WORKSHOPS ARE GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO — BUT THAT PROBABLY ISN’T WEBSITES. MOTORCENTRAL JOINS THE DOTS there. You have got no contact point with online customers. The missed business opportunity is significant. Even having a website but a nonmobile-friendly one, tells your prospective customers you don’t really care about them and their experience so they should go and look for someone else.

As for BuyerScore, this has been an ongoing success across motor vehicle dealerships. It also meets the need for workshops and service centres to efficiently gather ratings and reviews from verified buyers of their service. This is great for internal purposes, but to also get their ratings and reviews in front of new customers. Being rated and reviewed is a massive influence in decision making of whom customers do business with. The importance of this is huge now, but it will grow significantly more over the next few years.

Workshops are good at what they do, but that doesn’t often include marketing themselves effectively on the web, or streamlining the transactions and systems technology that will give them more time working with and for customers.

This month we talked to a couple of businesses powering up the back end of workshops and dealerships.

Winning the Automaster tyre changer put the shine on a bad day at Pohutukawa Motors. They entered Auto Channel’s prize draw which ran over the last two months to win a new tyre changer worth over $3600 and turned up trumps.

Administrator Sarah Smart says it was a Friday and parts hadn’t turned up, making it ‘one of those days’ until workshop manager Tyler Williamson took a call saying the garage had won the new tyre machine.

“That put a smile on everyone’s faces,” she said. Especially as owner Phil, who was away on leave, had said previously he needed to replace the old one.

This month, we will be spreading the joy among 20 winners, offering 10 double passes to Ford v Ferrari, the new film starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, about Ford’s challenge to Ferrari’s dominance of the Le Mans 24-hour race.

TWO-THIRDS OF MOTORISTS ARE OPPOSED TO TRACKING DEVICES BEING INSTALLED IN NEW CARS web-based poll from the UK’s leading independent car retailer found 70 per cent of drivers were against the introduction of socalled black boxes into new cars. Mercedes-Benz recently hit the headlines after revealing it had fitted similar devices in its cars without warning drivers in advance.

The news comes in the wake of EU proposals that could see all new cars made in Europe from 2022 fitted with location-tracking devices that would monitor a driver’s speed, driving behaviour as well as use of vehicle safety features. Drivers would not be able to switch off these devices and the data collected could potentially be shared across countries.

Mark Carpenter, CEO of Motorpoint, said: “It’s quite clear from our survey that drivers as a whole

are against the introduction of ‘Big Brother’–style technology in their cars. While the technology does bring with it the ability to learn from our driving habits, there are serious implications in the way personal data is collected which need addressing before such tracking devices become commonplace on British roads.”

“For electric vehicles in everyday use, it is important to obtain as much range as possible from each battery charge,” Bert Hellwig, head of system house at ZF’s E-Mobility division stated.

ZF paired the two-stage shift element with a new electric motor rated at 140kW, but it could be combined with more powerful electric motors rated up to 250kW. The new two-speed drive consumes less energy, extending range by up to five per cent over a one-speed unit. Shifts take place at 70kph. It is also possible for vehicle manufacturers to devise

other shift strategies.

“Until now, with electric motors, vehicle manufacturers have had to choose between high initial torque and a high top speed,” Hellwig explained.

“We are now resolving this conflict and the new drive will be compatible for performance and heavier vehicles — for example passenger cars towing a trailer.”

Carmakers could go for an extended range using the same size accumulator or use a smaller accumulator.

F’s new two-speed electric drive integrates an advanced electric motor with a shift element and appropriate power electronics, extending the driving range for each battery charge.

The compact design suits compact-class cars but it could also be scaled up for use in sports and performance vehicles.

Much like humans, a vehicle’s joints suffer wear and tear overtime. For the human skeleton (chassis), the medical term osteoarthritis is the wearing of cartilage resulting in a ‘bone against bone’ joint.

Kumho simplifies its car product range KUMHO FINDS A PATTERN THAT WORKS FOR ALMOST EVERYONE ver the last 10 years Kumho has been building tyres to suit many different customer applications but over time this caused a proliferation of tread patterns.

