The support and enthusiasm we’ve received so far have been overwhelming, and we are excited to be a part of this wonderful community.”

Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Stargell once said “I love September especially when we’re in it.” How true this simple sentiment is as we leave the dog days of summer behind. We are reminded of that September feeling back when we were students getting ready for our first day of the new school year and the endless possibilities that came with it. January may have been the start of the actual new year but we all knew the real new year started with the beginning of school in September. Perhaps this sense of new beginnings stems from our back-to-school mentality but September always seems like the time to set new goals and start working towards them.
September is a favorite month for many people. As the weather starts to cool down and the leaves begin to change color the world transforms into pumpkin everything! There are pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin breads and pumpkin muffins. There is no shortage

of delicious treats to indulge in including pumpkin pie. All the amazing comfort foods like stews and soups are back as we once again prepare for the autumn chill.
Perhaps though, what I love most about September is the sense of community it brings. It’s a time that makes people feel more connected to those around them as they gather for fall festivals, harvest fairs and local football games. Parsippany is known for many events throughout the year but I think one of the most beloved of all is our Fall Festival. Due to the highly anticipated beautification and revitalization Streetscape Project that is currently ongoing for downtown, this year our Fall Festival will be held on Sunday, September 15th from Noon to 5:00 PM at Smith Field Park. You can look forward to all the same vendors, delicious food options and entertainment just
at a different location. Also, our Farmers Market is still going strong until October 25th. If you haven’t been yet, make sure to stop by and pick up your favorite fall treats.
September is also a time for remembrance. We will never forget the tragic events that unfolded on the morning of September 11, 2001. We will never forget those Americans that had their lives taken away so tragically. There are many 9/11 survivors today that are still living with the repercussions from that horrific day. No one can deny that there is a resilience in the American people that transcended the evilness that was inflicted that day. Once again in the spirit of community and helping others, Americans came together to provide support and strength when it was most needed. The American patriotic spirit reigned supreme and united us as we all grieved for America’s losses that day. I encourage you to join me at our 9/11 Memorial Remembrance Ceremony on September 11th at 8:30 AM at Town Hall as we gather together once again with that same sense of community and patriotism to remember and never forget those that we lost.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our community hosted events this fall and I would like to wish all of our students a fun and exciting new school year.

Message from Superintendent Dr. Robert S. Sutter
Dear Parsippany-
Troy Hills Township
Community Members
I hope this article finds you well and in the midst of a lovely summer reprieve. With September fast approaching, it is with great pleasure that I welcome our students and staff back to another school year. For those new to the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District, let me take this opportunity to welcome you to our “District Family.”
If I were asked to use two words to describe how I feel entering my second year as the Superintendent of the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District (PTHSD), those words would be “grateful and excited.”
I am grateful to work with a district staff that is intelligent, compassionate, and dedicated to the success of our students. Our staff consistently develops creative lessons, quality programs, and positive opportunities for students to gain valuable learning experiences. Witnessing our students engaging in these activities daily would make anyone grateful (and proud)!
I am excited to continue building off the success our district experienced during the 2023-2024 school year. More specifically, we will continue the third year of our district’s five-year Strategic Plan (https://www.pthsd.k12.nj.us/ page/goalsstrategic-plan), which
Dr. Robert S. Sutter
demonstrates our continued commitment to wellness and deeper learning opportunities. Over the past three years, we have worked to create “studentcentered opportunities that require active student engagement and the authentic connection to real life experiences.” These include expanding our senior internship program; developing additional secondary pathways; creating valuable student leadership opportunities; and investigating and implementing strategies to encourage deeper and more visible thinking for our students. In addition, we have continued to address social emotional wellness and physical health through additional parent nights; school transition programs; service opportunities for students and staff; student advisory and morning meetings; and new courses to address 21st century skills with our sixth-grade students.
Message from Dr. Robert S. Sutter
Finally, I am happy to report that “Phase I” of the “Littleton addition construction project” is nearing the finish line. I truly cannot say enough good things about our contractor, Bernard Associates. The quality of their work, their commitment to deadlines, as well as their attention to detail, has been nothing less than fantastic! I want to personally thank Ben and Scott Bernard for their professionalism.
Hapgoods: A Culinary Journey Through Mountain Lakes’ History
By Patrick Minutillo
With the remnants of Hurricane Debby impacting the area and ominous predictions of heavy rain, strong winds, flooding, and even a potential tornado right here in Morris County, what better thing to do than gather a few friends and head off for lunch at one of the County’s many beautiful restaurants.
On this day, we headed out to the serene and historically significant little town of Mountain Lakes to visit Hapgoods, a popular American eatery nestled in the heart of the community next to the local train station, built in 1912 by the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad (DL&W). Mountain Lakes is noted on both the New Jersey and National Registry of Historic Places and a lot of that has to do with the 1910 Art and Crafty, European architecturally influenced homes, also built in 1912 by developer Herbert J. Hapgood, along with engineer Lewis Van Duyne, of which the now refurbished Hapgoods restaurant still stands as an impressive remnant of that era.
Hapgoods was opened in 2020 by brothers Bill and Dante Corvelli. It is still owned and operated as a familyowned venture by Bill and his wife, Lisa. Before 2020, and since 2005, it was the site of the Mountain Lakes Market, a local eatery where locals could grab a meal and buy staples like milk and eggs. A retired local police officer informed me that the building
housed everything from shops to classrooms before that. Originally a BYO establishment, the Corvelli’s have since acquired a liquor license, so feel free to order a cold bottle of beer, a glass of wine, or your favorite cocktail to complement your meal.
Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to discuss the restaurant with the owners on this visit. Still, on their website, the restaurant is described thus: “At Hapgood’s, we offer our guests all the comfort of a casual breakfast, lunch, and dinner experience with a modern twist. Located in historic Mountain Lakes, our guests feel at home in our cozy, small-town setting.” Based on our visit, I would have to say that is a pretty fair description.
On entry, we encountered a vibrant, open, airy, bustling, bright, spacious yet cozy, comfortable setting. The room was filled with a lively assortment of families and groups eating, chatting, and having an enjoyable time. We were immediately welcomed by Fernanda, who would serve as our very personable and pleasant hostess and

