March 30, 2017 During the FFA assembly, the chapter allowed students to nominate a teacher to kiss a farm animal. World languages teacher Daniel McGrath received the most donations. “I am a germophobe,” McGrath told his class before the assembly. McGrath left the gym with just a few more germs on his face than he would have liked.

The fundraiser brought in upwards of $60 for FFA.

Peace Tea, a popular beverage at Park High School At Park High, lunch and breakfast are an important part of every student’s day.

IN MY OPINION Peace Tea is a fan favorite soft drink sold here at Park is a fast seller when it comes to lunch. With opportunities for students to buy them in the morning and at lunch, over 60 Peace Teas a day are sold SHEA to all ages in the school.

BERGSING Peace Tea is a drink sold and distributed by Monster Energy Drink Company, Owned by Coca-Cola. Created in 2009, with intention to inform the world about self reliance and peaceful relations.

The designs for peace Tea were created by Steve Jugan and artist John Malloy, “ The designs were in homage of the different peace movements throughout history.” Malloy stated.

With a stunning 150 calories per can and 39 grams of sugar Peace Teas aren’t really in the running for health-

iest drink out there. So why is the Peace Tea business such a big hit here at park high? They were first introduced here at Park High three years ago as the last few years Carla Jones and the ala cart were not able to sell them due to state guidelines. “The kids get more for their money, and are encouraged to eat lunch.” stated Jones the head of ala cart.

With new federal guidelines as to how drinks should be sold at Park High and other schools around the country allow no more than 12 ounces at per bottle are designated to be served at a time, Peace Tea is over that at a much larger 32 ounces, “But i wouldn’t sell it to my kids unless I knew it was what is best for them.” Said Carla boastfully.

Peace Tea is at the top of the pecking order when it comes to drinks here at Park because of its great flavor and genourus quanities. “I drink them all the time, during breakfast or lunch.” said junior Jalen Smith. With opportunities for students to buy them in the morning and at lunch, over 60 Peace Teas a day are sold to all ages in the school.

An unforeseen issue with President Trump’s wall on migration IN MY OPINION

DANA BASKETT The big topic of 2017 has been Donald Trump, and I’m sorry to say this article is the same, but from an often overlooked point of view. The animals that migrate across the US-Mexican border each year.

Migration over the US and Canadian border functions just fine because there is no fencingm, just a large stip of deforestation, however, where fencing exists on our Mexican boundary animals can’t cross over, and this is a huge issue that not many people pay attention to.

According to The Outside “US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that the project will “potentially impact” 111 endangered species, 108 species of migratory bird, four wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries” If you can’t tell that’s a lot of species.

This list of endangered species is a long and sad one. Outside magazine stated that “The Trump wall would undoubtedly spell the end of jaguars in the U.S. The very last jaguar thought to call the U.S. home is “El Jefe,” Also on the list provided by USFWS that would be effected the

The construction of this wall would disturb many animals’ habitats, and as it continued to stand it would change migration patterns. In Montana it is known that you can’t control animal species roaming areas. The wolves in Yellowstone National Park are our first hand experience. Animals don’t conform to human boundaries.

However think about maintenance, security, and transport, and suddenly the price comes to the inexpensive price of 25 billion according to a study by the Washington Post, and of course do not forget the price of the animals.

Love in World War II, South Pacific CASSIE SHEPARDSON Geyser Staff Writer Many people don’t know how much work goes on behind the scenes. But before any play you must go through the audition process. First you warm up, but not just your body, your voice too! After vocal warmups then a little stretching and you get the piece of music that the director has picked. It usually is a song that fits all ranges. Then you run the song till you almost have it memorized, singing over and over again till someone is brave enough to sing it as a solo first. Once you are ready, you take a deep breath and show your talent.

Before I sing my heart is always pounding, and my hands are shaking, almost to the paint of not wanting to go. Then one of your theatre buddies says, “I’ll first go if you go right after me.” After you go you feel really relieved.

Then you go sit in the audience and listen to everyone else show their talent.

Once that is done there is usually another song that you do as a duet or some of the lines from the actual script. This shows the director how well you work with different people and how well you can act. This year they just did the duet. Then the director says when callbacks will be. They usually are the Wednesday following the additions. Personally I’ve never gotten a call back so I’m not positive what happens there.

Jackman makes final appearance as Wolverine PAULO CURRIE Geyser Staff Writer In the last 20 years, there have been over seven X-Men movies released, met with mixed reviews.Now the highly anticipated eighth installment, “Logan” has been met with high expectations.