Sales manager for Kumho distributor Blairs Super Tyre Distributors Mike Baldwin, said Kumho took a fresh look at this issue and has developed a new passenger pattern called the Solus TA31. The new pattern incorporated the best features of the other patterns to produce a tyre that’s particularly well suited to New Zealand’s all-season demands.

After extensive testing, Kumho released the TA31 in 51 sizes.

Availability of the TA31 range was limited in New Zealand for a while but the complete range is now available. The TA31 is a non-directional pattern all season tyre. This durable tyre along with Kumho TA11 asymmetric tyre will account for 90 per cent of the Kumho range in the passenger car range.

In the high-performance range, Kumho are introducing the Ecsta PA51, an asymmetric allseason tyre made in 31 sizes. It will meet 90 per cent of the demand for Kumho performance tyres in New Zealand. Several sizes are available in New Zealand, but more sizes are being added to this range monthly.

Mike says these new patterns will make it much easier for dealers to provide tyres suitable for New Zealand customers. Some specialist users might still require specific Kumho tyres for specific jobs, available ex-Kumho, but stocks of these other patterns will be limited in New Zealand.

For example, the automated front collision avoidance system can automatically take evasive action when manual actions in the face of oncoming traffic aren’t performed in time.

F has developed the world’s first pre-crash occupant protection system which includes an external side airbag that can reduce the consequences of a side impact accident by up to 40 per cent.

The bag is only deployed if high-performance sensors detect an unavoidable side-impact collision.

According to ZF, the biggest challenge in developing the system was reliably recognizing an unavoidable collision in time. The system has approximately 150 milliseconds to make the decision to deploy the airbag and fill it — literally in the blink of an eye.

Connected cameras, radar, and lidar detect the threat then algorithms within the system software decide whether or not a collision is unavoidable, and whether or not deploying the bag would be beneficial. The airbag, which has five to eight times the volume of a driver airbag, expands upwards from the side sill to form an additional crumple zone in the door area.

Cleaner production of TRW brake pads AS WELL AS REDUCING CONTAMINANTS IN BRAKE PADS, TRW IS MAKING MANUFACTURING MORE SUSTAINABLE F has introduced powder adhesive technology in the production of its TRW brake pads, which means the pads can be made without the use of organic solvents.

Solvents have harmful volatiles; there are environmental costs in their production and additional costs and risk in transport and handling of these dangerous chemicals.

In developing and using a dry powder coating to bond pad material to brake backing plates, TRW has eliminated the use of solvents in this process, and created a cleaner working environment for employees without affecting the quality of the product.

ZF estimates the process has avoided the production, transport, and use of 150 tonnes of solvents.

This interchangeable tow ball system is often copied but if you value what you tow, choosing the tried and true original will be a sound investment.

Convert-a-Ball is the answer when you need to go from a 17⁄8-inch ball to 50mm or even 25⁄16-inch tow ball to suit different types of trailer socket hitches. Workshops looking to improve efficiency may want to tap into the experience of one of the biggest names in the automotive aftermarket.

Repco’s Workshop Solutions team offers an end to end design and build solution for automotive workshops and national equipment sales manager Kevin Odgers says they bring a vast amount of experience to bear.

He says whether workshop operators wants to upgrade just some of their equipment, reconfigure their layout or spec a new space from scratch, it’s worthwhile getting a fresh set of eyes on the project — especially eyes belonging to a team that has seen more workshops than most people have had hot dinners. They have hundreds of years of experience between them.

Kevin says it’s too easy when upgrading equipment like tyre machines to replace like for like, especially if it has proven perfectly satisfactory in the past. But automation and electronic controls are making big gains in a lot of workshop gear, not just in removing some manual tasks but in taking a fresh approach which simplifies the whole job.

And, he says, if you are making any kind of change in your facilities it’s worth taking a strategic approach to the layout.

“Time is money and, for example, you can save a lot of time reducing the distance someone has to walk to complete a job,” says Kevin. “Businesses that do well are always looking to improve efficiency and that means taking a look at the whole process.

“Don’t just put the oil bar there because that’s where it’s always been. It could be well worthwhile installing some new permanent piping and installing dispensers in other locations,” says Kevin.

Repco’s service includes layout of services like water, oil and air, not just machinery. Everything should be planned for ease of use.

Location of lifts is a straightforward example.

