“Texan Softball program is made up of hard-working female athletes.  This past season, our Varsity team made the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. I believe by improving the appearance of our field, and by adding hitting station platforms, designated pitching area will continue to improve our athletes’ practice performance daily. We are hoping for cameras to video during practice and games. Videoing will be a teaching tool for skill performance, as well as an opportunity for parents/fans to watch our games from home, and for athletes to send to colleges in hopes for a softball scholarship.”

“Dobie High School’s softball program provides students with the opportunity to participate in a competitive, team-based sport. The program focuses on developing athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Players learn the fundamentals of softball, including pitching, hitting, fielding, and base running. The program also emphasizes physical fitness, discipline, and commitment. Coaches provide guidance and training, helping students improve their skills and understand the game’s strategies. We are hoping to upgrade and expand our current batting cages since the destruction by Hurricane Beryl. DHS softball program is a great way for students to stay active, make friends, and represent their school.”

The mission of the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame Committee is to identify Pasadena ISD Alumni who have excelled at the highest level in their sport as a player, coach, journalist, trainer, official or other sports-related position.

We are also honored to welcome our guest emcee, Retired KHOU Sports Anchor and Reporter, and Communication Director for City of Houston Parks and Recreation, Matt Musil.

Tonight, the Athletics Hall of Fame Committee continues its tradition by awarding one Pasadena ISD student-athlete the Bert Coan Memorial Scholarship and two student athletes with Pasadena ISD Hall of Fame scholarships.

Continuing the spirit of giving, Methodist Hospital will award two athletic trainers with scholarships as well. And for the first time, we will award a scholarship to an aspiring media professional with the Robert Avery Memorial Scholarship.

We wish them the best in their college experience and in their professional careers!

None of the above would be possible without the generous support of the Pasadena ISD Athletics Department, the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame Committee and the Pasadena ISD Education

Foundation. We want to thank our generous table sponsors, our founding donors and all our inductees – past and present – their families and their guests. We also wish to acknowledge the generous support of the Pasadena ISD Administration, the Board of Trustees and Pasadena ISD employees. BERT COAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Few athletes in Pasadena ISD history would rank above Bert Coan in versatility. It’s not likely that anyone would outrank him in acclaim.

Generally considered to be the most honored football player in Pasadena football history, Coan was equally heralded for his track exploits while at Pasadena High. As a junior in 1957, Coan almost single-handedly led his team to the school’s only state championship. He won both sprints and the long jump. He also ran the fastest leg on the Eagles’ winning sprint-relay team.

Focused on other events, he rarely competed in the long jump. But at the state meet, he soared 24 feet 4 inches - smashing the state record.

Coan ranked in five events on the National Track Honor Roll: both sprints, the sprint relay, the long jump and the low hurdles. As a senior, he played center on the basketball team and led the Eagles to a district title.

But it was football that landed Coan - and Pasadena High - on center stage. For three seasons, he ranked among the nations most feared backs, a rugged inside runner of towering 6-4 structure and terrifying speed. His long strides on sweeps powered the eagles to the top spot in district offense for three years and earned Coan allstate honors. Coan played one season at TCU and then transferred to Kansas where he became one of the top ball carriers in the old Big Eight.

Coan played seven pro seasons in the old American Football League with the San Diego Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs. He played for the Chiefs in Super Bowl I in January of 1967.

In 2014, he was inducted to the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame and in 2022, the Hall of Fame Committee unanimously decided to award an annual scholarship in his name to a promising student athlete.

ROBERT AVERY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A New Jersey native, Robert Avery began his sports reporting career as the sports editor of the Pasadena Citizen in 1992. Avery held that position for 30 years and concluded his career at the Baytown Sun.

From Little League to the college ranks, Avery painted pictures with words in every article he wrote.

He spent many nights at Veterans Memorial Stadium and fields and courts all over the area. His stories are embedded in many students’ hearts and memories.

Many may still have his articles clipped in scrapbooks for one to reminisce about the “glory days”. Avery is a real testament to the legacy he gave sports in the area, especially Pasadena ISD.

His deep love for Pasadena ISD was so profound that, following his passing, the Board of Trustees honored him by naming the press box at Veterans Memorial Stadium in his memory.

The Pasadena ISD Hall of Fame Committee voted to award a scholarship in his honor to an aspiring journalist, broadcaster, radio-TV-film producer, public relations professional, graphic designer or digital media creator.

MATT MUSIL

MASTER OF CEREMONIES

RETIRED KHOU SPORTS ANCHOR AND REPORTER, COMMUNICATION DIRECTOR FOR CITY OF HOUSTON PARKS AND RECREATION

This year’s Master of Ceremonies for the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame is KHOU 11’s Matt Musil.