Following Logan into his old age as he protects another mutant, a girl, and one of the last mutants. The movie is quick and fast paced, the story beginning with the back of a luxury limo zoomed in upon old man Logan’s face. The movie quickly throws you into a fast-paced fight between Logan and some car jackers.

Violent and bloody the fight ends quickly but we witness the progression of age that has been taking its toll on Logan.

The story takes you through his travels to protect the mutant girl from Mexico up to the Northern United States From that point on the movie progresses quickly into the plot of the story, and we are introduced to many new and old

faces from previous X-men movies as well as filling in some major plot gaps, (70 fictional years worth,) between the last X-men movie and “Logan”.

It was great, fast-paced action and grade A violence permeated the entire movie, aptly proving that it was definitely worthy of being rated R. Of all the action flicks I have seen, this movie rises to the top for its quality and for staying close to the comic story of Old Man Logan. Although the plot itself was good the only thing about the movie that I was dissatisfied with was how quickly the story ended, leaving us at another mutant-induced cliff hanger.

What will happen to the girl after the ending is unknown to us and if there is a plan for her in the future as a new hero we will have to see. I would give this movie a 9/10 for its story and its excessive violence. Also, for all of you Deadpool fans out there, pay close attention to the previews before “Logan” to catch a glimpse of your favorite anti-hero.

Concerts, coming to a town near you Look out for DANA BASKETT Geyser Staff Writer

Recently, Montana has been hit with a flurry of concerts. These have ranged from mainstream artists like 21 Pilots to more classic musicians like Elton John and Journey. This is a bit strange, but does not go under appreciated.

Bands do come through Montana, but usually don’t stop. The trend however seems to be that tours will stop on their way to bigger venues like Seattle or even Denver, and this is great, except it often falls on school nights.

Students like sophomore Lily DeYoung will take the day as a personal day, or others just don’t show up to school the next day. Montana fans are dedicated and often know that when their band comes through they should make the time to go see it. At the 21 Pilots concert, all the tickets were sold out, and so teenagers who were scheduled to work struggled to find someone to cover so they wouldn’t have to.

This bombardment of shows doesn’t seem like it will let up soon with artist like Nickelback in Billings in August, and Bastille on April 30, in Bozeman. These fans will have to be very dedicated to drive the distance of anywhere from 20 to 200 miles to see these larger events.

April 14-15 is the 42nd annual American Indian council Pow Wow with host drum this year by the Northern Cree. This event is free and open to the public. Doors are open on the 14 at 6p.m. and 15 at 12p.m. and 6p.m.

Student shows true passion through her art projects AUSTIN CLEMENTS Geyser Staff Writer

Rayleena Cruz focuses hard on the small details of her latest pottery piece. The project shown here will be made into a ceramic wind chime.

Art student, Rayleena Cruz, is by far the most dedicated to all her amazing projects. She enjoys throwing clay on a pottery wheel and painting on canvas. Cruz spends most of her day at school taking art classes in the art wing.

Cruz is a senior at Park High school and four of her seven classes are with pottery teacher, RaeAnn Nilan, or drawing teacher Lois Huntzicker. She is a Teacher’s Aid third period for Mrs. Nilan, takes painting with Mrs. Huntzicker 5th period, then spends 6th and 7th period working on her ceramics.

Her 6th and 7th periods are independent study classes for pottery because she has taken all the pottery classes available at Park High.

“I created my own project list I need to complete by the end of the year; I take pictures with all my projects and have to

show them to Mrs. Scalia at the end of the year in a slideshow,” Cruz said. Cruz really enjoys to make a wide variety of things, like plant pots, jewelry and plain old fashioned plates, cups, and bowls.

Cruz started taking pottery the beginning of her junior year and fell in love with it. Cruz says, “last year I was going through hard times and art just made me feel really happy. It helps me when I’m stressed out and it clears my mind.”

Art is a great subject that can help many people, and is almost like a type of therapy. It’s a wonderful subject that Park High school has to offer.

Cruz would like to go to college for art but isn’t sure if that is what she wants for a career. “I love art but don’t want to get bored of it, it’s a subject I love and wouldn’t want to get tired of,” she said.

Spreading good, one lock at a time MCKENZIE YARNELL Geyser Staff Writter

With March now behind us, people are starting to cut their hair for summer. With people donating hair, it gives sick patients a chance to have hair and feel like they are thought about. Wigs for Kids is a company who will take 12 inches of hair and make it into a wig. Once your hair is in a wig, they will give it to a child with an illness for free.