Shuttle a vehicle backwards and forwards to get on and off a lift is wasting productive time.

Even what tools to have in the toolbox and under the bench affects the ease of work. Most people like to surround themselves with everything they might need but studies have shown it is much more efficient to have just the tools and consumables you need every day within easy reach in each work bay.

Gear you might need a couple of times a week can be stored out of the work bay and gear and spares you only want occasionally should be well out of the way in a store room. Removing physical and even visual clutter makes it easier for everyone to do their job.

The type of work being done will also affect the design and investment. Kevin cites the example of a pre-delivery inspection workshop. It had used two post hoists previously but a detailed study of the time involved showed that four-post hoists offered better access. They saved enough time on each car that, once it had done the numbers, the business doubled its planned investment in lifts and moved to four-post hoists.

Kevin says the team works with professional designers to produce workshop plans based on Repco’s 97 years of experience and insight, and workflow studies where appropriate. And this is another area where Repco’s size and range pays dividends — tailoring the equipment solutions exactly to the need.

Being a safety critical component, Repco undertook a full end-to-end sourcing project to ensure the new line of brake rotors met Repco’s and the wider GPC Asia Pacific group’s stringent quality processes, to reinforce the brand’s reputation for products customers can rely on.

Category manager for GPC Asia Pacific Josh Strang says the product line had to meet Repco’s quality and technical requirements, being equal to or exceeding the OEM equivalent with end of line testing carried out to check criteria like run out and disc thickness variation — just a couple of the 19 dimensions checked during this process.

This current range of 350-plus part numbers covers European, Japanese, Korean manufacturers.

“And this range is continually growing to meet the demand of the ever changing New Zealand vehicle parc,” Josh says.

Volkswagen sets economy record on ‘The Green Hell’ SOME OF THE BIGGEST NUMBERS GENERATED WERE IN G FORCES olkswagen’s fully electric ID R raced through the 20.8km ‘Green Hell’ of Nürburgring’s Nordschleife in just 6:05.336 minutes and at an average speed of 204.96kph — and used just 24.7kWh of energy.

The ID R was not only significantly faster than a GT3 sports car but also consumed only a quarter of the energy over the course of one lap. The ID R is the flag bearer of the ID R family which Volkswagen is launching on the streets from 2020.

The Volkswagen ID R recorded the fastest lap of the Nordschleife, or northern loop, ever by an electric car on 3 June 2019. Driver Romain Dumas was subjected to centrifugal forces equating to about three and a half times his own body weight whilst cornering — the instruments recorded up to 3.49g.

“Two major differences between the ID R and the sports car I drive in 24-hour races are the considerably higher cornering speeds and the shorter braking distances,” says Dumas. The top value of 3.49g was recorded during the left-right combination in the Kallenhard section of the circuit. Braking into the Aremberg corner, the ID R achieved a deceleration force of 2.7g.

the Kallenhard section increased the inertial weight of Dumas’s head to over 20kg. “To simulate that kind of situation, I have fitted an old helmet with weights. I use it to train my neck muscles in the basement of my house,” says Dumas.

The ID R hit a top speed of 273kph. Dumas came through the famous Caracciola-Karussell at 83kph — the lowest speed recorded on his record lap. The average speed for the lap was a mighty 204.96kph.

which is now measuring the force (kgf) rather than weight (kg) up to the moment slip occurs, and it will show the maximum force your hand could transfer through its grip on the table (or the tyre on the road).

Lean harder on the hand and repeat the test and of course the force required to make the hand slip is higher. Instead of a hand on the table, in our drawings we use a box to represent a tyre.

When the weight on the wheel is low and the grip coefficient between the contact patch and road surface is also low, it is relatively easy to make the box slide. We can measure the sideways force needed to overcome the grip coefficient in Newtons. Kilograms of weight at the earth’s surface can be roughly translated for Newtons : 1Kg = 10N, so 1000Kg (1T) = 10,000N (10KN) The scales show a heavier vehicle will have higher brake force readings before the wheel loses grip and locks up. A heavier vehicle must also generate a higher brake force as there is more mass to stop.

Doing the same test on a grippier surface, such as a tar-sealed road, it will take more force (Newtons), to make the box slip across the surface.

