"The highest duty of an individual is to contribute all in his [or her] power to the best good of all." — Colonel Francis W. Parker The Parker experience brings together students with the highest zeal for learning, dedicated educational professionals with exceptional capabilities, and an inclusive and interdependent community where each child can thrive socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. Your support makes the Parker experience possible for every student and accessible to children in our San Diego community. We know that every fiscal year we have to earn your loyalty, deliver on your investment, and most important, stay true to our mission and purpose— teaching and learning. It is an extraordinary privilege and responsibility. You can rest assured that we are devoted to doing this and cannot do it without you. We will never lose sight of this. We extend our deepest gratitude to you, our donors, for your partnership in this important work.

YOUR SUPPORT

about the report Francis Parker School is supported by families who understand that their giving ensures Parker is able to provide each student with the best education possible. Every gift enhances the breadth, depth, and scope of the Parker educational program and each student’s individual academic journey. Because tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Parker education, we ask every Parker community member to support our School by making a gift they are proud of. Every year, we seek to upgrade the report to capture the remarkable people and their contributions to the School. This year we included families who named seats in J. Crivello Hall in the Funds & Spaces section and listed Athletic Hall of Fame awardees, Arts Hall of Fame awardees, and Gala Chairs in the Leaders & Awards section. We are honored to introduce the new Head of School Scholarship Program and its generous founders and donors, and we continue to recognize our Campaign for Parker and Heart of Campus investors in the Leadership Giving section. Donors recognized in the Annual Giving section made gifts between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018, in support of Parker’s endowment and current-use operating needs. Individuals who have participated in annual giving for four to nine consecutive fiscal years are noted with a symbol (¸) and donors who have participated in annual giving for 10 or more consecutive fiscal years are bolded. Throughout the report, deceased donors are noted with an asterisk (*), the Anonymous name listing may recognize multiple people, and the graphed data values are rounded. The cover, designed for this report, celebrates the School's two Campuses, special traditions, and rich history in San Diego. Your continued commitment to Parker makes this image come to life. Finally, we have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. If you have questions about your donor recognition or would like more information about giving opportunities, please contact Shara Freeman Hoefel, Head of Advancement, at 858 / 569-7900. UNIQUE GIFTS Unique gifts are defined as significant donations in support of targeted initiatives. Each year, Parker is extremely fortunate to work with donors and foundations that make specific current-use gifts. The School is able to solicit grants due to the high giving participation of our Parker community: Your generosity inspires granting organizations to join us. In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, Parker received generous unique gifts totaling more than $900,000. ADMISSIONS OUTREACH

MATH IN FOCUS

STUDENT GROUPS

For the second year, Parker collaborated with the Mason Hirst Foundation to reduce barriers for families who wish their children to attend Parker. The Foundation's investment helped the School to achieve two primary objectives: increasing Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten applications from families in underserved communities and eliminating cost barriers associated with the application process. These goals are in line with the strategic plan.

Peter Black and Haleh Partow, in concert with matching gifts from Qualcomm, supported "Math in Focus" training sessions for Lower and Middle School math teachers. The training aided faculty in preparing students for the Grade 5 to Grade 6 math transition and helped them understand how to best guide students toward deeper conceptual understanding, comprehension, and cognitive growth through the use of a differentiated instructional model. The goal of this continued professional development is to ensure that students have gained the understanding and skills to perform high-level computation with confidence.

Women of W.A.R. Lords (W.O.W.), a subset of the Parker Robotics Team, aspires to empower women to take risks and stay engaged on FIRST Robotics, STEM, and beyond. W.O.W. applied for and received a grant from Qualcomm to proactively attract and retain female students to the Robotics Team. The grant was used to advance digital communication channels, sponsor a monthly lunch series, and afford opportunities for students to attend conferences and events.

DRAMA PRODUCTIONS The Rice Family Foundation awarded a grant to Parker to enhance the vibrant performing arts program in the Middle and Upper Schools. The grant supported the 2017-2018 drama productions by providing resources for lighting, set and costume design, and orchestra pit music.

JAZZ WORKSHOPS Jeff ’75 and Karen Silberman have been advocates of the Summer Jazz Workshop since it launched in December 2010. Their unwavering dedication continued this past summer. Because of their support, Parker was able to offer more than 20 scholarships to middle and high school students from historically underserved communities and schools to attend this special program.

MISSION HILLS AND LINDA VISTA CAMPUS LIBRARIES The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation invested significantly to enhance the Lower School Library collection and update the Linda Vista Campus Library student work and research space. The long-standing philanthropic partnership with the Foundation has aided the School in creating new and explorative experiences for our students.

UNRESTRICTED SUPPORT Lesli and Osman Kibar generously supported key initiatives and operations of Parker's three divisions and two Campuses.

WATER BOTTLE FILLING STATIONS Patsy and David Marino supported the installation of six bottle filling stations across the Linda Vista Campus. Bottle filling stations enhance the School's sustainability and green footprint by minimizing dependency on disposable plastic bottles.

PROGRAM PARTNERSHIPS

LEADERSHIP GIVING

For the second year in a row, a Parker family has sponsored the Parker/Rady School of Management collaborative program during Parker's interim week. The Entrepreneurship and Innovation course, designed by the Rady School of Management, offered a variety of real-life educational experiences for Upper School students. Students learned marketing, research, design, communication skills, entrepreneurial strategy, and pitching from the course professor, founders of startups, and other guest speakers. The course culminated with student groups pitching new product ideas to a panel of CEOs, educators, and entrepreneurs who provided real-world expertise and candid advice.

your support Annual giving provides critical resources for Parker—a steady stream that keeps the School moving forward. Your philanthropic support makes up most of the difference between the actual cost of educating each child and what is covered by tuition; the difference is $2,450 per child. Annual gifts ensure that the Parker experience is distinctive and accessible to our students. While families have children attending Parker, we ask them to place the School among their philanthropic priorities. Prospective families and foundations look favorably upon high giving participation rates from all constituencies because this demonstrates broad-based confidence in the School and our mission. During this giving season, which runs through June 30, 2019, you will have the chance to proudly support the School through one or more of three primary giving opportunities: annual giving for the endowment, which is gratefully received throughout the fiscal year, and the Parents Association’s Day of Giving (Nov. 27, 2018) and Gala (May 11, 2019). You can take advantage of current tax-year benefits by making a contribution by Dec. 31, 2018. Unlike tuition, gifts to support Parker are fully tax-deductible.
