Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s letter Dear Friends, The show of hands on our cover, belonging to Salesian Sisters and students, speaks volumes. The setting is Villa Madonna School in Tampa, FL. The occasion was a milestone in the project to construct a much-needed Pavilion, a covered outdoor space for sports and gatherings, sheltered from the brutal Florida sun. Before Wichman Construction poured the concrete foundation, Sisters and students gathered to scatter medals of Mary Help of Christians, invoking her protection over all who will assemble and play there in the future. It was a solemn and prayerful moment, captured in the expression of fourth-grader Aliana Delaphena. Speaking of construction, St. Joseph’s Chapel continues to rise! Gift opportunities are still available. See page 3. Our two main fundraisers for the year are just around the corner – and virtual: the Autumn Gala for Mary Help of Christians Academy on November 11 (see page 7) and the Thanksgiving Basket for Villa Madonna School and the Salesian Youth Center on November 18 (see page 17). Please join us and support our students! Thanksgiving is also nearly upon us, and we Salesian Sisters have so much for which to be thankful, thanks to all of YOU. God bless you! Peace,

Please pray to St. Joseph “As we Salesian Sisters continue our journey to bring Christ to the young, to spread the charism, and to create a Holy Family in our communities, it is the example, protection, and guidance of St. Joseph that will help us do so,” says Sr. Joanne Holloman, Provincial Superior. As the Year of St. Joseph comes to a close on December 8, 2021, we share the traditional prayer which the first Salesian Sisters in Mornese, Italy, sang in Italian nearly 150 years ago.

St Joseph, my dear one, come to my house, I’ll wait for you. Come, see, You know what is missing. Come, look, whatever is missing, bring it, and if something isn’t supposed to be in my house,

Come, St. Joseph, and take it away!

Celebrating the profession of First Vows and Final Vows

“I am so happy that God has called me!”

A

ugust 5 is always a banner day in the life of the Salesian Sisters, for on this day each year we celebrate significant vocational milestones: the profession of First Vows and Perpetual or Final Vows. First Profession culminates the first four years of a young woman’s vocational journey to become a Salesian Sister. Sr. Natasha Roig and Sr. Anne Weis professed their First Vows in the presence of the Salesian Provincial Superior, Fr. Timothy Zak, SDB, in St. Anthony’s Church in Hawthorne, NJ. In addition to a limited number of guests in person, the liturgies were live streamed on the Salesian Sisters’ Facebook channel. Reflecting on the moment, Sr. Natasha said, “I am so happy that God has called me to be a Salesian Sister! To me, making my First Profession means I am Jesus’ beloved spouse and my life is now dedicated to inviting all of God’s children to the wedding feast of Heaven!” Sr. Anne shared, “It was an overwhelmingly beautiful experience to profess my vows before my Sisters, family, and friends, knowing that it was God’s grace that made it possible for me to stand there and to now live this consecration.”

From left, Sr. Christina Chong, Sr. Lillian Foxx, Sr. Hae-Jin Lim, and Sr. Myriam Meus. The Sisters prostrate themselves before the altar during the Litany of Saints. This ancient posture shows the gift of their lives to God as well as prayer for their perseverance.

Our joy continued in the afternoon when four Salesian Sisters professed their Final Vows in the presence of Bishop Kevin Sweeney of the Diocese of Paterson. Final Vows are typically made after a Sister has professed temporary vows for six to 10 years. This marks their permanent commitment to God as they give their lives forever to Him for the salvation of young people. The four making their final vows were: Sr. Christina Chong, Sr. Lillian Foxx, Sr. Hae-Jin Lim, and Sr. Myriam Meus. Above, Sr. Hae-Jin Lim and Sr. Christina Chong present the gifts of bread and wine to Bishop Sweeney. At right, Sr. Lillian Foxx signs the book on the altar after professing her vows. “Giving my life to God forever as a Salesian Sister brings me great joy and peace because I know that God is faithful and He will forever be with me,” shared Sr. Myriam. “I pray that my response to God’s loving invitation to follow in the footsteps of St. Mary Mazzarello and St. John Bosco helps the young people that I encounter to find happiness in life.” We rejoice with our Sisters and their families and thank God for the gift of their vocations! Mary Help of Christians Academy benefit, November 11

Autumn Gala will honor military service

T

he annual Autumn Gala is the most significant fundraiser for the Financial Aid Fund of Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon, NJ. We had hoped to gather together in person, but decided it was best to host an online Virtual Gala for the second year in a row. Last year’s success was a direct result of your continued commitment and faith.

