A Message From the Publisher

Frank L. Cahill October 1, 1989 the first edition of Parsippany Focus rolled off the presses and dropped into the mailboxes of every home and business in Parsippany.

Parsippany Focus was just a concept and a dream of the Parsippany Area Chamber of Commerce....

The Board of Directors wanted a local publication to serve the residents and business owners of Parsippany. There was no publication serving Parsippany-Troy Hills.

As the years progressed from there, Parsippany Focus became a weekly newspaper. As with many local newspapers it became tough to cover the rising costs of publishing and either the publications were

merged into newspaper chains or ceased publication.

After a short period of time of not publishing, and receiving many requests from residents, business owners and government officials to continue with Parsippany Focus, I decided to continue with the publication online, www.parsippanyfocus.com.

Today, ParsippanyFocus.com is viewed by over 100,000 readers monthly and still publishes the same local news that was started in 1989.

Mayor Michael A. Soriano Parsippany continues to be “The Place to Be” in 2019, and I’m excited to share details of our biggest upcoming events in the first edition of Parsippany Focus Magazine.

Parsippany has long been home to a thriving Italian-American community, which is why I decided to institute an annual Italian Cultural Festival last year. Growing up in Queens, my father would take me to the San Gennaro Festival every year, and I was always surprised that our township did not sponsor a similar event. This year’s 2nd annual Italian Cultural Festival will feature local vendors, authentic foods, and traditional Italian music.

Gujarat, India typically performed during Navratri. This folk dance is performed in a circle around a picture or idol of the Goddess; the circle formation represents the circle of life.

The men and women look vibrant and full of life as they energetically dance in colorful costumes to the upbeat rhythm of the drums.

Please join the Parsippany Indian Association on Friday and Saturday, October 4 and 5 from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at Parsippany Hills High School (PHHS), and both Friday and Saturday October 11 and 12 from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at Parsippany High School (PHS) for this fantastic series of events.

Join us on Sunday, October 6 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at North Beverwyck Road and Minnehaha Boulevard. I would like to thank the Sons of Italy Lodge 2561 for their support and guidance in putting this event together.

In closing, I would ask that we as a community spend time reflecting on the contributions of our dear former Mayor, Marceil “Mimi” Letts, who served the residents of Parsippany with honor, distinction, and wisdom from 1994 – 2005.

Every year, the township hosts a Senior Prom open to all senior citizens in Parsippany. An afternoon of dancing, music from DJ Pete, and a hot buffet will be capped off with the crowning of the Prom King and Queen.

Mimi was a mentor to an entire generation of civic leaders, and she will be remembered as a dedicated public servant who guided this township into the 21st century and delivered real results for residents.

Parsippany High School Alumni Vows to Bring Sustainability to America Traveling often leads to discoveries about other cultures and places that make us wonder how we can improve things at home. Though it is easy to pack a souvenir and bring it back with you, not everything can fit in a 23 kg check-in bag.

That’s what Daniel Wang, a Parsippany High School alum and rising junior at Brown University, realized while returning home from his summer abroad in Berlin as a participant of the prestigious Cultural Vistas Fellowship, a fully funded internship program designed for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in international exchange.

As a mechanical engineering student interested in environmental sustainability, Daniel’s eight weeks in Germany were an eye opener for him. The country’s devotion to sustainability was both surprising and inspiring at the same time.

Finding a Souvenir to Bring Back Home The experience left Daniel questioning why the U.S. can’t be equally devoted to sustainability, and he began comparing the two countries’ approaches to the problem for insights about what the U.S. could do differently.

One thing he noticed is how much the role of youth involvement could be improved in the U.S. “I look at sustainability as a tool that helps share a possible future and believe that the youth can use education and awareness to play a crucial role in making America more sustainable.”

This belief has a lot to do with his experience interning at the Fields Institute, where Daniel worked on a sustainability education project. His role involved communicating and teaching children about the United Nations’ Sustainable 6 l Parsippany Focus Magazine

Development Goals (SDGs) and developing communications and advocacy material to connect with businesses. These efforts aimed to educate organizations and municipalities about how their locations can be used as sites and field trip locations to create awareness about SDGs. Daniel also developed learning materials for children to prepare them for these trips and reinforce the lessons later. These experiences strengthened his belief in the benefits of making young people and children more aware, as well as how their efforts can make a difference.