SUSPENSION AND TYRES ARE DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN A VEHICLE’S GRIP ON THE ROAD BUT THEY SIMPLY CAN’T WORK ON BROKEN ROADS ECS trainer and researcher Herbert Leijen contributed the following technical article on the mechanics of grip — and the implications for road users and taxpayers.

We at AECS spend a lot of time on the road in New Zealand and Australia delivering equipment and training. I drove home after my last training seminar in Auckland on the Napier-Taupo Road in the middle of a clear night. I was on an unrestricted part of the road, in a moderate left-hand bend when the right-hand wheels of my van got caught in a series of potholes and lost grip. My car shifted across the centre line into the path of an oncoming truck. Thanks to the skills of the truck driver I am still alive. My family thanks you, even though I do not know who you are. No need to state that it started me thinking about what just happened and the what-ifs.

Potholes — level 1

SPENDING MONEY I do not like spending money. That is a personal thing. I most certainly do not like spending it twice, paying road user charges (RUC); and for suspension parts destroyed by unsafe roads. Nor should business owners run the risk of seriously injuring or losing one of our valued staff. I also do not like to be taken to court as an employer for providing unsafe working conditions for my staff.

We need to ensure that if the government, if it continues to take RUC funds, spends that money on the infrastructure we all need and use! We are

This test shows the effect of the grip (grip coefficient = µ). It does not need stating that on an icy road the grip coefficient is low, and less brake force can be applied before grip is lost.

RBM TRAINING Let me explain technically what happens when a tyre drives through a pothole in detail. At AECS we provide a government-approved RBM (roller brake machine) training for COF vehicle inspectors.

We explain grip and brake force (or cornering force) as a hand on smooth kitchen table.

So, back to potholes and bumps in the road.

Think about what happens when your wheel drops into a pothole. When you are at full braking force but with no weight on the wheel, it will lock up. The road surface in the pothole is loose chip (very low grip coefficient), so that does not do anything to help to get things under control. While ABS might activate, it can only extend the braking distance, compared with braking on a good quality road.

How about during cornering?

You drive along, knowing how much speed in the corners is safe for the vehicle you are driving, but suddenly you encounter potholes in the dark.

With no grip, braking and cornering forces are out of control and you are in the hands of your fellow road users or Lady Luck.

Then coming out of the pothole creates massive upwards force, compressing the suspension’s spring, briefly increasing grip.

However, the wheel will be launched upward too far, pushing the whole vehicle upwards.

The suspension’s spring relaxes and so does the downward force on the tyre. The reduced downward force means grip is still missing. It takes some time before the transferable force is back to normal after any bump in the road.

That is why I left my lane in the bend that night.

Please note my late model van has ABS and stability control (ESP) and near new shocks.

You cannot test both brakes and suspension together, only ever individually. There are too many variables involved with dynamometric testing for it to be considered a measured and repeatable test. Speed of the vehicle, bounce of the vehicle up onto the tester, angle of driving over the tester, driver distraction and the point at which the brakes are applied (positioning) would all need to be exactly the same each test for the results to be reliable and repeatable.

AECS STT10 EUSAMA SUSPENSION TESTER IN ACTION

Let’s look at this a bit more scientifically.

Suspension is best tested on a Eusama (European Shock Absorber Manufacturers Association) suspension tester. The association of manufacturers (of testers and shock absorbers) have all agreed on the testing principle involving a platform vibrating at variable frequency while measuring the weight on that platform. Every other means of testing has been rejected internationally.

Suspension movement, its effectiveness and its relationship to braking performance cannot be properly tested on, for example, a simple brake plate (dynamometric) type machine or its equivalent, the ‘bounce tester’. Plate testers can only test the suspension and all its components at one frequency of oscillation. It is obvious that this bears no relationship to the real world complete with all its potholes and undulations.

When we test a vehicle’s suspension on a Eusama tester ideally the weight of the tire on the platform remains constant. However, that is almost never the case. Please look at the suspension test results of my van with 20,000km genuine front shocks — so run in but not worn yet.

If we just use (for ease) round figures from the graph: • At (B) Static wheel weight 700kg, grip coefficient between good tar seal and tyre 0.7µ. We can transfer a maximum brake or cornering force of 700kg x 9.8 (g) x 0.7µ = 4.802KN onto the road.

