Tourism in India is advancing with the passing years but still there are some tourism segments which need much more attention and development. With each passing year development in the leisure industry is unfolding accounting to increase in the footfall of the tourists in India. One of the tourism segment where India needs much more development to be accredited as the best tourist destination in the world is “Cruise Tourism” and to achieve that the first and foremost condition required is to adapt and be responsive to the global demand and trends. India holds lots of potential for Cruise Tourism. Firstly, India is located on the crossroad of most significant sea routes, secondly it already has many important sea ports, third the coastline line of India stretches upto a length of seven and a half a thousand kilometers and certainly India is home to enough mesmerizing destinations to attract tourists from all over the world. So, certainly there is a high scope for India to flourish with flying colours in this highly promising industry. Herein, the report on “Cruise Tourism Market in India” by one of the eminent industry personality of a renowned Cruise Line have shared their expert views and opinions Mr. Naresh Rawal, Star Cruise - India Q1. What is the present scenario of the cruise tourism market in India? The perception of Cruising is changing, more & more people are choosing cruising as an integral part of

their vacation plan. Holidays can now opt for many cabin options to choose from to suit each budget. We are noticing high growth from tier 2 and B towns, that seems to be a positive move already. Being a huge market for Star Cruises and recently introduced Dream Cruises under Genting HongKong portfolio, we have noticed a recorded encouraging growth in recent years. Q2. How are the Indians responding to cruise tourism? The outbound cruise tourism from India has been growing at a steady pace year on year. The Indian traveler has evolved from a 2 Nights itinerary and is now choosing from 3 Night to 7 Night itineraries. Moving from regular cruising to experiencing luxury cruising. There has been evolution on the cabin category as well. Where they were earlier choosing Inside Staterooms, now we are witnessing a higher demand for Balcony cabins and Suite Cabins. The co n s u m e r n ow u n d e rsta n d s t h e advantages of a cruise holiday versus a land holiday. Today a cruise ship can cater to all kinds of holiday maker which may be from Families with children, Senior citizens, honeymooners and the MICE market which is the most evolving segment. I don't see that it is difficult to sell cruise products to Indians any more. Q3. Has the Indian government taken any news steps to improve cruise tourism market in India? We have been receiving continuous support from the Government of India as well as Mumbai port trust authority. The support was even stronger during the Showcase of Genting Dream on 29th October 2 0 1 6 at t h e M u m b a i International cruise terminal. Q4. What are the expectations for 2017? 2017 will be a very strong year for us. As a group company of
Gentling Hong Kong, we now have operating fleet under Star Cruises, to take on a bold initiative to grow the Asia Pacific region as an international cruise destination. Star Cruises has built its reputation on offering first-rate Asian hospitality throughout its fleet of six vessels including SuperStar Virgo, SuperStar Gemini, SuperStar Aquarius, SuperStar Libra, Star Pisces and The Taipan. The first-ever Asian luxury cruise line, Dream Cruises' two new vessels Genting Dream (launching late 2016) and World Dream (launching late 2017) will deliver the highest level of guest service and spacious comfort in the region. Ms. Nalini Gupta, Managing Director, Lotus Destinations (GSA of Costa Cruises India) Q1. What is the present scenario of the cruise tourism market in India? The market size of Indians cruising is in the range of approximately 130,000 per annum. Most Indians typically associate cruising with Singapore and, usually, an Indian client's first cruise would be out of Singapore. Basically Indians want to choose their first cruise on an itinerary which is close to home, with easy visa formalities and flight connectivity. With Costa neoClassica launching the First time Ever Sailings between Mumbai and Maldives, we see Indian cruise numbers grow substantially, as these itineraries will be visa free, limited flight travel time and convenience of embarking and disembarking from Mumbai. With regards to Costa, more Indians are being able to recognize the brand of Costa and they appreciate the fact that Costa is showing so much dedication to t h e I n d i a n m a r ke t , b y a c t u a l l y homeporting a ship in Mumbai. Q2. How are the Indians responding to cruise tourism? Cruise liners are also experimenting with
themed cruises as well. From Party cruises that cater to an audience that loves music and wants to dance the night away, even Indian families are beginning to have destination weddings onboard a cruise. In fact, in May 2016, we had an Indian client who chartered a Costa vessel from Venice-Athens on a 7 night itinerary. More importantly, this was a sailing with entirely Indian vegetarian dining. Also, Shipsomnia, a party themed cruise on our 4 night sailing from Singapore in Jan 2016 on Costa Victoria, had nearly 500 Indians fly to Singapore for this party themed cruise. Cruising is the present and the future for the Indian traveler. Sailings from Europe, Alaska, the Caribbean and even Antartica are also seeing interest from not only travelers in the Tier 1 cities of India, but also from Tier 2 and 3 cities. Q4. What are the expectations for 2017? We expect a growth of nearly 100% increase in MICE numbers, with the introduction First Time Ever cruise sailings between Mumbai to Maldives from Dec 2016 to March 2017. Due to the ease of embarking or disembarking from Mumbai port and no requirement of visas, there has been a lot of interest from corporates looking to book large groups in the first quarter of 2017. The introduction of Mumbai Sailings, has also enhanced the popularity of our sailings from other regions of the globe and we have already closed large MICE groups for our European Mediterranean itineraries, almost 5 months prior the sailing date, which is usually not the norm with a MICE clientele.