Packing the Message of Sustainability Being accepted into the Cultural Vistas Fellowship came at a time when Daniel needed it the most.

“Before going to Berlin for the internship, I had a blossoming interest in environmental sustainability and was becoming skeptical about pursuing a career purely in engineering. Through the internship at Fields, I learned how to see sustainability from a more human perspective—not just environmental sustainability, but all other things that have something to do with the conditions of life for people.”

This experience also made Daniel realize how important it is to perfect the way we present various ideas to people. While he recalls being taught that turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can help save up to 200 gallons of water per month, he believes that other similar messages should be equally widespread.

Dr. Barbara Sargent The first day of school welcomed 7290 students and 1378 staff members back as Parsippany-Troy Hills School District embraces a new year of learning and growing.

Guided by an ambitious Strategic Plan, the district is proud of new opportunities to enrich our students’ scholastic lives and support their social/emotional growth.

Students in our middle and high schools will have the opportunity to engage in new coursework. New elective classes at the middle school include Sports and Literature and Foods – 7 th Grade. Students also will study three

full years of their choice of World Language (Spanish, French, or Italian) in Grades 6, 7, and 8.

New Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Human Ecology and Calculus AB have attracted a number of students in grades 9-12. Additional new high school courses include Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Literature and Film, and Superheroes and Modern Mythology. Finally, students may enroll in online courses as part of a consortium and are taking such classes as AP Psychology, German, Russian, Latin, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, and Sustainable Engineering.

Both Parsippany High School and Parsippany Hills High School implemented a new building schedule that provides longer instructional periods and classes that rotate and ‘drop’ throughout the week. Students also have a Unit Lunch which provides them more time to meet with teachers, talk with friends, and enjoy some downtime in the middle of their day.

A new strings program has come to the elementary schools and more than 125 of our third grade students will begin instruction in violin, viola, or cello. The district also implemented a new Advanced Math class in 5th Grade to support students who are ready for accelerated mathematics instruction. Finally, a Sanford Harmony program to support Social and Emotional Learning is being provided to all elementary students and a district-wide focus on student voice and student leadership has begun.

Numerous facility improvements were completed this summer, including a new auxiliary gymnasium floor at Parsippany High School, partial roof replacements at Lake Parsippany School and Troy Hills School, a new outdoor track at Parsippany Hills High School, and renovated Home Economics classroom at Central Middle School and Parsippany High School. It’s going to be an amazing school year in Parsippany-Troy Hills and we welcome your participation at our school events and celebrations.

Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms Celebrates its 30th Anniversary The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms is marking its 30th Anniversary in 2019, and we’ve been celebrating all year long. The celebration will continue in October with a free Open House during our annual Stickley Weekend on Sunday, October 13 from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m.

We hope you’ll join us.

The museum’s 30th anniversary is a milestone for the museum and for the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills. In 1989, the Township purchased Craftsman Farms, Gustav Stickley’s rustic country estate in Morris Plains, and set it on a path to public use through a partnership with The Craftsman Farms Foundation—today known as The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms. This partnership tasked the museum with preserving, protecting and sharing the historic property and its story with the public.

Gustav Stickley founded Craftsman Farms in the early 20th century.

A home design and furnishings entrepreneur, when he began purchasing the property, he had built a successful business empire that was expanding into New York City. While constructing Craftsman Farms, which encompassed 650 acres and twelve buildings, he was, at the same time, making plans for the 1913 opening of the Craftsman Building off of 5th Avenue.

Gustav Stickley Craftsman Farms was to embody Stickley’s aesthetic vision, which we might call Craftsman style today, (in his time, it was called Arts and Crafts and was part of an international movement originating in England). Craftsman Farms was to include a family home, boy’s school, clubhouse, and a working farm to supply the Craftsman Restaurant atop his Craftsman Building.

As World War I brewed across the world, destabilizing the economy, and as public tastes changed, Stickley’s businesses suffered. After declaring bankruptcy in 1915, he sold Craftsman Farms to George and Sylvia Farny in 1917. Their family cherished the property for three generations. Though over the years, much of the acreage was sold, the Farnys retained most of the original buildings, remodeling many into rental apartments. In 1989, the Farnys sold the remaining 26-acre core of Craftsman Farms to the Township. This core included the Log House, the Stickley family home and his architectural masterpiece.

