uddha philosophically stated, “No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.” The new year seems to always bring the opportunity to start anew. We think of it as a fresh start, a new beginning. We make resolutions with the determination to become a better person. Yet when we fall short of that resolution we become upset with ourselves and think we have failed at some monumental task. The good news is that you can recommit to your resolution at any time. Every day brings a new opportunity to be the person you want to be. Statistics say that only 9% of people who make resolutions are able to keep them. Maybe the secret to making a resolution is to make one that is achievable or realistic. If a resolution was made, we should not be discouraged from trying even if we are not

successful. The fact that one tried is what is important. This year my resolution is to keep Parsippany on track. Last year was a time of difficult decisions regarding the township budget. Difficult questions arose. Would Parsippany be a town that would take care of its fiscal house? Would Parsippany be able to remain a place where hardworking people could enjoy an excellent quality of life? And the answer is a resounding Yes. Hard decisions had to be made and the township was able to pivot from a potential crisis to recovery. We are now on a successful path of recuperation from past transgressions. I am confident that the township will keep moving in a positive direction;

and that residents will feel reassured that we are doing everything we can to keep tax increases to a minimum while preserving the quality of services they have come to expect. Each year brings a clean slate for what we can accomplish, and I am hopeful that this year we will surpass our accomplishments of the past year. Nothing is more important to me than our residents’ wellbeing and satisfaction in their government. We should all feel good about the progress we have made since last year. 2024 will be no different. Our hard work will continue. Each year we welcome new residents and businesses to our community. They come to Parsippany for varied reasons but the most important one is that we have been consistently ranked as one of the best places to live. I want to make sure that we maintain that prestigious honor. Nothing brings me greater pleasure than keeping the Pride in Parsippany and seeing that pride reflect back at me when residents express their satisfaction in residing here. I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year and all the best in 2024.

Embark Smoked Meats: Boonton’s Hotspot for Authentic North American BBQ By Patrick Minutillo

We all know that within the area of this publication, there are a multitude of diverse international and regional cuisines that would satisfy even the most fastidious tastes. One style of cooking that I have found missing is some good North American BBQ. As you may know, American BBQ is extremely popular in locations such as Texas, Carolina, Memphis, and Kansas City, all of which claim their particular style. One thing in common with whichever style you prefer is that BBQ utilizers low temperatures, usually somewhere between 180 and 250 degrees, along with a long, slow cooking process (sometimes involving many hours), where beef, pork, roasts, chicken, wings, and more, is cooked over indirect heat using a variety of wood and/or charcoal, then marinated or rubbed with a mixture of spices and sauces, creating a wonderful mouthwatering, tasty, smokey flavor. It’s amazing how once tough cuts of meat, like a brisket or belly, are transformed into tender, moist, succulent pieces of meat that seem to melt in your

throughout the United States. I would not call myself a BBQ aficionado, but being a carnivore, a properly done BBQ is like mouth candy for me. I was excited to see that this past December 6th Embark Smoked Meats opened their doors for business at 811 Main Street in downtown Boonton, formerly the site of Thai Ping. Main Street presents a busy, bustling, oldschool American type of setting with a youthful vibe, which seems a perfect fit for this classic American classic cuisine. As my usual foodie group and I arrived I was fortunate to find a parking spot right in front of the restaurant. There is street parking only at this location. As we stepped inside, we were met by a bright, airy, energetic, vibrant ambiance that was appropriately designed for this type of venue; carefully (Continued on Page 12) January 2024

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. In this FOCUS article I would like to highlight the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District’s STEM Pathways Program. This year’s STEM Pathways Program commenced with our inaugural STEM Kick-Off Event for incoming 9th graders, organized in collaboration with The Rutgers Center for Mathematics, Science, and Computer Education (CMSCE). The event provided students with hands-on activities centered around the Design Thinking Process, fostering collaboration and emphasizing skills such as communication, perseverance, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Welcoming over 150 9th-grade students district-wide into the STEM Pathways Program, we are thrilled to announce the introduction of leadership opportunities for upperclassmen, marking the program’s 4th year.

