2019-2020 Junior Lakers 4th-5th Grade Girls Basketball Team

by Tim Ross The 2019-2020 Junior Lakers 4th-5th Grade Girls Basketball Team finished their season as Co-Champions of the Jersey Basketball Association Travel League with a record of 15-4. Back in November, Head Coach Tim Ross started to see what kind of team he would have for the long season ahead. “Our team was comprised of four 4th graders and eight 5th Graders. Some girls had never even played basketball before.” Coach Ross would have his hands full going into this highly competitive travel basketball league. Practicing the fundamentals was key to Ross’s approach all year.

The season did not start off great, dropping 2 of their first 3 games. However, the girls were not going to be discouraged. They soon were riding a 10 game winning streak which included a win verses West Morris, where they trailed by 6 points with under a minute left in the game. “Our pressure defense led to a turnover and we were able to get the win.” Lucy Miles came up big with a shot from 15 feet outside to seal the win. That seemed to be the theme all year long- pressure defense.

The Jr. Lakers held their opponents to an average of

14.5 points per game! “The girls knew their positions and really did a great job on “D.” This swarming defense was led by Summer Sutter, Katherine Yakovets, Gianna Bentrovato, Dylan Loucopolos, and Karly Ross.

Later In the season, in a game against Branchburg, they suffered a 1 point loss. This would be the last time the Jr. Lakers would be defeated! They used that loss as motivation. “They did not like the feeling of losing.”

As the playoffs began, the Jr. Lakers defeated Cranford in the 2nd round. In the 3rd round of the playoffs they were matched up against 16-0 Summit, the number 1 seed! FOUR overtimes later - the Jr. Lakers came out on top 39-37, in what some are calling “the greatest game ever played!”

“Wow, that was awesome! Shea Sutter carried us on her back the whole game! She hit a 3 pointer at the end of the 3rd overtime to send it to a 4th overtime where we secured the victory.” The game was broadcasted on the King James Radio station as well as Play by Play radio with interviews after the game.

On to the semi-finals! Morristown jumped out to a 15-3 halftime lead. The Jr. Lakers were down, but not out! Their pressure defense got them back in the game once again, holding Morristown to only 1 point in the 2nd half, in front of a packed house at Mountain Lakes High School. The Sutter led Jr Lakers were victorious 18-16. “The girls just kept working and never gave up… ever. That is so important to teach them at such a young age- so they can apply it throughout their lives ahead of them.”

The finals were ahead and the Jr. Lakers were ready to take on Linden. Then word hit that the Championship was to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus Outbreak. The girls were upset, but

that could not tarnish the season that we had.

The team was led all season by Shea Sutter. Shea led them team in all categories: points, assists, rebounds, and blocks. “Shea was a pleasure to coach. Just an awesome player with a great attitude. Her ability to stay calm under pressure was just awesome to watch.” Other contributors included Thalia Kline, Sophia Ritchie, Julia Saldutti, Mia Siddons, and Kelsey Dages.

“I am so proud of every girl on this team. They were at every practice and every game and continued to get better.” I want to thank all of the parents, my assistant coaches Sharon Sutter, Jeff Saldutti, and volunteer Lauren Ross. It was an awesome season!”

Fire Pit Weather Forecast, A Quarantine Favorite

Dave Curren is working from home these days, and he sure seems to be enjoying it. We’ve seen this Mountain Lakes resident forecasting with his dogs, in his living room, and outside for his “Fire Pit Forecasts” (his wife and neighbors have all made cameos, too).

He won an Emmy in April, and received it from his couch, in a t-shirt that had a baby blue tux emblazoned on it. He’s taking it all in stride, laughing and having fun, all while providing New Jerseyans their local weather forecast.