Michael Losurdo

We have chosen a special day for our gala: Veterans Day: Thursday, November 11. Let’s make a difference in our students’ lives while paying tribute to the men and women in active military service and our veterans, while also remembering many who have passed. The four “Ambassadors” of our gala are not only longtime friends and supporters of the Salesian Sisters but also represent those who put their lives on the line for the freedom we all enjoy. Michael Losurdo, U.S. Army Corporal, has a granddaughter who graduated from Mary Help, Jacqueline Colangelo, class of 2015. William “Bill” McLaughlin, U.S. Army SPEC 4, has an alumna daughter, Shalini McLaughlin, class of 1996. Bill was Chairman and Trustee of the Salesian Sisters Partners Circle for many years. Catherine and Elizabeth Livi, LTJG U.S. Navy Reserve, graduated with honors from Mary

T

he Salesian Sisters Partners Circle was founded in 1991 to provide unrestricted funds for urgent needs of the Salesian Sisters and their mission. These include support for capital needs, scholarship assistance, technology upgrades, and funds for those unforeseen situations that require immediate attention (such as during the COVID-19 pandemic). Your annual contribution to this fund empowers the Sisters to continue their mission: To Provide Financial Assistance and Volunteer Services to the Salesian Sisters and to the Young People in their Care for the Advancement of Education, Vocations, and Community Life. The fire which destroyed the Chapel at Mary Help of Christians Academy in May 2018 underscored the vital importance of the Partners Circle Fund, enabling the Sisters to respond quickly in an emergency.

A

s I write to you, I find myself in Rome, Italy at the center of our Catholic Church and the headquarters of the Salesian Sisters. The purpose of my trip is to participate in our General Chapter. It is at these meetings, held every six years, that we take stock of where we are as Salesian Sisters and challenge ourselves to meet the future needs of young people in the world. As we reflect on the Scripture, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5), we ask how we can be more authentic communities that give witness to hope and joy in our world.

I am here with Sr. Michelle Geiger, principal of the Time for the Academy of Our Lady in General Chapter Marrero, LA, and 170 other participants from all over in the the world. This Chapter is especially significant Eternal City. since we will be electing a new Mother General. Our current Mother General, Mother Yvonne Reungoat, has served in this capacity for 12 years, which is the maximum number of years a Sister can fill this very demanding position (actually, Mother Yvonne has served an additional year due to the pandemic). We were fortunate enough to have Mother Yvonne visit our Province three times, the last of which was wawhen we unified the Province of Canada and the Eastern U.S. Province and became the Province of St. Joseph. In addition to our new Mother General, we will also elect a new Council to help animate our worldwide Congregation of more than 11,000 Sisters. I ask for your prayers that this may be an efficacious meeting and that, together as an Institute, we may truly be witnesses of hope and joy to the young and all those whom we serve. Be sure of my prayers as well, coming straight from Rome! – Sr. Joanne Holloman, FMA, is the Superior of the Province of St. Joseph Visit us online! www.salesiansisters.org

Provincial Treasurer, Principal, Animator

Rest in peace, Sr. Carmen Peña, FMA

T

he Salesian Sisters mourn the passing of Sr. Carmen Peña, FMA, on September 25 at the St. Joseph Provincial Center in Haledon, NJ. She was 87 years old and this year celebrated the 65th anniversary of her religious profession. Sr. Carmen was born in Saltillo, Mexico, one of four children of Genaro and Carmen Peña. She met the Salesian Sisters when she attended Excelsior Elementary School in Monterrey. “I did feel at times that our Lord wanted me to become a Sister,” she recalled. “The life of the Salesian Sisters, working with young people, attracted me.” After high school, Carmen continued her studies, enrolled in a secretarial course, and worked in an office. Yet, she admitted, “Whenever I spent time in prayer and reflection, the thought of a vocation to religious life returned. I did not have the courage to think about it, much less act on it. Jesus began to make Himself strongly felt in my life by making me feel the emptiness and transitory nature of things I cherished.” On January 31, 1953 – the Feast of St. John Bosco – Carmen spoke to a Salesian Sister in Monterrey regarding her decision to answer God’s call. She began her initial religious formation in Morelia and was accepted as a postulant in January 1954. Her period of formation began in Mexico and ended in Turin, Italy, where she was accepted into the novitiate. In 1956, Sr. Carmen professed her first vows. For two years, she remained at the International University of Turin to complete her studies. For the next 18 years, Sr. Carmen was happily involved in Salesian schools in Laredo and San Antonio, TX, first dealing with the little ones, then preparing herself to teach natural sciences. She had, in fact, received her B.A. in Biology and Chemistry from the Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. Sr. Carmen was next assigned to Elizabeth, NJ, as principal at St. Anthony School and animator of the community.

