Dear Park Lane Community, Welcome to this special edition of the PLP that not only celebrates the achievements of this academic year but also ten years since the opening of Park Lane International School.

It is Park Lane’s positive and warm atmosphere that has made it such an incredible learning environment over that past decade.

We are delighted that this was recognised in our recent inspection. It is always wonderful to hear how impressed our visitors were with the children’s love of learning, happiness in school and the quality of their learning experiences.

As we look forward to the summer break, it is important to reflect on the progress and achievements of each and every child, whether they be academic, sporting or social, they should all be celebrated and encouraged.

I would like to wish all the staff and children that are leaving us at the end of the year, the best of luck for their next adventures. You will be greatly missed by the entire Park Lane community.

I hope you all have a relaxing and well deserved summer break. We look forward to seeing you in September.

Highlights disco, parents got their groove on too as they were beckoned onto the dance floor by their children. Proceeds from these events will go to support SVVP, a wonderful dog training centre in Prague that provides dogs for the disabled.

Czech day On Friday, 11th of May Park Lane Norbertov campus had a Czech day called ‘Check you Czech’. It was the best day full of interesting activities, which was led by the Year 5 children. All children took part in house teams and the activities were based on traditional Czech fairytales and stories. Activities included guessing the sounds from popular Czech movies and cartoons and a memory game from the story Hrnečku vař.

Y5 trip to Choco-Story Museum

really enjoyed looking for different creatures, and we all agreed that we didn’t want to see any snakes. We also discussed that bees can sting us, but that they are helpful creatures. This was an awesome opportunity to explain and discuss how we should handle different minibeasts.

On Monday 23rd of April Year 5 visited the Choco-Story Museum to finish their topic ‘Cocoa Crazy’.

Divoká Šárka Reception have been learning about minibeasts, we went to Divoká Šárka to hunt and observe them.

After lunch we all got into the bus, and drove to Divoka Sarka. Once in the park, we walked about a kilometre and found a beautiful open field with dandelions.

Along the way we had a lot of opportunities to see different creatures and plants in their natural habitats.

Miss Pavla gave every student a magnifying glass and a check list of different minibeasts, and we started hunting. ​Children​

Doggy Disco Our School Council proudly hosted two successful Discos (on May 9th & May 23rd) which were well attended and enjoyed by all. The children and staff also brought in pictures of beloved pups and pets to be pinned to a display in our hall.

DJ Pavel played upbeat pop hits and our hall was lit with disco lights and decorated by bobbing bubbles. At the Key Stage 2

Fire Fighting Heroes On Friday 4th May, Year 6 had an exciting visit from a group of local firefighters. We had lots of fun looking at how gas masks have changed since World War 2 and even got to have a look inside their fire engine.

and we were able to taste it before we decorated our own chocolate bars. There were chocolates from four different countries and, to keep us from eating all the chocolates, we were asked to write four facts each about chocolate and its history.

For each fact we found we were able to taste one chocolate. Before going home, we were able to take our own chocolates back to school. We had a great time!

On Saturday 26th May we celebrated International Day at Norbertov. It was great to see all the children, parents and staff coming together to celebrate all the different cultures and traditions we embrace.

The food was delicious and the activities were fun. Olivia from 4M said “We had to pick a country and make traditional food from that country. For example, Finland made lemonade and China made dumplings.’

The choir gave a wonderful performance singing “A Million Dreams” and “All Star”.

Mika from 5A told us “It was amazing.

I loved all of the songs.”

A huge thank you for all the time and dedication that went into setting up the stalls. They were fantastic.

Budding Authors in Year Six On Sunday 20th May, three of our Year Sixes made it into the final of a countrywide writing competition. The competition, “Let’s Write”, hosted by ClassActs, asked entrants to create a story celebrating 100 years of Czech and Slovak history. Our writers chose to create thoughtful, fantastical time travel narratives full of wonderful vocabulary. We entered their stories to the competition in April and waited nervously for over a month to hear the results.

We celebrate mother’s day because we want to celebrate the importance of our mothers. Mothers are important because they care about us, we wouldn’t survive without them. We made some wonderful mother’s day cards. Then in our school hall our mothers collected the wonderful cards, had delicious muffins and had a good time.

Stem Day This term, Norbertov campus held a STEM day. This was a chance for each class to celebrate and share a science, technology, engineering or maths project. Each class took pride in their project and created many original pieces. From magnetic mazes, floating gardens and magical trees.

John from 3N explained that “STEM activities are important because they help us to learn. I learnt that putting more effort into your work can help.”

The children really enjoyed sharing their projects with each other and had a wonderful afternoon discussing how they designed and built their STEM activities.

Jan from 3J told us “I enjoyed making the trees and looking at the different stations with the different creations.”

Elisha, Hannah and Barbara should be very proud of themselves for making it to the final, as their age category had by far the highest number of entries from all over the Czech Republic. As well as making it into the top ten, Elisha and Hannah also gained honourable mentions in their age category. Congratulations to all three girls. We look forward to reading your novels in the near future!

