Irvine, Calif.—CarMD has released its 2019 CarMD Vehicle Health Index (VHI) report. The annual VHI report provides an overview of information regarding check engine-related car repairs, costs and trends.

The report found that in 2018 – for the first time since CarMD has reported the rankings – there was a tie in the No. 1 most commonly diagnosed check engine light repair with “replace ignition coil(s) and spark plug(s)” and “replace oxygen sensor,” each accounting for 5.81 percent of repairs.

This past year, U.S. vehicle owners also saw a 6.5 percent year-over-year increase in the average cost to repair check engine light issues with costs up across all four U.S. regions.

“Several factors impact the type and cost of repairs, including vehicle age, driving conditions, upkeep and how often a driver addresses a dashboard warning light, which

can snowball from a single faulty spark plug into the need for additional repairs if ignored,” said Leon Chen, CEO of CarMD. “By monitoring industry trends we hope to educate drivers about the importance of repair and maintenance. Likewise, as our data reports an increase or decrease in a particular repair, automotive service professionals can adjust their customer communication and parts inventory accordingly.”

Rounding out the five most common problems found to trigger the check engine light after ignition coil and spark plug, and O2 sensor were 3) catalytic converter, 4) loose or damaged fuel cap and 5) ignition coil (without sparkplug replacement).

There was a slight increase in ignition coil issues, while slightly fewer mass air flow sensor, oxygen sensor and EVAP purge control valve replacements in 2018.

Faulty spark plugs can trigger ignition coil failure, which is why they are often replaced simultaneously. High underhood temperatures and age can also cause them to fail.

CarMD found that the average cost to

repair a check engine problem in the U.S. in 2018 was $381 including parts ($224) and labor ($157), representing an 11 percent increase in labor and 3.5 percent uptick in parts costs.

Repair costs were up across all regions of the U.S., with the West seeing the largest increase (8 percent) and Midwest only seeing a 1 percent increase. Vehicle owners in the West paid the most for check enginerelated car repairs ($387) – nearly 6 percent more than drivers in the Midwest, who paid the least ($366). The most common repair in the West, Midwest and Northeast was “replace oxygen sensor(s)” while it was “replace ignition coil(s) and spark plug(s)” in the South.

The 2019 CarMD Vehicle Health Index analyzed repairs needed on 7,167,314 inuse vehicles reported to and validated by CarMD’s network from Jan. 1, 2018 to Dec. 31, 2018. Sacramento Calif.— Every year in April, the Automotive Service Councils of California, California Automotive Business Coalition and California Autobody Association co-host Joint Automotive Aftermarket Industry Legislative Day to interact with their local politicians. It’s all about building relationships as shop owners from all over the state convened at the Capitol Event Center on April 23, to devise a strategy before meeting with their representatives and discuss important bills.

The day-long event opened with comments from Lobbyist Jack Molodanof, as he reviewed priority legislation and issues concerning three bills that can either positively or negatively impact the automotive repair industry in California.

ASCCA, CalABC and CAA support AB 1303: Career Technical Education Funding (O’Donnell, D-Long Beach); oppose AB 755: California Tire Tax: Storm Water Projects (Holden, D-San Gabriel Valley) and have concerns with SB 522: Sales Taxes on Labor (Hertzberg, D-San Fernando) as written.

Before proceeding to the Capitol to make their appointments with their senators and assemblymen, Molodanof shared some common sense directives about the right ways to communicate with their representatives.

“The idea is to establish relationships with your local politicians here. That way, when you go back to your respective regions, they are already familiar with you and vice versa. Legislative Day is not the

end of this process, but rather the beginning of it.”

In Molodanof’s guide, Do’s and Don’ts, How to in Lobby in California, he tells shop owners how to prepare for meetings with their legislators, including what to say at the meeting and the importance of connecting with each respective legislators’ staff.

Following Molodanof’s presentation, Bureau of Automotive Repair Chief Pat Dorais talked about the way his organization is embracing today’s technology to help both consumers and shops. “We’re entering our new electronic age to be more efficient and move toward being paperless,” Dorais said. “We now recognize texting as an accepted process for signing off on repair orders via smart phones, tablets and laptops. We are also proactively pursuing more electronic systems to be more responsive and transparent while providing more streamlined methods as well.”

After the initial orientation session, attendees began walking to the Capitol in order to meet with their legislators and discuss the three pressing bills. With more than 75 scheduled appointments on their agenda, 2019 Legislative Day participants ran throughout the halls to cover as much territory as possible within a limited period of time.

