MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear friends of Parks College,

The dedicated work of our students, faculty and staff, and the assistance in various forms we receive from alumni and friends, has resulted in yet another outstanding year for Parks College.

The year started and ended with academic accreditation for our programs. In August 2013 the aerospace, biomedical, electrical and mechanical engineering programs were fully reaccredited

by ABET. Additionally, with its first graduating class in 2011, the computer engineering program received its initial accreditation. Not only did these programs receive accreditation, but all engineering programs were accredited for the maximum allowable period of six years. The engineering physics program received its initial accreditation for a period of two years. The civil engineering program had its inaugural graduating class in 2013 and applied for its initial accreditation this academic year. We are very pleased to report it has also been fully accredited for six years, until fall 2019, and effective retroactively from fall 2012. These accreditation processes are rigorous reviews of the programs and require concerted and significant effort by everyone involved.

We were also rewarded with considerable success in our chair and faculty searches. In August 2013 Amanda Cox, Ph.D. and William Lindquist, Ph.D. were appointed Assistant Professors of Civil Engineering. Though the appointments of the following faculty are effective for the start of the 2014-15 academic year, the searches to appoint them occurred in the 2013-14 academic year and the effort paid very handsomely. Professor Sridhar Condoor, Ph.D., was appointed Chair of the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department; Professor Michelle Sabick, Ph.D., was appointed Chair of our Biomedical Engineering Department; Professor Ronaldo Luna, Ph.D., was appointed Chair of our Civil Engineering Department; Srikanth Gururajan, Ph.D. was appointed Assistant Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering; Natasha Case, Ph.D., Andrew Hall, Ph.D. and Yan Gai, Ph.D. were appointed Assistant Professors of Biomedical Engineering; and Jalil Kianfar, Ph.D. was appointed Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering. The new department chairs and professors appointed represent the largest number of academics hired in one year in the history of the College, and will be instrumental in the pursuit of the strategic goals of the College and University. The new faculty hires will increase funded research and research outputs, as well as help us develop new academic programs in the immediate future. I am very grateful to the search committees for their diligent and efficient work to run all these successful faculty searches concurrently.

Having awarded the first doctoral degree in Aviation in the world in May 2013, Parks College awarded another first at our 2014 Pre-commencement Ceremony: the first doctoral degree in Engineering awarded at Parks College to Junsik Lee. This is the culmination of many years of effort to start and nurture our graduate programs. Under Riyadh Hindi’s capable leadership the graduate program grew: from 58 graduate students in 2012 to 68 in 2013. We are expecting about 100 graduate students to be enrolled in 2014. The undergraduate student population is also experiencing a healthy growth, which we expect will continue. Overall, enrollment in the College has increased 23% in the last four years. Research output and cash received in donations continue to increase at a healthy pace.

The above are only the means we use to pursue our main goal: our Jesuit mission compels us to excel in research-led education, to prepare our students to be the leaders of tomorrow and service to humanity. As you will see in the following pages our students continue to excel in academic and extracurricular achievements. Parks College is a unique family of engineers and aviators sharing a common vision for excellence in everything they tackle. With an eye for innovation and entrepreneurship, we share a vision to apply our work to the benefit of the global society. Every day I am humbled by yet another achievement of a member of the Parks community. I am deeply honored to be a member of our effort to take Parks College to new levels of recognition and performance.

NEWS AND NOTES FEATURED EQUIPMENT

TINKER LAB The Tinker Lab is a learning, hands-on environment that welcomes all

Parks College students and faculty. Equipped with computers, laser etchers, and 3D printers, the Tinker Lab provides students with a multifceted environment to help encourage and develop an innovative mindset within each individual. Led by graduate students and the iScholars (innovation scholars), the Tinker Lab was created through the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network (KEEN) grant Sridhar Condoor, Ph.D. received. KEEN is a collaboration of 19 universities around the U.S. that strive to instill an entrepreneurial mindset in undergraduate engineering students. KEEN’s mission is to “graduate engineers who will contribute to business success, and in doing so, transform the American workforce.”

Objet 3D Printer : From figurines to full working gear systems, students are able to bring creations to life with this machine. It is able to take a 3D computer model and print it in plastic.

At fast speed and high accuracy, this machine is able to print down to 0.1 mm. This new technology is the industry standard for industrial designers, architects, and engineers.

