.
Parrots on door frames: The parrots are a case in point. First, I asked the house owners about the parrot design. Invariably they said that the parrots represent the harmony between the family members. I wish to add that there is a possibili ty that the community would identify itself with the parrot. The train of thought could have been that their nature was similar to that of this bird, or they thought it was a threat to them because parrots eat paddy. By identifying themselves with the parrot possible harm caused by the parrot would be controlled. There is a remarkable correspondence between the Bunts as cultivators settling in a place with strong residence and parrots who also build a strong nest. A similar structural explanation is given by Brouwer (2021) where he discusses the case of the Kodavas who were hunters and food gatherers originally and who had travelled for a long time before settling in Kodagu. Even after settling they practiced hunting for a long time and did not believe in making a permanent residence just like how a peacock does not build a proper nest for laying its eggs. They identify themselves with peacocks which idea can be seen in the iconography of their dagger that the Kodava groom wears on his waist during the wedding. Also, the married women wear a’ pathak’ (which is not a ’tali’/nuptial thread) that has a cobra hood not only as a fertility symbol, but also to ward off snakes. One can find the earliest examples of birds placed in the centre of door frames in the temples of Guptha em pire during 4-6 th century and the birds were referred to as ‘magalya vihaga’.
Description of the images based on my research during Dissertation: Pillars and nomenclature of various parts: There are two kinds of pillars that are prominent in the Bunts community in and around Mangalore.
Type 1: One which is square in shape. The various parts of this pillar (from base to top) include; (i) ‘Padhuke’, the base (ii)’ Jagathi’, square in shape and is the lower half of the pillar (iii)’ Vajana’, is the part above ‘jagathi’ which is octagonal in shape (iv) ‘Dala’, it is located after ‘vajana’ (v) ‘Melina vajana’ (vi) ‘Prathi’/’bodige’, is the capital of the pillar.
Type 2: One which is bulbous. The various parts of the pillar include: (i)’ Padhuke’, the base (ii) The main bulbous body (iii) ‘Dala’ (can have two dala’s sometimes) (iv) ‘Melina vajana’ (not always present) (v) ‘Prathi’/’bodige’, is the capital of the pillar The base (padhuke) is usually has simple design while the lower half of the pillar (jagathi) has no carving on it except for a small portion at upper end where the octagonal part (vajana) starts. This portion usually has patterns of knitted mat enclosed with the design of a chain (sankale) or a flower petal or foliage (esal) design or, some cases, just has simple lines running around it. The ‘vajana’ has pointed corners where it intersects with ‘jagathi’.These can be simple or sometimes ornamented on the borders. The ‘jagathi’ can be plain or it is extensively carved with flutes and more intricate designs displayed on the base and top of the flutes, usually the top of the flute has arches combined with intricate floral design. In general the ‘dala’ is simple, but sometimes it has a pear necklace (manisara) carved around it. ‘Melina vajana’ has inverted pointed corners and is simple or has a floral design all around it, or just consists only of plain lines. Usually the ‘prathi’ is the head of ‘makhara’ stretching its tongue out, but sometimes it is hypotenuse that is triangular in shape with curves running through it. The tongue is usually extensively carved with a floral design (esal), but sometimes it shows some animals
