From quonset to Kerry Vickar: band plays for NESPCA Devan C. Tasa

The band began at a jam session in a quonset.

Now, they’ve played at a Northeast SPCA cabaret for the second year in a row.

Forty Ounce Philosophy performed covers of rock and country-rock music ranging from the 1950s to present, with a focus on the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, at the Jan. 14 event.

“They’re a local band. They’re from Humboldt,” said Lori Marchuk, one of the event’s organizers.

“They get the crowd going and they have their own following, so just having them, alone, brings people.

They’re really, really good.”

There were 200 tickets sold, with organizers expecting the event to sell out this year like they did last year.

“It’s after Christmas and [there’s] kind of a lull in everything,” Marchuk said. “It’s a good time for people to come out and have some fun.”

Brian Grest, the band’s vocalist/bass player, said they got involved because the lead guitarist lives in Melfort and the guitarist’s wife is active in the NESPCA. “Needless to say, when they were looking for a band, she volunteered us.”

Grest said Jan. 11 he hoped the crowd was as good as it was in 2016.

“It was a mixed crowd and our music caters to a mixed crowd, so it was a good fit.”

The vocalist/bass player said his band got together by chance.

“There were a few people in Humboldt who, through word-of-mouth, got together and just had a jam session, literally in someone’s quonset. There was never any intention to form a band,” he said.

“We were just jamming in the quonset, but we played one gig – we had our arms twisted to play one gig – and we enjoyed that so much we thought: maybe we should do this. So we did.”

The band has been together for a little more than seven years.

As for the band’s name, it came from an experience Grest had with a man who thought he was becoming more intelligent as he got drunker. So Grest called him the 40 ounce philosopher.

“When we were looking through a band name, we had run through name after name after name and just out of the blue, I had mentioned I had used that

phrase at a wedding one time and everyone went: that’s not too bad.”

Marchuk said the NESPCA was hoping to raise $5,000 at the event. All of the funds raised up to $5,000 will be matched by the Melfort Scotiabank.

While most of the funds needed to build a new animal shelter in Melfort have been raised, there’s still a need to fundraise to pay for operating costs. Those interested can donate on the NESPCA’s website.

Brenda Lee Cottrell and the Legends will perform at the Maurice Taylor Performing Arts Theatre at the Tisdale RECplex Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is presented by the Tisdale Arts Council.

Brenda Lee Cottrell grew up in a musical household. Her father was an accordion/harmonica player with a good singing voice while her mother played Johnny Cash records non-stop. By 12, she was pipe organist accompanying congregations in Melville, something she’d do for the next 20 years.

She later studied voice under Wilma Bell Wessell at the University of Regina’s Conservatory of Performing Arts. Cottrell then became a worship leader at a Regina church and performed in the television series Where The River Runs.

Musical highlights include sharing the stage with musicians like guitar player Tex Emery, Saskatchewan’s Brian Sklar and the Tex Pistols, Nashville’s John Conlee, and as an opening act for The Highwaymen at Saskatoon’s Dakota Dunes Casino.

Otis ‘Floyd’ Young is the pianist. He has played with Saskatchewan blues bands such as the Gotham City Blues Band or the Mill Street Blues Band. He was also the co-lead in Wheatland theatre’s musical Last Call.

Brian ‘Buddy’ Davis, the lead guitar and backup vocalist, has opened for such acts as the Beach Boys and Paul Revere and the Raiders. He started out with an acoustic guitar but got into the electric guitar when the British Invasion hit North America during the mid-1960s.

Ron ‘George’ Pettigrew, the bassist and backup vocalist, started as a Lions Band trumpet player.

He began playing electric bass guitar professionally at 16. Musical highlights include studio sessions for STV’s Big Sky Country as well as local bands such as the Jeffersons, Friends ’N Neighbors and Rock and Roll All Stars.

Don Young, the drummer and backup vocalist, has been a professional musician for 40 years. He has played with members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame like Martha Reeves, Little Anthony and the Imperials and John Denver.

MP fears CBC’s online effort hurts local papers Devan C. Tasa

A Conservative MP in the region is saying the CBC’s online efforts and advertising sales are harming local newspapers like the Review.

Kelly Block, who represents Carlton Trail—Eagle Creek, has sent out a flyer to her constituents that states the “CBC has become print media’s #1 competitor” and that “with its $1.1 billion subsidy, the CBC can’t lose.”

The MP said there were a few reasons she sent out the flyer. The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage is studying the Canadian media and a recurring theme is the financial impact CBC has on both large and small publications.

“As a member representing a rural riding with a number of small publications, this is concerning to me,” she wrote in an email, adding the CBC, with its large radio and television presence, needed to be held accountable on how its funding is used.

“Finally, the Minister of Canadian Heritage is in the process of holding consultations on new media and I wanted to solicit the opinions of my constituents on this issue and the role that the single largest cultural entity in Canada should play over the next decade,” she wrote.

The CBC denied that it’s having a negative effect on local newspapers.

“The challenges facing media in Canada are many but they are not being caused by the public broadcaster,” wrote CBC spokesperson Marie-Eve Desaulniers in an email. “Large newspaper companies responded to their challenges by merging and reducing the content offered by their smaller papers. This has made CBC’s presence more important than ever.”

Desaulniers said the CBC exists to serve all Canadians on every platform they use, including online. She also said that at a time where media are struggling to adapt to tremendous change and with global digital companies like Google and Facebook crowding the online Canadian market, media needs to be focused on how Canadians get information about their community and the world.

“Limiting what public broadcasting does will only mean fewer services for Canadians,” she wrote. “It won’t help private companies become more profitable. It won’t increase news coverage or the diversity of views, especially in smaller communities.”