Picnic in the Sunshine Nursery L and Nursery D celebrated the start of summer with a picnic in the sunshine. They had a wonderful time playing and enjoying some delicious food.

Y5’s Chocolate Extravaganza On Friday 20th April Year 5 hosted a bake sale, to raise money for charities. 5K was raising money for WWF – a charity that helps animals from suffering major illnesses and risks of being killed. From WWF, you can donate and adopt a ton of animals from across the world, and 5K had enough money to adopt two! By having the whole school vote, 5K has chosen to adopt a panda and a snow leopard. For

5A has offered to help Fairtrade help farmers from South Africa and America, by handing them more money than they usually get, they provide them with clean water and electricity. This will help them by 100% more. Both year 5 classes raised exactly 8913 czk and the teachers Miss Angharad and Miss Katie will donate the extra money so we can have 9000 czk altogether. Now, both classes have 4500 czk, and as I wrote earlier, 5K will be able to adopt two animals, because one costs 1200 czk.

We would like to say thank you to everyone who bought our baked goods and biggest thank you to the people who donated even more money to the charities.

Fond Farewells

“Miss Melynka made lots of fun things for us for example The Beauty and the Beast show! We are going to miss her!” David M Y6 “She teaches in fun ways and she sings very nicely. It is sad she is leaving and I hope that she really enjoys her new school in Portugal.” Kaja Y6 sends her best wishes.

Andulka from 5K said her favourite memory of Miss Katie was “Finally seeing Miss Katie achieve her lifelong dream of boom flossing!”.

Miss Sabina Miss Sabina’s caring and positive attitude will be greatly missed next year when she starts her brand new teaching adventure in Denmark.

Whilst Tereza really appreciates that “Miss Katie always sticks to what we like to do and sees the best in us.”

5K will greatly miss the fun environment Miss Katie creates in her classroom. Rene said “I liked watching Miss Katie ski (and fall) on the ski trip!,”

Miss Melynka Miss Melynka’s next adventure will be teaching at an International School in sunny Portugal.

Miss Ella is exploring the world on her next adventure. She plans to travel to South East Asia and Australia. She is also really looking forward to attending her sister’s wedding.

We wish Miss Sophie the best of luck, as she leaves Park Lane to teach in Amsterdam. She is well loved even by the children she hasn’t taught!

Miss Debbie and the rest of the staff at Sibeliova will miss you greatly.

“She used to teach my sister. She’s very kind and she’s really funny. My sister said she’s a really good teacher and she really enjoys the lessons with her. I wish she’d taught me.” Vojta from Year 4 told us.

A huge thank you to these amazing members of staff who are sadly leaving us this year. You will all be missed very much by the children and the staff. Here’s just a few memories and thoughts we’d like to share with you.

Miss Emma’s class will certainly miss next year. They have had a wonderful year in Reception.

We wish Miss Hazel all the very best as she continues her teaching career in Mexico. She will be missed very much.

Jachym said of Miss Emma “‘I like what you do for me. That is called appreciation’”. Whilst Sona stated “She’s so nice and she’s so kind”.

Miss Emma is certainly adored by her class. Molly said “I like the way she knows how to teach us”.

Miss Katie Miss Katie has decided to go travelling around the world before returning to her home town of Manchester. We will all certainly miss her laughter and endless enthusiasm for teaching.

Miss Melynka is a dedicated teacher who brought the joy of spectacular summer shows to Year 6. Matilda was phenomenal.

Choir really appreciate the time and dedication Miss Melynka puts into helping put on fabulous performances.

“Miss Melynka, we really enjoyed learning songs with you” Mariya from 4M told us.

“Thank you for keeping us calm before our choir performances and for helping us practise.” Nela 4M.

“Miss Sophie, I wish you the best luck ever and I think that you were one of the best teachers that I have ever had. I am sad that you are leaving but I am sure that your new class will like you as a teacher.”

Miss Kate Miss Kate is leaving us to explore her art career. You can find her in old town square creating amazing spray painted images.

The children in art club will certainly miss her.

Check Your Czech!

po škole rozmístěny nejrůznější kvízy, hádanky, rébusy, tajné ochutnávky, ale také pohybové hry, které pro letošek spojovalo téma české pohádky. Každé stanoviště měla na povel dvojice dětí z Y5, která dávala pozor na plnění úkolů, jejich ohodnocení i zpětnou vazbu.

Spolupráce, týmový duch, sdílení nápadů Úkoly jsou vymyšleny tak, aby se v každém týmu zapojily všechny děti.

Protože běží o čas, jde o spolupráci, rychlou domluvu a organizaci. Posílit v dětech kamarádství, schopnost efektivní komunikace a partnerství, to je náš cíl.