Matt Musil had an impressive 43-year career at KHOU 11 News before retiring in April 2024. Since joining KHOU 11 in 1980, Musil wore many hats over the years. He served as the Sports Anchor, Sports Reporter, Executive Producer of Sports, Weekend Sports Anchor, and co-host of 11 News ‘This Morning.’

A native of Frankfort, Kansas, Musil graduated from Kansas State University with a major in Radio-TV Journalism and a minor in coaching. He played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track in high school. Before turning his attention to the radio/TV business, he played baseball up to the semi-professional level.

Musil began his broadcast career at KNDY AM-FM in Marysville, Kansas and later worked at KWNS AM-FM in Pratt, Kansas. His first job in television was at KTVH-TV (CBS) in Wichita, Kansas. He later served two years as sports director at WTVM-TV (ABC) in Columbus, Georgia, before coming to KHOU-TV.

Musil is married and has three children and two grandchildren. He is involved with a number of local charitable organizations. Musil organizes and hosts two low-cost youth basketball camps each summer. One in West Houston and one downtown. His biggest contribution to the community is through his annual charity golf event which is held each fall. Over the past 22 years, The Matt Musil All-Star Golf Classic has raised close to $2,000,000 for Houston-area charities.

Aguilar

Aguilar earned seven letters in baseball and football for the Texans. In football, he earned all-district honors as both a defensive back and a wide receiver.

Aguilar was also a pitching ace for the Rayburn team that competed in the state championship game in 1985 under Hall of Fame Coach Al Campo Sr.

No Pasadena ISD baseball team has advanced to state since.

Aguilar was selected to the All-Greater Houston team as a junior and as a senior was

BRUCE AGUILAR

named the All-Greater Houston player of the year.

Aguilar was named to the South squad of the prestigious North-South All-Star Game the summer after his graduation. He started the game and earned the victory.

He went on to post four productive seasons with the Baylor Bears from 1986 to 1989.

As a sophomore in 1987, Aguilar was named the Bears’ most valuable player. As a junior, he had seven wins which tied for the team lead.

Brewer

A crafty right-handed pitcher for two of the Eagles’ top teams in the Sixties, Brewer lettered two years in both baseball and football at Pasadena High School. The Eagles baseball team won district his junior year. As a senior, Brewer went 4-0 in district play for a 25-9 team that finished third in district. He pitched two seasons for San Jacinto College before transferring to the University of Houston.

Brewer went on to become a key mound component for the Cougars’ playoff teams in 1966 and 1967.

At the College World Series in 1967, Brewer’s relief effort with one scoreless extra inning helped defeat Boston College.

RICK BREWER

PASADENA HIGH SCHOOL

BASEBALL & FOOTBALL - CLASS OF 1963

He then pitched a four-hit shutout against Arizona State to put U of H in the title game.

U of H Coach Lovette Hill said “He’s my giant-killer. I use him against nothing but the giants -- the ones that swing the bat.”

His 2.00 career ERA ranks third in U of H history.

His .800 winning percentage (8-2) is fourth.

Immediately after college, Brewer joined the Air Force and served in Vietnam. He retired as a full colonel.

Brewer was inducted into the University of Houston’s Athletics Hall of Honor in 2024.

Cole 2009

NANCY COLE (BOWMAN) PASADENA MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL

VOLLEYBALL - CLASS OF 2009

A standout volleyball player at Pasadena Memorial High School, Cole was named first team alldistrict three straight years. Twice she was named the team’s MVP.

As a junior, she led the Houston area with 500 kills. As a sophomore, she was No. 1 in the region with 115 blocks.

As a senior she led the Houston area with 630 kills. She was rated the No. 62 volleyball recruit in the nation and named all-state by LoneStarVolleyball.com.

The summer after her graduation, Cole helped lead the Absolute Volleyball Club to the gold medal in the National Division of the USAV Junior Olympics. She was named the division’s MVP.

Cole earned high honors during four seasons as a starter for the Rice volleyball team. She was, arguably, the first female athlete

from Pasadena Memorial to rise to elite status at a Division I school.

She led the Owls to an NCAA postseason berth as a freshman, only the third in school history.

The Owls finished second in Conference USA her junior and senior years.

She was named to Conference USA’s first-team squad two times.

She was an honorable mention All-American selection three times.

Cole established top 10 rankings in several statistical categories during her college career.

She was picked twice as her team’s MVP, and she still ranks in the top 10 in many of the Owls’ career and single-season statistics categories.

2006 Kelly

Presented by:

A versatile athlete in and out of the pool, Kelly rewrote nearly all of the swimming records at Pasadena High School.

She was named the most valuable swimmer in District 23-5A both her junior and senior seasons. Three times she won the district 200 freestyle title and twice won the district 100 backstroke crown.

Kelly broke 71 school records at PHS. Only one record kept by the school eluded her. She shattered 21 Pasadena ISD records.

As a senior, she won the Dale Parrott Award as the outstanding swimmer in Pasadena ISD.