server throughout our visit. We were ushered to an adequately sized pair of wooden tables in a highly comfortable nook at the room’s far corner. This perfect location allowed me to take in all the architecture and history of this storied setting.
As we perused the fairly extensive lunch menu, I could also take in the full décor of the dining area. The restaurant has been artfully transformed into a more modern appearance while retaining much of its historic character. The hardwood floors, archways that separate the restaurant into two sections, exposed beams, ornate woodwork, high ceiling, oversized exterior windows, ceiling fans, a plush sofa facing a working fireplace, and drop lighting give the space a rustic yet refined atmosphere. A warm ambient glow over the carefully placed wooden tables and chairs reflects an eclectic mix of styles—from mid-century modern to classic café aesthetics. You still have the sense that you are sitting in some family’s living room from days gone
by. There’s a smaller private section that would easily accommodate a small private party or business meeting and countertop seating where you can work on your laptop or catch up on your email while having a casual meal.
The lunch menu includes much of your usual American/Comfort Food café choices, complete with appetizers,
salads, soup, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and deli specialties. As our group often does, we ordered a square pizza to share, but sadly, the pizza was only available on the dinner menu. Yes, they have three different menus: breakfast, lunch, and dinner—all offering a tempting selection of many of your classic dishes, along with some interesting and unique options. Breakfast includes such choices as Steak and Egg Benedict, Shrimp and Grits, Huevos Rancheros, various omelets with some very cool names, griddle options such as Banana Pecan Pancakes and Chicken and Waffles, along with many more mouthwatering items that make it difficult, but fun, to decide. You will find Burrata Bruschetta, N.Y. Strip Steak, Beer Batter Fish Tacos, Short Ribs, and many other delicacies on the dinner menu, along with burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, and that previously mentioned Square Pizza (which comes with a variety of your choice of toppings). It’s pretty much something to satisfy anyone’s appetite.
Our selections for lunch started with