In 1990, the property was designated a National Stickley’s family home, the Log House, today.

Historic Landmark. The museum is a public park and open for tours year ‘round. Thousands of visitors annually from around the world, and we hope you’ll visit too. Follow us on Facebook for the latest news about programs and events.

“There are narratives that aren’t being told but are equally important. Like, avoiding eating a quarter pounder can help save a month’s worth shower water supply or that every almond sourced from California consumes a gallon of water.”

Daniel believes these are important messages, often distorted or hidden, and must be communicated to make the world a more sustainable place.

While developing an understanding of various aspects of sustainability, Daniel also got an insight into how humans communicate about these issues and what causes them to act. “The internship helped me see sustainability from a human aspect. professionals and conservationists who work on

I saw how everyone can contribute to it, including professionals and conservationists who work on it every day—and children and young people who may be unaware that their efforts matter.”

Having seen the technical and the human approach, he sees great value in combining them.

This idea has refueled his passion for engineering and given him a new purpose.

Daniel is now back at Brown continuing to pursue his engineering program while trying to tailor it to focus on sustainability. Though he believes being more educated can help people make the world more sustainable, he also hopes to continue acquiring tangible experiences that remind us to take action.

wo young men were charged with lofty marching orders as they received the highest rank bestowed

by Boy Scouts of America.

Facing a crowd of some 100 family members, friends and community leaders, the two 18-year-olds, Jack Summa and Ryan Porcelli swore with solemn faces their allegiance to the Scout brotherhood during their Eagle Scout Court of Honor at Parsippany-Troy Hills Elks Lodge 2078.

“The eagle represents an understanding of community and nation, and a deep respect for both,” said Bruce Benson, Troop Committee Chairman for the Troop. He said the award represents the completion of a long process after years of commitment to that effort.

As the pair received their long-awaited Eagle Badge, they were joined by parents John and Terri Summa and Keith and Kim Porcelli. Kim pinned the Eagle Badge on Ryan and John pinned the Eagle Badge on Jack, each on the shirt pocket over their hearts.

The Eagle Scout Award is Scouting’s highest rank and among its most familiar icons. Men who have earned it count it among their most treasured possessions. Those who missed it by a whisker remember exactly which requirement they didn’t complete. Americans from all walks of life know that being an Eagle Scout is a great honor.

The award is more than a badge. It’s a state of being. The Eagle Scout may have received the badge as a boy, but you earn it every day as a man. In the words of the Eagle Scout Promise, they do your best each day to make their training and example, their rank and their influence count strongly for better Scouting and for better citizenship in the troop, in their community, and in their contacts with other people. And to this they pledge their sacred honor.

Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men. Only 5% of the Boy Scouts actually earn this rank.

Two Parsippany High School Sweethearts Marry Audrey Lips and Louis Contaldi were married on September 1 at David’s Country Inn, Hackettstown in front of family and friends. Daniel Weiss officiated.

Audrey is the daughter of James and Julie Lips, Louis is the son of Louis and Frances Contaldi. Both families reside in Parsippany.

The couple met at Parsippany High School where Louis graduated in 2009 and Audrey graduated in 2011. Louis is a graduate of Loyola University Maryland and the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. He is employed at UBS as a Compliance Analyst.

Audrey graduated from Rutgers University and is employed at UBS as an Anti Money Laundering Surveillance Analyst.

The couple resides in Nashville, Tennessee.

The requirements for the Eagle Scout rank are as follows: lBe active in your troop and patrol for at least six months as a Life Scout. lDemonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Law in your everyday life. lEarn 21 merit badges, including the 12 that are required-First Aid, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Communications, Personal Fitness, Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving, Environmental Science, Personal Management, Swimming or Hiking or Cycling, Camping, and Family Life. lServe actively in an approved position of responsibility for a period of six months after becoming a Life Scout. lPlan, develop, and lead others in carrying out a service project worthy of an Eagle Scout. 6. Take part in a Scoutmaster conference. lAppear before a board of review of prominent persons, and satisfy them that you have done your best to understand and live up to the Scout Oath and Law and, in all ways, qualify for the Eagle Scout Award.