Block said Conservative policy supports CBC’s role in radio and television, but it’s concerned about its online expansion.

“Over the past year, the public broadcaster’s increasing expansion of its online presence, which has traditionally been the domain of private news organizations, warrants a discussion on its mandate.”

year, with $253 million coming from advertising. Ten per cent of that, $25 million, came from digital advertising.

In Canada, total digital advertising revenues are $4.6 million a year, with three-quarters of that going to Google, Facebook and Yellow Pages.

“It is difficult to believe, as some media have suggested, that if only CBC was prevented from earning $25 million, their problems would be solved,” she wrote.

The spokesperson added that CBC would stop all advertising if its perperson funding was increased by $12 to $46 per year. The public broadcaster estimates that $158 million dollars in advertising would go to other Canadian media if that were to happen.

Block had no specific suggestions as to what could be done to even the playing field for digital advertisements so that local newspapers could compete against the U.S.-based Google and Facebook. Newspaper publishers have suggested that advertising from foreign owned and operated media companies shouldn’t be able to be written off as a tax-deductible expense.

“A Conservative government would lower the small business tax rate to nine per cent and would be opposed to additional payroll taxes like increased CPP contributions,” she wrote. “Anything that could be done to reduce the financial burden that businesses, including local newspapers, face would be considered.”

Council has begun consulting with stakeholders privately about the future of the Evergreen Centre.

Barry Elliott, the town’s administrator, explained that participants discussed food services as well as three submissions received by the Town in the absence of a request for proposal.

“They’re charged with reviewing the applications and kind of moving through the preliminary process,” said Elliott of the group. “Any final decision in terms of selection would be in front of council.”

Rennie Harper, the town’s mayor, clarified during the Jan. 9 council meeting that the group was not a committee. In an interview Jan. 16, Harper said that privacy was important.

“There are staff involved and sometimes names of staff come up,” she said. “I want to be respectful of staff and respectful of staff privacy.”

To that end, the discussions will remain in confidence and the stakeholders will not be named.

“We had about a dozen, 14 different people representing probably around 500 or 600 people in the community.”

Harper pointed to the golf club and curling club as examples of stakeholders.

Tender for fire truck accepted

Seven months after town council initially directed the administration to issue a tender for a new half-ton fire truck, council has accepted a tender from Nipawin Chrysler Dodge.

The 2017 half-ton truck will cost $40,333 plus tax. An additional

$5,000 will be spent on specialized equipment for the vehicle.

A member of the public forum, David Peterson, commented on the purchase.

“I’m concerned who is going to be driving it, I guess. If the guy that looked after the last fire truck looks after this one the same way, I’m really, really concerned,” said Peterson.

Bylaw enforcement officer pay questioned

A motion to increase the bylaw enforcement annual contract from $50,400 to $52,179 was tabled after Coun. Joyce Watts questioned the increase.

“I’m not sure what rationale is used for that, because I’m concerned that if you’re going to give a 3.5 per cent wage increase, does that include a 3.5 per cent wage increase to outof-scope people going down the line?”

During the Jan. 16 interview, Harper said that there might have been a mistake in the numbers and that the item is tabled for review.

Other council updates

Nipawin’s council approved a motion that would see the Village of Love join the fire suppression and rescue services agreement, which currently includes eight areas.

Darren Wouters, staff sergeant for the Nipawin RCMP detachment, reported to council that the town had a quiet month in December. Last month saw 210 calls for service compared to December 2015, which had 261.

Council formally delegated staff oversight authority to Elliott. He now holds the authority to appoint, suspend, dismiss, administer and manage all municipal staff.

was at a sporting event recently which was broadcast on television. The announcer, a man, commented on both men’s and women’s games.

He misstepped during a women’s match, commenting “she’s pretty tiny” of one of the Emma Meldrum athletes.

My Thoughts Maybe he didn’t mean to sound patronizing.

Maybe he didn’t mean to belittle this athlete for her size. Maybe he didn’t think about what he was saying.

But he did say it. And comments like that need to stop.

When sports commentators talk about male athletes, they refer to their great height, their fantastic strength, their significant weight. But for some reason, when female athletes enter the mix, it’s the opposite.

The broadcaster’s comment may have been innocent in nature, but the message beneath it is clear: women succeed in sport despite their bodies, rather than because of them.

Sexism continues to exist in sports today beyond how we speak about female athletes. Ski jumping at the Olympics was only permitted for women in 2014.

Before, the sport was considered to be “too hard” on their bodies.

In case the average person is wondering what is okay to say when talking about women’s bodies, I’ve got the answer for you: absolutely nothing.

She’s really thin? Say nothing.

She’s got lots of muscles? Say nothing.

She’s taller than a lot of men? Say nothing.

I’m not suggesting we restrict your freedom of speech. Here are some appropriate ways to comment on a female athlete.

She’s beating personal records? Congratulate her.

She’s at the top of her game? Tell the story of how she got there.

She’s leading her team to victory? Applaud her efforts.

Her body is none of your business.

Lots of demand for label space

L

abelling has become a confusing element of the food sector.

The situation has been confused by legislators not trusting science, a public antsy over anything they don’t fully understand and companies caught trying to appease everyone to ensure market share.

We have seen the confusion grow as genetically modified crops have come to market and the niche market of consumers who believe organic food is their best choice to put on the family dinner table.

Now the industry should always keep the adage of the customer always being right, but you have to be aware, at least as legislators, that consumers are often making choices based on emotion.

So the question becomes how much labelling should consumers expect on a product in the grocery store?

