With Valentine’s Day approaching, Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld was the perfect read. The novel follows Sally, a witty but cynical comedy writer, and Noah, a famous singer, as they navigate unexpected romance. While the rich details of late-night TV writing captivated me, Sally’s selfdoubt became frustrating toward the end. The slow-burn romance was refreshing, though the last chapter felt drawn out. Despite an unsatisfying conclusion, Sittenfeld’s subtle approach to love and humor makes this a great Valentine’s read, especially for singles.

“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” – the late Princess Diana
February is a short month but one that is a month of celebrations. We begin the month with the fun tradition of having a groundhog reveal how much longer winter will last.
While this may not be an exact science, we can safely say there is a 50/50 chance that the groundhog will be correct. The most significant holiday this month of course, is Valentine’s Day.
Although this is a day to remember your sweetheart, it can also be a day to mark the people in your life who especially mean something to you. Many people feel
excluded by this holiday but it doesn’t have to be that way. A simple kind gesture or act on this day can mean so much to someone who may have lost a loved one or is alone. Who says that hearts and flowers can only be given to just one special person?
The more that kindness is spread the more that joy will be present. Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to spread kindness and thoughtfulness to others. The reward will be that smile or hug you get in return.
President’s Day is also marked in the month of February. Perhaps the main reason we all love this holiday is because it gives us a day off from work or school. And if we are being honest, who doesn’t like an extra day off during the month.
All kidding aside, President’s Day is a day for us to remember all presidents past and present who have led this great nation. We may not always agree with the policies and beliefs of the person who sits in the oval office but we respect the title and the position.
We acknowledge the challenges they face and the decisions they have to make which might not be popular.
We recognize their sacrifice and dedication to the people and can appreciate the effort it takes to be the leader of the United States.
Heart Month and National Cancer Prevention Month in addition to many novelty observances such as National Bird Feeding Month and National Snack Food Month.
This month is host to numerous remembrances where you can garner historical information and learn about protecting your health.
Lastly, since this is the last full month of winter, we can finally begin to think about spring.
Along with daily celebrations there are monthly commemorations as well. February brings us Black History Month, American
As I think of spring I begin to think of all of the opportunities that will bring us all together again. In the meantime enjoy all that this month has to offer and stay safe.
The PHS-RMS Reading Buddies program is an exciting collaboration between students at Parsippany High School and students at the Rockaway Meadow School. In fact, according to Principal Cruz, “When senior Van sits down with her first grade reading buddy Luca, something magical happens. Their reading sessions are more than just older students helping younger students sound out words- they represent a carefully orchestrated educational partnership that yields benefits for both participants. This innovative cross-age reading program exemplifies how thoughtfully structured peer relationships can strengthen literacy skills across multiple grade levels.”
Now in its second year, this initiative brings together high school student leaders and our K-2 students in a dynamic partnership designed to foster a love for reading and strengthen foundational literacy skills. By pairing younger students with older mentors, the program creates
confidence. High school students model effective reading strategies and provide individualized attention, making each session impactful and meaningful.
The program focuses on a range of literacy-building activities, including read-alouds, readalongs, and interactive practice sessions with sight words, letters, sounds, and blending. These activities are carefully tailored to meet the developmental needs
of our K-2 students while also allowing high school participants to develop their leadership and communication skills.
Together, the Parsippany High mentors and Rockaway Meadow students form a unique community of learners, demonstrating the power of collaboration in education. This program not only enhances reading skills but also nurtures a sense of connection and mentorship across age groups.
Beyond the academic benefits, these partnerships foster socialemotional growth and leadership development. Younger students gain confidence as readers in a supportive environment, while older students develop patience, empathy, and mentorship skills. The program creates a culture of reading throughout the school, with buddy pairs often discussing their favorite books outside of designated reading times. This enthusiasm
for reading spreads naturally through the school community, motivating students at all levels to engage more deeply with texts.