Sweet and Spicy Chicken Skewers

by Chef Theresa Navarro, Jeremiah’s Catering & Cooking Studio

INGREDIENTS 2 lb. skinless, boneless chicken breast ½ small red onion, thinly sliced 7 red Thai chiles, coarsely crushed 8 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped 1 cup Sprite or 7UP (no sprite? Use 3/4 cup lemon lime seltzer, 1 T lime juice, 1T lemon juice, 2T sugar) ½ cup soy sauce ½ cup unseasoned rice vinegar (if using seasoned cut sugar to 2T) ¼ cup sugar 1 Tbsp. black peppercorns crushed 1 Tbsp. kosher salt, plus more for seasoning chicken 6 dried shiitake mushrooms crushed

Special Equipment Mortar and pestle or food processor. 8” metal skewers or metal chopsticks or soaked wooden chopsticks or bamboo skewers.

Cut chicken into 2 inch strips. Freeze chicken on a baking sheet until very firm around the edges, 45–60 minutes. Remove chicken from freezer and slice as thinly as possible.

• Meanwhile, combine onion, chiles, garlic, Sprite, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, crushed peppercorns, and 1 Tbsp. salt in a large resealable plastic bag. Grind mushrooms in spice mill or with mortar and pestle to a powder; whisk into marinade. Add chicken a few pieces at a time, coating well so they don’t stick together and can evenly absorb marinade.

Cover and chill 6–8 hours.

• Prepare a grill for medium-high heat. Remove chicken from marinade and thread onto skewers. Transfer marinade to a small saucepan and bring to a rolling boil on the grill. Cook one minute, skimming off any foam that rises to the surface. Move to a cooler part of the grill.

• Season chicken lightly with salt and grill, undisturbed, until well browned, about two minutes. Turn and baste with marinade. Continue to grill, turning and basting every minute, until cooked through and browned all over, about four minutes longer.

Retail Evolution in a Covid World

Things are evolving in Boonton! Though the Covid Virus has required many businesses to close their doors to the public it has offered opportunities for many to explore, revitalize and reinvent themselves.

Time’s Tin Cup Vintage has used this challenge to expand visibility virtually. The lovely brick and mortar shop in Historic Boonton has offered a unique, nostalgic vintage experience for people to adventure through. Recreating this for folks online has been a fun process for Laurel Durenberger the shop’s owner.

For those who know Laurel and visit her in the shop understand her love of conversation. She has utilized this joy in creating a weekly Facebook LIVE presentation on her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TimesTinCup/ In her weekly shopping LIVE, she features thematic adventures. Most recently her sessions have offered themes such as Gardening items for Earth Day, Farmhouse Country Vintage and Virtual Bake Sale offering vintage items for the kitchen. This Friday the theme will be glass: Milk, Carnival, Fenton, Crackle and more.

This shop is packed and while customers view the items Laurel is featuring many have been able to request pricing for items that they have seen in the background. Through the process of commenting below the Live session viewers can reserve items and pay via Venmo. Items can be picked up with contactless curbside pickup in sterilized parcels.

Over the next several weeks she plans on rotating inventory in the shop windows for those who are out walking by offering a truly new spin on “window shopping.”

IN MEMORIAM

A Tribute to a Mountain Lakes Legend. John von Sternberg, Jr. Longtime Mountain Lakes volunteer firefighter; realtor John F. von Sternberg Jr., 79, passed away on May 7, 2020, from complications of COVID-19. He was born April 3, 1941, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late John Sr and Jean (Jackson) von Sternberg and spent the rest of his life in Mountain Lakes.

John joined the Mountain Lakes Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 18, holding many titles, including chief in 1976 and 1977, and was proudly serving as president for the last year. In 2017, John received the Lifetime Community Service Award for 60 years of service.

In 1963, John joined the National Guard. John was a member of two motorcycle clubs, Knights of Fire and Old Coots on Scoots and rode his motorcycle every chance he could.

John’s real estate career began as an agent for the Becker family in the early 70s, then as part owner of Klintrip Beirle, transitioning to Schlott in 1980, and Coldwell Banker in 1991, where he was a regional vice president and a manager of the Mountain Lakes office when he retired in 2018.

John was named Citizen of the Year for Mountain Lakes in 1995, by the Kiwanis Club.

In 2003, he earned the Eagle Award for 35 years of business service to the Mountain Lakes community.

