PartnershipSchoolsNetwork

Partnership Schools are communities of faith, where individuals work together for the betterment of all. Our vocation is rooted in the Gospel mandate to loveandtoeducate, andinparticular, todobothtoahigh degree of excellence. Christ insisted thatHecamesothatchildrenwillnotonlyhavelife, butthattheywill “have it in abundance” It is not enough that our students merely meet expectations and be prepared to “have life” we form their hearts and minds so our graduates are prepared to enjoy the life ofabundance

Christpromised

In order to infuse Catholic beliefs and values throughout the entire school day, we hold all students to consistent and consistently high expectations, andwemustensurethatweareteachingtherichcontentand essentialskillsthatourstudentsneedtosucceed

We believe that students flourish best when immersed in a faith-filled environment characterized by high academic expectations, caring and demanding adults, and joy To that end, each Partnership School emphasizes:

● Building a faculty of committededucatorswhoembracethemissionoftheschool, whohavedeep instructional expertise, and who unquestionably believe that all of our studentscanachieveatthe highestlevels.

● Establishing a clear school culture plan that articulates root beliefs and specifies how policies, procedures, programs, habits, actions, and routines actively communicate our root beliefs and values.

We conceive of the school culture of a Catholic school as the “ocean everything swims in” at the school teaching and learning, policies, procedures, rituals, routines, decisions, communications, artifacts, physical spaces, and the daily activity of the school are all infused with the beliefs and values of the community, and these all comprise the Catholic school culture This section of the Family Handbook provides an overview of our beliefs, values, shared purpose, and expectations related to relationships and home-schoolsupport

CoreValues

As part of our focus on school culture and character formation, thePartnershipSchoolshaveadoptedfour core values that provide the framework upon which our school culture and character formation are built Theyare:Integrity,Humility,HardWork, andService

Integrity

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching ” –Charles Marshall

Humility

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less ” –Rick Warren

Developing humility inourstudentsmeansunderstandingandappreciatingtheuniquegiftsandpotentialof every member of the community and working together to ensure that everyone works hard to achieve his/her highest potential That requires hard work, selflessness, and an appreciation for what we canlearn from everyone around us. It also implies judging ourselves not in comparison with others, but in light of our capabilities And it requires us to focus on developing our gifts not for our own personal gain, but to serveothers.

Hard Work

“I used to think that prayer changes things But now I know that prayer changes us and we change things ” –MotherTeresa

Hard work, persistence, anddeterminationareessentialtolearningandsuccess AtPartnershipSchools,we expect all students, teachers, and leaders to workhard;togive100percentofoureffort,100percentofthe time.

Service

Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee law requires Archbishop Lyke to conduct diagnostic reading assessments in grades K-3 early in the school year These assessments allow teachers to identify whether students are meeting expectations for reading at their grade level. For students who are not meeting expectations, teachers and school leaders develop an individualized plan for student growth, which may include, but not be limited to small group or individual instruction from a teacher aide or a reading intervention teacher, and/or instruction from a Title I reading tutor Monitoring of student growth willbe completedandupdatedthroughouttheschoolyear.

The Third Grade Reading Guarantee requires that third graders in all schools in Ohio to meet a specified score on the state reading test or the NWEA MAP test in order to advancetofourthgrade AtArchbishop Lyke Catholic School, students have multiple opportunities to meet or exceed this score, which is set annually by the state department ofeducation, onthestatetestandtheNWEAMAPtest Studentsingrade 3 might also take, if determined by teachers, other alternative assessments for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee

Retention from/Promotion to Next Grade

Very few decisions we make about children are more important than recommendations to promote or to retain a student BecausestudentsofvaryinglevelsofachievementareacceptedtoPartnershipSchools,we base retention decisions on student growth, rather than absolute performance Tothatend, studentswillbe retained if they fail to demonstrate at least one year of growth as measured by interim and curricular assessments in grades1-8 Retentiondecisionswillalsotakeintoaccountoverallconductasrepresentedon thereportcard.

If a student is being considered for retention, teachers must begin discussing this possibility early in the school year with the principal Parent conferences must be held periodically, and notification of the possibilityofretentionmustbemadewithwrittennotationonthereportcard.

Our Approach

Teacher set expectations for behavior in their classroomsandholdstudentsaccountableforadheringtothe rituals, routines, and procedures of the daily life of the school day When students do not meet these

21

expectations, disciplinary situations typically minor and easily redirected or corrected arise Teachers handle disciplinary situations with students directly for most classroom disruptions (ie, not coming prepared to class; not being in the complete schooluniform;notcompletingassignedhomework;speaking out in class, being off-task, minor verbal disputes with other classmates; etc) If a situation escalates, teachers will notify parents of classroom problemsandaskforhelptoensurethatinappropriatebehavioris modified

We encourage teachers to use the least invasive interventions to redirect student behavior to refocus on learning as much as possible. When students do not meet classroom behavior expectations, teachers and students are encouraged to consider the situation with a growth mindset, and the consequences should be considered opportunities to learn and grow and should be appropriate to the situation. We believe every minute matters, and student learning is our priority, so students are sent out of class as a result of not meetingbehaviorexpectationsonlyasalastresort.

