Dear Friends,
A few days after the dedication of our new St. Joseph Chapel, I was rushing past (at my usual pace!) and was stopped in my tracks by light streaming through the St. Joseph rose window (left) which cast an aura around the tabernacle. I snapped the photo on our cover, and this unplanned encounter inspired Sr. Mary Terzo to compose this poem, entitled “Stop”:
A Whisper…“Come, say ‘hello,’ Don’t hurry past… stop just a moment.”
I entered… A wondrous sight shone before me The Tabernacle all-aglow, radiating Love!
Awe-filled I pondered, So rewarded my momentary pause! His response, the greeting only His love could create!
Sr. Mary Terzo adds, “How often do we rush by the Christ waiting for us, asking us to be aware of His Presence, of His burning Desire to love us into life? Let us never be too busy to spare a moment to greet Him, welcome Him into our ‘busyness’.” To which I add a resounding “Amen!”
Enjoy this special issue! Peace,

On August 19, after 51 months and one day of waiting, the Salesian Sisters finally dedicated their new St. Joseph Chapel in North Haledon, NJ. With Sr. Phyllis Neves as a delegate of our Salesian Mother General, and three bishops in attendance –Bishop Kevin Sweeney, Bishop of Paterson, NJ; Bishop Manny Cruz, Auxiliary Bishop of Newark, NJ; and Bishop Robert Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, NY – the Salesian Pro vincial, Fr. Timothy Zak, and numer ous other dignitaries and generous benefactors, the “Order of a Dedi cation of a Church” proceeded with great solemnity and beauty thanks to the preparatory work of countless Salesian Sisters, led by Sr. Maria Colombo, Province Secretary.
The celebration was marked by a sense of awe and grat itude for the beauty and sacrifices of so many generous donors and the skills of our Sisters who spearheaded a complicated project, in particular our Provincial Supe rior, Sr. Joanne Holloman, and Sr. Mary Rinaldi, who oversaw the massive fundraising effort. Sr. Margaret Wilhelm and Sr. Fran DeGrossa negotiated and oversaw the construction, contracts, permits, and design.
Over 1,000 people joined the ceremony on livestream, with more than 300 in attendance in the Chapel. Follow ing the dedication and Mass, a celebratory dinner was held at The Brownstone in Paterson, NJ.
But this was not enough for the Salesian Sisters! The following day, August 20, families were invited to cel ebrate with games, swimming, food, music, and even an ice-cream truck. A tour of the new Chapel, followed by Mass, fittingly closed the day.
Both days marked the 150th anniversary of the Institute of Mary Help of Christians (Salesian Sisters) and the fifth anniversary of the formation of the St. Joseph Province of the Eastern U.S. and Canada.
The Sisters pray for many decades of joyous celebrations around their new house, which God has built among them thanks to the outpouring of prayers and generosity from their many “Partners” across the country.
We share special moments on the following pages, with photographs by the amazing Lorraine Corsale. Enjoy!
“Let us take part in these sacred rites with loving devotion, listening to the Word of God with faith, so that our community, reborn from the one font of Baptism and nourished at the same table, may grow into a spritual temple and, brought together at one altar, may advance in the love from on high.”
Happy to be here! Bishop Manny Cruz of Newark, Bishop Kevin Sweeney of Paterson, and Bishop Robert Brennan of Brooklyn.
As part of the ceremony, Bishop Sweeney receives the key to the new Chapel (above), which is unlocked by Fr. James Mulloy, SDB (left), chaplain at North Haledon.
The Order of the Dedication of a Church
“Enter the gates of the Lord with thanksgiving, His courts with songs of praise.”
“Sanctify therefore ... this water You have created that, sprinkled on us and on the walls of this church, it may be a sign of the cleansing waters of salvation, in which we have been washed in Christ and made a temple of Your Spirit.”
“We pray that, as we ask God’s dedication upon this new Chapel, that our faith will be inflamed, that we will have that zeal, that passionate love, to be the Church that God is calling us to be. We pray that all those who pray here are built up in faith, hope, and love.”
Right and below, Bishop Sweeney anoints the walls of the Chapel with sacred chrism (consecrated oil).
“May the Lord by His power sanctify this altar and this house, which by our ministry we anoint, so that, as visible signs, they may express the mystery of Christ and the Church.”The Order of the Dedication of a Church Bishop Sweeney consecrates the new altar with sacred chrism. Sr. Lise Parent, Sr. Isabel Garza, Sr. Antoinette Cedrone, and (hidden) Sr. Betty Ann Martinez prepare the newly-anointed altar. Concluding Blessing
“May God, who has willed that all His scattered children be gathered in His Son, grant that you become His temple and the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.”
The new Chapel is a blessing for generations to come. What a bright, vibrant, beautiful sanctuary! Full of the light of Christ, especially in the afternoon sun. The acoustics wonderfully highlighted the choir. We are looking forward to our daughter enjoying the space for the next three years as a Mary Helper.
Meredith & Michael Mascitello, Bloomingdale, NJ
Calm, ordered, so reverent! Just to think that this is Earth – imagine what Heaven will be! Wow!
Sr. Eileen Tickner, FMA
Oh! That organ! The choir singing was superb! The Chapel is stunning and the crucifix held my attention throughout the consecration! Everything speaks of the Divine Presence!
Fr. Frank Twardzik, SDB, South Orange, NJ
The setting of the crucifix against the light blue back ground, along with the rays of the sun shining upon it, formed a dramatic scene. The presence of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph made the scene complete. The or chestrated sound of the organ with the flute, percussion, and guitar filled the church with magnificent sounds which sustained the lovely voices of the choir. It was a spiritual experience not to be forgotten.
Leonard & Carmela Altamura, Union City, NJ
The Chapel is amazing. It was a blessing to participate. The music was heavenly. The lec tors were perfect. Bishop did a beautiful job! Thank you to all the Sisters for all they did!
Dr. Idalia Lastra, Miami, FL
I felt like I was in Heaven. My heart was filled with joy to see that the Salesian Sisters finally have a home again.
Mary Jean Hayek, Totowa, NJ
It was a gorgeous, beautiful day! The Bishop was so alive with the “Salesian” spirit filling us all with the joy of the day.
I am so thrilled I came and celebrated this beautiful day and the future my Salesian family will continue to have.
Maggie Nunez, Tampa, FL
Today was extraordinary. To be at the dedication of the beautiful Chapel of St. Joseph that rose from the ashes was a great spiritual moment for us that we will cherish. We look forward to years of worship with our dear Sisters.
Ed and Helen Lord, Washington, CT
It was such a blessing to behold the gift of our Lord’s home in the Chapel of the Salesian Sisters.
Lizzy A. Rangel, Chicago, IL
A breathtaking reflection of the many souls on Earth and in Heaven who sacrificed, served, taught, laughed, cried, and prayed that the Salesian Sisters of the past, present, and future may serve the young for Jesus and His Church, with Mary Help of Christians as their guide!
Sr. Pamela Rose Suresca, 2nd year Novice, Newton, NJ
The Chapel looks amazing. What a testament to the devotion to God and the willpower of the Sisters. It never ceases to amaze me what your small group can accomplish. I was proud to be a small part of your endeavor.
Mayor Randy George North Haledon, NJ
It was an honor to work with the Sisters. Lighting St. Joseph Chapel was a labor of love!

