Reb Stevenson blogs and makes videos for Canada.com. She probably ought to be objective, but when you grow up in Parksville and Qualicum Beach, it’s hard not to play favourites. Reb, who continues to visit on a regular basis to top-up her relationship with the beach and gossip with the seagulls, wrote the introductions for each section in this guide.

Where in the world is Oceanside?

While you flip through this guide and travel in the central Vancouver Island region, you are bound to see reference to a place called “Oceanside”. You can watch ‘Keeping Up with The Kardashians’ anywhere ...but when you’re in our neck of the woods, staying inside is practically illegal. Memories are made by getting that tush outside and interacting with the unique scenery. The good news: in Parksville and Qualicum Beach you can do that yearround thanks to the gentle climate. We get plenty of sun, but don’t eschew the rain - it has its own sly charm. I’m not satisfied ‘til I’ve sauntered down Qualicum Beach in a light drizzle.

If you visit the Parksville/ Qualicum Beach area in the Springtime, you’ll witness other guests of a different feather.

From approximately March through May, the shores of Parksville and Qualicum Beach host tens of thousands of Brant Geese as they stop to rest and feed during their annual migration from Mexico to Alaska. There is a Brant viewing area on the west-end shoreline of Qualicum Beach with a raised bird-watching platform that’s perfect for taking photographs of this lovely sea goose.

There is also a Brant Festival full of lots of great activities for people of all ages.

My second trip to the beach was on a windy day and it turned out to be the best day ever. There were so many kites. The colors were amazing. The variety and styles of kites were a spectacle to see. But the best part was the two guys with fighting kites and the control they had was amazing. Visit Qualicum Beach on a windy day for a sight you will never forget.

This fall, a few girlfriends got together for treatments at the Grotto Spa, followed by dinner at the Treetop Tapas & Grill. Dining in robes and slippers was an outof-the-ordinary, surprisingly comfortable experience that I would recommend.

I enter “Aquaterre Spa” and am greeted by a curvy tank full of fish swimming in peaceful serenity. I am here for “Cleopatra‘s wrapture”.

A granite bubble bath full of rose petals, being drizzled in warm champagne oil and ending with a light snackI walk out of there feeling like I have just tasted a little piece of “Heaven”.

After long days of hiking and adventuring, I always look for the hotel’s Jacuzzi.

Typically, this is a small circular structure off the busy hotel pool. Imagine my surprise as I stepped into the “Grotto” at TighNa-Mara: mineral pools in a cave-like setting, complete with a waterfall.

What more could I ask for? Oh yes... incrediblypriced package deals!

Here they are in order from East to West!

Beachcomber Regional Park Take Northwest Bay Rd to Claudet Road, then Marina Way. Spectacular views west across Craig Bay to Parksville and Mount Arrowsmith and north across the Strait of Georgia to the mainland coastal mountains.

Madrona Point Take Northwest Bay Road to Beaver Creek Wharf Road, then left on Madrona Drive until the end. Enjoy the sunset from this rocky outcrop!

Rathtrevor Provincial Park Access to Rathtrevor Provincial Park is off Highway 19A towards the east end of Parksville. You can stay at one of several hotels/resorts located adjacent to the park on Resort Drive including Beach Acres, Oceanside Village Resort, Ocean Trails, Madrona Beach Resort, Tigh-NaMara, Ocean Sands, and Sunrise Ridge.

Parksville Beach Access to Parksville Beach is off Highway 19A in mid-town Parksville. There are several great places to stay on Parksville Bay including Beach Club Resort, Quality Resort Bayside, Paradise Sea Shell Motel & Paradise Adventure RV Park and the Sea Edge Motel. Our Facebook friends noted a couple of favourite sunset-gazing spots along this expanse of shoreline - the boardwalk that starts at The Beach Club and the old hovercraft pad at the east end of the Parksville Community Park.

Consider popping into the Shady French Creek Marina Located just off Highway 19A as you head Waterfront Restaurant & Pub or Thalassa west out of Parksville, this tends to be an at Qualicum Beach Golf Course - they’ve both got amazing views! under-hyped location for enjoying the view! A great spot to watch the sun go McFeely & Surfside down.

Before you drive west out of Qualicum Beach, turn right onto Kincade Road Columbia Beach and head towards McFeely and Surfside Just past the French Creek Marina, you’ll find Columbia Beach. Turn onto Columbia Drives. A couple of great access points here - pick your perfect spot!

Drive to navigate to the water. This is a nice, level neighbourhood, perfect for Mount Arrowsmith a leisurely stroll or bike ride before you Feeling ambitious? How can you beat a settle into your perfect spot to catch the mountaintop for a sunset view? Access to last rays of the day!