In closing, the success of such programs hinges on thoughtful implementation. Teachers carefully match students based on reading levels and personalities, provide structured guidance on effective peer tutoring strategies, and regularly monitor interactions to ensure productive partnerships. Reading materials are carefully selected to challenge both students appropriately while remaining accessible enough to support meaningful discussion. Through this intentional approach, cross-age reading partnerships become a powerful tool for building stronger readers and more connected school communities.
Stay well, Dr. Sutter

Local actress Lauren Muraski plays the lead in the Bergen County Players (BCP) production of Rabbit Hole, a powerful drama exploring grief, resilience, and healing. The play follows a young couple struggling to navigate life after a devastating accident kills their child.
Muraski, who has previously performed at BCP, plays Becca, the grieving mother. “Becca’s character is authentic and relatable. Her pain often leaves her easily triggered, but she has a deeply rooted maternal instinct. Even through her grief, she shows strength, intelligence, introspection, and even wit,” she shared.
She also spoke about her character’s journey throughout the play. “Becca starts finding comfort and joy in small but meaningful ways—like taking a class, forming a supportive connection with a young man who also needs guidance, and rebuilding her
relationship with her husband.”
Written by David Lindsay-Abaire, Rabbit Hole won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and masterfully balances deep emotions with moments of humor. Dottie Fischer directs the BCP production from February 8 through March 1 at the Little Firehouse Theatre in Oradell.

The Parsippany Police Athletic League (PAL) has been a cornerstone of youth development, providing sports, mentorship, and enrichment programs for the community. As the organization looks toward the future, new Executive Director Nicolas Bronzino is committed to expanding opportunities, fostering inclusivity, and strengthening community partnerships. Parsippany Focus had the opportunity to interview Nicolas Bronzino, discussing his vision for PAL, upcoming initiatives, and how the organization continues to evolve to meet the needs of Parsippany’s youth and families.
Q. What inspired you to take on the role of Executive Director at Parsippany PAL?
A. My deep-rooted connection to this community inspired me to take on this role. Having lived in Parsippany for several years and serving on the board, I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact PAL has on our youth and families. I’m passionate about creating opportunities for kids to thrive and believe in the mission of PAL to provide a safe and supportive environment. This role allows me to combine my commitment to the community with my experience in leadership and program
development. I’m excited to expand our outreach, especially to underserved groups, and foster a sense of belonging for every child in Parsippany.
Q. What is your vision for the future of the Parsippany PAL?
A. My vision is centered around unity and a renewed focus on our youth. By strengthening community connections, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all children. I want PAL to offer a wide range of engaging programs and actively seek input from the youth to ensure we meet their needs. Prioritizing partnerships with local organizations will provide resources and opportunities that empower our youth, helping them build essential life skills. Ultimately, I want to create a unified community where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
Q. How do you plan to build on the existing programs and services offered by the PAL?
A. I plan to conduct a thorough assessment of our current programs to identify strengths and areas for improvement. By incorporating feedback from the community, we can ensure our programs remain relevant and engaging. I also want to
explore new initiatives like mentorship programs and workshops focusing on skills development and life readiness. Strengthening partnerships with local schools, businesses, and community organizations will help expand resources and support. Increasing outreach efforts will also ensure our services are accessible to all, especially underserved groups.
Q. What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the organization, and how do you plan to address them?
A. One of the biggest challenges is ensuring that our programs engage all segments of the community, particularly underserved populations. To address this, I plan to enhance outreach efforts by partnering with local organizations and community leaders who have established trust within these groups. Another challenge is securing consistent funding. I intend to explore grants, sponsorships, and fundraising initiatives while engaging the community in these efforts. Lastly, adapting to the changing needs and interests of our youth is crucial. Implementing regular feedback mechanisms will allow us to refine our offerings and ensure they resonate with the community.
Q. How do you plan to engage more families and residents in PAL programs?
A. I plan to enhance communication strategies by utilizing social media, community newsletters, and local events to share information about our programs. Creating familyoriented events like community days, workshops, and cultural celebrations will encourage participation. Partnering with local schools, churches, and community organizations will help us reach families directly and create a supportive network. Offering incentives like free workshops or activities can also encourage engagement. Most importantly, I believe in listening to the community and involving families in the planning process to ensure our programs meet their needs.