Jack began his Scouting experience in Cub Scout Pack 216 where he earned the Arrow of Light. At the end of fifth grade in 2012, with the help of his Den leaders, Mrs. Berardo and Mrs.Dowling, he advanced into Boy Scouts, joining Troop 173.

He quickly made many new friends as he moved through the ranks of Scouting under Scoutmasters John Worthington, Les Wu, and Michael Catapano.

For his Eagle Project, Jack renovated an upstairs storage room in the Smith Baldwin Historical House in Parsippany

Washington D.C. and Rhode Island, as well as, participating in National Youth Leader Training, and obtaining The Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow. During the summer of 2017. Jack also attended the National Jamboree in West Virginia where he earned his Italian Interpreter strip and his Radio Merit Badge. He earned the NOA Camping Award and has completing 121 nights of camping.

Jack was able to achieve the Scout” Scholar Athlete Award as well. Jack has been both a Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

For his Eagle Project, Jack renovated an upstairs storage room in the Smith Baldwin Historical House in Parsippany. His crew cleaned out the room, moved the carpeting, and then proceeded to paint and then proceeded to painted the room and and hallway adjacent. Two wood storage units were designed and built for the room. Throughout the process, he received guidance and words of encouragement from his Eagle Coach, John Worthington, his parents and sister, his Scoutmaster Michael Catapano, Troop 173 Committee Chair Bruce Benson and his Project Beneficiary, Mr. Tortorella. Jack greatly appreciated all the support that was given to him while he worked on the Project.

While a student at Parsippany Hills High School, Jack was involved with clubs, performed community service and worked as a Lifeguard at Lake Parsippany. He ran cross-country for 4 years, and was captain his senior year. He also played baseball and wrestled. He was part of Ski Club, Italian Club, National Honors Society, and Italian Honors Society.

Outside of school, as a member of St. Christopher’s Church, Jack earned service hours as an Altar Server, and volunteered at Vacation Bible School.

He hopes to continue to be active in his community as he embarks on the next chapter of his life as a Pharmacy Major at the University of Rhode Island in the fall.

Jack’s favorite parts of Scouting were hiking, white water rafting, and tenting. He also gained a lot of additional knowledge about the outdoors through Scouting which he believes will help him throughout his life.

Jack earned 25 Merit Badges: Rifle Shooting, Swimming, Fingerprinting, Lifesaving, First Aid, Citizenship in the Nation, Canoeing, Citizenship in the World, Mammal Study, Personnel Management, Environmental Science, Golf, Radio, Camping, Communication. Reptile Amphibian, Family Life, Citizenship in the Community, Cooking, Personal Fitness, Fishing, Shotgun Shooting, Leatherwork, American Cultures and Entrepreneurship.

Ryan started Scouting in Cub Pack #218 in Parsippany earning his Arrow of Light to later on cross over to Troop #173 in 2012.

Ryan has held multiple positions of responsibilities within the Troop. He was an Instructor, Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and a Guide. Ryan has camped overnight for 102 nights in a tent and 39 in a cabin. Ryan participated in 214 community service hours while he was a Scout. Ryan’s best

Ryan was awarded the Scout Scholar Athlete Award in 2018, which recognizes his achievements in Scouts, academics, and athletics.

For Ryan’s Eagle project, he installed three new TV’s at the Parsippany PAL and created an advertising system so that the PAL can run their ads on the TV as well as for the community. He greatly appreciates all the help from his Eagle coaches, Juan Correa and John Worthington. Also thanks especially Paul Lomelo, his father, and help from Scouts for all their hard work on the project.

Ryan recently graduated from Parsippany Hills High School and will be attending County College of Morris in the fall to study Biology. He plans to get his Associates Degree after two years and transfer to a university.

If you’ve ever attended a PACC Juice Up Your Morning networking event, you’ve probably met Katelyn Tiernan. Even though her organization, the American Cancer Society, only joined the PACC in early 2019, Katelyn has made it to nearly all of our monthly Juice Up meetings, usually with another one of her colleagues in tow. Why the need for such a dedicated presence?

