A

national network of auto electricians has come together to form Battery Zone, which will trade on their expertise with Yuasa Batteries. Their goal is to provide the best local battery replacement service and advice throughout New Zealand.

Battery Zone’s Bruce Johnson said for many years the group met once a year, primarily to pool their expertise, learn about advances in battery technology and do a bit of networking.

Bruce, who owns Johnson Electrical in Waipukurau, said the group decided to formalise the alliance and create something big enough to challenge the battery retail landscape.

“Businesses need to stay nimble, so this helps address a need among auto electricians to futureproof our businesses and provide options for when we want to ‘get off the tools’,” he said.

We don’t really do ‘themes’ in this news-based publication but sometimes one emerges anyway, and this month it is ‘design’.

A number of the organisations we talked to this month focused on helping workshops set themselves up to get the best bang for their bucks in new equipment, and also how to lay out their workshops.

Our 360 degree garage this month features a fitout for the new Porirua Mag &Turbo service centre. Owner Jamie had experience in another branch to draw on which helped when specifying equipment and getting a good deal by working with just one supplier.

Treadway Equipped got a couple of new agencies to fill out their range, which helped them move further into this space. They have designed workshops and tyre bays before but the new agencies mean they can offer a one-stop-shop solution, so that clients no longer have to set up relationships with other suppliers for a couple of bits of gear.

Emco, which supplies oil and lubricant handling equipment also makes the point this month that the effort they put into designing a handsome installation creates a feelgood factor that their clients often don’t expect, and creates an impression that could even contribute to those businesses’ bottom lines.

We also talk this month to AECS founder Herbert Leijen. His business does a lot of training, which gives him an incentive to keep a close eye on the future. He says the future is bright and if he manages to share just a part of his passion with trainees, they will surely be headed for success.

ayman Reese towbars were launched on New Zealand market mid-last year and quickly scored a network of installers around the country.

Sales manager for distributors Cequent, Darryl Maslin, says Australian-based Hayman Reese focuses on designing innovative equipment with

features that appeal to the market, such as the X-Bar for offroaders, which has three towing eyes and protected connections, and the Hitch Step which has built-in LED lighting. That strategy has already seen their gear attracting buyers here too.

To cater to demand, it was always part of the strategy to build a business to business portal to

help installers specify and order the right parts efficiently and accurately every time.

“All account holders get their own login and the portal will show them all relevant details about towbars, fit times, if it needs a bumper cut; tongue style, their buy price and stock availability in real time,” Darryl says.

“Installers and retailers of towing equipment are allergic to holding stock, like any other business, so we are set up to deliver these heavy freight items anywhere fast, North Island or South Island,” says Darryl. “Also to improve our service to our South Island customers we have a third party logistics warehouse in Christchurch, stocking our fast moving towbars and accessories.”

The portal will continue to be developed. Photos will be added to help ensure correct selection and tips and tricks notes will be added for any of the trickier installations.

The portal also gives installers access to other product lines: US-based Reese towing components, Advantage accessories, and Rola roof racks.

The next step in the strategy is to launch a retail version that simplifies the process of selecting, ordering and paying for towbars, and booking installation locally.

Toyo hits the road seeking more Kiwi market share YHI (NEW ZEALAND) LTD AIMS TO PUT MORE KIWIS ON TOYO RUBBER

S

ince taking over distribution of Toyo tyres in New Zealand in January, YHI has taken Toyo tyres on a countrywide roadshow, highlighting the breadth of the available range, its key strengths and a new sales strategy aimed at lifting Toyo’s market share.

YHI developed and hosted the roadshow which relaunched the brand here, anchored by a series of eight evening presentations to retailers from Auckland to Invercargill. YHI brought in three of Toyo Australia’’s top executives to present research on the brand’s positioning and highlight key aspects of the strategy they worked out with YHI, for the New Zealand market.