To get a break in the middle of a busy day, all three organizations hosted a luncheon back at the Capitol Event Center in which California Assemblyman Evan Low (D-San Jose), received the ASCCA, CalABC and CAA 2019 Legislator of the Year award for his work in 2018 on AB 3141 (Bureau of Automotive Repair: Automotive Repair Dealers: Maintenance and Services). q Parts & People

Some collision shop owners can now achieve manufacturer certification while others will struggle to distinguish between certified and non-certified qualifications, says industry consultant Steven E. Schillinger.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers has adopted OEM position statements and changed the way shop owners achieve collision repair credentials.

As vehicle complexity has increased in the last decade, diagnostic procedures and repair obligations continue to grow. Fortunately, he said, there is a program tailored for shop owners and dealers seeking assistance.

by Dick DeLoach Whittier, Calif.—Jorge Rico opened ACG Auto Collision Group just two years ago, yet, the company already has three locations and has experienced 75 percent growth. All thanks to investing more than $1 million in equipment for all three shops, and a long-range plan that includes becoming a 20-shop MSO and eventually opening a collision repair training school.

“I started in the collision industry as a sales and marketing rep for another shop,” Rico said. “After one year in that position, I decided to open up my own shop. I opened the second shop in L.A. in May 2018 and the third shop in Gardena in June 2018.”

Rico attributes part of ACG’s growth to the fact that coming from the other shop helped him, because he knew what he did not want to do in his own facility.

The 44,000-square-foot shop and lot in Whittier was originally a box company, so Rico had to tear out everything to the bare walls and start from scratch.

“I was able to build a state-of the-art collision facility here with the latest technology and equipment, including a $250,00 dedicated clean room for aluminum repairs, which allowed us to obtain those OEM certifications.”

To establish credentials, a Certificate of Documents (OECert) is available through state-licensed insurance agents. Shop owners and operators who meet certain credit, OEM and regulatory requirements, can qualify for a certificate. If the insurance company determines that a shop qualifies for manufacturer requirements, an OECert performance bond is issued.

“An Insured Performance Program is a blessing to shop owners and operators,” Schillinger said, “because the OECert verification requirements are considerably easier than those found in the current Garagekeepers insurance marketplace.”

Rico said ACG uses tabletbased AllData diagnostic tools for all pre- and post-repair scans, noting that his shop was actually part of the pilot program when the tools were released to the public.

“We sublet ADAS calibrations to major dealerships, which ensures vehicles are calibrated with all the correct equipment per vehicle make and model.

Most glass replacement is also sublet to improve our efficiencies.”

The shop has the latest Blowtherm spray booth, a colormatching camera, a computerized mixing system, and sprays Axalta Spies Hecker waterborne paint, which it purchases from Dave Finley at FinishMaster, who Rico said provides the shop “tremendous” support.

“We buy collision parts from OPSTrax, Keystone/LKQ, Moss Bros, Ross Nissan of El Monte, Buena Park Honda, Premier Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Buena Park, Montebello Ford, Tesla, and many other major dealerships.”

ACG’s success is also a direct result of online and social media advertising and marketing, spearheaded by David Torres, IT and marketing manager, and building relationships with dealerships, members of the auto industry, and insurance companies.

Once the shop was all set up, Rico and Torres visited every import and domestic new-car dealership in the surrounding areas and left brochures.

“Now we get retail customer referrals from dealerships, and we do wholesale work for Honda of Buena Park, Ross Nissan, Premiere Chrysler, Ford of Montebello, Tesla of Buena Park, and Premier Chevrolet of Buena Park.”

An average of 80 cars are in process at any given time, and average RO is $1,750-$2,500, which are both up. General Manager Thomas Vasquez has implemented a quality-control process with 60 items on a checklist to improve workflow that Rico said has already started reducing turn times.

“The industry is rapidly moving toward more electric and aluminum vehicles to meet CAFE requirements,” Rico said. “ACG identifies the new trends and we are ‘growing our own’ technicians and training them to be up to date with the new certification requirements.” q

by Jay Sicht Mulvane, Kan.â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Whether a shop is focused on DRP or non-DRP business, consumers and insurers are looking for a different collision repair experience than just a few years ago, said Mike Anderson, owner of Collision Advice, who was the featured speaker at the inaugural Kansas Auto Body Association Trade Show, April 26 and 27. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Three to five years ago, if someone wrecked their vehicle and called their insurance carrier and the insurance company told them where to go, they kind of took that at face value,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consumer will not go to a shop just because an insurance company told them to; they will go online to do their homework. They take the word of online reviews over that of their own family and friends.â&#x20AC;?

Whipping out his smart phone, he asked, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Siri, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best auto body shop near me?,â&#x20AC;? which returned a listing of body shops, organized by their Yelp review.

So if the consumer comes in and says, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ABC Insurance told me to get three estimates,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; instead of blowing them off, we need to pick up the phone and call an agent and assist them with filing the claim. We also need to assist them with making a rental car reservation.

by John Yoswick Nashville, Tenn.—Does an OEM crash part have to be ordered through the automaker’s dealership parts channel in order to be labeled as an “OEM part?”