Donating hair is very rewarding and can boost people`s confidence. It gives a child with cancer a chance to have hair and give them some hope. It lets them know that people are willing to help and give away their hair, so they could have some.

From a personal experience, it means the world to actually meet someone who has your hair and see their smile. While I was at work, still with my long hair, I met a mother who told me that my hair is the same color and feel as her daughter’s hair, when she was in the hospital. I smiled and felt so happy that I could help someone.

About an hour later, the mother came back with a little girl with very short hair.

The little girl walked over to me and started to feel my hair. I was brought to tears when I heard her say, “Mom, this is my hair. This girl has my hair.” Right when she claimed this to her mother, I knew at that moment that this little girl had my hair when she was ill.

Just with meeting a little girl who used my hair because I donated it made it all worth it. I have have donated my hair four to five times already. At first my goal was to donate my hair five times, yet with that experience, I changed my goal. The little girl who had my hair was aroud the age of 10, just by guessing. When I met her, I decided to donate my hair when it becomes long enough 10 times.

When children lose their hair, it causes them to feel worse about themselves. Just with hair, it makes a person feel better about themselves and their self image. While helping someone else, the hair stylist you went to would get your e-mail so they can let you know who has your hair and where they are.

Some places will even cut your hair for free, just because you are donating it. Depending on the person and how fast their hair grows, they can donate more hair than others.

While donating hair, there are a few requirements you would have to follow. You must be able to donate ten or more inches, depending who you are donating to. Another requirement is that you cannot have dyed or bleached hair. It has to be natural because it

could hurt or mess up treatment for the child or adolosent who is undergoing treatment.

Donating hair helps the people in the hospital to grow more self esteem. While it seems like it is just hair to us, it means someone else gets a chance to look like them selves again. It changes the child’s life and how they look at themselves, reminding them that someone does care and wants to help.

The human body contains nearly two gallons of blood. As little as one pint of that blood could and does change many lives.

Volunteering to donate blood is an enormous help to the health of our community, and we are lucky enough to have good people out there that are willing to do that. Our school of Park High, in specific, is also very fortunate of our wonderful blood donors. Overall, our blood drives run by PHS’s Student Council have positive turnouts, for “we have always met our goal of 20 donors,” says Stu-

Rangers hit hard by germs MCKENZIE YARNELL Geyser Staff Writer Livingston has been taking a hard hit with many illnesses and viruses. Park High School is trying to keep these germs away with our Ranger Clinic and with our staff. We remind everyone to keep clean and wash our hands regularly.

Dr. Paula Coleman, Ranger clinic doctor, reported that one of the more prevalent illnesses in the high school is Influenza and the normal viruses. She also noted that strep throat is also being tested here at the high school as strep throat happens year around.

With the students being out of school, the attendance has suffered. Lori Dust, Vice principal, notified the school that many students are nearing their eight absent limit and a few are starting to lose credit.

First off, a common reason people and our students donate is to try something new, and at the same time, get over a fear. The thought of donating blood can sound scary to many, especially high school students.

“I donate because I am a universal donor and want to help reduce all of the deaths in Montana,” says junior Jessica Stewart, who has donated twice and plans to continue.

In addition, donating blood can take on a personal aspect to individuals. Many

believe it is a way to ‘give back’ and it is their duty to help others in need. Senior donor, Alexis Bowman, has donated twice and wants to continue for as long as she can because she “wants to help people who need blood and the body supplements blood itself so I donate for others who need it,” she said. For obvious reasons, after some one would donate their own blood, they would feel great about themselves.

Overall, student council is encouraging more and more people to donate, for this fall was the lowest turnout in re-

cent years with only 20 donors. By comparison, 110 donors participated in 2012.

“This is the first year where the drive isn’t during school hours because of the new schedule,” added Tennant. Not only students would donate more during the school day, but the staff would as well. Unfortunately, not nearly as many students are willing to donate out of school, considering we have most Fridays off now.

If anyone is interested in volunteering to donate blood, the next blood drive at Park High will take place on May 19.

In a smaller school, gender seems like a black and white topic. Typically, you are male or female. However, that’s not the case.

Standards for women have changed with the times

The standards that women are held to are very controversial with so many people having different views. There are a few standards that most everyone agrees with. There are others that certain men like or find attractive in women that those women may or may not agree with. The standards for women depend upon who is listing them. A mother will have different expectations for her daughter than a husband will, a brother will have different expectations for his sister than her best friend will.