It’s Back to School Time: Kiwanis Club Distributes Essential Supplies
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany recently donated school supplies to Parsippany Human Services, located at the Parsippany Community Center on 1130 Knoll Road. These supplies, which include book bags, notebooks, pencils, binders, rulers, pens, pencil cases, folders, and other essential items such as glue sticks, scissors, markers, highlighters, erasers, index cards, and loose-leaf paper, will be distributed to families with children in need. This initiative aims to ensure that local students are well-prepared for the upcoming school year, showcasing the Kiwanis Club’s ongoing commitment to the education and well-being of youth in the community.
Michele Picone, Director of Human Services, said, “The
end of summer means school is starting, and the holidays are approaching. Parents often panic this time of year. Knowing their costs in the next few months can be terrifying. That’s why your donation is so financially helpful. Parents know they can find the school supplies they need for their child for free, and it’s all brand new, just like what all the other kids have.”
“At Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany, we believe every child deserves the tools to succeed, and we’re proud to support our community by providing these essential school supplies. Our mission is to make a meaningful impact in the lives of local youth, and this is just one way we can help them start the school year on the right foot,” said Carol Tiesi, President of Kiwanis Club of Greater
Parsippany.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany plays a vital role in supporting local youth, sponsoring ten K-Kids clubs at various elementary schools, including Lake Parsippany, Eastlake, Intervale, Mt. Tabor, Littleton, Lake Hiawatha, Troy Hills, Northvail, Knollwood, and Rockaway Meadow. They also support two Builders Clubs at Central Middle School and Brooklawn Middle School, two Key Clubs at Parsippany Hills High School and Parsippany High School, and one Aktion Club.
Residents in need of assistance can contact Parsippany Human Services at (973) 2637163. For more information about the Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany, visit parsippanykiwanis.org.

For more than 100 years, Kiwanis International has focused on improving communities by aiding children and their families. Since 1915, Kiwanis has been an organization on the global stage with a strong community presence, where volunteers participate in hands-on activities of service, fundraising, and leadership development. From youth development to food insecurity, Kiwanis has been pivotal in tackling community issues in New Jersey since its founding. Today, there are 445,167 Kiwanis family members around the world, 7,700,000 Service hours performed by the Kiwanis family each year, 106 is the average number of kids each Kiwanian reaches and $1,134,856 granted by the Kiwanis Children’s Fund in 2023.
What is Kiwanis?
Kiwanis is a service organization that empowers people to contribute to their communities. With clubs in over eighty countries, Kiwanis operates in local communities to address the different needs of the vast communities, thus contributing to the overall good. Their motto, “Serving the Children of the World,” highlights their dedication to enhancing younger lives. Each local club reflects its community’s unique backgrounds and needs, but all chapters share the same service mission.
Kiwanis participants come from diverse backgrounds, united to make a positive impact. For instance, they lead initiatives like food drives, educational scholarships, and mentoring programs. Kiwanis also emphasizes youth management, fostering future community leaders via applications like K-Kids, Key Club, Builders Club, and Circle K.
Kiwanis in New Jersey: A Tradition of Impact
In New Jersey, Kiwanis clubs have a long history of addressing local issues and supporting community development. The New Jersey District is home to numerous clubs actively involved in initiatives such as providing scholarships, supporting local food

