A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The Armory strives to provide its audiences with the opportunity to experience masterful and thought-provoking works that are in dialogue with the sweep of the Armory’s unique spaces. And there is no better setting than the Board of Officers Room, with its pristine acoustics and austere elegance, to offer audiences the chance to enjoy the intimacy of recitals and music-making. Now in its fourth year, the recital series showcases more maverick musicians than ever before with an even greater breadth of works spanning more than six centuries. Building on our commitment to the art form that unites song and poetry, we feature the dynamic soprano Lisette Oropesa for an artfully-curated series of Spanish, German, and French art songs and the expressive countertenor Andreas Scholl, who performs a program of English Renaissance and Baroque gems. We take the art form in exciting new directions with the Grammy Award-winning Roomful of Teeth in a performance exploring vocal music of the 21st century, a recital by the JACK Quartet performing the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Roger Reynold’s FLiGHT, and an interpretation of Nina Simone’s iconic voice through the cello of the intriguing Sonia Wieder-Atherton. We also welcome burnished baritone Roderick Williams as well as Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinettist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, for their thrilling North American recital debuts. Together with a program of Beethoven’s wondrous violin sonatas by Kristof Baráti, a poignant and heartfelt evening of lieder and art song performed by lyric soprano Kate Royal, and our ongoing partnership with the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program that spotlights the next generation of opera greats, this year’s lineup allows even more opportunities than ever before to witness major talent in the most personal of settings. ABOUT THE PROGRAM It’s impossible to truly recreate the milieu in which the first listeners to tonight’s songs encountered them. At the most obvious level, the songs were new. Writing in the 1840’s and 1850’s Schumann was still very early in the development of the German Lied. The songs were frequently presented in salons like the one we are in now. Even the minority of songs which made it onto concert stages were heard in small halls, well suited to the clear delivery of text. Programming was less uniform than is the case today. Songs were often mixed in with chamber works, works for solo piano, duets, and larger ensembles arias and readings. Robert Schumann began his musical career as a pianist. After writing a number of notable piano works, he turned his attention to song-writing. The year of his marriage to the 18year old Clara Wieck, 1840, was his first burst of songwriting creativity, producing many of his most popular songs. In addition to solo songs, we will hear vocal duets and four-hand compositions, all drawn from the deep well of imagination that informs all of Schumann’s remarkable, original music. The second half of tonight’s program features French music from the Romantic period. Much of the vocal music of these composers was written first heard in private performances, often by amateur singers with the composers at the piano. The songs and duets we’re presenting share a lyricism, delicacy, and intimate scale quite different from the powerful effects these composers could summon on the opera stage. But the talent to create a character in a few swift strokes is not so different on the opera stage and the recital platform. Bizet brings Carmen to life in the first few bars of her entrance music. Similarly, the sultry heroine of “Les adieux de l’hôtesse Arabe” leaps off the page, creating an intense music drama in a few minutes time. This is the second season of collaboration between the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Program and the Park Avenue Armory. We are delighted to perform in this beautiful space, so well suited to this captivating repertoire. ABOUT THE ARTISTS Mezzo-Soprano Rihab Chaieb, who was born in Tunisia and grew up in Montreal, is in her first year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. This season, Rihab Chaieb performed Tebaldo in Verdi’s Don Carlo at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, sang with the Tucson Song Desert Festival in collaboration with the Ravinia Festival, and took part in a recital at the Met Museum in New York. Last season, she sang Waltraute in Atom Egoyan’s