The majority of people know of the traditional, dated expectations for women. The women are supposed to marry early, start a family, raise the children, cook the meals and stay out of business and politics. However, is that really the way it is today? Women are in much higher positions to-

Student teacher’s past inspires future career choice CAITLIN EYSTER Geyser Staff Writer Shelby Jackson is keeping her options open as she is majoring in English and minoring in two other subjects: history and consumer sciences. “We are lucky to have Ms. Jackson as a student teacher because she brings an energy and experience to class that many new teachers don’t have.”

Shelby Jackson is a student at MSU who is currently student teaching at Park High. Jackson has two older brothers, Steven and Brett. As a child, Jackson wanted to be an X-ray technician. She soon realized to do this there would be a lot of math and science involved and changed her mind.

In Jackson’s free time, she enjoys reading, writing, hiking, and running. “I am a nerd!” she says. Jackson enjoys video games

They push her to be the best that she can, and to be a leader.

In high school, events at home caused Jackson’s grades to suffer because she couldn’t focus in school. Her auto-shop teacher was a huge contributor in her decision to be a teacher, because he was there for her when she needed it. He offered Jackson his office so that she could get her grades up and focus better, and offered her a shoulder to cry on. This made her want to do the same thing as she teaches. She wants to change the lives of her students.

Being around Chase Chapman is all about the experience. That’s just one thing he prides his business around. The man we know as a substitute teacher provides just as much fun outside the school than he does in our classroom.

The Texas born and raised boy was always just an average student with an above average passion for the outdoors. After graduating from Liberty, Chapman furthered his education by receiving a degree in agriculture from Stephen F Austin University in Na-

cogdoches, Texas. Since moving to Montana in 2013, Chapman has been lucky enough to make a living off doing something he loves.

Fly fishing, a beautiful method using a special rod, reel, and lure to imitate bugs and catch trophy fish is a hobby that attracts people from all over the world to our area. From a young age, the fly fishing seed was planted within Chapman from his father who taught him proper skills and ethics of the outdoors.

His love for fly fishing has been able to provide himself a salary here in Montana. After 30 years of fly fishing experience, Chase earned his guide license from Ft. Smith, Montana.

His business, Chase’n’Trout, provides people with a unique, unforgettable experience that other fisherman might fail to offer.

Chase’s signature trip for his clients is wading in some of the world’s best fly fishing waters, our own Yellowstone National Park.

“Yellowstone gives fisherman breathtaking experiences from bear encounters to being chased by a badger that you can’t find anywhere else” Chapman said about his signature trip. Owning an independent business, Chapman is a “core guide” for George Anderson’s Yellowstone Angler here in Livingston. As a core guide, Chase is contracted

through Yellowstone Angler, but has his own guiding business. “I truly enjoy sharing the fantastic experiences and knowledge that the sport of fly fishing brings to newcomers lives, no better office in the world” Chapman said about his love for guiding.

As a sub, Chapman uses his time in classrooms to teach the importance of our Yellowstone River, and protect trout by keeping their habitats healthy. Chapman has been subbing for almost three years now and loves being in the school around all of us. He also likes to promote fishing and recruit and educate new anglers.

Substitutes are constantly coming in and out of our building. We see them everyday in the classrooms, the cafeteria, and the halls. Some we see more than others, some we see only once. Others seem to be here every day. With a limited amount of substitute teachers between all of the schools,

Park High has on average one to two a day, with some days having anywhere from five to six. Teachers are needed to fill in for other teachers about once a week in cases that the teacher had to leave unexpectedly.

During the cold and flu seasons, things become more difficult because the substitute numbers are limited.

Students at Park High join the work force LINDSAY LEE Geyser Staff There are many reasons why students have after school jobs. Whether the job is meant to support their future college expenses or their activities, jobs teach students how to manage their time. Having extracurricular activities, homework, and jobs for after school is a lot for a teenager to handle for one day, but they are handling the stress.

Students are working at almost every place a person can work. From Dairy Queen to a butcher shop, students are working to support their endeavors. Jobs can be beneficial to a student’s sense of responsibility, organization and important communication skills and ways to manipulate management tools needed for the future.

For other students, after school activities might be their jobs. Some students tutor, play sports, volunteer

and help around the community. Sports that are through the school or club sports take up a lot of time. The player needs to be at practice at a certain time and stay for two hours or more. The amount of time spent practicing could be spent doing homework; instead, the dedicated athletes are finding ways to balance their sports and their homework the same as someone with an after school job.