Most consumers, I would suggest, read such labels with a cursory glance, if at all.

Most consumers will be far more concerned with the price sticker, as they look to balance good food for the table with budgets stretched to the max.

Still, we do need labelling, labels which provide data which has been confirmed by good science, and protected by the diligence of publicly funded watchdogs such as the Canadian Food

On a side note, food safety, including labelling requirements, clearly needs to be a federal responsibility. It would make no sense to have one set of requirements in Alberta and another in Nova Scotia.

That is, however, the reality in the United States where the state of Vermont legislated GM labelling requirements specific to that state.

Can you imagine the issues which could arise in terms of marketing of even a dozen states legislated differing requirements?

But back to the basic question, what should consumers reasonably expect?

The short answer: that everything in the store follows established safety standards and is safe for consumers.

After that, labelling is largely to ensure food safety for consumers with specific needs, peanut allergies coming to mind, and secondly to let consumers

make choices based on personal preferences.

The second area of labelling of course is the one which could lead to every package having a book attached to it.

We have those seeking GM labelling, although science would suggest there is no difference.

Others want country of origin labelling as a way to support farmers in their own country, although where is the country of origin of bread baked in the U.S., with wheat imported from Australia, using canola oil for Canada, etc?

Add religious labelling, like ensuring something’s kosher or halal, and the chapters in the labelling book grow ever longer.

Information is the base of knowledge and knowledge allows for better decisions, but at the root of it all is the need to trust in the science and system behind our food, for without that trust buying groceries suddenly becomes a very scary undertaking, labels, or not.

Wounded Warriors looking at different events Emma Meldrum

Wounded Warriors Weekend won’t be back in Nipawin this year, but organizer Blake Emmons hopes to bring a new type of event to town.

Emmons and Verda Hoppe, the president of the Nipawin Legion, spoke to Nipawin Council Jan. 10 to ask if a curling bonspiel could be held at the Evergreen Centre in July.

“In the middle of the summer, you bring a whole bunch of young kids to Nipawin to learn curling,” said Emmons. “If they’ve got the ice in, why

don’t we have a bonspiel for wounded warriors, all encompassing – firefighters, policemen, RCMP, military? Part of the deal being one person on that team has to be a wounded warrior of some identification.”

Emmons noted that the timing would work well, as July is post-traumatic stress awareness month.

Rennie Harper, Nipawin’s mayor, thanked them for their work, and since passed on their request to the appropriate persons.

Emmons said the main event this year will be held in Lloydminster.

“Our whole idea being this: smaller

events every other year in smaller towns that have never met our Wounded Warriors. So we’re going to have 40 at Lloydminster, probably 40 or so near Kingston, Ont., and maybe another 20 or 30 in Nova Scotia,” he said.

Hoppe told council that the last Wounded Warriors Weekend, held in Nipawin in 2016, was a financial success.

“Financially, it was a great success for us this time, primarily because of the support of the little people,” she said.

“We really didn’t get huge amounts from corporate donations, but we were very successful again with our Legions across the province fundraising.”

Hoppe said the bulk of the foundation’s expenses went towards flights and accommodations, at a cost of $80,000.

Another $3,500 was spent on travel by board members, including travel during the Run to Remember. Insurance for the weekend event was $3,000, the cost of which was included in administration expenses, which added up to just over $4,000.

“You can see with the amount of people we bring in, which was 200 plus this year including about 52 children, that we feel [this] is more than reasonable to have for administration expenses,” said Hoppe.

Mustangs made no trades before deadline Christopher Lee

With many Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League teams busy trading to make improvements, the Melfort Mustangs remained relatively quiet.

The Mustangs made no moves prior to the deadline but it was not for a lack of effort, said Trevor Blevins, the head coach, who noted that they did some tire kicking but could not find any moves that made sense.

“We didn’t want to give up too much of the future for what we’ve got now, but in saying that, we really like our group and we’re pretty confident.”

Against Nipawin

With the deadline behind them, the Mustangs resumed their on ice activity Jan. 11 when they welcomed rival Nipawin Hawks to the Northern Lights Palace.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they were not ready to start the game and found themselves behind 3-0 by the end of the first period.

After an early goal in the second put the Mustangs behind 4-0, the team responded scoring twice in the period off the sticks of Tyler Heidt and Rock Ruschkowski but they could not cut into the Hawks’ lead. The game hit the second intermission with the Mustangs still trailing by three goals.

The teams traded third period goals as Carson Albrecht scored his second goal of the season but the Mustangs could not cut into the Hawks’ advantage as they fell 6-3.

The poor start sunk the Mustangs, said Blevins, who noted they were not ready to match the effort the Hawks started the game with.

“We needed to bring it. They took advantage of us being flat but in saying that they deserved to win.”

Against La Ronge

The Mustangs had a couple of days off before they returned to action Jan. 14 when they traveled to La Ronge to take on the last place Ice Wolves.

After a poor start against the Hawks, the Mustangs responded with an excellent first period as they grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Andrew Thompson and Reed Gunville.

Blevins was pleased to see the team respond in such a great way, noting that they are placing a big emphasis on both response within a game and response game-to-game.

The second period did not go so well for the Mustangs as they gave up the period’s only goal. They had some trouble dealing with the Ice Wolves’ forecheck, said Blevins.

The Mustangs made some adjustments in the third and it paid off in spades as they dominated the final period, outshooting the Wolves 20-4 and getting goals from Justin Ball, Matthew Hermary, Dakota Boutin and two from Albrecht as they skated away with an easy 7-1 win.