production of Wagner’s Die Walküre at the Canadian Opera Company. She made her official debut with Glyndebourne Festival Opera in the summer of 2015 as Mércedès in David McVicar’s production of Bizet’s Carmen. As an Ensemble member of the Canadian Opera she sang Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito, Juno/Ino in Semele, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Inez in Il Trovatore, Soeur Mathilde in Dialogues des Carmélites, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi, Tisbe in La Cenerentola, second secretary to Mao in Nixon in China, and French Mother in Death in Venice. She has also sung Dido in Dido and Aeneas with the McGill Chamber Orchestra. She is the 2014 Bernard Diamant Prize winner of the Canada Arts Council, a Grand Prize Winner of the Christina & Louis Quilico Award competition, and a prize winner of the George London Foundation Competition and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Ms. Chaieb earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and studied at Cégèp de Saint-Laurent in Montreal. She has participated in the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco, the Steans Music Institute at the Ravinia Festival, and the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien. Ms. Chaieb’s participation in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program is sponsored by the Kern Family, in memory of Ralph W. Kern. Pianist Dimitri Dover is in his second year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He served as pianist for the MET and Juilliard performances of Bellini’s La sonnambula last month, conducted by Speranza Scappucci. He has performed at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, City Center, Symphony Space, and Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, as well as Warner Theater in Washington, Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, and throughout the USA, Canada, and Austria. Recent appearances in the New York area include the 2013 4
Chelsea Music Festival, concerts of contemporary works with Cutting Edge and Composers Concordance, chamber music with North Shore Pro Musica, Lieder recitals with Schubert & Co., and numerous solo performances. Mr. Dover has performed in the composer’s presence the works of Valerie Coleman, Dan Cooper, George Crumb, Jake Heggie, Libby Larsen, the late Nicholas Maw, John Musto, Ben Moore, André Previn, Gene Pritsker, Morton Subotnick, and Chris Theofanidis, among many others. He has participated in masterclasses with many of the world’s leading solo and collaborative artists, including Elly Ameling, Julius Drake, Leon Fleisher, Richard Goode, Rudolf Jansen, Graham Johnson, Martin Katz, and Roger Vignoles. Since 2011, Mr. Dover has held a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellowship in Collaborative Piano at The Juilliard School, where he has served as teaching assistant to Jonathan Feldman, chair of Collaborative Piano, as well as staff pianist for Juilliard Vocal Arts and teaching fellow in Keyboard Skills. He was awarded full fellowships to Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Summer Music Festival, and Songfest at Colburn, where he returned as staff pianist in 2014. He has also attended the Franz-Schubert-Institut in Baden, Austria. Mr. Dover received his M.M. and Graduate Performance Diploma in Piano Performance from the Peabody Conservatory, where he was twice honored with performances at commencement and awarded multiple conservatory prizes in accompanying. He holds a B.A. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, where he performed extensively as concerto soloist, including the Schumann Piano Concerto at Sanders Theatre, as well as recitalist and chamber musician. Soprano Clarissa Lyons, from Davis, California, is in her first year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Ms. Lyons sang the role of Lisa in the MET and Juilliard production of La sonnambula, conducted by Speranza Scappucci last month. This past summer Ms. Lyons was at Caramoor as a Bel Canto Young Artist, and recently participated in Marilyn Horne’s series The Song Continues at Carnegie Hall. In 2012 she sang Second Witch and Second Woman in Dido and Aeneas with the Mark Morris Dance Group at Lincoln Center. In both 2012 and 2011 Ms. Lyons appeared at Tanglewood as a Music Center fellow, where she sang the title role in Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna, Ravel’s Trois Poèmes de Stephane Mallarmé, and appeared in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Susan

