PARK TUDOR PHOENIX SPRING 2018

From the Head’s Desk While 2020 has certainly brought its share of challenges for all of us, at Park Tudor we have much to celebrate. We are approaching the midway point of the school year, and while we have shifted certain grades and divisions to eLearning at various points during the semester, overall we have been gratified by the amount of in-person learning we have been able to maintain. I particularly appreciate the efforts that our students have made to comply with our “normal for now.” Our construction projects around campus are progressing rapidly. We anticipate finishing the expansion of the Ayres Auditorium lobby in January; we look forward to welcoming all to see this new space when we are able to resume Fine Arts performances again. The Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness is also taking shape; the steel framework and girders are going up now and it is truly beginning to look like a building. Surprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic has allowed us to reach this point in the construction while remaining on-time and under-budget - this is the first time in my career that I’ve been able to make that statement regarding a major construction project. As of now, we are on track to open the building in November of 2021. Even without a gym this fall, we completed a full season of sports with tremendous success. You’ll find full summaries of all of our fall sports beginning on page 9, but we are particularly proud of our girls soccer team who finished their season as Class A state runners-up. In addition, I congratulate our two sophomore runners, Sophia Kennedy and Gretchen Farley, who placed 5th and 12th in the state cross country finals. Go Panthers! While our Admissions Department has been limited in hosting face-to-face events, campus tours, and shadow days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to host a highly successful Open House event for prospective Upper School students in the

enormous tent we have erected on the football field to house our PE classes this winter. The event drew a large but socially distanced - and masked - crowd to experience our school, and as always our students and faculty showcased the exceptional educators and extraordinary opportunities which are hallmarks of a Park Tudor education. We are optimistic for this admissions season, despite the challenges presented by the pandemic. Finally, I hope that you will mark your calendars for Alumni Weekend, planned for April 23-24, 2021. While it might look a bit different from past Alumni Weekends, we are very hopeful that we will be able to finally welcome you back to campus to experience all of the great things that are happening at Park Tudor as we celebrate our 50th anniversary year. My best, Gareth Vaughan Head of School

News of the School Students Return to Campus to Begin the 2020-2021 School Year We were thrilled to welcome our students back to campus for the start of the school year. The freshman class of 2024 made the traditional walk through the Cagle Gate on the Freshman First Day, August 12, and Lower School and Hilbert Center returned to school on August 13. Middle and Upper School enjoyed their first day on Monday, August 17. Park Tudor has implemented a variety of protocols—including mask wearing, social distancing, frequent hand washing, and a daily health checklist—to help ensure that students can safely learn on campus.

PT Announces Lead Gift from Irsay Family for New Sports Center for Health and Wellness In August, Park Tudor announced a lead gift from the Irsay family that will spearhead construction of our new sports center for health and wellness. The Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness will serve as the new home for Park Tudor athletics and physical education. Work is well underway on the Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness, which is scheduled to open in November 2021 and will include a fieldhouse, auxiliary gym, multipurpose studio, weight and cardio fitness room and seminar classroom, as well as community spaces and places for students to gather. Carlie Irsay-Gordon ’99, Casey Foyt ’01 and Kalen Jackson ’06, daughters of Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO, Jim Irsay, and the next generation of Colts ownership, are Park Tudor alumnae and parents of current Park Tudor students. “We are extremely grateful to the Irsay family for their generous commitment to the Park Tudor community,” said Park Tudor’s Head of School, Gareth Vaughan. “The new building will be a space to promote health and wellness that nourishes our students’ minds, bodies and spirits. It will add to campus life for students of all ages.”