TOURIST INFLOW GURU MANTRA is expected to improve in 2017
India is one of the fastest growing market globally and is experiencing a rapid rise in both business and leisure travel. As per Market Research division of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India (which compiles Tourist Statistics data) till November 2016 total growth is 10% over corresponding period of 2015. This increase is mainly due to streamlining of visa norms ie e-tourist visa made operational for 150 countries. Though it had some regulatory controls ie only with single entry. 30 days stay restriction etc. But from December or next year this restrictions have been withdrawn. At least tourists with double entry visa can take visits to Nepal/Srilanka/Bhutan in their packages. Due to restriction of one entry, tourists often did not like to take India packages as that do not suit them. Also 3 time valid Medical visa etc also can boost medical tourism. At least our tour operators can do aggressive marketing with visa relaxations. Incidentally over the
years India’s tourism image has changed which help in bringing more tourists for business tourism and luxury travel segments. Even for business segment, double entry visa has now been made valid. The travel and tourism industry is facing many challenges given the nature of an ever changing and fragmented market particularly with the rise of the sharing economy and technologies growing role in the industry. As travelers and consumers attention spans to get shorter, business need to anticipate market development trends in the customers choice and embrace opportunities to engage them both on life and offline. We expected October-December period (peak season will be good). But sudden demonetization had its own impact and as informed there were 25% cancellations in hotel bookings or tourists prefer to keep India on hold after note ban reading the disturbed situations, currency crunch, long ques. Foreigners need to pay cash as they move around the city at local shops, villages and don’t get liquid cash so avoided India and planned to come when position becomes stable. These tourists are quite adapt in digital transactions but still this has some restrictions in India as whole of India is not digitalized. Also GST is in limbo our fickle tax laws hurt foreign tourists with service tax, luxury tax, road tax, toll tax and tax on tax (about 30% is tax component). The government must come out with a clear tax regulation so that tour operators can give a definitive quotation of packages.
Talking of medical tourism, Indian medical tourism to touch $ 8 billion by 2020 by expert reports. As health care turns in development countries, India’s medical tourism market is expected to move more than double in size for $ 3 billion at present to around $ 8 billion by 2020 (CII Grant Thornton Survey) and cost is a major driver for nearly 80% of medical tourists across the globe. The cost consciousness factor and availability of accredited facilities have led to emergence of several global medical tourism corridors. India has also done a quite remarkable progress for cruise tourism by developing ports and many international liners have added India as Port of call for 2017. That is further supplemented by government liberal introduction of e-tourist visa for Cruise passengers. This is expected to boost international tourist arrivals in 2017. No doubt, India has variety of options to explore with an interesting mix of cities. Thus India offers unique experience like no other country in the world can offer. Experiential Tourism is the buzzword for new generation tourists who are not that keen for seeing monuments. India with its miles of beaches with water sports facilities, adventure activities in its range of Himalayas, sporting activities like Golf, Polo, Himalaya Cycling, rail journeys, camel safaris on Deserts and Culture intervene with living styles is gaining popularity Niche tourism experience. India has also come out as vibrant country
for MICE and has elaborate convention centers of all sizes, exhibition halls, advanced transport with tiers of hotels for business visitors. India’s new recognition now is all about wedding and honeymoon destination. Palace Hotels of Rajasthan, have special attractions and are often chosen for wedding destinations by those who want the luxury marriage in Royal luxury. Even beach wedding in Goa hotels on beach, Himalayan back drop in Srinagar/Gulmarg or Fort locations are in great demands. Ministry of Tourism and tour operators aggressive marketing strategy – B to B meetings with global tour operators at all international platforms have helped in creating confidence. All these have added dynamism to boost international tourist arrivals and so 2017 could bring a remarkable tourism growth. In hotel industry, supply gets augmented in huge numbers and thus ready to meet the growing numbers in tourist arrivals. Air capacity have also gone up and travel facilitation improved. All these give us the confidence, India demand will pick up and trade is optimistic about outlook of 2017. Travel as much as you can. As far as you can. As long as you can. Life is not meant to be lived in one place – explore India one life time is not enough to see India make repeat visits. By Gour Kanjilal, Executive Director, IATO and Former, Dy. INTERNATIONAL NEWS Thailand’s 4th Edition of Luxury Roadshow In India
Thailand's Luxurious Pleasure annual roadshow targets nearly every travel agent in the Indian market. Thailand being a destination of widespread appeal, the Luxurious Pleasure series is a meeting place for buyers and sellers with a focus on high end holidays. The target audience includes agents who sell staple five-stars, to travel agents who simply add a few touches of luxury to an otherwise regular itinerary and those whose itineraries include private islands and helicopter rides. Roadshow was held in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. This includes a growth in the number if travellers opting for 5-star hotels and villas and a good response to market promotions with prices in the range of INR 80,000 to INR 150,000 for a weeklong holiday. Today about 25% of the Indian market is checking into luxury hotels and above (villas, private islands and yachts) and this is up from barely 10% when TAT first launched its
campaign to target the luxury segment. This year the tourism board invested in hiring TV host Anusha Dandekar as brand ambassador to drive the interest of high end women travellers and in golfer Vani Kapoor in order to tap golf travel. Soraya Homchuen, Director, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Mumbai office informed, “Thailand welcomed 1.06 million Indian travellers in 2015. For 2016, the target is 1.1 million – a figure that the destination looks like it is on track to achieve having hit over 700,000 Indian arrivals by August. But more importantly TAT wants to grow high end's share of the pie by another 5%. “Women comprise 23% of the market currently and for this year we would like to bring this up to 30-35%,” Homchuen said. She concluded saying, “We have to balance our qualitative and quantitative growth as we go forth which I think is also beneficial to the travel agent and I am counting on the support of the travel trade towards this effect.”
