he year was 1987, and expat Kiwi Rod Millen was at the foot of Pikes Peak, strapping himself into his latest and wildest creation — a 4WD turbo 13B peripheral-port (PP) tube-framed FC RX-7. What lay before him was the world’s most gruelling hill climb, 20km of snaking gravel ascending to over 4200m above sea level. No tarmac, no barriers, and sheer drops that offer little more than certain death to anyone sliding off.

He placed third — it was the first year Millen tasted the sweet flavour of victory champagne at such altitude — and that began a career chase.

Two years later, he returned to the mountain with the FC, but, this time, it was powered by the latest Mazda rotary offering, a 20B turbo coupled with the latest Electromotive electronics. But what made the FC a success was the 4WD system developed by Rod and his team for the early RX-7s he’d campaigned in stage rallies.

Despite the hot-rod nature of the build, the system gave the Mazda Quattro-beating capabilities, and 1991 saw Rod take the class win and the class record. However, his time with Mazda was coming to an end, and, with a move to Toyota and the famed Celica, he sold the FC, a very uncharacteristic move for Rod, who tends to keep the majority of his cars.

No one knows what it sold for, but the price tag was rumoured to be around US$250K, paid by rotary guru Isami Amemiya of RE Amemiya fame.

Once it landed in Japan, the car was stripped and rebuilt for the famous Option magazine zero to 300kph time trials, and it debuted — in new colours and with a ton of new parts from Trust and GReddy — at the 1997 Tokyo Auto Salon.

What happened to the big-dollar build after this point is a little unclear. But one thing is for sure: it was neglected big time and left sitting outside the workshop, where it might have rotted away to nothing had it not been for the very keen eye of a rotary legend —

hat is it that defines you as a car nut? Is it the constant grease under your fingernails, the empty bank account, the fact that you have shined your wheels for the fifth time this week or spend most nights as a recluse in your shed, pouring every last spare moment into your project? When it comes to ’Naki engineer Brady, we reckon it’s his devotion to perfection, the one-man pursuit of which has seen his RX-2 sedan remain in an almost constant state of evolution over the past eight years, and it’s a pursuit that Brady openly admits may never stop.

“I picked it up as a uncertified, no reg, no WOF car with a standard 13B motor with an injection set-up. The day after buying it, I pulled the motor out, and, with a friend’s help, we bridge-ported and built the NA [naturally aspirated] set-up in the shed.”

On the flip side of that coin, if you love all things high-revving, lightweight, that go ‘dort-dort’, and are practically circuitready street racers, get a load of the calendar staple that is the annual NZHondas.com North Island Mega Meet on the Hampton Downs National Circuit.

No matter the Civic, Integra, Accord, or other Honda you prefer, there was some form of it there, and, more often than not, it had been engine swapped with something else from within the family. Alongside all the street cars were several race-prepared Hondas, making their way around the track among the pack just to mix things up a bit and school the less experienced.

alk pit lane at any round of the Demon Energy D1NZ National Drifting Championship and you will not only be greeted by a wash of colourful liveries fighting for your attention — dig a little deeper into the engine bays of the beasts, and you will find a weird and wonderful array of solutions to the same exact problem. Following the worldwide trend/evolution over the past 13 seasons of our national series, power figures have continued to rise, now reaching extraordinary levels. This

season, the average power for a Pro-spec car is 471kW, which is why drifting is touted as being the most powerful tin-top motorsport on the planet.

Now we’re past the midway point of the season, we decided to take a closer look at the power plants of the front runners. What we found surprised us, as, unlike series overseas — which tend to see not much other than the mighty LS — back home in New Zealand, we do things a little differently and have a wide range of engine choices in our current top 10.
