A Word From Our Publisher

Frank L. Cahill As we begin 2020 --- a new decade – we set goals for what we want our future to be like and look like. We take a glance back at where we have been and what we have done, and we try to remember to extend ourselves. January is a time to cleanse, to start fresh and not dwell on who we were twelve month ago. So much change can happen in a year, so as we plan our future and commit to resolutions, we also leave room to change our minds – to grow and be human.

and celebrate milestones. In 2019, MorrisFocus.news was born. This new online publication serves Boonton, Mountain Lakes, Boonton Township, Hanover Township, Florham Park, East Hanover and Madison. We are proud of the success of this new venture. In October 2019 we celebrated our 30th Anniversary. Parsippany Focus Magazine was first thought of as our “30th Anniversary” issue. But when we introduced the magazine to our business partnerships, they were excited about this publication and asked us to continue the magazine on a monthly basis. January 2020 is now our fourth issue and each month

At Parsippany Focus, we are proud of the growth in our community throughout the past year and cannot wait to see what’s in store for us in 2020. As new businesses open, old businesses expand and charities fund-raise and we all turn one year old, we will continue to be right there to share your stories

January in Parsippany

Mayor Michael A. Soriano This month marks the beginning of a brand-new decade in Parsippany. The 2020s will be an eventful decade for our community, one marked both by a remembrance of how Parsippany came to be and a clear vision for the future. Early this month, Parsippany will adopt a new Master Plan. Our most recent Master Plan, which serves as the guiding document in our community’s future planning, land use, open space, and zoning needs, was adopted in 1976. A great deal has changed in the last 40+ years, and our new Master Plan will be one that leads us through the rigors and challenges of the 21st century. The process for creating our new Master Plan was extensive. Led by a regionally-renowned planning firm and the dedicated volunteers on our Planning Board, the plan incorporates elements from two open public meetings, an online community survey, and meetings with key community civic and business organizations. I am proud of the thought in effort put into this process by every participant, from our Township Planner to resident attendees at our open public meetings.

face and the goals we share for the future will be key in growing a committed and knowledgeable citizenry to shape Parsippany’s future. The passage of our new Master Plan also coincides with the unfortunate passing of Planning Board Chairman and longtime Planning Board member Bob Keller. Bob was a fixture in Parsippany’s civic life, as well as a mentor to me. He was a kind, caring, and dedicated man who will be missed at the Parsippany United Methodist Church, The Lake Parsippany Fire Department, our Planning Board, and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany. My thoughts and prayers, along with those of thousands of Parsippany residents, are with his family. Bob cast a long shadow in his years of service to Parsippany, and this Master Plan, in so many ways, serves as his legacy and parting gift to the community he loved.

The Master Plan will be available after its passage at the January 6th Planning Board meeting, and I encourage all residents to read through it. Understanding the challenges we 6 l Parsippany Focus Magazine

3 Ways Mental Health Impacts the Workplace Statistics like these are why businesses are realizing more and more that not making mental health a top priority can cost them big time. Loss in Productivity. Work demands and challenges can lead to increased anxiety and stress, causing a reduction in engagement, productivity, and an increase in mistakes. Because many mental health disorders are not easily recognizable, it’s common for managers to label bad performance as laziness or lack of competency. Instead, managers should provide employees with a variety of resources to help improve performance. Communication. While there is an increase in awareness surrounding the mental health industry, it is still a stigma among many, preventing them from getting the help they need. Having open and transparent communication is essential to reducing

8 l Parsippany Focus Magazine

the mental health challenges affecting the workplace. As employees, it is important to let your manager know when you are feeling overwhelmed at work. Don’t be ashamed to be human. You want to avoid feeling burned out, especially if you love what you do. While our hearts may be in the right place, we are not exempt from having a bad day, or being impacted by undiagnosed health conditions. Engagement. One of the most effective ways to increase engagement in the workplace is through transparency. As leaders, it is important to be transparent about how you handle high-stress situations. Your staff needs to feel that you can relate to them and sharing your challenges and strategies could help them to build a more trusting relationship, and increase their interest and engagement.

A Message From the Superintendent

World Language: Opening Doors for Students

Dr. Barbara Sargent Some new changes are underway in the World Languages Department in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District. This year, 6th grade students enjoy a full year of language study in either French, Italian, or Spanish and continue their studies through 7th and 8th grade. Previously, 6th grade students had only a semester of language study which required the 7th grade teachers to nearly start from scratch with their instruction. Three full years of middle school language instruction should yield more fluent 9th grade students who can enter confidently into Level II or III of their language choice in high school.

who provide language instruction through small group lessons. This instruction, in addition to print- and language-rich learning environments in classrooms, helps our newest students to learn academic and social language skills. The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District is proud of the cultural diversity represented by our student body, staff, and growing academic offerings. We look forward to offering more opportunities to connect our students with their marvelous local and world community.

