Raising money for the Saskatchewan Paediatric Auditory Rehabilitation Centre (SPARC) was the main goal of the Saskatchewan Elks/Royal Purple Walk-A-Thon held in Nipawin. The actual Walk-A-Thon was held on

Oct. 17, but members from the Elks and Royal Purple were in town on Oct. 16 for executive meetings.

Oct. 17 started out with a march from the senior’s centre in Nipawin to the cenotaph by the Legion Hall.

“We just completed now our march to the cenotaph to honour our fallen soldiers and, as you

notice, we’re all in full purple and wearing our regalia to honour those soldiers,” said Maurice Koszman, Elks of Canada Grand Lodge Inner Guard and immediate past president of the Saskatchewan Elks Association.

“Because of our age we decided to cut the route shorter,” said Rick Gracia, past president of the Nipawin Elks.

Their route started at the Senior’s Centre, went to the Legion and Fas Gas, then back towards the Centennial Arena, into the fairgrounds, then back to the centre.

There were around 60 people who were able to participate in the WalkA-Thon this year, which is low compared to other years.

“We wish we could get more out. The [members are] not coming out as much as they used to. Well we’re getting older and whatnot, but yeah wish we could get more people out for it,” said Barry Off, provincial president of the Saskatchewan Elks Association.

“We’re trying to sort of think of a new way of doing it to improve it and make it more accessible to local lodges to get involved because they don’t want to come to the one then they can have their own in their own community instead,” said Tarr.

The provincial WalkA-Thon will still be held in October each year, but lodges will be encouraged to hold their own so more funds can be raised for SPARC. Although the number of people at the actual Walk-A-Thon was lower, they still were able to raise approximately $23,000 by the end of the weekend.

Anne Boxall, member of the Nipawin Royal Purple and co-ordinator for the event, said that number will rise as all the donations will not be totalled up for a couple of weeks.

After the Walk-A-Thon was finished, the Elks and Royal Purple had a banquet on the evening of Oct. 17. After the meal, there were several speakers and a presentation by Dr. Lynne Brewster, program head of SPARC. Brewster talked about how far the program has come with the help of the Walk-A-Thon and the fact

that this was the 40th year of the Walk-A-Thon. She said this event is very important because SPARC is really one of a kind.

“There really aren’t any rehabilitation services for children under the age of three [with hearing loss] in the entire province,” said Brewster. “We basically attempt to provide that support to families that they need. We also work with the Saskatchewan Cochlear Implant Program and provide the majority of the candidate selection and again follow up with rehabilitation with that population.”

After Brewster’s presentation, a family came up to talk about their experience and benefits they’ve had from the SPARC program.

Karen Lysyshyn talked about her and her husband’s, Jeff Klein, experience with their son Oscar.

Lysyshyn talked about the many ups-and-downs they had with Oscar since he was born. From the newborn hearing screening test he failed after birth, to being told their son was hearing impaired and possibly autistic, to now where their three-year-old son is not showing signs of autism and can hear with the help of cochlear implants.

Koszman said these testimonials are important to the event and they have someone come in each year.

“We always have a child here that we have helped just to show again how much it means to that family. You might have a three-year-old that has hearing problems and we’ve been able to help them,” he said. “It brings a tear to every eye in the house, every year.”

After the testimonial there were donations from different clubs around the province, a social and prize draws. The big draw was a draw for a quad or $7,500. Tickets were sold for the last few months on this draw.

William Isley, president of the Nipawin Elks, said the event went very smoothly this year and was happy with the turnout.

“We are proud we can be part of this event and that we’re able to help children with their hearing and I hope it continues on for many years,” said Isley.

Election crazies

I

t’s been a long few months with the election seeming to drag on at times, but it’s done and over with now.

Canada now has a Liberal majority government.

Now, no matter what your political stance is, I think we can all agree this election made us a little bit crazy at times. No matter where you were, you always were reminded there was an election going on. When you drove around town you saw signs, if you were watching TV there were commercials and on social media there was an onslaught of election information and misinformation.

There were tons of people sharing articles or infographics that were so wrong they were almost laughable. But no matter what, people still shared away and some got into arguments on Facebook about the information that was shared.

It was entertaining to watch, but in the end I really hoped people took the time to look up the parties’ real platforms because that was the only way to know what everyone stood for.

It would be great if there was only correct information on the Internet, but this is just not possible.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what everyone posted on Facebook or Twitter, it mattered that people went out and voted, which I think Canadians did. No matter what you think of the turnout, I’m just glad to see people, both young and old, at the voting stations this year and hope to see the same in the future.

For now, the election crazies are over and you may return to your daily lives.

HowTa Look at the News * Maurice Stewart, 22, had evaded police for quite a while as he was wanted for armed robbery in Cleveland. He was arrested in August thanks to a good description, most notably his one-of-a-kind tattoo of a semiautomatic rifle just below his right eye. That would give a guy away, wouldn’t it? * Chuck Shepherd’s crew notes that nearly every courthouse forces visitors to walk through a metal detector after leaving pocket contents (wallets, keys, etc.) in bins. Isaac Phillips, 24, faced several charges from a courthouse visit in Cincinnati because, among the items he had to remove from his pocket, were a drug scale and a razor blade. After a short chase which did involve a Tasar, he was arrested. * A 49-year-old Moose Jaw man drove himself to the police station to turn himself in for impaired driving.

