“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are a leader” stated 6th President of the United States John Quincy Adams. While Mr. Adams may have served as president almost 200 years ago, his sentiment to this day stands true. Great leaders are not born that way. They earn the respect and admiration of the people by their actions, by showing people they care and by not being afraid to fail. Though they may be a leader they are still one of the people and should never forget their humble beginnings. Recognizing the contributions of our noble leaders is why we celebrate Presidents Day. First President George Washington, an exemplary leader, never did much for his birthday but, following his death in 1799, his birthday became a yearly day of remembrance. He was such a favorite amongst Americans because of his unassuming 6
demeanor and relentlessly optimistic attitude that the nation wished to honor him. It wasn’t until 1879 that the day became a federal holiday. You may wonder why we continue to celebrate a man that lived over 200 years ago. The fact that he embodied many of the values on which our nation was founded upon and which continue to reverberate today is probably the most significant reason. The roots of Presidents Day go back to this honorable man who led by example and was honest to a fault. Presidents Day has evolved since then to include all the US presidents who have served this great nation as our leader. Like Independence Day, Presidents Day is seen as a patriotic celebration and remembrance. To most people this day goes mostly unnoticed. We see ads
Parsippany Focus Magazine www.parsippanyfocus.news
cross our television screens announcing Presidents Day sales on everything from mattresses to vehicles, yet nothing illustrates what the day is truly about. In today’s world where everything seems chaotic regarding our leaders, it is more important than ever to remember the great figures from out past and what they stood for. Patriotism sometimes wanes when we become disillusioned with our leaders. But it is at those times most significantly that we need to remember this nation’s beginnings and the many men who have led us to great victories and times of peace. We honor those leaders who carried this nation through the various wars and conflicts, depressions and recessions, pandemics, times of discord and a multitude of other crises the US has faced. We rely on them to remain calm amid chaos, and offer hope and guidance during those times when the world can seem out of control. This is why we pay tribute to them on President’s Day, to remember their service to the people and our great nation. So, as you are watching those commercials and considering the purchase of a new television, car or clothing, give a thought to the actual meaning of the day and a nod to those presidents that had an impact on our growing nation.

Taste of NYC in Parsippany: Social Hub by Dhaba Redefines Dining Experience By Patrick Minutillo

any people don’t seem to mind dealing with the traffic, bridges, tunnels, parking, and what I find other inconveniences, that one can inevitably expect to encounter when treading over the state line to dine in one of those trendy, hot spot eateries in Manhattan. Don’t get me wrong, I also enjoy the City when I get there, but I don’t enjoy the trip. The Social Hub by Dhaba, a relatively new to the area, Indianinspired, multi-cuisine, sportsthemed, premium restaurant and lounge has brought the same quality of food, service, and excitement you look for in NYC right here to Parsippany-Troy Hills with their new location on Route 46 East, taking over the location formerly occupied by Houlihan’s. I was fortunate to be at the Social Hubs soft opening in May of 2023 and it was time for a return visit. It is notably rare to find a sportsthemed Indian restaurant but to find one at this elevated level has to be unique. A definite Indian theme is prominent throughout the venue, yet like I stated, there is a definite NYC vibe and ambiance, particularly in the lounge area. You can’t help but be impressed with the interior décor and design. The softly lit lounge area is elegantly embellished with a warm and comfy cultured stone fireplace, brick veneer and off-white walls, a black ceiling with recessed lighting and ceiling fans, dark chocolate, soft wooden seating, and accents, with attractive upholstery. Romantic alcove seating and individual seating along the wall are available. Something for everyone’s preference. The utilization of color, design, Bollywood artwork, and ethnic garnishments certainly adds to the elegance of the upscale, yet casual, immaculately clean, and

