Mission Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation strives to provide, with compassion and dedication, superior quality health care and rehabilitation for adults. Through continual improvement of Parker’s programs and services, we will be a leader in health care delivery and education.

Fighting COVID-19 on the Front Lines The year 2020 was particularly challenging for everyone, especially within the health care community. At Parker Jewish Institute, our front-line workers stood strong, demonstrating their resiliency each and every day, even as COVID-19 struck the New York region. Our doctors, nurses and nursing assistants, along with our entire support staff, are our health care heroes. They remained committed to fulfilling Parker’s mission, by providing high quality, personalized and compassionate care to all of our patients and residents. Lifting Parker’s health care heroes up were our community supporters whose contributions will be long-remembered. These supporters contributed when and where it mattered most. They provided meals so that our staff was nourished. They delivered - and some even manufactured - personal protective equipment so that our staff was safeguarded from coronavirus. They donated funds so that Parker can continue to serve the community. They sent letters and drawings, putting a smile on the faces of our residents and employees. The first responders among them took part in a sound-off, paying tribute to James Tully, the first Parker patient to be released after fighting COVID, as well as to our tireless front-line employees. Since the public release of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, Parker immediately began distributing it to patients, residents and staff members. Parker will continue administering the vaccine, in our ongoing efforts to protect our patients, residents, staff, and community.

2020 Highlights In April, due

to the overwhelming outpouring of community support through food donations, Parker created its Meal Train program to ensure that all community food donations are efficiently distributed to staff who need it. These donations are very much appreciated by the nurses, doctors, and entire staff, who are working on the front-line of defense amidst the COVID-19 situation. From April to the end of December, there have been approximately 4,682 meals donated to our Parker team.

In March, t o keep families informed through the COVID-19 crisis, Parker established a Family Call Center. This enabled families to stay in touch with their loved ones, including virtual visits through online platforms such as FaceTime. Now, Family Call Center staff members remain at the ready to communicate regularly with family members, connecting them to additional information and resources as needed.

2020 Highlights In addition to the community’s support through meals, many donated essential Personal Protective Equipment. Countless charitable organizations and individuals reached out to Parker to donate face shields, gowns, KN95 Masks, sanitizers, and other needed PPE to protect staff and residents from COVID-19.

In May, Parker installed some of the most advanced COVID-19 safety measures available. This includes Parker’s nonstop testing operation, comprising an entire team that tests all staff weekly. The staff is armed with personal protective equipment to stay safe. And with Parker’s upgraded generator system, the Institute ensures that the power is always on, which is especially critical during COVID-19.

Parker also began building and installing new ultraviolet lighting into its heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) units to help fight against COVID-19. The UV-lighting system installed into the HVAC air ducts of the Institute’s 340,000-square-foot building, will kill or stop the spread of COVID-19 and a range of other dangerous bacteria and viruses, from MRSA to E. coli. Manufactured by Larson Electronics, the new UV-lighting system enhances Parker’s already robust protocol in infection control.

2020 Highlights In June, Parker Jewish Institute established the Infection Control Patrol Committee to ensure that staff throughout the facility maintain the highest standards in fighting the spread of disease and viruses.

The Infection Control Patrol Committee is made up of interdisciplinary volunteers from Parker’s Infection Prevention Committee. The unit adheres to the strictest infection-prevention standards set forth by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State Department of Health. The standards are fostered by staff commitment, collaboration and teamwork.

Patrol members make the rounds throughout Parker care areas, ensuring that staff are complying with the institute’s rigorous standards. This includes ensuring that all housekeeping, hygiene and infection control measures are properly carried out and responding to questions from residents and staff.

These moments also provide opportunity for feedback, commending staff for good practices, as well as mentoring and educating employees along the way. This approach fosters growth and team-building, with Patrol members available for questions and guidance. Patrol members welcome suggestions from staff, bringing ideas back to the Infection Prevention Committee for consideration.

2020 Highlights In August, Parker held its annual Ice Cream Social. By providing individually packaged ice cream and obeying social distance practices, Parker staff were able to enjoy a sweet snack break. We are grateful to our generous Past Chairman of the Board, Jerry Landsberg, and his wife, Gloria Landsberg, for making this event possible each year.

In October, Parker added digital turnstiles to its entrance, automatically scanning staff IDs and measuring temperatures, enabling the Institute to maintain physical and health security via contactless technology for the skilled nursing facility’s residents and staff.

2020 Highlights On October 20, 2020 Parker held a virtual Gala. Hosted by WCBS 880 reporter, Marla Diamond, the virtual Gala honored our health care heroes. The event was an enormous success, and we were proud to honor our selfless heroes who have stepped up in unimaginable ways. It was a night to acknowledge their hard work in comforting families from afar, soothing patients through unprecedented circumstances, and taking time away from their own families for the greater good.

2020 Highlights On December 21, 2020, Parker received and administered Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for patients, residents and staff. Parker is partnering with Walgreens, one of the approved pharmacies, to administer the vaccine. This process requires two doses that are provided a minimum of 21 days apart. Parker is confident that the vaccine, with its 95 percent efficacy rate, will mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety and well-being of our patients, residents, and staff. With the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine, there is a new ray of hope that our patients and residents may finally reunite safely with their families in person.