Graham. Ms. Lyons has also appeared at Opera on the Avalon in the role of Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with Martina Aroyo’s Prelude to Performance summer program as Mimi in La bohème, and sang the role of Elaine O’Neill in John Musto’s Later the Same Evening at MSM.

Ms. Muñoz has also participated in masterclasses with artists such as Richard Goode, Ken Noda, Wolfram Rieger, John Fisher, Margo Garrett, Kayo Iwama, Vera Calabria, Vitaly Margulis, Eteri Anjerperidze, and Andrzej Jasinski.
Ms. Lyons earned her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and her Masters of Music from Bard College Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music.
She received her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music from the Mannes College the New School for Music.
Pianist Giuseppe Mentuccia, from Bassano Romano, Italy, is in his first year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He served as Assistant Conductor for the MET and Juilliard performances of Bellini’s La sonnambula last month, conducted by Speranza Scappucci. He has given solo recitals and concerto performances throughout Europe and the USA including at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Alice Tully Hall, The Greene Space at WQXR, and the Valencia International Piano Festival. He has served on the faculty of both the Music Academy of the West and Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and is currently on the faculty at The Juilliard School. Mr. Mentuccia won first prize at the Juilliard Stravinsky Concerto Competition and Prize Vittoria as best graduate of Santa Cecilia Conservatory. Mr. Mentuccia received his Artist Diploma in piano performance at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and his Masters of Music at The Juilliard School. He is currently a third-year CV Starr Doctoral Fellow at Juilliard. Pianist Sophia Muñoz, from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is in her second year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Last season she served as rehearsal pianist for the MET and Juilliard production of Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide, conducted by Jane Glover. Ms. Muñoz was the rehearsal pianist and harpsichordist in Il Viaggio a Reims, and rehearsal and orchestral pianist in the New York premiere of Daniel Catán’s Il Postino, both with Mannes Opera under the baton of Joseph Colaneri. She has performed in concerts with the Mannes Festival including performances at Weill Recital Hall and Steinway Hall. Ms. Muñoz was the also the pianist and repetiteur for
Australian-Chinese tenor Kang Wang is in his first year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Mr. Wang sang the role of Elvino in the MET and Juilliard production of La sonnambula, conducted by Speranza Scappucci last month. Kang Wang was previously a member of the opera studio “OperAvenir” at Theater Basel in Switzerland in the 20142015 season, during which time he performed Nathanael in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Notar in Don Pasquale, and Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia. He performed Don José in La Tragedie de Carmen at IVAI Virginia in June 2014, and sang Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the Royal Northern College of Music. At the Queensland Conservatorium he sang Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress. Mr. Wang won the People’s Choice Award in the Dame Joan Sutherland National Vocal Award, and as one of five finalists, performed in the final concert of the Australian Singing Competition at the Sydney Opera House. He won the Clonter Opera Prize in the UK in 2014 and was a semi-finalist of the 2011 Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna. Kang Wang gained his International Artist Diploma in Opera at Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, and completed his Master of Music Studies in opera at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in Australia under Mr. Joseph Ward OBE.

ABOUT THE ARMORY Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to consume epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. In its first eight years, the Armory opened its doors to visionary artists, directors, and impresarios who provided extraordinary experiences in a range of art forms. Such was its impact that in December 2011, The New York Times noted, “Park Avenue Armory… has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.” Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $200-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron.

The revered New York Philharmonic returns to the Armory for the New York premiere of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's Circle Map, a new work for orchestra and electronics that builds out from six stanzas by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, and D'om la Vrai Sens. The evening also includes the U.S. premiere of Lumiére et Pesanteur as well as Lonh, a work that combines medieval love poetry sung by rising soprano Jennifer Zetlan with an electronic score that manipulates sounds from nature to evoke a distant, luminous landscape.

The Armory’s period rooms provide a unique backdrop for their workshops, serving as both inspiration and as a collaborator in the development of their work. Salon culture has enlivened art since the 19th century, when friends gathered in elegant chambers to hear intimate performances and share artistic insights. Join us following select performances for libations with fellow attendees as we revive this tradition in our historic period rooms. You may also get to talk with the evening’s artists, who often greet friends and audience members following their performances.

MALKIN LECTURE SERIES
Each fall, the popular Malkin Lecture Series presents scholars and experts on topics relating to the Armory and the civic, cultural, and aesthetic life of New York City in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Lecture topics have ranged from history makers like Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt to Gilded Age society’s favorite restaurants and the Hudson River painters.

ABOUT THE BOARD OF OFFICERS ROOM “The restoration of the Park Avenue Armory seems destined to set a new standard, not so much for its scale, but for its level of respect and imagination.” – The New York Times The Board of Officers Room is one of the most important historic rooms in America and one of the few remaining interiors by Herter Brothers. After decades of progressive damage and neglect, the room completed a revitalization in 2013 by the architecture team at Herzog & de Meuron and executive architects Platt Byard Dovell White Architects to transform the space into a state-of-the- art salon for intimate performances and other contemporary art programing. The Board of Officers Room is the third period room at the Armory completed (out of 18) and represents the full range of design tools utilized by the team including the removal of accumulated layers on the surfaces, the addition of contemporary lighting to the 1897 chandeliers, new interpretations of the stencil patterns on areas of loss, the addition of metallic finishes on new materials, new programming infrastructure, and custom designed furniture.
The room’s restoration is part of an ongoing $200-million transformation, which is guided by the understanding that the Armory’s rich history and the patina of time are essential to its character. A defining component of the design process for the period rooms is the close collaboration between architect and artisan. Highly skilled craftspeople working in wood, paint, plaster, and metals were employed in the creation of the building’s original interiors and the expertise – and hand – of similar artisans has been drawn upon for the renovation work throughout.