• At (A) with a dynamic weight of 1000kg, we can transfer a maximum brake or cornering force of 1000kg x 9.8 (g) x 0.7µ = 6.86KN onto the road.

• However most concerning, at (C) with a dynamic weight of 400kg we can transfer a maximum brake or cornering force of 400kg x 9.8 (g) x 0.7µ = 2.744KN onto the road.

It is during the relaxing of the spring (at C), where the brake and cornering force has been reduced to almost half of the brake and cornering force you would expect on a smooth road.

Please note: these high frequency forces are measured on the Eusama tester are at 16Hz. A high-speed pothole edge creates a much higher frequency and therefore bigger weight swings, compounding the problem to the point that the wheel leaves the road!.

Obviously there is no ability to transfer force to the road when the tyre is not making contact with the road.

Think of a bottom ball joint of a McPherson strut type of front suspension hammering through a pothole. A suspension part or tyre carcass can break at any stage on the quality of roads we have currently, and a WOF or COF inspection is only checking from time to time. This is also creating a safety risk which would be unlikely to occur if the roads were properly maintained.

Let’s also not forget the recent increases in fuel prices nationally and regionally which came firstly as an unwelcome surprise and ultimately through tax increases. This increased tax would, we were told, be used in the most part towards infrastructure improvement across the country. How long, I wonder must we wait for this to also become a reality.

I hope you do not mind I have written about something different this time, but it bothers me how we are currently on a downward spiral with road safety with, in my mind, one clear cause: lack of road maintenance.

I expect decent road maintenance for: 1. road safety — I want my staff and myself to come back home alive and uninjured, after every trip 2. good quality roads to reduce wear on the safety critical items on my vehicles. Every bump and every pothole wear the suspension components, until the vehicle is not fit for the road any more 3. efficient open road speed; not restricted to lower values so the government can reduce spending on road maintenance.

A sharp edge in the tar seal, from for example a pothole, is regarded as a very high frequency movement of the suspension.

All the door aperture trim and boot lining is removed to check the structure including integrity of seam welds, suspension mounting points, and to look for evidence of crash repairs. If a vehicle has been crash damaged, an extra hole punched through the firewall or a replacement quarter panel has welded in, this shop will find it.

are off, the plastic inner guards are also removed, again to check suspension mounting points and for any damage, repairs or corrosion.The company’s technicians measure the thickness of brake discs but they also check that the pads are OEM parts, or if they are aftermarket, they have the relevant compliance markings.

“Ironically, those parts on a vehicle that has passed entry certification can be replaced with aftermarket parts that don’t comply and still get a warrant because the WOF inspection is just looking at serviceability, not manufacturing standards,” says Frank Willett, director of Penrose Compliance Centre.

“Compliance is one of the most thorough vehicle

checks anywhere in the world and it is certainly the most thorough any vehicle will undergo during its life in New Zealand.”

Frank would know. He has been in the business for more than 20 years and is currently CEO of vehicle shipping company Autohub, which also owns Penrose Compliance Centre. He actually installed the rolling road brake tester in this same workshop floor when he worked here 20 years ago.

He came to Autohub after a time as chief executive of VINZ. “Almost any accident damage will fail a car,” says Frank. Those cars then have to go through a separate inspection by a specialist repair certifier.

A ‘clean’ car, from driving it into one of the 11 inspection bays to back out again, can take around two and a half hours. “It’s a volume business,” says Frank. If a car fails, the owner is contacted and required repairs are discussed.

The seven mechanics and technicians in the workshop will carry out minor work or replacement of brake pads, shocks or tyres but any specialist tasks are outsourced.

They also carry out WOF checks, or replace oil and filters as a pre-sale service for car yards but the actual certification inspections are carried out by independent inspectors from another company.

The Penrose team’s main role is stripping down the vehicle for the inspectors.

One of the vehicles in the workshop when we visited turned out to have been repaired, so that underwent a repair assessment. The paperwork, an essential part of the process, showed function tests of a range of electronic systems had also been ordered. While driver assistance systems are prevalent on later model imported cars, they aren’t checked or calibrated as part of a normal inspection.