YHI Divisional Manager Bevan Messenger says YHI’s New Zealand’s marketing plan for Toyo tyres brand spans the market, offering products in all categories. The Proxes C100 Plus for passenger cars features a wear resistant silica tread compound and ‘silent wall’ technology. Small ridges on the sides of the four main circumferential rain channels reduce the ‘pipe’ acoustics of air moving through these channels. These quiet, long-lasting and high performing tyres are available in no less than 60+ sizes, covering most modern vehicles.

rothers Sam and Ben Kearns offer specialist support to help the automotive service industry keep its equipment maintained and accurate, which results in satisfied customers and a safer vehicle fleet.

Autotest Servicing NZ’s core business is servicing, repairing and calibrating wheel aligners and balancers, roller brake testers and diagnostic equipment. As they are not resellers of equipment, they are service agents for many brands, and offer installation, training, and service across the industry.

Sam and Ben followed their father into the business he set up 36 years ago. Vince Kearns, previously known as ‘the King of the Scopes’, saw new technology coming into the motor trade and took up the training as new equipment was introduced to the trade. Sam and Ben run the business now and have brought in their individual expertise in equipment installs, new technology training and follow-up service. “We are focusing a lot on training now as knowing what your gear is capable of — and being able to make the most of it — is a big part of workshops being able to upsell their professional services,�

says Sam. Sam says wheel aligner technology has changed out of sight from the days of strings and plumb bobs to multiple camera and target systems, and operator skill is as important as ever.

As ADAS system sensors look further out from the car, a small error in wheel alignment can have a big effect. Accuracy is becoming very important, says Sam. And that makes training critical, to ensure a car’s safety systems work properly and that the garage is producing good results. Having a fresh set of eyes on the equipment might also spot things like a target or wheel clamp that may not be quite right after it had been dropped. “We often get feedback from people thanking us for spotting little things that make a difference,� Sam says.

Ben says the current crack-down on garages issuing dubious warrant of fitness — a spate of businesses have been shut down across the country following random audits — highlights the need for accuracy and compliance. “We put our customers on an annual schedule so workshops and testing stations can show they are maintaining their gear to keep it accurate. That

tells the authorities a lot about how that workshop operates,� says Ben. “When you have spent a lot of money on equipment it is important to keep it serviced and calibrated so you know it is performing accurately. This will prevent comebacks and customer dissatisfaction.�

any workshops and owners of newer vehicles have noticed shorter globe life in recent years, and it has become clear there are choices to be made in this area. “Actually, the advance in electrical systems is one of the causes of shorter globe life,” says Tim. “Modern cars run more advanced electronics which require alternators to run at higher voltages, and running globes at higher voltages dramatically increases the strain on the filament, which reduces globe life.

“You could say overvoltage and voltage spikes are halogen globes’ worst enemies. The crowded engine bays in modern vehicles only makes the problem worse. Many manufacturers are opting for smaller headlight assemblies fitted with the

smaller, more compact H7 globes. These H7 globes have roughly half the life expectancy of their H4 counterparts as their more compact design is less effective at dispersing heat.”

Longer life globes were developed some time ago and are now fitted to new vehicles as standard, so Narva’s new Everlife globes will be the right globes to fit as replacements — or for vehicles with a history of short globe life, which might not have had longer life globes fitted yet. And obviously those who spend more time driving in the dark, such as professional drivers — especially taxi drivers in urban areas — will want durability and reliability, making Everlife a good choice for them.

Tim added that headlight globes can be difficult to access in modern engine bays and often the labour bill can be greater than the cost of the globe. This is becoming more of a problem for workshops as it prompts customer complaints. While it might be unfair to blame a workshop for globe life, fitting Everlife globes may avoid this particular problem.

f you have recently bought a new car then it will probably have start/stop functionality.

It is expected that within the next couple of years 90 percent of new cars will have this technology. Start/stop is designed to save fuel, or at least show the manufacturer is helping the owner avoid waste.

“With carbon targets to hit it will have some effect at least on the environment which makes us feel we are helping the cause. And all manufacturers will take those marginal gains in their vehicles’ fuel economy when trying to get an edge in the market,” says Jeff Mills, product manager at battery suppliers HCB Technologies.

Jeff has seen the extra workload imposed by modern cars’ electrical systems push battery manufacturers to develop new battery designs over the past decade.