Girls Soccer The girls soccer team enjoyed another very successful season, falling just short in its bid for back-to-back IHSAA Class 1A State Championships. The Panthers lost to Lafayette Central Catholic in an epic two over time (9-8 PK) battle. It has been quite a two-year run for the Panthers, with seasons of 22-2 and 21-3. Due to their success in Class 1A, the team will be promoted to Class 2A in 2021. The 2020 PTGS squad grew from last year with a record number of 38 players. Highlights from season include: • IHSAA Class 1A State Runner Up • Three wins against ranked 3A teams, and finishing the season 4-2 against ranked 2A/3A teams • Senior class leaves with the most wins in a four-year career. • Most goals in a season with 130. • Least goals conceded in a season with just 14. • Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference (PAAC) First Team: Colina Miroff, Jenny Walker, Gracie Whitacre, Eleni Pantzer, Gretchen Farley • PAAC All Academic: Colina Miroff, Lucy Crossin, Annie Murphy, Jenny Walker, Sara Hartman, Gracie Whitacre, Jose Lacy, Zoe Paugh, Sarah Gregg, Emma Miller, Cate Rettig, Piper Murphy, Caroline Kerr. • 2020 All Marion County First Team: Colina Miroff, Jenny Walker, Gracie Whitacre, Gretchen Farley • 2020 ISCA District 3 First Team: Colina Miroff • ISCA Top Team Player: Colina Miroff • ISCA Academic All State: Lucy Crossin, Sarah Gregg, Sara Hartman, Jose Lacy, Emma Miller, Colina Miroff, Annie Murphy, Piper Murphy, Zoe Paugh, Jenny Walker, Gracie Whitacre Congratulations to the team on another historic season!

Cross Country The boys and girls cross country teams made sure 2020 was a season to remember. Both teams won the Pioneer Athletic Academic Conference championship, completing a conference sweep for the first time ever. Spencer Hughes, Daniel Mukhin, Jack Button, and Sam Mulvey earned AllConference Honors for the boys. Sophia Kennedy, Gretchen Farley, Abigail Moyers, Isabella Wilburn, Mary-Emma White, and Claire Carpenter earned AllConference Honors for the girls. Sophia Kennedy was the girls’ conference individual champion. The boys finished their season at the Sectional Meet, placing 10th. The girls placed 3rd at the Sectional Meet, securing their first-ever appearance at the Regional Meet where they went on to finish 6th. Sophomores Sophia Kennedy and Gretchen Farley advanced to the State Meet, placing 5th and 12th respectively, and earning All-State honors. This was the first time in school history that two Park Tudor runners had advanced to the State Meet. Jade Thomas and Ethan Kim earned Academic All-State honors. Chloe English, Annie Flowers, Eleanor Hayward, Ethan Kim, Wellesley Mobasser, Dakota Sciscoe, and Jade Thomas earned Academic All-Conference honors. Both teams return the majority of their varsity rosters, and look to build on the success of this season in the fall of 2021.

Volleyball The Park Tudor volleyball team started off the year as a young and inexperienced group. With half of the team graduated from last season, new players were inserted into the lineup to keep the top-10 ranking tradition going at PT. The young Panther squad started off the year winning their first 11 matches. Some highlights include an opening season win at Wheeler High School and a tough comeback win against 1A sectional champion Lutheran

SPORTS NEWS High School, in which they defeated the Saints 3-2 after being down 12-8 in the fifth game. During one weekend tri match, the team swept rival Speedway and Union County; this was the fourth year in a row that Park Tudor has won this weekend tri match. The Panthers also scored a major comeback victory against Scecina, winning 3-2 after being down 2 sets to 1. The Panthers chalked up another victory against 4A Bedford NorthLawrence in the opening round of their tourney, followed by two close losses against #6-ranked 2A Evansville Mater Dei and #9-ranked 4A Martinsville in to finish their early stretch of matches 11-2 and earning a #9 ranking in 2A.

After a narrow loss to 4A Pike HS, PT reeled off another six wins in a row to finish their half of the conference 3-0. This undefeated mark sent them to the conference tourney as one of two #1 seeds. Unfortunately, #2-ranked 3A Muncie Burris was too much for the Panthers in the final of the tourney, with the Panthers losing 25-22, 25-18 in a hard-fought match. After defeating Speedway once again in the first round of the Marion County tournament, the record for PT stood at 19-4 and the Panthers were ranked #10 in 2A. With a couple of injuries sidelining two starters, the Panthers dropped their last 5 matches to finish the season 19-9. Sara Gomperts was named All Marion County, All Conference, All District, and team MVP, and is a potential All State honoree. Ava Smith was named All Marion County, All District, and team Best Offensive Player and is a potential All State honoree.