As a result of a World Language survey conducted earlier this year in which parents and students were asked their preference for a 4th World Language choice, the district will offer Mandarin Chinese at both high schools in September 2020. Interested students who are new to the language will enroll in Chinese I while students who have previously studied the language or dual language speakers may enroll in Chinese for Heritage Speakers. The opportunity to take the Mandarin Chinese Advanced Placement exam will also be available to students. World Language instruction in our elementary schools is appropriately aimed at cultural appreciation as more than 80 languages are represented in our school community and many of our students speak more than one language. There are numerous opportunities for students to celebrate their rich backgrounds through assembly programs, shared literature, Heritage Day events, and guest speakers. English Language Learners are supported by specially certificated teachers January 2020

Parsippany Middle School Ice Hockey Team

Parsippany Middle School Ice Hockey Team received certificates from Parsippany-Troy Hills Mayor Michael Soriano On November 24, 2019, the Parsippany Middle School Ice Hockey team, playing in it’s inaugural season, defeated Chester-Mendham 6-5 in the Finals of the Aspen Ice Arena Middle School Ice Hockey League. Parsippany fell behind by 2 goals after the first period of play before storming back with 6 goals in the second to take a 6-3 lead into the second period intermission. The team played strong defense in the third-period to come away with an exciting 1 goal victory. The championship capped off a tremendously successful season for the players which saw the team finish first in the League’s highlands Division with an 8-2 regular season record, before defeating Park Regional in the Semifinals by a score of 9-3. In fact, the Parsippany team defeated the only teams to beat them during the regular season (Chester-Mendham and Park Regional) en route to the title. The team, which was comprised mostly of 6th grade students from Parsippany’s two middle schools, 10 l Parsippany Focus Magazine

Brooklawn Middle School and Central Middle School, was backstopped by goaltenders Andrew Nicholas and Anthony Conetta. The defense was comprised of Adam Gasparro, Joseph Gasparro, Max Wright, Will Shoemaker, Jacob McCullough, and Delilah Scheffen, and the forwards included John Gonnella, Robert Hemenway, Matthew Hemenway, Evan Carlson, Billy Edwards, Chris Dana, Parker Enslow, Domenico Prisco, and Hunter Parrillo. This season was a stepping stone for the future as the hope is these players will play together, develop their games, and graduate to play for the Parsippany Regional High School Hockey Team in a few short years. The team came together through the hard work of a few dedicated parents and the support of the Parsippany PAL and Parsippany community as a whole. The players, coaches, and parents want to thank everyone for making this a wonderful experience for the kids.

What Is the Oral-Systemic Link? By Dr. Alan D. Rauchberg We’ve all heard that eating right and exercising are great ways to stay healthy. But did you know that taking care of your body also means taking care of your mouth? If your mouth is unhealthy, it can negatively impact several other parts of your body. This is called the oral-systemic link. Let’s look more closely at how your oral health can affect your overall health. How Does Oral Health Affect the Rest of Your Body? The mouth-body connection of health has been well-documented. Your mouth is home to lots of lots of bacteria, most of which are harmless or even beneficial. However, when you neglect to brush and floss, it can attract harmful bacteria in the form of plaque. These bacteria create acid that eats away at your teeth and can cause cavities and even gum disease.

your gums and cause inflammation. When left untreated, it can create pockets in your gums through which bacteria can spread through your bloodstream to different areas of the body, such as the heart and lungs. What Health Conditions Are Linked to Poor Oral Health? Several health issues have been connected to poor oral health, such as: Heart disease. When bacteria from gum disease spread to the heart, it can harden your arteries, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. Diabetes. Because diabetes lowers your ability to fight infection, gum disease can wreak even more havoc than normal. It can also give you a harder time regulating your blood sugar levels. Lack of control over blood sugar has also been shown to increase likelihood of chronic gum disease. Take care of your oral health and your blood sugar levels to prevent problems in both.