The question may at first seem esoteric, but it’s one that could have significant impact for body shops, insurance companies and state regulators, not to mention consumers with collision damage.

That’s why a Collision Industry Conference (CIC) committee that’s working to define parts-type definitions has attracted more than 200 participants to its weekly conference calls.

Here’s one such real-world scenario the committee is looking to resolve: There are now companies selling what are essentially OEM parts, made by or for the automaker, and delivered in OEM packaging. But rather than being sold and delivered by a dealership affiliated with that automaker, they are supplied by third-party companies, and only those third parties, not the automaker, offer any warranty on those parts.

Oregon shop owner Ron Reichen explained at CIC how such a part is described or “coded” on a shop’s invoice can matter for a variety of reasons. Such parts are sometimes described in estimating or online parts marketplaces as “alt-OEM” or “opt-OEM.” But California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), which

regulates the approximately 4,000 body shops in that state, has said such terms are too ambiguous, and has prohibited use of those terms on shop’s paperwork for consumers. California shops must describe all parts only as new, used, OEM, nonOEM, reconditioned or rebuilt.

But even outside of California, Reichen said that how parts are described matters. A shop on a direct repair program may be required by the insurer to use a certain percentage of “alternative parts.” Those agreements may also designate which types of parts will be discounted by the shop for the insurer. In addition, a customer with a leased vehicle may be expected to use only new OEM parts. A shop certified by an automaker also may be expected to use OEM parts on that automaker’s vehicles. At CIC in Nashville, Tenn., in April, Ken Weiss, who co-chairs the CIC committee, said 10 one-hour conference call meetings of the committee hasn’t helped develop more consensus on the issue. One compromise that has been proposed is labeling such parts as “OEM third-party supplied.”

Why would a shop opt to buy such a part? Weiss said it could be because a thirdparty supplier has a more robust inventory on hand and can get the part to the shop more quickly than a local dealer.

“That third party may also offer a discount to a small shop that he can’t negotiate on his own,” Weiss said.

But repairers at CIC — most notably board members of the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) — argued that

any part sold outside an automaker’s supply chain shouldn’t include “OEM” in the descriptor because the automaker no longer “warrants or supports that part.”

Weiss and others argued that unlike a non-OEM part, such parts are made by or for the automaker and come in OEM packaging so have all the physical characteristics as an “OEM parts” and thus could be labeled as a third-party supplied OEM part.

“We are not making business decisions here,” Weiss said. “We’re trying to define the part so people know what’s coming out of the estimating platform or from the parts platform. So they can say, ‘I’m suspicious of that part; I now know clearly it’s an OEM part as far as characteristics are concerned, but it’s delivered by a thirdparty supplier with a third-party warranty, and I’m not going to use it because I don’t want the liability.’ That’s what a definition is. It gives you a clear understanding of what you’re receiving.”

But SCRS’ Aaron Schulenburg, who cochairs the committee with Weiss, said parts descriptions also need to be understood by consumers, and most won’t understand how an “OEM third-party supplied part” differs from an “OEM part.” Given that a key difference is how the part is warranted makes it important for everyone involved to understand the labeling.

Fred Iantorno, of CIECA, who is working with the committee, defined “consensus” as developing something each side “can live with,” but Schulenburg said that has been hard to find on this issue.

Balancing OEM and insurer relationships

Accurate labeling or descriptions wasn’t the only parts-related discussion at CIC in Nashville. Representatives of two automakers were asked if they had advice for a shop owner trying to balance a relationship they have with an insurance company with one they have with an automaker, given that DRP agreements and OEM certification programs may take different approaches in terms of parts selection.

Mark Allen, of Audi of America, agreed it’s a difficult question for shops.

“When the repair procedures are developed through service engineering and they are crash-tested, there are no alternative parts used,” Allen said. “So I can’t tell you how they are going to perform. That is a large concern. I think the consumer needs to be made aware that we don’t have the information on how an alternative part will perform. I’m not saying that just in terms of fit, finish and corrosion protection; I’m saying that in terms of protecting your life. Period. It’s a tough place to be. Detroit—Brembo and Nissan technicians have engineered a bespoke braking system for the 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO and Track Edition. Brembo’s one-piece, sixpiston aluminum monoblock front calipers have a more aggressive design enhancing the overall look of the GT-R. The calipers have been designed with integrated tie rod which leads to a stiffer and overall slimmer caliper within the 20 x 10-inch wheel of the GT-R. This all-new caliper design also grabs on to a 16.14 x 1.5-inch (410mm x 38 mm) carbon ceramic disc, one of the largest that Brembo-SGL produces.