Stratasys 3D Printer : In a matter of hours, the machine is able to produce 3D models that meet structural requirements. This machine is used in all areas of engineering for making prototypes and fully functional products.

Epilog Laser Etcher - This small machine is able to produce high accuracy etchings and cuts and is easy to learn and use with most materials.

Many of our students use the laser etcher to cut the skeleton for airplane wings as well as etching part numbers for the bill of materials.

NextEngine 3D Scanner : Students are able to take any object and make a digital model that is accurate and fast with this 3D scanner. The machine uses lasers and pictures to map out data.

PARKS COLLEGE FSAE RACING TEAM The Parks Racing FSAE team attended the yearly competition in Lincoln, Nebraska hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Everyone’s hard work paid off as the team of 2013-2014 was the first Parks Racing team to pass technical inspection in 7 years. Unfortunately, clutch failure prevented participation in dynamic events.

This year’s team should still be very proud. There were a handful of teams at the event that failed to pass inspection even after attempting to modify components on their chassis. The team placed well in the Cost Report aspect of the competition and received many compliments from the FSAE judges on the overall appearance of the car.

The team is looking forward to recruiting more passionate members and passing on the knowledge as well as the experience that participating in Parks Racing has offered them.

GRAND CHALLENGE SCHOLARS PROGRAM RECIPIENTS Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology is recognized as part of an elite national program that prepares the next generation of engineers.

This program is called The Grand Challenge Scholars Program. Parks College is one of 17 colleges across the country to have the privilege to select and award students as graduates of this program. Grand Challenge Scholars are tasked with completing five components – research experience, interdisciplinary curriculum, entrepreneurship, global dimension and service learning - by combining their curricular and extracurricular experiences to solve the grand challenges facing society in this century.

Endorsed and supported by the National Academy of Engineering, the Grand Challenge Scholars Program is a call to action to make use of the opportunities and tackle the societal challenges that have the potential to affect our quality of life.

This year, Parks College is proud to present two graduates as Grand Challenge Scholars.

FIRST PH.D. GRANTED IN ENGINEERING AT PARKS COLLEGE This year Parks College celebrated one more “first” in its history: the first doctoral degree in Engineering awarded.

Junsik Lee, Ph.D. was the first ever to receive a Ph.D. in Engineering from Parks College. Through the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department, Lee finished his degree after completing and defending his dissertation titled “Jet Array Impingement Heat Transfer: Effect of Jet-to-Target Plate Distance, Reynolds Number, Hole Spacing, and Surface Roughness.”

“This is a significant milestone for Parks College. Awarding the first doctoral degree in engineering in the history of the College is one of the tangible outcomes of our long-term commitment to grow our graduate programs and research productivity, which then fertilize research-led excellence in our teaching programs” said Parks College Dean, Theodosios Alexander, Sc.D. “Several additional engineering Ph.D. students are in the pipeline and will soon follow in Junsik Lee’s footsteps.”

KEEGAN FAUDREE RECIPIENT OF OLIVER L. PARKS AWARD

Christopher “Keegan” Faudree was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Oliver L. Parks award. This award honors students who excel in three categories: Academic Excellence, Leadership and Service. Faudree, who hails from Midland, Texas, graduated in May with two degrees, one in Mechanical Engineering and one in Business Administration, which he accomplished while maintaining a 3.9 GPA during his tenure at SLU. He was chosen for this award by a committee of Parks faculty and staff members out of a pool of 12 nominees, not only for his outstanding academic record, but also for his record of service to SLU and the greater community as well as his countless leadership roles both at Parks and the John Cook School of Business. Keegan noted that he aspires “to be an engineer who can connect the logical dots between business and engineering, as Oliver Parks was able to do with business and aviation.”

On July 16, Bernard Harris, Jr., M.D., the first African American to walk in space, met nearly 100 campers participating in the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at both Saint Louis University and Texas Tech. Harris spoke about his educational background and his career with NASA to a classroom full of campers at SLU, as well as interacting with participants in Texas Tech via Skype.

Harris received his medical degree from Texas Tech in 1982. “You were all born for a reason,” he told the group of middle-school students. “It’s your job to figure out what that reason is. Once you do, and if you work hard, I know you’ll be successful.”

3. COPPER (SLU-01), Saint Louis University’s first spacecraft designed, built, tested and operated by students at Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, launched Tuesday, Nov. 19, from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at Wallops Island, Virginia. The Air Force Research Laboratory and NASA Missouri Space Grant funded the project development and NASA sponsored the launch.