Gum disease is a condition where bacteria erode at

Alzheimer’s disease. The same bacteria in gum disease have been found in brain tissue of patients with dementia. As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, oral health generally worsens. How Can You Take Better Care of Your Oral Health? To prevent these health conditions from arising, practice the following oral health care habits: Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. l Floss at least once a day. l Limit tobacco and alcohol consumption. l Drink plenty of water. l

Visit your dentist at least twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings. At these appointments, your dentist can diagnose oral health problems before they get worse and spread to other parts of your body. By following these habits, you can not only have a

Cerbo’s “Trees for Troops” is a huge success

Parsippany-Troy Hills Volunteer Fire Department District 6 Member Michael Sanford loading trees on the FedEx truck

The holiday season can be difficult for military families. For the second year, Cerbo’s Greenhouse and Garden Center, participated in “Trees for Troops.” Local Parsippany Girl Scouts helped tag the trees and volunteers then loaded the trees onto a FedEx truck, which will be transported to military bases in the South for distribution. Joining the group of volunteers were Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce, Parsippany-Troy Hills Mayor Michael Soriano, Morris County Clerk Ann Grossi and Representative Mikie Sherrill. Parsippany-Troy Hills Mayor Michael Soriano said “Volunteerism and support for our troops has always been a tradition in Parsippany and I am grateful to the Cerbo‘s Family, Fire District 6, and the Girl Scouts and all of the volunteers who came out today to support Trees

for Troops.” “The Cerbo family is graciously supporting the “Trees for Troops” effort again this year, and I’m delighted to be joining them as volunteers prepare freshly cut Christmas trees for delivery to a base in Texas this year,” Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce said. Cerbo’s Parsippany Greenhouses, a family-owned business since 1913, also operates Cerbo’s Christmas Tree Farm in Branchville and Cerbo’s Hampton Nursery in Newton. “Last year we had our first year of involvement with “Trees for Troops.” The organization helps facilitate the donation of Christmas trees to military service members across the country in partnership with businesses like ours. We receive donations for trees from people or businesses and then prepare them from our

Last year, we were able to donate over 110 trees, This year we are shipping out over 300” said Tyler Cerbo, who manages sales and marketing for the family business. This year, the trees are destined for Fort Sam Houston, which is part of the Joint Base San Antonio in Texas and under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force, 502nd Air Base Wing, Air Education and Training Command. The trees were harvested this past week by the Cerbo family and employees, as well as some veterans and volunteers with the Paterson-based Harvest Outreach Ministry International, a non-denominational and multicultural ministry serving Northern New Jersey area and beyond.

By December 13, Trees for Troops will deliver thousands of trees to more than 74 US bases in all branches of the military. It has already sent about 200 trees overseas. Trees for Troops began in 2005 and has delivered more than 225,000 Christmas trees to military families in the US and to troops stationed overseas. The act may seem small, but for those serving, it can mean everything. Tree farms in about 20 states have donated trees to brighten a military family’s holidays. Many individuals have donated to Trees for Troops as well, getting the organization to its grand total of 225,319 free trees over the past 15 years. All those trees are then delivered to the bases with the help of in-kind work from FedEx, whose volunteers coordinate all deliveries. Cerbo’s Greenhouse and Garden Center is Parsippany’s oldest business - even older than the town itself! The original deed was completed on a piece of parchment paper and consisted of 26 acres much of which is now under Route 80.

VOLUNTEERING

Kiwanis Club and Sons of Italy held 23rd Annual Wine Tasting Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany Annual fundraising was recently held with the goal of supporting programs that benefit children and youth. This year Kiwanis Club partnered with Sons of Italy Chapter 2561. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany member Michael Mulhaul has been the Chairman of the “Annual Wine Tasting” for the past 23 years. The local programs funded by the Kiwanis Club include: sponsored youth programs in the Parsippany Troy Hills school district, such as Key Clubs in both high schools, Builders Clubs in the middle schools, and K-Kids Clubs in all of the elementary schools; Parsippany Day Care Center; Parsippany Library; Camp Nejeda, the Stickley Farms family fun day and numerous other 501(c)3 organizations that serve children and families. In addition to this financial support of children’s leadership development and service initiatives, the club meets the basic needs of the less fortunate families in our community by providing food and food cards, toiletry items, and blankets through a partnership with the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Community Center. The Club also supports state and national organizations that serve the needs of children and their families.

Sons of Italy Lodge 2561 was founded as a nonprofit organization, which contributes thousands of dollars to worthwhile local charities and families. The lodge is proud to be able to serve a small portion of needs to our local communities. Donations include, but are not limited to, The Parsippany Food Pantry, High School Scholarships, Gift cards to families in need, The Valerie Fund, Alzheimer’s, and many others. COMMUNITY NEWS