Senior at Park High, Alicia Watson, works at Matt’s Butcher Shop after school and makes her job as fun as she can make it. Alicia plays softball for Park High and is a dedicated student and athlete, but when she is not doing her homework or participating in extracurricular activities, she is working. She said, “I enjoy interacting with the customers that come into the shop. If I do anything to make their day better, it makes mine too.” The hardest part for Alicia is balancing work, school and sports, “Finding time to have a social life and to work is difficult.”

Dustin Jacobson, a senior at Park High says, “Holding a job while still attending school is not impossible.”

He works at Kenyon Noble before and after school, during the school week. Dustin strongly believes that if a student uses their evenings wisely, school work is not hard and is easy to complete. Jacobson has found the delicate balance between work and school in order to better himself and the people around him through what he has learned in the working force. “I believe working and going to school is an excellent way to learn how to manage time, and to keep priorities in order of importance,” Jacobson says.

Isaly gives learning a new meaning TSA heads to state comptition in Billings BRITTANY WOOD Geyser Staff Writer

Some students have a hard time learning from lectures or book work. Industrial Technology teacher and Technology Students of America (TSA) advisor, Jamie Isaly, has come up with a new idea called Project Based Learning. to help students become more hands on with their learning. He started this program to help students learn better. “I am a very big believer that students learn better when they are involved in projects,” said Isaly. He believes that projects help students understand what they are learning better by being hands on.

With this program, teachers get to take their classes to Isaly’s classroom to engage in a project that they come up with that they think will help them learn their material better.

English teacher, Natalie Storey, took part of this program with her class. They made shirt printouts. This was connected to a study they were doing of the novel FoolsCrow. These shirts were silkscreened Blackfeet pictographs on tee-shirts. Another english teacher, Sarah Dahl, took part of this as well to help her students do a project to go along with what they were learning about the Vietnam War. Math teacher, Erik Jorgenson, participated in project based learning with his pre-algebra class. They spent several weeks applying math and problem solving skills in order to create Blue Bird houses. “This took a lot of measuring and adding and mulitlying to create this bird house, but overall it think it was a good project,” said Freshman, Shania Johnson.

Isaly started this whole project as a part of the school’s redesign. Isaly explained, “this works on the students soft skills, such as teamwork, collaboration, and problem solving.” After the class is done with their projects, they have to do a presentation of some sort. They either have to present this to their parents, staff, or their fellow students. “This is so they feel more accountable for the project that they have completed,” he explained.

This is available to any teachers or classes that would like to take part. “The biggest issue we come across is scheduling. This takes a lot of time and effort for teachers and myself to plan out,” says Isaly. Isaly and school librarian, Kate Lende, are putting together a cart on wheels that teachers can check out for their classes. This will be a cart provided with tools, drills, glue guns, and more. It will be kept in the library and available to teachers who need it for their own project based learning in their classrooms.

Isaly hopes to continue this program for more years to come. He is not yet sure if he will be able to, but he is sure trying to make it happen. Isaly is not sure if the district will be able to continue to fund Project Based learning for more years to come. Isaly also has to figure out of if it is worth to continue this program and if it is worth paying for it. He hopes to continue this project for better learning opportunities and to help students succeed. Isaly is compensated for his time spent during one prep period each day. hopefully this will be a project that more classes will be able to take part of and possibly learn better from it

BRITTANY WOOD Geyser Staff Writer Technology Students of America (TSA), is a school based program part of the career and technical education student organization (CTSO). This is run by industrial technology teacher Jamie Isaly. “TSA is oriented around technology and problem solving,” said Isaly. TSA meets once or twice a week in order to get ready for the state competition which was held in Billings on March 28th and 29th.

The students participating in this event do projects based on technology and how to make something work. Some of the projects they will be competing in include technotalk, CO2 cars, bottle rockets, solar spring cars, problem solving, catapult, robotics, structure, and more. Robotics is a newer competition. Isaly said “This is only the third year that TSA is doing it. It is a harder competition, and you really need the ability to problem solve.” The students are judged on how well they were able to assemble their project or how well their trial went. whether this is how far it went, and/or how well it was built. State competition results were not available at press time.

“I think that state is going to go good. It will be interesting,” says Isaly. He explained, “Veterans have better success.”

This means that students that have done this in the past years have a better perspective on this competition and know what to expect better than students who have not done this before.

This year, five students are going to participate in state. Quite a few of the students taking part of TSA are freshman, which means they are new to the competition. There are a few veterans taking part again this year. In the past years, TSA has competed well. Some do well in only certain events, and some of the events are harder to engage in. By this, Isaly explained that some events were easier to get involved with than others.