They have ramped up batteries’ ability to take the extra work and the deeper drain, and they charge faster and accept charge more efficiently.

Jeff says the amount of fuel saved compared with an engine idling for short periods may not be great, and having your engine stop and start every few seconds might annoy some drivers, but what is not in dispute is the impact this technology has had in the battery category.

There’s more going on with respect to the battery than the need to crank out a lot more starts. Early

start/stop vehicles just needed a battery that was hardier, so manufacturers developed the Enhanced Flooded Battery or EFB which has an increased ability to deal with repeated discharge and charge cycles, an improved ability to accept charge and increased power output.

In the last eight years the addition of smart alternators means batteries have to power more electronics when the engine is off, and charging systems are not coming on until absolutely necessary. Cars now have smart alternators that only cut in and charge their batteries when they drop below a certain voltage. Not having to drive the alternator all the time makes another marginal fuel saving but again, it pushes batteries even harder.

Most OEMs have gone to Absorbed Glass Mat or AGM batteries. This technology has been around for a while for stationary engines, but applying it to the high-demand and fast charge demands of modern cars is a relatively recent development. These fully-sealed batteries do not contain liquid as in conventional batteries; instead the charged particles are set in matting.

Varta AGM batteries, made in Germany, are fitted to 80 per cent of new European cars. HCB Technologies have partnered with Varta for the last three years.

Jeff says these higher performing technologies do come at an extra cost. While people may be tempted to replace standard batteries with cheaper alternatives — something they could get away with in the past — Jeff says that is no longer an option.

“If the manufacturer specifies an AGM battery, or an EFB battery, you cannot replace it with something cheaper and expect it to hold up,” says Jeff.

“You will ultimately be up for the cost of another replacement battery and you will also have put your car’s sophisticated electronics at risk.

This is the advice Jeff gives to customers, battery resellers, and distributors in HCB’s parent company group Bapcor, which includes BNT Automotive and Truck & Trailer Parts.

“If people choose to fit a cheaper battery there will be no warranty and it will lead to failure of the system, sooner rather than later, and probably at the most inopportune time.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense to pay a lot of money for a car and then put in a battery other than what the manufacturer puts in it.”

Discovering the new tools of the trade AS THE MOTOR INDUSTRY GOES THROUGH ITS BIGGEST CHANGE IN DECADES AUTO CHANNEL SAT DOWN WITH AN INDUSTRY LEADER AND OBSERVER, AECS’ HERBERT LEIJEN, TO ASK WHERE IS IT ALL HEADING?

W

hile the rise of electric cars dominates the media, the biggest growth opportunity for the trade is in servicing the exponential growth in electronics in conventional cars, says industry trainer Herbert Leijen.

He is a director of Hawke’s Bay-based nationwide training and equipment supply organisation AECS. AECS is in the front line helping the motor trade respond to the changing demands from manufacturers, customers, the training industry and legislators.

Herbert says keeping pace with the changes in modern cars is “almost impossible” for individual mechanics and small workshops. But that change is creating great opportunities.

The pace of change has never been greater.

Electric vehicles are leading the charge, capturing the headlines, and more buyers. Vehicles sales in Europe are down in all sectors except electric vehicles of all types: fully electric, hybrid and battery-assisted.

AECS is helping the industry prepare for the change. It worked with Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO) to develop its new electric vehicle course and qualification. That gives customers assurance that mechanics have the skills to work on their vehicles, and it gives mechanics the training they need to work safely on

equipment with high voltage potential.

But this isn’t the biggest challenge. While the growth curve for EVs is rising steeply, Herbert says actual numbers in New Zealand are still low, and electric vehicles’ price and performance are still limiting factors, so it will be many years before they represent a significant part of the vehicle fleet.

“If someone wanted to bet $50 they will have more than 50 per cent of sales in five years, I would take that bet,” he says.

There is a far bigger issue for the motor trade that will dominate the foreseeable future, and Herbert’s training organisation confronts it every day. AECS’s support line runs hot with calls from the motor trade from people working on cars’ computer networks.

“It [the hotline] is there for the people we have trained but we get calls from people we have not trained, people who just need help. Electronics: that’s by far the biggest part of our calls. It’s almost all electronics.