Q. What initiatives do you envision to foster stronger connections between the PAL and the Parsippany community?

Hosting family-oriented events like cultural fairs or sports tournaments will create a welcoming atmosphere for the community. Lastly, enhancing our volunteer programs will encourage community members to get involved, strengthening the bond between PAL and Parsippany residents.
Q. Are there specific ways you plan to increase the PAL’s outreach to underserved groups in Parsippany?

Lastly, I will establish feedback mechanisms to ensure our programs continuously evolve to meet the needs of all community members.
Q. Are there any new programs or activities you’re considering introducing to the PAL?
A. Yes! I’m excited about launching mentorship programs that connect youth with role models from various professions. I also want to offer workshops on life skills like financial literacy, cooking, and college preparation. Expanding recreational activities such as sports leagues, art, and music programs will cater to a wider range of interests. Additionally, incorporating community service initiatives will help instill a sense of responsibility and connection to the community.
Q. How do you plan to enhance the sports and recreational programs
currently offered?
A. I plan to gather feedback from participants and their families to tailor our offerings. Expanding the variety of sports and recreational activities, introducing skill-building workshops, and collaborating with local sports organizations will help improve our programs. Hosting family sports days or tournaments will encourage broader community participation. Ensuring accessibility through scholarships or sliding scale fees will also help remove financial barriers.
Q. Do you have any plans for expanding mentorship or leadership development opportunities for the youth?
A. Absolutely! I plan to establish a structured mentorship program that pairs youth with role models from various backgrounds. Leadership workshops focusing on public speaking, teamwork, and conflict resolution will equip participants with essential skills. Q. Where do you see the Parsippany PAL five years from now?
A. In five years, I envision PAL as a thriving hub for youth development and community engagement. Expanding our sports, arts, and leadership programs will cater to the diverse interests of our youth. Strengthening partnerships with businesses and organizations will provide even more opportunities. Outreach to underserved groups will ensure that every child feels welcomed and supported. I see a future where families actively participate in PAL initiatives, creating a unified and engaged community.
Q. What legacy do you hope to leave behind as the Executive Director of the PAL?
A. I hope to leave a legacy of inclusivity, empowerment, and community connection. My goal is for PAL to be a welcoming space where every child feels valued and supported. Creating programs that foster personal growth, leadership, and responsibility will ensure that our youth are prepared for the future. Strengthening the bonds between PAL, businesses, and the community will create a lasting impact. If we build a strong foundation together, Parsippany PAL will remain a vital resource for future generations.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, it felt only right to read a romance book in preparation. I read “Romantic Comedy” by Curtis Sittenfeld because it’s loosely based on the show Saturday Night Live, and I was not disappointed.
The book follows a woman in her 30s, Sally, who works as a comedy show writer. She works for a comedy show that is a fictional version of Saturday Night Live.
Sally avoids love ever since her early divorce in her 20s, and any other kind of social interaction that’s beyond her three friends/coworkers and her step-father. I enjoyed the introverted perspective as the narration through the book, and I liked how cynical she was.
I was quickly sucked into Sally’s pessimistic narration as we followed along for a week at her job. That week the host for her tv show, The Night Owls, is a famous singer. When he asks Sally to help him edit his skit draft, the reader can tell something small might be blooming between the two.
The book is broken into three large chapters, and I was completely hooked for the first two. I loved Sittenfeld’s deep description of the tv show set. The first chapter explained everything Sally did before the live performance Saturday night, and while some people might find this tedious, I really enjoyed the detail. It made me wish I was pulling all nighter after all nighter to write silly comedy sketches.
It wasn’t until the last chapter, which is about 70 pages, where I was ready for the book to end. I enjoyed Sally’s quirkiness and jittery anxiety as she navigated somewhat feelings for the TNO host, but towards the end, her quirkiness started to become overdone. I quickly went from being fond to frustrated with her character.
One of Sally’s biggest worries throughout the book is that she’s not attractive enough for Noah because he’s a famous singer known for her good looks. At first, it was relatable and understandable, but after a while all I wanted to do was tell Sally to get over herself. Her self-
sabotaging tendencies were driving me crazy.