Four new classes among next year’s course offerings JAKE HINTZ Geyser Staff Writer

Attention students! There are four new classes that will be offered during the 2017-2018 school year., many offering college credit before you’re even in college. They include an A.P. European History Class, a Teaching and Learning class, a Self Advocacy class, and a Pro-Start Certification Program.

The A.P. European History Class will be taught

by Joey Lane, who currently teaches Economics, Honors World History, and History of the World. It will be offered only to sophomores, who will learn about 1400 A.D. to the present, in European History. This course will fulfill the western civilization credit required for college.

Lane said, “I’m really excited. It’s going to be really interesting.” There currently is no A.P. History class offered. Several seniors have remarked that they wish that this class was offered this year, and that it was open to seniors, as they would definitely have taken it. Sophomores should definitely take advantage of this opportunity while they can.

In the Self Advocacy class, which will be taught by Sarah Mussetter and Megan Lannon, students will learn how to fill out a job application, scholarships, and how to build a resume. They will also learn cooking, how to create and stick to a budget, and skills for life outside of PHS. The students will be assisted in figuring out: What’s next after high school? Are you going to go to College? Are you going to jump straight into your career? Do you know what career you want to be in? Also, students will receive workplace training, and learn what employment opportunities are available. Mussetter said, “This class is a great one for people who don’t know what they want to do after high school.” It’s a class to try and prepare students for life after high school.

They have been around for multiple years now.

The first smartphone came out in 1999. Nowadays it’s more like having a computer in your back pocket. There are so many uses for the smartphone like, you don’t have to carry a camera around, you can look things up instantly, there’s thousands of games to play, social media is on them, you can text, call, email, and also work. The only problem with that is it consumes your life.

Before smartphones or cell phones, you would see families sitting around the table having sentimental conversations without any distractions. There would be millions of kids running around the neighborhood and being active, instead of sitting on their phones inside. Before cell phones or smartphones, neighbors would get out and have neighborhood barbecues. People would have actual interactions with other people. Rather than sitting on their phones and

talking through social media. While there is a balance for everything, I believe that people need to start limiting their time on their cell phones.

There are multiple ways to track your phone usage such as RealizD, Moment, and many more.

On average most people spend seven to eight hours on their phone. Some even more than that.

I spent some time tracking myself for a few days. I admit that I am on my phone most of the day. When I started tracking my usage, I realized just how much time I spend on this little box that fits in my hands. It was shocking to have it put into perspective. On average I spend 6.5 hours a day. That’s 6.5 hours that I’ll never get back. By the time you hit old age, how many years have you wasted on your phone? That’s time that you could have spent doing more productive things or even being truly social with those that matter to you. We are losing our humanity to these tiny computers Put down your phones and be present, for time is fleeting and no one knows how long they have, so don’t spend it all on a smartphone.

Ranger softball has high hopes for upcoming season DESTINY INGRAM Geyser Staff Writer The girls of spring have taken the field in full force. Spectators can expect higher energy games and a team that is as close as family.

Head coach Sean Daem, the only returning coach from last season, will be assisted by Kiera Pattison, Chad Nelson, and Ashley Barkman, a 2016 graduate and former outfielder.

Daem has put a lot of thinking into the new season about improvements to keep the success level higher than it’s been in the past, and with a group of mostly returning varsity experienced players, he believes the team can do just that.

The team hopes to come out full force at the plate with multiple returing homerun hitters including sophomore Skye Ingram and junior Makayla Murphy.

“A lot of thinking of how to prevent that one bad inning that we always seemed to have last year,” said Daem of preparations for the season.

Improvements have been made to the facility in anticipation of the divisional tournament the weekend of May 19 that will be held on our home field. Larger more accommodating and visually pleasing dugouts, built by fathers of past, present and future PHS players and painted by team members, and 150 tons of fresh dirt have been implemented at the fields and a shiny new flagpole, generously provided by the Booster Club, Livingston Baseball and Softball Association, and the City of Livingston.

Returning junior and prospective varsity pitcher Paige Gavne looks forward to wiping out the competition stating, “If we, this team, this family, try hard and work hard in practice every day we will be successful.”

The girls take the field for their first game in Columbus April 1 and will host the first home game against Fergus on Friday 21. Divisionals will also be held in Livingston May 19 and 20.

Braves baseball looks to start season off with a bang SAVANNAH ENGLAND Geyser Staff Writer The Livingston Braves varsity baseball squad is practicing hard as they enter the final weeks before their first game on April 22. By practicing three days a week for two hours it helps the boys become closer to their goal as a team.