Blevins gave a lot of credit to his defensemen for their excellent third period, noting that they did a great job retrieving pucks and making smart plays exiting their own zone.

“It really translated to some quality chances off the rush and some easy breakouts where we could establish that time in the offensive zone,” said Blevins.

The game against the Hounds is an important one for the Mustangs as they come into the game 0-2 against the Hounds being outscored 13-4 in the two losses and SJHL leading scorer Ben Duperreault and SJHL rookie leading scorer Adam Dawe scoring eight points combined.

Learning the ropes of Junior B

Cole Jones and Tyrell Wenig are helping the Carrot River Outback Thunder this season while learning the ropes of Junior B hockey.

Jones, a forward, has helped in various facets of the game and has 15 points, with eight goals, in 29 games.

Wenig’s play on defence earned him a call-up earlier this season to the Junior A level.

Last week the Thunder won all three of their games at home. The team downed the Prince Albert Titans, 8-1; beat the Saskatoon Royals, 6-2; and triumphed over the West Central Rage, 5-2. The Thunder are now 14-10-7 on the season and sit fourth in the Prairie Junior Hockey League standings.

“As of late, we have kept it simple and put lots of pucks to the net and worked for rebounds,” said Trevor Logan, Carrot River’s head coach. “Goaltending has been really solid and we are getting contributions from many different guys each night.”

The Carrot River squad is in the Saskatoon area for three games this week. The Thunder take on the Saskatoon Royals on Friday and the league-leading Saskatoon AGI Insurance Quakers on Saturday. The road trip concludes with a Sunday matinee versus the Delisle Chiefs.

The 6-foot-3, 173-pound Wenig has provided size and steady play on the Thunder blue line. Logan said the 18-year-old Weldon product, who played midget AAA for Beardy’s last season, is one of the team’s top defencemen most nights. Wenig has eight points in 22 games.

“He is a steady defenceman,” Logan said. “Definitely there are not too many nights where he is in the wrong position or is getting beat.”

Logan noted that Wenig has played through injuries for Carrot River. Earlier this season he was called up to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Weyburn Red Wings for two games.

step is like and getting to experience it firsthand,” said Wenig, who builds hopper bottoms for bins at Townside Enterprise in Kinistino.

Jones is a 5-foot-8, 155-pound forward from Kinistino who goes out and competes. After racking up 52 points, with 23 goals, in just 28 games last season with the North East Wolfpack midget AA, he is adjusting this winter to the next level.

“He is getting more comfortable out there every week,” said Logan, who praised the 18-year-old’s skill set.

In addition to scoring, Logan said Jones “is doing the small things. He is backchecking well and playing well in our end.”

An agriculture business student at the University of Saskatchewan, Jones has enjoyed his time with the Thunder.

“My favourite part would probably be having a great group of guys to play with,” Jones said.

Last week

Last week’s 8-1 victory on Jan. 11 over the Titans was a team effort. Five players scored and 10 earned points in total. Some affiliated players contributed to the victory.

Goaltender Ben Gilbertson was one save short of a shutout. The 17-year-old rookie backup stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced. The only one that got past him was scored on a power play and it banked off two players, Logan said.

“He played confident and was out challenging the play aggressively,” Logan said. “Rebound control was really solid. It’s big when your second string can step in and play that way getting limited starts. Not easy to do!”

Drayden Ukrainetz netted a hat trick for the Thunder. Chandler Ashcroft had two goals and three points.

Levi Logan and Austin Linen had one goal and three points. Logan Robinson also scored for Carrot River.

A four-goal second period on Jan. 14 allowed the Thunder to banish the Royals, 6-2, in Carrot River. The two teams were tied at 1-1 at the end of first period.

Cole Jones and Levi Logan both scored twice for the Thunder. Ukrainetz and Robinson had Carrot River’s other goals. Justin Cay and Levi Logan both posted three points on the night. Thunder goalie Kolton Holmen made 36 saves.

Ian Ferguson had both of Saskatoon’s goals.

The Royals were forced to use both goalies.

David Thiel had 19 saves on 23 shots, while Jory LittJukes stopped 17 of 19 shots.

On Feb. 15, the Thunder got by the Rage, 5-2. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period. Nick Peterson and Ashcroft scored in the second session to give Carrot River a 3-1 lead that it would build on.

Holmen made 39 saves on 41 shots. Tanner Grisdale, Robinson and Ukrainetz had the Thunder’s other goals.

Tylo Anderson and Ryder Kissick scored for the Rage. Dallan Tuchscherer had 39 saves.

Hawks make big trade moves before deadline Christopher Lee

It was a busy week for the Nipawin Hawks as they navigated the trade deadline while balancing a trio of hockey games.

The week kicked off for the Hawks with the Jan. 10 deadline, where they were busy making a pair of moves to bolster their line-up.

One big trade move was acquiring Melville Millionaires leading scorer Keegan Milligan in exchange for defenseman Eric Soar and a 2017 fifth round draft pick.

Doug Johnson, the Hawks’ head coach and general manager, noted Milligan was someone they have targeted for quite some time.

“We’re very happy to acquire Keegan.

We think he’s going to be a big part of our success and really strengthens our topend forward group for sure.”

The 20-year-old Emerald Park native comes to the Hawks with a wealth of experience, having played parts of five seasons in the SJHL and BCHL with three different teams including Notre Dame and Melville.

Milligan is a proven scorer in the league this season, having put up 34 points in 37 games prior to the move to Nipawin.

The trade made sense for the Hawks, said Johnson, and including Soar also made sense for the player as they looked to give him a fresh start with a new team. “[We’re] thankful for everything he did here, but sometimes kids just need to hear a different voice to take the next step.”

