The LAX A-Team Coaches Celebrate Years of Success Recently, Tim Flynn, Head Lacrosse Coach at Mountain Lakes High School was selected as the 2019 New Jersey Lacrosse Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High Schools and the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association. This honor is among a long list of accolades and awards that Coach Flynn has garnered in his 41 year career at Mountain Lakes. When we sat down with the only Coach that Lakers Lacrosse has ever had, he insisted that this award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of his players, the parents and the Mountain Lakes Lacrosse Community. Flynn specifically pointed to his high school staff as a group that deserves credit for the program’s achievements. The Lacrosse Coaching staff is comprised of extremely dedicated, loyal, caring and talented educators. Mark Walters, Steve Feltmann, Ken White, Nick Lane, Clint McDounough and Mike Kirwan bring a ton of experience and expertise to mold the players and teams for Mountain Lakes Lacrosse. Combined with Flynn, they have over 170 years of coaching experience! When asked about his staff, Flynn stated, “Our coaching staff is a huge

The LAX A-Team Coaches Celebrate Years of Success fact that his father, John, brought the fledgling club program to Varsity status in 1979. John (a former All-American at Dartmouth College) ran the all important youth program for over 25 years. Mark recalls that his childhood home’s basement in Mountain Lakes was the “lacrosse shop” for the town. Lacrosse players would come for needed equipment and just to hang out. Mark started playing in 6th grade and was a member of the first year varsity team in 1980. A starting attackman as a sophomore, Mark helped the first year team win the “B” division state championship in the program’s first year!

Ken White, who has been a freshman and Junior Varsity coach at ML for 33 years and has an 83% winning percentage. (Bill Belichick’s winning percentage stands at 68%) Ken states, “We are more than just coaches, we are family. We have watched each other’s children be born and grow up.” White adds,”Coaching at Mountain Lakes is a full time job because we look after each player’s development both on the field and off. It’s great to watch them grow as players and individuals.” Flynn’s says of Coach White, “Ken is the consummate coach, he has his own way of doing things that is very demanding, but fair. Ken cares very deeply for the kids AND the program and has helped maintain a high level of LAKER PRIDE!” Coach White has decided to retire to spend more time with his family and grandkids. Ken will be taking his wife, Cheryl on vacation during spring break for the first time in 33 years!

Mark went on to be a three year letter winner and was named first team all-state his senior year. Coach Walters then went to play attack at Ohio Wesleyan University. Walters says, “I love working with players of all ages and want to give back what I learned when I (Continued on Page 12)

Mark Walters, the varsity offensive coordinator, points out three attributes that “guide our program’s success” 1) Hard Work-on and off the field. 2) Commitment-being fully dedicated. 3) Family-trusting one another and playing for one another. Walters has considerable experience as a lacrosse coach. He was the Head Coach at Randolph High School before returning to his hometown to teach and Coach. was younger. I teach the kids to work hard and to understand what being a team player is all about.” Coach Walters is the varsity team’s offensive coordinator and also is the Head Varsity Soccer Coach. The 2020 Mountain Lakes High School Lacrosse team enters the spring as defending Tournament of Champion winners. Steve Feltmann, The Varsity Defensive coordinator and Goalie coach, says that the team is “preparing like any other year.” Feltmann was an All-American goalie at Cortland State in upstate New York. He has developed several High School All-American Goalies over his 16 year tenure. Feltmann was an All-State Goalie for West Morris Central before college and remembered that Mountain Lakes “was always the team to beat.” Steve is an outstanding teacher and coach and relates to his charges both on and off the field. Flynn says that the players “love to play hard for Steve and have complete respect for his coaching abilities. Having someone of Steve’s talent handling our goalies and defense has been a tremendous boon to our program.” 12 l Tri-Town Focus Magazine

The tradition and the culture for the sport of lacrosse is deeply imbedded in the community. Nick Lane has been a part of that culture since his days in the youth program and served as Varsity Captain in 2001. Nick then played at Bucknell where he also served as Team Captain. Nick coaches both Football and Lacrosse at Mountain Lakes. Flynn states that “in Nick’s 15 years of coaching lacrosse here, no one has shown more loyalty to the program, other coaches, and kids. He will do whatever is needed to help the team. Nick is passionate for the sport and projects the tradition and culture because he lived it.” Lane says “I chose to coach because it’s a way to keep the feeling I got when I played alive. Coaching these kids is great because they want to continue to be the best and strive to keep the tradition and pride of ML Lax going.” Flynn says, “ Nick has his finger on the pulse of what is going on with the team.” Lane serves as a varsity assistant running the faceoff units and also serves as the JV Co-Head Coach. Like Lane, Clint Mcdounough grew up playing lacrosse in Mountain Lakes, graduating in 2006.