Throughout the first marking period, our STEM students actively participated in a range of special events, presentations, and elective activities to accumulate STEM enrichment hours, fulfilling the 8

yearly program criteria. Notable events included a Walking Robot Design Challenge, a Marble Run Challenge, insightful presentations by The New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC), and Jorge Valdes from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Additionally, students had the privilege of a session with Alex Tholl, a local business owner of 3D Pets, who also hosted one of our senior internship students.

In addition to the dynamic STEM Pathways activities and opportunities this year, we are delighted to report a recordbreaking number of students benefiting from both the NJIT

Menus featuring a wide array of your standard BBQ fare are posted on the wall, along with printed menus should you want to sit down, as my group did, and ponder your choices. The counter is manned by a very personable and friendly staff, who go about their work behind a sparkling, glass-fronted counter, where you can watch some of that beautifully barked meat being sliced, pulled, and prepped for outgoing orders. The full menu, in addition to brisket, burnt ends, pulled pork, St. Louis spare ribs, half chicken, and smoked wings, also offers burgers, (a special blend of meats prepared by owner, Jasmine Gomez), hot dogs, chicken bites, mac & cheese, loaded fries, signature beef chili, Kale sprout salad, baked beans w/ rib tips, along with other sides, and even breakfast options. Embark will shortly be offering the owner’s own specialty BBQ sauces for purchase, allowing you to customize your BBQ. Of course, the Chef, despite being asked, wasn’t about to reveal the secret blend in her sauces. burnt ends. Burnt ends are cut from the point of the smoked brisket. They have a rich, smokey bark and crunchy texture. Cut into cubes (like little candies), mopped in BBQ sauce, and caramelized. Don’t be distracted by the name, burnt ends, originating out of Kansas City, are not burnt. They are just cooked to the point of the bark being predominant. Super flavorful! My dish came with the burnt ends served over Embarks Mac and Cheese; 3 cheese mac, covered with panko breadcrumbs. For a side I tried the Signature Beef Chili; it was very tasty. Others in the group went with the Pulled Pork Sandwich; which Embarks 14-hour smoked pulled pork, with their house pork rub and served between two sweet buns, along with a choice of BBQ sauce and coleslaw. Bob A. went with a half rack of the St. Louis Spare Ribs, which he enjoyed and called a generous portion.

While the rest, like me, went with the burnt ends. Not surprisingly,

no one in this group opted for the Kale Sprout Salad! Embark will shortly be offering the owner’s specialty BBQ sauces for purchase, allowing you to customize your BBQ. Of course, the Chef, despite being asked, wasn’t about to reveal the secret blend in her sauces. 20

It was a fun dining experience with this “new kid on the block.” Next time around I’ll have to give either their pulled pork or signature burger a try. When you’re in the area stop in and give them a try,

Heartwarming Tales of Disabled Rescued

n a world filled with stories of malnourished and neglected puppies, let us share a heartwarming tale of determination and compassion. These exceptional dogs, once destined for euthanasia and viewed as mere inventory to be discarded when unsold, have been granted a second chance at life. Among these rescues is Sinatra, now known as Denny, an eight-weekold Australian Shepherd with limited vision and deafness. When Denny arrived at Wise Animal Rescue, his vision and hearing impairments were initially unknown, as rescue organizations typically lack medical records or information about the puppy mills these dogs originate from. Fortunately, a vigilant foster parent recognized the issues and promptly sought veterinary care, confirming the diagnosis. Despite the emotional revelation, everyone involved remained steadfast in their commitment to finding Denny a loving and suitable forever home, regardless of the time it might take. Finding an adopter for a special needs pup presented a challenge, with no applications received until Kristin’s. Her heartfelt comment on the application, “We have three dogs, two mini Aussies, and one lab/beagle mix who is partially blind! Our family is cute and could use one more nugget! ‘Denny would be a great addition to our family, and we look forward to taking care of him,’ said Kristin.” Wise Animal Rescue couldn’t have found a more perfect match willing to take on this challenge. After discussing

Denny’s disabilities with Kristin and completing the vetting process, Wise believed this was the right fit and was excited to know Denny would have a wonderful life. Now at six months old, Denny enjoys a life filled with love and snuggles.

fetch!”