KRISTINE KELLY

PASADENA HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING, TRACK - CLASS OF 2006

She also collected numerous honors in water polo competition.

In track, Kelly set school records in the pole vault and shot put -- and a Pasadena ISD record in the pole vault.

Kelly graduated No. 6 in her class. She is the daughter of Robert and Darla Kelly, both Pasadena ISD swim coaches. Her mom coached her in high school.

Kelly competed in swimming for two years at the University of Houston.

Kelly is now a lawyer in Houston.

McDonald 2003

SHARONDA MCDONALD (KELLEY)

DOBIE HIGH SCHOOL

SOFTBALL, VOLLEYBALL, TRACK - CLASS OF 2003

At Dobie, she was named district co-MVP as a senior shortstop and was twice a unanimous all-district pick. McDonald ranks as probably the best softball position player ever produced by a Pasadena ISD school.

She placed fifth at the state track meet in the 200 meters as a junior.

At Texas A&M, she was named All-Big 12 in each of her four seasons.

She holds Aggie single-season records for runs scored (60) and stolen bases (48) -- and still ranks as the program’s all-time leader in both categories.

Her 48 steals in 2005 led the nation and helped her earn the 2005 NCAA Golden Shoe Award as the nation’s top baserunner.

While at A&M, she set an NCAA record with 73 consecutive stolen bases. That record still stands.

As a senior, she led the Aggies to the Women’s College World Series for the first time in 20 years.

McDonald played professionally for eight years after college while launching her college coaching career. She was named a National Pro Fast-Pitch all-star three times.

Since 2022, McDonald has been the head softball coach at Michigan State; she goes by Sharonda McDonald-Kelley, but she’s “Coach Sho” to her players.

Rodriguez 2003

JOSH RODRIGUEZ

SOUTH HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL

BASEBALL & FOOTBALL - CLASS OF 2003

A standout shortstop at Rice, Rodriguez went on to forge a long career in pro ball that even included a short stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s well remembered for his contributions to Rice’s championship years under legendary coach Wayne Graham. Rodriguez played in the 2006 College World Series before turning pro. He emerged as a star player in the Mexican League from 2018 until his retirement this season.

Rodriguez was a second-round draft choice of the Cleveland Indians following his junior season at Rice.

He started three years at Rice, hitting .306 as a freshman, .345 as a sophomore and .344 as a junior. He was regarded as one of the premier college infielders in the country going into the 2006 draft. The Owls won 148 of 194 games while he was at Rice.

The WAC freshman of the year in 2004, he went on to twice earn third-team All-America and all-regional honors. As a Rice sophomore, he led the team in homers and RBIs.

Selected to play with Team USA, he hit .326 against international competition.

Rice’s post-season fortunes improved each of his three seasons at Rice. The Owls earned a regional spot his freshman year, a super-regional berth his sophomore year and made it to the College World Series his junior season.

Rodriguez was a career minorleaguer except for a seven-game stint with the Pirates in 2011 after he made the team’s opening day roster.

Kramer COACH

Hired in 1977, Coach Bobby Kramer needed only six years to develop a program worthy of state-wide recognition.

Kramer brought numerous titles to Dobie during an 18-year career as head tennis coach.

At the same time, he encouraged youth participation in tennis across the South Belt area.

At its peak in the mid-Eighties, Kramer’s Dobie program earned numerous Top 10 state rankings while dominating competition in District 23-5A.

Starting in 1983, his girls captured five straight district team tennis titles. In 1985, his

BOBBY KRAMER

DOBIE HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS COACH - 1977-1995

combined boys and girls teams won three straight district championships.

His 1985 and 1987 squads advanced to the regional semifinals.

In 1986, the squad won 59 of 63 matches in district play and swept the district field in headto-head competition, 7-0. The Longhorns reached the regional final, falling just one step short of state.

Kramer retired in 1995. He was subsequently elected to the Texas Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Dobie’s Faculty Hall of Honor.

Cross Country State Champions 1980

Coach Bryan’s squad produced the first state championship by a Pasadena ISD school since Pasadena High’s state track conquest in 1957.

It was the first of two titles for Coach John Bryan’s Dobie program. Just over five months later, his boys track team also won the state championship. In their 11 meets that fall, the Longhorns placed in the top three each time, winning 9 out of 11 meets.

At the State cross-country meet, three Dobie runners placed in the Top 20: Gawain Guy took

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

DOBIE HIGH SCHOOL

10th, Pete Ramos 13th and Phillip Williams 19th.

That paved the way for the Longhorns to post 56 points, by far the lowest (and best) score in the field. Edinburg was a distant second with 93 points.

Rounding out the Longhorns’ top 6 finishers were Greg Johnson (24), Dave Windsor (29) and Todd Whistler (31).

The meet was the pinnacle performance for a cross-country program that had finished third at the state meet in 1978 and fifth in 1979.