By the time he arrived, his vehicle had obviously been involved in a collision. One tire was flat. Sgt. Cliff Froehlich of the Moose Jaw Police Service said, “He was impaired and he was arrested on scene, in our parking lot.” Froehlich continued, “Usually impaired drivers don’t contact the police when they have considered themselves to be impaired while operating a vehicle.” His advice to drivers who would like to turn themselves in when they are impaired would be to pull over, park the vehicle, and call police. * In New Hartford, N.Y., two young men were beaten to death by relatives and fellow members of an upstate New York church. The pummeling was to get them to confess their sins, but it is unclear as to what those sins were supposed to be. Police said spiritual “counselling” at the Word of Life church turned into an hours-long attack in which Lucas Leonard, 19, and his 17-year-old brother, Christopher, were pummeled with fists and kicked. The brothers’ parents, Bruce and Deborah Leonard, were charged with manslaughter in Lucas’ death. Four other adults were charged with assault in the younger brother’s beating, including Sarah Ferguson, 33, the victims’ sister.

* Seth Meyers: “A skydiver uploaded a video of himself yesterday jumping out of a plane and solving a Rubik’s cube during free fall. And to prove that he actually solved it, the funeral was open casket.” * This is True reported this weird story about another loser. A woman arrived at her Manatee, Fla., home to discover a man inside the house, carrying a backpack. Suspecting that the knapsack contained her belongings, she immediately confronted him. She did find her own jewelry and credit cards e among the items spilled. She wouldn’t let the man go until he agreed to let her take several photos of his face with her cell phone camera, and remove the socks covering his hands so he would have to open the door with his bare hands, leaving fingerprints. He complied, before fleeing. Deputies looked at the pictures and promptly identified the suspect as Steven Haynes, 26, again thanks to the distinct tattoo on his chest that she included in the photo.

Deputies discovered Haynes was due to appear for a drug test the next day. Haynes not only showed up, but when searched he was found to have drug paraphernalia — and six doses of alleged heroin. He was charged with burglary, drug offenses, and probation violations. * Yann Marcotte had swum at the municipal pool in Ste-Julie, Que., for 12 years. But this year, new pool rules required everyone to wear a swimming cap, even if they don’t have long hair. Marcotte complained that a bathing cap is too hot, so he refused to put one on. “It is not the law. It is just a pool rule,” he said. When the police were called, he insisted he is not a criminal. He complained to the city recreation board, but when they turned down his appeal, he stopped swimming at the pool. In his mind, he has a great reason for not wearing a cap… he’s bald. * In San Diego, Don Pellmann, 100, set world records in the 100-meter dash, the high jump, long jump, shot put and discus. Alex Kaseberg joked, “He also set a world record in the ‘Going to the Bathroom by Himself Without Dying’ event.” * Paul Neaverson, 61, drew a knife on a bank teller in Rainham, Kent, England, and demanded 500

pounds. He didn’t want to be a total pain, so he asked the teller to simply deposit the money into his account. The teller hit his panic button.

Neaverson turned to leave, but he was disarmed by another customer and police arrived quickly to arrest him. It was his second unsuccessful bank robbery of the day. Even his attorney admitted Neaverson was an idiot. “There was no disguise. It was ridiculous. It only had one ending,” Danny Moore told the judge.

The robbery had little chance of succeeding anyway since the tellers are behind reinforced bullet-proof glass.

Unless the tellers are equally stunned and hand the money over, such a robbery should never work. Neaverson had landed a job on the Greek island of Corfu, and needed the money to get there. Instead, he was sent to jail for two years. * Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to host The Apprentice even though his last movie Terminator Genesis did a half billion box office. “He said the son he had with his housekeeper is doing just great,” added Hamilton.

“The teenager is half-German and half Mexican, so there’s not a border in the world that’ll stop this kid.” * Near Columbia, Tenn., Hayden Vandiver, 51, admits he stole his exboss’s truck and $60,000 trailer. He admitted he felt great “hurting his boss” by driving the vehicles into a four-foot deep creek. Vandiver had quit his job over a year ago because he didn’t like the way his boss treated employees. Of course, there is always the other side to the story. The boss said he fired Vandiver because he used the company credit card for personal purchases. Vandiver freely gave the info that he was on drugs when he stole the truck and also had an ulterior motive. He wanted to be caught so he would go to jail and be away from his wife. Vandiver was charged with burglary, vandalism, and DUI. * A report says a growing number of Californians believe the drought is not real but a government conspiracy.

Farm safety, milk and honey were just some of the topics at the Farm to Fork event held at Central Park Elementary School in Nipawin. Grade 3s from Central Park and Grade 4s from Wagner Elementary School got some lessons on the farm Oct. 14.

The event, put on by Ministry of Agriculture’s Tisdale Regional Office, is in its second year of existence, but this was the first time it was held in Nipawin.

“We knew that Farm to Fork had visited Tisdale Elementary School last year,” said Shelley Pierlot, principal of Central Park. “I heard great reviews regarding this Ministry of Ag project so wanted to bring it to my school. It’s recommended for Grade 3 and 4 students so we invited Wagner to join us this morning and then my Grade 3s are involved this afternoon.”

Alicia Sopatyk, a regional livestock specialist based out of Tisdale with the Ministry of Agriculture, said this program is designed to help students learn about the link between the farm and food.

“Students and people in general are more removed from the farm these days and so this is a great way to get back in there and get that idea back in their head about what agriculture is and really where their food comes from,” said Sopatyk.

“We come directly to their schools, bring a few different stations related to agriculture, such as farm safety, livestock, crops, grocery and honey, and basically they learn about those commodities at those stations and hopefully at the end of the day they know a little bit more between farm and fork,” she said.

Along with members of the ministry of agriculture participating in some of the stations, there were also several partners who brought information and helped make the event possible.

“We also have a dairy station hosted by Sask. Milk. General production and basically a game hosted by agriculture in the classroom. Farm safety hosted by the Tisdale Farm Credit Canada office and water hosted by the Carrot River Valley Watershed Association and last but not least grocery hosted by Pineland Co-op in Nipawin,” said Sopatyk.

Along with the stations the kids were able to check out, there was also a lunch provided by the Co-op.