The other key move the Hawks made prior to the deadline was bringing in defenseman Tanner Reynolds from the La Ronge Ice Wolves in exchange for the list rights to Austin Bill and Justin Bill.

A big kid like Reynolds will provide the team with a little more of a defensive presence on the blue line since he can play the hard minutes, said Johnson.

“Tanner’s a guy we got excellent recommendations on from his former coaches in Weyburn, we had some assets La Ronge wanted. It made sense for both parties.”

The 20-year-old Calgary native has spent parts of four seasons in the AJHL and SJHL splitting his time between three other clubs, including the Weyburn Red Wings and the Ice Wolves.

Reynolds is not known for his offense as he joins the Hawks with a career high nine points in 38 games this season.

Crash near Wapiti

Johnson was pleased to be able to acquire both players, noting that both players filled a need the team identified heading into the trade deadline.

Against Melfort

After a busy deadline, the Hawks returned to the ice with their new team on Jan. 11 when they traveled to Melfort to take on the rival Mustangs.

The Hawks jumped out to a huge 3-0 lead in the first period as Michael Grant, Tanner Thompson and Eric Bolden all found the back of the net.

The final two periods were much less dominant for the Hawks as the Mustangs played them evenly, with both teams scoring three goals. Bolden, Brett Harasymuk and Keillan Olson all scored to lift the Hawks to a 6-3 win.

The huge first period was the difference maker in the game, said Johnson, and he noticed the team sit back a little too much in the final two periods.

“We made some mistakes and let the game get a little closer than we had wanted, but [I’m] still happy with everything.”

After the prior weeks, Johnson said this will give his guys a bit of a confidence boost.

Against Melville

The Hawks had a day off before they were back in action as they visited the Millionaires, with Milligan making his first trip back since the trade.

The first period saw the Hawks get off to a great start as they scored twice and never looked back en route to a dominating 10-1 win.

Michael Grant led the way offensively for the Hawks finishing the night with three goals and two assists, while seven other Hawks finished with at least two points.

The offensive explosion was great to see, said Johnson.

Bringing in players like Milligan and Josh Bly the deadline prior was an effort to try to boost the offense but Johnson did not expect ten goals in a game.

The coach said offense was the team’s largest need before the deadline, with those two players, as well as Eric Bolden and Brandan Arnold providing that.

Against Yorkton

Coming off the big 10-1 win, the Hawks wrapped up their week on home ice the following night as they slipped past the Yorkton Terriers 5-3.

battling back, said Johnson.

“Something, in the past, that we haven’t been able to do is come from two goals down and it was very nice to see on Saturday night,” he said.

Confidence booster

Mounting that comeback is a huge confidence booster for the Hawks, and they will have the confidence that they can comeback from any deficit, said Johnson. “[It] kind of makes them almost invincible in their own mind and that’s what you need in playoffs is you’re never out of a game and you know you’re going to win.”

Grant had an excellent week for the Hawks as he finished five goals and three assists in the three games and was named the SJHL Player of the Week as a result.

Johnson was not surprised to see Grant excel so well on the scoresheet this week, noting that it has been a progression from him week after week. “[He’s] playing a little faster, going to the gritty areas more and making sure he’s doing all the little things and the big thing with him too is his work ethic is unmatched.”

Looking ahead after a busy week, the Hawks enjoy

a much lighter week with a single game as they welcome the Millionaires to the Cage on Jan. 21.

With so many new faces now in the fold, Johnson said this week will be a great opportunity to get some more competitive practices in with the new players.

“There’s going to be competition for ice time, there’s going to be competition just to even get into the lineup. If the guys keep battling amongst themselves harder than they do in games, it’s going to make us very strong in the second half of the year.”

In Loving Memory of

Isabelle CRESSMAN

Isabelle Cressman passed from this life on December 31, 2016, Tisdale, SK at the age of 92.

Isabelle Ellams was born in Davidson, Sk. May 5, 1924 to John and Eleanor (Jackson) Ellams. Isabelle married into the Hamerston family. In 1948, a son Wayne Ronald Hamerston was born. The relationship ended in a divorce.

Isabelle, known as Belle, worked as a waitress at the Watrous Coffee Shop, at that time she met Keith Israel Cressman. They were married in Melfort on March 15, 1952.

Keith and Belle made their home in Ridgedale. On December 4, 1953 their rst son Brian was born. On September 5, 1956 their second son Wade was born.

July 1961, Isabelle and Keith moved their house to Tisdale across from the old Tisdale Hospital. As Keith was very busy with Keith’s Decorating, Belle had her hands full raising two boys and stepson Alan. Alan being older, would work more with his dad, helping him out at times.

Belle had a large vegetable garden, sh pond and ower beds. Not only was she busy keeping up the house and yard in town, Keith was buying up cabins at Kipabiskau Lake, every weekend, the family, would go to the lake to work on the cabins. When nished the cabins they were eventually sold. In 1984, the last cabin was sold.

Belle was involved with the Eastern Star. She square danced with the “Sasko Swingers” and “Eldersley Dippers”. She loved bowling, going to Bingo and playing cards. As times changed, Scratch card Bingo was the next best thing.

She babysat her grandchildren too numerous times to count. Belle also babysat for various people in town. Then in 1989, Belle came to her daughter-inlaw’s shop, Donna’s Flowers, to help look after her grandsons Michael who was just born and Doug. This way Donna was able to continue to work. Then in 1991, Brandon was born, one more busy boy to handle.