When I finally closed the book after reading the final page, I was not as satisfied with the ending as I would’ve liked.
Overall, I liked Sittenfeld’s subtle approach for romance with the characters softly pining instead of instantly falling head over heels for each other. Despite the lackluster ending, most of the time, I found Sally endearing and Noah charming.
I recommend this book and think it’s definitely a good one for valentines day. It’s especially good if you’re single because I found it nice that the story was between two almost 40 year-olds.

Congratulations to the Parsippany PAL Middle School Ice Hockey Team on an extraordinary season, an undefeated record, and their Highland Division Championship victory!
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany proudly welcomed two new members, Parsippany residents Nicolas Bronzino and Iris Caprioni, who were officially sworn in by Club President Doreen Brennan during a
recent ceremony.
Nicolas and Iris bring a shared enthusiasm for community service and are eager to contribute to the club’s mission of improving the lives
of children and enhancing the local community. Their passion for giving back aligns seamlessly with the values of the Kiwanis organization.
President Doreen Brennan expressed her excitement, stating, “Kiwanis is something so good that each of us loves to share it. What better way to show our love for our club and community than to welcome new members? Today, we’re very pleased to welcome Nicolas and Iris to our global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child, and one community at a time.”
Iris Caprioni, a Parsippany resident for 30 years, shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I am proud at this time to become a new member of Kiwanis.”
The addition of Nicolas and Iris highlights the Kiwanis Club’s growing influence in Parsippany. Longtime members, such as Frank Cahill, continue to play a vital role in fostering the club’s growth.
Many residents may not be aware of the Parsippany Environmental Advisory Committee (PEAC), which was established in 1995 with the mission to advise the governing body and represent residents on local environmental issues. Its goal is to ensure the preservation and protection of our vital natural resources and engage in sustainability initiatives that help enhance open space, reduce flooding, improve recycling, and reduce litter, among other essential projects.
The dedicated nine-member volunteer committee has worked on numerous projects and programs over the years that have positively impacted the environment and quality of life in Parsippany. In recent years, PEAC played a crucial role in working with the township to pass the first plastic bag ban in Morris County, which laid the groundwork for New Jersey’s statewide ban. The committee has also organized several well-attended green fairs, where residents gained valuable insight into local environmental projects and sustainable living practices.
PEAC also co-hosted a library screening of the documentary “American River,” which provided an in-depth look at the Passaic
River, a vital waterway that flows through Parsippany. Recently, PEAC developed a draft tree ordinance to improve tree preservation efforts, recognizing the critical role trees play in maintaining ecological balance and air quality. Additionally, PEAC planted Parsippany’s first native plant pollinator garden on the main library grounds, creating a habitat that supports bees, butterflies, and other pollinators essential to the environment. When the garden blooms again in the spring, residents are encouraged to stop by and admire its beauty.
Looking ahead, PEAC is planning exciting events and initiatives for the coming year and invites residents
to participate in upcoming educational programs, green fairs, and sustainability projects. Staying informed and involved is key to creating a healthier environment, and residents can follow PEAC’s efforts through online media outlets and social media.
With a rapidly changing climate, public awareness, participation, and commitment are more important than ever. Supporting local environmental initiatives can make a significant difference in building a sustainable future. PEAC meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library on Halsey Street. If you are interested in learning more or getting involved, please join us!
The Heaven on Earth Cake is a luscious, no-bake dessert that combines layers of light and fluffy angel food cake with a rich and creamy filling. The cake is cubed and layered with a smooth mixture of instant vanilla pudding mix, milk, and sour cream, which enhances its velvety texture. Adding to the indulgence, softened cream cheese is blended with powdered sugar, creating a subtly tangy and sweet contrast that perfectly balances the dessert. A generous spread of cherry pie filling adds a burst of fruity flavor, while a topping of fluffy whipped topping creates a cloud-like finish. Garnished with almond slices for a delicate crunch, this heavenly dessert is not only visually stunning but also irresistibly delicious, making it a perfect choice for any celebration.