menu options; an extensive menu filled with authentic Indian flavors in traditional and fusion dishes. I should note the menu also offers non-traditional food, veg and non-veg, including such things as onion rings, nachos, fish and chips, burgers, pizza, and pasta for those looking for other options. While Pranay offered some requested suggestions for our appetizers, I was able to peruse the multiple large-screen televisions mounted throughout the restaurant. What a great place to catch your favorite game, be it football, baseball, cricket, or whatever! I started with a Smokey Negroni (Rozaluna Mezcal, Campari, Sweet Vermouth), while my friend ordered a Spicy Mango Martini (Tito’s Vodka with Siracha, fresh lime, mango puree). Teresa prepared them perfectly. Delicious Negroni! I was also informed that all the bar ingredients at Social Hub are fresh and made in-house every day. The cocktail menu was just
as impressive as everything else at Social Hub and included many unique and interesting libations, along with mocktails for those who prefer their drinks without alcohol. A large selection of draught beers, including IPAs, and craft selections are also available, and yes, you can even get a Guinness Irish Stout if that’s your preference. I did have to try a TAJ Mahal Premium Lager before I left.
As I stated earlier, initially we had planned on moving into the dining room for our entrée, but we were having such a good time at the bar we decided to finish off our meal there. For that entrée, we decided on Bhuna (rich, bold, and flavorful, thick curry dish, cooked along with chicken). You have a choice of several proteins that you can have your Bhuna cooked with, including lamb, goat, shrimp, or veg. This dish was fantastic and came with sides of Basmati rice and Naan (for dipping into that wonderful sauce)! The taste created by the layers of spices was obvious. Taste was bold, rich, and spicy. Spicy, and yet quite mild, and it came covered in a deep, flavorful sauce. I would certainly order this dish again. Never one to give up, we moved on to desserts. Once again, on Pranay’s suggestion, we went with the Tres Kesar Leches and the Social Falooda. The Milky Tres Kesar Leches was excellent. Spongy, rich, light, and soaked with a saffron-infused milk sauce, and

Our appetizers arrived quickly. We started with and shared, Veg Momos – Tandoori Flavored (Steamed Dumplings made with paneer, onion, ginger, and veggies in tandoori marination); Social Hub Cauliflower Manchurian (Fried Cauliflower tossed in Manchurian Sauce); Kat-E-Soya (Skewered soya chunks in a pickle marinade); and Methi Murgh Tikka (a delicious, mildly flavored, boneless, white meat chicken curry dish). Every dish was a treat! Packed with flavor! We both enjoyed every bite and even though we were both quite full, as every dish was plentiful, I insisted on having at least one of their entrees.

Taj Mahal Premium Lager is slow-brewed to perfection using the choicest malts and imported “Saaz” hops. It is a beer connoisseur’s delight. The flavor is malt nuanced and it delivers a pleasant bitterness that counterpoints with the subtle tones of sweetness that results in a dry finish.

Social Hub by Dhaba is brought to us by the Fine Indian Group. The group owns 11 restaurants in New York and New Jersey, with four in Parsippany. The ones in Parsippany include Jashan, Dhaba Express, LaZeez, and of course Social Hub. The interesting thing is that all their restaurants are unique in their way and each offers diners a different dining experience.

topped with sweet fresh cream. Thumbs up on that one! Our second dessert, a Social Falooda, is a dessert I’ve never heard of, but it was delicious and a nice change of pace. It had a sweet and rosy floral flavor and was full of different textures. This dessert ice cream provided yet another layer of creaminess which complimented the vermicelli, basil seeds, and nuts
that comprise this dessert. Great meal all around! It’s no wonder Indian cuisine is growing so rapidly, not only in the U.S. but worldwide, and it is easy to understand why, considering the vibrant, complex flavors, bold spices, interesting textures, and aromatic fresh ingredients that this cuisine is known for. All six candidates pictured above, poised for a spirited exchange of ideas at Parsippany Hills High School’s annual town hall debates, a platform where students delve into the intricacies of the Republican and Democratic Presidential Primaries. By Parnika Khanna
The Parsippany Hills High School’s Civics and AP Gov classes hosted their eagerly anticipated annual town hall debates. Each year, the nature of the event changes based on what election is occurring around that time; this year it happened to be the Republican and Democratic Presidential Primaries. About a month ago, students had to apply for a candidate they wanted to represent, after six students were chosen between both the Civics and AP Gov classes, those students were then able to choose who their “press secretary” and “campaign manager” would be and they were also granted two propagandists. Over several weeks, these campaign staff and candidates worked hard doing extensive research, hanging up propaganda, and even speaking or “campaigning” in other history classes. Leading up to the event, the school’s walls were decorated with propaganda from all candidates, attempting to persuade students and staff to vote for them as their party’s nominee.
The hour-long debates were held four times each day in the school’s auditorium. Dozens of students from history classes poured in, many of whom had prewritten questions for specific candidates. Superintendent, Dr. Robert Sutter was also in attendance for one of the town halls. The debates commenced with the moderator asking each candidate a general opening question: Why would you be a good candidate for the Republican/Democratic party? Afterward, they were asked a second question: If elected, what would be the one problem you would like to solve after inauguration? Then each candidate was asked two pre-screened questions from the audience. Finally, the campaign managers were invited to go up and students and the floor opened up for questions, many of which touched on topics such as immigration, inflation, abortion, climate change, and foreign relations. Some even pressed on the candidates’ personal life or their previous statements. The crowd was sufficiently entertained watching
22 Parsippany Focus Magazine www.parsippanyfocus.news
A couple of days later on January 12th, the student body voted, and here were the results. The candidate who won the Democratic Primary was Dean Phillips, who Alex Laviola represented, and the candidate who won the Republican primary was Nikki Haley, who Kesha Patel represented. An additional experimental poll was conducted asking who the students would vote for if it were hypothetically a general election and oddly enough the winner was Donald Trump who was represented by Athon Ros. The teachers who run the event, Mr. Bechtler and Ms.Rosendahl, each shared what they thought of this year’s debates. Ms.Rosendahl said, “What makes this project so special is sharing the wealth of this knowledge with the rest of the student body. It is everyone’s civic duty to be an informed voter and my students helped each Viking become familiar with each candidate and where they stand on current issues.” Mr.Bechtler said, “During the town hall meeting, students attending have a greater opportunity to ask questions, voice opinions, and discuss issues that affect their lives. Town hall meetings also foster democratic values, encourage community involvement and give students a hands-on experience of the democratic process. Engaging in mock elections also allows students to gain skills needed to become more informed and active citizens in the future.” Overall, this year’s debates were entertaining. Congratulations to the winning candidates and all who participated and helped make it a special experience!