Pierlot said the event went very well and it fit well into their curriculum.

“I think that this will really add a hands-on approach for the students today and so they’ll get a chance to meet people from the industry and they’ll learn a lot about agriculture today. Our Grade 3s just completed a soils unit so this will add some interest to that unit,” she said.

As for next year, Sopatyk said Farm to Fork will be back and hopefully in another community in the Northeast.

The Prince Albert riding managed to resist the Liberal red tide sweeping the nation, re-electing Randy Hoback with the Conservatives for a third term.

“The reality is the people have spoken. I’m lucky to represent the people and riding of Prince Albert again,” Hoback said. “I’m very happy with that aspect; I feel very privileged and honoured that they put their confidence back in me.”

Yet Prince Albert wasn’t totally immune to the swing to the Liberals. His share of the vote went down 12.4 per cent to 49.8 per cent. Lon Borgerson with the New Democrats, which came in second place, saw his party’s share of the vote go down 3.3 per cent to 28.5 per cent. Gordon Kirkby with the Liberals, who came in third, saw his party’s vote go up 16.3 per cent to 19.8 per cent. Hoback got 19,679 votes, Borgerson got 11,244 and Kirkby got 7,836.

In the other two Northeast ridings, Cathay Wagantall with the Conservatives won Yorkton—Melville with 60 per cent of the vote and Georgina Jolibois with the New Democrats won Desnethé—Missinippi— Churchill River with 34 per cent of the vote. As Jolibois won by only 70 votes, there will be a recount.

While Hoback said he was happy to be back, he had mixed feelings about the Oct. 19 election.

“In the same breath, I’m sad. I’ve got some colleagues that were very good Members of Parliament that are no longer there and we’re going to miss them for sure,” he said.

Hoback said he felt fairly confident he would win the seat again.

“When we doorknocked, we did a lot of doors and for somebody to take over this riding, they would have to gain some 10,000 votes and you would hear that; you would feel that. We didn’t see that at all.”

Yet that didn’t stop Hoback from being nervous, especially when he saw the Liberal sweep of Atlantic Canada’s 32 seats. It was only when CTV declared him elected that he – and his supporters celebrating at his Prince Albert campaign office – could breathe again.

The NDP’s Lon Borgerson, who came in second place for the Prince Albert riding, played his “Heave Steve” song – sung to the tune of “Monster Mash” – before giving his concession speech at the Prince Albert Union Centre Oct. 19.

There were some differences for the Conservatives locally in this election.

“It was a little harder to get volunteers this time compared with other times,” Hoback said. “Having said that, we had a great core, a great team of volunteers that got the signs up, got the office co-ordinated, got the scrutineers co-ordinated.”

Hoback said he’s not sure what opposition is going to be like, but the Conservatives will keep the Liberals accountable, trying to ensure a Justin Trudeau government doesn’t do anything to wreck the TPP and CETA trade deals as well as taking them to task about their plan to incur deficits.

“He’s talking about legalizing marijuana, so smoking and driving, that’s going to be a problem,” Hoback said. “How is he going to deal with that?”

Hoback also complemented his competition.

“I complement them for running high-class campaigns and they’re all great individuals, but unfortunately, there can only be one winner.”

The New Democrats had a bigger, less subdued post-election party than the Conservatives at the Prince Albert Union Centre. While supporters were dismayed

by the election result, they still celebrated.

“The good news for me – for us – is we have a change in administration in Ottawa,” Borgerson said.

“It’s not the change that we wanted, of course, but I’ve had huge concerns about what the Harper Conservatives have done to this country.”

Borgerson told the crowd the New Democrats would be there to keep the Liberals honest and would still fight for universal childcare, pharmacare and an environmental plan.

He said people in Tisdale, Melfort and Nipawin were hospitable at the door.

“I found a mix of responses. I found some people were very quiet about their politics. I found quite a lot of support and a desire for change, and, of course, I found some support for continuing on with the Harper government,” he said.

Borgerson also complemented the other campaigns, saying that while they were mischievous at times, they played fair.

As for the future, the NDP candidate sees hope in the youth that joined his campaign.

“I see them carrying on with this political activity and I’m hoping that someone among them will be the candidate next time. I will be there to help them on their campaign,” he said. “I enjoy that kind of role as a teacher and I enjoy that kind of role as a politician.”

Tenor to sing about fulfilling his dream A highly acclaimed tenor that has performed on many world stages, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, is coming to Tisdale.

Ken Lavigne will be at a concert put on by the Tisdale Arts Council at the Tisdale RECplex’s Maurice Taylor Performing Arts Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6.

The Victoria, B.C.-based tenor, backed by his band, will take the audience on a riveting and enchanting journey that retells his personal campaign to fulfil his dreams to sing at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra through songs and stories.

In order to put on his self-produced concert at the hall, he had to submit audition tapes before he could rent the space. He also had to hire the New York Pops Orchestra, as well as pay for lighting and set design, a production manager and marketing. The whole endeavour cost $250,000, paid through fundraising and a bank loan.

Now he’s raising money to cross another dream off of his bucket list: singing at the Sydney Opera House. The requirements aren’t as stringent as Carnegie Hall. He’s aiming for his debut there in 2016.

A review by Cabaret Exchange (New York) complimented Lavigne’s skills.

“His voice seemed to be liquid gold, a pure lyric sound that had surprising undertones in his unforced lower range,” it said. “While it was always excellent, there were times when the focus was so precise as to soothe and excite at the same time.”

Hawks player off to strong start Robin Wark Staff Writer

Nipawin Hawks sniper Kris Spriggs is off to a strong start.

The 5-foot-11, 186-pound forward from Edmonton has 11 goals and 16 points in 11 games. Spriggs was ranked fourth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in scoring as of Oct. 18. He started out the season by scoring at least one goal in the first five games of the season. As of late, the assistant captain has been setting up his teammates.