Visit us online! www.salesiansisters.org

A broadening of experiences occurred when, in 1979, Sr. Carmen became the financial administrator (treasurer) of the United States Province. It was a time of challenges and of innovations, especially when in 1987 the province split into Eastern and Western branches. Sr. Carmen was not only entrusted with differing responsibilities including that of being the Provincial Vicar, but she also programmed the finances on the computer system which gave further impetus to accuracy, efficiency, and thoroughness. Sr. Carmen was also present when the Salesian Sisters Partners Circle was founded, playing an active role. After 12 years Sr. Carmen was sent to the Sacred Heart Center in Newton, NJ, as animator and treasurer. In subsequent years, she continued to assume the role of animator in several houses of the Eastern Province in New Jersey, Florida, and Louisiana. Earlier this year, due to health reasons, Sr. Carmen left St. Mary Mazzarello Convent in Naples, FL, to live in the St. Joseph Provincial Center. Sr. Carmen was a figure of wisdom and exemplified the presence of Mary among us. She gave us an example of great generosity. She was persevering, practical and farsighted in her work and decisions. She saw the needs of the Sisters and provided with delicacy and affection. Her spirit of sacrifice and self-giving was rooted in her deep faith, in the love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, Mary Help of Christians, and St. Joseph to whom she entrusted the needs of the Province. On the occasion of her 65th jubilee, Sr. Carmen said, “Being a Salesian Sister has not dulled the thrill of those first years of hearing and answering God’s call. Though I cannot count the number of friends I have encountered in my various roles of service, I can only thank God, my own family, and my Salesian family, for having entrusted to me St. John Bosco’s special love for the Blessed Mother and for youth.” May she rest in peace. Here Sr. Providence Favaloro (d. 1995) and Sr. Adeline Salvetti (d. 1988) shed tears as they walk through the remains of the Sowerbutt House, which served as the Sacred Heart Novitiate, Chapel, and Salesian College. It was torn down in preparation for the new St. Joseph’s Chapel, which was consecrated in 1976. Construction of our new Chapel on the same site is well under way (see page 3).

ho’s got game? Look no further than Trinity Baptiste. The star forward for the Wildcats of the University of Arizona led her team to the 2021 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, losing by just one point to the Stanford Cardinals. It’s no surprise that Trinity was then drafted by the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) to play professionally for the Indiana Fever. Trinity is a proud alumna of the Joe & Anne Garcia Salesian Youth Center/ Boys & Girls Club in Tampa, FL, where she could be seen dribbling a ball from an early age. Now age 23 and six feet tall, Trinity spoke with Partners in Giving about her formative years and her exciting career.

Did you play much basketball at the SYC? I played all different sports: basketball, flag football, baseball, and kickball. The funny thing is, I was the only girl who ever wanted to play basketball. I loved everything at the SYC. We did arts & crafts, went on field trips during the summer, learned a lot, and even played competitive sports against other Boys & Girls Clubs. If I am blessed to have kids one day and live in Tampa, my kids will definitely go to the SYC. We always had people looking out for us. They were like our parents away from home! SALESIAN SCHOOLS ! VILLA MADONNA SCHOOL, Tampa, FL – A new family-friendly Christian TV series has just been launched on the web by a Villa Madonna parent, and it features Villa students! Rob Reynolds, founder of Cross Boss Media, has been working hard over the past three years on “Studio 3:16” (studio316.com), designed for children ages 7-12. Episodes follow a high-spirited Christian recording artist named Shevin (actor Shevin McCullough) who must discover how Gospel passages are relevant today so he can reconcile his own shortcomings, keep his job, and teach kids about God through his music. In the first episode, “Don’t Tell Anyone! Mark 7:31-37,” Shevin announces he’s going to keep his music a big secret. Tensions escalate between his manager and him. Shevin learns the reason why Jesus told people not to spread the news about His miracles.

