tony , is that it used to be that a show was born on Broadway and then became a Hollywood musical. In the latter years of this collaboration, it’s quite often that a musical begins as a film and then has a Broadway incarnation. We’ll be exploring both of these relationships by celebrating the music from such classics as Gigi , Beauty and the Beast , Victor Victoria , and composers Henry Mancini, Stephen Schwartz, and Alan Menken.
great soloists is one of my great joys. We have two of Broadway’s brightest stars, the two-time Tony-winning Victoria Clark, who is an amazing singer who starred in the original Light in the Piazza , and more recently in Kimberly Akimbo , coupled with the dazzling presence of Norm Lewis, who is another Broadway veteran. They will bring their humor, their incredible style, and their amazing voices to this program of some of the most beloved music you can imagine. So Oscar Meets Tony just might be my favorite show of this season.

DEDICATION TO MUSIC EDUCATION
For over five decades, the Pasadena Symphony’s nationally recognized Youth Orchestras (PYSO) has offered outstanding musical training and personal development for students in the San Gabriel Valley. What originally started over 50 years ago as one ensemble serving 50 students has grown into 11 youth orchestra ensembles offering weekly instruction to over 700 students in grades 4-12.
PYSO offers ensembles for every level, ranging from beginning strings to full symphony orchestras performing major works. All City Orchestra (ACO) also provides 4 tuition-free afterschool ensembles for Pasadena Unified School District elementary band and orchestra students at 4 different school sites to supplement their school music programs. All PYSO ensembles provide exceptional opportunities to grow and play with other students and to perform each year at Ambassador Auditorium, the home of the Pasadena Symphony.
NO-COST ACCESS TO CONCERTS SHOULD BE IN REACH FOR EVERY STUDENT
Join us by making a gift to the PSA’s STUDENT ACCESS PROGRAM, providing no-cost tickets for our community’s students and their families.
PYSO has achieved many milestones this past year. Along with the expansion of ACO to 4 school sites, our Education program provided over 600 hours of Pasadena Symphony Teaching Artist residencies to support PUSD music teachers in the classroom. We also just launched our first ever Summer Camp, a 2-week, tuition-free summer program for PUSD music students, to give kids the opportunity to continue their music education over the summer.

The Pasadena Symphony lost one of our family last summer when our Chief Operating Officer, DREW FLAHERTY passed away suddenly. Drew was the heartbeat of the organization and the driving force behind our operations for the past decade. We will always remember Drew as a warm, kind, fun person who was a stalwart in the California orchestral community. His loss is deeply felt, but his love for music and passion for togetherness and laughter live on. Drew’s family is honored by those who have given in his memory.

Longtime supporters John Baldeschwieler and Marlene Konnar have always been passionate about the Pasadena Symphony’s musical vitality and have launched, through a lead gift, the creation of the Pasadena Symphony’s Artistic Fund. This restricted fund helps sustain the orchestra and provides mission critical resources for the orchestra’s musicians and conductors. Inspired by John and Marlene’s commitment, the donors below have stepped up with a stretch gift to match their generosity. On behalf of all of the musicians of the Pasadena Symphony and POPS, we salute you.