“Cars having 60 to 80 computers is not exceptional; it is now the norm, and they each have 20 to 30 sensors or actuators, and signals from those can go across multiple computers. For a person to analyse that is very, very challenging.”

“They no longer have just a CAN bus network but also VAN, MOST and LIN networks. There can be three or four different types of networks in one

car.”

He says mechanics who have spent decades honing

their skills on mechanical systems are now having to develop the computer skills that they may have gone into mechanical engineering to avoid.

And some people with years of experience are making the decision to get out. Some are choosing retirement but others, including some people who skilled up on the new technology, have moved into different occupations. Herbert says they found the uplift in their skills was not being met with increased pay.

“The reward has to be there,” he says.

Herbert says two fundamental changes are needed. Owners of car out of warranty may need to accept that vehicle repair is no longer all about metal bashing and that the technicians working on their cars should be considered in the same light as IT specialists. The motor trade job could be even more demanding as they are dealing with so many unique OEM systems, which get more sophisticated with every model. It is inevitable that repairs will cost more because there is more to do, especially as ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) spread through the fleet.

The second change is the need for specialisation.

“The answer is specialisation,” says Herbert. “There is huge potential for specialisation.”

he Hyundai Nexo Fuel Cell vehicle has been named a ‘game changer’ at the annual Autocar awards, in recognition of its trail-blazing zero emissions hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar, said: “Hot on the heels of its Kona Electric — arguably a game

changer itself — Hyundai has launched Nexo, a new, hydrogen-powered SUV you can buy right now. Actually, it’s the latest of several generations of hydrogen fuel cell Hyundais, launched while most car makers are still years behind.”

Nexo’s fuel cell electric powertrain offers increased performance over its ix35 fuel cell predecessor. An on-board electric motor produces 163PS, drawing power from an under-bonnet fuel cell stack, which combines oxygen from the surrounding air with hydrogen from Nexo’s high-pressure storage tanks.

The result is electricity to power the motor and charge the battery, and water vapour, which harmlessly exits through the exhaust. With full tanks of hydrogen on board, Nexo is capable of travelling 660km before refuelling in just a few minutes.

Nexo also has an advanced air purification system which filters out 99.9% of very fine dust (PM2.5).

The vehicle shows the exact amount of air purified on the display panel in the car. Nexo has also been independently awarded the UL Bio Environmental Seal for the use of bio-fibres from sugar cane waste and vegetable plasticisers in the headliner and carpet areas, bio-plastics from sugar cane and corn waste in door, seat, pillar and console trims and paint extracted from rapeseed and soybean oils for the dashboard and centre console.

he car maker has launched a new limited edition model, the S19, to celebrate its centenary year. We are talking about the Seetröen, Citroën’s anti-car sickness spectacles. The new glasses feature the same principle as the original model launched last July, which has tubes around the eye-holes half-filled with coloured liquid that always show where the horizon is. They are apparently reliably effective if worn for 10-12 minutes after symptoms appear.

And, as many passengers now like to spend time on iPads or similar on long journeys, demand has been strong. As with the initial model, the Seetroën

S19 glasses were developed with start-up company Boarding Ring and design studio 5.5. The new, smarter glasses are built in a shade that matches the blue liquid, which are easier on the eye.

The Seetroën glasses launch in July 2018 attracted over 20 million web views and sales of 15,000 units in the space of a few months.

Both Seetroën models can be worn by adults and children aged ten and over, which is when the inner ear finishes growing. The glasses do not contain lenses, so anyone can wear them. Users simply put them on for 10 to 12 minutes when the initial

symptoms appear. Seetroën S19 is a limited edition.

Only 1919 units are being produced, in honour of the brand’s centenary year. Advance orders opened on 15 May for delivery in early July. The two Seetroën models are available for €99 each via Citroën’s website but only in Europe.

challenge of this project,” says McNaught. “The car is shaped with a considerable amount of curved lines, making it a tough but interesting build. From the working lights and indicators to intricate Lego Honda logos, the detail on the model has been a fun one for us to work on.”