Clint continued his career at New England College where he was a standout attackman and team Captain. He joined Flynn’s staff 5 years ago as a Varsity assistant and JV Co-Head Coach. McDounough recalls receiving a call from Coach Flynn while coaching at Chatham. “I happily accepted Tim’s offer to return to ML as a coach. I told Coach that this was THE CALL I’d been waiting for....I always wanted to return and coach at Lakes!” Clint continued, “Playing for Mountain Lakes Lacrosse is like a brotherhood and the experience you get is something you take with you for the rest of your life. This Community is like no other. One of the best moments of my coaching career is arriving back home after beating Delbarton in the TOC finals last year and seeing the entire community outside in the streets, at midnight, celebrating. It was amazing!”. Flynn says, “Clint brings energy, enthusiasm, smarts and a good level of toughness to his coaching. He has a great lacrosse mind and I value his opinion and ideas.” McDounough also serves as the Head Coach of the Mountain Lakes Varsity Ice Hockey Team. (At press time, his team sports a 12-1-4 record as it enters the Haas Cup Playoffs!)

and watched as the players (and parents) celebrated on the field.” Kirwan’s passion and expertise helped build Lakers lacrosse as a youth coach and upon his retirement last year, Flynn asked him to join the high school staff. Mike happily accepted. He is in charge of the riding and clearing units as well as the defensive midfielders. Kevin Pfister has been hired to be the new Freshman Head Coach to replace Ken White. Kevin has a rich lacrosse background as a player and coach. He will be assisted by Zander Kotsen (ML ‘15). Flynn says, “It takes two people to replace an ML legend like Ken White! But we are very fortunate that Kevin and Zander want to try!!” Flynn states, “Our staff is one that many college coaches would love to have. They are passionate, very dedicated, have strong values, and are very close knit. They care about the kids and the program and are committed to the values and standards that help our program compete. Mountain Lakes is lucky to have them and I am extremely fortunate to go into every year with such a strong group of professionals and some of my closest friends.”

Last but not least, the newest member of the varsity lacrosse staff is Mike Kirwan. Kirwan and Flynn played Football and Lacrosse together at Hanover Park High School in 1967-71. Kirwan states, “We were lucky that we went to a school that fielded a lacrosse team. Only 12 teams had lacrosse in New Jersey at the time. Kirwan attended Hobart College and played for legendary Coaches Dave Urick and Jerry Schmidt. (Both members of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame). In 1992, Kirwan began coaching in the Mountain Lakes Youth Program and continued for 25 years while running his own business in Livingston. He loves spreading his passion for a sport that Mike says,”is fun to practice and play”. One of his greatest thrills in lacrosse was coaching in the summer LakerFuture program with his sons Pat and Connor. They were facing a team that had defeated their team by 12 goals a few weeks earlier. “Through a lot of hard work and motivation, we were able to pull off the major upset. The moment the game ended will always stick with me as I hugged my sons 14 l Tri-Town Focus Magazine

Mountain Lakes High School Fashion Show to Benefit Team Zoey Progeria is a disease most have never heard of. The 10th Annual Mountain Lakes High School Fashion Show benefiting Team Zoey and the Progeria Research Foundation will be held on Sunday, April 19 at 5:00 p.m. at Mountain Lakes High School. ”Team Zoey” refers to the New Jersey Chapter of the Progeria Research Foundation. It is also named after Zoey Aster Penny, a ten-year-old girl who suffers from progeria. Zoey’s mother, Laura, is a 1994 graduate of Mountain Lakes High School and a founder of “Team Zoey.” Progeria is a “rapid aging” disease that causes children to die of heart disease at an average age of 14.5 years. Zoey celebrated her 10th birthday on September 20. While this is a major milestone for children, it is an even bigger one for Zoey. You see without the help of you and others, Zoey may not have many more birthdays to celebrate.

March/April 2020

Please support Team Zoey by either purchasing an ad for their program, donating a raffle item and attending the event. For additional information email klingenerk@gmail.com. All checks should be made out to THE PROGERIA RESEARCH FOUNDATION and sent to Barbara Batesko, 23 Crane Road, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046. Team Zoey is dedicated to raising money for the Progeria Research Foundation to find a cure and develop treatments for all the kids suffering from this disease; and to share with you our Zoey as she lives her life fighting progeria. US HISTORY