“We focus very much on what’s required by the regulations and that tends to be basic structural and mechanical safety,” says Frank. “Almost any accident damage will fail a car.”

Not all repairs make the grade. Frank says some overseas repairers will attach a new guard but instead of spot welding the new panel to the door seam, they will braze them on. That ruins the car’s structural integrity in that area and, in another crash, that panel could just pop off. That repair would have

to be redone, or the car will be rejected.

“We get a number of shipbacks,” says Frank.

That is, cars that can’t be certified. “They only have scrap value here and that might only be $500 on a $20,000 car.” That means shipping them back to the market they came from can be the best and only option for the disappointed owner.

Double cab utes imported from Thailand have caught out some buyers. Vehicles assembled there for use in that market don’t meet the standards required in New Zealand or other markets. They may only need a single airbag; have different steering setups and brakes, and often lighter construction. There’s no way to bring them up to New Zealand standards so the best option would be to ship them back.

Frank advises any importer to check the vehicle they want to bring in complies with one of the main international standards recognized here: Japan’s JIS, Europe’s UNECE, Australia’s ADR of the United States’ FMVSS, and not just a ‘general market’ standard.

Countries that don’t insist on one of those standards will register ‘general market’ vehicles.

Those countries include Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Mexico and Thailand.

Importing modified vehicles from Australia can also be problematic, says Frank. Compliance with Australian mod rules doesn’t give it a pass here.

and modified cars will need to be recertified in many cases.

Another tip: don’t rely on an overseas WOF inspections. New Zealand requirements are tougher than in overseas jurisdictions. For example, corrosion is viewed more seriously here than in the UK where they see and tolerate higher levels as a result of the practice of salting the roads. Vehicles that pass there will fail here.

Most failures are age-related: tyres, worn brake linings, steering joints and suspension bushes.

Occasionally seat belts are frayed. Chipped or damaged windscreens are less common because roads in most overseas markets are in better condition. “Most of the damaged windscreens we see here are from being transported locally on New Zealand roads.”

While there was the odd luxury brand car in the yard the most common vehicles through the workshop were Nissan Tiidas, Honda Fits, Mazda Axcelas and hybrids, especially Toyota’s Prius.

“If you are Uber driver you must have a Prius, apparently,” says Frank.

Seeing this process makes you wonder why New Zealand-new cars, unless they have a full service history, command such a premium in the second-hand market — apart from the problems with the radio bandwidth. Anyone who has seen this process can be confident that a properly certified fresh import is a safe and straight car.

Despite being the earliest generation in a long list of rapid automotive development over the last few decades — which typically means that they’re slower, poorer handling, less reliable, and more dangerous — old cars not only continue to exist today but also to thrive.

Why? Automakers don’t make ’em like they used to.

Back when most of those that can be considered kyusha were designed, it was an analogue world. A designer’s strongest tool was the pencil, and endless sheets of paper were sacrificed in the pursuit of perfection. That physical connection allowed them to craft elegant shapes, perfect flowing lines, and sharp panel terminations that are simply impossible to replicate behind a keyboard. Metal framework and wooden bucks directly influenced styling cues, and panels were stitched together by human hands, not robotic arms repeating precoded instructions.

The care and attention to detail that went into producing cars may have slowly disappeared from the design and manufacturing processes as automakers chased better profit margins and faster turnarounds, but the love affair with kyusha has seemingly never faded. And making sure that there’s at least one example continuing the legacy, Auckland’s Neel Singh has spent the better part of a decade chasing the kyusha dream, which has culminated in an exacting period-correct restomod

of his 1971 Datsun 1600 — also known as a ‘Bluebird’ or ‘510’. The self-confessed Honda-fiend explains that, after having run through half of the country’s Integra supply, he became increasingly interested in bygone eras of carburetted, smallcapacity screamers and styling that was the result of painstaking imagination: “Having that heavy Honda background, I wanted to change things up a little. Considering my options, all I could think about was growing up as a kid and seeing my dad [AJ] daily-driving various Datsun models. One of his in particular that I had a soft spot for was a 1600, so it was an easy call to build one in a way that I knew he’d appreciate, too.”