McNaught’s team of nine used 320,000 Lego bricks and took 1300 hours to create their Type R. A steel frame supports the Lego body, which is glued together. An iPad controller turns on the headlights, fog lights, hazard lights, brake and reversing lights.

The most challenging elements of the build were the windscreen wipers due to their fragility, and the

back spoiler which needed structure to allow it to float, he said.

McNaught was ‘Brickman’, the judge on the show hosted by Australian radio and TV personality, Hamish Blaket.

It looks at factors including the road width, crash history, potential hazards, and volume of traffic. The model concluded that 87 percent of New Zealand speed limits are too high and only five percent of open roads should retain their current 100km/h speed limit.

Instead, the tool finds limits of between 60 and 80km/h should apply on open roads, while in some urban centres, Mega Maps suggests speed limits between 30 and 40km/h.

A separate report by the International Transport Forum in Paris has recommended that in order to reduce the risk of head-on collisions, rural roads without a

median barrier should have a speed limit of 70km/h.

The forum is made up of 59 member countries including New Zealand.

If implemented, this would mean almost all of New Zealand's roading network would have to have its speed limits reduced, including state highways.

The forum recommended a speed limit of 30km/h in built up areas that have vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians, and 50km/h in other areas that have intersections with a high risk of side collisions. "To reduce road trauma, governments need to take actions that will reduce the speed on roads as well as speed differences between vehicles sharing the same road," the report says.

The forum studied crash cases from ten countries to find the relationship between vehicle speed and crash risks. The report says studies showed that each one percent increase in the average vehicle speed resulted in a two percent increase in the frequency of injury crashes, a three percent increase in severe crash frequency and a four percent increase in fatal crash frequency.

"Thus, reducing speed by a few km/h can greatly reduce the risks of and severity of crashes. Lower driving speeds also benefit quality of life, especially in urban areas as the reduction of speed mitigates air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, fuel consumption and noise," the report states.

Meanwhile, in the UK, a company there is offering

a different approach based on similar data. It has developed an app that uses data provided by the police to accurately warn drivers of every accident hotspot in the UK. Based on information from 1.3 million accidents over the past 10 years, the Safescape app knows the severity of every accident and its exact time and date. the app’s AI continuously analyses various factors in real-time to calculate a risk score of the approaching location, warning drivers appropriately so that they are aware and prepared.

“You only have to look at the meteoric rise in dashcams to realise people want to feel safe in their cars. Safescape arms drivers with the best knowledge to adjust their speed accordingly, intensify their focus and hopefully stay out of harm’s way,” said Stuart Petersen, VP of Distribution & Partnerships at Safescape Intelligent Systems, the company behind the app. He makes the point there were 3500 ‘safety’ cameras on UK roads today. “But we know most of the 238,000 accidents occurring annually don’t even happen at these locations.” The Safescape uses audible alerts and a visual indicator based on familiar traffic light colours to effectively reflect the severity of the approaching risks. Safescape's VP of engineering, Alex Luketa, said its system could integrate with third party and OEM navigation, driver assist and telematics systems to add another critical layer of safety and “eyes” for their customers.

he European car market registered its seventh consecutive month of decline in March 2019. Ongoing political and economic uncertainty including Brexit and proposed diesel bans in cities meant that overall demand continued to decline. Last month, 19 of the 27 markets reported negative results, including the top 10 largest markets in Europe.

The only bright spot was that the registrations of electrified cars exceeded the 100,000 units mark, hitting 125,400. Demand was up by 31% — mostly driven by German, Norwegian, Spanish and Dutch registrations. Electric and plug-in hybrids counted for almost half of that total, but the real driver of growth was the battery electric vehicle BEV, whose registrations increased by 85%.

Felipe Munoz, JATO’s global analyst, commented, “It was always going to be a challenge to maintain the growth rate we’ve seen in recent years thanks to recent events such as WLTP (the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure used to measure fuel consumption and emissions from passenger cars). In fact, a slow-down after many years

The rapid sales growth of pure electric cars was mainly due to the outstanding results of Tesla, as its Model 3 has reached volume production. Strong demand for the Model 3 has launched Tesla into the top 25 best-selling brands in Europe. Registrations of the Model 3 jumped from 3747 units in February (revised) to 15,755 units in March, making it Europe’s top selling electric car.