Last year, the Braves won divisionals by beating Dillon in the semi-finals. After winning the semi-finals, the Braves continued to the championship and beat the Belgrade Bandits 14-8.

“After playing around 60 games last season our team accomplished our goal which was making it to state,” says second baseman and Park High Junior Brock Peterson.

Their momentum rolled into state by winning their first game, but fell short by losing the next two games, ending their shot at a state title. The Braves plan on continuing their winning culture this season as many players will return from last year. Zander Petrich and Buck Spallone, two all-state players, will return to play for the Braves this season.

There’s nothing like an “adrenaline rush when a kid takes off to try and steal second! I love throwing kids out” says allstate and Park High junior Zander Petrich.

1995 wrestling Hall of Famer Larry Quisel: pin it to win it work he earned his way into the collegiate wrestling elite. In the 1999 NCAA wrestling championships Quisel earned the Gorrarian Award, the most falls in the least amount of time, on his way to a third-place finish.

In this same tournament Quisel became the first ever wrestler to win eight consecutive matches in the NCAA championships. In his senior season, he was the runner-up at the 2000 NCAA wrestling championships where he defeated the number-one ranked wrestler in the country at 157lbs in T.J. Williams.

Quisel earned a Bachelor's degree in Applied Sciences (B.A.Sc.), Civil Engineering. He was the project manager at Engineered Structures Inc. from late 1999 to 2011. From 2012 to 2015 he was the senior project manager at Andersen Construction.

After that, Quisel said he felt like he needed a new challenge so he bought his own company and is now self-employed.

Quisel strongly believes that both in life and wrestling “you have to be able to teach yourself how to adapt and learn. You must learn to answer your own questions.”

He currently lives in Boise, Idaho with his wife, a fellow Park High grad, and three children: Jaelyn,15, Camden, 12, and Callahan, nine. He still occasionally workouts with the BSU wrestling team.

Four-time Montana all-state wrestler with two of those years as a State Champion in the 135 lb weight class. Two-time Division I all-American wrestler at Boise State University at 157 lbs. Larry Quisel is not your typical Park High alumni.

In a recent countdown of the all-time best wrestlers in Montana history by Montanasports.com, Larry Quisel was ranked as the ninth best wrestler in Montana history.

Quisel, class of 1995, was very successful in prep athletics and collegiate athletics but he said in a recent email interview that he really had no goals when leaving PHS. “I went to Boise State blind,” he said.

As he explained, “the experience was a bit overwhelming at first, [because] everyone in that wrestling room is a great wrestler.”

He recalled that the workouts were very intense and sometimes he could barely walk up stairs. He openly admitted that he struggled in the beginning but after the first few months “a switch flipped” and he knew he could compete, he just had to work his way up.

Quisel worked his way up the roster by becoming a better wrestler than this guy, the next and so forth, and after all of this

As we start into March Madness for college basketball, Livingston Youth Basketball has ended for the season.

During the youth basketball season, high schoolers have the chance to complete the 40 service hours needed to graduate and can fill their lives with basketball related activities. They keep score and stats, referee, and man the score board.

The youth basketball season also gives the youth of Livingston the chance to compete and develop a love for sports.

Park High sophomore, Matthew Netley, volunteered as a referee during the basketball season. At Park, he plays basketball for the high school team. He has been playing basketball in Livingston since he was a third grader. Now as a sophomore, eight years later, he is volunteering as a referee for the same league he played for as a kid.

He volunteered for up to six games on one day and had a good time doing so. He said that, “I did half of my hours for service and the other half as a job”.

He kept company with other volunteers during time-outs and in between quarters.

The games happened on Saturdays from 8a.m. to 7p.m. He has been volunteering for the youth basketball season at the civic center for two years. He says he volunteers because, “I like basketball and getting paid to help out makes it even better”.

Brothers Eli and Calvin Calpis have been playing basketball in Livingston for 5 years and have loved every minute of it. Eli, 4th grader at Saint Mary’s Catholic School, says that his favorite part of basketball is “cheering on my team and cheering on those who don’t score much. When they score and are happy, it makes me happy”. He told me that “he loves basketball and everything about it”.

Calvin, 6th grader at Sleeping Giant Middle School, says “I tried to play basketball whenever I could, after school or at lunch, but now that it’s over, it’s Baseball season!” He and Eli along with their friend Grace are always outside playing sports in the parks and playgrounds around town. The Livingston Parks and Recreation department is to thank for the opportunity to have youth in Livingston to play sports and stay active.