Villa Madonna School students featured on Studio 3:16 include (above) eighth-grader Nicholas Edwards, and (below) eighth-grader Domenica DeMayo, alumna Ysabel Glasser, and seventh-grader Ruby Reynolds.

With production happening in Tampa, the show includes actors and singers who are Villa students. Eighteen episodes will be released online by December. “There’s a high demand – a yearning –not just for great Christian content on the web, but for really great content that is Christian,” says Rob. “Just look at the huge success of ‘The Chosen.’” Rob and his wife, Marya, have six daughters, four of whom attend Villa, and one is a proud alumna. n September 3 in Miami, FL, the ImmaculataLaSalle High School football team played a momentous game, beating local rivals Belen High School for the first time since 1987! “When religious orders were expelled from Cuba in 1961, the Jesuits and the Christian Brothers maintained an ongoing football rivalry here in Miami,” explains Sr. Eileen Tickner. “This Cuban competition goes back to 1905 when the Christian Brothers founded LaSalle High School in Cuba; the Jesuits had founded their school in 1854. The first football game between the schools in Miami was in 1965, and when Immaculata– La Salle transitioned over to the Salesians, the rivalry continued. That Immaculata–LaSalle beat Belen, on their own field, with a score of 8 to 7, was a source of great pride and joy!” Congratulations, Royal Lions!

On the Journey with Sister B

The importance of creating “Sabbath” breaks

I

recently happened upon a rest stop in northwestern Pennsylvania. It was nothing exceptional from first glance, just some parking spaces and vending machines, but it seemed like a good place to do some stretching after a long drive.

your own, calming your body in ways few things can. I spied many shy visitors while I sat by the cheerful creek. The local creatures seemed curiously and peacefully aware of my presence in their midst and the butterflies came out to dance and show off their wings. “This must be what God felt when He declared all of creation ‘good’ and rested,” I pondered to myself as I watched a clumsy chipmunk try to hop from stone to stone across his secret path through the creek. Indeed, everything in that moment felt good, and so it was.

I like to wander. Yes, I am naturally quiet, but my spirit is adventurous and I am ever on the lookout for something interesting to see or learn. What caught my tired glance at this rest stop was a small wooden sign that said, “Fivemile Creek Trail,” with an arrow pointing into the trees lining the picnic area. I paused and pondered. I still had a long way to drive, and I typically would not walk into an unfamiliar forest alone. But “This must be what there were enough people around, I am a tough woman, and I did need a God felt when stretch break. Desire overcame reason He declared all of and I dove into the forest. It was like entering a magical world.

creation ‘good.’”

The canopy of trees filtered the sunlight into glittering sparks dancing upon the wildflowers and fallen bark. The trail was clear, obviously used often enough to be beaten down into a path by the feet of other visitors. A small creek ran but a few yards down a slight ravine, and yes, in my Salesian white habit I descended, feeling emboldened by the tranquility there. The creek jumped and flipped over fallen trees and smoothed rocks; the water cool and full of life. Elegant lichen, emerald moss and various shades of mushroom lined the trail, with wild flowers sprinkled here and there like some fairy had thrown seeds hither and thither to make the area more decorative, just for the sheer beauty of it. I sat for a while, listening to the bird calls and the forest breathe. If you’ve ever spent time in a forest, you know it breathes; it breathes with the movement of the breeze and the swaying of the trees. Spend long enough in the forest and its breath becomes

When I finally left the forest, I felt such joy and refreshment, I marveled that not more people were intrigued and went down this path. What a relief the forest was from the long highway. What a gift those moments near the creek were. What a surprise was this “Sabbath” break.

I have often written of the importance of creating “Sabbath” moments for ourselves – time to simply step back and relax in whatever way we find refreshment. In our culture, we are driven to productivity, to the point of illness and the edges of our sanity. In six days, God made creation, declared it good, and then took a whole day to rest and enjoy it. Do we take these moments to rest and appreciate the “good” in our lives? Do we allow little Sabbaths, like this creek, to sneak up on us, and do we seize them when they come? God rested to show us it’s important to do it; that we are not made just for work. So may we all rest and be refreshed, and may the little Sabbaths during our week that sneak up on us, like Fivemile Creek, bring us new life.