Boys Soccer The PT boys soccer team ended its season with a loss in the sectional finals to local rival, Heritage Christian School, 1-0. The team finished the season with a 9-6-1 record. The Panthers were undefeated in Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference (PAAC) matches, and were crowned Conference Champions. Although the team graduates 12 seniors, 11 members of the varsity squad will return next year. Along with the next incoming class of studentathletes, the team expects to make an impact in 2021. Season highlights include: • 59 goals for/19 goals against • PAAC 1st team: Peter Dubie (Player of the Year), Nick Bohm, Gavin Murphy, Jeremy Tian, George Ferguson

Boys Tennis The Park Tudor boys tennis team had a rebuilding year in 2020, with 33 boys at all levels of play coming out for our team. The varsity team finished the season with a record of 8 wins/10 losses, and the JV team finished with 5 wins/5 losses and 1 tie. The team made it to the semifinals of the Marion County Tournament, as well as the finals of the Sectional Tournament, where they lost 4-1 to Brebeuf. The team of Michael Fryburg and Simon Rothbaum went on in the IHSAA Boys State Individual Doubles tournament; they lost to a very good Zionsville team who went on to the Final 8 of the state tournament. The Panthers were named Academic All State with a cumulative team GPA of between 3.6 - 4.0. Michael Fryburg/Simon Rothbaum were named Honorable Mention for All State Team Doubles. PT captured the Pioneer Athletic Association Conference (PAAC) Championship, held at Ball State University. The following players were named All Conference: Nik Mukhin, Harrison Davis, Jack Anderson, Michael Fryburg, Simon Rothbaum, Hank Smith and Rohan Shah. PAAC Academic All Conference honors went to Simon Rothbaum, Hank Smith, Arjun Kubal, Benji Posey, Brian Zhu and Dylan Sciscoe. PAAC Outstanding Academic Achievement for a Junior/Senior earning a 3.75 GPA or higher went to Arjun Kubal, Benjamin Posey, Dylan Sciscoe, Hank Smith and Brian Zhu. In an effort to provide additional play, our JV team participated in the Carmel Invite and the HSE Royals JV Invitational. The events provided great competition and match play for our teams. In the Carmel Invitational, Atticus Caress and Rohan Shah finished in 2nd place and Will Schmidt and Cole Burkman finished in 3rd place. The team finished in 5th place in the

HSE Royals JV Invitational; Lucas Bassi finished in 2nd place at number 3 singles. The coaches would like to thank all of the players and parents for an amazing year; they are looking forward to next season.

The Homecoming game was held on October 2 vs. Beech Grove, with the Panthers coming up short by a score of 40-10. The team finished the regular season with losses to Covenant Christian and North Decatur High School. The Panthers drew a bye in the first round of sectionals, and ended their season with a loss in the second round vs. Covenant Christian, 44-12. Congratulations to the Panthers on a great year, finishing above .500 in the regular season. The future looks bright for football at PT!

Girls Golf The girls golf team launched their season on August 6 with the Crooked Stick Invitational. A very difficult course and limited early season practices made for a tough day for the girls competing, but it was a great experience for everyone involved. Following that tourney and sandwiched between two close losses to Cathedral and Perry Meridian, the girls defeated the Brebeuf Braves with a score of 202 to 205.

Football The Park Tudor football team opened the season going undefeated for their first four games. Their season kicked off with an impressive win over the Gophers from Clinton Prairie High School, 59-21. They followed up with a win at Trader’s Point Christian Academy, where the team continued to look impressive on both sides of the football, winning 55-14. The third game of the season was a home game - and senior night - with the Panthers hosting the Tiger Cubs from Greencastle High School. In a game to be remembered, the squad was able to overcome a 28-6 fourth quarter deficit to pull out a victory by the score of 29-28. The team followed up that impressive performance with a win over the Twisters from Oldenburg Academy to go to 4-0 for the season - the first time in 20 seasons for the Panthers to start with four straight victories.