The 1980’s High Flyin’ Ferch Boys

March 3 to discuss his recent novel, “American Copper,” with English teacher Natalie Storey’s class. During his visit, he also met with the current boys basketball team to share his experiences in the sport and inspire the team.

The Rangers faced Deer Lodge in the ‘83 state championship game, which Shann called an “incredible overall game” with roughly three dunks, 20 rebounds, and 45 points by Kral, ending in a 104-64 victory.

Two records set during that game still stand today: the most points ever scored in a Montana state championship game, and also the largest margin of victory in a state championship game. .Like Kral, it also took Shann until his senior year to get another state title.

Shann’s junior season and senior season still rank among the record books. He ranks 10th on Montana's all-time scoring average list for a season (1983-1984) with 28.3 points a game. He maintained that average his senior year, and is tied for the 8th spot in rankings as well with 28.7 points per game.

After sweeping through their league and winning that title, the divisional tournament saw solid playing from Shann, fellow guard and pure shooter Randy Petrich, Mike Kokot, and other key contributors.

The Rangers swept through the divisional tournament and defeated the Glendive Red Devils in the title game.

When you hear of the 1980’s, you probably think about bell bottoms, fast cars, and mullets. But if you lived in Livingston in the 80’s, you probably think of high flying, up and down, Runnin’ Ranger basketball.

Even 30 years later, two names represent the best of this era: Kral and Shann Ferch.

In this throwback story, you'll be taken through the 1983 and 1985 Park High boys basketball seasons, as well as the Ferch boys’ journeys after they graduated from Park High.

In 1983, senior Kral Ferch was hungrier than ever. When he and the Rangers lost the 1982 State championship to Glendive 5951, most people knew that wasn't happening again as long as either of the Ferch boys were running the court in a Ranger uniform. Kral was an athletic 6-3 forward who loved to assault the hoop whether there were bodies there or not. With a 45-inch vertical his senior year, contesting or blocking a dunk attempt from Kral was rare. His younger brother Shann, on the other hand, was a 6-2 guard who was as smooth as can be. From sharp handles to pure shooting, Shann could do it all.

granddaddy of them all, the Class A state tournament. After battling through games with Miles City and Hamilton at the Worthington Arena in Bozeman, the Rangers found themselves in the title game against Butte Central.

In front of a packed house of 6,500+ fans, the Rangers and the Maroons put on a double overtime show that Shann said sports broadcasters and many still consider one of the best games in Montana high school history.

With the game going into two extra periods, players had to step up and fill some big shoes. A pair of free throws with two seconds left propelled Park High and they won 99-97. For the 6,500 fans, they witnessed not only a great game, but a great duel between two star players. The Rangers could not stop Tom Kenney from Butte Central, as he finished with 44 points. But Butte Central could not stop Shann either, as he ended up finishing with 39 points.

The Ferch boys weren't done there. After moving on to Montana State after graduating Park High in 1983, Kral Ferch shined in his first two years and was joined by Shann in Bozeman in 1985. The two brought their fast, high flying play to the Bobcats, and it often drew a packed house to Worthington Arena.

With Kral graduating from MSU, Shann still had two years left of eligibility, but he took his talents to California to play for the Pepperdine Waves, earning there a master’s degree in psychology. But once again, the road didn't end there for Shann, as he went overseas to play pro ball in Germany.

Kral had also kept his athletic career going, but not with a basketball in hand. He pursued a future in volleyball; his wife was a big time volleyball player, so he got into it, too.

After it was all said and done, Kral earned a degree in computer science from Montana State and has worked for big companies such as Texas Instruments and Microsoft, with whom Shann said his brother built a career.

When Shann decided to hang up the shoes and call it a wrap for basketball, he went back to school, earning a master’s in psychology from Pepperdine, a PHD in psychology from Alberta College, and also a masters in poetry from Eastern Washington University. Shann has settled in Spokane, Washington and he is professor of Leadership and Forgiveness Studies at Gonzaga University, as well as an author himself.

In a recent visit to his former school, Shann took the time to talk to the current Park High basketball team about team values, commitment, and dedication. Head coach Layne Glaus loved Shann’s perspective on the values that could be taken from basketball and applied to life. Glaus also said, “Shann went into detail about the amount of time and effort that he dedicated to becoming the best. Hearing that from a guy like Shann is a great motivator for our team going into the off season. Shann often got 8-10 hours a day playing basketball in the offseason, and (as he stated in the talk with the team,) if the whole team gets 2-3 hours a day in the offseason and learn to play together, you will be almost unbeatable when the season comes.”