It was also the top-selling premium midsize car in March.

At the same time, diesel cars continued to lose ground. Last month, they recorded the lowest monthly market share since September 2000. Total diesel registrations counted for 31.2% of total volume against 36.2% in March 2018, and 44.8% in March 2017. Despite the big drops posted last year it seems that concern among consumers is still affecting demand, and the trend has not hit rock bottom yet. The biggest drops were posted by Mercedes, Renault, Peugeot, Ford and Land Rover. In contrast, Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat saw increases in diesel registrations.

The European market continues to be dominated

by SUVs, but their growth is slowing. In March, SUV registrations totalled 650,300 units, or 36.8% of total volume. However, their sales performance is not as strong as it has been in the past, with volume growing by “only” 5%. Volume was up 11.7% for small SUVs, and 5.3% for compact SUVs. The rest of the SUV market declined. VW Group, Renault-Nissan and PSA led the SUV segment in March and in Q1.

The VW Golf remains the best-selling car, despite a 14% drop in volume in March. The best performer of the top 10 was the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, which posted strong growth in the UK, Germany and France. The Corsa is an older product but sold almost the same quantity of units as the Volkswagen Polo, whose latest generation has been in the market for about a year.

A new 2500rpm Auto Trans converter was matched to the car’s dyno output, and in went an ATI reverse pattern manual valve body along with extra clutches. Both Hamish and Kayton knew their build quality was going to be tested by Charlie, so insurance was the name of the game when completing their sides of the build. Yes, Charlie has a heavy right foot and no fear for the cost of tyres.

As the deadline loomed, it was on to one of Charlie’s benchmark prerequisites with all his projects. Hamish had the job of cleaning up the exhaust system with Flowmasters and a set of trademark exhaust cutouts.

“Yeah, Charlie loves his cars low, and he also loves them loud,” laughs Hamish. In fact, while we all know it is less

than acceptable, the cutouts are more often than not cracked open while out cruising.

Now that the car was sitting right, Kayton and Charlie put their heads together and came up with another point of interest. Charlie was always into fitting airdams to his previous cars, and this was no different. It just so happened that, discovered amongst the spares, there was a nice straight front bumper. Kayton and team cut and shut, then flipped the bumper to create a mirror image spoiler for the front. Not only does it truly work, it’s also unique.

Off he went and bought a full set of Autometer gauges before the frantic thrash (lots of 1am finishes) which involved re-crafting the main fascia, stripping a bunch of loom from under the dash, and also removing the whole air-con system. With hours left before hitting the road, Charlie charged the battery, and to his relief, smoke stayed inside the wires, while all gauges, lights, and electrical appliances worked as they should.

It was down to hours now, and with no trailers in sight, the boys hit Auckland’s motorway heading for Whangamata.

First stop was Kopu Tavern to celebrate an uneventful trip across the Hauraki Plains — not that Charlie was drinking any adult beverages — and his smile told the whole story.

f you’ve missed the first three instalments of the 1000-plus horsepower pump gas SR20DET engine build for Cook Motor Racing (CMR), we suggest that you pick up Auto Channel issues 12, 13, and 14 and read those first.

For those of you following along, let’s cut to the chase and get right back into it. For those of you following along, last time we left the workshop the team were preparing to run the first mule engine on the dyno. Well, we all know that in car building rarely does everything go completely to plan, and the past few weeks have been a trying time for the CMR team, with a string of setbacks.

The first hurdle saw a ton of components that were being shipped from a US shipping company all being placed on a boat when half were supposed to be airfreighted. To rub salt in the wound, the boat has been delayed and will not even land in New Zealand until after the streamliner ships. This meant replacements had to be ordered, some with lead time given they are not off-the-shelf products, and they all will be airfreighted.