Spriggs has five assists in October.

“What makes Kris such a special player is his skill set,” Doug Johnson, Nipawin’s head coach, wrote in an email interview. “He has an incredibly quick release on his shot and has a very hard and accurate snap shot. This summer he also worked very hard in the gym to make himself a much stronger and more explosive skater.”

Spriggs’ production has helped the Hawks post a 9-1-1-0 record to start the season. As of Oct. 17, Nipawin sat in second on the Sherwood Division, just one point behind Melfort, as of Oct. 18. The Hawks had the league’s best winning percentage at .864.

In a scheduling quirk, the Hawks did not play last week. They were to host Weyburn on Oct. 20. On the weekend, the Hawks play at Battlefords on Oct. 23 and Kindersley the next day.

After posting 22 points as rookie, Spriggs more than doubled that total with 56 last season. He continues to work to improve his game.

“What has impressed me most about Kris is his drive to get better and the work he does to accom-

plish this,” Johnson wrote.

“Daily he is working on his game during our free ice before and after practice and that doesn’t account for all the hours he spends in the gym away from the rink.

“Also he is a truly great citizen. He volunteers for everything we do and shows up with a smile on his face that is infectious.”

Melfort Mustangs

The Melfort Mustangs went 1-1 last week. In spite of sustaining their first regulation loss, the Mustangs lead the Sherwood Division with a 9-1-1-1 record.

The ’Stangs and Battlefords top the league with 20 points.

Oct. 16, the Melfort Mustangs suffered their first regulation loss of the season. They were the last SJHL squad to lose a game in regulation. Estevan knocked off Melfort, 7-3.

The teams were knotted at 1-1 in Estevan after the first period. However, the hometown Bruins scored

three goals in both the second and third periods.

Tristan Frei, Justin Boyer and Kalem Zary scored for Melfort. Richard Palmer started and stopped 12 of the 16 shots he faced. Evan Plotnik came in and made six saves on seven shots.

Darcy DeRoose and Lynnden Pastachak each scored twice for Estevan.

Also scoring for the Bruins were Braden Oleksyn, Levi Barnstable and Keaton Longpre. Nathan Alalouf made 20 saves for Estevan.

The Mustangs got back

on the winning track with a 3-1 victory over Weyburn on the road on Oct. 17. Both teams scored in the first period, but the Mustangs shut their opponent out the rest of the way and picked up a goal in each period. Kalem Zary, Curran Reeve and Miles Warkentine scored for the Mustangs. Plotnik made 32 saves to pick up his first win of the season.

Jacob Wozney had Weyburn’s goal. Jack Burgart had 41 saves.

Melfort hosts Humboldt on Oct. 23 and Weyburn on Oct. 24.

Winter activities in Saskatchewan’s Outback

There’s plenty to do in winter in Saskatchewan’s Outback. “Carrot River has a lot to offer as far as recreational activities go, be it physical or more on the cultural end,� said Miranda Blaber, Carrot River’s recreation director.

Many of the town’s facilities are located on 3rd Avenue. At the centre of this strip is the Carrot River Arena, which hosts the town’s Prairie Junior Hockey League team, the Tri-Town Thunder, as well as minor hockey. “There’s hockey games that are always happening throughout the week people can come and watch,�

Blaber said.

It’s not just hockey that people can get involved in. There’s also public skating held on Thursday and Sunday afternoons as well as Saturday evenings, shinny games each Monday around noon and a parent-tot skate on Mondays after shinny.

There will also be a minor hockey auction held Nov. 7. “It’s a live radio auction and people can come watch hockey and bid on items,� Blaber said.

Next door to the arena, to the west, is the curling rink, which hosts ladies, men, farmer and senior bonspiels each year. It also administers the Little Rockers to help children learn about the sport.

Elsewhere in the community, there are fitness classes aimed at older adults at Pioneer Place Mondays and Thursday mornings.

Keeping Ƃt in the winter is important to Carrot River, thanks to the Tri-Unity challenge. Each year, Carrot River, ArborƂeld and Zenon Park challenge each other to see which town’s residents are the most physically active, measured on a per capita basis. In 2015, Zenon Park won.

On the cultural side, the town hosts a Christmas on Main event each year at the end of November. “There’s a hotdog roast and bonĆ‚re put on by the 4H, there’s late night shopping that evening and we usually try to have something happening for the kids,â€? Blaber said.

There’s also a 1920s-theme casino night held about the week before.

For artists, there’s a Vino and Van Gough Thursday hosted by Terri Freeborn where people create a work of art over an evening, as well as art lessons run by Evelyn Letendre at the Birch Road Gallery.

Blaber encourages those looking for activities – young or old – to come and chat with her.

For Ferguson’s first time, she is excited for this 1,400 km opportunity. “People don’t really receive that the right way when I tell them I’m excited for the snow to come.�

Along with the 10 women riding along the snowy trails, the team

also has a pit crew that comes along and does everything from carrying gear to maintaining the machines during nightly stops.

Prairie Women also have an 11th member in case someone falls sick or their machine breaks down.

One of the aspects of the trail that also excites Ferguson, besides being a part of this team, is meeting all the different people in small towns along the trail, some who may even be battling cancer. This is what will keep Ferguson going on the trail. “Really when it comes down to volunteering, it seems to be what’s in my spirit. It’s not a good pain proposition to do these things as a second job but it really what drives my soul to keep going.�

Ferguson said the support she’s received from her hometown of Naicam says a lot about small town life. “It just goes to show how the whole community can get behind you...It’s events like this and programs like this that really help to strengthen (your community).�

Plenty for the family in Melfort for winter

Melfort has a series of familyoriented activities to enjoy over the fall and winter.