Parsippany’s Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban goes in effect February 6 The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Council passed Ordinance No. 2019:33 prohibiting retailers from providing single-use plastic carry-out bags and non-recyclable paper bags to customers for the purposes of transporting products or goods out of a business or store. The ordinance goes in full effect Thursday, February 6, although some area retailers have already started to comply. For instant, Quick Chek, 170 Parsippany Road, charges consumers 10 cents if you require a compliant bag. Businesses must now provide recyclable paper bags. Residents and customers should be encouraged to bring their own reusable bags whenever possible. The purpose of this ban is to reduce litter, protect the environment, and remove hard-to-recycle bags from our waste stream. Retailers that distribute paper retail/grocery bags must charge a fee between 10 cents and 25 cents. The fee is collected and kept by the business to help cover the cost of purchasing the compliant bags. This ordinance affects all

retailers, including grocery stores, restaurants, corner stores, pharmacies, clothing shops, hardware stores, beer and liquor stores, and every other retail store that provides bags to customers at point of sale. Retailers will face fines if they supply banned bags to customers after February 6. A critical element of managing the ban in any business is preparing and training their team, particularly those who have regular contact with customers, such as checkout operators and customer service staff. Other towns with similar ordinances are Ridgewood, Paramus, Saddle Brook, Glen Rock and Garfield. Bag bans in Montclair took effect in December. Haworth, Madison and Woodland Park are set to enact bans in March. For additional information read complete article on www.parsippanyfocus.com/plastic

Meet Kyle, a 3-year-old Pug/ Brussels Griffon mix!

Tired of Climbing Stairs? A Stairlift Can Help

Kyle was recently rescued from a local, municipal shelter where he was found as a stray. We are so excited to be able to help this happy boy find his forever home! Kyle is very friendly and can always be found smiling (see his pictures!). He is a real nugget of joy! He often stands on his hind legs and does a little dance when he wants your attention (or a taste of your dinner!)! Kyle is dog-friendly with dogs who will give him space and can live with children 16+. His preferred home would be a quiet one without a lot of chaos. What can we say, Kyle loves his peace and quiet! He would also prefer a home without frequent visitors or one where his owners are experienced with fear issues. This little guy is afraid of strangers but loves his foster family. He will need a home that understands and can work through this with him. Kyle loves toys and playing. He also really enjoys curling up in his foster mom’s laps for pets. He’s a great mix of fun and snuggly!

VOLUNTEERING

Pick up your crayons and paintbrushes and get ready to draw Project Help has announced the theme for its Third Annual Poster Contest. In 2019 the veteran’s aid group launched its mobile closet. Therefore art students are being asked to focus their creativity on the Project Help vehicle, a converted school bus that brings clothing and other necessities to retired military individuals and families statewide. Last year hundreds of school children from throughout New Jersey submitted their handiwork. This year thousands are expected to participate. All students - kindergarten through high school - are eligible to share their artistry and creativity. In the coming weeks art teachers will be contacted with the contest details. Individual teachers can also reach out to Project Help to sign up and young artists can participate independently if their schools aren’t entering the contest.

February 21, 2020. Entries will be judged on design, originality and content. Prizes will be awarded in four grade level groups. The winners and their families will be invited to a dinner award ceremony. Winning entries will be displayed on social media, the Project Help website and at events to support the mission of serving our veterans. Iacono, president of County College of Morris (CCM), has received the Enterprise Organization of the Year Award from the Morris County Hispanic-American Chamber of Commerce (MCHACC) in recognition of his and the college’s support of the Hispanic-American community. In presenting the award to Iacono, Esperanza Porras-Field said, “The Morris County Hispanic-American Chamber of Commerce recognizes you as a leader with a profound local impact on our business. CCM President Presented with Enterprise Award from Morris County Hispanic-American Chamber of Commerce Dr. Anthony J. Your strength of character, passion and commitment to service are admirable. You have been an outstanding representative of the mission of the MCHACC.” Porras-Field served as event chair for the 30th Anniversary MCHACC gala and award ceremony held December 5 at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany. “It is such an honor to be recognized by the MCHAAC,” said Iacono. “As I like to note, County College of Morris does great things every day, but we do even greater things through the strength of our partnerships with organizations such as the MCHAAC, which is such a strong resource for the success of the Hispanic-American community.” 34 l Parsippany Focus Magazine

The mission of MCHAAC is to advance the interests of businesses and organizations that serve the U.S. Hispanic-American market. Iacono became CCM’s third president in 2016. Since then, he has worked diligently to strengthen the college’s relationships in the community and with business and industry. One of his guiding principles is that “great community colleges are those which strengthen the local economy by helping to attract, retain and support businesses, along with providing a high-quality education that changes lives.” In addition to building strong ties with the MCHAAC to support the Hispanic-American community, the college also recently was awarded an $110,000 grant from Impact 100 Garden State to launch the Dover College Promise. That project will prepare low-income students for college and provide them with scholarships to cover tuition at CCM. The population of Dover is 70 percent Hispanic or Latino. By increasing the number of students who earn college degrees, CCM and its project partners, The Educational Center of Dover, the Dover School District and business and community leaders, hope to further elevate graduates tobecome leaders in their community.