It became to be too much after six months having little ones at the store so Donna’s parents took the two boys to look after them. Doug and Belle stayed on at the store. Belle continued to walk down or be dropped off, rain or shine, to help out at the store. She ran the till, cut fresh owers, cleaned and watered plants. She would tackle everything and anything. We still laugh at how efcient she was. Donna had an articial plant that looked so real that it was pruned and watered along with the live ones. Belle stayed on until 2004 when her health was starting to fail.

Belle loved to visit friends and family. A good card game would make her evenings y by.

Belle was predeceased by her parents John and Eleanor, son Wayne Ronald Hamerston, husband Keith, son Brian, twin brother Walter, brothers: Jack, Jim and Bill, and sisters: Mary, May, Ethel and Eleanor.

Left to cherish her memory is her son Wade (Donna) and their children Michael and Brandon, step-son Alan, grandchildren: Gerri Lane (Mike) and their children Nastasha and Ty, Lynda (Dallas) and her children Avery and Brooklyn, Doug (Trudy) and their daughter Emily and Terry (Shelley) and their daughters Kylie and Makenna, sister-in-law Ruth Wickett as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan as a token of remembrance.

In Loving Memory of

Carol Diane COTE

Carol Diane Cote passed from this life January 6, 2017 Tisdale, SK at the age of 71.

Carol Diane (Whitelaw) Cote was born December 5, 1945, the third child of John and Aileen Whitelaw.

Carol grew up on a farm northeast of McKague. Carol started her schooling at the Frankland school, then nished in McKague. At the age of 18, Carol met Murray Cote, the love of her life. They wed on August 30, 1963 in Tisdale, SK. Soon after the wedding, they purchased an old truck and a small mobile home, and hit the road. Murray’s new job took them to Regina, once settled they were soon expecting their rst child Lorretta Ellen, 1964.

From 1964 - 1971 they moved many of times for work, these places being Regina, Sutherland, Allen, Hudson Bay, Tisdale and more. Alvin Murray arrived in 1968. For these years Carol was a stay at home mom. Carman Douglas was born in 1971, by this point Lorretta was in school. So they decided to make Bjorkdale their permanent home. Carol and Murray purchased a house, moved it to Bjorkdale and renovated it to make it their forever home.

In 1972, Carol and Murray decided to take over the family farm. Carol enjoyed the farming years, as she enjoyed cooking and taking meals to the boys in the eld.

Finally their last child Dorothy Eileen was born in 1974. Later that year, Carol and Murray started their own business, Cote’s Trenching. Carol soon became the secretary, taking calls and booking Murray’s work.

Carol’s passion for cooking allowed her to host many dinner parties; Often having everyone over for Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving. Christmas was her favorite, she would often have the house packed full of people, food, and decorations. When her siblings, Robert, Betty, and Ken came with their families, it was her absolute favorite time. Laughter was heard late into the night.

Carol and Murray loved to travel, visiting Seattle, Salt Lake City, and Alaska.

Once the children were grown, Carol took to traveling around with Murray again for work. In 1985, she became a grandmother, by 1997 she had ve granddaughters and two grandsons. Carol loved spending time with them, from picking them up from school, to making them peanut butter and jam sandwiches. In 2007, she had her rst great granddaughter, soon followed three great grandsons.

In 2009, Carol became ill, she did her best to take care of herself and Murray.

In 2011, she was diagnosed with vascular dementia. As the years went by, she was unable to take care of herself and was placed in St. Brieux nursing home. She soon after was moved to Newmarket Place making it her home until her passing. Carol was loved by so many, and her memories will be cherished by all.

Carol was predeceased by her husband Murray Cote, son Alvin Cote, parents John and Aileen Whitelaw, grandparents Robert and Ruby Wright, James and Elizabeth Whitelaw and in-laws Theodore (Ted) and Ellen Cote.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter - Lorretta (Rodrick) Jolly Saskatoon, son - Carman Cote, Bjorkdale and daughter - Dorothy (David) Duhaime, Bjorkdale; grandchildren: Vanessa (Jarrett) Varga, Saskatoon, James Jolly, Saskatoon, Christina (Kenneth) Gamble, Saskatoon, Melissa Jolly, Airdrie AB, Stephanie Duhaime, Saskatoon, Rebecca Duhaime, Bjorkdale and Greyden Duhaime, Bjorkdale; great grandchildren: Annalise Jolly, Airdrie, Bryce Varga, Saskatoon, Evan Varga, Saskatoon and Emerson Varga, Saskatoon; siblings: brother Robert Whitelaw, Tisdale, sister Betty Whitelaw, Spruce Grove, AB and brother Ken Whitelaw, Melfort as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 12, 2017 from Bjorkdale Community Hall, Bjorkdale, SK. Ofciating was Pastor Brian Friesen.

Tribute was by son-in-law David Duhaime.

Register attendants were friends: Mabel Fredsberg and Gloria Beeching.

Ushers were great nephews: Orin Bratton and Kevin Bratton.

Casketbearers were grandchildren: Vanessa Varga, Jarrett Varga, James Jolly, Christina Gamble, Kenneth Gamble, Melissa Jolly, Stephanie Duhaime, Rebecca Duhaime and Greyden Duhaime.

Honourary bearers were nieces and nephews: Wanda Jackson, Brenda Prosko, Glen Whitelaw, Glenda Little, Clint Whitelaw, Dwayne Jabusch, Lee Whitelaw, Lisa Whitelaw, Darrell Whitelaw, Traci-Lynn Yelle, Angela Janson and Justin Whitelaw.

Interment followed in the Bjorkdale Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Newmarket Place Auxiliary or Canadian Diabetes Association as a token of remembrance.