banks, and tackling critical challenges like youth homelessness.
The district’s leadership is crucial in guiding these efforts. The newly elected team—Martin Slezak as District Governor, Frank Cahill as Governor-Elect, Scott Wiese as Treasurer, and Helene Meissner as District Secretary—brings together a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to expanding Kiwanis’ impact across the state.
The NJ Kiwanis leadership team is committed to broadening Kiwanis’ impact, and each member brings unique strengths.
Martin Slezak’s story is one of coming full circle. Slezak’s journey with Kiwanis began in high school when he received a scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Keyport. An event that may seem small to an outsider set Slezak on a path that would eventually bring him back to lead the organization as the youngest Governor in its 108-year history, a true commitment to leadership development and what Kiwanis prides itself on.
“Taking on the role of District Governor feels deeply personal to me,” Slezak says, reflecting on his journey. As the 100th anniversary of Key Club International approaches, he feels the weight of tradition and the thrill of innovation. His leadership will focus on expanding Kiwanis’ reach using traditional and innovative methods. Particularly, Slezak hopes to aid underserved communities and tackle
issues like youth homelessness—a cause that resonates deeply with him. During the recent House of Delegates meeting, where Kiwanis clubs from across New Jersey gathered, Slezak saw overwhelming support for a two-year district project focused on youth homelessness. “With a $45,000 commitment from the New Jersey District Foundation, this project aims to raise awareness and support organizations across the state of NJ who focus on these youth days in and day out, transitioning them to live lives as healthy adults,” he says.
remembers his first meeting like yesterday. He was a young man back then, eager to find his place in the community and somewhat in awe of the seasoned members who spoke passionately about service projects. Cahill is ready to guide the New Jersey Kiwanis into a new era, as fate had it. A sudden decision didn’t mark his journey from a member to a leader; it was his steady and growing commitment to making his community a better place – whether it be one small act of kindness at a time.
“I’m motivated by the legacy of service we’ve built over the years,” Cahill says, his voice steady with determination.
His new role isn’t just a title to him—it’s a responsibility. His vision is clear: to strengthen community outreach, engage more members, and ensure that every club remains a beacon of hope and action in their neighborhoods.
It’s not just about numbers for Cahill;
and Leadership in New Jersey
it’s about impact. “We serve one child, one community at a time,” he often says, echoing the mission that drives every Kiwanis member.
District Treasurer Scott Wiese
Scott Wiese of the Kiwanis Club of Bordentown takes on the critical role of Treasurer for NJ Kiwanis, bringing a sharp financial acumen and a deep commitment to service. With a background in wealth management, he understands that financial stability is key for Kiwanis to continue its impactful work. “It’s important that we’re prudent in our spending and maximize our returns with safety in mind,” he says.
Wiese’s vision extends beyond balancing the books. He is passionate about contributing further to educational initiatives for youth, such as Kiwanis’s Service Leadership Programs, designed to nurture young leaders and service the community. “Our financial health enables us to support these vital programs and initiatives. By ensuring we manage our resources wisely, we can continue to make a meaningful impact in our communities for years to come,” he explains. For Wiese, the role of Treasurer is about more than just numbers—it’s about securing the future of Kiwanis’ mission to serve and uplift.
District Secretary Helene Meissner
For NJ Kiwanis, Helene Meissner is a name synonymous with dedication. With 35 years of service under her belt, hailing from Kiwanis of Phillipsburg, Meissner steps into the
role of District Secretary with years of experience and a heart full of passion for Kiwanis. Over the years, she has held nearly every position imaginable, from Club President to Key Club Advisor, and now, she faces one of her most significant opportunities yet.
Meissner’s journey with Kiwanis has
given her a deep understanding of the organization’s history and values. “I’ve seen the highs and lows, and while the decline in membership was disheartening, the recent infusion of younger members brings a new energy that’s incredibly exciting,” she says. Meissner recognizes that the blend of youthful innovation and her seasoned perspective is crucial to navigating the future.
Her focus as District Secretary is on membership growth and revitalizing clubs that may be struggling. Meissner is determined to reach out to long-time members and re-engage them, bringing them back into the community. “We need to remember where we’ve been to chart our path forward,” she says.
By blending traditional values with new ideas, Meissner is committed to ensuring that Kiwanis remains a vibrant and relevant force in the community, poised to serve even more children and families in the years ahead.
Looking Ahead
With this unified leadership team ready to take charge, the New Jersey District of Kiwanis is well-positioned to continue its tradition of service while embracing new challenges and opportunities. Martin Slezak’s journey, combined with the collective experience of Cahill, Wiese, and Meissner, ensures that Kiwanis will continue positively impacting the lives of children and families throughout the state. Together, they are driving the organization forward, blending tradition with innovation to meet the evolving needs of our communities.
Kevin Maass of Parsippany Entered Kutztown University
Kevin Maass joined Kutztown University as the newest member of the Golden Bear family. The semester began on Monday, August 26. As he embarks on this new chapter of his life, Kevin carries a rich legacy of achievement and involvement from his years at Parsippany Hills High School.
A 2024 Parsippany Hills High School graduate, Kevin distinguished himself as an athlete and a communityminded individual. During his high school years, Kevin was a dual-sport athlete, excelling in football and baseball. His dedication to athletics was evident on the field, where he displayed leadership, teamwork, and a strong work ethic—qualities that no doubt contributed to his success. His passion for sports extended beyond his participation; Kevin also took on the coach role, guiding young athletes in basketball at Parsippany PAL. This experience allowed him to share his knowledge and love for the game and helped him develop valuable skills in leadership and mentoring.
Kevin’s commitment to being an active and engaged individual began well before his high school years. While attending Eastlake School, he participated in K-Kids, a student-led service organization
for elementary school children affiliated with Kiwanis International, where he also served as treasurer. Through K-Kids, Kevin participated in numerous service projects, gaining an early understanding of the value of community service and collaboration in making a positive impact. This early exposure to leadership and service laid a strong foundation for Kevin, influencing his academic and extracurricular pursuits and helping to shape him into the well-rounded individual he is today.
As Kevin prepares to join Kutztown University, he looks forward to continuing his journey of growth and discovery in an environment that values excellence in academics, culture, and public engagement. Kutztown University (KU), known as the region’s center for excellence, offers a diverse and enriching academic experience, allowing Kevin to explore his interests and develop new skills. KU’s programs and reputation for quality education allow students like Kevin to discover lifelong avenues of learning and personal development.
At KU, students can select from more than 130 areas of study within four colleges, all within a diverse liberal arts academic environment.
This variety of educational offerings ensures students can find their passion and tailor their education to suit their career goals and interests. For Kevin, this means the chance to explore new subjects, challenge himself academically, and prepare for a future filled with opportunities.
In addition to its strong academic programs, Kutztown University is home to a robust NCAA Division II athletics program featuring 22 varsity sports. For someone like Kevin, who has been deeply involved in athletics throughout his life, KU’s athletics program offers the perfect balance of competition, teamwork, and personal growth. Whether he continues his athletic career or supports his peers from the sidelines, Kevin will find a welcoming and supportive community within KU’s athletics program.
Beyond academics and sports, KU provides a vibrant campus life with more than 160 student clubs and organizations. These groups offer students countless opportunities to get involved, make new friends, and pursue their interests outside the classroom. For Kevin, who has always been active and engaged, KU’s diverse extracurricular activities will allow him to continue making meaningful contributions to his community while developing new skills and interests.
Kevin Maass is excited about the journey ahead as he prepares to join the Golden Bear family at Kutztown University. With his strong foundation in academics, athletics, and community service,
Kevin is well-equipped to make the most of his time at KU. He looks forward to the opportunities that await him and is eager to contribute to the university’s vibrant and dynamic community.