Like many communities, the center of Melfort’s winter life is the rink. The Northern Lights Palace contains a hockey arena and a wave pool.

The arena hosts games of the city’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team: the Melfort Mustangs; minor hockey, which features teams from initiation to midget; the Ƃgure skating club; and the Melfort Ducks recreational hockey team.

The wave pool has swimming lessons, lane swimming and aqua Ƃtness.

The Kerry Vickar Centre hosts a number of sports and cultural events.

“We have a recreational volleyball league, they run Sunday evenings and it’s kind of whoever wants to come, comes,” said Kathy Gray, the centre’s program coordinator.

There’s also noon hour basketball, men’s basketball on Monday evenings, two different gymnastic groups and soccer.

The Centre also accommodates performances hosted by the Melfort and District Arts Council.

For those that want to put on the skis, there are two options around 30 minutes north of Melfort. For

Humboldt heats up for the cold

Winter may seem a bit more limiting than summer, when there’s no swimming or trips to the cabin. But in Humboldt, there are still a variety of things to do when it gets cold and the snow starts falling.

For the kids, rec hockey starts Oct. 18. There are two age groups: Ƃve to nine and 10-13. It runs until March 27 and takes place at the Uniplex every Sunday.

For the adults, drop-in sports are starting up. It’s $4 at the door for people 16 and older. Drop-in sports also works with a leisure pass or

punch card. The sports offered are: • Volleyball on Thursday nights from 8-10 p.m. at Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) • Floor hockey on Wednesday nights from 8-10 p.m. at Humboldt Public School (HPS) • Pickle ball/badminton on Sunday nights from 7-9 p.m. at HCI • Basketball on Mondays at HCI from 8-10 p.m.

“I think people should come out to spend some time with themselves,” said Michelle Stevenson, recreation coordinator with the city of

Humboldt. “I think a lot of times parents – and that’s the demographic we aim (drop-in sports) towards – kind of focus on what their kids are up to and getting their kids back and forth to their activities, and it’s an opportunity to get them out and participating in a activity and maybe something they enjoy doing.”

The city runs shinny and public skating but both are only booked as ice time becomes available so anyone interested has to watch the schedule online. There is also an outdoor rink at St. Dominic

School that will be up and running as weather permits, which is usually at the end of November. There’s no programming at the outdoor rink but it is open to the public as long as the lights are on.

The Humboldt Aquatic Centre is also open all winter except for three weeks in January for maintenance. The Uniplex also has a “walking program,” though it’s not regimented – anyone who wants to is welcome to walk to the upper deck of the Elgar Peterson Arena whenever the Uniplex is open. Along the

same line, there’s an in motion program that is not run by the city but runs at the Uniplex on Mondays and the Community Gathering Place on Wednesdays and is designed for people over 55 to get out and get active.

“There are still quite a few things to do, even though it may be cold outside,” Stevenson said. “We try to offer the drop-in sports program for adults, the pool’s open for all ages, the Ƃtness room is here. Even when the weather gets cold, there’s somewhere to escape to.”

Stay safe on the snowmobile

The weather gets colder and that’s the time when people’s thoughts turn to winter activities.

And seeing as how the region is rural, that means snowmobiles. But while ripping through the snow is exhilarating, it’s important to remember how to stay safe.

First, it’s important to make sure someone knows where you are. Chris Brewer, president of the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association, recommends leaving a note with where you’re going, what time you left, and roughly what time you’ll be back.

It’s also important to bring everything you’ll need, which includes good and dry snowmobile clothing, extra mitts, an extra touque, a cell phone, and of course, a helmet.

“Helmet’s automatic,” he said. “Always wear a helmet and do it up.”

He also said to ride with another person on a separate snowmobile to help in case of trouble.

When you’re out on the snow, know your surroundings and know where you’re going.

“Something can come up so quick and it’s hidden under the snow and that can cause lots of issues,” Brewer said.

One of the best ways to stay safe is to slow down.

Brewer said it’s easy to override your headlights, so

make sure you know what’s in front of you.

Always make sure your snowmobile is in good condition. Some things to check are the belt, the track, ski rods, brake pads, and spark plug. If you don’t know how to do all that, take it in to the dealer to get serviced.

The minimum age to drive a snowmobile is 12 years old. Brewer said younger children may need to be reminded about rules more but in general, he Ƃnds that adults tend to take safety regulations for granted that they know everything there is to know, and may not actually remember everything. Statistically, most accidents occur with young men between the ages of 16-28.

“That’s generally the group that has a little more aggressive style of riding,” he said. “After that age, I guess we start to slow down. We’ve learned a little from our mistakes, maybe.”

Everyone born after Jan. 1, 1989, must take the snowmobile safety course. There are classroom courses (with varying availability) and an online version that is available all the time. The classroom course varies in price while the online version is $45.

“No one can say ever that they can’t continue to learn,” he said. “Lots of people think the snowmobile safety course is for kids and it’s not. It’s for

everyone.”

Brewer said the two biggest factors for snowmobiling accidents is alcohol and speed. Brewer said that the two factors taken together can be a “recipe for disaster.”

“I think riders take for granted that they know the machine, they know the area, they can handle the speed. Speed’s probably the biggest thing now,” he said. “They go through the snow a lot better than they used to and they go over the snow a lot better than they did before, and that allows greater speed.”

As for alcohol, Brewer said just don’t do it.

“One thing we know, statistics don’t lie,” he said.

“The life that you save may be your own.”

Vintage snowmobile racing a family affair

Buy a $100 sled that runs and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be on the track and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have fun,â&#x20AC;? said Al. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the top end, if you want to go in some of the unlimited modiĆ&#x201A;ed classes where you got exotic stuff or engines built by professional engine builders in the States, pretty soon [itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s] $10,000.â&#x20AC;?