Remembering WWII with Local Mr. Wootton

The students in Mrs. Sarah Gillespie’s US History 2 with Mr. Wootton

The students in MLHS Mrs. Sarah Gillespie’s US History 2 class are studying World War 2 so they were excited to have her father come in as a guest speaker on the “Home Front” this week. Mr. Wootton was 7 when WWII started, so he told our students how residents from Boonton, Boonton Township, and Mountain Lakes responded. He also brought along some neat show-andtell items, including a newspaper article about how he won $5 for collecting the most waste paper (about $70 in today’s money), a ration book, and a photo of the Boonton/ Boonton Township/Mountain Lakes war rationing board, of which his grandfather (Sarah’s great-grandfather), Harry Moller, was a member. The kids asked great questions and were awesome. I don’t want to go out tonight – I’m too tired.” “I can’t seem to concentrate in school.” goes undiagnosed for months or even years. I wrote this booklet to help parents understand this condition and to help kids and young adults overcome fatigue when it may be caused by POTS or other problems with the body’s internal control systems . For more information and to download the book visit https://overcomepots.com. About the Author Dr. Nicholas Tullo is a cardiac electrophysiologist and specializes in the treatment of arrhythmias (heart rhythm disorders). He also is a regional expert in fainting (“syncope”) and created the New Jersey Center for Fainting for patients with this condition. His medical practice extends to the diagnosis and management of dysautonomia and he cares for one of the largest population of POTS patients in New Jersey. Dr. Tullo was spokesperson for a national campaign called “Take Fainting To Heart,” and has been interviewed on television and radio regarding this common condition. Dr. Nicholas Tullo

As the father of three teenagers, it seems to me like they spend way too much time in bed. Sometimes they’re doing homework, and at other times they’re on their phone or laptop either engaging in social media or flipping through internet websites or binge-watching Netflix. Such is the life of a teenager in the year 2020. But for some teenagers the magnetic attraction of their mattress is less about the comfort of lying down then it is the discomfort of standing up. Often there is a physiologic reason for young people to be so unwilling to get up and do things.

Seeing Eye Dog Named the New Jersey State Dog Lawmakers in New Jersey have made the Seeing Eye Dog the official state dog. This happened when Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law making this official, after the bill had passed unanimously in both the State Senate (37-0) and the State Assembly (73-0). The Seeing Eye Dog is a trademarked term for guide dogs trained by The Seeing Eye, which is located in Morristown.

Public programs are held every Thursday and once a month on Saturdays. The program begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes at approximately 11:45 a.m. Reservations are required. While there is no fee to visit, donations are greatly appreciated. To book a tour, please call (973) 539-4425 extension 1775 or email visit@SeeingEye.org to inquire about available dates and make a reservation.

The Seeing Eye is the oldest existing guide dog school in the world. The organization was established in 1929 and headquartered in Morris County as of 1931. Its mission is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of blind people through the use of Seeing Eye dogs. The organization breeds, raises and trains puppies to become guide dogs, while also training the blind in how to handle and care for their dogs. The Seeing Eye welcomes students, groups, and individuals to visit the campus and learn more about Seeing Eye Public Visit Program. The program includes a presentation by an instructor with a Seeing EyeÂŽ dog and a question-and-answer session with a Seeing Eye graduate.

3 Ways You Can Start Practicing Mindfulness Now By Sara Aitken

In the words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” So much of the average person’s day is performed in “autopilot.” We carry out the same routines day after day, while our minds are elsewhere, creating to-do lists, replaying conversations that occurred in the past, or imagining possibilities that may or may not happen in the future. Being mindful is turning off autopilot and quieting our thoughts in order to appreciate the present moment. Mindfulness is simply paying attention to our experience, without judgment, as it happens right now. The word mindfulness may conjure some intimidating images of sitting cross legged in silence for hours on end, but the truth is mindfulness is a simple, and accessible, life changing practice. The good news is you can start practicing mindfulness right now. You don’t need a membership or special equipment. You just decide how you’d like to start and then continue practicing. Here are three ways you can start practicing mindfulness now.

car, before walking through a doorway, before opening your mouth to speak. Observe your breath. Feel the air as it touches your nostrils, travels down your airways and fills your lungs. Notice the expansion and retraction of your body as you inhale and exhale. As you begin to practice mindfulness, you may be surprised at how difficult it can be to keep your mind focused on your physical sensations. It’s normal for your mind to wander and other thoughts of what you need to do next, or past regrets will creep in. Acknowledge those thoughts and gently bring your mind back to the physical sensations you are experiencing. As you finish this article, I invite you to pause and breathe. Allow your eyes to close, feel your rib cage expand and create room for your lungs to fill completely. Exhale audibly. If it feels good, try it again. Congratulations, you have just had a mindful moment! Sara Aitken, RCYT, is a kids yoga and mindfulness instructor and mother of three living in Mountain Lakes. Find her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/peacebeginswithyoga/ or email her at sarapfoster@gmail.com to learn about her current class offerings.

Walk Mindfully - Whether you are walking a mile to school, or just a few steps into your car, pay attention to the movement of your body and your surroundings. Notice the warmth of the sunshine on your skin, the temperature of the air, the support of the ground beneath your feet. Feel your muscles holding you up and moving you forward. Listen to birds, the wind rustling leaves, cars driving by, neighbors. Challenge yourself to notice new sights and sounds every day and as the seasons change. Transform Mindless Chores into Mindful Moments - We all spend time washing dishes, brushing our teeth, making the bed, etc. Choose one of these tasks and perform it mindfully for one week. If you are washing the dishes, listen to the water run, feel the soapy sponge in your hand and the weight of the plates. Notice the light reflecting on a clean glass. After a week, switch it up and choose a different chore. Pause and Breathe - Pause before turning on the 34 l Tri-Town Focus Magazine