COPPER’s mission is to test the effectiveness of a commercial infrared camera for in-space navigation and object detection, as well as observing the Earth in the infrared spectrum. COPPER is a one kilogram, 10-centimeter cube design and consists of commercially-available spacecraft parts and student-developed electronics. One of the most significant student-led efforts was the development of a camera-interface board using a custom field programmable gate array. Parks College students will continue to operate COPPER for 12 months from a radio control station in McDonnell-Douglas Hall at Saint Louis University. The spacecraft will naturally de-orbit in less than four years.

The UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers (I.Mech.E.) awarded the 2014 Kenneth Harris James Prize to the team of George Doulgeris, Theodosios Korakianitis (aka Theodosios Alexander), Eldad Avital, Pericles Pilidis and Panos Laskarides for their paper titled: “Effect of jet noise reduction on gas turbine engine efficiency”. According to the I.Mech.E. the Kenneth Harris James Prize is awarded for the best paper on an aerospace subject published by the Institution in the previous year or for a contribution or achievement in that field.

5. Saint Louis University’s Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology hosted the Second Annual Conference of Engineering Deans of Catholic Universities (EDCU), which was held on campus April 27-29, 2014. This was a new conference in which the deans of engineering colleges of US Catholic universities meet to discuss opportunities and common challenges. The first EDCU conference was held in April 2013 at Seattle University.

Riyadh Hindi, Ph.D., P.E., Director of Graduate Programs, and his team of researchers including civil engineering faculty members Will Lindquist, Ph.D., P.E., and Ahmed Ibrahim, Ph.D., was awarded $300,000 from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) at the University of Illinois. The funding supports their research on the “Effectiveness of Exterior Beam Rotation Prevention Systems for Bridge Deck Construction.” The two-year project begain in January 2014, and provides financial support for two graduate students and some undergraduate students.

7. Silviya Zustiak’s research focuses on tissue engineering. She has identified one of the major concerns of tissue engineering to be difficulty in building three-dimensional in vitro models for studying tissue physiology and pathology. Zustiak is attempting to engineer a complete toolbox for building 3D in vitro models. These models can have an immediate impact on the development of platforms for toxicology screening. By providing in vivo-like cell microenvironment, her models have the potential to address growing concerns about drug failures in clinical trials due to lack of efficacy or unexpected side effects.

2013 ALUMNI MERIT AWARD WINNERS Dr. Ken Atkins received his B.S. in aeronautical engineering from Saint Louis University’s Parks College in 1958. After Parks, Atkins served nine years as an officer and pilot in the U.S. Air Force. During this service, he earned his M.S. in aerospace engineering (USAF Institute of Technology). Post USAF, he completed his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering at the University of Illinois.

Atkins next joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for a successful 34 year career involving key leadership roles in advancing NASA’s exploration of the solar system. These ranged from mission design to management of power, commanding and data handling on robotic spacecraft. The capstone was being named Project Manager of the Stardust sample return mission to comet Wild 2. Stardust became NASA’s first successful sample return since Apollo by flying through the dust cloud near the nucleus, collecting particles and returning them to Earth (January 2006). Honored for this achievement, Stardust’s Sample Return Capsule (SRC) now resides in the National Air and Space Museum’s Milestones of Flight Gallery.

After formal retirement in 2002, Atkins returned to JPL in a part-time role providing mentoring activities and developing a workshop for training JPL project managers. He retired fully in May 2008.

John Cantwell received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Saint Louis University’s Institute of Technology in 1957 and his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in 1962 under the direction of Ky Fan. He learned to teach as a teaching assistant at Notre Dame under the tutelage of Arnold Ross. He also spent a year at Wayne State University and a year at Northwestern University. After his doctorate, he spent two years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton as assistant to Marston Morse and then taught at the University of Iowa. He returned to Saint Louis University in 1967 and retired in 2012.

Cantwell served in a variety of roles at SLU as Professor of Mathematics. He was the first director of SLU’s program in computer science and then chair of the mathematics department. He particularly enjoyed interacting with students in and out of the classroom. His former students include many math teachers.

Cantwell has published numerous research articles on geometric topology, many in collaboration with Larry Conlon, and is well known in the field. His interest in the use of technology in teaching led to the development of software for teaching mathematics.