The team showed great improvement over last year both as a team and individually. The girls finished first in a 3-team match against Lawrence Central and Lawrence North, and also defeated Pike in a dual match at Saddlebrook Golf Club. A tough loss to a good University High School squad followed those victories. Sophomore Sia Patel led the team in scoring average followed closely by juniors Mary Kate Tanselle and Audrey Wang. In the Marion County Tournament at Woodwind Golf Course, the Panthers shot a very impressive 374 and took third place. Sophomore Sia Patel finished third overall in the entire field, which placed her on the Marion All-County Team. The girls golf team competed in IHSAA sectional #15 at Maple Creek Golf Course. They played well, but missed advancing to the regional as a team by one place, finishing fourth overall. Sophomore Sia Patel and junior Audrey Wang placed in the top three of non-advancing teams, and advanced to the IHSAA regional.

Annual Report

ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends of Park Tudor, The following 2019-2020 Annual Report honors and recognizes more than 1,200 donors to Park Tudor, including current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff. Our thanks to all of you who continue to support the school’s mission to provide an exceptional education and extraordinary opportunities to all our students. The Park Tudor community has responded to the challenges of these unprecedented times with flexibility, grace, and generosity. We are grateful and pleased to recognize your support on the following pages. The 2019-20 school year started strong, and the development office worked with parent volunteers, alumni and faculty to host various events to engage our community and to support the school. These events included: • Co-hosting tailgates before five home football games with the Booster Club. These tailgates were open to the entire school as well as alumni, and averaged 300+ per evening. In addition to providing dinner, the younger children could enjoy activities like face painting and balloon animals before everyone cheered on the varsity football team. We were also proud to welcome Spencer Summerville ’06 in his first year as football coach. • Hosting alumni engagement events for recent graduates at Indiana University, Purdue University, and Notre Dame. We also held a reception for alumni living in the Washington, D.C. area. Spanning class years from 1974 to 2018, attendees heard from Head of School Gareth Vaughan and shared memories of their time on campus. While the realities of COVID-19 meant that many cherished events and traditions could not take place in the spring, we found creative ways to gather and celebrate important milestones. In late April, the classes of 1980, 1985, 2000, 2010, and 2013 met via Zoom instead of on campus for Alumni Weekend. The Senior Breakfast, which is hosted by the Alumni Board and kicks off graduation weekend festivities, was held via a "drive through" ceremony on May 17. Faculty and staff lined the hill leading up to Ayres Auditorium (socially distanced) to cheer graduates and their families as they arrived. Each student received their alumni pin and took a family photo on the day that was originally scheduled for graduation. We will continue to find creative and meaningful ways to engage with alumni until it is safe to gather in large groups. On behalf of the entire school community, I offer my sincere thanks to all of you for your generous financial contributions, and for the additional gifts of your time and talents in support of the mission of Park Tudor. With gratitude, Kelly Lamm Teller ’87 Director of Development

Initiatives and Programs Supported by the 2019-2020 Annual Fund Opportunity starts at Park Tudor. What students discover today will ignite passions tomorrow, and every day at Park Tudor is an inspiration. Both in and out of the classroom, students are free to explore their interests with guidance from educators who share their excitement. The Annual Fund is crucial to helping us prepare students for success in college and beyond - whether students are learning together in person or remotely. • Middle and Lower School students marked disABILITY Awareness Week with guest speakers, puppet shows, and a scavenger hunt.

• Fifth graders experimented with circle gardens to study germination of plants and environmental factors that might affect change in plant growth over time. Students grew a variety of radishes, kale, spinach, beets, and lettuces in their gardens. • Students in grades 9-11 enjoyed a visit from filmmaker Julie Sokolow, director of the documentary, Barefoot: The Mark Baumer Story as part of our ongoing partnership with the Heartland Film Festival. Seniors traveled to AMC Castleton Theater to screen film shorts submitted to the festival by filmmakers from around the world. • Upper School students in Model United Nations traveled to Dayton, the University of Chicago, Georgetown University and The Hague for conferences. • The Lower and Middle Schools hosted a group of students from Scuola Italiana de Montevideo, an opportunity for students to meet friend from Uruguay, practice language skills, and learn about their culture first-hand.