Earl Emil McCORRISTON

Earl Emil McCorriston was born on June 4, 1942, Tisdale, SK passed from this life on January 2, 2017, Saskatoon, SK at the age of 74.

Celebration of life was held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from the Ridgedale Community Hall, Ridgedale, SK. Ofciating was Pastor Dave McPherson.

Eulogy was by David Baxter.

Special music by Marilyn Kindrat.

Casketbearers were: Todd McCorriston, Bruce Edwards, Cory Reed, Todd Arneson, Troy Arneson and Curtis Sturby.

Private family interment followed in the Ridgedale Cemetery Donations may be made to Ridgedale Cemetery as a token of remembrance.

Eulogy for Earl McCorriston (June 4, 1942-January 2, 2017) Earl was born on June 4, 1942 in Tisdale, SK. He grew up on the farm where his parents, Wellington and Hertha had homesteaded about three and half miles northwest of Armley. Earl was the eldest of four boys. Their father passed away when Earl was six years old, and his mother kept the family farm.

Earl attended Manlius School from Grades 1-8 and then attended Tisdale School from Grades 9-12. He was involved in the 4-H beef Club. Earl had to learn farming quickly from hired hands and neighbors. As a teenager, Earl’s main entertainment was to walk to Armley where he could watch the hockey games on television.

After Grade 12, Earl went to work for Healey Construction. He had various jobs working for local farmers, operating the patrol for the RM of Connaught, working in northern construction and construction of the Nipawin and Diefenbaker Hydrodams.

Earl met Betty (Elizabeth) Maier on a farm near Ridgedale where they were summer employed. Earl and Betty were married on June 6, 1964. They were blessed with four children. Neil in March, 1968, Kevin in February of 1970, Heather in June, 1972 and Karen in July, 1973.

Earl and Betty settled on the family farm in Armley. The farm was named River Acres Stock Farm. Flooding in the 1970’s forced the relocation of the mixed farming operation, to the present farm, eighteen miles north of Tisdale.

Earl had a commercial herd of Shorthorn cows. He purchased his rst purebred Shorthorn in 1970. The herd continued to grow to 100 purebred cows and 25 commercial cows. His cattle were his pride and joy, and secretly Betty’s too.

Earl spent many hours involved in 4-H with Neil and Kevin and lots of time watching his children participate in ringette, curling and hockey. He served on various boards and committees. Earl was elected to the local School Board for 18 years and Chairman for 14 years. Other boards included the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Saskatchewan Cattle Breeders and the Saskatchewan Livestock Association.

He also served as President of both the Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association, and the Canadian Shorthorn Association.

It seems accurate to say that Earl was like a grizzly bear on the outside but a teddy bear on the inside. He loved to give whisker rubs to any niece, nephew or grandchild he could catch. Earl loved his grandchildren dearly. Earl will be well remembered for his signature phrases and choice of words, armchair curling, old time dancing, card playing and coffee sessions at the local café.

Earl was predeceased by his parents Wellington and Hertha, brothers Larry and Lorne, parents-in-law Fritz and Amelia, and sister-in-law Esther.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Betty, children: Neil (Lisa) and son Carson, Kevin (Colette) and children Ireland and Tieran, Heather (Steve) and Karen (Allan) and children Austin and Amy. Brother Harry (Eileen), sisters-in-law Jeanne and Joy, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Honourary bearers were everyone who shared a laugh, a coffee or a farming story with Earl.

Mabel Helen McPHEE

Mabel Helen McPhee passed from this life on January 2, 2017, Middle Lake, SK at the age of 90.

Mabel was born September 3, 1926, in Carmen, Manitoba, the fourth child in a family of three brothers and seven sisters. The family moved to a farm at Sylvania, SK, when Mabel was two-years old and she had fond memories of helping her dad in the barns and gardens. She attended Golburn District School, went on to earn a teaching certicate and taught in Franklin, Melfort and Salopian Schools. Mabel met Hector McPhee while teaching at Salopian School and they were married in June, 1950. They lived on a farm east of Tisdale where their two children, Donna and Dale were born. The family moved a number of times in Saskatchewan for Hector’s work.

Mabel returned to Tisdale in 1980 and lived in MacKay Tower from 1991 until January 2016, when she moved into Bethany Care Assisted Living at Middle Lake. She enjoyed her time there and in September celebrated her 90th birthday with family and the other residents. Over the past number of years, she enjoyed wonderful care and cherished friendships with the home care staff in both Tisdale and Middle Lake. She will be remembered as a loyal friend, always kind and thoughtful.

Mabel was predeceased by her parents Jim and Mary Lee, husband Hector, sister Shirley and brotherin-law Harvey Graham, sister-in-law Violet Lee, sister Dorothy and brother-in-law Osborne Craig, and her sister, Isabelle Hunt.

Left to cherish Mabel’s memory are her daughter Donna (Don), grandchildren Shane and Aaron Carter and great-granddaughter Abigail Carter Wilson, son Dale (Linda), grandchildren Sara McPhee-Knowles (Lucas), Ryan and Lucas McPhee, her siblings Ted Lee, Bob (Jenny) Lee, Margaret (Jim) Ellis, Jean (Ted) Arnold, Kathy (Clarence) Reed, Ray (Bernice) Lee and Linda (Finlay) McLeod, brother-in-law Alton Hunt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 in Barron’s Funeral Chapel, Tisdale, SK. Ofciating was Rev. Doug Hallman.

Honorary bearers were all who shared in Mabel’s life.

Private family interment was held in Tisdale Cemetery, Tisdale.