Flash Back of Parsippany
Parsippany Then and Now
Nestled within Westmount-Arlington Plaza at 808 Route 46 in Parsippany, the Aspen Hotel Manor graced the grounds of the former Parsippany-Troy Hills Drive-In Theater. This cutting-edge establishment specialized in hosting banquets and weddings, boasting an impressive capacity of up to 2,800 guests. The venue provided state-of-the-art meeting rooms and teleconferencing facilities for corporate gatherings, alongside an indoor pool complemented by a poolside bar and a rejuvenating jacuzzi. Fitness enthusiasts could make use of the on-site exercise room, fully-equipped gym, and multiple steamy saunas. Gourmet cuisine was a hallmark, with exquisite dining options available for every meal, including the convenience of in-room dining. Regrettably, the hotel met its demise in the early 1990s. In its place, the Westmount-Arlington Plazawelcomed KMart and ShopRite (which relocated, making way for Bed, Bath and Beyond and now Crunch Fitness. Over time, KMart ceased operations, leading to the property’s transformation into a bustling Marshalls and Home Goods store, with another retail space still awaiting a name and purpose.
Kmart initially established its presence in Parsippany by taking over a local department store space within the Troy Hills Plaza, a location that is currently anchored by Target. This smaller store ceased operations in 1997 when the company opened a larger flagship store at the Westmount-Arlington Plaza in the same year. The new Kmart facility occupied an impressive 100,000 square feet. However, by the end of 2017, Kmart made the decision to close its doors, leaving the property vacant and in search of a new purpose. 30

The former Kmart building underwent subdivision, resulting in the creation of three distinct retail units. These units encompass 25,623 square feet, 25,205 square feet, and 54,024 square feet of space. Marshalls and Home Goods have been designated as occupants for two of these retail spaces. However the 54,024 square feet section on the left side of the building still awaits a tenant and currently remains vacant.

Parsippany Focus Recipes
Chocolate Covered Strawberries
A delightful Valentine’s Day recipe to consider is “Chocolate Covered Strawberries.” They are not only delicious but also a symbol of romance. Here’s how to make them: Ingredients: •Fresh strawberries (as many as you’d like) •High-quality chocolate (dark, milk, or white chocolate, depending on your preference) •Optional toppings like crushed nuts, coconut flakes, or sprinkles Instructions: Wash and thoroughly dry the strawberries. It’s essential to have them completely dry for the chocolate to adhere properly. Prepare a baking sheet or tray 34
lined with parchment paper. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until it’s smooth and fully melted. Alternatively, you can use a double boiler for this step.
Repeat the dipping process with the remaining strawberries. Allow the chocolate-covered strawberries to cool and harden. You can place them in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to speed up this process.
Hold a strawberry by its green stem, dip it into the melted chocolate, and swirl it around to coat it evenly. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
Once the chocolate has set, you can arrange the chocolate-covered strawberries in a beautiful box or plate as a lovely Valentine’s Day treat.
Place the chocolate-covered strawberry on the parchment paper-lined tray.
These homemade chocolatecovered strawberries make for a sweet and romantic gift or dessert to share with your loved one on Valentine’s Day. You can also customize them with different types of chocolate and toppings to suit your taste. Enjoy!
If you want to add toppings like crushed nuts or coconut flakes, sprinkle them on the chocolate while it’s still wet.