14

PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2020

• The Upper School performed “Urinetown, The Musical” to sold-out crowds. The production of “Urinetown” provided a great opportunity to connect the musical narrative, which tells the story of a terrible water shortage, to the real-world global water crisis via an ongoing Middle School partnership with the non-profit organization charity:water.

• The College Counseling Department hosted college fairs featuring Indiana colleges and universities, along with schools from across the country.

• During Black History Month in February, Upper School students enjoyed a presentation by guest speaker Karin W. Sarratt, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources, Marketing, and Communications Officer at OneAmerica and mother of Kamryn ’18 and Edgar ’21. • Many cherished Park Tudor traditions were able to continue virtually following Park Tudor’s shift to eLearning in March, including Lower School Field Day, the Middle School Musical performance, and Upper School Awards Day. • We had the joy of celebrating the Class of 2020 in-person at our socially distanced Commencement ceremony, held outside in a tent on the football field.

• Peter Gray, a research professor of psychology at Boston College who has conducted and published research in neuroendocrinology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education visited campus to present Play Deficit Disorder: A National Crisis and How to Solve it Locally. • In January, Upper School students celebrated Chinese New Year with presentations by students taking Chinese classes.

Second grader Rennick Helm excited for the first day of school.

Eighth grader Michael Pinner received the series championship for Nexgeneracers (NXG) youth motorsports in October.

Middle School students participated in "socially distanced socializing" during advisory periods. The goal of this activity was to allow students the opportunity to practice socializing while spaced appropriately. It was also a nice chance for them to enjoy some much needed conversation and fresh air. PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2020

Alumni Feature: Evan Lee ’16 Finds a Silver Lining in the COVID-19 Pandemic By Cathy Yingling Chapelle ’87

Evan Lee ’16 was gearing up for his final season competing for the University of Pennsylvania as one of the top college decathletes in the country when his plans were upended by the coronavirus pandemic. Evan was a stand-out during his time at Penn; he holds Penn’s indoor heptathlon record of 5,507 points, and scored the eighth-highest point total in Penn’s outdoor decathlon history, with 7,060 points. At first, Evan was incredibly disappointed as the Ivy League became one of the first conferences to cancel spring sports. Soon, however, Evan found a silver lining in a graduate program at Duke University, another chance to compete in the sport he loves, and an extra year to train for his Olympic dream. I recently sat down—remotely—with Evan to hear more about his journey.

have stayed at Penn, but unfortunately the Ivy League has a rule against grad students competing, and I was on track to graduate in the spring. Did you ever consider giving up on your final season, since you were graduating? Not really. Track and field has been such a huge part of my life; I knew I wasn’t done yet. I really felt like I had unfinished business. How did you deal with life in quarantine? Were you able to continue training? Quarantine was the first time in years when I had nothing to train for. How do you train when you don’t know what’s in your future? And I had no facilities to use. I finally started to train for a half marathon; I was really motivated and I was racking up a lot of miles, and finally my body just said “no.” Ultimately I had to reorient myself to get back to training for the decathlon. You’re currently in a graduate program at Duke University, pursuing a Master’s Degree in Bioethics and Science Policy. How did you decide that would be the best option for you? After I joined the transfer portal, I spent a very long day fielding calls from various programs and coaches. I have a habit of pacing when I’m talking on the phone, and I walked about 17 miles that day talking to coaches. I also talked to my parents about my options and prayed about it, and finally selected Duke as my best option. I have been very grateful for my parents’ and my brother Christopher’s support throughout this process and my athletic career.

How did you feel when the shutdown happened in March due to the pandemic? It took me completely by surprise. I was home for spring break. The track and field indoor nationals were scheduled for the second weekend of spring break and I was hoping to be competing there, so I hadn’t planned any sort of a vacation for the break. At first I was frustrated and disappointed because the Ivy League was the first college conference to cancel the spring season, about 48 hours before any others cancelled, so I was wondering “why is this only us?” I was in shock for a couple of days, but then it became apparent that all college sports were being cancelled. I talked to my coaches and eventually realized that this could be a good opportunity for me, because the decathlon really favors experience, so I could potentially get another year of training. I still had one more year of eligibility, so I joined the transfer portal to start considering my options. I would have loved to PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2020

ALUMNI FEATURE How has it been going since you started at Duke? It’s been great. My classes are a hybrid - two out of five are in person, and I’ve felt really comfortable going to class in person with the COVID-19 protocols in place. For the track team things have felt fairly normal, as well; we reported August 10 and we’ve been in training six days a week. We’re tested once a week, and most of our training has been outdoors. When we are inside for weight training or other activities, we’re wearing masks.