Al added ice oval sleds are a bit more expensive since you have to stud the tracks and put the carbide on them.

Going to the races After the sled is fixed up then you have to practice for the race. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have our own track to practice on to dial the sleds in, to get them running up to their potential,â&#x20AC;? said Al, adding he lets friends come and dial their sleds in too.

After things are running smooth, Al said theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll take a day to load the trailer.

They have a checklist that includes heaters, gear, helmets, safety vests and much more. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every weekend you race and during the week you prep, all winter. So itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s busy,â&#x20AC;? said Al. Once theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re packed, then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s off to the races. The Pinkneys do both vintage drag races, which are on snow, and ice oval races, which are on ice. For the drags, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll load up Ć&#x201A;ve sleds for Al and Grace to race. As for oval, Al just races the one sled so far, but Grace said things may change. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pressure to get some of the gals out on the track and I think thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a couple that are willing to give it a whirl and then weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see where that goes,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Once the Pinkneys get to the racing venue, Al said he looks for the best spot, which can sometimes be a challenge as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re one of 50 people looking for the best spot. Then they get the sleds unloaded and started up, which can be difĆ&#x201A;cult because of the cold and other factors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is not new technology, this is old guys that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run good the day they came from the factory, let alone 40 years later,â&#x20AC;? said Al. Next theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll go and register for the applicable classes, which usually cost

$5 per sled per class for drags and $10 per sled per class for oval. They also have to pay for insurance. The classes are based on the sled versus the driver, but there is a youth class in the oval racing and a powder puff class in the drags for the women. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Its vintage drags based on what the rules would have been and the classes would have been in the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;70s and so thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just carried through. Then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the technical inspection to make sure the snowmobiles are safe to race. Next is grab a bit to eat and then theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re off. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When the racing starts you are going all day long right to four, Ć&#x201A;ve, six oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;clock,â&#x20AC;? said Al. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really busy, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really an adrenaline rush.â&#x20AC;?

Al said for drags youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re guaranteed two heats per class and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re usually in about 12 which means 24 races and up to 40 in the day if they advance. The track is 660 feet (201 metres) for drag racing and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three times around an approximately 1,980 foot (604 metres) track for oval.

At the end of the day, there is a meal and prizes. For drag racing you most likely wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t receive prize money, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You come home with a little piece of plastic trophy, which is, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the pride thing hey. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need any more trophies but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always nice to walk off with a few,â&#x20AC;? said Al. For oval, they pay back the entry fee in cash to the Ć&#x201A;rst, second and third place racer and they get a trophy.

last year out of about 50 guys. Not bad for an old guy but I went to every race and my sled was in every heat that it could be,â&#x20AC;? said Al. Racing brotherhood Al and Grace both said a really nice part about being involved in the vintage snowmobiling community is the

camaraderie and sense of community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a really cold day and you got to pull and pull and pull on your sled to get it started, somebody else will soon come tap you on the shoulder and take over,â&#x20AC;? said Grace. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even though we compete against each other, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge brotherhood in the pits and everybody is looking after or borrowing parts,â&#x20AC;? said Al. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because really the win is getting the sled to run,â&#x20AC;? added Grace. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The more sleds that are on the race track the more fun it is for everybody, getting them all out there is pretty cool.â&#x20AC;?

For the upcoming 2016 season, Al said there are 15 races planned so far between races, show and shines and vintage rides. This keeps the Pinkneys very busy throughout the winter, but they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For a lot of people who do this it would be a long boring winter if it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for vintage snowmobiles. Guys are talking it up all year long like itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real passionate collective sport,â&#x20AC;? said Al. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lucky we live in a place where the seasons are so deĆ&#x201A;ned and so this is one way to enjoy winter when it can be pretty miserable sometimes. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice to enjoy all the season and this is one way to enjoy ours,â&#x20AC;? added Grace.

While skiing and snowboarding may dominate the outdoor winter sports landscape,

there are plenty of off-the-radar outdoor sports that are growing in popularity among people looking for something a little different.

Snowkiting Much like snowboarding appeals to surfers a n d s k a t e b o a rd e r s , snowkiting has found a fan base among people who enjoy kiteboarding when the weather is warm. Snowkiters use

Skijoring may be a less accessible winter sport, as it involves people on skis being pulled by a dog, horse or vehicle. The sport originated centuries ago in Scandinavia as a way for military members to speed up the process of sharing messages. Skijoring with dogs typically involves men or women being pulled by one to three dogs, each of which is wearing a sled dog harness (men and women wear skijoring harnesses). Dogs are not controlled by reins, but rather must be motivated to keep moving by their own desire to run. A single horse is typically enough for equestrian skijoring, and horses are typically guided by a rider. Small motorized vehicles, such as snowmobiles, are typically used in motorized skijoring.

Athletes need not sequester themselves indoors when temperatures dip below freezing. In fact, there are several lesser known outdoor sports athletes can enjoy this winter.

Winter activities have begun in Nipawin

The weather is beginning to cool off as fall turns into winter, but the Town of Nipawin has already begun its winter activities.

“Most things have started now for the year,” said Chelsea Dalziel, Nipawin’s recreation director.

The adult volleyball league that plays on Thursday nights began the week of Oct. 11, the badminton club will be starting its Sunday night events, and curling and soccer will also begin sometime in October.

At the Centennial Arena, the Nipawin Hawks, the town’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team, play. There’s also minor hockey, skating and speed skating.

“We have a free public skate at the rink too, which we have all yearround now and that’s sponsored by our local business community,” Dalziel said.

Skating can also be done outside.

“We have our two outdoor skating rinks: East Pleasantview and Pinedale rinks. East Pleasantview has been upgraded quite a bit the last couple years, so it’s got a newish look,” Dalziel said.