Neel searched for nearly two years before he found the right example to kick the build off with, settling on a matte black ’69, which he says suited his west Auckland locale well. Over the next couple of years, it would serve to familiarize him with the chassis and the L-series engine offering, but, when it came to putting in the love it needed,

the unknown state under its traditional ‘quickfix’ paintwork was too much of a gamble. He considered going all out and attempting a Honda K-series rear-wheel-drive conversion as a nod to his Honda heritage, and, at one point, it even sat over a set of rare Mugen M7s, but the fate of the ‘matty b special’ was sealed when a freshly paneled-and-painted specimen appeared for sale in Dunedin. Looking over two Datsuns in his driveway, Neel was convinced to pursue the kyusha style, choosing to stick with the L-series running gear, and for good reason.

You see, while the newly acquired ’71 boasted a healthy factory example of the 1.6-litre L16 that the model is named after, the ’69 already had a few tricks up its sleeve in the engine bay that it would soon donate. As common with this era of Datsun, the ‘69s bottom end was found to have been swapped out for a two-litre L20B unit sourced from the later 610 Bluebird. This manages to offer a serious punch more torque over its 1600

counterpart and with a factory forged crank, is near-on bulletproof. Sitting atop, you’ll find an SSSvariant of the L16 head, which is favoured in Datsun circles for the more aggressive camshaft and larger ports from the factory. Like the block, it’s undergone a full rebuild and now packs a custom 282-degree reground cam, iSky Racing dual valve springs and retainers to ensure it revs. Match this with the wild high compression ratio that a L16/20 combination produces, it makes for a potent recipe.

It delivers everything we’ve come to expect from an old car. The new twin Weber 45mm side-draughts gasp for fresh air with a deep-toned aggression at every blip of the accelerator, and the two-inch stainless-steel exhaust echoes the rasp of spent gasses rearwards with force. It makes all the right noises and feels silly rapid, despite the fact that it will never set any speed records, and you won’t find it pulling lengths on much at the flicker of the green light. But that was never the point. The package is serious kit for the era that the car comes from, so, beyond that, it has no real need to compete with more modern offerings performance-wise. After all, it is knocking on 50 years old. It was this rationale that saw Neel form each and every modification, focusing on achieving a period-correct finish.

That respect is evident within the Datsun’s engine bay, where Neel has gone to great lengths to give it one hell of a tidy up while simultaneously ensuring that you are still able to see all the components that you’ve come to expect when lifting the bonnet. The carbs take pride of place in the freshly shaved and resprayed bay — as they always have done — and critical components such as the ignition leads, fuel lines, and coolant feeds are all in plain view. However, you’ll struggle to find any trace of the custom wiring loom. Notice the electronic distributor or the relocated battery?

Hell, even the viscous fan has been traded in for an electric example. It’s this attention to retaining just enough of the familiar pieces that gives the appearance of a completely functional engine package while tricking the eye into not noticing all the unimportant bits that have been hidden away.

It’s this effect that has created such a striking engine bay, and that only continues when you step back from the front end to take in the car as a whole.

proportional to the car’s smaller frame, and it ultimately helps swallow the refurbished and widened set of SSR Star Shark rollers that the Datsun sits over with ease. While much of the body remains as it was when it rolled off the factory floor, the factory lines are only complemented further by the new front and rear chrome bumpers and a pairing of chrome sill strips. The SSS Super Sonic–optioned front grille, in combination with an equally as poignant chin lip that’s ripped straight from circuit racing, adds a good whack of sharpness to the front end too. And, despite already having been through the body shop before his ownership, Neel has had the entire car hammered to an exacting millimetre of straightness and resprayed in Nissan Grey Metallic to satisfy his OCD. The inside of the cabin hasn’t escaped the same level of attention either, with a pair of Datsun Competition leather buckets, sitting over reproduction burgundy carpet, that matches the dyed door cards.

No matter what angle you manage to catch a glimpse of it from, it’s hard not to be drawn into the car and want to fulfill the desire to see more and more. The finished product cannot be described as anything but the paying of respect to old car style.

It’s careful enhancement of a car from a bygone era without forgetting the pencil and paper that it originally came from and, more important, one less example that will be lost to the passing of time.

The Cablecraft system — also used by Caterpillar and John Deere — can create a custom cable from a drawing or a physical sample.

