Teacher Profiles The Panama Teacher Match Program aims to increase English language capacity in the Panamanian public school system by matching American English volunteer teachers with Panamanian public school English teachers to assist in classroom instruction, curriculum development, and teacher training. American teachers will spend 6 weeks working alongside Panamanian teachers in all 10 provinces of Panama. The Panama Teacher Match Program also promotes mutual understanding between the American and Panamanian cultures. American teachers will live with host families throughout the country and share their culture with Panamanian citizens.
Amy Burge (Seattle, WA) Ms. Burge is currently a high school Spanish teacher in Seattle, WA and has taught ESL both in the U.S. and in Chile. She is a National Board Certified teacher in English as a New Language; she holds a Masters degree in TESOL and a Bachelors degree in Spanish. Meeting people from around the world is something that she loves. She has lived abroad in Chile, Argentina, & Spain. She and her husband enjoy hosting exchange participants from around the world in their home; it has been a great way to deepen their understanding of different cultures. Ms. Burge is excited to have the opportunity to work with English teachers and live in Panama. When not traveling around the world, Ms. Burge enjoys hiking and working in her garden.
Sonya Dill (Columbus, OH) Ms. Dill considers life an adventure, and teaching an honor. She has been an educator at the elementary and secondary levels for 19 years. She has worked for 13 years as a Teacher of ESOL in Whitehall, a four square mile urban suburb in the Columbus, Ohio area. She has the privilege of working with students in various capacities as they strive to acquire proficiency of the English language. Ms. Dill is also a life-long learner born into a family of educators and world travelers. Her students’ cultures continually enrich her. She has acquired Spanish fluency and is pursuing Portuguese. She has traveled to eleven countries including Israel, Paraguay, Mexico, and Dominican Republic, visited Venezuela on several occasions for missions, and explored Japan as part of a U.S. teacher delegation through the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund. In her spare time, she enjoys family and friends, pursuing good health and fitness, and supporting her church community.