The Mountain Lakes Volunteer Fire Department escorted John down the Boulevard to the fire house one last time on Thursday, May 14.

This Isn’t Your Grandparent’s Pickleball Once relegated to retirement communities, pickleball has become the fastest growing sport in America. People of all ages are enjoying this fast-paced game which combines the skills of badminton, ping pong and tennis. Played with a paddle and whiffle ball, four pickleball courts can fit inside a regulation tennis court. Quirky rules and scoring add to its uniqueness.

One aspect that cannot be overlooked is how easy it is to “get into a game” Many facilities have drop in times which means just that. Bring your paddle, drop in, and start playing. With four to a court, this creates a very social environment, fostering friendships (as well as a little competition). If you’ve never played or don’t know the rules, someone is always happy to teach you. Local clubs have reasonable fees ranging from $5 to $15 for an average of 3 hours of play.

Many municipalities have converted their tennis courts for seasonal outdoor play and YMCA’s are adding it to their schedules.

Although details vary, the sport is said to have started in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, when the bored children of the Pritchard and Bell families were given a ball, a net and told to “go play” (remember those days?). Soon the adults joined in and the whole family spent the summer developing and playing the game. Paddles were added, nets were lowered, lines were drawn.

Today there are official rule books, and professional circuits for different ages and levels — complete with prize money and sponsorships.

Oh, and about that name. One story attribute it to the family dog, Pickles, who kept stealing the ball. Or this one attributed to Joan Pritchard: “the combination of different sports reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.”

John Paul Wyciskala IV Graduates University of Mississippi The University of Mississippi celebrated more than 5,400 candidates for graduation in the Class of 2020 during a live, virtual celebratory event on May 9, 2020. John Paul Wyciskala IV, of Mountain Lakes, is a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree. Wyciskala IV is a Political Science major in the College of Liberal Arts.

“While we aren’t able to gather in the Grove and at other beautiful venues on our campus right now for traditional pomp and circumstance, we could not let our originally scheduled Commencement day pass without recognizing the incredible achievements, character and spirit of this class of graduates,” said Chancellor Glenn F. Boyce.

UM leaders continue to evaluate plans to hold an in-person Commencement ceremony at a later date. “The university remains committed to doing all it can to honor our graduates in person when it is safe for us to come together as a university community,” Boyce said. The virtual event will begin at noon CDT and can be viewed at www.olemiss.edu.

As part of the virtual celebration, students including December 2019 graduates, and May and August 2020 candidates for graduation - received an official cap and tassel from the university, along with other celebratory items.

university and is ranked among the nation’s fastest-growing institutions. Boonton Main Street Relief Fund

Boonton Main Street, Inc. has launched a special relief fund to support the small businesses that make up Boonton’s dynamic Main Street economic center.

This microgrant program, funded by donations, will provide financial relief for the many small Main Street businesses crippled by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to promoting the program and assisting with fundraising, Boonton Main Street, Inc. (BMS), with its 501(c)(3) charitable status, will receive donations and, at the direction of an impartial sub-committee, disperse funds to qualified small businesses that make up our historic shopping district. If having a viable Main Street is important to you, this is another of many opportunities to help during these unprecedented times.

The first gift to this fund is from personal contributions made by the BMS board members 24 l Tri-Town Focus Magazine

in the amount of $1000. It is BMS, Inc.’s hope that individuals and organizations will join in supporting the local small business community that makes Boonton a unique economic center within Morris County. All donors will be listed on our social media outlets, and all donations at or above $1000 will be commemorated on a placard prominently displayed on Main Street.

Moutain Lakes LAX Food Drive

by Tim Flynn The Mountain Lakes High School Boys Lacrosse hosted a FOOD DRIVE for the Boonton Food Pantry at the Reformed Church of Boonton.

The senior Captains delivered three large loads of food items donated by the Tri-Town families.

It was a lot of food!!!

Pastor Leah from the church was very appreciative and said that a good amount of cash donations had also been made. “We are all feeling the sting of the cancellation of our season.