What this means for the timeline is that the mule engines will now be tuned as if they were the billet engines, complete with the compound turbo setups, and, as Reg says, if they blow they blow; the team simply do not have the luxury of time to wait for the parts. So, if you ever wondered how much boost a stock block will take, we are about to find out — but hopefully not before the team have all the answers they need from the dyno.

The second string of hurdles has been, first, the Mazworx 60-2 crank trigger not talking to the software; then, once this was band-aid fixed by grinding off a few teeth to make it a 20-tooth trigger, the dyno computer itself failed. A new computer was purchased, but getting the correct Windows software became a nightmare.

“We lost two weeks of work trying to get the right Windows 7 software,” explains Reg. Thankfully, by the time you read this, the mule engine will have been putting in real work. The one piece of encouraging dyno info they have pulled thus far is from the single power run. With the G25 Garrett turbo, cheap manifold, and 30 psi, it made 422. They stopped there for now, and the real manifold and boost control system can be fitted, but the graphs showed it should hit 600hp no issue.

The Inconel exhaust manifold we touched on last issue is now finished, although that, too, was not without a challenge. Fabricator Ryan from IMR found that the Inconel tubing was so hard that simply hammering it into the oval shape to suit the oval port just would not work. As a result, a second set of 304 stainless flanges has been machined by Mason Tool & Engineering, with the transition from oval to round in the flange. Sitting on this manifold will be the Garrett G42, which weighs a hefty 22kg.

This is Garrett’s latest and greatest unit, having only been released late last year. The smaller second turbo to be used for the compound set-up is the G28 currently doing the job on the dyno.

Boost control will be a Co2 set-up. This type of boost control allows absolute control over the pressure, especially when dealing with the high boost figures here. Unlike a typical boost control system, a soft wastegate spring is used and Co2 is pumped into the spring chamber to hold the valve shut. Co2 pressure is bled off with a second boost control valve, to allow the boost pressure to be bled to your target psi. This means they can run almost any pressure they desire, and it can be changed almost instantly via the ECU rather than being confined to a range that works with the spring fitted. The team are using two gates in the system — one per turbo — with a Turbosmart Progate 60 for the primary turbo and 40mm Progate for the second. Both gates also feature wastegate sensor tops so that the exact valve location can be relayed to the MoTeC.

We also talked about the cylinder pressure system last month, and the difficulties in fitting the sensors to the head. To solve this, a sacrificial head was cut through the middle of the combustion chamber to work out where it will fit. Four threaded holes will be machined into the side of the head as well as small No. 64 holes in each combustion chamber to feed the sensor. It’s going to be a tight fit but it will work.

With just over a month (at the time of writing) until the streamliner is shipped, the long process of dyno tuning will soon kick off. The tuning team of Dwight Scott and Jack Richardson will spend what is expected to be at least a week solid on the dyno, working closely with MoTeC in Australia to get the software written for the M150 and everything working in harmony.

If you haven’t worked it out yet, this is not an

easy task with such a complex system to tune. To minimize the risk to the mule engine, it will first be run on E85 as it’s much more knock resistant and more stable temperature wise. An engine blowing up would cost time, something they are very short on. Once they are happy, it will be switched over to petrol. Interestingly, they will also run methanol, and that will likely be the fuel the first billet engine will run on at Bonneville in an attempt to set the fuel version of the gas record they hope to set this year with the streamliner.

Reg explains, “I think we will run that first over in Bonneville, and go for the fuel because it’s safer. If we chase the fuel record first, then hopefully we will be able to make maybe 8 to 10 runs and keep the engine together, even if it’s not tuned 100 per cent right. But if we run gas straightaway, and it’s not tuned right, it will wreck an engine instantly. I would

be surprised if we ran petrol at Speedweek.”

n the history of the world, 1969 was a big year. On 20 July we heard the famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”, indicating a momentous achievement in the space

race. However, back when Nasa was still in the planning stages of the Apollo 11 mission, Detroit’s big three, Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, were equally frantic, planning things of their own. Let’s not forget that this was all before the computer age, and manufacturers were always working a few years ahead of the market. Each manufacturer would also have been keeping a close eye on the opposition, to try and predict what it would come up with next — and perhaps it was due to this that there are similarities among the vehicles they created.
