thecare that

• We are the first place for all Colorado communities to come for care, support and resources related to Parkinson's.

Connection has been shown to prevent social isolation and to provide encouragement in PWP. Through our support groups and third-party fundraisers, not only are we providing that connection for those with Parkinson’s, but we are connecting family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and the entire community to learn and engage with Parkinson’s.

• We share our expertise and operate our organization with efficiency and transparency.

Empower This is not easily grasped by anyone, but when empowerment is achieved it can go a long way for someone with Parkinson’s and their loved ones. At PAR, we encourage every PWP to discover and claim their own personal empowerment in order to better manage their disease. Whether this is independently done or in a group, we strive to provide resources so everyone, including Care Partners, can be empowered.

Connect,

• We are committed to generating sustainable financial resources to carry out our mission.

• We care, offering personal attention, guiding individuals to the best local resources and advocating for each individual's rights.

• We serve individuals and their families in the way that is most helpful to them.

• We empower people on their journey, sharing expertise and connecting them to a support

Over 17,000 Coloradans are living courageously with Parkinson’s disease and instead of letting the disease define them, they choose to define themselves and we help them do just that! At PAR, we provide resources for People With Parkinson’s (PWP) at all points of their diagnosis. We are connecting PWP to meaningful support, resources and beneficial programs in the community.

What does it mean to Empower and Thrive?

PAR has focused on empowering those in the Parkinson’s community with free exercise classes and educational programs as well as fundraising events. Our goal in providing these resources is to help PWP live life to the fullest without any limitations.

Connect

• We connect the medical community to the Parkinson’s community, providing education and sharing information on clinical research.

• We create awareness in the Colorado community around Parkinson's disease and advocate for those in our state.

Thrive Many of our free programs and services are supported by grants and sponsorships from our generous partners, but our most meaningful contributions are from those who partake in our lively events or host their own. By encouraging participation, PAR’s constituents thrive by staying active, connecting with others and spreading awareness at fun events with friends and family.

6INTRODUCTION

Core Values

7

Dear PAR Community, In 2021, we celebrated our 40th anniversary and bounced back from the challenges of 2020. It was also a year of transition as we moved back to in-person events, classes and support groups while still maintaining virtual options for those who weren’t quite ready to attend in-person. The PAR staff came back to the office in early 2021, and we were so happy to see the faces of our community as restrictions began to lift and we could get back to “normal.” We had a busy year and exceeded many of our expectations.

PAR’s focus on exercise continued with an increase in the number of classes by 12% in 2021. Classes were added throughout the state, with over half of the new classes added in our satellite communities outside of the Denver Metro area. We have also restarted our expansion into Wyoming with classes added in Cheyenne and Lander. Wyoming has few resources for People with Parkinson’s, and we feel bringing our direct services to this area will be very beneficial to the Wyoming Parkinson’s community.

PAR continues to bring educational events focusing on topics requested based on feedback from the Parkinson’s community. In 2021, we held our Colorado Community Conference virtually which focused on the latest medications and research. We were thrilled to be able to hold the e3 Conference and Care Partner Summit in-person while still giving the option to attend virtually as well. In addition to our conferences, we were able to take our educational seminars back on the road to reach people where they live. PAR held 10 educational seminars throughout the state and continued to provide webinars to ensure everyone had access to increase their knowledge on how they can continue to thrive with Parkinson’s. On the financial front, all non-profits were hit hard in 2020 due to the pandemic, and PAR was no exception with a 30% reduction in revenue. The great news in 2021 is that our community showed their considerable support, and we are back on track with over $1M in revenue, and even broke our previous revenue record from 2019! This revenue is used to support our free programs and services and allows us to continue expanding what we do throughout Colorado

Minority Outreach In 2021, the Minority Outreach program partnered with Denver Health to connect with their providers, nurse practitioners and staff in all Denver Health clinics. We are partnering with Dr. Fabio Grassia to present our PD101 series to provide information on all the basics of Parkinson’s. We made a huge effort in face-to-face outreach by visiting community centers and local parishes, where the population is primarily Spanish speaking or bilingual. Each visit we interacted with the community and handed out our Spanish information packet to those wanting more information on Parkinson’s disease. Our Minority Outreach program will allow us to connect with patients who are diagnosed with Parkinson’s and provide them information on all PAR's programs and resources.

PAR AT A GLANCE

• Presented 2 educational conferences. e3 was a hybrid event with over 450 people either in-person or attending the livestream. Participants learned how to thrive with Parkinson’s, and our Care Partner Summit had almost 100 in-person attendees learning skills and tips to be their best.

The Parkinson Association of the Rockies (PAR) came back strong in 2021. The first half of the year we continued to offer virtual exercise classes while moving as many classes as we could back to in-person. Our community has learned to embrace technology so we will continue to offer classes virtually for those who are unable or not comfortable attending classes in-person. This year continued to be a strong year for education, utilizing both virtual and in-person class options. Many educational events were hybrid, meaning we had both in-person and virtual attendees. This allows us to be directly in smaller communities but offer these seminars to a larger audience which has been transformative.

• Expanded classes into Wyoming with new Power Punch classes in Cheyenne and Lander.

Patient and Family Services Cari Friedman, LCSW and Patient and Family Services Director, provided consultations to 1,901 PWP and their care partners throughout the year. She also started a weekly virtual support group open to anyone in the Parkinson’s community and a monthly virtual support group specifically for Care Partners. Cari also provided several PD101 presentations within the CO Parkinson’s Community for those who have been newly diagnosed or are trying to learn more about this chronic illness.

OVERVIEW RECENT

• Hosted 6 Chat with a Parkinson's Pro and 4 Ahead of the Curve seminars in the second half of 2021 giving communities access to Parkinson’s professionals in a small group format.

• Added 14 new exercise classes across the state. Eight of those classes were in our satellite communities in need of more resources, and the remaining 6 were in the Denver Metro area.

• Held 19 educational webinars with an average attendance of 30 people per webinar. Due to our accesible content, PAR has begun to reach People with Parkinson’s outside of CO.

In 2021, we accomplished the following:

9 OVERVIEW

We lend out mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs and U-Step walkers for our constituents to borrow for up to 90 days, completely free of charge. This program allows constituents to try mobility aids at home and in their daily routines, to ensure it is the proper tool for them, before they invest in buying the equipment. In 2021 we loaned 25 pieces of mobility equipment to members of our community.

EDUCATION

13 ENERGIZING

With so many different classes to choose from, our community got moving in 2021. Though many classes went back to in-person, we continued to offer virtual options (about 1/3 of our classes) for those who were not quite ready to go back. We added 14 new classes throughout Colorado and even expanded into Wyoming. As exercise is a proven way to slow the progression of PD, PAR continues our commitment to offer a variety of FREE classes so there is something for everyone. THROUGH EXERCISE