Park Tudor also helped me with time management. PT students have the opportunity to be involved in a lot of different activities. In addition to track and field, I also participated in tech theatre, so I learned how to balance getting my homework done with all of those other activities. In addition, I formed great relationships at Park Tudor. I developed friendships with like-minded people in my classes, and I always felt like I had teachers who were looking out for me. What’s next for you? What are your career goals?

How do you balance competing in sports at such a high level with your studies? It’s tricky. In season I have to be more organized and motivated. I have a lot less time to waste, so I have to be very conscious of the amount of time I have for training, for school work, and for sleep. It’s really a matter of being disciplined and clear about my priorities; it took me a couple of years in undergrad to figure out the balance. Some have mentioned Olympic potential for you, and of course the Olympics have been postponed to 2021. What will an extra year mean for you? It definitely helps to have an extra 52 weeks to train and improve. Experience is key for the decathlon; it takes time to reach your peak in 10 events. Getting to the Olympics would definitely be a dream come true, but I think a more realistic goal would be to compete in the Olympic Trials next summer in Eugene, Oregon. I’ve set several goals for this year - being named an All-American, being among the top in the NCAA, and competing at the Olympic Trials. How did Park Tudor prepare you to succeed in college, on the track, and now in grad school? Park Tudor was phenomenal in preparing me for college. Coach (Ryan) Ritz was a fantastic coach; he loves track and field and talking about form and technique, as well as results. He shared that love of track with me, and while he pushed me hard, he kept me healthy and I never experienced burnout. He really focused on me as a holistic track athlete, teaching me the importance of diet, sleep, and doing my homework not only for my classes but for track. (College Counselor) Mr. (Joe) Fumusa was so helpful during the college recruitment process; he was almost like an agent with the energy he brought to it. He helped me set my sights higher than I might have on my own. I was very challenged academically at Park Tudor and I learned to study hard, and also learned how to ask questions. I realized that it’s not just about learning information for a test - I also learned how to think critically.

26

PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2020

Depending on how this season goes, I might continue competing and training post-collegiately. I’m considering coaching and possibly trying to compete on the World Team. I’ll complete my Master’s program in December, 2021, and I’m planning to go to medical school in the fall of 2022, so I’ll have a gap between completing my Master’s and starting med school. What advice do you have for current Park Tudor students who might want to follow in your footsteps? My mantra which has motivated me and given me an edge, is “Leave no doubt.” That means do everything to the best of your ability. When you’re training, work really hard - leave everything out there. In the classroom, do your best - leave no doubt that you could have done better. I also think that doing everything right every day adds up to making big gains. If you do the little things right, the big things go right. Finally, have big aspirations. If you don’t think you can do something, you won’t. Ultimately, you need to believe in yourself. Park Tudor at 50: Remembering the Merger of Park School and Tudor Hall

Then: Park Tudor Class of 1971

Now: Park Tudor Class of 2020

The 2020-2021 school year marks the 50th anniversary of the merger of Park School and Tudor Hall to form Park Tudor. In this issue of the Phoenix, we look back to the merger and the opening of our current campus on the site of the former Lilly Orchard.*

Another factor that played into Park School’s desire to relocate was the understanding that the population of Indianapolis was moving north. Planning for the construction of I-465 had begun in the early 1960s. Since highway planners routed I-465 nearly 12 miles north of downtown, they all but guaranteed that the suburban expansion of Indianapolis would continue in that direction. Relocating to an area closer to the new I-465 and anticipated suburbs would help to guarantee a steady flow of students in the decades ahead.