Apex also operates a brake-hose manufacturing machine, allowing hoses to be made exactly to order, on the spot. This machine can also manufacture braided brake and oil hoses.

Because of the diverse nature of the business, the company stocks a wide range of brake, clutch, and cable components, including hydraulic cylinders, shoes, drums, rotors, pads, and repair kits, catering for vehicle from 1920s to current models

Greg says there would not be a more complete brake shop anywhere in New Zealand. It specializes in the ‘hard to get’ parts. Parts manager Bevan Sutton has become adept a locating hard-toget parts, as customers know this is the place to go with unusual requests.

Apex will source components from overseas when necessary but will also repair or manufacture brake and clutch parts in house. It specializes in the repair of all brake components including resleeving cylinders, boosters, calipers, proportioning valves, and brake linings.

All resleeving is carried out using seamless stainless steel. Brake caliper seals and pistons do require replacement overtime; if new pistons are unavailable, these can also be resleeved in stainless steel.

Apex also rebuilds brake boosters and proportioning valves, providing all parts are available, and can arrange brake component relining.

While it specializes in brake and clutch servicing and repairs, the team has transferable skills and and its AA-approved workshop can undertake all types of vehicle repairs.

Counterfeiting of auto parts increasing PHONY COMPONENTS HURT THE TRADE AND, POTENTIALLY, CUSTOMERS side from the negative economic consequences of being hoodwinked, fake parts can be a serious safety risk, says James E Guyette, reporting in searchautoparts.com: “There’s some scary stuff out there,” says distributor Michael Antonelli of Vantage Marketing Global Inc., based on Grand Island, NY. “It may look the same on the outside, but you have no idea what’s on the inside; it may even work — at least for a while.”

Just about any part of a vehicle can be copied, faked and sold to an unsuspecting buyer. “There are different levels of sophistication and scruples,” according to Antonelli. “It’s whatever the flavour of the day is” in terms of whatever product is popular enough to be falsely duplicated and then covertly disseminated at a profit.

Minimal risk of detection “If they see a demand they’ll start making it,” Antonelli notes. “We’ve seen people copy a lot of products, but they don’t have the same parameters” as those produced at a legitimate factory OEM quality factory.

Antonelli urges aftermarket business owners to resist dodgy parts despite the lure of cheaper pricing.

For a given dicey part, “If I can save 20 per cent, I’m only saving 10 bucks; do I want to risk that?”

Knowing your seller is a good technique for avoiding counterfeit parts, especially when making offshore purchases. “If it’s got a (mainstream) manufacturer’s name on it but you’re getting it from some weird source — beware,” says Antonelli. “Be cautious around ‘white box’ as well.”

US$45 billion cost to global business A study by Frost & Sullivan estimates that automotive suppliers lost US$45 billion to counterfeiting worldwide in 2011, and the economic value of pirated products is expected to double by 2022.

“Trafficking counterfeit merchandise/products, which often have unknown ingredients or are constructed with substandard materials, pose a significant public safety and national security risk,” says Jerry C Templet Jr, deputy special agent in charge at the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) office in San Francisco and Northern California.

“Additionally, the entry of illicit products into the commerce of the US negatively impacts legitimate US businesses,” he says.

Serious and growing problem The list of auto parts seized by customs officials includes airbags, brake pads, wheels, seat belts, oil and air filters, control arms, windshields, bearings, steering linkages, ignition coils, microchips, spark plugs, solenoids, clutch housings, crankshafts, diagnostic equipment, suspension parts and oil pumps, reports Chris Caris, administrator of the Automotive Anti-Counterfeiting Council.

The proliferation of counterfeit auto parts is increasing, according to the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (NIPRCC), which is led by HSI, an enforcement arm of ICE, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Law enforcement has identified a trend of counterfeited parts that is growing at an alarming rate,” says NIPRCC’s Bruce Foucart. “At best these parts will not perform as well as authentic parts. At worst, they can fail catastrophically with potentially fatal consequences.”

Do business only with reputable repair shops or the manufacturer’s repair network.

Stay informed about the sources of parts you are purchasing or installing — do basic research.

Beware of ‘too good to be true’ prices that are well below those of competitors.

Use caution when purchasing auto parts on the internet that are shipped from other countries or are sold at very low prices.