During the celebration of the liturgy, I was struck by a feeling of connection. We’re united with all the Sisters, young people, and families who prayed in the old chapel and will continue to pray in the new.
Sr. Chelsey Sanchez 2nd year Novice, Newton, NJ
As soon as we entered we were filled with peace. The brightness is refreshing and fills each visitor with calm. We were in awe.

In 2015 Pope Francis gifted the world with his encyclical Laudato Si’ (“Praise be to you”). In paragraph #76, we read, “The word ‘creation’ has a broader meaning than ‘nature,’ for it has to do with God’s loving plan in which every creature has its own value and significance.”
Most of us have seen a beautiful sunrise or sunset. We’ve seen the colors of autumn, chilling winter scenes, and new life of spring. We marvel at the beauty that
stewardship means we look upon each person as a precious and vital resource of great potential and gift, capable of answering the challenges that we face with creativity.
The Church is asking us to respond to the challenges raised by environmental issues by stressing the need for every individual and every nation to play their part. Creation has value because it reveals something about God the Creator.
surrounds us, whether it is the view of the ocean or mountains. We stand in awe at God’s creation.
We have also seen smog, depressed inner cities, litter, and wastes on our streets and highways. We’ve seen pictures of children and adults looking for food in dumpsters or on mounds of garbage in a landfill. We’ve seen the same beautiful images of God’s creation destroyed by senseless acts of humanity. These sights do not lead us to think of God’s majesty and grandeur. Our reactions can be sadness, maybe anger, or – worse yet –perhaps we don’t even notice or care.
Pope Francis tells us that we are stewards, not masters, of our earth. Each of us has a personal and community responsibility to care for the precious gift of God’s creation. Responsible stewardship is a commitment to care for both earth and neighbor. Responsible