SEMA Hall of Fame names three new members to be recognized July 26 2019 inductees are Bob Chandler, Bruce Crower and Marla Moore

Representing an esteemed group of industry icons who have influenced and inspired the $43 billion automotive specialty equipment industry, the three will be recognized as part of the SEMA Installation & Gala on Friday, July 26, at the Anaheim Marriott in Anaheim, Calif.

Chandler is the creator and owner of Bigfoot, the Ford F-250 pickup that is credited with starting the monster truck craze nearly 45 years ago. Chandler created Bigfoot in 1975 when his personal offroading passion lead him to a series of truck modifications, including bigger tires, bigger axles and rear steering.

At the time, monster trucks didn’t exist, and Bigfoot gained national attention at car shows, making television appearances and eventually spawning 20 clones that continue to tour the country today. Bigfoot paved the way for an entire market of monster trucks and has influenced the truck industry as a whole.

AAA’s annual electric vehicle opinion survey found that while consumer interest remains steady, consumers lack a comprehensive understanding of electric vehicle performance – giving them pause when it comes time to buy a new car. Six in 10, for example, are unsure whether an electric vehicle battery will last longer on the freeway or in stop-and-go traffic.

Key findings

n Sixteen percent of consumers say they are likely to buy a an electric vehicle the next time they are in the market for a new or used vehicle. n Milennials and Generation X are more likely to consider buying an electric vehicle than Baby Boomers (23 percent and 17 percent vs. 8 percent).

Denver—Just 16 percent of Americans say they are likely to buy an electric vehicle the next time they are in the market for a new car, per a new survey from AAA. That’s down from last year’s all-time high of 20 percent, and on par with 2017 figures. Surprisingly, only four in 10 Americans believe most vehicles will be electric by 2029 – a smaller percentage than those who believe most cars will be fully autonomous by that time, which is much less likely. All told, a general lack of consumer familiarity and hands-on experience contributes to the slow adoption of electric vehicles.

If you purchased certain Aftermarket Automotive Sheet Metal Products (“AMSM”) directly from one of the Defendants below, you may be entitled to a cash payment and your rights may be affected.

Defendants Include: Taiwan Kai Yih Industrial Co., Ltd.; Tong Yang Industry Co., Ltd.; TYG Products, L.P.; Jui Li Enterprise Company, Ltd.; Gordon Auto Body Parts Co. Ltd.; AP Auto Parts Industrial, Ltd.; and Cornerstone Auto Parts, LLC. What is this lawsuit about? Direct Purchaser Plaintiffs claim that Defendants violated the United States federal antitrust laws by agreeing to fix prices and limit supply for AMSM. AMSM includes hoods, doors, bumpers, fenders, bonnets, floor panels, trunk assemblies, trunk lids, tailgates, roof panels and reinforcement parts. Defendants have denied and continue to deny each and all of the claims and contentions alleged by Direct Purchaser Plaintiffs, as well as all charges of wrongdoing or liability. The Court has not decided in favor of any Party.

A proposed Settlement has been reached with AP Auto Parts Industrial Ltd., formerly known as Auto Parts Industrial, Ltd. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Cornerstone Auto Parts, LLC (together “API”) for USD$3,250,000 in cash, which, after Taiwan taxes, will net at least USD$2,600,000 in a settlement fund (“Settlement Fund”). Prior settlements were reached with Tong Yang Industry Co., Ltd., Taiwan Kai Yih Industrial Co., Ltd., and TYG Products, L.P., Jui Li Enterprise Company, Ltd., and Gordon Auto Body Parts Co. Ltd. After deducting costs, fees and expenses, the balance of the API Settlement Fund will be distributed to the Class on a pro-rata basis depending on how much you spent on AMSM during the Class Period from all the Defendants.

You are included in the Court certified Class if you fit the following description: All persons and entities in the United States, and its territories and possessions, that purchased Aftermarket Automotive Sheet Metal Products directly from any of the Defendants between January 1, 2003 and September 4, 2009.

How do I get a Settlement payment? If you are included in the Court certified Class and you submitted a valid Claim Form in conjunction with the prior settlements, you will automatically receive a payment from this Settlement if it is approved and becomes final.

What are my options? Do Nothing: If you do nothing and you did not exclude yourself from the certified Class or prior settlements, you will be bound by the Settlement Agreement and Release, as well as the Court’s orders and decisions in this Settlement. Object to the Settlement: You may object to all or any part of the Settlement and give reasons why you think the Court should not approve it. Your written objection must be mailed to the Settlement Administrator, Class Counsel, Counsel for API, and the Court and must be postmarked no later than July 3, 2019. You may also request to appear and speak at the Final Approval Hearing. You may have your own attorney attend, at your own expense, but are not required to.