The curling club at the Evergreen Centre hosts Ladies’, Mens’, Mixed, Senior and Junior leagues.

Nipawin council is looking to get ahead of the game by saving money now for a future nursing home in Nipawin.

David Trann, Nipawin’s mayor, said although a nursing home is not on the books for Kelsey Trail Health Region yet, it will be soon.

“We know that in the future that it will have to be replaced and it’s our responsibility to take care of 20 per cent of the cost of that building. So 20 per cent of a huge number, we have to have some money put away,” said Trann.

Since the two clinics in Nipawin moved under one roof there is now less money being used from the clinic subsidy program. Since Nipawin and other towns and municipalities are putting money into that program already, the plan is to take the money not being used to run the clinic and put it into a fund for construction of a future nursing home.

“It’s great for the community, but we just don’t have all the infrastructure in place to do it,” he said.

Mechanics walked around the Murray Dunn GM garage with large stickers of bras on their chest as they gave tips on basic vehicle repair and maintenance to Nipawin women.

The car clinic, held Oct. 15, also had another purpose: to increase awareness about breast cancer.

“It’s a night out for the ladies,” said Lyall Cook, Murray Dunn GM’s general manager. “Treat them a little bit, let them ask some questions and just see some basic things and hopefully they learn something that they never have to use.”

Mechanics showed the women how to change a tire, charge a battery, showed them what happens when they check for alignment and showed some of the parts behind the tires.

“Ladies seem to really like it,” Cook said. “They’ll see some basic things that they didn’t really know: changing a tire, boosting a car – [both] pretty common

occurrences in our part of the world.”

This is the first time Cook has held such an event within the Northeast.

“I’ve done two of them prior to this in other dealerships. I don’t know if there’s been one in the Northeast before, but I’m sure there has at some point,” he said.

After the clinic, the women could munch on some hors-d’oeuvres and visit with each other.

Cook said he thought it was important for the dealership to bring awareness about breast cancer.

“We’ve had lots of different groups do things for the cause and we just thought it was our turn to do it this year, so $10 from every road test,” he said, “will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.”

Cook was also pleased with the turnout of approximately 30 women.

“In the old days we’d have eight people, but we didn’t have Internet, we didn’t have Facebook, we didn’t really have email the last time I did it,” he said. “We’ve been able to capture a few more people and it’ll be a fun night.”

A beautification project in Melfort is half-funded

by CN Rail thanks to a grant from their EcoConnexions program.

The $25,000 grant for the Shadd Drive Beautification Project is one of 35 in the country and two in Saskatchewan. There were 159 applications for the grant.

“It’s a great benefit to our community to receive a grant like this so that we can beautify and enhance certain areas,” said Rick Lang, Melfort’s mayor.

The project, which will cost around $50,000, is the second one to receive a CN grant. The first one is located further north along Shadd Drive.

“You’ll be able to see a variety of different trees that have been planted that will blossom with vibrant colours that will be attractive for anyone who’s running, walking, driving, what have you, up and down Shadd Drive,” said Teri Scaife, the city’s community services director.

Kevin Phillips, the MLA for Melfort, said the benefits of the project will be seen in the future.

“Actually the celebration should be in 10 years.

It should be in 15 years, 20 years when we see what we are really doing here today and see the results,” he said.

The beautification project caused a stir earlier in the year among nearby residents.

“There were quite a few neighbour concerns but I and my team worked with them to co-ordinate a different strategy to ensure that their needs were met as well as the city’s,” Scaife said.

The plan was to remove the trees and replace them, but the city thinned them out, trimmed them and made them fuller instead.

In Loving Memory of

Annie Josephine ANDERSON January 30, 1918 – September 27, 2015 Born January 30, 1918, the eldest daughter of Thomas and May Sherping at their farm home in Earlstone, AB. Passed from this life on September 27, 2015 at Newmarket Place in Tisdale, SK. In 1923, she moved with her parents and two younger sisters to Star City, SK settling on a farm in the Excelsior District south of Star City. Annie took her schooling at Excelsior School and helped her parents on the farm. In 1939, she married Helmer Anderson and moved to the farm in the South Star District where she lived until their move to Star City in 1978. To this union, two daughters and a son were born. She was a member of the South Star Community Club and made many lifelong friendships. The members were active in Red Cross work, knitting and sewing and donating to many charitable organizations. She then joined the Royal Purple Lodge in Star City and was an active member for over 50 years attaining a lifetime membership, holding many positions within the lodge including Honored Royal Lady. She loved the fellowship of all the members, working for the betterment of the community, and supporting the many goals of the lodge.

After the death of her beloved husband in 1991, she remained in Star City until 1996 at which time she moved to Heritage House in Tisdale. Failing health necessitated her move to Sasko Park Lodge in 2013 and later to Newmarket Place until her passing.

Staff there always commented on her wonderful personality and she always had a smile on her face.

Annie was the most loving and kind person we have known and the great memories of her will live in our hearts forever. She was someone whom we remember as being beautiful, inside and out. She was very devoted to her family, and the arrival of all her grandchildren brought great joy to her life. Her interests were doing crossword puzzles, reading, knitting, curling and bowling. She loved to see her family come home and always had fresh buns and cookies for the grandchildren.

Predeceased by her father Thomas Sherping (1974), mother May Sherping (1985), husband Helmer Anderson (1991); sister Ida Rolles (2008); father-in-law Andrew Anderson (1955), mother-inlaw Helena Anderson (1980); brothers-in-law Hans Anderson (1982), Hjalmar Anderson (1984), Nels Anderson (1986), Eric Anderson (1991), Elmer Rolles (1992), Lloyd Sorenson (2007); sisters-in-law Laila Anderson (1996), Muriel Anderson (2010); and granddaughter’s husband Tom Yantha (2014).