Kristin joyfully shares, “Denny is so cute, he is such a happy pup and loves everyone, people and animals! He has no idea that he is any different than other dogs, he loves life, and we are so happy to have found him.”

What is the care that is needed?

Kristin shared more insights about her life with Denny: What made you adopt a special needs pup? “We wanted to adopt a dog who may have a more difficult time being adopted, and we have lots of experience with Australian shepherds!” What have you been doing to enhance both your lives? Training, etc. “We have been using mostly touch training to teach him commands since we don’t know exactly what he can see out of his eye. He is very eager to learn new things and he also loves to play

Where does he sleep? “Denny sleeps in his crate at night; during the day, he likes to sleep wherever we are!”

“He needs help figuring out new spaces. If a wall, table, tree, fence, etc., is on his left side and he is not familiar with it yet, he might run into it or hit his head. So we stay close to him and help him map out his space so he can navigate it freely! He also has a powder for his eyesight (to hopefully preserve

Reward? “The biggest challenge is communication with Denny, but we have figured out the best ways to communicate with him! The biggest reward is seeing him play with his siblings and friends, learning new things, and snuggling!” Can you just tell us some of the things he does that make you laugh or smile? “Denny is very silly, loves to have zoomies (he has a pretty specific path that he has for zooming so he doesn’t crash), and whenever you sit on the ground, he comes right over and sits on your lap.” What is a typical day for you both? “Denny wakes up around 7:00 a.m. for a little snuggle out of his crate before

going outside to go to the bathroom and play with his siblings! Then he eats breakfast and has another play session before his morning nap. He eats lunch and plays some more before his afternoon nap! He likes to go for a walk or play outside some more before he has dinner, then has an after-dinner fetch session before he settles down for the night!” Anything else you would like to let us know about your life with Denny?

Rauchberg Dental Group’s Thanksgiving Tradition: Giving Back with Free Dental Care

T

wo generations of Rauchberg dentists have celebrated Thanksgiving in their own unique way by “giving back” with a day of free dental services. Dr. Joel Rauchberg, retired founder of the practice, and son, Dr. Alan Rauchberg, started the tradition 12 years ago, out of gratitude for their patients and interest in helping their community. Last month, the dentists of Rauchberg Dental Group helped over 60 patients who lined up at 8am to receive free services at their Give Back Day, on the first Saturday in November: a choice of free cleaning, filling or extraction. Dr. Alan knows that dental insurance is not always easy to come by, and works with his patients to make sure they get care. But on this particular day, he opens the doors to those who have no coverage and provides needed services, at no cost at all. The day has become increasingly popular with locals and community groups, and always brings a smile to the patients and staff alike. Rauchberg Dental offers many different services under one roof, including dentistry, periodontics and orthodontics, and multiple doctors work in concert for the best patient care available. Their excellent staff looks forward to serving the public on a regular basis, but especially at the next opportunity to GIVE BACK. Please contact them for more information, or to schedule an appointment for an evaluation. January 2024

The students Anika Arora and Divya Arora began their environmental work with a grassroots “Meatless Mondays” campaign in 2020 to raise awareness of the adverse effects of meat consumption on our climate. With the support of the Parsippany Green Team (PGT), they presented their research at the town library, to the environmental advisory committee (PEAC), school principals, the Board of Education, and the Town Council. They hosted tables and presented

They built a guide for elementary students and educated them on the causes and effects of climate change using fun science experiments, arts, and games. During these past 3 years, Anika and Divya have taken on several other environmental initiatives. They participated in drain audits, and cleanups in town and outside and hosted an art fundraiser.