Pope Francis has said, “Future generations will never forgive us if we miss the opportunity to protect our common home.” Let us listen to the cry of the earth. This cry encompasses all of creation, including how we respect each other and live in charity. We cannot stand on the sidelines hoping that others will make the needed change. Each one’s contribution is needed. Let’s see what we can do as a Salesian Family to respond to the “cry of the earth.”

Be sure of my prayers and those of the Sisters!

The Salesian Sisters Partners Circle was founded in 1991 to provide unrestricted funds for urgent needs of the Salesian Sisters and their mission. These include support for capital needs, scholarship assistance, technology upgrades, and funds for those unforeseen situations that require immediate attention (such as during the COVID-19 pandemic). Your annual contribution to this fund empowers the Sisters to continue their mission: To Provide Financial Assistance and Volunteer Services to the Salesian Sisters and to the Young People in their Care for the Advancement of Education, Vocations, and Community Life.
The fire which destroyed St. Joseph Chapel in North Haledon, NJ, in 2018 underscored the vital importance of the Partners Circle Fund, enabling the Sisters to respond quickly in an emergency and begin the rebuilding process – now complete!
There are 8 levels of membership, starting at $250, which are listed on these three pages. PC denotes a member of the Partners Circle National Board of Trustees, a group of talented lay people who advise the Sisters on distribution of the fund. Won’t you consider joining this dynamic group as we celebrate our 31st anniversary? Please call us today: (877) OUR-NUNS. Thank you and God bless you!

Time for rejoicing – and cake!
Sr. Joanne Holloman, Provincial Superior, joins Sr. Katie Flanagan, Sr. April Cabaccang, and Sr. April Hoffman.
On August 5, the 150th anniversary of the found ing of the Salesian Sisters, Sr. Katie Flanagan, Sr. April Cabaccang, and Sr. April Hoffman professed their perpetual vows of obedience, poverty, and chastity.
Bishop Kevin Sweeney of the Diocese of Paterson celebrated the historic Profession Mass. Perpetual religious profession is the culmination of 10 to 13 years of religious formation, from the beginning of a woman entering Salesian religious life. Through it, she makes lifelong vows to God to live according to the Salesian charism and spirituality. It is a joyous moment in a Sister’s life, but really just the beginning of many more years to be lived in fidelity.
Sr. Katie has now returned to Miami, FL, as Campus Minister at Immaculata-La Salle High School. Sr. April Hoffmann received an assignment to go to Rome, Italy for a two-year Spirituality Program. Sr. April Cabaccang has returned to Naples, FL as a theology teacher at St. John Neumann High School.
Congratulations, Sisters! Rest assured of our prayers!
The change of seasons brings a change in personnel. Sr. Elfie DelRosario is the new Vocations Director, succeeding Sr. Theresa Lee, now at St. Anthony School in Hawthorne, NJ.
Sr. Elfie made her perpetual profession in 2020 and is best known for saying “Praise Jesus!” at events large and small. She has a great love for her Sisters and community life, and recently served at Corpus Christi-Holy Rosary School in Port Chester, NY. Her new responsibilities will bring her all over the country and give her the opportunity to accompany countless women who are discerning a vocation to Salesian religious life.
Please pray for Sr. Elfie as she hits the road! And if you know someone interested in the religious life, please e-mail Sr. Elfie: happynun@gmail.com.

At left, Sr. Kathleen Deighan, Sr. Nicole Daly, and Sr. Amy Nguyen at prayer.
Below, Sr. Kathleen celebrates with her mom, Mary!
First profession takes place at the end of the first four years of forma tion, and is followed by a Sister renewing her vows every year for 6 to 9 years, until it is felt she is ready to make perpetual vows. Sr. Nicole is now at St. John Neumann High School in Naples, FL. Sr. Amy is at Villa Madonna School in Tampa, FL, and Sr. Kathleen is at Corpus Christi-Holy Rosary School in Port Chester, NY.
Congratulations and prayerful best wishes, Sisters!