Simply put, for the past several years, Katelyn has been laser-focused on getting the word out about the free programs and services made available to cancer patients and their families by the American Cancer Society, including but not limited to: The Road to Recovery program, which provides cancer patients with free transportation to and from their treatment appointments, is but one example of the American Cancer Society’s hands-on approach to providing solutions, easing burdens, and making difficult things easier for cancer patients and their families.

Hope Lodge & Hotel Partners – Hope Lodge is the organization’s own brand of 30 lodges around the country. Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Every Hope Lodge also offers a variety of resources and information about cancer and how best to fight the disease. And for those who must travel to cities that don’t have a Hope Lodge, the American Cancer Society has partnered with hotel chains around the country to provide free or discounted accommodations.

The National Cancer Information Center offers help by connecting patients, families, and friends dealing with a cancer diagnosis to caring and expertly trained staff to answer questions, identify resources, offer health insurance assistance, and provide a listening ear and guidance. The service can be reached by phone at 1-800227-2345, or live chat via the cancer.org website.

Since 1946 the American Cancer Society has funded more than $4.8 billion in cancer research.

As a Senior Community Development Manager, Katelyn is not only responsible for getting the word out to the local community about these and other resources, but she also oversees the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Parsippany, NJ. country in a 3-to-5-mile, non-competitive walk to honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.

This year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Parsippany Walk will be held on Sunday, October 20 at 4 Century Drive in Parsippany. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., the opening ceremonies commence at 8:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 10:00 a.m. Last year, the Parsippany walk hosted over 10,000 community members and raised over $711,000! Sadly, there is always more work to do.

Q: As someone who has dedicated her career to promoting awareness and fundraising for an important cause, what is the best marketing advice you can give to someone just starting out?

A: Be your most authentic self. Engage and listen.

It’s a conversation, and maybe a long-term one during which you are hopefully building a relationship. If you are too “sales-y” right off the bat, it can be a big turn off, especially in large networking groups where everyone is hoping to make valuable business connections. Sure, everyone is there for the same reason – but that’s all the more reason to dial it back a little and get to know people with a genuine, sincere connection. In my experience, those connections have served me far better than those born of a hard, aggressive sell.

County College of Morris to Hold Fall Open House Start Right and Finish Strong County College of Morris (CCM) will hold its Fall Open House on Saturday, October 19, for students and their parents, and others interested in advancing their education and career opportunities.

Two sessions will be held, starting in the Dragonetti Auditorium located in the Student Community Center, 214 Center Grove Road, Randolph. The first session begins at 10 a.m. and the second at noon. Registration is required to ensure participants can learn about the academic programs that interest them the most.

Kiwanis Club and Sons of Italy to hold 23rd Annual Wine Tasting PARSIPPANY — You may be busy raising your family or serving as a caregiver for relatives and regret not having the time to help improve your community. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany and Sons of Italy #2561 has a solution to that dilemma.

On Thursday, October 17, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., you can help improve the lives of others and have fun while doing so by attending the Kiwanis annual wine tasting at the Hanover Manor in East Hanover.

This wine Tasting is the Kiwanis Club’s largest fundraising event with the goal of supporting programs that benefit children and youth.

The local programs funded by the Kiwanis Club include: sponsored youth programs in the Parsippany Troy Hills school district, such as Key Clubs in both high schools, Builders Clubs in the middle schools, and K-Kids Clubs in all of the elementary schools; Parsippany Day Care Center; Parsippany Library; the Stickley Farms family fun day and numerous other 501(c)3 organizations that serve children and families. In addition to this financial support of children’s leadership development and service initiatives, the club meets the basic needs of the less fortunate families in our community by providing food and food cards, toiletry items, and blankets through a partnership with the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Community Center. News reporting isn’t easy. With every story, someone will love you and someone will dislike you. Thats the business. We aim to be fair and report the facts.

One of my pet peeves is to always attach documents from where news information was gathered, unless of course it was obtained from a confidential source. But even then, we make sure we have enough documentation to verify the facts.

I would like to thank our loyal readers and advertisers for the support over the past thirty years.

In closing, I would like to dedicate this issue in memory of Former Mayor Mimi Letts. Mimi will always be remembered for getting things accomplished in Parsippany and making sure land was purchased with Open Space funds to keep Parsippany green.

Rest in peace Mimi, I will always remember and miss our conversations.