Děti se snažily zapojovat do hry i ostatní učitele, ti jen bezradně krčili rameny nad Zlatovláskou či Velikou řepou. Je s podivem, kolik klasických českých pohádek je už pro naše děti vcelku složitým rébusem odkudsi z minulosti.

V pátek 11. května ožívají prostory Norbertova nebývale čilým ruchem. Je možno spatřit skupinky dětí, jak pádí tu na hřiště, tu z hřiště do třídy, ze třídy do jídelny a odtud zase někam pryč. Kapitáni pevně třímají desky a ostatní sledují, kolik už mají bodů. Všude mnoho povyku, povzbuzování, smíchu, soutěžení. O co tady šlo? Čeští učitelé ve spolupráci se studenty z Y5 uspořádali třetí, dalo by se říci, že již tradiční české odpoledne. Jako každý rok se všechny děti od Y2 do Y4 se rozdělily do týmů podle svých domovských barev, aby se mohly zapojit do celoškolního zápolení, ověřování znalostí a legrace, a to všechno v češtině. V tento den byly

Kolem třetí hodiny to už ve školní hale hučí jako v úle. Týmy se tu scházejí na závěrečné vyhlášení. Paní učitelka Maruška ještě oznamuje speciální cenu pro děti, které přišly oblečeny v národních barvách. Dostávají malou pozornost za svou snahu i za to, že četly plakáty

s instrukcemi, které visely po celé škole.

A je to! Vítězové už mlsají zaslouženou odměnu a všichni se rozchází do svých tříd. Podle bezprostředních reakcí i po kritickém zhodnocení Y5 jsme usoudili, že se i letošní české odpoledne povedlo a češtinu se nám podařilo představit v dobrém světle - nejen jako komunikační jazyk, ale také jazyk, ke kterému se váže bohatá historie a kultura.

Top Ten Things about Park Lane

Country?: My favourite country I have visited is Croatia.

Or do you sometimes want to stay at home and watch TV?

5. Student Council

I really enjoy/need my weekends and holidays but I don’t watch that much television.

Being a student councillor is great fun because we do fun things for the school and we make the school better. We make children happy. Student council is a great job because you have the opportunity to help children.

Where were you born?

I was born in Eccles in Manchester in 1982.

4. Feeling Safe

What did you want to be as a kid?

We feel safe because the teachers are kind and we know the school will always help us. Miss Lucie is our nurse and she is always helpful.

I really wanted to be a nurse when I was little. If I had the chance to choose again I would be a scientist.

Our budding reporters, Tom and Ellen from 4S, had the opportunity to interview Mr. Neil this term. They carefully considered what questions they wished to ask and were extremely professional journalists.

What do you like most about your job?

How long have you been in Prague and what do you think about it?

Prague is a beautiful city and I love the relaxed lifestyle. I lived here for ten years.

Have you had any other jobs apart from being a teacher?

I really enjoy making learning fun and exciting by doing lots of different projects.

I enjoy everyday because everyday is different.

Yes, I have been a cleaner, a chef and a young person’s health worker.

How long have you been a teacher?

Food?: I love pho, which is a spicy noodle soup.

I have been a primary school teacher for seven years. I have also worked as an EAL teacher in a secondary school for a year.

What is your favourite…

Colour?: My favourite colour is pink.

Which year groups have you taught?

Sport?: I have taught Reception, Year One and Year Two.

I enjoy rugby and football. I support Bolton football club.

Do you have any pets?

Music?: I have one male dog called Baxter. He is very playful and loves going for walks.

I really enjoy listening to Punk and Indie music but my guilty pleasure is pop music such as ‘The Spice Girls’.

8. An eco-friendly environment

We love Marvin because he is our school’s mascot. He’s very cute and we like watching him swimming when we are in Mr Joe’s office. We think that Marvin is Mr Joe’s security guard.

Eco warriors make the school an eco friendly place, that teaches the children to save animals and the world.

9. Being Active We get lots of opportunities to be active at school. We love residential trips because we get to visit new places with our friends and teachers. We also have a sports day, where we get to win prizes and to have a lot of fun. We enjoy school trips because we get to go out to play with our friends.

7. Being Creative At Park Lane we always have exciting and creative tasks. We loved STEM Day, where we enjoyed designing and making animal enclosures. We always have lots of fun.

6. Learning is fun Learning is fun because you can make up stories, write informations about famous people like Dr Barnardo and you can also do fun tasks. In learning, teachers give you challenges so you can learn more

Teachers make us laugh and give us feedback. They show us how to improve so we can correct our mistakes, help us and keep us safe. In addition, they make us feel smart and healthy.

2. Friends who are always there for us The friends here at Park Lane are amazing and kind. They help us and play with us and make us feel great. Park Lane helps us so that if we are afraid we always have someone to talk to.

1. Park Lane Makes us feel proud We are proud and happy, especially when we get raffle tickets. Class dojo also makes us feel proud because we get points for our achievements, from helping us to special effort with our work. We are always proud when we learn something.