She is survived by: daughter Elaine (Wayne) Nicholson, granddaughters Michelle, Tania (Todd) {Maia}, grandson Mark {Mathew and Kyle}; daughter Deanna (Gord) Bailey, grandson Chad (Trenna) {Kaylee, Duncan, Morgan and Brody}; son Murray (Brenda) Anderson, granddaughter Lesley, grandson Michael (Michelle){Blake}, granddaughter Janelle (Aaron) {Kate} and her sister Lily Sorenson, and sister-in-law Helen Anderson, niece and nephews.

A family memorial service was held at South Star Bethel Lutheran Church on October 10, 2015.

Elroy Edward “Roy” BURNS Elroy Edward Burns “Roy” passed from this life on September 28, 2015, Tisdale, SK at the age of 94.

Elroy Edward Burns was born on July 2, 1921 in Penzance, SK to parents Bernard and Rose Burns. He was the third child in a family of ten children; six sisters: Everyl, Rose, Jeanette, Margaret, Helen and June and three brothers: Herman, Russell and Bob. The family moved to the New Osgoode area around 1924. Roy attended Goyer School; after his schooling he worked as a logger, and later began farming alongside his brother Russell.

Roy married Carol Johnson of Flin Flon, Manitoba in October 1963. Together they farmed in the Silver Stream and Crooked River district. Roy and Carol had three sons: Bernard, Edward and Keith. Roy lived for farming, raising cattle and other livestock and taking care of his family.

Roy was predeceased by his parents, sisters: Everyl, Jeanette, Rose, Margaret and June and his brothers Herman and Russell.

Left to cherish Roy’s memory is his loving wife Carol; sons: Bernard (Alice), Edward and Keith (Joy); grandchildren: Adele (Josh Dufault), Amanda, Shawn, Alexa, Hayley and Ronan Burns; sister Helen (Ned) Pearse; brother Bob Burns; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Celebration of life was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2015, from Barron’s Funeral Chapel, Tisdale, SK. Of¿ciating was Pastor Brian Friesen.

Organist was Audrey Dahlsjo.

Tribute was by Adele Burns and Joy Burns.

Register attendants were Donna Lykken and Carol Foster.

Casketbearers were: Calvin Wilkinson, Ernie Zielke, Rick Stoltz, Bernard Brett, Herb Hudak and Dave Pearse.

Interment followed in the New Osgoode Cemetery, New Osgoode, SK. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation as a token of remembrance.

Ida Judith “Judy” EKSTRAND 1944 - 2015 It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of beloved wife and mother Ida Judith Ekstrand, nee Haughton, on October 8, 2015.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon, of 48 years and daughters Heather (Sheldon) Baerg and Jennifer (Jeff) Serby, her sisters Mildred Malott, Pat (Clare) Phillips, brother-in-law Robert Thorn, sister-in-law Elvina (Ernie) Hirsch, brotherin-law Aldon (Maxine) Ekstrand and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her loving daughter Stacey Lee, parents Willard and Ann Haughton, brother Robert Haughton, sister Shirley Thorn, brother-in-law Don Malott as well as nephew Morgan Phillips and in-laws Emil and Carrie Ekstrand.

Judy was born August 19, 1944 at Arbor¿eld, SK, then moved to Sutherland where she completed high school and graduate nursing.

After Gordon and Judy were married they have lived in Morden, MB, Sutherland, Brooksby, Melfort, North Battleford, Dalmeny and back to Saskatoon for the past 18 years.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to MD Ambulance and RUH staff for their caring and support.

Memorial service was held Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Ave. N. Interment will follow at a later date.

Although the TriTown Thunder have been a bit shorthanded to start this Prairie Junior Hockey League season, their head coach has been impressed with their attitude.

“Just our commitment to the work ethic. ...The guys have went out and worked hard. As a result we are playing .500 hockey right now,” said Randy Cuthill, the Thunder’s head coach.

Last week the Thunder went 1-1 and were 2-2 through the season’s first two weeks. Their losses have come to the PJHL’s top two teams – the Saskatoon Quakers and the Regina Capitals. As of Oct. 17, the Thunder sat sixth in the North Division but were just one point out of fifth place and two away from third.

Tri-Town has been shorthanded due to farming and work commitments. With players missing, others have stepped up.

“It shows character – how they respond to playing under adversity,” said Cuthill, who noted that in the face of fatigue players have simplified their games.

Last Week

The Thunder exploded for five goals in the third period to get by Fort Knox for a 6-5 victory on Oct. 17 in Carrot River. Fort Knox led 2-1 and 3-1 at the intermissions.

In the third period, the Thunder scored in pretty much every way possible. They had three even strength goals, scored on the power play, and even had a shorthanded marker. Cuthill said it started with a strong shift at the end of the second period where the Thunder had Fort Knox hemmed in their own end. The team was unable to score, but it seemed to change the momentum.

“We were just all over them. ...The more we scored, the more pumped up we got,” Cuthill said.

Brennan Carson had two goals for TriTown. Also scoring for the Thunder were Nick Peterson, Rick Mack, Tyrell Pompu, and Zach Garrett. Mack and Stephen Turner each had three points. Kolton Holmen made 37 saves for Tri-Town.

Catching Up With Doepker

Ryley Doepker (2009-13) lives with his girlfriend in Martensville and is a carpenter in Saskatoon. He enjoyed his four seasons with the Thunder. The best part?

“Getting to go to the rink every day with all

your buddies. The whole organization and three towns were nothing but great in the time I played there.”

In Doepker’s rookie season, 2009-10, the Thunder won the PJHL championship.

They made it all the way to the finals of the Keystone Cup, Canada’s national Junior B championship.

“That whole year was something to remember only losing three games during the regular season,” Doepker wrote in an Internet interview.

Doepker capped his career with the Thunder by captaining the team.