Hapgoods: A Culinary Journey Through Mountain Lakes’ History

several shareable appetizers. The Buffalo Wings (16 wings with Celery, Carrots, and Blue Cheese) came out, and Nacho Fries (Pulled Pork, Jalapenos, Tomato, Green Onion, Black Beans, and Cheddar Cheese). They were quickly devoured, as usual, while we worked on our preferred entrées. I opted for the Thinly Hot Pastrami Sandwich. It came with Spicy Mustard and Swiss Cheese on toasted Rye bread. It was very tasty and satisfying, and it went well with my Miller Lite. Others in the group ordered the Steak Au Poivre (Grilled Hanger Steak, Caramelized Onion, Mushroom, and Garlic Aioli), Cobb Salad with Chicken (Romaine, Bacon, Avocado, Pear, Tomato, and Crumbled Blue Cheese with Champagne Citrus dressing), Grilled Chicken Sandwich (with Prosciutto, Fresh Mozzarella, and Arugula), and a Shrimp Bisque Soup. All the sandwiches came with house-cut fries or salad, and all the Deli Specialties had a choice of side salad, fruit, coleslaw, potato, macaroni, or pasta salad. Everyone agreed that their choices were tasty, satisfying, and
satisfying.
Rarely passing on dessert, I went with the Banana Bread Pudding (Topped with 3 Scoops of Ice Cream and Caramel Drizzle). Wow! Excellent! Other choices included the Chocolate Lava Cake (topped with a Scoop of Ice Cream and Cherry Sauce) and the New York Cheesecake (with Cherry
Sauce): a Cappuccino to cap the whole thing off and another fantastic dining experience in the books.
I would certainly recommend you stop in and enjoy this place for yourself. It has a great ambiance, a touch of history, excellent and friendly service, and delicious food. I’m sure you will not regret it.
Bon Appetit!

Adopt Sunisa: A Spirited Labrador Mix Puppy with a Bright Future
Breed: Labrador Retriever Mix
Date of Birth: April 24, 2024
Sunisa is an adorable 4-monthold female Labrador Retriever mix who is full of energy and love. She is a playful puppy eager to find a forever home where she can continue to grow and learn.
Sunisa’s lively personality shines through in her interactions with both people and other dogs. She’s currently working on her basic obedience and puppy manners, and her treatmotivated nature makes her a quick learner.
Sunisa would thrive in a home with a family ready to provide her with plenty of exercise, attention, and the training she needs to become a well-rounded adult dog.
Despite her young age, Sunisa has already shown resilience, having overcome mange and is now healthy and ready to bring joy to her new family.
Her Journey to WISE:
Sunisa came to us from a puppy mill, where overbreeding often leads to more dogs than can be sold. Dogs like Sunisa are rejected for various reasons, from birth defects to simply not meeting aesthetic standards. In many cases, unsold dogs are destroyed, which is unfortunately legal.
WISE has partnered with a group to save these unwanted dogs, offering a second chance to those who would otherwise be killed.