In Loving Memory of

The family of the late Roy Ernest Bradley, wish to announce his passing, to be with our Lord and Saviour, on January 11, 2017. Roy was born in the Traynor and Salter area near Landis, SK on August 9, 1922, the rst born son of George and Maude Bradley. He was raised on the farm and spent the largest part of his life on one, with the exception of the years he served with Saskatoon Light Infantry in WWII. In 1951, Roy married Hyacinth Jane Thompson and started a family on the farm near Kew Gardens, east of Lac Vert, SK. Mom and dad raised a family of nine there until in 1990, when all the kids were gone, they moved to Melfort, as mom was ill with cancer. Mom passed away in February of 1992.

Dad continued to live in Melfort and on December 3, 1994, he married Leola (nee: Pladson) Bradley.

Roy was predeceased by both his parents and all his siblings; his wife of 40 years, Hyacinth Jane Bradley; his son Lloyd Douglas Bradley and his daughter Catherine Jean Bradley.

He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 22 years, Leola (nee: Pladson) Bradley; his sons: Lyle (Lorraine) Bradley, Brian (Catherine) Bradley, Garth Bradley, David (Carol) Bradley; his daughters: Beverly (Larry) Papp, Shirley (Cecil) Munro and June (Brian) Buburuz.

Dad was a loving father, grandfather and husband who will be sadly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral service for Roy was held from the Lac Vert Hall, Lac Vert, SK on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Dave MacPherson ofciating.

The interment followed in the Pleasantdale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Aaron Bradley, Paul Bradley, Chad Munro, Drew Munro, Josh Bradley, Callum Bradley, Regan Bradley and Spencer Bradley. Ushers were Mervin Nord and Ken Ingram, the memorial book was attended to by Irene Vipond and Linda Ingram, the eulogy was given by Dave Bradley and Beverly Papp, and the organist for the service was Welma Breiter.

Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Association of Saskatchewan.

Eileen Annie Lupien passed from this life January 2, 2017, Porcupine Plain, SK at the age of 82.

Eileen was born on May 19, 1934. Her parents were Fred and Mildred Dixon who lived east of Bjorkdale. She lived in Bjorkdale area until after grade one when her family moved to BC, rst to Langley then to Victoria.

When she was nine, Mildred passed away and Eileen and her sister Emily moved back to Bjorkdale to live with Grandpa and Grandma Kelly. Several years later her father remarried and the girls moved back to Victoria to live with him. Unfortunately, her dad became terminally ill and the two girls moved back to Bjorkdale and lived with Grandpa and Grandma Kelly once again.

Eileen married Paul Lupien on July 7, 1952 in Tisdale. They had a homestead northeast of Bjorkdale on the Peesane grid. Paul passed away on April 27, 1983.

She married Herman Lupien on July 5, 1984. She moved to his acreage also northeast of Bjorkdale with her mother-in-law. Herman passed away June 24, 2005. She stayed on the acreage until November 2010 when she moved to Chelan with Ron Back. She stayed there until her passing.

Eileen was always an active person enjoying gardening and having owers. She had lots of interests and loved shing, hunting and camping. She also had a great love of music and loved to dance. Although she never had children of her own she had a special connection with Herman’s four boys, treated them as her own.

Celebration of life was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017, from Bjorkdale Community Hall.

Ofciating was Rev. Douglas Hallman.

Music was by Maurice Taylor and the Bjorkdale Choir.

Tribute was by Terry Lupien.

Register attendants were Louise Berger and Sandra Horn.

Urnbearer was Dwayne Lupien.

Honorary bearers were all who shared in Eileen’s life.

Interment followed in the Bjorkdale Cemetery, Bjorkdale, SK. Donations may be made to the ALS Society of Saskatchewan, 90C Cavendish Street, Regina, SK S4N 5G7 as a token of remembrance.

Blessings abound at Malanka in Nipawin Emma Meldrum

The Northeast celebrated Malanka at Nipawin’s Evergreen Centre with food, dancing and lots of laughter.

The room was immediately abuzz when Terry Youzwa, master of ceremonies, asked hosts and hostesses to bless everyone sitting at their respective tables.

“The entire family receives a number of blessings in order to ensure health and prosperity in the new year,” Youzwa said.

Steve Rudy spoke on behalf of the congregation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Sts. Peter and Paul.

“May the Christmas spirit fill your home with everything your heart holds dear,” Rudy said. “May it bring to one and all much happiness and Christmas cheer.”

The 29th annual Malanka celebration on Jan. 14 acted as a fundraiser for the church. Shawna Kozun, one of the event’s organizers, said it attracts a diverse group.

“That has really been a trend lately, is to attend this celebration, because they aren’t Ukrainian,” said Kozun. “I think it’s for the cultural experience.”

Kozun has been involved in Malanka in one way or another for almost three decades. She wants to pass on Ukrainian traditions to her children.

“I think it’s important for them to know where they came from and how hard their ancestors worked to get to Canada. We have something really special and unique,” said Kozun, whose great-grandmother immigrated to this country many years ago.

This year’s event saw Kalyna, a Ukrainian band from Winnipeg, provide entertainment alongside Nipawin Veselii Dancers and Carrot River Ukrainian Dance Club.

Jenna Chorney played the role of Malanka and Austyn Kozun was Vasylko. According to legend, Vasylko rescues Malanka from Adlad, the God of the Underworld, who has captured the young maiden and held her in his underground kingdom.

“The folkloric event of Malanka continues to be adopted to our Canadian way of life based on some practices in the Ukraine,” Youzwa told the crowd. “Keep in mind that each village, town or city has a somewhat different version of celebrating this joyous occasion.”