School leaders will consider each case individually to determine how best to respond to support the student’sgrowthandthecapacityfortherestoftheclasstolearn

Progressive Approach

We employ a progressive discipline system which allows students who do not meet expectations for behavior in minor ways to learn from mistakes, shift course, and avoid severe sanctions. Repeated violations incur increasinglysevereconsequences, whicheventuallymayincursuspensionfromschoolora requesttowithdrawfromtheschoolcommunity.

In all in-class behavior situations, the goal is to return all students to learning as quickly as possible. Teachers will employtheleastinvasiveinterventionwheneverpossibletoredirectin-classbehaviorbackto student learning. A teacher may first approach a student a non-verbal cue, and then offer a private verbal warning Public verbal warnings may be followed by consequences such as loss of minor privileges –portions of recess, for example As situations progress, teachers may call home later in the day, issue an after-school detention, and eventually, if needed to resume teaching and learning, refer the student to the principal Parentconferencesmayberequestedinseriouscases

Teachers are never permitted to use corporal punishment with any child Perceived acts of corporal punishmentshouldbereportedtotheprincipaloftheschoolimmediatelybystudentsand/orparents

Consequences & Processes

Most behavior incidents are handled in the classroom, by teachers, according to procedures, policies, and expectations established by the classroom teacher There are, however, some school-wide procedures, policies, and expectations to help all of our students learn to meet expectationsandgrowwhentheymake mistakes

Students are expected to meet the expectations for behavior of their classroom teacher and other expectationsthroughouttheschoolday.Theseexpectationsincludebutarenotlimitedto:

Behavior Contracts

To support students who struggle chronically to meet behavior expectations, school leaders and teachers may develop behavior contracts The goal of a behavior contract is to create aclearplanforimprovement and to provide students with support to build healthy habits to fully participate in and contribute to our learningcommunity

If the behavior contract is not successful, it may lead to suspension or separation from the school Some actions, includingbutnotlimitedto, fightingorthreats, maywarrantimmediatebehaviorcontracts.

Suspension or expulsion

Removingastudentfromtheclassroom, eithertemporarilyorpermanently, isreservedforcasesthatcannot be addressed better in any another way In some cases (see “Serious Breaches of Community” below), school leaders may deem an action by a student so disruptive to the community that the only way forthe child and the school community to flourish is for both to separate via expulsion Thisdecisionistheright and responsibility of school leaders. In other cases, school leaders may determine that a temporary suspension from school is appropriate to provide time for healing orreflection Inthecaseofsuspensions, students may make up quizzes, tests andprojectsuponreturningtoschool Classworkandhomeworkmust beturnedinthedaythestudentreturns

Family/CustodialSituations

Archbishop Lyke School serves a number of children experiencing transitions in parental custodial relationships For this reason, it is necessary to clarify and restate the usual procedures followed by the administrationandfacultywhenworkingwithparentsinsuchsituations.

In two-parent families it is assumed that both parents are living at the same address unless we have been notified otherwise Archbishop Lyke School personnel will, therefore, send home notices, communications, etc, withthechild Itisassumedthatbothparentsarecommunicatingregardingthechild and that all information is shared byandbetweentheparents Thisinformationincludes, butisnotlimited to, conference appointments, report cards, mid-quarters, discussions with school personnel, and tuition statements

In families experiencingseparationofparents, orpendingdivorce, theaboveinformationwillbesenthome with the child to whichever parent currently has care of the child It is assumed that this information is shared by the parents and between the parents. Since this situation frequently impacts on a child’s achievement and interactions at school, parents are askedtoinformtheprincipalandteacherofthisfactso that appropriate support can be given tothechild. Unless restricted by Court Order, any non-custodial parent has the right to attend any school activity of theirchild, whichincludessportsactivitiesandclassprograms. Parentsshouldkeepeachotherinformedas to these activities to avoid duplication of communications and to allow the school to better attend to the dutyofteachingtheirchildren.

In cases of “joint custody” (shared parenting agreements) entitlingbothparentsaccesstoschoolpersonnel and activities, it is assumed that one copy of communications and information will be sent homewiththe childandthatthiswillbesharedbyandbetweentheparents.

Regardingparentconferencesinallcustodysituations: itispreferredandwillbethegeneralprocedurethat one conference appointment be scheduled “jointly” if both parents wish to be present It is assumed that parents are able to set aside their differences and to cometogetheronbehalfoftheirchildforthistime. In cases where joint conferences are clearly neither possible nordesirablebyallpartiesinvolved, alternate arrangements may be discussed with the principal, subject to the approval of both parents, and further reviewed by Archbishop Lyke School’s legal counsel.