In 1964, then-president of the Park School board of trustees, Russ Ryan, wrote to the Lilly family about potentially selling their property on North College Ave. in order to build a new campus. Park’s enrollment had been increasing throughout the early 1960s, but the cost of maintaining the campus on Cold Spring Road were high and growing. The buildings were aging and required constant repair. In addition, Park School’s campus was hemmed in by Marian University, so the ability to expand was limited. In fact, Marian University approached Ryan and the rest of the Park School board to inquire about purchasing the Park School campus so that the University could continue its growth.

Ryan received a reply to his letter in early 1965. John Rauch Sr., the attorney who represented the Lilly family, asked to meet with the entire Park School board in Foster Hall on the Lilly Orchard property. At the meeting, Rauch handed over the deed to the property and told the board that Mr. Eli and Josiah K. Lilly Jr. - both graduates of Park’s predecessor Brooks School - wanted Park to have the property. Said Mr. Eli, “It is quite certain that Mr. J.K. Lilly Sr., my brother, and I would much rather see the orchard, which had meant so much to us all for 70 years, become the campus of a fine school than to have it cut into who knows what kind of real estate venture.” By May 1965, Marian University had agreed to purchase Park School’s Cold Spring Road campus, creating pressure for a merger of Park with Tudor Hall, whose campus was also adjacent to Marian’s. In fact, Mr. Eli and J.K. Lilly had foreseen PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2020

27

FEATURE from the moment they decided to donate the Lilly Orchard land to Park. However, Alma Whitford and the trustees of Tudor Hall were not as eager to pursue a merger with Park School. In fact, Whitford and the Tudor Hall board were working on a master plan for Tudor Hall for the years 1965-1975, addressing enrollment projections along with instructional, financial and construction plans for the next decade. This plan called for new buildings on Tudor Hall’s Cold Spring campus, and in September 1966 the school even broke ground on a new $300,000 residence hall. Clearly, at that point Tudor Hall had no intention of merging with Park School. However, in the mid-60s Tudor Hall faced many of the same challenges as Park School. While enrollment was growing, expenses were increasing even faster. In the meantime, Park School proceeded with plans to move its campus to Lilly Orchard, hosting a groundbreaking at the new campus in September 1966, unveiling plans for a Lower School, Middle School and Upper School, as well as a gymnasium. A $400,000 gift by alumnus Allen Clowes for a commons facility on the new campus with a dining area, kitchen, reception and assembly hall kicked off fundraising efforts. Park School moved to its new campus in September 1967 with a minimum of upheaval. During the first several years on the campus, students, faculty and staff dodged construction equipment and crews. The first buildings to open were the Lower School, which doubled as classroom space for the high school, and Clowes Commons. Construction continued throughout the 1967-68 and 1968-69 school years on the gymnasium and Upper and Middle School buildings.

28

PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2020

Unfortunately, Tudor Hall’s fortunes had taken a downward turn in the late 1960s. The new dormitory that opened in 1967 had not been the financial boon that Tudor Hall had envisioned. Nationwide, the number of boarding students in girls’ preparatory schools began a precipitous decline after 1967, which negatively affected Tudor Hall enrollment and the school’s bottom line. Still, Tudor Hall’s leadership remained hopeful that the school could survive independently. Said Alma Whitford 1970, “Not until March 1969 did I foresee the inevitability of coeducation and of merger, which I then quickly recommended to the officers of this board.” Tudor Hall’s board concurred with Whitford’s assessment and trustee objections to the combination of the two schools, which had been all but unthinkable two years before, had all but evaporated by the end of the 1968-69 school year, and on September 22, 1969 the boards of trustees for Park School and Tudor Hall voted unanimously to merge at the beginning of the 1970-71 school year. Park School headmaster William McCluskey was named headmaster of the combined school; Alma Whitford assisted McCluskey, taught several classes and counseled students. Walter W. Kuhn Jr., 1969-1970 president of the Tudor Hall board of trustees, became the first president of the Park Tudor School board of trustees. When school opened the week after Labor Day in 1970, nearly 575 students had enrolled in grades K-12, well in excess of the combined enrollment of the two schools at the end of the 1969-70 school year. “The merger is such a splendid success,” said McCluskey just after the beginning of the 1970-71 school year. “No school in the nation has done this, with such a smooth and interesting manner, and we’re delighted with the plan.” * Excerpted from “Park Tudor School: The First 100 Years”
